Gamers have hyperconnected neural networks - tech
(hx) 06:56 PM CET - Dec,28 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
Brain scans from nearly 200 adolescent boys provide evidence that the brains of compulsive video game players are wired differently. Chronic video game play is associated with hyperconnectivity between several pairs of brain networks. Some of the changes are predicted to help game players respond to new information.

Other changes are associated with distractibility and poor impulse control. The research, a collaboration between the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Chung-Ang University in South Korea, was published online in Addiction Biology on Dec. 22, 2015.

Those with Internet gaming disorder are obsessed with video games, often to the extent that they give up eating and sleeping to play. This study reports that in adolescent boys with the disorder, certain brain networks that process vision or hearing are more likely to have enhanced coordination to the so-called salience network. The job of the salience network is to focus attention on important events, poising that person to take action. In a video game, enhanced coordination could help a gamer to react more quickly to the rush of an oncoming fighter. And in life, to a ball darting in front of a car, or an unfamiliar voice in a crowded room.

TechNews - Android 6.0 Marshmallow beta - tech
(hx) 01:30 AM CET - Dec,24 2015 - Post a comment
  • Researchers develop ultra-fast light-based microprocessor - Researchers have for the first time successfully demonstrated a microprocessor that uses optical connections instead of traditional electrical wires to transmit data.
  • The Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 - Ryan and the crew at PC Perspective just published a review of the Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 for those of you interested.
  • Samsung releases Android 6.0 Marshmallow beta for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge  - Samsung is giving every consumer a chance to participate, though it will be accepting requests of its own accord. Once accepted, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge owners can download Android 6.0 on their device over the air and then provide feedback to the Korean manufacturer that will help make the final version of Marshmallow better. Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge brings most of the expected features, such as Google's Now on Tap feature and the new per-app permissions system. Also included in the test update are new pro options in the camera, an option to disable fast battery charging, and numerous interface changes. New animations are reportedly on-board, and Samsung has also changed the color theme of the interface here and there.
  • Microsoft's Lumia 435 available for $29.99 off-contract - The Lumia 435 is Microsoft's entry-level smartphone, and you can usually pick it up from Best Buy for $49.99, with no-contract but locked to T-Mobile. Exactly the same device (white, off-contract, locked to T-Mo) costs $70 via the Microsoft Store - but you can currently pick it up for just $29.99 at Best Buy. The impressive Lumia 640 is also available via the same retailer for a bit less than its regular price. The 4G LTE handset costs $59.99 via the Microsoft Store with no contract, but locked to AT&T; over at Best Buy, you can buy it now for $49.99 (only available in black). Both handsets are available with free shipping - although it's unlikely that that option will get the devices to you in time for Christmas.
  • Google tests one-touch phone logins to replace passwords - The search giant has begun a limited test of a security feature that allows user to login simply by clicking "yes" on a notification sent to his phone. If this rings a little familiar, it's because it's akin to what Yahoo is doing with its Account Key service. This is a sort of one-factor authentication method, relying solely on something you own, and dropping the "something you know" aspect of two-factor authentication. Occasionally, users may be asked for their password if Google thinks something's a little funny. If the phone is lost or misplaced, users can log in from another device and deauthorize the lost one. According to TechCrunch, a Reddit user named Rohit Paul was recently sent an invitation to join a group whose users can try out the new authentication method. Google hasn't announced whether this feature will be made available to the general public yet.
  • Facebook to Support iPhone's Live Photos - The Facebook iOS application now lets users upload, share, and view Live Photos captured with the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus. Live Photos debuted with the newest iPhones from Apple earlier this year. Similar to HTC's Zoes, iOS Live Photos combine video and images to create a moving, living montage. At launch, Live Photos could be shared across Apple's phones, tablets, and PCs, but not third-party platforms. The latest version of the Facebook iOS app adds support for Live Photos. Live Photos can only be viewed by other devices running iOS 9. The feature is being pushed to a small number of users initially, with a broader rollout planned for 2016.

TechNews - Netflix launches Universal app - tech
(hx) 11:51 PM CET - Dec,19 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Netflix launches Universal app for Windows 10 PCs and tablets  - As part of its announcement that it has received over 2.5 billion visits to the Windows Store, Microsoft has revealed that a new Netflix Universal app is now available for Windows 10 PCs and tablets. The Netflix Universal app introduces an enhanced interface that is optimized for various screen orientations, resolutions and sizes. As shown in the screenshot above, the new app also includes a visually rich presentation where artwork, instead of titles, represent the content displayed within the interface. The navigation experience has also improved when compared with previous versions of the Netflix app and can adapt based on the type of input (e.g., mouse or touch) that is used to access it. As with most Universal apps already available for Windows 10, the new Netflix Universal app also integrates with Cortana. Users can launch the app with their voice (e.g., "Cortana, launch Netflix") and can also search for content by speaking commands (e.g., "Netflix, search for 'House of Cards'") even when the Netflix app is not active. It also supports different phrases for the same search operations.
  • Project Fi Now Supports Data-Only Devices - Google today said Project Fi subscribers can add a tablet or other data-only device to their plan if they choose. Customers will need to order a data-only SIM card from Google through the Project Fi web site. Google charges $10 per 1GB of data, but only bills customers for what they actually use each month. The offer is available only to existing Project Fi subscribers. Tablets cannot be used as mobile hotspots. The initial batch of tablets compatible with the service include the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9, iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4, and the Galaxy Tab S. Project Fi uses a mix of cellular service from Sprint and T-Mobile, and WiFi to provide coverage. Devices that run on Project Fi can dynamically switch to the strongest network to optimize performance.
  • Samsung introduces a 128GB Galaxy Note 5 version in South Korea - Samsung has finally introduced a 128GB version of the Galaxy Note 5, dubbed the Winter Edition. Sadly, the new 128GB version Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition is only being offered in Samsung's home country of South Korea. The phablet goes on sale in the country today and is available in two color options - Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium. It has been priced at 999,900 KRW, which actually happens to be the special introductory price. Samsung hasn't revealed any plans of launching the 128GB version Galaxy Note 5 in markets outside South Korea yet, so most likely the company may not have any such plans at all. As far as rest of the specs go, the new Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition is identical to the 32GB and 64GB Galaxy Note 5 currently being sold in markets around the world.
  • Pebble Watches Gain Fitness Tracker App - Pebble today updated its smartwatches with new system software. Pebble OS 3.8 bestows the Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Time Round with a fitness and activity tracking application. With Pebble Health, smartwatch owners can monitor their sleep and track steps. The app delivers a sleep report upon waking and a step report at the end of the day. It collects information over time and displays it in graph form to help people spot trends. The app is compatible with Google Fit and Apple HealthKit. Pebble is also pushing Pebble OS 3.8 to the older Pebble Classic and Pebble Steel watches. These devices gain the timeline user interface that ships with the newest watches from Pebble, although the older watches do not have access to Pebble Health. The refreshed system software also adds universal search, improvements to music control and Facebook Messenger notifications, and bug fixes. Pebble owners can update their wearable through the associated Android and iOS apps.
  • Microsoft Says Older Phones Won't Get Windows 10 Until 2016 - Microsoft has said owners of handsets running Windows Phone 8 / 8.1 will have to wait a bit longer to receive Windows 10. The update was originally expected to arrive this month, but Microsoft has now delayed the rollout. "This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones." Microsoft has not defined exactly which devices will receive the update, nor did it provide any explanation for delaying the Windows 10 update. In other Microsoft news, the company released a new Technical Preview for Windows Insiders today. Build 10586.36 further refines performance of the platform.
  • Google Now On Tap Understands More Languages - Google is rolling out an update to its Now On Tap tool in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. First, the app gains support for French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Korean. Google says more languages will be added soon. Now On Tap also makes it possible to search for flight status from within text messages, check package tracking from within emails, and call up more details about people, places, or things when reading news articles. Last, a new sharing tool lets people take and share screenshots with others. Google said these features will arrive over the coming days. Now On Tap is only available to devices running Android 6.
  • Sony Hoping to Boost Battery Capacity By 40% - Sony is looking at sulfur to help improve the performance of rechargeable batteries. Sony says using sulfur as an electrode material can increase the energy density from today's limit of 700Wh/L to 1,000Wh/L. This boost would give a lithium-sulfur battery 40% more capacity when compared to a lithium-ion battery of the same volume. Sony would use sulfur for the positive electrode and lithium for the negative electrode. Sulfur has low voltage, but much greater capacity potential. The company is also investigating magnesium-sulfur batteries. Sony hopes to commercialize the Li-S batteries in smartphones by 2020.
  • Turn your phone into a Jedi weapon with Lightsaber Escape - Lucasfilm and Google have collaborated to make a Star Wars browser game: Lightsaber Escape. While that may sound like a simple enough diversion, this game adds a layer of immersion by turning your phone into your Jedi-approved weapon. The most impressive part of this game may be just how easy it is to get into the action. (hx) 04:16 PM CET - Dec,18 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
There's a new version of AMD's Radeon Software Crimson Edition available to download, version 15.12. It brings with it a bunch of fixes, but perhaps just as importantly, it's a sign that AMD is committed to following through with its promise to deliver more frequent driver updates. As with previous versions, this driver isn't intended for AMD products running in Apple Boot Camp. To install it, you'll need Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later.
Here's a list of the resolved issues, click the link for the longer list of known issues:

AMD Announces GPUOpen - tech
(hx) 10:06 PM CET - Dec,15 2015 - Post a comment
AMD has announced GPUOpen - its answer to NVIDIA's GameWorks. In a nutshell, AMD is releasing a slew of open-source software and tools to give developers of games, heterogeneous applications, and HPC applications deeper access to the GPU and GPU resources. GPUOpen will be published in January 2016, and AMD will use the permissive MIT license, allowing GPUOpen code to be used without any real restriction in all kinds of applications. The code will be published on GitHub. Making GPUOpen open source should make AMD’s library more appealing to developers. The likes of TressFX and GameWorks are restricted (not open source), which often forces developers to optimize their games for one brand of GPUs more than the other. AMD is hoping to kill this hassle, and allow developers to use their open source library to optimize their games for both set of GPUs.

While this may seem like AMD yielding to its more influential counter-part, in reality it's the developers who are the winners with this move. Nvidia's GameWorks library is constantly being updated, and it so often happens that the codes developers are debugging will run differently on end-user systems because their code has quickly become obsolete. GPUOpen attempts to slay this issue and give total control to developers, who won't need to integrate multiple libraries, nor leave either one of the GPU vendors at a performance/visual disadvantage. GPUOpen will also contain a set of SDKs such as a AMD's FireRender engine, ray tracing SDK, and its RapidFire cloud SDK. It will also include the AMD CodeXL debuggers and performance profiler.

TechNews - GDDR6 for Launch in 2016 - tech
(hx) 08:42 AM CET - Dec,13 2015 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • AMD Discusses 2016 Radeon Visual Technologies Roadmap - Yeah, their roadmap is looking impressive....
  • GDDR6 in Development for Launch in 2016 - If GDDR6 is the new name, or if it comes out as GDDR5X first and then GDDR6, higher capacities, clocks, and lower voltages are likely. However, HBM 2.0 in capacities as low as 2GB is supposed to arrive in 2016 as well, and its bandwidth potential is ideal for high-end cards. Current mid-range cards don't exactly need higher bandwidth offered by GDDR5X/GDDR6, since the current bandwidth of GDDR5 is more than enough. So if GDDR5X/GDDR6 is aimed at competing wth HBM 2.0, well, it may be in a losing battle. Some improvements for mid-range would be nice, but not really needed. Laptops and tablets may see a boost with GDDR5X/GDDR6, at least until they start coming with HBM 2.0. Either way, we'll just have to wait and see what happens with GDDR5X/GDDR6 in the new year.
  • First Xiaomi notebook rumored to pack Intel Core i7 CPU and GTX 760M GPU - According to Chinese sources, the Mi branded notebook will be an ODM device manufactured by Inventec. As far as the specs go, the notebook is expected to be powered by a Haswell Intel Core i7 CPU and feature a 15.6-inch Full HD display. The notebook will also be equipped with 8GB of RAM and an outdated NVIDIA GTX 760M GPU with 2GB of dedicated VRAM. The reason behind opting for a relatively GPU could be to cut costs as newer GTX 900M series cards would certainly cost more. Similarly, sticking to older Haswell based CPU should also allow Xiaomi to lower costs and achieve a competitive price-point. Rumors suggest the Mi notebook could be priced under 3000 Chinese Yuan, which converts to about $465.
  • Microsoft OneDrive - here's how to score free cloud storage - While Onedrive's unlimited storage is still dead and buried, it is now possible to prevent the decrease from 15GB to 5GB. Shockingly, you can even keep your 15GB camera roll bonus too. How do you achieve this awesomeness? To score this awesome deal, simply click here and follow the instructions. Keep in mind, Microsoft could shut down this offer at any time, so I advise you to act fast. Be sure to tell your friends about it too! :)
  • Windows Live Mail 2012 requires an update to keep using it - The Microsoft Essentials pack, consisting of Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Live Writer (which is now available as an open source project) and Live Mail, has been in a state of limbo for quite a while now. The latest major update for the pack dates back to 2012 and still uses the Live branding that Microsoft abandoned in the same year. All of these apps are still available for download, but one of these apps, Live Mail, will soon stop working without the installation of a new required update.  Because of underlying updates on the Microsoft mail platforms (Outlook/Hotmail), Live Mail will lose the ability to receive emails. However, since the application still has quite a few users, Microsoft has provided an update that will prolong the life of the mail application and allow it to receive mails once again. Microsoft does recommend that any users of the Live Mail application switch over to the new Mail application that has been built-in to Windows 8 and Windows 10. These applications are still actively being developed, so it might be a smart choice to move over, since the support for Live Mail will probably end soon.  This free update is now available here and is dubbed "Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012" (KB 3093594).
  • Gmail Ending? Google Starts Migrating Users - Something rather interesting is happening at the Gmail.com domain right now. Google has started notifying users of its experimental 'Inbox By Gmail' service that this has replaced their Gmail account. The pop-up appears when Inbox users login and states "Thanks for trying Inbox! To make it easier we've updated Gmail to redirect you here". In plain URL terms this means the standalone inbox.google.com address for the beta service disappears and Inbox instead resides at gmail.com. The good news is any user who doesn't want Inbox to replace Gmail has the option to "Turn it Off" which pushes both services back to their dedicated domains. That said, what's quite clear is: 1. After 14 months of testing, Google clearly considers Inbox ready for prime time, and 2. In repositioning it over the gmail.com URL, Google sees Inbox as a replacement for Gmail rather than the separate service it has been until this point. Interestingly Inbox users report Google has been performing this quiet migration for some time. It started several months ago notifying a very small number of users and the response has obviously been positive enough for the migration to now to be expanded in larger numbers.
  • Google Music Family Plan, Available Today, Costs $15 Per Month - Families can now subscribe to Google Music for $15 per month. The service supports up to six separate users, who can all stream tunes simultaneously and manage their own favorites and playlists. The $15 monthly fee also includes YouTube Red, which offers an ad-free video experience on YouTube. Google Music supports family plans in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, France, and Germany. Accounts must be created through an Android device, but subscribers can listen on Android or iOS devices.
  • Facebook Optimizes News Feed for Slow Connections - Facebook continues its push to make the social network more widely available to people no matter their connection speed. The latest update to News Feed helps pre-load a set of stories for reading when the device has a slow, inconsistent, or nonexistent connection to the web. Facebook says it will scan the device to see which stories have already been loaded and select from a batch of new stories it feels are most relevant to the user when surfing via slow networks. Moreover, it allows people to comment on posts even when they have no connection at all. Comments will be loaded into posts/conversations once the device reconnects to a stronger network. These updates will chiefly benefit users in emerging nations where wireless networks are less robust. Facebook said it is updating the News Feed slowly for users in order to gather feedback before a larger release.
  • Critical Flaw Found In AVG, McAfee, Kaspersky Products - Researchers discovered the vulnerability in March when an enSilo product collided with an AVG Internet Security 2015 installation present on a customer's systems. A closer analysis revealed that the AVG product had been plagued by a flaw that could have been exploited to hack affected systems. enSilo later discovered that the same vulnerability, which it rated 'critical,' also affected Kaspersky's Anti-Virus 2015 MR2 and Internet Security 2015 MR2 products, and Intel Security's McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8.8. According to enSilo, the problem is related to how affected security products allocate a memory page with RWX (Read, Write, Execute) permissions at a constant predictable address. Experts say the vulnerability makes it easier for malicious actors to bypass Windows protections and exploit vulnerabilities in third-party applications, such as web browsers and Adobe Reader, to compromise the underlying system in a multi-stage attack. The company has developed a tool that allows users to determine if a vulnerable application is present on their system. The tool doesn't pinpoint the vulnerable application, but it provides information on where to start the analysis.
  • Google Details December Security Update - Google today released a security patch for Android devices to resolve 16 different issues. Google said it alerted its handset partners about the vulnerabilities on Nov. 2 and will make a new build of Android containing the patch available to AOSP within the next few days. Concurrently, Google will push the security patch to Nexus-branded handsets and tablets. Google said one of the vulnerabilities could lead to remote code execution via media files and is thus considered critical. To date, however, none of the vulnerabilities have been exploited. The security update will be delivered to Nexus devices over the air in the days ahead
  • Popularity of Apple devices prompts surge of new threats - A growing number of attackers have begun to target Apple operating systems, with the amount of infections and new malware threats increasing over the past two years. The number of new Mac OS X threats rose by 15 percent in 2014, while the number of iOS threats discovered this year has more than doubled, from three in 2014 to seven so far in 2015. Jailbroken devices are the focus of the majority of threats and, of the 13 iOS threats documented by Symantec to date, nine can only infect jailbroken devices. While the total number of threats targeting Apple devices remains quite low compared to Windows in the desktop space and Android in the mobile sector, Apple users cannot be complacent. Should Apple platforms continue to increase in popularity, the number of cybersecurity threats facing Apple users will likely grow in parallel.
  • Kazakhstan Will Require All Citizens To Install A Backdoor - In one of the most stupid things a country's government can ever do, Kazakhstan's elected officials passed a law that says that all Internet users shall install a "national security certificate" starting with January 1, 2016. All certificates will be distributed through local Kazakh telcos, and the country's biggest ISP has already announced the procedures on their site. Following the intense local and international backlash regarding this update, the Kazakhtelecom page has been taken down. By forcing all Internet users to install their national "security" certificates, the local government effectively has a backdoor on each device, allowing it to sniff encrypted Internet traffic. Of course, this certificate can also be abused by cyber-criminals, who can use it to perform man-in-the-middle attacks, especially for collecting financial details transmitted via online payments.
  • UK citizens may soon need licenses to photograph some stuff they already own - Changes to UK copyright law will soon mean that you may need to take out a licence to photograph classic designer objects even if you own them. That's the result of the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013, which extends the copyright of artistic objects like designer chairs from 25 years after they were first marketed to 70 years after the creator's death. In most cases, that will be well over a hundred years after the object was designed. During that period, taking a photo of the item will often require a licence from the copyright owner regardless of who owns the particular object in question. The UK government is holding a consultation into when this change should enter into force: after a six-month, three-year, or five-year transitional period. An article in The Bookseller puts the starting date as October 2016 without citing a source. In any case, the change is definitely coming, and it'll likely be quite soon.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M (Ti) GPU tipped to arrive in Q1 next year - According to a report from Notebookcheck, NVIDIA could release an updated GeForce GTX 965M (Ti) GPU early next year. The website claims NVIDIA may not market the newer GPU (N16E-GS) with a different name. That means most buyers won’t really know if the notebook they are about to purchase packs the newer and more powerful GTX 965M or the older GPU with lower performance. The new GPU will reportedly feature higher clock rates, with the base clock jumping to 935MHz from 924MHz and the maximum GPU boost clock going up to 1151MHz from 950MHz on the current GTX 965M. This roughly 20% higher clock rate is expected to result in a pretty decent performance boost compared to the current part, bringing it closer to the GeForce GTX 970M. Notebooks equipped with the updated GPU are expected to be available starting Q1 2016 from manufacturers such as Clevo, MSI, and Gigabyte.
  • Samsung Launches Refreshed Galaxy A Series - Samsung has announced the a new trio of smartphones that fall in the Galaxy A series of handsets. The Galaxy A7, A5, and A3 share metal-and-glass designs with narrow bezels and premium materials. Each phone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop and features a 13-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel front camera. The include 16GB of storage and support memory cards up to 128GB. The A7 has a 5.5-inch full HD screen, 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,300mAh battery; the A5 has a 5.2-inch full HD screen, 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 2,900mAh battery; and the A3 has a 4.7-inch 720p HD screen, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and a 2,300mAh battery. The A7 and A5 support rapid charging and include NFC/MST for mobile payments. Samsung expects the Galaxy A series will launch in China this month, with other markets to follow in 2016. Pricing was not announced.
  • Apple Open Sources Swift Programming Language - Apple has made its Swift programming language available as an open source download under the Apache 2.0 license. Apple first debuted Swift in June 2014. It is meant to help developers create iOS and OS X apps in a simpler environment than the traditional Objective-C. Apple says the source code is hosted on GitHub where anyone can use it to design and build apps. Because it is open source, developers can contribute code back to the project, which is being governed by a team of engineers at Apple. The download includes libraries, a debugger, and package manager. Apple also launched Swift.org, a central hub meant to help developers learn more about Swift.
  • AT&T to Raise Unlimited Plan Pricing by $5 in February - AT&T has confirmed reports that it plans to increase the cost of its old, grandfathered unlimited plan early next year. The rate will change from $30 per month to $35 per month, and marks the first increase this plan has seen in seven years. The change goes into effect in February. T-Mobile and Verizon have increased the prices of their unlimited plans in recent weeks, too. T-Mobile's unlimited data plan jumped from $30 per month to $45 per month, while Verizon's hopped from $30 to $50. AT&T no longer offers unlimited data to customers, and instead charges for defined buckets of LTE 4G access. Only customers who've maintained their old data plan over the years still have access to unlimited data. AT&T throttles the speeds of unlimited customers who surpass 22GB of usage in a single billing period.
  • T-Mobile offering $200 off 128GB iPhones - Customers who decide to switch from AT&T can purchase a 128GB iPhone for the price of a 16GB one, which translates to a $200 discount. Accessories such as Bluetooth speakers from UE and JBL, headphones, and fitness trackers from Fitbit are some of the other things that will also be offered at a discount in T-Mobile stores for the switchers.
  • Microsoft, global law enforcement agencies disrupt Dorkbot botnet - Microsoft, in cooperation with a number of law enforcement agencies around the world, managed to disrupt a botnet that’s infected over a million PCs across more than 190 countries
  • Samsung to Pay Apple $548M for Patents - with a Catch - Samsung will send Apple a check for $548 million to settle its ongoing patent litigation, according to FOSS Patents. The companies filed paperwork with a California court on Dec. 3 in which Samsung said it "has made arrangements to complete payment to Apple." Samsung may be cutting Apple a check, but the company reserves the right to seek reimbursement "in the event the partial judgment is reversed, modified, vacated or set aside on appeal." This case goes back to April 2011, when Apple sued Samsung over a number of patent- and design-related infringements. Apple was eventually awarded $1.05 billion in damages after Samsung was found guilty of willfully infringing on Apple's intellectual property. That original sum has since been whittled down during the appeals process. Apple and Samsung have already settled the majority of other lawsuits between them. Whether or not this payment marks the end of the road for this particular case is unclear.

AMD Crimson Drivers Issue - tech
(hx) 04:48 PM CET - Nov,30 2015 - Post a comment / read (11)
PC hardware manufacturer AMD recently released brand new drivers for their Graphics Cards called Crimson which offered improved performance in certain games notably Counter Strike: GO. After a couple of days users are reporting bugs and glitches with the new drivers with the major one killing numerous GPUs. The Crimson Drivers are supposedly limiting fan speed of the Graphics Cards which are causing them to overheat and die before the user can realize it. Drivers are overiding user setting and setting fan speeds to just 20% which is not suitable especially while playing demanding games. For those who have the Crimson Drivers installed and are looking for a fix can look into the temporary solution listed here which turns the fan to auto and change speeds as the temperature of your GPU rises. The solution is temporary because it the settings reset with every reboot.

It'll be interesting to see how AMD handles this as the new drivers are killing Graphics Cards which could lead to a them paying some sort of compensation to those affected.

Update:For its part, AMD says it is aware of 'isolated reports of low fan states following the installation of Radeon Software Crimson Edition on select Radeon GPUs.' The company says it has figured out the issue and the hotfix rolling out today should fix things up.

  • Intel 2016 CPU Roadmap Leaked - The latest Intel CPU roadmap for 2016 has leaked and it features information on several upcoming CPU models including Broadwell-E, Apollo Lake, and Kaby Lake-S. Broadwell-E is the next entry in the "high-end" CPU market and will have four different models with the lowest level CPU sporting six cores at 3.4GHz. Kaby Lake-S will replace the recently released Skylake processors though it should be noted that its release was only enabled by the delay to Cannonlake. It will add support for USB 3.1, HDCP 2.2, and increase PCIe 3.0 lanes from 20 to 24. Apollo Lake will take the place of Braswell, a low power chip designed for mobile devices.
  • MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Motherboard Tested - MSI was among the first to participate in our Z170 review series. Will the now-mature firmware give its $180 Z170A Gaming M5 a lead in the upper-midrange LGA 1151 enthusiast segment?
  • ASUS Announces 20th Anniversary Gold Edition GTX 980 Ti - ASUS is releasing the GTX 980 Ti version for the 20th Anniversary Golden Edition to celebrate 20 years of making graphics cards. This will be the last chance to get the limited edition gold card. It is not just a GTX 980 Ti in gold, this is the fastest GTX 980 Ti on the planet - even without liquid cooling! Yes, you can buy it, with the GPU base clock set to a whopping 1,266MHz, and 1,367Mhz for GPU boosted clock! To put that in perspective, that is even higher than the mighty ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti with a base clock of of 1,216 MHz and boosted clock of 1,317Mhz! This translates to 22.1% more performance in Grand Theft Auto V and 20.8% more frames per second in Witcher 3 when compared to reference!  Advanced features such as Memory Defroster for LN2 overclocking, color-coded Load Indicator to display GPU load level, and Safe Mode for instant VBIOS reload are all onboard. DirectCU II with 0dB fan technology provides complete silence for general use, while being 30% cooler and three times quieter than reference during more intensive gaming.
  • Radeon R9 Nano roundup - At 1440p the AMD Radeon R9 Nano provided a decent gameplay experience. In most games we were able to use nearest to highest, if not highest game settings in games. The only game we only really needed to back down on settings was The Witcher 3. All other games were playable at enjoyable game settings on the Nano. Considering the small form factor computer we had built this is good news for the 1440p gameplay experience. The AMD Radeon R9 Fury X took it further and was faster than the AMD Radeon R9 Nano. Though we were already experiencing a high level of gameplay, the Fury X added more performance to the mix and did allow some higher settings. Even better still the GeForce GTX 980 Ti had the best performance, and allowed the highest overall settings. In pure terms of an enjoyable 1440p gameplay experience, the Fury X and GTX 980 Ti are faster, but the Nano did deliver an enjoyable experience, it did not suffer.
  • NEC EA275UHD 27-inch UHD Monitor Review - If you're interested in Ultra HD for gaming, this monitor doesn't break any new ground. It's a 60Hz panel and forgoes both G-Sync and FreeSync. A 60Hz refresh rate at 3840x2160 resolution is likely to be with us until newer DisplayPort and HDMI standards are able to handle the extra bandwidth. And at this writing the only frame-rate-matching-capable UHD screen available is Acer's XB280HK which offers G-Sync technology. The EA275UHD therefore is squarely aimed at the enterprise. Pretty much anything NEC makes can be considered luxury business class based on build quality alone. The Ultra HD factor however takes this display to the top of its category.
  • Microsoft cumulative update (KB3120677) for Windows 10 - Microsoft has now rolled out an updated Cumulative Update (KB3120677) via Windows Update, replacing the previous one that rolled out a week ago, and now brings the OS version up to 10586.14. This update only applies to systems updated to version 15/11 (November Update). You can apply it by going in to All Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and then 'Check for updates', or simply wait for Windows 10 to automatically apply it.
  • Wi-Fi enabled Barbie doll can be easily hacked - Security experts have warned that Mattel's latest Wi-Fi enabled Barbie doll can easily be exploited by hackers to spy on children and listen in on household conversations without the owner's knowledge. In addition to having Wi-Fi capabilities, the Hello Barbie doll features speech recognition technology that allows it to listen to a child and respond via voice – like a less-advanced version of digital assistants such as Cortana and Siri. Mattel says the toy "listens and remembers the user's likes and dislikes, giving everyone their own unique experience."  The conversations are recorded and stored on the servers of ToyTalk, the company behind the technology. There's even an option for parents to upload and share the conversations online. Security researcher Matt Jakubowski discovered that when connected to a Wi-Fi network the doll was vulnerable to hackers. He was easily able to access the doll's account information, system information, stored audio files and microphone.
  • Anonymous takes down ISIS website, replaces it with Viagra ad - Anonymous seems to be going all out with waging war against terrorist group ISIS. Ghost Sec, a group related to the global hacktivist network, defaced a website that promotes ISIS propaganda, and replaced its contents with an advertisement for the sexual performance-enhancing drug Viagra.
  • $10 Tool Can Guess (And Steal) Your AMEX Credit Card Number - Watch-sized gadget, called MagSpoof, can store more than a hundred credit card numbers and emit an electromagnetic field that's strong enough to hit a credit card reader's sensor from close proximity, sending a signal that imitates a credit card being swiped. Kamkar's device also includes a button that implements prediction algorithm.
  • Xiaomi Adds Fingerprint Sensor to Redmi Note 3 - Xiaomi today announced the Redmi Note 3, a big-screened smartphone that includes several firsts. The Redmi Note 3 is the first phone from Xiaomi made from metal, and also the first to offer a fingerprint sensor for securing the handset. Xiaomi says the fingerprint sensor can read prints in 0.3 seconds. The Redmi Note 3 has a 5.5-inch full HD screen and is powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 processor. The main camera features a 13-megapixel sensor and the front camera has a 5-megapixel sensor with dozens of beauty modes for selfies. The Redmi Note 3 packs a 4,000mAh battery, WiFi, Bluetooth, and dual SIM slots. It will be sold in two variants, 2GB RAM with 16GB of storage ($140) and 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage ($172). The phone runs Xiaomi's MIUI 7 operating system, which is based on Android. Xiaomi did not announce plans to bring the handset to the U.S.
  • Skype for iPhone Adds Number and Address Detection - Skype improved its app for the iPhone and iPad today with support for call and calendar actions. Skype 6.6 now highlights phone numbers, addresses, times, and dates. Tapping on highlighted text starts the corresponding action. For example, tapping a phone number within a message will bring up the Skype dialpad with the number preloaded, or tapping an address will open Apple Maps and search for the location. Similar actions are available for the calendar, as well. Skype will automatically set up events and pull in any relevant details from the message thread. The calendar appointment will include a Skype chat URL in the notes, too, that goes back to the message. Last, Skype 6.6 improves multitasking by making it easier to return to Skype audio/video calls from the instant messaging or contact sections of the app. Skype 6.6 for iOS is free to download from the iTunes App Store.
  • Verizon Allowing Customers to Send Data as a Gift - Verizon Wireless today made it possible for subscribers to send one another the gift of data access. Verizon customers can send 1GB of LTE 4G data to family/friends for $10. Gifted data will be billed directly to the sender's account. The data can be purchased through the Verizon Messages app or Verizon's web site. Verizon said an update to the Verizon Messages app for Android, being pushed out today, adds the data-gifting feature.

Although 51% of American Internet users is not the same as 51% of Americans, so half of Americans do not use Netflix :-) And the rest are busy playing Fallout 4 :D FYI, Hulu now offers no commercial streaming, costs an extra $4.

  • Intel Reportedly Prepping 10-Core Broadwell-E Processors - In August 2014, Intel released the first Haswell-E processor, the Core i7-5960X. Unlike its predecessors, the Core i7-5960X jumped to eight cores and 16 threads - but the lower clock speeds that this required paradoxically made the chip a less-than-great alternative for gamers. In many titles, the 4.4GHz clock speed on the Core i7-4790K was a better gaming option than the eight cores but lower top-end clock speed (3GHz base, 3.5GHz Turbo) that the 5960X offered. Intel is now working on the successor to Haswell-E, and if recent rumors are true, the company is going to address this discrepancy with the upcoming Broadwell-E. The upcoming family will launch with multiple SKUs that should address the needs of both gamers and other high-end users who have more use for threads and less for clock speed. According to Chinese site XFastest, the Core i7-6950X will be a 10-core, 20-thread CPU with a base clock of 3GHz, an unknown Turbo frequency, and 25MB of L3 cache. That's two more cores than the current Core i7-5960X, with an equivalent clock speed and the same cache allocation on a per-core basis
  • iPad Pro users report freezing after charging - iPad Pro owners across the world have been reporting a serious bug that appears to affect all models of the device. Users have taken to the Apple Support Communities forum, saying that after charging their iPad Pros overnight, or for a number hours, they return to find the device unresponsive and the screen completely black. A temporary fix appears to be "force restarting" (holding both the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds). Despite the iPad Pro returning to normal function and displaying 100% charge after the fix, users say the issue returns when they next recharge the device. Apple-enthusiast blog Mac Kung Fu offers another short-term fix, suggesting the device be set to Airplane Mode when charging, leaving questions about the iCloud backup service. In a post on its support site, Apple said that it is "aware of this issue and is investigating", but did not offer any indication of when a fix might be available.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Premium To Have 14-Core GPU, 4K Display - According to a new rumor that circulated on Friday, a Samsung Galaxy S7 Premium Edition is being planned by Samsung, and will be offered only in South Korea. This super spec'd version of Sammy's flagship phone is said to feature a 4K display, and a dual-lens camera module made by Sony. At the heart of this Galaxy S7 Premium Edition is a different version of the Exynos 8890 chipset. The Exynos 8890 SoC is rumored to be the chip powering the Samsung Galaxy S7 in all markets other than the U.S. and China. In those two countries, the Snapdragon 820 SoC will be driving the phone. The graphics processor on the Exynos 8890 is the Mali-T880 with 12 cores. A second version of the Exynos 8890 for the Galaxy S7 Special Edition, reportedly comes with a version of the Mali-T880 with 14 cores. ARM has said that the graphics processor is scalable from 1 to as many as 16 cores, so this is not science fiction. The source of this rumor is a posting on a Weibo page. This means, as tasty a dish as such a phone would be, you need to take this rumor with a grain of salt.
  • BlackBerry PRIV Review - The Priv is BlackBerry's new flagship phone, but it's also much more than that. As the company's first phone to use Google's Android instead of a BlackBerry OS, it represents a major new strategic direction. It also comes as the company is considering whether or not to continue making phones at all, so its success is crucial. The Priv has a premium design with a slide-out keyboard, curved-edge screen, and high-end camera. How is it in person?
  • Lumia 950 review: Windows Phone finally has a new flagship - will anyone care? - The Lumia 950 is a nice phone. The screen is very pretty. The camera is great. Its looks don't excite me, but it feels solid. I'm sure Windows 10 Mobile will get better. But I think the iris scanner was a mistake-Microsoft should have gone with a fingerprint reader-and the lack of all-carrier CDMA support hurts. And while Continuum is interesting and fascinates me in some ways, as things stand right now with limited availability both of Universal Windows Apps and hardware to use Continuum with, it's not a reason to buy a Windows phone. Not yet.
  • Microsoft Not Bringing Android Apps To Windows After All? - Microsoft unveiled some huge news back in April, pledging to allow developers to run reworked Android and iOS apps on Windows. While Microsoft is pushing ahead with its iOS porting tools, the company's Android work has been put on hold. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed to The Verge that the company has pulled back on dedicating employees to Android app porting, favoring the iOS route instead.
  • Google Photos for Android Can Delete Local Files to Save Space - Google is rolling out an update to Google Photos for Android today that lets people free up on-device storage by deleting local files. A new option in the settings menu called "Free Up Space" lets users set the app to automatically delete local photos that have been backed up to the cloud. The feature is opt-in, and asks for permission before deleting local photos. The Google Photos app now supports deleting photos from memory cards, as well. Google is rolling out a complimentary change to the web-based version of Google Photos that lets people adjust the quality of stored photos after they've been backed up online. Google Photos is free to download from the Google Play Store. Google offers "unlimited" storage for high-quality photos, or limited storage for full-resolution photos

For the harder target of Google Chrome, Zerodium's price rises to $80,000. Remote exploits that entirely defeat the security of an Android or Windows Phone device go for as much as $100,000. And an iOS attack can earn a hacker half a million dollars, by far the highest price on the list.
  • ARRIS Cable Modem - Serial Backdoor - Shodan searches revealed more than 600,000 affected modems in the wild. Vulnerable cable modem models including TG862A, TG862G and DG860A.
  • Ads Using Inaudible Sound To Link Your Phone, TV, Tablet, And PC - Privacy advocates are warning federal authorities of a new threat that uses inaudible, high-frequency sounds to surreptitiously track a person's online behavior across a range of devices, including phones, TVs, tablets, and computers. The ultrasonic pitches are embedded into TV commercials or are played when a user encounters an ad displayed in a computer browser. While the sound can't be heard by the human ear, nearby tablets and smartphones can detect it. When they do, browser cookies can now pair a single user to multiple devices and keep track of what TV commercials the person sees, how long the person watches the ads, and whether the person acts on the ads by doing a Web search or buying a product.
  • Hackers Identifying With Anonymous To Isis: We Will Never Let Up - Last week the war against ISIS was brought back into focus when several terrorists bombed, took hostages and killed numerous civilians in several locations of the French capital, Paris. In a new video announcing the new campaign, an unidentified man donning the iconic mask said "These attacks cannot go unpunished. That's why Anonymous activists from all over the world will hunt you down. Yes, you, the vermin who kill innocent victims - we will hunt you down like we did to those who carried out the attacks on Charlie Hebdo. So get ready for a massive reaction from Anonymous."

The simulator software probably knows where the game's camera position and orientation are stored in memory and it uses those to calculate the motions. It wouldn't be much work to adapt this to most other games.

NVIDIA Unveils Pascal GPU: 16GB of Memory! - tech
(hx) 10:15 AM CET - Nov,19 2015 - Post a comment / read (2)
NVIDIA has revealed more Pascal GPU details at the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in Japan. Pascal is expected to hit the market during the first half of 2016.
As always, the Pascal GPU will be manufactured in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), using the brand new 16nm FinFET process. This process is much more than a simple number, since it marks the shift from planar, 2D transistors to the FinFET i.e. 3D transistors. This shift required that the engineers make lot of changes in the thought process, and should result in significant power savings.

But that is just the beginning, as Pascal will bring support for up to 32GB of HBM2 memory. However, the actual products based on Pascal will launch with 16GB HBM2 memory, and more memory will depend solely on memory vendors such as SK.Hynix and Samsung. What is changing the most is bandwidth. Both the Kepler-based Tesla (K40) and Maxwell-based M4/M40 featured 12GB of GDDR5 and achieved up to 288GB/s of memory bandwidth. Those 16GB HBM SDRAM (packed in four 4GB HBM2 chips) will bring 1TB/s in bandwidth, while internally the GPU surpasses the 2TB/s barrier.

Pascal will also be available in multi-GPU packaging, replacing the Tesla K80 (NVIDIA skipped Maxwell-gen dual-GPU Tesla). Combined figures are very interesting to compare – 24GB GDDR5 and 480GB/s bandwidth should be replaced with 32GB HBM2 and 2TB/s bandwidth, mutually connected through NVLink rather than PCIe. The NVLink will enable up to 80GB/s, which should replace PLX PCIe Gen3 bridge chips that can only support 16GB/s (8GB/s per GPU). This part should be ‘warm up’ for 2018 and the Volta architecture.

AMD Catalyst 15.11.1 Beta Driver - tech
(hx) 09:32 AM CET - Nov,18 2015 - Post a comment
AMD has released launched the Catalyst 15.11.1 beta drivers for their Radeon graphics cards, bringing performance optimizations for Star Wars Battlefront. The release notes for the Catalyst 15.11.1 beta drivers don't specifically say what performance optimizations you'll get for Star Wars Battlefront, but considering AMD's close work with EA in the past, it looks like this game will support features such as CrossFire at launch. The Catalyst 15.11.1 drivers also bring performance optimizations for Call of Duty: Black Ops III; Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which is set to launch on PC on November 19th; and Fallout 4. Unfortunately, these new drivers still don't support CrossFire in Fallout 4, as the game engine itself needs work before AMD (and Nvidia) can release multi-GPU-optimized drivers. There are a couple of known issues in these drivers that gamers should be aware of. Both Star Wars Battlefront and Assassin's Creed Syndicate cannot be launched in full screen mode on some laptops with an Intel CPU and AMD GPU, while Black Ops III may flicker on occasion while CrossFire is enabled.

  • Chrome Support Ending For Windows XP, Vista In 2016 - Google Chrome, by some estimates the world's third most popular desktop web browser, will cease to support older versions of Microsoft's Windows and Apple's OS X operating systems. In a recent blog post, Google announced that it intends to discontinue support for Chrome on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X versions 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 by April 2016 because "these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple." Google did not release a specific date when for when it intends to discontinue support.
  • Windows 10 November Update ISOs are now available - Microsoft began the rollout of its first major update to Windows 10 since the OS was released back in July. The November Update - better known to Windows Insiders as build 10586 - brings a wide range of improvements, including significant boosts to performance of the OS. Of course, not everyone wants to upgrade their existing installations, but there's good news for those who favor installing the new build afresh. As WinSuperSite's Richard Hay spotted, the ISOs can be downloaded now from MSDN - but of course, that requires an MSDN subscription. For those without a subscription, Microsoft is directing users to its Windows 10 Software Download page, which has been updated with the newest OS version, and explains:  If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10 using a USB or DVD, you can use the media creation tool below to create your own installation media with either a USB flash drive or a DVD. The tool provides file formats optimized for download speed and can be used to create ISO files.
  • Google Maps Now Available Offline - Google today said Maps can now be used without an active internet connection. People can download maps for cities, counties, and even entire countries so routing and basic navigation tools will function when there's a poor connection or no connection at all. Offline maps support simple routing between points, but don't support live traffic. Maps will only download regions via WiFi, and will automatically jump to a live version of Maps when it recognizes that there is an internet connection. Google said offline support is rolling out to Android users first, and will eventually be available to iOS users. Google Maps is free to download from the Play Store and iTunes App Store.
  • T-Mobile's Uncarrier X Event Heralds Free Video Streaming - T-Mobile today announced free wireless data streaming at an event in Los Angeles. The Uncarrier program mirrors that of T-Mobile's Music Freedom, which lets customers stream music over its network without impacting data allotments. The free streaming video program is called Binge On and works in much the same way. The service is compatible with 24 video services at launch, such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go/Now, Showtime, Vevo, and others. T-Mobile said video will be optimized via proprietary technology to reduce how much data it consumes as it transits the network. T-Mobile said the service is open to any video service that meets its technical requirements. Video is streamed at DVD quality, which means 480p, not 720p or 1080p high definition. Customers can toggle between free 480p video or data-consuming HD at any time. T-Mobile also "doubled the data" available in each of its data buckets for families and businesses at no additional cost. The data plans available are 2GB, 6GB, and 10GB. The base Simple Choice plan costs $50 per month and now includes 2GB of data. The second line costs $30 and each additional line after that is $10. Customers who subscribe to T-Mobile's

Fallout 4 PC Graphics Card Benchmark - tech
(hx) 05:33 PM CET - Nov,10 2015 - Post a comment / read (14)
GamersNexus looks in depth at Fallout 4's graphics settings and performance on PC. The below Fallout 4 PC benchmark tests FPS performance across nVidia and AMD GPUs, including the GTX 750 Ti, 960, 970, 270X, 285, 390X, and many more. VRAM and memory consumption is also looked at loosely below, hopefully establishing a baseline for the best video cards for Fallout 4 on PC.
First off, the obvious: The 1080p GPU benchmark, as you'll see, places a GTX 970 above an R9 390X by about 5.1%. We did not expect this to happen in Fallout 4 and set forth to validate the findings. We thought we'd located the setting creating the 970's lead when tweaking each option, eventually noticing that Shadow Distance impacted results by nearly 20FPS - enough to close the gap - but that then reproduced my initial result. When setting Shadow Distance to its lowest setting (medium) on both the R9 390X and GTX 970, the result still posts the 970 by a couple of frames ahead of the 390X. Actually, it's nearly the same ~5% gap. It's not Shadow Distance, then. We tried every other setting and could not find one that produced a profound performance hit for AMD when it did not also do such for nVidia.

That leads me to believe this is either a game optimization or, more likely, a driver optimization issue. We contacted AMD late last week in search of the seemingly-inevitable Fallout 4 day-one drivers, but were told the drivers weren't ready yet.

It is possible that the 390X will outpace the GTX 970 at 1080p with a driver update or game optimization patch, but the data (as below) is how it stands right now.

1080/ultra settings allow Fallout 4 to stretch down to the $225 GTX 960 and R9 285 ($206) region, which would also include (not present) the R9 380. The GTX 950 isn't quite enough to push 1080/ultra, the 960 can make it work with some light tweaking or just by accepting ~50FPS, and the R9 285 operates at 54FPS average. The R9 285 tanks its 0.1% low frametimes down to 30 on occasion, but it's nothing that ruins the experience.

Based on these charts, to play Fallout 4 at 1080/max requires about a GTX 960 ($225) or R9 380 ($230) for best fluidity during peak workloads within the game. Tuning settings to "High" will allow the GTX 950 ($170) and deprecated R9 270X (equivalent: R7 370 for $150) to approach the "playable" FPS range.

At the high-end, the GTX 980 Ti, 980, 970, R9 390X, and R9 290X are all capable performers that regularly exceed 60FPS using 1080/ultra. Fallout 4 isn't the kind of game where you need more than 60FPS, though, especially because it's got an FPS lock capping framerates to 60 by default.

NVIDIA GeForce 358.91 WHQL Game Ready Driver - tech
(hx) 11:34 PM CET - Nov,09 2015 - Post a comment
Fallout 4 will be made available worldwide on Tuesday, November 10th and NVIDIA has released GeForce 358.91 WHQL Game Ready video card drivers for owners of their video cards. You can download the Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 64-bit drivers here and the Windows 10 64-bit drivers here. NVIDIA GeForce 358.91 WHQL do not have any changes to the SLI profiles, 3D Vision Profiles or any Windows fixes included.

In other news, NVIDIA also released a detailed Fallout 4 graphics, performance and tweaking guide that is a must read for gamers that want to get the best Fallout 4 gaming experience on the PC. According to NVIDIA's own internal benchmarking, the GeForce GTX 970 is ideal to play Fallout 4 at 1920 x 1080 with high setting, 60 GPS gameplay. If you'd like to play at 2560×1440 then you'll need to move up to the more powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti video card to get the same experience at that higher screen resolution.

  • Testing DirectX 11 vs. DirectX 12 performance with Stardock's Ashes of the Singularity - Ashes of the Singularity looks to be an awesome RTS game and an exciting insight into what DX12 has to offer. Gamers should bear in mind that this is still just a single DX12 game and is unlikely to represent DX12 performance as a whole -- no single game could. As is the case with DX11 gaming, it's likely that some DX12 games will favor AMD while others prefer Nvidia.  Although Nvidia does go backwards in DX12 as AMD goes forward, the margins are far from catastrophic. Take the GTX 980 Ti vs. Fury X battle at 1080p for example. Under DX11 the 980 Ti is 15% faster while it is just 2% faster when using DX12. The exact same thing was seen when comparing the GTX 980 and R9 390X.

  • New auto-rooting Android malware infects more than 20,000 apps -  Researchers have discovered a new type of Android malware that often masquerades as a popular application such as Facebook and Twitter. This so-called "trojanized adware" can root a device and install itself as a system application, making removing it almost impossible as the malicious code is designed to survive even a "factory data reset" wipe. Security firm Lookout said it has found more than 20,000 samples of trojanized apps that repackage the code or other features found in apps from the Google Play store and then get posted to third-party stores. In most cases the apps are fully functional and don't alert the owner. As well as the aforementioned social media apps, the trojanized adware has also been found in copies of Candy Crush, Google Now, NYTimes, Okta, SnapChat and WhatsApp. Once one of these apps is installed it gains root access to the Android operating system, which means the app can break out of its restricted sandbox and take control of an entire device, its application and data. The goal of these apps appears to be to aggressively display ads on the devices they infect in order to generate money for the attacker.
  • Google Issues Android Security Patch - Google has pushed out a security update to devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Google said the most urgent issue pertained to "a critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files." Google says, to its knowledge, none of these weaknesses have been exploited. Google alerted its handset partners about the vulnerability on October 5 and will issue an update to the AOSP variant of Android in the next 48 hours. Devices with Android builds LMY48X and higher will show an Android security patch date of November 1

(hx) 07:51 PM CET - Nov,05 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
Call of Duty: Black Ops III releases tomorrow and Treyarch's Director of Development has revealed via Twitter that the game will be more GPU bound than CPU bound. When a fan asked about the CPU scaling of Black Ops III's engine, pcdev replied that the "GPU power is more important in this engine." The game will ship with SLI support (NVIDIA released yesterday a new driver). There will also be Crossfire support, however AMD has not released yet its optimized driver for this game. In other news, he also has revealed that the PC version will feature 100% dedicated servers for public matches and arena, and "Listen Server" hosts for Custom Games.
