Am I the only one that's incredibly suspicious of why microsoft is so keen for everyone to "upgrade" to Windows 10? MS has never been one to give away anything for free, they have gone out of their way to prevent their software from being used for free , they have never offered a new Windows version for free to existing users and yet now all of a sudden they, out of the goodness of their hearts, are willing to give Windows 10 as a free upgrade to all legit Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users?  And not only that, but they also make sure to "remind" you constantly about the chance to "upgrade".  Before Microsoft pushed that Windows 10 nag update (KB3035583), I did not worry much about forced updates. But with that update, Microsoft taught me that I really want to be in control. I don't want to fight with the OS trying to repeatedly defer updates. And I don't want to be subject to future updates that might decide to nag me about something else, some new product Microsoft wants to sell!
  • Should You Buy a Sound Card? An Enthusiast's Perspective - That's still debatable. For the money, there's no doubt some folks would benefit more from a new graphics card, flash drive or anything else with a tangible performance gain. Hell, if you were careful enough, you could buy both a mainstream GPU and SSD for about the same price as the Xonar DX and ATH-M50s, which would probably make you happier if you're stuck with Intel graphics and a disk drive. Even if you have a high-end GeForce and an uber fast 1TB SSD, you might simply not care about audio quality. I know someone who's fine with playing CDs of music downloaded off YouTube, but maybe they just need to hear the difference
  • Iiyama rolls out G-MASTER GB2788HS-B1 red Eagle 27-inch FreeSync gaming monitor - Iiyama has announced a new gaming monitor with support for AMD FreeSync, the G-MASTER GB2788HS-B1 red eagle. The 27-inch monitor comes with a TN panel and supports 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution. It offers a refresh rate of 144Hz, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 nits maximum brightness, 1ms response time, and 170.160 degree viewing angles. The combination of a TN panel, FreeSync and 1ms response time means the monitor will not exhibit any ghosting or smearing issues, giving you an edge when playing against your friends. Connectors on offer include a DVI-D, HDMI, and a DisplayPort. Other highlights include twin 2.5W stereo speakers, VESA mount, black tuner, X-Res technology, and Apple MAC compatibility. The monitor will be available this coming week in Europe, for a price-tag of around 399 euros.
  • Google Announces The ASUS OnHub - Whether you're chatting with friends, streaming music or video calling family, Wi-Fi matters. You should have more router options that don't involve spotty connections, messy cords and complicated settings. That's why Google introduced the first OnHub router this summer, designed to be fast, secure and easy to use-not to mention attractive enough to put out in the open, where Wi-Fi works best.
  • Dear Microsoft: Please Stop Breaking My Perfectly Good Windows 7 - How can vendors expect to migrate reluctant users to more reliable and up-to-date operating systems like Windows 10 or El Capitan -- especially when upgrade notices and reminders break earlier versions?
  • Latest Windows 10 Preview from Microsoft Fixes Bugs - Microsoft has released another technical preview of Windows 10 Mobile. Rather than stuff the release with new features, Microsoft said it focused on cleaning up bugs and improving performance. Chiefly, build 10581 will allow people to upgrade from earlier preview builds without first reverting to Windows Phone 8.1; testers can go straight from 10549 or 10572 to 10581. Microsoft resolved an issue that prevented "Hey, Cortana" from functioning on the Lumia 930 and 1520; made it possible to select photos for sharing through third-party messaging apps; and tweaked text prediction and auto-correct. Microsoft says battery life should be improved, as should video recording and visual voicemail syncing. The Windows 10 Mobile technical preview is not for consumers and is for testing purposes only. Microsoft is expected to release Windows 10 Mobile to the general public in December.
  • Microsoft will make Windows 10 a recommended update in 2016 - Microsoft really wants users to upgrade their PCs to Windows 10. Really. In a post on the Windows Blog, Windows and Devices head Terry Myerson said that the reservation-system update process for Windows 10 has worked well so far. To get Windows 10 on more PCs, though, Microsoft has streamlined the manual upgrade process, and it'll soon begin pushing out the final version of Win10 to Windows Update.
  • Google May Combine Android and Chrome By 2017 - Google plans to merge its Chrome operating system with Android as soon as 2017, reports the Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with Google's plans. Google has already been working to bridge the Chrome-Android gap for two years and has recently made progress. Google may show off an early build of the merged operating system as soon as next year. Chrome OS runs on inexpensive laptops, called Chromebooks, but has a limited user base of just 3% of the PC market. Following the OS tie-up, Google is expected to make laptops and PCs that run Android, complete with access to the Play Store and the apps therein. Google hopes to see Search and YouTube installed on as many machines as possible, and sees this as one way to reach that goal. Android is the world's dominant mobile operating system. Chromebooks will be given a new name, as Google intends to keep the Chrome brand for its internet browser. Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently said, "mobile as a computing paradigm is eventually going to blend with what we think of as desktop today." Google did not comment on the Journal's report.
  • If You're Not Paranoid, You're Crazy - As government agencies and tech companies develop more and more intrusive means of watching and influencing people, how can we live free lives?
  • Adobe Releases Security Update For Shockwave Player - Another month, another critical vulnerability in an Adobe product. Adobe has released a security update for Adobe Shockwave Player. Exploitation of this vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. Users and administrators are encouraged to review Adobe Security Bulletin APSB15-26(link is external) and apply the necessary updates.
  • TalkTalk admits some bank details unencrypted - Last week, TalkTalk - one of the UK's largest providers of broadband, landline and pay-TV services - revealed that its website had been targeted by a "significant and sustained cyberattack". It also said that some customer information, including banking details, "may have been accessed". An investigation - led by London's Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit (MPCCU) - resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old boy in Northern Ireland on Monday, and now a second teenager has been arrested in London. Meanwhile, TalkTalk has disclosed further information about the extent of the data breach today. The company says that "less than 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers" were affected. But while TalkTalk attempts to downplay the severity of the breach, Chris Choi from ITV News says the company has admitted to him that those 21,000 customers' banking details were not encrypted.
  • Samsung Pay Wins Support from More Banks - Samsung has said Samsung Pay will soon be supported by more financial institutions. This means a broader range of consumers will be able to add their credit or debit cards to Samsung Pay. Some of the new banks include Chase, PNC Bank, TD Bank, SunTrust, Fifth Third Bank, First Hawaiian, Key Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union, Virginia Credit Union, Associated Bank, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union, and People's United Bank. Each of these card issuers will be added to Samsung Pay over the next few months. The American Express, MasterCard, and Visa payment networks already support Samsung Pay, and Samsung said Discover will join early next year. Moreover, Samsung Pay will soon add support for gift cards, loyalty cards, and store-issued credit cards. Samsung Pay is compatible with NFC- and MST-equipped terminals, unlike Apple Pay and Android Pay, which only work with NFC. Samsung says about three-quarters of payments made so far via Samsung Pay have been at MST-equipped terminals. Samsung Pay is available to the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, and Note 5 on AT&T, Sprint. T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless.
  • Verizon Seeking Permission from FCC for WiFi Calling - Verizon Wireless has requested a waiver from the FCC so it can eventually offer WiFi calling to its customers. The waiver is needed because TTY services, which carriers are obligated to offer, are not reliable over WiFi. As such, Verizon will need to replace TTY with real-time text (RTT) in order to remain compliant with the law. Verizon's request follows similar actions taken by rival AT&T. The FCC granted AT&T's waiver request earlier this month and the carrier subsequently launched WiFi calling on the iPhone. Sprint and T-Mobile have both offered WiFi calling for about a year, though neither requested a waiver from the FCC. Verizon didn't say how quickly it expects to bring WiFi calling to its handsets.
  • Scratch Wireless to Start Charging for Cell Calls, Texts - Scratch Wireless, a Sprint MVNO, said it can no longer afford to give services away for free and will begin charging for some features. Scratch Wireless has historically offered free WiFi calling and free messaging via cellular and WiFi. Scratch sold unlimited voice minutes on Sprint's network for $15 per month. Moving forward, Scratch will charge $10 per month for unlimited calling on both WiFi and cellular. "As other costs go up, like text 911 and others, it is impossible for us to completely absorb the costs of WiFi calling and cellular text messages," said Scratch founder and CEO Alan Berrey in a statement provided to Fierce Wireless. "Our customers still have access to free unlimited text messaging on WiFi, free unlimited MMS on WiFi, and free unlimited data on WiFi. Again, we are only changing WiFi calling and cellular text messaging." Scratch is now bundling cellular messaging services into its data packages. Scratch's entry-level data plan costs $1.99 for 50MB for 24 hours, and its top-end data plan costs $24.99 for 1GB for 30 days.
  • Sprint Offering $20 LTE Starter Plan - Sprint has added a new option to its list of service plans. The Starter Unlimited Data Plan includes 1GB of high-speed data and unlimited 2G data for $20 per month. Sprint says subscribers to this plan will have the option to buy access to more LTE data, but they won't be hit with overage charges. Unlimited talk and text costs another $20. Together, 1GB of LTE data and unlimited talk and text costs $40 per month. Sprint is making a similar alteration to its Sprint Family Share Pack. Subscribers to family plans will have access to unlimited 2G data if they burn through their LTE 4G allotment. They, too, will have the option to buy more high-speed access at $15 per 1GB. Last, Sprint has raised the price of its Unlimited High-Speed Data Plan, which includes 3GB of mobile hotspot data and unlimited talk/text/LTE, to $70 per month. All these options include Sprint Global Roaming and are available starting Oct. 30.

Marquez knocked Vale's foot off the peg. One should also watch the whole sequence for a number of laps leading up to the incident. Marquez is not blameless. Jorge should just cork it. Valentino Rossi has filed an appeal against his Sepang penalty to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in an attempt to get his last place start for the Valencia title decider overturned - or, just as significantly, delayed.

Ohhhh man this is one hell of a raunchy film, and not in a good way. At least they admit that De Niro's character is a "pervert", because damn is he an asshole. The cast includes Julianne Hough, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney, Zoey Deutch, Jason Mantzoukas, Adam Pally and Henry Zebrowski.

  • Apple Releases iOS 9.1 for All -  This week Apple has made the final build of iOS 9.1 available to the general public. iOS 9.1 brings aboard support for Unicode 7.0 and 8.0, which adds more than 150 new emoji. The update provides a fix for Live Photos on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which will no longer record video when it senses vertical movement of the iPhone itself. iOS 9.1 also smooths out performance and resolves a number of bugs. iOS 9.1 is free to download.

  • How is NSA breaking so much crypto? - There have been rumors for years that the NSA can decrypt a significant fraction of encrypted Internet traffic. In 2012, James Bamford published an article quoting anonymous former NSA officials stating that the agency had achieved a 'computing breakthrough' that gave them 'the ability to crack current public encryption.' The Snowden documents also hint at some extraordinary capabilities: they show that NSA has built extensive infrastructure to intercept and decrypt VPN traffic and suggest that the agency can decrypt at least some HTTPS and SSH connections on demand. However, the documents do not explain how these breakthroughs work.
  • Firefox FindMyDevice Lets Hackers Wipe or Lock Phones, Change PINs - Vulnerabilities in Mozilla's Find My Device service enabled hackers to carry out attacks that locked the screens of smartphones running Firefox OS, change PINs, make the devices ring, and even wipe all data with only a few clicks.
  • YouTube Red Nixes Ads for $10 Per Month - Google has announced YouTube Red, a new video service that will let people enjoy an ad-free experience for $10 per month. The service works online, and on phones and tablets. Videos may be saved on mobile devices for offline playback. It will be possible for videos to play in the foreground as well as the background for listening purposes. Google said a separate YouTube Music app, which will include music videos and artist discovery, will accompany YouTube Red. Google says YouTube Red works with Google Play Music, so subscribers to one automatically gain access to the other. YouTube Red launches on Oct. 28. Google is offering a free 30-day trial so consumers can test the service. Google says member-only original content will reach subscribers early next year. The free, ad-supported version of YouTube will continue to be available online and via mobile devices.
  • Google Play Store Update Hitting Android Devices - Google has redesigned the Play Store and is pushing the new version to Android devices this week. The refreshed content store is significantly altered and makes locating apps, games, movies, TV, and music easier on the eyes thanks to new tabs. For example, the landing page has clear and obvious sections for Apps & Games, and Entertainment. These tabs are further broken down into sub tabs with app/game categories and so on. The Play Store also now makes it easier to see which apps are compatible with Android Wear thanks to an icon that appears in the app description. The updated Play Store is being pushed out slowly, so it may take a while to reach all devices.
  • HTC One A9: First Phone To Work on Verizon Without CDMA - HTC will sell an unlocked version of its new One A9 that can be used on Verizon's LTE network, even though the phone lacks the legacy CDMA technology found in all other Verizon phones to date. That makes the One A9 the first phone announced for use with Verizon in LTE-only mode. Verizon has upgraded its entire network footprint to LTE technology, including VoLTE (Voice over LTE, which enables voice calls using only the LTE network.) These upgrades make older CDMA technology obsolete, but the CDMA network will continue to operate until around 2021, and Verizon phones so far have supported the older CDMA technology in addition to LTE. Verizon has separately announced plans to offer an LTE-only phone by the end of this year, but has yet to announce one that it will sell directly. The One A9 variant in question will work with Verizon LTE after a software update, available shortly after launch. It will also work with AT&T and T-Mobile LTE and 3G networks. A separate version is designed for Sprint LTE and CDMA networks. HTC says previously-activated SIM cards (i.e., those pulled from a working Verizon phone) will have full support to voice, SMS/MMS, and data services via LTE on the One A9. Customers will not be able to activate a new Verizon SIM on the A9, nor can the A9 be activated in Verizon stores. The unlocked One A9 comes with an unlocked bootloader, 6 months of Google Play Music for free, and Uh Oh Protection. It costs $399 and will be available in the weeks ahead.
  • Microsoft May Give Windows 10 Mobile Payments - Microsoft is weighing what to do with the mobile wallet app that's part of the Windows 10 Mobile platform. The operating system already has a basic wallet app (since Windows Phone 8) for storing credit card and loyalty card data, but it stops short of making mobile payments. Joe Belfiore, corporate VP of Microsoft's operating systems group, said, "Windows is going to have a wallet concept. You've seen it on phones before. We're going to continue to iterate it. We're going to think about the range of payment scenarios." Belfiore did not say if or when any type of mobile payment service might launch, nor what technology it might rely on. However, the spec page for the recently announced Lumia 950 says the smartphone includes "secure NFC for payment." When asked exactly what that referred to, Microsoft told Phone Scoop, "We have nothing to share." Belfiore admitted that mobile payments are not easy to implement. "[Mobile payments] is just one of these things that is a massive network of complexity," Belfiore said. "I think the biggest challenge is, what effect will cause enough of the right things to align that you'll get a good experience with all the places that you want it to happen in?" Apple, Google, and Samsung all offer mobile payment platforms that vary a bit in how they function. Despite support from handset makers, carriers, retailers, and financial institutions, mobile payments have yet to go mainstream. Even so, it would behoove Microsoft to make sure its smartphone platform can compete with the industry leaders.

  • You can now preorder the 1TB - i7 Surface Book... for $3,199.00 - If you looked at the pre-orders right after Microsoft's October 6th devices event and were disappointed by the lack of a 1 TB option for the Surface Book, fret no longer. Microsoft is now offering this option complete with a Intel i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and the dGPU built into the keyboard. Of course, having the best-of-the-best comes at a price. Customers who want Microsoft's top of the line notebook will have to drop $3,199. The $3,199.00 price tag means customers who want the most storage out of Microsoft's "ultimate laptop" will have to shell out an extra $500 to double their space over the 512 GB model. The $3,199.00 price tag rounds out the Surface Book tiers as the most expensive option Microsoft has ever offered. • Next big Windows 10 release will ease activation hassles - The latest preview release of Windows 10 includes the first glimpse of a new feature designed to eliminate one specific activation headache. When this change rolls out to the general public next month, you'll be able to use your Windows 7 or 8.1 product key to complete a Windows 10 upgrade.
  • Windows 10 Upgrade Nags Become More Aggressive - Are you running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and not feeling the love for Windows 10? It seems Microsoft is making it harder for users to opt out of upgrading. Reports are circulating that some users are being presented with dialog boxes that only give them the option to start the upgrade process or reschedule it for a later date. Others are finding that the Windows Update screen is only offering them the option to begin the upgrade process, with other system updates being hidden from view. Is there anything you can do to reverse this situation? Right now there isn't. Even Josh Mayfield, the maker of the GWX Control Panel -- an excellent utility that has previously allowed users to opt out of and avoid the nags to upgrade to Windows 10 -- doesn't have an answer at present.
  • Watch a 'USB killer' stick destroy a laptop when it's plugged in - The USB Killer, which looks like a normal USB stick, was created by a Russian security researcher known as "Dark Purple." • Russian Hackers Breached Dow Jones - Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal and other influential financial publications, said Friday it was looking into a report that Russian hackers had used information stolen from its servers to trade on before it became public. Bloomberg, citing four sources it did not identify, said the FBI, Secret Service and the Securities and Exchange Commission were leading the investigation of the intrusion. The incident was said to be "far more serious" than a data breach disclosed by Dow Jones a week ago, according to the Bloomberg report. Dow Jones CEO William Lewis said last week that his company was the target of a hack that may have exposed the credit and debit card information of "fewer than 3,500 individuals." In a statement to NBC News on Friday, Dow Jones indicated it was unaware of the broader intrusion.
  • Adobe plugs critical vulnerability in Flash with emergency update - Flash users, it's time to update the plugin ASAP. Adobe has today issued an emergency security update to patch a critical vulnerability, just three days after the last update. Adobe says the vulnerability could potentially give an attacker control of an affected system. This update will bring the Flash NPAPI plugin up to version 19.0.0.226 on Windows and OS X clients. Chrome and Edge will automatically update themselves with the latest plugins for those browsers, according to the security bulletin. Peter Pi of Trend Micro says this vulnerability could allow attackers to get around mitigation techniques that Adobe and Google created together if it's left unpatched
  • New Adobe Flash Zero-Day Used in Pawn Storm Campaign - Trend Micro researchers have discovered that the attackers behind Pawn Storm, the long-running cyber-espionage campaign, are using an Adobe Flash zero-day exploit code for their attacks. The particular affected vulnerability is still unpatched, making Flash users vulnerable to attacks. In this most recent campaign of Pawn Storm, several Ministries of Foreign Affairs received spear phishing e-mails. These contain links to sites that supposedly contain information about current events, but in reality, these URLs hosted the exploit
  • Apple Found Guilty of Infringing U. of Wisconsin Patent - Apple is facing a massive judgment in a patent complaint concerning processors found in the iPhone and iPad. A jury in Madison, Wisconsin, found Apple guilty of using a patent owned by the University of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) without permission. The patent involves increasing the efficiency of chips. The technology is found in the A7, A8, and A8x processors, which power the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus, and the iPad Air 2. Apple sought to have the patent declared invalid, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected Apple's bid. WARF originally filed the lawsuit in January 2014 and just recently filed a second lawsuit concerning the A9 and A9x chips, which are in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and the forthcoming iPad Pro. Apple could be on the hook for up to $862 million. The trial is now moving to the penalty phase to determine how much Apple owes. Apple maintained its innocence.
  • EU Court To Decide If Streaming Pirated Movies Is Legal - Seeking clarification, a Dutch court has referred several streaming related questions to the EU Court of Justice. The questions relate to a case between local anti-piracy group BREIN and a seller of so-called "pirate boxes" that come pre-loaded with streaming plugins. It is currently unclear whether streaming pirated movies is permitted under EU law.
  • Sprint to Start Throttling Heaviest Users - Sprint has said it will begin slowing the data speeds of its heaviest users, which amounts to a massive policy change for the carrier. Sprint has long sought to differentiate itself from competitors by maintaining an unlimited plan with no throttling or overage charges. Beginning today, however, customers who exceed 23GB of data in a single billing period will see their data speeds reduced when cell sites are congested or constrained. "This QoS practice is intended to protect against a small minority of unlimited customers who use high volumes of data and unreasonably take up network resources during times when the network is constrained," explained Sprint. "It's important to note that this QoS technique operates in real-time and only applies if a cell site is constrained. Prioritization is applied or removed every 20 milliseconds. And performance for the affected customer returns to normal as soon as traffic on the cell site also returns to normal, or the customer moves to a non-constrained site." Sprint says the new policy will protect the network for the 97% of customers who don't use excessive amounts of data. Sprint claims the 23GB threshold is far more than most customers ever use, and can be used to load 600 photos, stream 60 hours of music, or stream 50 hours of video. T-Mobile has a similar QoS policy in place.
  • T-Mobile Brings Back 10GB for $120 Family Promo - T-Mobile today resurrected its "10gigs4all" promotion, which includes 10GB of LTE 4G data, unlimited talked and text, and all the Uncarrier benefits for four lines for a total of $120 per month. Two lines can snag the 10GB offering for $100 per month. T-Mobile normally charges $20 per each additional line. Under the terms of this promotion, the fourth line is essentially "free." T-Mobile says customers who sign up for this plan can keep it for as long as they remain T-Mobile customers.

Game Ready Nvidia drivers will require registration - tech
(hx) 09:58 PM CEST - Oct,16 2015 - Post a comment / read (20)
If you own an Nvidia graphics card, GFE governs the use of a number of features, including in-game video recording, Shield streaming, Battery Boost, and game optimizations. The company is making several new changes to the application today, and announcing a major change to how it distributes driver updates that could have far-reaching implications. First, the updates. Starting immediately, Nvidia's GameStream technology will allow users to stream titles in 4K at 60 FPS, with support for 5.1 audio, if your hardware can handle that output level in the first place. You'll need a Shield TV to receive a 4K stream from a local PC, and Nvidia recommends a wired connection for best performance. The other new feature introduced today is the ability to broadcast to YouTube Live, the streaming giant's new service meant to compete with Twitch. GeForce Experience can manage both logins and stream to either service.

By far the biggest announcement today is a fundamental change to how Nvidia distributes its driver updates. One of the differences between Teams Red and Green is that Nvidia has often been faster off the block when it comes to Day 1 support for features like SLI. While DirectX 12 is expected to help level this difference, since it moves support for multi-GPU configurations to the developer (and allows for fewer driver-side optimizations in general), early driver support for DX11 remains important. Up until now, those game-ready drivers have been available to anyone with a GeForce card. Going forward, that's going to change.

In the future, only GeForce owners who both install GeForce Experience and register the service by providing Nvidia with an email address will have access to Game-Ready driver downloads, which will be pushed exclusively through GFE. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to download a driver from Nvidia.com - it just means that the drivers on the website will be updated periodically, not on a per-release basis.

Update: In a clever tweet, AMD claimed that it does not require any email registration from its users so they can download latest drivers for their cards.

AMD Catalyst 15.10 Beta Driver Released - tech
(hx) 05:58 PM CEST - Oct,14 2015 - Post a comment
AMD has released a new set of Catalyst beta drivers today, bringing the latest optimizations for Ashes of the Singularity to the company's Radeon graphics cards. The Catalyst 15.10 beta drivers primarily focus on optimizations for Ashes of the Singularity, which is set to launch through Steam's Early Access program on October 22nd. These drivers provide performance optimizations and fixes for several issues, including one where the driver would crash while playing the game in DirectX 12 mode. As for other fixes, the Catalyst 15.10 drivers now allows gamers to play Star Wars Battlefront on high-performance GPUs in systems with switchable graphics. AMD has also taken some steps to address Grand Theft Auto V crashes on Radeon R9 390X graphics cards.

They've have been coated in black to help them blend in with the shroud design. Although it put the DirectCU II cooler on this card, most Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum cards will likely spend their life hooked up to a more exotic cooling solution.
  • BitFenix announces the Nova chassis for gamers on a budget - BitFenix has announced the new Nova chassis today, targeted at the budget segment. It is claimed to offer an impressive combination of performance, style, and silence at a highly competitive price. The case offers a simplistic design, aluminum badge, color options, and an optional side panel, making it quite an attractive looking budget case. For optimum cooling inside, there are long air vents along the sides of its front. This also allows the top and front panel of the case to be completely closed, helping block fan-noise from escaping the enclosure and to also help avoid dust build up inside.
  • Surface Book laptop with 13.5-inch display starting at $1499 - In addition to the Surface Pro 4, Microsoft has unveiled another brand-new PC. The Microsoft Surface Book is Microsoft's first-ever convertible laptop, and it looks like it's aimed at people who are intrigued by the Surface Pro 4 but aren't interested in a tablet. The Surface Book includes a 13.5-inch display with a pixel density of 267PPI. That display is optically bonded to the glass, which means it should look good.
  • Here is how the new liquid cooling system works in the Surface Pro 4 - Microsoft's previous generation of Surface has a liquid cooling system to keep the device cool even when running CPU intensive tasks for a longer period of time. It featured a horseshoe-shaped copper heat pipe filled with water; the apex of the horseshoe covers the CPU and during heating, the water inside the pipe is transformed into vapor, which then travels down the heat pipe to the fan portion where it condenses, and then travels back to the CPU
  • iPhone 6s Chipgate: TSMC vs. Samsung - Does iPhone 6s Chipgate slow your phone down? The iPhone 6s actually has two different processors, the Apple A9 Samsung edition and TSMC edition. With rumors of Chipgate making a huge difference to battery life and performance I wanted to put it to the test.
  • Apple: A9-Driven Battery Variances Limited to 2-3% - Apple has responded to a series of claims that suggest there are palpable differences in battery life produced by the Samsung- and TSMC-sourced A9 processor in its new iPhones. Both Samsung and TSMC are making the A9 processor for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Samsung's version uses a 14nm process and has a slightly smaller footprint than the TSMC 16nm chip. Several benchmark tests (AnTuTu, Geekbench, et al) imply that Samsung's A9 drains the battery up to two hours sooner than TSMC's A9. Apple says such tests aren't realistic and real-world variances are in the order of 2-3% - or about 12 to 15 minutes per day under normal usage. "Certain manufactured lab tests which run the processors with a continuous heavy workload until the battery depletes are not representative of real-world usage, since they spend an unrealistic amount of time at the highest CPU performance state," said Apple in a statement provided to Techcrunch. "It's a misleading way to measure real-world battery life. Our testing and customer data show the actual battery life of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, even taking into account variable component differences, vary within just 2-3% of each other." Such variances fall into acceptable norms for most consumer electronics.

  • Verizon to Raise Unlimited Data Plan By $20 - Verizon Wireless intends to increase the price of its grandfathered unlimited mobile data plan by $20 per month to a total of $49.99. The change affects only 1% of Verizon customers, who've held onto these unlimited plans for some time. Verizon doesn't offer unlimited plans to new customers any more, who instead need to purchase mobile data in buckets. Any customer who has an unlimited plan under contract will be able to keep the current pricing until the contract terms are fulfilled; however, the majority of people with unlimited data plans are off contract. The $49.99 includes unlimited data, but not voice/messaging services; those cost extra. To offset the increased price a little bit, Verizon will allow people with these old unlimited plans to purchase devices through an installment plan, rather than the full retail cost. Verizon currently offers data in S, M, L, XL, and XXL allotments in prices ranging from $30 for 1GB to $100 for 15GB. Verizon said the change will go into effect after Nov. 15. Government and corporate accounts will not be affected.
  • Facebook to Test 'Reactions' Rather than 'Dislike' - Facebook today said it is prepared to expand the way people interact with posts in the Newsfeed by providing more than just the Like button. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently hinted that the company is working on a way to show more emotional responses to posts. Reactions, which include Like, Love, Haha, Yay, Wow, Sad, and Angry, appear to be the answer. Facebook plans to test Reactions in Ireland and Spain starting this week to gauge how effective they are. Facebook said it will infer people who interact with posts — whether it be to like a story or share empathy - will want to to see similar posts more often. Facebook didn't say how long it plans to test the feature before rolling it out to everyone.

Microsoft held a massive event Tuesday in New York City at which the company unveiled a number of new devices, including the hot Surface Pro 4, new Lumia-branded Windows 10 smartphones with Continuum, and the surprise no one saw coming, the slick Surface Book hybrid laptop. But before any of those new devices were actually shown, Microsoft demoed some exciting new HoloLens mixed-reality technology, dubbed Project X-Ray, that allowed a gamer - named Dan -- to battle holographic robots right on stage, live. During the demo, Dan 'held' a holographic gauntlet gun that he used to fire lasers and blast robots as they hovered in the air or broke through the makeshift walls. Live at the event, onlookers could see what Dan was seeing in his HoloLens augmented reality lenses up on the big screens and the effects and interactions were impressive.

  • Apple Took Steps to Protect New iPhones from Liquids - The Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are more resistant to water damage than their predecessors, according to iFixit. The company tore down the new iPhones and discovered the frame supports a gasket that helps protect against liquid ingress. Moreover, cable connectors on the logic board - a weak link in any electronic device - are sealed with silicon. iFixit notes that Apple did not take any apparent measures to protect the speaker nor the SIM card tray, which still allow some liquid to seep in. The subtle changes made by Apple do appear to help the phone survive quick dunks in water, as evidenced by various videos posted across social media, but Apple is making no claims about the new iPhones being waterproof or even water resistant.

As part of the breach, 15 million T-Mobile customers had their personal data stolen from the company. The theft affected customer data ranging back two years, from September 2013 through September 2015. The stolen data included names, addresses and birth dates, as well as encrypted social security numbers and ID numbers (such as driver's license or passport number). The company notes that no credit card numbers or bank account information was taken. Whilst the more sensitive data was encrypted, the company states that this encryption may have been compromised by the attackers, but does not mention the type of encryption used or why this might be the case.

  • Adblock extension with 40 million users sells to mystery buyer - Adblock, a popular extension for blocking advertising in Chrome and Safari with more than 40 million users, was quietly sold today. The extension displayed a popup on October 1 saying that it is now allowing Eye's 0acceptable advertising - which allows advertisers to buy their way onto the whitelist - through the filter. hat's strange is that the company won't disclose who it's been sold to, why it was sold, or how much it was sold for. For the extension's claimed 40 million users this raises an interesting question: Can the extension continue to be trusted if the new proprietor is entirely anonymous? TNW contacted Adblock's remaining staff to ask if they'd disclose the buyer but the company refused, saying that the purchaser had specifically asked not to be named. The only thing the team would tell us is that the tool's creator Michael Gundlach will no longer have any relationship with the company - that probably means he's cashed out. Adblock's previous director, Gabriel Cubbage, is now running things under the new owner.

  • Why Sweden Is Shifting To A 6-Hour Workday - The eight-hour workday hasn't changed much since Henry Ford first experimented with it for factory workers. Now, Americans work slightly longer - an average 8.7 hours - though more time goes into email, meetings, and Facebook than whatever our official job duties actually are. Is it time to rethink how many hours we spend at the office? In Sweden, the six-hour workday is becoming common. (Ed.note: Damn, my average is 13 hours)
  • NASA Reports flowing water on Mars - The findings, which are described in the journal Nature Geoscience, offer an explanation for peculiar, long streaks that sometimes appear on sloping Martian terrain. The dark features, which can reach 5 meters wide and more than 100 meters long, were first noticed in 2010. By analyzing their reflected light signature, a team of eight scientists has concluded that the streaks consist of mineral salts that easily absorb moisture-and that flowing water is the likeliest explanation for their appearance. The Red Planet has been known for years to have ice, and its surface bears the topographical scars of ancient water flow. This latest research, though, is the first to provide compelling evidence for the ongoing existence of flowing water on Mars.

"If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," Professor Hawking told El País. "Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach," he said. The physicist, who has suffered from motor neurone disease since his twenties, explained that the existence of aliens is beyond doubt. TechNews - Samsung launches its fastest SSD - tech
(hx) 10:13 AM CEST - Sep,27 2015 - Post a comment
  • Samsung launches its fastest SSD, up to 4 TB storage options coming - Samsung has announced its fastest mass-market SSD in the form of the 950 PRO, which will go on sale next month. This latest drive from Samsung aims to take this further by being the first Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe*) M.2 form factor SSD based on 2nd generation vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology. Users will need to have a desktop or a laptop which has a M.2 PCIe slot in order to use the 950 PRO SSD. The PCIe Gen.3 x4 specification offers significant improvement over the traditional SATA interface used by other SSDs, however, it does mean that not all computers can make use of the latest Samsung SSD. Samsung also announced that it is working on 3rd generation V-NAND technology which will be used in its products in the near future. The company also revealed that it will be launching the 850 PRO SATA SSD next year, based on this technology with up to 4 TB of storage. The 950 PRO SSD will be available in 256 GB and 512 GB options which will cost $199.99 and $349.99 respectively. Both the drives will go on sale in October
  • Intel 750 Series SSD firmware update speeds up boot times - Intel has released a firmware update for the 750 Series drives that should help alleviate the lengthy boot time issue. Users can download the latest Intel Solid-State Drive Data Center Tool to run the upgrade. The new firmware update will also be available in upcoming versions of Intel's SSD Toolbox and Firmware Update Tool. Even with the update, Intel notes that booting off a 750 Series drive will likely still take a bit longer than SATA drives, since PCIe devices reportedly need more time to initialize. Owners that have installed the firmware update report a substantial improvement in boot times, so if you have a 750 Series drive in your system, be sure to check out the update.

Around the same time one of Pirate Bay's moderators was arrested, fueling the idea that the site had been seriously compromised. The events resulted in the longest ever period of downtime for the site, nearly two months, and led to a revolt among the site's moderators. While it was generally believed that Pirate Bay needed time to recover the site from various backups, The TPB team now says that this was not the case. In fact, Pirate Bay's servers were never raided by the police. The police did raid the Nacka datacenter but instead of Pirate Bay's servers they raided those of EZTV. Sladinki007 of the former EZTV team confirmed that their hardware was indeed taken, but the Pirate Bay team says they were barely hit.

When it comes to choosing professional software, an obvious choice is Microsoft's Office suite, that is comprised of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and more. While previous iOS devices did not require payment for the use of Office, those purchasing an iPad Pro will be required to purchase a subscription to Office 365. This is not something new or unique to the iPad Pro as Microsoft has a strict policy about what kind of devices will receive its Office suite for free. Unfortunately, due to the 12.9-inch screen size of the new iPad Pro, users will be required to pay for Office 365. Other devices below 10.1-inches will still be able to use Office for free. The iPad Pro is slated for release in November. Apple will offer an optional keyboard and Pencil accessory with its 12.9" unit, which will start at $799 USD.

Consumers have to meet several conditions to get that deal. The special lease offer is available for a limited time only at Sprint-branded retail stores. The $1 price is for a 16GB iPhone 6s. Leasing a 16GB iPhone 6s Plus will cost $5 per month. Both lease prices are contingent upon customers trading in an iPhone 6. Sprint has attractive monthly pricing for higher-capacity iPhones, as well. For example, the 64GB iPhone 6s will cost $5.77 per month and the 128GB iPhone 6s will cost $10.53 per month. Similarly, the 64GB and 128GB iPhone 6s Plus models will cost $9.77 and $14.53 per month, respectively. These prices also require an iPhone 6 trade-in. Sprint isn't leaving out customers with the iPhone 5s. Customers who trade in the 2013-era iPhone can lease the 16GB iPhone 6s or 6s Plus for $10 or $14 per month, respectively.
  • T-Mobile Rolls Out $5 iPhone 6s Lease Payment - T-Mobile said it will drop the Jump On Demand lease payment for the 16GB Apple iPhone 6s to just $5 if customers trade in an iPhone 6. T-Mobile says the out-the-door cost is $0, and the full price of the 16GB iPhone 6s totals $523.99 for customers who remain with T-Mobile for 18 months. By way of comparison, Sprint's iPhone lease program costs $15 per month with a trade-in or $22 without a trade-in. T-Mobile also said it will sell the Apple Watch Sport beginning Friday, Sept. 25, the same day the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus go on sale. T-Mobile is offering the wearable for $0 down and 24 monthly payments of about $14.50 for the 38mm Watch Sport ($349) and $17 for the 42mm Watch Sport ($399).

Microsoft Disables Safedisc DRM On Windows 7/8 - tech
(hx) 02:49 PM CEST - Sep,23 2015 - Post a comment / read (2)
Last month, Microsoft has disabled 2 of the old style DRMs, and subsequently the games that use them, on Windows 10. Games that use Securom and Safedisc no longer work on Windows 10 without a patch of some sort to remove the reliance on these draconian DRMs. This decision was made by Microsoft in response to security concerns, but as a side effect rendered hundreds of old games unplayable on the new operating system without players installing no-CD cracks or re-buying the games via modern digital distribution services which don't use the now-abandoned DRM. Now Microsoft have released a security patch that also removes support for the Safedisc DRM from Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. The description for update '3086255' says that it "addresses a defense-in-depth update for the secdrv.sys driver, a third-party driver." It then explains how it addresses that problem: "The update turns off the service for the secdrv.sys driver. This may affect the ability to run some older games."

FYI, Microsoft has provided a workaround. Those interested in running such games will have to either temporarily turn on the service for the secdrv.sys driver by running certain commands, or by editing the registry.

Dan has been working for Valve on Vulkan since its inception and claimed that there is really not much reason for developers to ever create a DX12 back end for their games, and stated that Vulkan is far superior than in DX12 in various areas.

TechNews - ROG Swift PG348Q Curved Display - tech
(hx) 07:02 PM CEST - Sep,20 2015 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • ROG Swift PG348Q Curved Display Unveiled - At IFA 2015 in Berlin, Germany, upcoming innovations and products such as the ROG Swift PG348Q (video) curved display and the ROG 7.1 surround sound gaming headset were unveiled. People at the event got to see firsthand these exciting products, but if you were not able to be there, don' worry, we won't let you miss out. You may know this gorgeous 34-inch IPS curved display from Computex 2015 in June, but redesigned and now dons the new Plasma Copper and Armor Titanium color scheme to compliment the rest of the latest range of ROG gear. PG348Q has an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio with an incredible 3440 x 1440 resolution, most wide displays only go as far as 16:9 (WQHD - 2560X1440). The curved display combined with the ultra-wide aspect ratio wraps around you to provide an immersive viewing experience like never before. The 100Hz refresh rate with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology deliver smooth and stutter-free gaming, immediately noticeable in FPS and fast action games.
  • ViewSonic VX2475Smhl-4K 24-Inch UHD Monitor Review - At this price point, ViewSonic is bringing Ultra HD to the business class. The monitor is based on a Samsung-manufactured PLS panel with a white LED backlight, 300cd/m2 of peak output and an sRGB color gamut. By the way, that backlight is flicker-free courtesy of its constant-current design. No pulse-width modulation is used here. It's pretty much the same feature set you'd see on most 27-inch QHD displays, which are gradually replacing FHD as the new desktop standard. One thing you'll need to consider with an Ultra HD screen in this size is pixel density. The new 27-inch 5K screens (5120x2880) are highest at 217ppi. But second place goes to the 24-inch (actually 23.6 inches viewable) UHD monitors, which boast 187ppi. That density in this screen size means that without dpi scaling in Windows, text is all but unreadable. We had to up the setting to 150 percent, which rendered everything clearly. That value seems to be a sweet spot for this particular monitor size. Other VX2475Smhl-4K features include a Blue Light Filter that warms up the white point to reduce fatigue, a quick 4ms-rated response time and two HDMI 2.0 inputs that can accept the monitor's native resolution. The spec sheet and price pretty much guarantee the monitor's acceptance in the enterprise, but can it also satisfy gamers?

  • Valve hits a Linux landmark -1,500 games available on Steam - Linux gaming was by no means a new endeavor, but 2013 stands as a major year for the open-source platform's gaming prospects with Valve announcing Linux-based Steam Machines and the arrival of SteamOS. When we looked at the state of Linux gaming after its 12-month Valve anniversary, we found nearly 1,000 professional, commercially distributed games available as of February 2015. But this weekend there's an even bigger numeric milestone to celebrate according to the Linux site Phoronix - 1,500 Linux titles are currently available through Steam.
  • Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10547 - Aside from bug fixes, the newest Windows preview includes updates to the Start menu, improvements to snapping in tablet mode, and local account support with Cortana. Word is: "The default for tile groups on Start is to have 3 columns of medium sized tiles, but we heard feedback from many Insiders who wanted the ability to have a 4th column as well, so they could have two wide or large sized tiles side by side in a group. In this build, you can enable this by going to the Settings app > Personalization > Start and enabling "Show more tiles". And for the Insiders that want more than 512 tiles on Start; we now support up to 2048. Give it a try and let us know what you think."
  • iOS 9 is available to download - Ater nearly three months after it was announced, Apple has officially released iOS 9. One of the biggest improvements iOS 9 has over previous iterations of Apple mobile OS is its ability to multitask. With SplitView and SlideOver, you can access your apps much faster than you could in the past, with the latter of the two allowing two apps to run at the same time. Unfortunately, SplitView is only currently available for the iPad Air 2, but we know the iPad Pro will also support it when it launches later this year. iOS 9 also brings improvements to Siri that offer a smarter way to interact with her. Such features like making specific requests to content based on time and location and Proactive, which optimizes Siri depending on what you're doing, round out some of the ways Apple has improved her. The new OS also features an improved Spotlight search as third-party apps can now be brought up directly within a search. Apple has also improved its Maps app to offer transit directions, includes Loyalty Card support in Apple Pay, and has a new News app. The new OS also makes it possible for the iPad to use a virtual trackpad by placing two fingers on its virtual keyboard. iOS 9 is now available to download and weighs in at 1.2GB, which should make the process of updating your iOS devices less time consuming.
  • Apple Customers Report Crashing After iOS 9 Update - A significant number of Apple Inc customers are reporting their mobile devices have crashed after attempting to upload the new iOS 9 operating system, the latest in a line of launch glitches for the tech giant. Twitter and other social media were awash with disgruntled customers reporting two distinct faults, with one appearing to be linked specifically to older models of Apple iPhones and iPads. Apple's headquarters in San Francisco did not respond to a request for comment late Thursday. An Apple spokesman in Sydney said the company had no comment.
  • Apple doesn't fully fix critical iOS Airdrop vulnerability - Apple has mitigated a critical iOS vulnerability that allows attackers within Bluetooth range of an iPhone to install malicious apps using the Airdrop filesharing feature. Mark Dowd, the security researcher who discovered the bug and privately reported it to Apple, told Ars that the vulnerability has been mitigated in iOS 9, which Apple released Wednesday. But he went on to say that the underlying bug still hasn't been fixed. As he demonstrated in the following video, the bug allows attackers who briefly have physical access to a vulnerable iPhone or who are within Bluetooth range of it, to install an app that the device will trust without prompting the user with a warning dialog.
  • Malware has snuck onto the iOS App Store - Over the past week Chinese developers have discovered and reported on iOS malware; which has since been confirmed by US-based security firm, Palo Alto Networks. The malicious code was able to get into the App Store through a comprised version of Xcode and has subsequently been dubbed XcodeGhost. Xcode is Apple's official developer tool for iOS (and related) apps. The compromised version of Xcode was found hosted on popular Chinese developer websites. It is common in China, and other countries, to download developer tools from non-official sources due to the slower speeds when accessing Apple servers from these locations. The malware was placed within a framework included with this modified version of Xcode; then when a developer would compile their iOS app the malicious framework would be bundled along with it. So far, 39 apps have been found in the App Store which have been compiled using this malicious version of Xcode and subsequently bypassed Apple's strict review process. The infected apps are from a range of categories including banking, maps, stock trading and games. Some of the more popular apps include WeChat (Social Networking) and Didi Chuxing (Chinese Uber equivalent).
  • Apple May Let iPhone Owners Delete Bloatware - Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is considering whether or not to allow customers to remove unwanted apps, such as Stocks or Tips, from their devices. "This is a more complex issue than it first appears," said Cook to BuzzFeed. "There are some apps that are linked to something else on the iPhone. If they were to be removed they might cause issues elsewhere on the phone. There are other apps that aren't like that. So over time, I think with the ones that aren't like that, we'll figure out a way [for you to remove them]." The iPhone has long shipped with a number of apps that cannot be deleted by users, and the list has grown over the years. Apps such as Notes, Reminders, Weather, Podcasts, and Game Center take up valuable space and often go unused. "It's not that we want to suck up your real estate, we're not motivated to do that. We want you to be happy. So I recognize that some people want to do this, and it's something we're looking at." Cook didn't say if or when it might actually make unwanted apps removable.
  • You can crash Google Chrome in 16 characters or less - It's no secret that Chrome has been rising in popularity through the years, and is helped by being installed by default on Android devices. While some complain about memory consumption, most people overlook that for the usability that it provides. As more people use the browser, more bugs are bound to be identified. The latest, identified by Andris Atteka is that Chrome can be made to crash with a simple 16-character URL. The string looks harmless enough, but will cause the browser to stop working.
  • AVG's explains how it can sell users' browsing/search history data - Security firm AVG can sell search and browser history data to advertisers in order to "make money" from its free antivirus software, a change to its privacy policy has confirmed. The updated policy explained that AVG was allowed to collect "non-personal data", which could then be sold to third parties. The new privacy policy comes into effect on 15 October, but AVG explained that the ability to collect search history data had also been included in previous privacy policies, albeit with different wording. Ed.note: they should improve their antivirus as product instead this crap.
  • Bank of America Apps Add Biometric Authentication - Bank of America today updated its Android and iOS apps with biometric security. Consumers who own handsets with fingerprint sensors - such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Apple iPhone 6 - can now use their fingerprint to secure the Bank of America app. In addition to fingerprint login, the BofA app includes a redesigned account overview screen and security center, and a bank-by-appointment feature for setting up in-person meetings. The Bank of America app is free to download via the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
  • Court Says Samsung Phones Should Have Been Banned - An appeals court today said a lower court was wrong to deny Apple's request of an injunction against select Samsung smartphones. In May 2014, a jury awarded Apple $120 million in a case against Samsung concerning patents. Despite the victory, the court did not agree with Apple's wish to ban the offending handsets. The U.S Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the lower court "abused its discretion" by denying the injunction. The appeals court did not detail what steps Apple may take next, nor did it say if the ban should now be put in place. Apple did not immediately offer comment on the decision
  • Facebook Working On 'Dislike' Button - Facebook is preparing to unveil a button that allows users to "dislike" posts, articles, and other content, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this," said Zuckerberg during a live Q&A session. "Today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it." The button won't be for haters; rather, it is meant to help people express empathy. "What [people] really want is an ability to express empathy," continued Zuckerberg. "If you're expressing something sad, it may not feel comfortable to 'like' that post, but your friends and people want to be able to express that they understand." Zuckerberg didn't say when the button may go live.

  • Ahmed Mohamed receives Surface Pro 3, Microsoft Band and more freebies from Microsoft - Earlier this week, Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old, was arrested for allegedly bringing a bomb to school. After arrest and investigation, it was found that Ahmed was simply trying to display his creativity by showing his teacher a homemade digital clock. Unfortunately for him, his teacher felt threatened and decided to make a judgment call. But, in light of the situation, there has been a tremendous outpour of support from social media and important figures. The U.S president invited him to the White House, Mark Zuckerberg invited him to visit the Facebook headquarters, and Hillary Clinton tweeted support for him. Now it appears that Microsoft has also extended its support to Ahmed by sending him a mountain of tech goodies. Hes a lucky kid! Such good gear and well done to M$ for showing support to this kid. I hope he builds better stuff in the future! :) (FYI, back in 1983-1984 I built many electronic gadgets from scratch ...parents thought I'm crazy lol. TechNews - New iPhones, iPads, Apple TV - tech
(hx) 04:21 PM CEST - Sep,12 2015 - Post a comment / read (3)
There was of course one overriding theme this week: Apple's Sept. 9 press event, where it unveiled new iPhones, the iPad Pro, and a fourth-generation Apple TV.  Lets see if any one going to shell out $ 750 (iPhone 6S) - $ 1100 for a mobile phone that is getting outdated every year! I also find the iPad pro to be a major disappointment. Rather than follow the cues that Microsoft set, Apple is stubbornly stuck in the mobile OS mindset. No storage expansion slots. No USB port of any kind (USB -C would that be too much to ask?) Ability to add external monitors and docking stations. The Apple Pencil stylus has no buttons, no clip or other way to hold/store it when not in use, is excessively long, and costs an extra $99 (wtf price!). The integrated battery can be recharged via Lightning connector, but I've seen reports that it dies quickly and therefore needs frequent charging. How can any of us take this attempt at competing with the Microsoft Surface seriously? Also why Apple so slow doing something? Despite having butt load amount of money, one begin to wonder if all the money Apple have is used for marketing and lawyers...
  • Apple Drops Prices of Last Year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus - Apple has changed up its pricing mix for existing iPhones. The iPhone 5s drops to free with a two-year contract, while the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will cost $99 and $199 with a two-year contract, respectively. The new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will cost $199 and $299 with contracts, respectively. Monthly prices for financed iPhones will vary by carrier.
  • iOS 9 will be available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch September - An official announcement of new iPhones usually means a release date for the latest version of Cupertino's mobile operating system as well. Today was no different as Apple announced that iOS 9 would be available as a free download September 16th. When it arrives next week, you'll be privy to new features like a new and improved Siri, system-level security settings and split-screen multitasking on the iPad (hello, iPad Pro). Native apps like Maps (now with transit info), Notes and others have also been refreshed, so if you haven't been adventurous enough to test drive the public beta, there will be a load of new stuff for you to try. And there's that brand new News app too, serving up personalized content to your devices for reading on the go.  FYI, Apple today released the final developer builds of iOS 9, WatchOS 2.0, OS X 10.11, and Xcode 7. Developers can use these penultimate versions of the new operating systems to test the compatibility of their apps. Apple will deliver the final, consimer versions of iOS 9 and WatchOS 2.0 on Sept. 16. OS X 10.11 El Capitan will follow on Sept. 30.
  • Apple Targets Business Users with iPad Pro - Apple today announced a new, larger tablet called the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro boasts a 12.9-inch screen with 2,723 by 2,048 resolution, totaling 5.2 million pixels. The display has a variable refresh rate in order to help save power. It supports a full-sized software keyboard, or, when in GarageBand, a larger piano keyboard. The iPad Pro is powered by the A9x processor, which is 1.8 times faster than the A8x it replaces, while also doubling the graphics performance. The tablet offers 10 hours of battery life. For the first time, the iPad Pro has four speakers with stereo sound and will balance the sound depending on how the device is being held. It puts out three times the audio volume of the iPad Air 2. The tablet is 6.9mm thick. Other features include an 8-megapixel iSight camera and an HD video user-facing camera. It will come in 802.11ac and LTE variants. It supports Apple is offering a new accessory for the iPad Pro, a cover that flips open to become a real keyboard similar to that of the Microsoft Surface Pro. The cover's keys use the same technology found in Apple's latest MacBook. A set of magnetic poles connect the keyboard to the iPad Pro, which also transfer data and turn off the software keyboard. Another accessory, the Apple Pencil, acts as a stylus for apps that require a finer point. The Pencil and iPad Pro work together to recognize light and harder presses. Apple claims low latency makes the Pencil feel like a "true writing instrument." The Pencil is battery powered and can charge via the iPad Pro's Lightning port. Pricing for the iPad Pro starts at $799 for a 32GB model with WiFi. The Apple Pencil costs $99, and the Smart Keyboard costs $169. All three reach stores in November.
  • Apple Brings Innovation Back to Television with The All-New Apple TV - Apple sent out a press release announcing a new set-top box for televisions that brings applications to living room. The revised Apple TV features powerful hardware, a modernized operating system with a new user experience, weighty developer tools, and a complete App Store. To start, the new Apple TV relies on voice and touch to control it. The remote has a glass touch surface for navigating through menus as well as secondary buttons for making selections. The Siri button allows users to make voice requests or perform searches for specific shows or movies. Siri's powers are extensive and can answer questions, switch apps, or control playback with a quick command. The Apple TV is smart enough to offer content from third-party providers, too, such as Netflix and Hulu. The platform is called tvOS and Apple says it will allow developers to use its standard tools to create apps that will run on Apple TV and television sets. The remote can act as a game controller, but so too can existing iPhones and iPods Touch. The Apple TV will cost $149 for 32GB and $199 for 64GB. It will ship in October. Developers can download the associated tvOS SDK and APIs today.
  • Microsoft rolling out new cumulative update for Windows 10 - The latest update KB3081455 is said to contain various fixes and improvements as with all updates but nothing specific about it is known, as Microsoft has decided to not provide detailed changelogs for all updates, only significant ones. • Google takes action against ad injectors after 300K complaints - According to a new blog post, Google has decided to fight unwanted and potentially malicious ads that appear on legitimate websites. After receiving nearly 300,000 complaints from users of its Chrome web browser, Google is adding automated filters to DoubleClick Bid Manager to create blacklists. Google owns the DoubleClick technology used by advertisers to manage digital ad campaigns on behalf of websites. Google gives the example of The New York Times, whose website was showing ads the publisher didn't know about. Ad injectors were hijacking legitimate ads and replacing the ones that were originally intended to run on the website. The unwanted ads sometimes contain malicious code presented through Chrome. If the user clicked the wrong button, they could run harmful code. The result of Google's action is a blacklisting of 1.4% of the ad inventory managed through DoubleClick Bid Manager. But the company found that the percentage of injected ads varied wildly across different ad exchanges, with one having over 15% of its ads blocked by Google's new filter.
  • Team manages to crack more than 11 million Ashley Madison passwords - The ease of cracking these passwords shows how important it is not to use the same password for more than one service, which prevents attackers from cracking username/password combinations and using them to unlock other accounts.
  • Data breach exposes 10M health records - New York insurance provider Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recently revealed that hackers infiltrated their computer systems and those belonging to some of its affiliates. The breach put more than 10 million members' personal information at risk. Excellus said it first became aware of the incident on August 5 at which time it notified the FBI and reached out to FireEye's Mandiant incident response division to conduct an assessment of its IT systems. Attackers may have had access to sensitive information including names, birth dates, addresses, Social Security numbers, mailing addresses, phone numbers, member identification numbers, financial account information and claims information. The insurer said it has begun the process of notifying affected individuals. What's more, Excellus will provide those at risk with two years of free identity theft protection services via Kroll and credit monitoring via TransUnion.

  • ZTE Mobley Hotspot Plugs Into Car Data Port - AT&T today announced the ZTE Mobley, a mobile hotspot for cars that connects via the OBD-II port. The Mobley is compatible with most cars model year 1996 and later and turns on automatically whenever the car is on. It can support up to five connected devices in the car via WiFi. The Mobley costs $100 with no commitment, and is also available for $0 down with a two-year commitment. AT&T says it can be added to Mobile Share Value plans for a $10 monthly access charge. Data Connect plans are available, too, which cost $20 for 1GB of LTE 4G data or $30 for 3GB. The Mobley is a simple hotspot and doesn't offer advanced support functions, such as roadside assistance, like those available via the Verizon Hum
  • Sprint's iPhone 6s Includes Carrier Aggregation - Sprint has shared details about its iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch plans and price points. To start, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will both support carrier aggregation on Sprint's 2.5GHz spectrum (Band 41). Sprint claims cell sites with two-channel 2.5GHz carrier aggregation can deliver peak speeds of 100Mbps. The new iPhones will also include WiFi Calling, a feature already available to some older iPhone models. Sprint is offering the new handsets via its iPhone Forever program. New and existing customers who turn in an old smartphone will be able to lease the 16GB iPhone 6s for $15 per month - a price that undercuts T-Mobile's lease program by $5 and Apple's lease program by $17. Existing Sprint customers who already use the iPhone Forever program (with a 16GB iPhone 6) will be able to keep their $15 monthly payment if they upgrade to the 16GB iPhone 6s by Dec. 31. Sprint is offering to pay the ETFs of customers who switch from other carriers. Last, Sprint said it will open stores at 8am on Sept. 25, the day the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus go on sale, but it will also allow customers who prefer to avoid crowds to take advantage of Direct 2 You.
  • Samsung to cut nearly 10,000 of its HQ staff  - Samsung is preparing to cut 10% of its staff at the company's main headquarters in Suwon, South Korea, according to a local newspaper. The move comes as Samsung's smartphones continue to underperform, resulting in five straight monthly declines in sales and $44 billion being wiped off the company's market value since April. Samsung is said to be targeting almost 10,000 employees in the HQ's human resources, public relations, and finance departments, according to the Korea Economic Daily. The paper added the company also plans to cut some expenses next year. Samsung recently dropped the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge after the devices didn't attract the sales that were previously expected. The company's stock raised 1.7 percent in Seoul after news of the cuts was released
  • Google will soon be delivering fresh food in two US cities - Google will begin delivering fresh food and groceries in two U.S. cities later this year, Bloomberg reports. Google Express, which has been delivering merchandise such as dry foods for a while, will partner with Whole Foods Market and Costco to add fruit and vegetables, and more, to their delivery selection. The trial begins in San Francisco and another city that wasn't named in the interview. With this move, Google Express steps into direct competition with other online food deliverers such as Amazon Fresh and Instacart. And, looking at the numbers in the Bloomberg report, it makes sense that they're doing this. Online groceries have become a $10.9 billion industry in the U.S., and it's expected to grow 9.6 percent each year through 2019.

What this basically means is that this new technique will bring us closed to realistic dynamic skin, and more believable characters.

TechNews - Windows 10 Threshold 2 in November - tech
(hx) 12:28 AM CEST - Sep,07 2015 - Post a comment
  • Windows 10 Threshold 2 rumored to launch in November - The update was previously scheduled for an October release date, but now this may have shifted to a later date, possibly in November. Keeping in mind that this gives Microsoft more time to work on optimization and other new features, the news isn't all that bad. Another interesting thing revealed is that Threshold 2 is internally being called "Windows 10 Update for November" or "Windows 10 November Update" but whether any of this name ends up being final is not confirmed, as of yet. Another possibility would be Microsoft not giving the update a specific name but releasing it as a general update. Windows Insiders have been using Threshold 2 builds for quite some time now and we know that the update will largely work on optimization, but will also tow along some new features such as extensions for Microsoft Edge, and possibly a universal Messaging app for the desktop.
  • Intel: Criminals getting better at data exfiltration - Enterprises tend to be highly focused on keeping attackers out of their systems, but most of the actual damage happens not when the bad guys first break in, but when they're able to successfully steal data -- and the techniques they're using to do this are getting steadily more sophisticated. One of the ways that attackers evade detection is to disguize the data before sending it out, according to a new report from Intel Security. For example, if a company's employees post pictures to Twitter, attackers can embed data into images so that the image still looks normal to the human eye, and attach the image to an otherwise harmless-sounding Twitter post. Gmail can also be used to smuggle data out, especially when the traffic is encrypted, he added. Another way attackers are using to hide their behavior is to leverage processors not normally monitored for suspicious activity -- like graphics processors.

Skype 6.0 for the iPhone and iPad has also been given a visual overhaul, which includes new swiping gestures to make calls and answer messages. Skype improved contact search for the iPhone/iPad app, as well. Last the iPad version of Skype now has all the features found on the iPhone version, including the new messaging function, large emoticons, and group chats. Skype 6.0 for Android and for iOS is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store, respectively.
  • Chrome 45 brings faster performance - n Chrome 45, Google has implemented a new garbage collection system that attempts to clean up unused memory in idle tabs. This new system reduces RAM usage by around 10% on average, but Google saw even greater reductions (up to 25%) in complex web apps such as Gmail. Google also wants to make opening Chrome a much faster experience, and they're achieving this by prioritizing the restoration of your most recently viewed tabs after you launch the browser. Only users who have set their browser to "continue where you left off" will see these improvements, but it should make the process of returning to browsing much faster.

Amazon is offering an unknown percentage of its video library for offline playback, including televisions shows, classic movies, and newer cinematic releases. Not all videos are available for download/offline playback; compatible videos will be marked as such. Prime subscribers can download the video file via WiFi and will have between 15 to 30 days to watch the video (varies by title) before the viewing period ends. Offline viewing is only available to residents of the U.S.
  • The next iPhone could arrive with 3D Touch Display - According to 9to5Mac, the "Force Touch" display will be officially dubbed a "3D Touch Display". The "3D Touch Display" moniker will come from the three dimensions of pressure the new iPhone display will respond to. While users of the Apple Watch and MacBook will be familiar with two levels of pressure, the new display will offer a third level of sensitivity that will be unique to the iPhone. Naturally, this will offer a new dynamic to the iPhones interface which should be integrated fairly well into iOS 9. For event coverage, be sure to check back on September 9th, as we will be covering all the latest from Apple's September event.
  • Sony Reveals the Xperia Z5 In Small and Large Sizes with 4K Display - Sony has announced the Xperia Z5, its flagship smartphone, which features a 4k display. The handset relies on the same slim metal design from pervious generations of Xperia Z devices with glass on the front and back surfaces. The phone is waterproof and protects the handset from accidental spills. The Xperia Z5 features what Sony says is "the best camera" it has ever put in a phone by speeding up autofocus to 0.03 seconds, while also improving the pixel count to 23 million. The camera features Sony's G-Lens and uses "clear image zoom" to power 5x zooming with no loss in clarity. The camera also performs well at night and in low light thanks to a new night capture mode powered by the XMOR sensor. Last, video includes steady shot intelligent shake reduction. Sony added a fingerprint sensor to the screen lock button, which is positioned on the right edge. The phone will be offered in a 4.7-inch screen size with all the same features. The Z5 Premium has a 5.5-inch 4K display (with upscaling for full HD content). Sony didn't immediate say when the Z5 Premium and Z5 Compact will go on sale. Both handsets run Android.

NVIDIA Will Implement Async Compute Via Driver - tech
(hx) 09:54 PM CEST - Sep,05 2015 - Post a comment / read (3)
Well, here is some good news for NVIDIA users. It appears that NVIDIA will fully implement Async Compute via an upcoming driver:
Regarding batches, we use the term batches just because we are counting both draw calls and dispatch calls. Dispatch calls are compute shaders, draw calls are normal graphics shaders. Though sometimes everyone calls dispatchs draw calls, they are different so we thought we'd avoid the confusion by calling everything a draw call.

Regarding CPU load balancing on D3D12, that's entirely the applications responsibility. So if you see a case where it’s not load balancing, it’s probably the application not the driver/API. We’ve done some additional tunes to the engine even in the last month and can clearly see usage cases where we can load 8 cores at maybe 90-95% load. Getting to 90% on an 8 core machine makes us really happy. Keeping our application tuned to scale like this definitely on ongoing effort.

Additionally, hitches and stalls are largely the applications responsibility under D3D12. In D3D12, essentially everything that could cause a stall has been removed from the API. For example, the pipeline objects are designed such that the dreaded shader recompiles won’t ever have to happen. We also have precise control over how long a graphics command is queued up. This is pretty important for VR applications.

Also keep in mind that the memory model for D3d12 is completely different the D3D11, at an OS level. I’m not sure if you can honestly compare things like memory load against each other. In D3D12 we have more control over residency and we may, for example, intentionally keep something unused resident so that there is no chance of a micro-stutter if that resource is needed. There is no reliable way to do this in D3D11. Thus, comparing memory residency between the two APIS may not be meaningful, at least not until everyone's had a chance to really tune things for the new paradigm.

Regarding SLI and cross fire situations, yes support is coming. However, those options in the ini file probablly do not do what you think they do, just FYI. Some posters here have been remarkably perceptive on different multi-GPU modes that are coming, and let me just say that we are looking beyond just the standard Crossfire and SLI configurations of today. We think that Multi-GPU situations are an area where D3D12 will really shine. (once we get all the kinks ironed out, of course). I can't promise when this support will be unvieled, but we are commited to doing it right.

Regarding Async compute, a couple of points on this. FIrst, though we are the first D3D12 title, I wouldn't hold us up as the prime example of this feature. There are probably better demonstrations of it. This is a pretty complex topic and to fully understand it will require significant understanding of the particular GPU in question that only an IHV can provide. I certainly wouldn't hold Ashes up as the premier example of this feature.

We actually just chatted with Nvidia about Async Compute, indeed the driver hasn't fully implemented it yet, but it appeared like it was. We are working closely with them as they fully implement Async Compute. We'll keep everyone posted as we learn more.

Also, we are pleased that D3D12 support on Ashes should be functional on Intel hardware relatively soon, (actually, it's functional now it's just a matter of getting the right driver out to the public).

Thanks!

The PC version of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is said to be stunning in 4K Ultra HD. Over the weekend, Konami announced that The Phantom Pain would be available to install on Steam from 12.00am EST, September 1. You can download the 64-bit driver for Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 here and the Windows 10 version here.
Oxide Developer: NVIDIA Was Putting Pressure On Us - tech
(hx) 05:40 PM CEST - Aug,31 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to one of Oxide's developer, NVIDIA was pressuring Oxide to remove certain settings in its benchmark. Oxide refused to do so, which basically led to NVIDIA's statement regarding Ashes of the Singularity.
Wow, there are lots of posts here, so I'll only respond to the last one. The interest in this subject is higher then we thought. The primary evolution of the benchmark is for our own internal testing, so it's pretty important that it be representative of the gameplay. To keep things clean, I'm not going to make very many comments on the concept of bias and fairness, as it can completely go down a rat hole.

Certainly I could see how one might see that we are working closer with one hardware vendor then the other, but the numbers don't really bare that out. Since we've started, I think we've had about 3 site visits from NVidia, 3 from AMD, and 2 from Intel ( and 0 from Microsoft, but they never come visit anyone ;(). Nvidia was actually a far more active collaborator over the summer then AMD was, If you judged from email traffic and code-checkins, you'd draw the conclusion we were working closer with Nvidia rather than AMD wink.gif As you've pointed out, there does exist a marketing agreement between Stardock (our publisher) for Ashes with AMD. But this is typical of almost every major PC game I've ever worked on (Civ 5 had a marketing agreement with NVidia, for example). Without getting into the specifics, I believe the primary goal of AMD is to promote D3D12 titles as they have also lined up a few other D3D12 games.

If you use this metric, however, given Nvidia's promotions with Unreal (and integration with Gameworks) you'd have to say that every Unreal game is biased, not to mention virtually every game that's commonly used as a benchmark since most of them have a promotion agreement with someone. Certainly, one might argue that Unreal being an engine with many titles should give it particular weight, and I wouldn't disagree. However, Ashes is not the only game being developed with Nitrous. It is also being used in several additional titles right now, the only announced one being the Star Control reboot. (Which I am super excited about! But that's a completely other topic wink.gif).

Personally, I think one could just as easily make the claim that we were biased toward Nvidia as the only 'vendor' specific code is for Nvidia where we had to shutdown async compute. By vendor specific, I mean a case where we look at the Vendor ID and make changes to our rendering path. Curiously, their driver reported this feature was functional but attempting to use it was an unmitigated disaster in terms of performance and conformance so we shut it down on their hardware. As far as I know, Maxwell doesn't really have Async Compute so I don't know why their driver was trying to expose that. The only other thing that is different between them is that Nvidia does fall into Tier 2 class binding hardware instead of Tier 3 like AMD which requires a little bit more CPU overhead in D3D12, but I don't think it ended up being very significant. This isn't a vendor specific path, as it's responding to capabilities the driver reports.

From our perspective, one of the surprising things about the results is just how good Nvidia's DX11 perf is. But that's a very recent development, with huge CPU perf improvements over the last month. Still, DX12 CPU overhead is still far far better on Nvidia, and we haven't even tuned it as much as DX11. The other surprise is that of the min frame times having the 290X beat out the 980 Ti (as reported on Ars Techinica). Unlike DX11, minimum frame times are mostly an application controlled feature so I was expecting it to be close to identical. This would appear to be GPU side variance, rather then software variance. We'll have to dig into this one.

I suspect that one thing that is helping AMD on GPU performance is D3D12 exposes Async Compute, which D3D11 did not. Ashes uses a modest amount of it, which gave us a noticeable perf improvement. It was mostly opportunistic where we just took a few compute tasks we were already doing and made them asynchronous, Ashes really isn't a poster-child for advanced GCN features.

Our use of Async Compute, however, pales with comparisons to some of the things which the console guys are starting to do. Most of those haven't made their way to the PC yet, but I've heard of developers getting 30% GPU performance by using Async Compute. Too early to tell, of course, but it could end being pretty disruptive in a year or so as these GCN built and optimized engines start coming to the PC. I don't think Unreal titles will show this very much though, so likely we'll have to wait to see. Has anyone profiled Ark yet?

In the end, I think everyone has to give AMD alot of credit for not objecting to our collaborative effort with Nvidia even though the game had a marketing deal with them. They never once complained about it, and it certainly would have been within their right to do so. (Complain, anyway, we would have still done it, wink.gif)

P.S. There is no war of words between us and Nvidia. Nvidia made some incorrect statements, and at this point they will not dispute our position if you ask their PR. That is, they are not disputing anything in our blog. I believe the initial confusion was because Nvidia PR was putting pressure on us to disable certain settings in the benchmark, when we refused, I think they took it a little too personally.

  • Origin EON-17X gaming notebook impressions - Should you buy a Mobile G-Sync equipped laptop? Taking nothing else into consideration, absolutely. In fact, I would pay a (reasonable) premium for it. Of course, the archetypal G-Sync laptop is currently a chunky, battery-sucking gaming machine. If you're looking for a high-end gaming desktop replacement, then there are a few solid options out there (e.g. Origin EON17-X, Gigabyte Aorus, Asus G751). However, if you're in the market for a more mainstream laptop -- something with more than 2 hours of battery life and under 5 pounds -- then you'll have to wait until Mobile G-Sync spreads to a wider variety of laptops.
  • Microsoft will finally allow you to defer app updates on Windows 10 - Despite the mostly positive reception to Windows 10, Microsoft has received some flak recently for its policies regarding updates. In a bid to keep users' systems secure and always up-to-date, the company had made not only updates to the OS mandatory for Home users, but also those for Windows Store apps. With update KB3081448 (pushed yesterday), however, Microsoft has gone back on its insistence, it seems. While this option was previously unavailable and greyed out for Windows 10 Home users, users are reporting that after KB3081448, that is no longer the case. Of course, unlike mandatory hotfixes and driver updates - which, if buggy, could brick your device - automatic updates for apps are unlikely to have any device-threatening drawbacks. Still, opting to give users the choice, especially in the case of those who might be on metered connections, is certainly a step in the right direction for Microsoft.

  • Google to Trim Android Bloatware a Bit - Android device owners will soon see fewer Google-branded apps on their smartphones. The company has altered its requirements and phone makers will no longer be forced to stick Google+, Play Games, Newsstand, and Play Books on their smartphones, according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal. The change comes in response to an investigation the European Commission is conducting into Google's potential monopolistic business practices. Google has long required handset makers to include a series of core apps, such as Gmail, Google Maps, Calendar, and the Play Store. The list of these required apps has grown over the years. Unwanted apps - especially those that cannot be deleted - are often referred to as bloatware. The EU saw the presence of these unwanted and unremovable apps as unfair competition to third-party apps that do the same (or similar) thing. Google has not commented on the matter in any official way. The news was first reported by Android Central.

  • Microsoft Releases Cortana for Android in Beta Form - Microsoft has made its Cortana voice-activated personal assistant available to Android users via the Google Play Store beta channel. The app had previously only been available through a closed beta, but is now accessible through an open beta program. Cortana for Android can be used to track flights and other calendar appointments, set reminders and alarms, and monitor packages. Cortana can also supplant Google Now on Android handsets if users so wish. Cortana beta testers can set Cortana to launch with a long press of the home button, which makes it easier to use Cortana on Android phones. Cortana testers will still be able to interact with and launch Google Now on their handsets via other actions. Cortana for Android is free to download from Microsoft's beta site in the Google Play Store. Microsoft is still working to bring Cortana to iOS devices.
  • Samsung Kicks Off Beta Testing for Samsung Pay - Samsung is inviting a select number of people to beta test Samsung Pay in the U.S. In order to trial the mobile payment platform, consumers need to have a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, or Note 5 smartphone. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular are supporting Samsung Pay at launch, Verizon Wireless is not. The beta requires users to have an active Samsung account and a MasterCard or Visa credit/debit card from Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, U.S. Trust, or U.S. Bank. Samsung Pay uses both NFC and MST for tap-and-go transactions. Apple Pay and Android Pay, in comparison, use only NFC. Consumers can request an invite to test Samsung Pay from Samsung.com.

  • Netflix won't renew Epix deal, losing several blockbuster movies - Netflix has announced it won't renew a content-licensing deal with Epix, which will result in several blockbuster movies leaving the streaming service's catalog after September. In a post on the company's official blog, Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, said Netflix won't renew the deal because it wants to focus on exclusive content. Netflix entered into its agreement with Epix in 2010, though Epix reached a similar deal with rival Amazon Instant Video just two years later. As a result, movies from Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount - the joint partners behind Epix - appear on both streaming services at about the same time. The expiration of its Epix deal means Netflix will lose high-profile movies such as "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "World War Z" at the end of September.
