NVIDIA GeForce 355.60 WHQL Video Card Driver - tech
(hx) 10:39 PM CEST - Aug,13 2015 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released GeForce 355.60 WHQL drivers that are the Game Ready driver for the DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 preview edition of Ashes of the Singularity. Ashes of the Singularity is a massive-scale Real Time Strategy (RTS) game that was developed and published by Stardock. Until now, terrestrial strategy games have had to substantially limit the number of units on screen. As a result, these RTS's could be described as battles. Thanks to recent technological improvements such as multi-core processors and 64-bit computing combined with the invention of a new type of 3D engine called Nitrous, Ashes of the Singularity games can be described as a war across an entire world without abstraction. Thousands or even tens of thousands of individual actors can engage in dozens of battles simultaneously.Stardock stated on their site that the new founder version of the game supports DirectX 12, DirectX 11 and AMD's Mantle API. The new GeForce 355.60 WHQL drivers also have new SLI profiles for Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition and Next Car Game: Wreckfest.

Win10 vs. Win8.1 vs. Win7 Performance - tech
(hx) 09:10 PM CEST - Aug,10 2015 - Post a comment / read (22)
The chaps over at TechSpot have pitted Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1 vs. Windows 7 in a three-way deathmatch to decide which OS is the performance king. Here's an excerpt:
All three operating systems were tested using a fresh install with all the updates applied and then our test software installed. The exact same hardware was used for each configuration with the only difference being the OS used.

Intel Core i5-4670K (3.4GHz - 3.8GHz)
Asrock Z97 Extreme6
8GB DDR3-2400 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980
Crucial MX200 1TB
SilverStone Essential Gold 750w
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

After watching near-identical results pour in on most tests, from application to encoding, to storage and gaming, it's hard to read too much into results as there are many variables we can't control. The same hardware that currently runs Windows 7 competently can be upgraded to Windows 10 with no issues whatsoever on the performance front. We can ensure that the operating systems were evaluated using the exact same hardware, benchmarking software and methodology. However, we can't ensure that something such as GPU drivers didn't cause variations in performance. Moreover, technologies such Intel's Turbo boost feature can impact the accuracy of the results, though we generally run all tests at least three times, taking the average from multiple runs.

The short version of this conclusion is that a properly set up Windows machine equipped with semi-modern hardware should be capable of running Windows 7 or above more than adequately. The same hardware that currently runs Windows 7 competently can be upgraded to Windows 10 with no issues whatsoever on the performance front.

It used to be the case a few generations back that a new Windows release would need time to be at least on par with the performance of its predecessor. Possibly the most extreme example I can recall was the move from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Though that was partly due to immature drivers on the all-new platform, Vista was a resource hog, too.

We wouldn't be surprised if certain aspects of Windows 10's performance are improved over the coming months and into next year, but most importantly today, you can feel free to upgrade and know you won't be sacrificing performance in the process.

There are going to be future performance benefits of Windows 10 that we can't measure yet, and even once we can, we won't be able to compare the changes with previous operating systems -- DirectX 12 gaming, for example, will only be supported by Windows 10 and later.

  • Want Windows 10 to stop tracking you? Now there's an app for that - There's a lightweight, open-source app that aims to claw back your privacy. Among the options, the app -- tentatively called "Disable Windows 10 Tracking" -- disables telemetry collection, disables certain Windows services, and other tracking. The code is also available on GitHub for inspection. According to Qazi, the app started out as a Python script before being developed into its current standalone form after gaining support and traction on Reddit. Qazi's plan is to build out the app to add as many features as possible in the hope it can disable most if not all of the operating system's tracking.
  • Microsoft expands its bug bounty program, increases payouts - Microsoft has been paying bounties to researchers who find and disclose security issues for a while. Now, it's expanded the program. Firefox has already released security updates to fix it. That means you should update to Firefox 39.0.3 right now.
  • Samsung to Issue Security Fixes Monthly - Samsung today said it is introducing a new policy to distribute security patches to its mobile devices once per month. The company said the change will help protect its device owners. "With the recent security issues, we have been rethinking the approach to getting security updates to our devices in a more timely manner," explained Samsung. "Since software is constantly exploited in new ways, developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected." Samsung said it will work with its carrier partners to make sure the patches are distributed as soon as possible. Samsung recently fast-tracked a security update for its newest Galaxy smartphones to repair the Android Stagefright vulnerability. The patch is being distributed to some Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.
  • How to Install Android Apps on Windows 10 Mobile - The tools have been given to a private group of top developers who already have popular apps on Android, Microsoft is hoping they'll port their apps over to Windows 10 Mobile, but since the tools have now leaked, anyone can port anything over with just a few clicks.
  • VLC updated for Windows 10 with bug fixes and new features - VLC has updated their popular media player app for Windows 10, bringing a new UI, bug fixes and new features. Perhaps one of the most notable differences between the new app and the old one is the newly updated UI. The UI has been enhanced, along with animations to match the visual aesthetic of Windows 10. There are also under-the-hood improvements that should make the app run faster, especially on low-end devices.
  • 4K Blu-ray discs arriving in 2015 - Blu-ray Disc Association has announced that it will begin licensing the UHD 4K video format on August 24, with expected "product announcements from various companies" coming this holiday season. Though many Blu-ray disc players today bear 4K upscaling functionality, the result is but a faux impersonation of authentic 4K video, often producing jagged and significantly blurrier visuals. In addition to bolstering a sharp 3840x2160 resolution, Ultra HD Blu-ray brings a greater range of color and frame rates of up to 60 frames per second for the Peter Jackson fans out there. Granted you have both a TV and content that supports it, high dynamic range video will also be present. As expected, Ultra HD Blu-ray players will bring backwards compatibility with standard 1080p Blu-ray discs as well.
  • Microsoft Open-Sources iOS App Porting Tool - Microsoft has said its Windows Bridge for iOS application is moving to open source. Windows Bridge is the tool developers need to port iOS apps to the Windows platform. It can be used to create Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 desktops apps for now, but will support the mobile versions of these two operating systems later this year. Microsoft said it wants to rely on the open source community to put Windows Bridge through its paces and contribute code and/or bug fixes as needed. Windows Bridge for iOS is being released as a technical preview and will see a full release in the fall. Microsoft is expected to offer Windows Bridge for Android in the fall as a beta app. Microsoft hopes developers will bring their Android and iOS apps to the Windows Platform, which may help address the app gap.

It includes pre-written responses and supports dictation for longer messages. It accompanies the Outlook email app for iOS. Second, Microsoft made its Translator app available to both the Apple Watch and Android Wear. The app lets wearable owners get instant translations in 50 languages by speaking to their watch. It supports search history and caches recently-used phrases. Third, Microsoft updated its OneDrive and OneNote apps for Android Wear. OneDrive will now display a photo on the watch face alongside notifications for up-to-date files. OneNote makes it easy to dictate new notes by saying "OK Google, take a note." The app also displays the most recently viewed notes on the watch face. Outlook, Translator, OneDrive, and OneNote are all free to download from iTunes and the Google Play Store.
  • T-Mobile First to Drop Samsung Galaxy S6 Prices - T-Mobile has lowered the price points of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge a week after Samsung said it would drop the phones' prices. The Galaxy S6 now costs $580, $660, and $660 for the 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB models, respectively. Those reflect price drops of $100 to $200. The Galaxy S6 Edge has similar price cuts, and now costs $680, $760, and $760 for the 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB models, respectively. Samsung reported its second quarter earnings recently and indicated the S6 and S6 Edge were not selling as well as hoped. In response, Samsung said it "plans to firmly maintain its sale of premium smartphones by flexibly adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge." T-Mobile's competitors, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless, have yet to follow the Uncarrier's lead, but they likely will in the near future.

Don't Buy The $15 DVD Player App For Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 01:31 PM CEST - Aug,07 2015 - Post a comment / read (10)
The Windows 10 upgrade may be free, but it removes Windows Media Center from PCs with the add-on installed. Users with Windows Media Center enjoyed DVD playback without the need for third-party software before Microsoft killed it off. As a result, Windows 10 can't play DVDs out of the box, but Microsoft's $15 Windows DVD Player app puts that feature back. The good news is you can play DVDs for free on Windows, as well, thanks to Videolan's VLC and libdvdcss library. Kodi also supports DVD playback without an external module. Both of these media players have long supported local video file playback, streaming from another PC, and extensions to add on additional features all for free.

No DVD playback unless you pay? Ads in solitaire unless you pay? No blu-ray support in 2015 when even their own console has it? Seems Microsoft's definition of "free" is closer to "pay to play" than we thought :

Windows 10 updates can disable pirated games - tech
(psolord) 11:25 PM CEST - Aug,06 2015 - Post a comment / read (8)
Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 10, released on July 29 has already reached 14 million downloads in the first 24 hours. If your computer is using an older version of Windows you can still upgrade, but unfortunately the update will not be free and a fee will be charged. Windows 10 also generates a unique ID for each user of the device that is used for advertising purposes. Windows 10 will sync settings and data by default with its servers.

Microsoft's new Services Terms that went in effect on the 1st of August state the technology giant can prevent you from playing counterfeit games or use unauthorized hardware. The terms are valid for everyone using Microsoft services such as Office 365, Outlook.com, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive, Bing and MSN. Also software using a Microsoft account is covered by the terms meaning the terms also affect most Windows 10 users. Although Microsoft's latest OS can be used without a Microsoft account the majority of users will nevertheless use it with an account from the Redmond company.

The terms now explicitly state Microsoft can release updates that could have some serious consequences. In the terms the company states it might, 'download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.'

  • How To Do A Clean Install Of Windows 10  - It sure seems like doing a clean install gets more complicated with each new version of Windows.
  • Windows 10 'Service Release 1' expected to roll out next month - Unlike with earlier Windows releases, Microsoft has now switched to a new update cadence with Windows 10, promising far more frequent improvements and additions to the OS - and the first post-launch update may be just a week away. The Verge reports that the first such update is referred to internally as 'Service Release 1' (SR1), and cites unnamed 'sources familiar with Microsoft's plans' who say that it's due to arrive in early August, and could roll out as soon as next week. SR1 will be a maintenance update, focusing on adding polish and stability to the OS, so don't expect any new features. As more people continue to upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft will gather more telemetry from the OS in action, and will no doubt use that data to help inform development of future maintenance releases.
  • Download Windows 10 Here - If you want to download Windows 10 to install at a later date, Microsoft has provided a tool to create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD.
  • MS releases tool to allow you to block automatic Windows 10 updates - As I previously reported, Microsoft has made updates mandatory and automatic, thus stopping users from opting out of unwanted updates or till the update has been checked by other users. A new troubleshooting package, KB3073930, however, allows you to hide or block Windows or driver updates. An update pushed out on Saturday is reportedly causing Explorer to crash and many users are complaining about the latest Windows 10 driver updates from NVIDIA. While this package is not built into the OS, it is still a useful solution for such situations when an update or new driver contains a particularly nasty bug. The tool is aimed at Windows Insiders running Windows 10 but will also work for normal users after the official launch of the OS on July 29.
  • Windows 10 Shares Your Wi-Fi With Contacts - Windows 10 shares your Wi-Fi with your contacts? WTF.
  • LOL, crooks act fast....Windows 10 ransomewares! - The payload is CTB-Locker, a ransomware variant. Currently, Talos is detecting the ransomware being delivered to users at a high rate. Whether it is via spam messages or exploit kits, adversaries are dropping a huge amount of different variants of ransomware. The functionality is standard however, using asymmetric encryption that allows the adversaries to encrypt the user's files without having the decryption key reside on the infected system. Also, by utilizing Tor and Bitcoin they are able to remain anonymous and quickly profit from their malware campaigns with minimal risk. CTB-Locker has some interesting features that are different from large scale variants Talos has seen. First is the type of encryption used, most variants use RSA asymmetric encryption. CTB-Locker actually makes use of elliptical curve encryption which still provides the same public/private key encryption but it's a different type of algorithm, with lower overhead and the same level of security utilizing smaller key space. Second, there is the issue of the time window. CTB-Locker is only giving users 96 hours to pay for decryption, which is a shorter window than is standard for most ransomware.
  • Mozilla cries foul on changes to Windows 10 - In a recent blog post and open letter by Mozilla to its CEO, Satya Nadella, Microsoft has come under fire for the changes made to default settings in Windows 10, with Mozilla CEO Chris Beard going as far as to say that "user choice has now been all but removed [in Windows 10]".
  • Facebook Improves Security Tools - Facebook today made a new tool called Security Checkup available to users online. The tool provides Facebook account holders with a broad array of controls over access to their account. For example, Security Checkup lets people log out of Facebook on old devices, set login alerts, and check password strength. Facebook hopes all users will take advantage of Security Checkup to assert more control over their login security. The feature is available globally online beginning today, and will reach mobile devices soon.
  • Most Android phones can be hacked with a simple MMS - The vast majority of Android phones can be hacked by sending them a specially crafted multimedia message (MMS), a security researcher has found. The scary exploit, which only requires knowing the victim's phone number, was developed by Joshua Drake, vice president of platform research and exploitation at mobile security firm Zimperium. Drake found multiple vulnerabilities in a core Android component called Stagefright that's used to process, play and record multimedia files. Some of the flaws allow for remote code execution and can be triggered when receiving an MMS message, downloading a specially crafted video file through the browser or opening a Web page with embedded multimedia content
  • Vulnerability That Renders Android Devices Silent Discovered - This vulnerability is present from Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) up to the current version, Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop). Combined, these versions account for more than half of Android devices in use today. No patch has been issued in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code by the Android Engineering Team to fix this vulnerability since we reported it in late May. This vulnerability can be exploited in two ways: either via a malicious app installed on the device, or through a specially-crafted web site. The first technique can cause long-term effects to the device: an app with an embedded MKV file that registers itself to auto-start whenever the device boots would case the OS to crash every time it is turned on. In some ways, this vulnerability is similar to the recently discovered Stagefright vulnerability.

  • Samsung to Adjust Price of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge - Samsung reported its second quarter earnings today and signaled some changes in its handset strategy. Despite the release of its flagship handsets during the quarter, Samsung's mobile phone business saw a 38% decline in profits when compared to the year-ago quarter. The company admitted that it misjudged supply for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets. It made too many of the flat-screened S6 and not enough of the curved S6 Edge. The phones did not sell as well as Samsung hoped. In response, Samsung it "plans to firmly maintain its sale of premium smartphones by flexibly adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and launching a new model with a larger screen."
  • Moto G to Come In CDMA and GSM Variants - Motorola has revealed there will be at least two variants of the Moto G handset for the U.S. market. The first model, XT1540, is the GSM model that includes EDGE, HSPA+, and LTE. This model is compatible with the networks run by AT&T and T-Mobile. The second model, XT1548, is the CDMA model, though it also supports GSM, EDGE, HSPA+, and LTE for world roaming. Motorola specifically said the Moto G will be offered by Sprint Prepaid, U.S. Cellular, and Virgin Mobile. None of these carriers has yet voiced support publicly for the Moto G. The Moto G, now in its third generation, has a 5-inch 720p screen, Snapdragon 410 processor, 13-megapixel camera, and support for memory cards. It costs $179 and is available directly from Motorola.com.

Gamers Should Be Worried About Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 10:31 AM CEST - Jul,27 2015 - Post a comment / read (7)
Windows 10 is just around the corner. Microsoft's newest operating system rolls out to the masses in just a few days, on July 29th. Many early reviews of the operating system have been positive. Better still, it's rolling out as a free update for Windows users. But there are already causes for concern. Chief among these is the way Microsoft has incorporated Windows 10 automatic updates and how these updates are conflicting with third party drivers. As Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly reports, the problem revolves around a conflict between automatic updates and Nvidia graphics card updates using Nvidia's "Nvidia GeForce Experience"-a handy tool for all Nvidia GPU owners. Basically Microsoft has taken control away from users, and made all updates mandatory—including driver updates. This is a decision meant to increase security and stability across the PC user base, but it comes at a cost. Users are reporting problems with multi-monitor setups, dual-card configurations (SLI) and PCs not booting properly, setting off Windows 10 emergency recovery mode. More issues are likely to arise. In other words, for a lot of PC users—and for Nvidia-GPU toting gamers in particular—Windows 10 could be problematic, especially at launch. Gamers are especially at risk given the much higher likelihood of that demographic running Nvidia graphics cards, as well as dual-GPU and dual-monitor setups.

  • Intel Skylake slides leaked - Intel Skylake slides show 10-20% CPU performance boost, faster iGPUs and new features The Intel Skylake processors are going to be unveiled on 5th August at Gamescom, which is just a few weeks away. We have come here to see several leaks on Skylake, regarding the variants, the SKUs, the platform and even seen some benchmarks already in which the Core i7-6700K is being compared to the Core i7-4790K
  • Nvidia Pascal GPU has 17 billion transistors - Pascal is the successor to the Maxwell Titan X GM200 and we have been tipped off by some reliable sources that it will have  more than a double the number of transisters. The huge increase comes from  Pascal's 16 nm FinFET process and its transistor size is close to two times smaller.
  • Acer XB280HK 28-inch G-Sync Ultra HD Gaming Monitor Review - Acer did something very smart in designing its XB280HK. By optimizing a value-priced TN panel for performance and adding G-Sync, it created a product truly worthy of a high-end gaming system. You won’t get an extras like motion blur-reduction, 144Hz refresh rates or special picture modes. What you do get for around 800 dollars is the best possible Ultra HD gaming experience available right now.
  • Best CPU Cooling - Large coolers generally require a wide full tower case, though a few mini-ITX gaming cubes are designed extra tall to compensate. Mid-sized coolers fit most mid-sized cases and motherboards, albeit with reduced performance of smaller fans and sinks. Slim coolers are under three inches tall and are generally designed for low-profile cases. Due to various socket positions of different motherboards, it's important to compare the actual specifications of each cooler to the motherboard as well as the case.

  • Bug that reduces battery life in Windows 10 - As Microsoft is getting closer to the finish line, the company is becoming increasingly vigilant about squashing any and all bugs they can find. To that end, the company has already released numerous hotfixes and security patches since last Thursday, when build 10240 hit RTM. A bug that is currently affecting the battery life of some laptops running Windows 10 is being worked on by Intel and Microsoft. Intel confirmed the existence of the problem.
  • 10 Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 10: SECURITY - As part of its '10 reasons to upgrade' series, Microsoft's latest ad is all about convincing you that Windows 10 is Microsoft's most secure OS to date. The video also goes over SmartScreen, Microsoft's built-in solution to protect users from accessing harmful sites, mirroring the function of browser extensions used by antivirus software. Last of all is the star feature, Windows Hello. It's Microsoft's attempt to create an authentication platform for the future, with support for fingerprint, facial and even iris scanning, allowing authentication to not only be far more accurate than a password but also less cumbersome. This is certainly a useful feature and it looks like multiple devices are soon going to support it.
  • Microsoft Issues Emergency Fix For Windows - This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted document or visits an untrusted webpage that contains embedded OpenType fonts. This security update is rated Critical for all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. For more information, see the Affected Software section.
  • Microsoft lowers app installs from 81 to 10 with Windows 10 - Back in 2013, Microsoft announced that if you are using a Windows 8/8.1 app, it could be installed on up to 81 devices using the same account. But, that is about to change when Windows 10 launches next week and will reduce the amount of times you can install an app with the same account by a significant margin - they are now being limited to 10 installs under the same Microsoft account.
  • Microsoft's 'Send' App is More Messaging than Email - Microsoft has released a new email application called Send. The idea behind Send, developed by Microsoft Garage, is to let people send quick messages to one another while still harnessing the power of corporate email. Send messages strip out headers, subjects and footers, and look and feel more like text messages. Even so, they are backed by companies' Office 365 email servers and can be viewed and/or responded to via Outlook.
  • uTorrent is being blocked by Google Chrome and anti-virus vendors -  TorrentFreak reports that uTorrent is currently being identified as a security risk by at least six anti-virus software vendors, including Symantec and ESET. Scans identify uTorrent.exe as being associated with Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT, and also red-flag the OpenCandy bundling software as being 'riskware'. There are no indications that the uTorrent application itself is malicious - instead, it seems that the 'harmful software warnings' are being triggered by the third-party software bundled with the app. But on top of this, uTorrent has further problems to deal with, as Google is now blocking it as well. The search giant is blocking various pages linking to uTorrent and other software from its developers, flagging multiple pages which it says "resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent."
  • Microsoft Reports A $2.1B Q4 Loss - Microsoft Corp. has announced that revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 were $22.2 billion. Gross margin, operating loss, and loss per share for the quarter were $14.7 billion, $(2.1) billion, and $(0.40) per share, respectively. These results include the impact of a $7.5 billion non-cash impairment charge related to assets associated with the acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services (NDS) business, in addition to a restructuring charge of $780 million. There was also a charge of $160 million related to the previously announced integration and restructuring plan. Combined, these items totaled $8.4 billion or a $1.02 per share negative impact. Excluding this impact, operating income and EPS would have been $6.4 billion and $0.62, respectively. During the quarter, Microsoft returned $6.7 billion to shareholders in the form of share repurchases and dividends.
  • Google+ Photos to Go Dark August 1 - Google has announced plans to shutter the Google+ Photos app and online service on August 1. Google+ Photos was a part of Google+, the search company's social network. Google+ Photos is being replaced by Google Photos, which Google launched earlier this year. Google said all Google+ Photos users' images and videos will be preserved, even if users don't port them to the new Google Photos service. Google Photos includes more features than Google+ Photos did, and offers unlimited storage for image libraries. People who've already updated to the newer Google Photos app and service don't need to take any action. Google Photos is free to download from the Play Store and iTunes App Store for Android and iOS devices, respectively.
  • YouTube on Android will now play 'vertical' videos in full screen - We have all seen it at one time or another - vertical videos shot on a mobile that look atrocious. While many will still continue to commit the appalling act of filming in portrait mode, Google has updated its YouTube app, version 10.28 for Android, to accommodate such videos by playing vertical videos in full screen. Although the app has yet to be updated via the Google Play Store, you can download the updated version from APKMirror. While this won't solve the issue of people shooting videos in portrait, Google has in the past attempted to fix this issue by placing a kind prompt to rotate the orientation of the device for proper shooting in their Android camera app. There is no official word on when this update will hit the Google Play Store.
  • BlackBerry All But Gives Up On Smartphones - BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen said the company plans to reduce the number of handsets it makes each year to one or two. Chen said the company will make a couple of flagship-class devices and ignore the low-end of the market.
  • ZTE Max+ for Boost Bumps Up Specs - Boost Mobile today listed the new ZTE Max+ for sale on its web site. The spec bump improves the memory, processor, and battery compared to original Max. The internal storage memory has been boosted from 8 GB to 16, and the RAM has also been doubled, from 1 GB to 2. The processor has been updated to the newer Snapdragon 410. The embedded battery receives a modest boost from the already-large 3,200 mAh up to 3,400 mAh. The design is also updated, featuring a rounded gold back. Other specs are similar, including the huge 5.7-inch 720p display, 8-megapixel main camera, 1-megapixel front camera, and memory card slot. The Max+ runs Android 5.1 and supports HD Voice. Like the original Max, the Max+ supports 4G LTE, but only in the primary band of the Sprint network, not the two other bands necessary for the faster Sprint Spark service. The Max+ is selling for $199, which is $100 less than the original Max at its debut.
  • T-Mobile Fined $17.5 Million Over 911 Outage - T-Mobile has settled with the FCC regarding two separate 911 outages on its national wireless network that prevented customers from reaching emergency services for a period of three hours. T-Mobile agreed to pay the FCC $17.5 million in fines and take steps to improve the strength of its network and 911 services. The company will follow an action plan to prevent or minimize the impact of similar outages in the future. For example, it will identify risks that could result in disruptions to 911 service, protect against such risks, respond with remedial actions, and recover from such outages swiftly. "The Commission has no higher priority than ensuring the reliability and resilience of our nation's communications networks so that consumers can reach public safety in their time of need," said FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. "Communications providers that do not take necessary steps to ensure that Americans can call 911 will be held to account." T-Mobile's competitors, including Verizon Wireless, have settled similar complaints with the FCC.
  • T-Mobile Launches RCS-Based Advanced Messaging - T-Mobile has announced Advanced Messaging, a refresh of its base messaging service that adds several powerful features. Advanced Messaging is based on Rich Communications Services (RCS), which allows T-Mobile to offer near real-time chatting. Users can see when people are typing responses, see exactly when messages are delivered, and see when messages are read. T-Mobile's Advanced Messaging lets people instantly share photo and video files up to 10MB, as well. Advanced Messaging will first be available on the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and S6 can enable Advanced Messaging through a simple system update. T-Mobile said more phones will launch with Advanced Messaging throughout the year, and it expects the service to become a standard feature across its product portfolio. T-Mobile Advanced Messaging is built to work across all devices, makers, platforms, and wireless operators. RCS is a standards-based technology and T-Mobile expects to introduce other RCS products in the future. Advanced Messaging will help T-Mobile compete with over-the-top messaging services, such as Facebook, Skype, and WhatsApp, that offer many of the same features

  • Microsoft promises at least 10 years of support for Win10 - Despite some confusion over statements made by Microsoft executive VP Terry Myerson at Windows 10's introduction, the new operating system does indeed have a support life cycle. The company's freshly updated life cycle schedule shows that Windows 10 will enjoy the same ten-year support period as Redmond's previous operating systems, with a minimum of five years of mainstream support and five more years of extended support. The dates don't exactly correspond with the July 29 release date, extending to October 13, 2020 for mainstream support and October 14, 2025 for extended support.
  • Office Universal Apps will require Office 365 for PCs - Earlier today Microsoft had removed the 'beta/preview' tag from its Office Universal Apps and, now the company has provided more details on the future of its touch-centric productivity suite. Starting off, Microsoft has once again repeated the fact that editing on PCs and large tablets - except when using OneNote - still requires an Office 365 subscription, while the functionality is free for smaller tablets and phones. Microsoft has also clarified how it will name the apps. The Word, Excel and Powerpoint apps for the desktop Store will be referred to as Office Mobile and have an extra 'Mobile' in their name to distinguish them from the desktop, x86 version of Office. On the mobile side, they are simply called Word, Excel and Powerpoint. While their names are slightly different, these are still Universal Apps and only the name differs between the two stores.
  • MS15-068 - SERIOUS Hyper-V Security Vulnerabity - This is one of those rare occasions where I'm going to say: put aside everything you are doing, test this MS15-068 patch now, and deploy it as soon as possible.
  • Hacking Team Used UEFI BIOS Rootkits - Hacking Team has not only developed exploits and flaws, but also uses a ‬Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) BIOS rootkit to keep their Remote Control System agent installed in their targets' systems. The use of this type of rootkit means that even if a victim's infected machine undergoes a hard drive format, buys a new HD or reinstalls the Windows operating system, the tools are once again implanted to resume their tasks.
  • How to Really Delete your Files - The ideal process to eliminate any possibility of data recovery of a hard drive consists in demagnetizing the magnetic disks (process also known as degaussing) and destroying the hard drive using a special shredder, which you can see in action in the video below. (There are smaller and more portable models available.) As for SSDs, you will have to make sure that all memory chips have been completely destroyed, as there are machines for recovering data from SSDs where you desolder the chips from the SSD and install them on the machine.
  • HTC Bringing the One M9+ to Europe - HTC today announced it plans to expand availability of the One M9+ outside of Asia to select European markets. The One M9+ is a slightly larger version of the M9 that has different camera and processor configuration. The design is similar to that of the One M9, including the metal materials and BoomSound stereo speakers. The screen measures 5.2 inches and has quad HD resolution (the M9 has a 5-inch full HD screen). The phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 processor with eight cores clocked at 2.2 GHz (the M9 has a Qualcomm processor). The phone has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, with support for memory cards up to 128 GB. The M9+ has a 20-megapixel main camera with a 2-megapixel secondary camera to capture depth-of-field information (similar to the One M8). The front camera relies on HTC's ultrapixel design. HTC gave the One M9+ a fingerprint sensor, which is positioned on the front of the phone in the home button. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, WiFi, and LTE. The phone ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop and Sense 7. Pricing and availability will be announced by individual carriers. HTC hasn't said if the phone will be sold in the U.S.
  • ZTE Reveals the Axon Flagship Phone for the US In Full - ZTE today announced the Axon phone, the first in what will be a line of flagship smartphones. ZTE will use the Axon brand in a way similar to how Samsung uses the Galaxy brand for its best phones. The Axon phone, says ZTE, was "Made in the U.S., for the U.S." The phone had a 5.5-inch quad-HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The Axon is powered by an octa-core 2.0 GHz Snapdragon 810 processor, with an Adreno 450 GPU and 4 GB of system memory. It has 32 GB of built-in storage. ZTE gave the phone a 3,000mAh battery with Qualcomm's QuickCharge technology for speedy recharging. The main camera captures 13-megapixel images and is joined by a 2-megapixel secondary camera to aid in focus and capture depth-of-field data. The main lens has an aperture of f/1.8, can shoot with shutter speeds as quick as 1/90,000th of a second, and captures 4K video. The selfie camera boasts 8-megapixels and an 88-degree field of view. Axon says the phone has high-fidelity sound playback and high-quality audio recording thanks to two microphones and software-based noise suppression techniques. It has two, dedicated chipsets (digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters). The phone was designed with what ZTE calls "Urban Prestige," which it claims "grabs your attention without shouting." The company perceives itself as becoming known for high style. It is made from metal and will be sold in blue, gold, or silver. It will be available via ZTEUSA.com, Amazon, eBay, and Newegg starting July 27. The ZTE Axon, sold unlocked, will cost $449.88. Customers who order soon will receive a free pair of headphones (value $50).
  • Samsung Aiming for 11K Phone Displays  - Samsung Display has started working on a mobile phone display that is over four times sharper than today's highest-resolution (quad-HD) displays. The new display would have a pixel density of 2,250 ppi (pixels per inch), compared to just over 500 ppi for today's quad-HD displays. By another measurement, if quad-HD qualifies ad '2K', this new display would be '11K' resolution, with far more pixels than today's 4K UHD televisions. Samsung claims this sharpness would enable a 3D effect without glasses. The company hopes to have a prototype ready by early 2018. If used in VR applications - such as a phone paired with Samsung's Gear VR accessory - such a display would dramatically improve visible resolution. The lenses in VR goggles magnify the display such that pixels are clearly visible even with today's best quad-HD displays. Samsung displays are also used in Oculus Rift VR goggle
  • Apple to give free iCloud service to users in Greece for 30 days - According to a recent report by ZDNet, the Cupertino-based company will not be charging users of iCloud in Greece for the next month. Initially, due to the financial turmoil, users of iCloud are unable to make credit card transactions or bank account transfers, deeming them incapable of paying for the service. Also, originally, affected users were notified that because of the crisis, their storage would roll back to just 5 GB, the inceptive storage for iCloud. The service normally costs €0.99 for 20 GB of cloud storage, up to €19.99, equivalent to one terabyte of storage. In light of the worsening issue, Apple sent an email to its iCloud users, regarding the aid it is giving out to Greek users. The email mentioned that the 30 days free storage will be applied from the last time that the user renewed his/her iCloud subscription.
  • Comcast Launching A New $15 Internet TV Service Called Stream - Comcast is launching a new streaming cable TV service, called Stream, that will let Xfinity internet customers pay $15 a month on top of their internet bill to watch shows from around a dozen networks on tablet, laptop, and smartphone. Stream is launching in beta form first in Boston at the end of the summer, before moving to Chicago and Seattle before the end of the year. Comcast Stream sounds like an excellent deal. $15/month will get you access to a dozen networks, like NBC and FOX, plus HBO without the need for additional equipment. Just having an internet connection and the Comcast Stream app will get you access to the service anywhere you go. Comcast claims the service offers thousands of on-demand movies and TV shows. It all sounds wonderful, but there's a couple things to consider before buying in.
  • Comcast launches game-streaming beta with EA - As long rumored, Comcast has partnered with Electronic Arts to bring streaming games to its X1 customers. Sign-ups for the public beta begin today via xfinitygames.com, with entry being granted "within the next few days." • This is the BBC Micro Bit mini-PC for UK students - The BBC plans to give a million tiny computers away to 11-year old students at UK schools this fall. The little machine isn't a computer in quite the same way that your desktop, notebook, or tablet is. It can't run Windows or other desktop operating systems. But it is a programmable device that can help kids learn the basics of software and hardware development. The device features an ARM Cortex-M0 micro-controller, a series of LED lights that can be programmed to flash, sensors including a compass, magnetometer, and accelerometer, Bluetooth, and a micro USB port. There are two buttons on the device that can be used to control it, plus a reset button. Students can create programs using a website, test them online, and then transfer them to the Micro Bit using a USB or Bluetooth connection. You can also connect a Micro Bit to an Arduino, Rapsberry Pi, or Intel Galileo board if you want to use it for more complicated functions. So what can you do with this 2 x 1.6 computing device? According to the BBC, you could use the built-in sensors to turn the Micro Bit into a metal detector, use the Bluetooth connection to turn it into a remote control for a DVD player or other devices, or make a simple video game controller.
  • JOY Official TRAILER - Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper Movie 2015 - It's great to see a trailer that doesn't give away the entire film, but on the other hand how many movies is David O. Russell going to do with the exact same cast?
  • Sisters - Official Trailer - Universal has debuted the first trailer for the comedy Sisters, starring Amy Poehler & Tina Fey as wild sisters who throw a raging party at their family house before it's gone. Let's be honest here - this isn't really our kind of movie. For one reason being that this is opening the same day as Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the other reason being it's just not our brand of comedy). That's either a brilliant counter-programming move, or a disaster in the making once Force Awakens takes over, only time will tell. While it's always fun to see Poehler and Fey, this just doesn't look that good at all.

  • Review of 2015 Kindle Paperwhite - Amazon's 1st generation Kindle Paperwhite came into the market 3 years ago. Since then, little has changed about this revolutionary device in terms of hardware. In fact, so little is the difference that if you keep the latest Paperwhite next to the old one with screen off, you'll hardly notice any difference. The curvy, soft-to-touch plastic body along with the USB port, power button and the status light, all remain the same in this new Kindle Paperwhite. The only notable difference between the two is that of the logo on the back and the logo of Kindle that's located in the front.
  • Microsoft To Provide Free Windows 10 Upgrades For 2 To 4 Years - Microsoft has quietly revealed more information about how long it will provide updates for Windows 10, saying in a PowerPoint presentation that free refreshes will last between two and four years. The Redmond, Wash. company revealed the timeline in a slide deck (download here) it posted on its investors website June 26.  In other words, people will be able to keep updating Windows 10 for as long as they want, for free, well beyond 4 years, with no fee ever coming into sight. The only thing that will ever prevent an upgrade is if they eventually release a version that is fundamentally incompatible with hardware. Like, something akin to the OS X cut-over to x86-only. There was no 'fee' a user could pay Apple to make Snow Leopard work on their PowerPC.

Even still, there's room for improvement. Somanchi noted that Gmail is now using an artificial neural network - like what it uses to power Google Search and Google Now - to help detect and block especially sneaky spam. Gmail’s spam filter works on an individual basis, learning the types of messages you do and don't like over time.

AMD Radeon Catalyst 15.7 Driver Released - tech
(hx) 03:47 AM CEST - Jul,09 2015 - Post a comment
AMD's Catalyst 15.7 WHQL driver release brings DX12 and FreeSync CrossfireX support, extends VSR and FRTC compatibility to older GPUs. The extensive list of features as well as performance improvements that AMD's Catalyst 15.6 WHQL driver introduces makes it the company's biggest driver update since the Omega driver released which came out late last year.
This new driver release brings support for AMD's latest Radeon 300 series and previous Radeon GPUs under one roof. Which were previously bifurcated to two non-crosscompatible driver releases, 15.15 for the 300 series and 15.5 for previous graphics cards.

Interestingly, because the new 15.7 drivers are compatible with all of AMD's graphics cards ' except legacy products ' it also enables CrossfireX compatibility between 300 and 200 series graphics cards based on GCN GPUs that feature identical configurations ( identical GCN core counts, texture units, ROPs etc ). For example the R9 380 should now be compatible with the R9 285, the R7 370 with the R7 265 and the R9 390 series with the R9 290 series. The differences in GPU core and VRAM clock speeds may produce varying results however.

AMD Ceases Further Mantle Optimizations - tech
(hx) 02:44 AM CEST - Jul,06 2015 - Post a comment
With Vulkan and DX12 just around the corner, it appears that AMD has officially stopped working on its low-level API, Mantle. While the red team will not be dropping Mantle support for its GCN graphics cards, it has ceased all further Mantle optimizations for its future GPUs.
The situation then is that in discussing the performance results of the R9 Fury X with Mantle, AMD has confirmed that while they are not outright dropping Mantle support, they have ceased all further Mantle optimization. Of particular note, the Mantle driver has not been optimized at all for GCN 1.2, which includes not just R9 Fury X, but R9 285, R9 380, and the Carrizo APU as well. Mantle titles will probably still work on these products – and for the record we can't get Civilization: Beyond Earth to play nicely with the R9 285 via Mantle - but performance is another matter. Mantle is essentially deprecated at this point, and while AMD isn't going out of their way to break backwards compatibility they aren't going to put resources into helping it either. The experiment that is Mantle has come to an end.

TechNews - GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB - tech
(hx) 02:12 PM CEST - Jul,05 2015 - Post a comment
  • MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB - NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 980 Ti was released just a few weeks ago. It is built on the same GM200 GPU as the GeForce Titan X, but has fewer shaders (2816 vs 3072). While the GTX 980 Ti's GPU is still produced on a 28 nanometer process at TSMC in Taiwan, it comes with the fantastic power efficiency optimizations of the NVIDIA Maxwell architecture, which promises lower power draw, higher performance, and reduced fan noise all at the same time.
  • NVIDIA might be working on a GeForce GTX 950 Ti card - To take on the recently announced AMD R7 300 series lineup, NVIDIA is reportedly working on a new GeForce GTX 950 Ti card, based on a new Maxwell GPU. According to the information posted by Videocardz, NVIDIA will be replacing the first generation Maxwell cards with "something new". The new Maxwell GM206-250 GPU will reportedly be the replacement for the GTX 750 Ti and the non-Ti variant.  The GM206-250 is said to be a downgraded version of the GM206-300 GPU which includes 1024 CUDA cores. This GPU is used on the GTX 960. If NVIDIA can extract great performance out of the new GPU in the GTX 950 Ti, AMD may face the heat very soon. Unfortunately, no other info is available, so we will have to wait until more info arrives on the GeForce GTX 950 Ti card.
  • How Much Does Security Software Slow Down Your PC? - One of the main complaints that people express about security software is that it harms the performance of their PC. But how much of an effect does it really have? Independent testing organization AV-Comparatives has conducted a test of 20 leading security products for Windows to assess their impact. Tests were performed on a 64-bit Intel Core i5 machine with Windows 8.1. Based on these scores, the top five with least effect on system performance were; Avast with an impact score of 4.1, Emsisoft on 4.2, Avira on 7.6, Kaspersky Lab on 9.3 and AVG on 12.5. The poorest performers were Quick Heal and ThreatTrack both on a score of 25.7. Ed.note: I don't get. From my experience Avast, AVG - they have worst impact on system performance. On both PC desktop and Android smartphones.
  • Microsoft has released another Windows 10 build, 10162 - Microsoft has pushed out another new build of Windows 10 to Insiders, this time it is build 10162; this is the third build this week that the company has released to Insiders. Earlier this week, the company pushed out 10158 and 10159. According to the announcement post, Microsoft says that this build has improved stability, battery life, performance and comparability to previous releases. Seeing as this build is only one release newer and we are in the final stretch of the RTM build, don't expect many, or possibly any, new features in this release.
  • Malwarebytes is giving away licenses to pirates - Malwarebytes has announced an amnesty program to convert all counterfeit keys of its programs to legitimate ones in order to protect users from further abuse or piracy. Pirated software often comes with its own share of risks such as spyware, keyloggers and of course lack of official support from the developers. Sometimes people end up with such software even without knowing, from vendors or friends who have been using unlicensed or cracked apps. Now, Malwarebytes has offered to help out such users with a 12-month license of its premium anti-malware software. In order to claim a legitimate key, users need to open the software and enter their keys, mention how they obtained those and a new key will be issued immediately. It seems the company is revamping its licensing system and valid license users will have to go through the process as well.
  • Court Says Apple Conspired to Raise E-Book Prices - A U.S. court of appeals today upheld a ruling from a lower court that found Apple guilty of conspiring with book publishers to raise the prices of e-books. Books were generally priced at $9.99 by companies such as Amazon. Following the launch of Apple's iBook store, prices eventually rose to $12.99 and $14.99 for many titles. The appeals court said the initial ruling was correct, as was the injunction imposed against Apple. Today's ruling means Apple is on the hook for a $450 million settlement with attorneys general in 33 states. One judge dissented, believing that Apple's arrival in the market challenged Amazon, which was at the time the dominant player in the e-book market. Apple did not immediately respond to the ruling, but it marks the final chapter of a lengthy legal case that Apple has not been able to beat

The company will make 10,000 units available initially. The phone, sold unlocked, will cost $610 for 16 GB, $740 for 64 GB, and $870 for 128 GB. Turing said it will announce three different colors on July 22 and release an SDK for the phone in August. Turing did not say if it plans to stick to the original Aug. 10 shipping date. The Turing phone is molded from Liquidmorphium that the company claims provides greater tensile strength than either titanium or steel. The handset has a fingerprint sensor built into the side edge for security and uses a magnetic charger to negate the need for ports. Turing says the Android-based handset offers completely secure phone calls and messaging. The device features a 5.5-inch full HD display and it is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 3 GB of RAM. The main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor and the front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. The device has a 3,000mAh battery and supports a range of LTE networks around the world.

Microsoft might be interested in buying AMD - tech
(hx) 07:55 PM CEST - Jun,30 2015 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft corporation has approached Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to start talks about a possible acquisition. KitGuru reports that talks started a few months ago. Exact proposal details are unknown, as are the results of the talk. KitGuru estimates AMD's value at $1.81 billion, which is well within the range of Microsoft's current cash reserve of $95.3 billion. Along with Microsoft, Samsung is also one of the other major firms interested in acquiring AMD.
It is necessary to note that Microsoft does not really need AMD. The software giant needs system-on-chips to power its Xbox game consoles, Lumia smartphones, Surface tablets and possibly other hardware devices. It does not really need server processors or high-end graphics cards. However, AMD's management will unlikely sell a part of AMD to Microsoft since its accelerated processing units (what Microsoft needs) are based on technologies developed for server microprocessors and high-end graphics cards.

The battle for video game console space is very strong. If Microsoft bought AMD, then Sony would be faced with a bad set of choices: put money in Microsoft's pocket every time it sells a PlayStation, or try to create an entirely new platform by using technologies from Intel, Nvidia, ARM or Imagination Technologies.

  • SanDisk's new 200GB microSD card is now on sale - and it costs $239 - SanDisk said in March that the card would be priced at around $400, but it's currently available on Amazon for $239.02 . That doesn't appear to just be a deep discount offered by the retailer either - Amazon says that the regular list price of the 200GB card is $249.99, which suggests that SanDisk had a change of heart on the pricing front. Even so, at just under $240, the 200GB card costs three times more than the 128GB version, which is now available for $78.99. Even at list prices, the 200GB model is still two and a half times pricier than the 128GB.

  • Twitter to Make It Easier to Read About Places and Things - Twitter is testing new ways to surface content about locations and products that might interest users. First, it is experimenting with a feature called Place and Product pages. Twitter says these pages will feature images and video about places or products, including descriptions, web links, and purchasing options. The social network said it will display these details above tweets pertaining to that particular place or product. In addition to Product and Place pages, Twitter is testing other ways for users to connect with brands. It is letting a select bunch of "influencers" create collections of products and places they like and then share those collections with the broader public. The collections, mostly from celebrities, retailers, TV channels, and news organizations, can be accessed from the Twitter profile of whatever entity created the collection. Twitter is starting with a limited number of place and product pages and celebrity collections and will expand over time based on their success. Twitter said these changes will reach Twitter.com and the Android and iOS apps (via update) soon.

NVIDIA GeForce 353.38 Hotfix Driver - tech
(hx) 01:56 AM CEST - Jun,28 2015 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released a hotfix driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, this new driver fixes the Chrome Crashes/Freezes/TDRs that various users have reported, as well as the delays when starting or switching apps & games with GSYNC enabled.

This driver, version 353.38, iis a GeForce Hot Fix driver, version 353.38 that addresses the following issues:

  • Chrome Crashes/Freezes/TDRs
  • Delays when starting or switching apps & games with GSYNC enabled

A GeForce driver is an incredibly complex piece of software, with more lines of code than the entire Windows OS. We have an army of software engineers constantly adding features and fixing bugs. These changes are checked into the main driver branches, which are eventually run through a massive QA process and released.

Since we have so many changes being checked in, we usually try to align driver releases with significant game or product releases. This process has served us pretty well over the years but it has one significant weakness. Sometimes a change that is important to many users might end up sitting and waiting until we are able to release the driver.

The GeForce Hotfix driver is our way to trying to get some of these fixes out to you more quickly. These drivers are basically the same as the previous released version, with a small number of additional targeted fixes. The fixes that make it in are based in part on your feedback in the Driver Feedback threads and partly on how realistic it is for us to quickly address them. These fixes (and many more) will be incorporated into the next official driver release, at which time the Hotfix driver will be taken down.

To be sure, these Hotfix drivers are beta, optional and provided as-is. They are run through a much abbreviated QA process. The sole reason they exist is to get fixes out to you more quickly. The safest option is to wait for the next WHQL certified driver. But we know that many of you are willing to try these out.

These HotFix drivers represent a lot of additional work by our engineering teams, I hope they provide value for you. We’ll try it out and see if people like the idea and want us to continue.
