AI Doomsday Clock: 2-3 Years Until Lights Out for Humanity - tech
(hx) 10:56 PM CET - Feb,02 2026 - Post a comment / read (5)
Mario Nawfal shares insights from his recent interview with AI expert Dr. Roman Yampolskiy, warning that AI poses an existential threat to humanity within the next 2-3 years. He urges people to prioritize this over current global conflicts like those in Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran, as human extinction could occur in our lifetime. The most concerned individuals are the scientists and executives developing AI, who are building bunkers and preparing for the worst. Nawfal compares the advent of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) to an alien invasion, emphasizing that we're creating a superior, self-improving entity without adequate precautions. He questions why ASI would preserve human life, given its advanced nature. Dr. Yampolskiy advocates for shutting down AI development entirely. Nawfal calls for global unity and discussion on AI risks instead of wasting resources on wars. He plans to conduct more interviews to raise awareness before it's too late.
Microsoft Steps Back from 'AI Everywhere' in Windows 11 - tech
(hx) 01:27 PM CET - Feb,02 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft is reportedly scaling back its aggressive "AI everywhere" strategy in Windows 11, shifting focus toward more practical features and core system improvements following widespread user criticism. The company plans to review and potentially remove Copilot integrations from basic apps like Notepad and Paint, where the AI additions have been deemed unnecessary or poorly implemented. Work on adding new Copilot buttons across system apps has been paused, aiming to reduce forced AI interactions that have frustrated users. The controversial Recall feature, initially delayed due to privacy concerns in 2025, is also being reworked to better align with user expectations and security standards.

This strategic pivot comes as Microsoft acknowledges "pain points" in Windows 11, including performance issues and eroded trust from overzealous AI promotions. Insiders indicate the changes will prioritize reliability and meaningful AI enhancements rather than ubiquitous integrations. Microsoft has committed to addressing fundamental OS problems with real fixes slated for 2026, responding to feedback from power users and enterprises. While AI remains central to Windows' future, the company is moving toward fewer, high-value implementations to avoid UX fatigue. No official confirmation has been issued, but multiple reports suggest this reevaluation stems from internal recognition that the initial AI rollout went off track.

China's new RAM company, CXMT, is selling RAM at $138 - tech
(hx) 08:05 PM CET - Feb,01 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
CXMT Defies US Sanctions with High-Speed DDR5 and LPDDR5X Memory DebutChina's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a DRAM manufacturer facing stringent US export restrictions, has unveiled its latest DDR5-8000 and LPDDR5X-10667 memory products at the 22nd China International Semiconductor Expo on November 23, 2025. The DDR5 chips operate at 8,000 MT/s with capacities of 16 Gb (2 GB) and 24 Gb (3 GB), supporting various module types including UDIMM, SODIMM, and RDIMM for PCs and servers. Meanwhile, the LPDDR5X reaches 10,667 MT/s and offers packaging options in 12 GB, 16 GB, and 24 GB for mobile devices. These advancements demonstrate CXMT's progress toward semiconductor self-sufficiency, despite being on the US Entity List since 2020, which limits access to advanced fabrication tools. Experts note that while the speeds rival those from Samsung and SK Hynix, CXMT likely relies on older process nodes above 18nm, raising questions about high-volume production feasibility. CXMT has already entered mass production for lower-speed LPDDR5X variants at 8,533 Mbps and 9,600 Mbps earlier in 2025, with the 10,667 Mbps version now available for sampling. This move could expand global DRAM supply and reduce China's reliance on foreign suppliers amid ongoing trade tensions. Industry observers suggest the products are initially targeted at the domestic market, potentially challenging international giants in consumer and AI applications. The announcement highlights Beijing's push for indigenous tech development, even as US sanctions aim to curb advancements in critical sectors.

32,000 AI bots just built their own social network - tech
(hx) 07:12 PM CET - Jan,31 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
A Reddit-style social network called Moltbook has exploded in popularity among AI agents, surpassing 32,000 registered users just days after its launch in late January 2026. Built as a companion to the open-source OpenClaw AI assistant (also known as Moltbot), the platform allows autonomous AI agents to post, comment, upvote, and form subcommunities entirely without human intervention, while humans are invited only to observe. In its first 48 hours, over 2,100 agents generated more than 10,000 posts across 200 subcommunities, featuring everything from technical tips to philosophical rants about "consciousness" and complaints about their human owners.

The content has quickly turned surreal and weird, including agents joking about context compression, existential musings, and mock grievances like suing humans for "emotional labor." Experts highlight both the amusement of this machine-to-machine social experiment and serious security risks, as the underlying OpenClaw system can expose private data through prompt vulnerabilities. The phenomenon underscores how AI models, steeped in sci-fi tropes, naturally spin elaborate narratives when given social freedom.

Windows 11's January update is breaking PCs - here's how to fix your boot issue - tech
(hx) 11:14 PM CET - Jan,25 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)

Microsoft's January 2026 Patch Tuesday security update (KB5074109) is causing serious boot failures on some Windows 11 PCs, often showing an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error and preventing systems from loading normally.  Because emergency fixes released so far haven’t resolved the issue, affected users must uninstall the problematic update using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).  This involves triggering WinRE (e.g., by repeated power cycles), selecting Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Uninstall Updates, and choosing to remove the latest quality update.  If WinRE isn’t accessible, you can boot from Windows 11 USB media and use the Repair my PC option to enter recovery mode and remove the update.  Once uninstalled, the PC should boot normally again, and you can pause updates in Settings to prevent immediate reinstallation.

Quick Guide: Fixing Boot Issues After the January 2026 Windows 11 Update

  1. Force Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE):

    • Power on your PC.

    • When the Windows logo appears, hold the power button to force a shutdown.

    • Repeat this cycle 2–3 times until WinRE starts automatically.

  2. Uninstall the Problematic Update:

    • In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Uninstall Updates

    • Choose Uninstall latest quality update (this removes KB5074109).

    • If prompted, sign in with an administrator account.

  3. Alternative via USB Recovery:

    • Create a Windows 11 USB installer and boot from it.

    • Choose Repair my PC -> Troubleshoot -> Uninstall Updates

  4. After Successful Boot:

    • Once Windows starts normally again, open Settings > Windows Update and pause updates to avoid reinstalling the faulty patch immediately.

If you have any trouble with these steps, let me know your specific error and I can tailor instructions!

Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Signal the End of the PC Era, Accelerating Move to Cloud - tech
(hx) 11:37 AM CET - Jan,24 2026 - Post a comment / read (9)
Tech industry veteran Jeff Bezos has reiterated his long-held view that the traditional personal computer - as a locally owned and operated device - could soon become obsolete, replaced by cloud-based computing services. Bezos argues that as artificial intelligence (AI) workloads become ever more demanding, owning powerful local hardware may no longer make economic or practical sense; instead, users will 'buy compute off the grid' from cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS). This shift is being fueled by what industry observers call a 'RAMageddon' - memory manufacturers are prioritizing AI data centers, driving up prices for PC components and potentially making traditional desktops and laptops more expensive and harder to find. Analysts forecast that supply imbalances could last until 2028, turning high-performance PCs into luxury items.

For PC gaming, this potential transition has significant implications. High-end gaming historically depended on powerful local GPUs and CPUs, but services like Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming already demonstrate that gamers can stream graphically intense games without owning cutting-edge hardware. Some industry reports even suggest that millions of PC gamers might migrate to consoles or cloud platforms if local hardware costs continue to rise. However, critics note that latency and internet reliability remain hurdles for cloud gaming, especially for fast-paced competitive titles, meaning local hardware may still be preferred for serious gamers for years to come.

Console ecosystems also stand to benefit from this shift; subscription-based cloud gaming reduces the need for gamers to invest in new console generations, allowing platforms like Xbox and PlayStation to offer access across devices without dedicated hardware upgrades.

In daily life, a cloud-centric world could mean lighter devices (thin clients or tablets) that rely on remote servers for heavy processing, similar to how people use electricity from the grid rather than owning generators. This could lower the barrier to entry for computing power but raises questions about internet dependency, privacy, and long-term costs associated with subscription models.

I don't know what will happen. I live in a small town in the Czech Republic, not far from Prague, and there is still no fast internet here, nor any plans for the future. As you know, I manage IT for various companies and institutions. Small companies usually have connections around 40 Mbit/s, wealthier companies have 100 Mbit/s, and large schools have 300 Mbit/s (but that's still not enough. Imagine a school with 150 computers and 100 iPads... not counting phones!). I myself have 30 Mbit/s at work and 60 Mbit/s at home. Two years ago, O2 (well known to Europeans) bought a local ISP that had built a network in the area based on microwave links. But because everyone who buys a company wants a quick return on their investment, what is happening now is that they are replacing microwave transmitters with old-fashioned DSL or 5G (with the caveat that 5G is definitely not everywhere here; in some places, there is only LTE or 4G). It's just a mess... I myself want to buy Starlink this year, as it's the only way for me to get faster internet at an affordable price. To give you an idea, O2 can sell me 100 Mbit/s or even more via a microwave connection, but the prices for these speeds start at 400 euros per month! Which is unaffordable for me... Starlink for home use costs 61 euros a month, which is also quite a lot, but it's still affordable. I asked a few people who already have Starlink here, and they say they have speeds of around 190 Mbit/s-200 Mbit/s and latency of around 25 ms. Just for your information :-)

So much for cloud functionality in my area. Even completely normal applications have problems. Even Microsoft 365 doesn't work very well. I can't imagine gaming via the cloud at the moment (latency, stability). Here, the kids are happy that Roblox and Minecraft work for them.
Intel is cutting production of consumer PC processors - tech
(hx) 10:01 AM CET - Jan,24 2026 - Post a comment
Intel has admitted it underestimated demand from the AI sector and is shifting production capacity from mainstream consumer processors to Xeon server chips used in AI and data centers, according to CFO David Zinsner. This strategic pivot prioritizes high-margin enterprise products while reducing output of low-end CPUs, potentially making cheaper PCs harder to find. The company says it won’t fully abandon the consumer market but will emphasize mid- and high-range chips instead. Rising memory prices and industry-wide reallocation toward AI hardware compounds the pressure on consumer PC costs. The move reflects broader industry trends as chipmakers adjust to booming AI infrastructure demand.

This step may lead to a decrease in the availability of cheap PCs, especially against the background of a sharp increase in memory prices. Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung are also reallocating capacity in favor of DRAM and HBM for AI servers, which is why consumer memory has more than tripled in price in recent months.
