AMD Radeon Software Edition 16.4.1 Driver - tech
(hx) 11:44 AM CEST - Apr,05 2016 - Post a comment
AMD has released a new update to their Radeon Software Crimson Edition graphics card driver, version 16.4.1, that includes performance optimizations for Remedy Entertainment's Quantum Break, which is set to launch on April 5th. According to AMD's driver release notes, users can expect to see up to 35% better performance in Quantum Break when playing the game on a Radeon R9 Fury X. AMD has also introduced support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in this driver, which should be arriving in the hands of consumers very soon, if not already. The 16.4.1 drivers fix issues where some DirectX 12 games were frame rate capped, and where Hitman flickered at high shadow settings. There are still a collection of known issues thorugh, such as Need for Speed's poor Crossfire scaling, The Division flickering in Crossfire mode, and low fan speeds on a small subset of Radeon R9 380 owners.

TechNews - New self-protecting USB trojan - tech
(hx) 03:03 PM CEST - Apr,02 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • New self-protecting USB trojan able to avoid detection  - A unique data-stealing trojan has been spotted on USB devices in the wild – and it is different from typical data-stealing malware. Each instance of this trojan relies on the particular USB device on which it is installed and it leaves no evidence on the compromised system. Moreover, it uses a very special mechanism to protect itself from being reproduced or copied, which makes it even harder to detect. Where other malware uses ‘good old-fashioned approaches' like Autorun files or crafted shortcuts in order to get users to run it, USB Thief uses also another technique. This method depends on the increasingly common practice of storing portable versions of popular applications such as Firefox, NotePad++ and TrueCrypt on USB drives. The malware takes advantage of this trend by inserting itself into the command chain of such applications, in the form of a plugin or a dynamically linked library (DLL). And therefore, whenever such an application is executed, the malware will also be run in the background. What really sets this malware apart, however, is its self-protection mechanism.
  • Petya ransomware reportedly encrypts hard drives  -  Now a new type of ransomware, dubbed Petya, has been discovered that encrypts a user's hard drive - instead of individual files - during an operating system's boot process. Petya is distributed via an email message that claims to be from someone seeking to be hired by a company; however, the message itself does not include any email attachments for a potential victim to download. Instead, it includes a hyperlink to a Trojan Horse masquerading as a resume hosted by the legitimate cloud storage service Dropbox
  • Xamarin now comes free with Visual Studio - The Xamarin software is now included for free in all versions of Microsoft's Visual Studio IDE! Xamarin also has a few open-source efforts to announce. The company will be open-sourcing the Xamarin SDKs for Android, iOS and Mac in "the coming months."
  • Amazon to Ban Sale of Non-Compliant USB-C Cables - In order to protect consumers, Amazon said it will no longer sell USB Type-C cables that don't conform to the published spec. Specifically, Amazon stated that its retailer partners are not allowed to list "any USB-C cable or adapter product that is not compliant with standard specifications issued by 'USB Implementers Forum'." The USB-IF is the standards body that created and manages the USB-C spec. USB-C is slowly replacing micro USB as the common port on smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Unlike micro USB ports, USB-C is reversible and easy to use. It can also send power in both directions. Cables not manufactured properly can damage or ruin electronic devices. Amazon didn't say how swiftly it will make its partners comply with the ban.

  • The Linux command line and Bash shell is coming to Windows 10 - Microsoft is committed to making the Windows developer experience better than ever, which is why they're bringing the popular Bash shell, alongside the entire Linux command environment, to Windows 10 in the upcoming Anniversary Update. Developers have been able to use Linux command shells like Bash for years through third-party tools, but this is the first time that Microsoft has actually implemented the functionality directly into Windows. The company partnered with Canonical, known for the Linux distribution Ubuntu, to ensure the Bash experience is just as good in Windows as it is in variants of Linux. During Microsoft's Build 2016 keynote, it was revealed that developers will be able to download the Linux command line from the Windows Store when the Anniversary Update becomes available. Microsoft's Kevin Gallo stated during the event that "this is not a VM" or "cross-compiled tools" but a fully-fledged Linux shell running in Windows.
  • Instagram Extending Video Length to 60 Seconds - Instagram today said users will be able to share videos up to 60 seconds in length, which is up significantly from the previous limit of 12 seconds. Instagram is making the change in response to the rapid rise in time people spend watching Instagram videos. The extended video clip length is being rolled out slowly to users over the next few months. The iOS version of Instagram is being updated today with the ability to assemble videos from multiple clips found in the camera roll. Instagram is free to download from the iTunes App Store. Instagram didn't say when the same features will be added to the Android app.
  • Sony will charge $30 per 4k movie - Sony first revealed its 4K streaming service, Ultra, back at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Now, the company's home video arm (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) has announced that it will launch on April 4. The service, accessed via an Android app, will be available exclusively on Sony's new 4K TV sets. There won't be a rental option at launch; instead, users will pay $30 to purchase a movie. This was apparently a "commercial decision,” but Sony said if there turns out to be a demand for rentals, the company could introduce the feature “pretty quickly." Initially, you'll only be able to rent movies from Sony Pictures, but the company said it wants to add content from other studios. “Over time, we want to expand the breath and depth of the content,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment VP Jake Winett. Once bought, titles will be stored in Sony's Ultraviolet cloud service, probably due to the TVs not possessing enough onboard storage to hold 4K movies. There will be around 40 to 50 titles available on Ultra when it launches, including newer movies such as Concussion and The Walk, as well as older ones like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The company plans to add TV programs at a later date, but it hasn't revealed which ones or how much they'll cost. The service will also offer people the opportunity to upgrade SD and HD movies from their Ultraviolet library to 4K for $12 to $15.
  • Microsoft's Anniversary Update Coming This Summer - Microsoft announced today that it will be releasing a free update on the one year anniversary of Windows 10. The update will include stuff like Windows Hello, Windows Ink, Cortana updates and developer mode for the Xbox One. The company also took advantage of today's announcement to let the world know that the HoloLens is available as of today.
  • Verizon Confirms Pending $20 Upgrade Fee - Verizon Wireless today confirmed that it plans to charge customers $20 to upgrade to new devices beginning April 4. The fee will apply to customers who buy handsets with installment plans, or buy phones at full price. Verizon will assess the fee at third-party retailers, too, such as purchases made at the Apple Store or Best Buy. "The upgrade fee helps cover our increased support costs associated with customers switching devices," explained a Verizon spokesperson to Phonescoop via email. "Customers can pay the charge when they upgrade, bill it to their account, or trade in an old device to offset the cost. The fee for upgrading on device payment is still half of the two-year contract upgrade fee." Verizon charges contract customers $40 when upgrading devices. AT&T instituted its own device upgrade fee of $15 last year. Sprint recently lowered its upgrade fee from $36 to $30. T-Mobile charges $20 for a SIM card starter pack, which is widely seen as an upgrade fee.
  • LG G5 Officially Goes On Sale March 31 - LG said its G5 smartphone will be available for sale in Korea starting March 31, with the U.S. to follow April 1. The G5 will reach other regions, including Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, over time. LG says more than 200 carriers plan to sell the phone. In the U.S., that includes AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless, all of which will offer the phone on April 1. Along with the G5 itself, LG plans to sell the accompanying modules and accessories, called LG Friends. The two most notable Friends as the CAM Plus and Hi-Fi Plus, which are modules that plug directly into the bottom of the G5. The CAM Plus will be available in the U.S., but LG hasn't said if the Hi-Fi Plus will also be available. Other Friends include the 360 VR headset, 360 CAM, Rolling Bot, Tone Platinum, and H3 by B&O. Pricing for the LG G5 varies by carrier. The phone has a 5.3-inch quad HD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 16-megapixel camera, and USB Type-C.
  • Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman Blue-Ray Announced - Warner Bros. has announced that the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman (trailer) is heading to home video on July 16th, right ahead of the August 5th release of the Suicide Squad movie. Virtual 3D Teleportation in Real-time - tech
(hx) 11:52 PM CEST - Mar,27 2016 - Post a comment
Holoportation is a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high-quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted anywhere in the world in real time. When combined with mixed reality displays such as HoloLens, this technology allows users to see, hear, and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they are actually present in the same physical space. Communicating and interacting with remote users becomes as natural as face-to-face communication.

This is where the HP Envy 13 comes in: it packs hardware that’s comparable to a $1,000 laptop in a MacBook Air-like package, complete with a price that starts at just $800. In some ways, the Envy is the budget high-end laptop that price-conscious shoppers may be after.

  • Microsoft launches Tay, an AI chat bot - Microsoft has unveiled a new artificial intelligence-powered chat bot called Tay. Developed by Microsoft's Technology and Research team with help from the Bing team, Tay isn't a virtual assistant like Siri or Facebook's M. Instead, it's a true chat bot in the sense that it's meant to engage and entertain people. Surely Microsoft didn't build an AI bot just to entertain people, right? Of course not. Tay is an experiment to conduct research on conversational understanding. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have become incredibly skilled over the past several years but most platforms still struggle with things like language context and humor.

  • Microsoft extends support for older Windows versions on Skylake - Microsoft previously announced that Windows 10 would be the only version supported on Skylake systems for the full duration of its support period. Users still running Windows 7 or 8.1 would have had until July 17, 2017, or roughly a year and a half, to move to Windows 10. After that period, older versions of Windows running on Skylake CPUs would only receive critical security updates. Microsoft has now updated its Skylake support policy, and saw it fit to extend the support period for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on Skylake devices. Users now have full support for their OSs until July 17, 2018. This amounts to one year added to the previously-announced cutoff date. After this date, the story is the same as before: users will only receive critical security updates for their systems until their operating systems reach the end of their extended support periods - January 14, 2020 for Windows 7 and January 10, 2023 for Windows 8.1.
  • Corsair Hydro GFX GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review - Corsair is obviously a well-known company in the PC hardware space. The company started off making memory, but has expanded its portfolio to include cases, power supplies, closed-loop water coolers and peripherals. Most recently, Corsair added a graphics card to its line-up: the Hydro GFX, a liquid-cooled GeForce GTX 980 Ti born of a partnership with MSI. Rather than simply providing its cooler to MSI (similar to what Cooler Master did with AMD's Radeon R9 Fury X), Corsair is branding the Hydro GFX under its own name. But for all intents and purposes, the card is identical to MSI's GeForce GTX 980 Ti Sea Hawk, right down to the MSI logos plastered all over it.
  • Hands On With the Retail Oculus Rift: Countdown to Launch - Overall the hardware is not perfect: pixel density is plenty workable, but clearly there is room for improvement. However perhaps more importantly, in my hands-on time with the Rift I feel that Oculus has nailed the head tracking and latency aspects. There's no disconnect that I could feel between my motions and what was rendered, and that makes the entire experience very convincing and enjoyable, not to mention motion sickness-free. Similarly, for their retail product Oculus has finally come up with a fitting mechanism that is suitable for even my big head, which makes me confident that it should fit almost any head. The overall usability of a VR headset is poor without a good fit, so the importance of finally having so much flexibility in fitting can't be overstated.
  • Apple Releases iOS 9.3 Beta 7 - Apple has released iOS 9.3 Beta 7 for both developers and public testers. iOS 9.3's major features include Night Shift to help with sleep issues and multi-user login for education accounts. Several apps are slated for new functionality, too, such as Apple News, which gains landscape view on the iPhone as well as faster updates and personalized recommendations. The Apple Health app gains a new activity view, and Apple Notes adds password protection for individual entries. Apple has been testing iOS 9.3 along with betas for watchOS 2.2, tvOS 9.2, and Mac OS X 10.11.4. Apple has an event scheduled for March 21, which means today's iOS 9.3 beta is likely to be the last ahead of iOS 9.3's general release. Apple didn't call out specific updates to the latest beta. It can be downloaded over the air for registered developers and public testers.
  • iPhone SE to combine 5s-like design with 6s-like specs - 9To5Mac has come up with a new report that reveals almost everything about the upcoming iPhone SE. Unsurprisingly, the report re-confirms that the iPhone SE will feature a design that is almost identical to the iPhone 5s. However, on the inside, things will be very different. The iPhone SE will be powered by the Apple A9 chipset with the M9 co-processor for “Hey Siri” support, will be compatible with Apple Pay, and offer Wi-Fi and cellular data speeds. On the camera front, the iPhone SE will feature the same camera setup as the iPhone 6s. That means you’re going to get a 12MP iSight camera at the back with support 4K video capture as well as Live Photos. According to the report, the new 4-inch iPhone will be available in two storage options  - 16GB and 64GB. Three color options will be on offer - Space Gray, Rose Gold, and Silver. A $450 starting price has been tipped as well, which suggests the iPhone SE will cost the same as a new iPhone 5s.
  • Bitcoin issuers face 7 years in Russia's jails - Russian news agency Interfax reports that Russia's Ministry of Finance has prepared an amendment to a law which could see issuers of surrogate currencies, such as Bitcoin, face up to four years in jail. Executives of banks and financial service companies would face harsher punishment, up to seven years in prison. Additionally, executives who would break this law would face restrictions on holding similar jobs in the future. Previously, the bill was much softer on offenders, in which those releasing surrogate currencies would face one year of "corrective labour". Organised groups would face two years. Aside from the prison sentences, the new amendment also includes fines for those issuing a money surrogate: fines range from 500,000 rubles (£5,000) to 1,000,000 rubles (£10,000). Execs face fines of up to 2,500,000 rubles (£25,000).

  • Sprint Claims to Reach 300Mbps Downloads with Galaxy S7 - Sprint has said it was able to achieve peak LTE speeds reaching 300Mbps on the downlink with the Samsung Galaxy S7. The phone, says Sprint, is among the first to support three-channel carrier aggregation, a feature in LTE-Advanced. In its lab, Sprint put together three 20 MHz channels in the 2.5 GHz band to push peak speeds in the S7 to 300Mbps. Sprint says the same setup can deliver 200Mbps in real-world situations. The carrier has already deployed two-channel carrier aggregation in its 2.5 GHz spectrum, delivering peak speeds of 100Mbps in more than 150 markets around the U.S. Sprint says it holds 160 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum in a large number of top U.S. markets, which should allow it to offer three-channel carrier aggregation as part of its LTE Plus Network upgrade. Sprint is working to trim costs across the board. It recently cut its headcount and is hoping to reduce the costs associated with leasing tower space. Sprint didn't say how it will deploy its LTE Plus upgrade while also saving costs.
  • Skype for Web Now Supports Calling Mobile Phones - Microsoft has improved the browser-based version of Skype with new several tools. To start, users can now call mobile phones and landlines from the web, including international numbers (Skype credit required). The web client also gains the ability to view YouTube videos directly in message threads, rather than force users to open a separate window. YouTube support includes standard playback controls, such as volume and play/pause. Skype for web makes it easier to invite non-Skype users to join conversations with an improved sharing tool, and new notifications mean web users won't miss incoming messages or calls when signed in. Skype for the web is free to use and is compatible with mobile Skype apps, such as those for Android, iOS, and Windows machines.

AMD Crimson Edition 16.3.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 12:36 PM CET - Mar,19 2016 - Post a comment
Following last week's release of Radeon Software 16.3 Hotfix, AMD is back again with a quick update to their driver set, bringing it to 16.3.1 Hotfix. The list of resolved issues this week is brief compared to the last few months of updates. Among the resolved issues is a problem where installed and played games were not showing up in the Radeon Settings 'Gaming' tab. Meanwhile a hang in Unreal Engine 4 games has been fixed, along with issues installing the Radeon Software driver set via command line. Lastly, AMD notes that DirectX 12 applications are no longer locked to the refresh rate of the display. Alongside these fixes there is also driver support for the new Need for Speed, and a Crossfire profile update for Hitman.

Radeon Pro Duo Announced - tech
(hx) 09:41 AM CET - Mar,15 2016 - Post a comment
With GDC happening this week, AMD took the opportunity to announce the Radeon Pro Duo, a dual Fiji GPU graphics card. If you happen to have $1499 USD to spare, the Radeon Pro Duo is now their top-of-the-line graphics card. The Radeon Pro Duo is capable of an incredible 16 TFLOPS of compute performance. With this expensive graphics card, it's water-cooled similar to the Radeon R9 Fury X. The Radeon Pro Duo will begin shipping in early Q2'16 at $1499. While most Linux gamers/enthusiasts don't have that much to spend anyways on a complete system let alone a graphics card, the Radeon Pro Duo likely won't be worthwhile under Linux.

It is primarily a piece of kit for VR developers - so more of a prosumer segment bridging consumer and professional segments. I don't think the card is being marketed for gamers (although it wouldn't surprise me if AIB's like Asus took the opportunity to do so in some guise), more a compact single solution for a one-GPU-per- VR screen developer. Price wise, it wouldn't stack up well against two FuryX/Fury/Nano in a gaming comparison, but I'm betting gamers won't be the primary marketing focus.
AMD Demos Polaris Radeon & Vega To Use HBM2 - tech
(hx) 09:28 AM CET - Mar,15 2016 - Post a comment
AMD have finally shown off a public demonstration using the new hitman on DirectX 12 of their upcoming lineup of the radeon Polaris graphics cards. Running at 1440P, Hitman was demoed on Polaris 10 GPU.

AMD have also formally announced the radeon pro duo line up of graphics cards, two fury gpus on the same board, but with many of the features of their firepro lineup.

It would appear that AMD's roadmap shows off the radeon Vega lineup of graphics cards released in 2017 which will debut HBM2, with Navi to see a 2018 release. It's unknown what type of memory Radeon navi will use, only that will be next generation (possibly HBM3 or similar).

  • AMD XConnect external GPU technology for Thunderbolt 3 - AMD XConnect technology is a new feature of the Radeon Software 16.2.2 (or later) graphics driver that makes it easier than ever to connect and use an external Radeon graphics card. External Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosures configured with Radeon R9 300, Fury or Nano Series GPUs can easily connect to a compatible ultrathin or 2-in-1 notebook. Best of all, a setup configured with AMD XConnect technology and external Radeon graphics can be connected or disconnected at any time, just like a USB flash drive-a first for external GPUs
  • The Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge Review, Part 1 -  For some time now, Samsung has been the dominant player in the Android space, especially at the high end of the market. From the Galaxy S2 onwards, Samsung has been able to ride the wave of the smartphone industry’s growth without much disruption. Samsung has also shown a pretty impressive ability to adapt to changes in the market as seen by their dramatic departure in materials from the Galaxy S5 generation to the Galaxy S6 generation. While the Galaxy S6 was ultimately one of the best phones you could get that year, at least a few design decisions like the loss of removable battery and microSD slot were generally considered to be a step back relative to previous devices.
  • Apple confirms March 21 event, new 4-inch iPhone expected - Apple has confirmed that it will be holding its spring event this year on March 21. The star of the show on March 21 is expected to be the long awaited 4-inch iPhone model, expected to be dubbed the iPhone SE. According to rumors, the iPhone SE will be powered by the latest Apple A9 chipset and could feature an updated 8MP or even a 12MP resolution iSight camera at the back. A new iPad Pro variant is likely to be introduced at the event as well, sporting a smaller 9.7” display. In terms of specs, the smaller iPad Pro model is expected to retain most of the features of its older and bigger sibling, with only a few features differentiating the two models. In addition to the two key hardware announcements, Apple is likely to announce details on new software and introduce some new bands for the Apple Watch.
  • Google Drops Project Fi Invites, Drops Nexus 5X Price - Google today nixed the invite system it used for Project Fi and opened the MVNO service up to everyone. Project Fi relies on WiFi and cellular access from Sprint and T-Mobile to provide coverage around the U.S. Its software is able to dynamically jump from network to network in order to provide the best-possible speeds and service. Project Fi is novel in that it only charges people for the actual amount of data used each month, rather than for large buckets. Google says the first 10 months of the project have gone well and it is ready to move into the next phase. For the next month, anyone who activates Project Fi will be able to purchase the Nexus 5X handset from LG for $199.99. The phone's normal price is $349.99. Project Fi is only available to Nexus smartphones, including the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P. Basic service costs $20 per month, plus $10 per 1 GB of cellular data. Google refunds users for the unused portion of data each month.

Google's Eddystone beacons broadcast content, such as URLs, to Android devices within range. Chrome can interact with those beacons and the content they offer. TechNews - Is your system ready for VR? - tech
(hx) 11:42 AM CET - Mar,05 2016 - Post a comment / read (9)
If you're the type of gamer who likes to play the newest games, investing in virtual reality is a no-brainer. Oculus recommends at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 to accompany an Intel Core i5-4590 and 8 GB of RAM, while HTC recommends very similar specs (and slightly less RAM) to run the Vive. Considering both VR headsets essentially require gamers to run their favorite titles at 1440p resolutions with frame rates exceeding 90 for smooth, stutter free gameplay, having a PC more powerful than those listed above is a good idea.  Is your system ready for VR?

  • Google Testing Hands Free Mobile Payments - Google today announced a new pilot program that will allow people to pay for goods and services without taking their phone out of their pocket. Hands Free Payments relies on location data, WiFi, Bluetooth beacons, and other sensors to detect nearby participating stores. Users need only say "I'll pay with Google" to the cashier, who confirms shoppers' identity with their initials and profile photo. Google is also testing in-store, camera-based visual identification methods for automatic verification. Google says all images captured by the Hands Free in-store camera are deleted as soon as the transaction concludes and cannot be accessed by the retailer nor even Google. Hands Free does not share full credit card numbers with the retailer and stores payment details securely. Transactions can only be completed when the phone is in or near the store. The service provides instant notifications after every purchase for verification, and can alert users to unusual activity. Transactions deemed suspicious won't be approved. The Hands Free app can be used on any Android device running 4.2 Jelly Bean and up, and the iPhone 4s and up. An Android Pay account is not required, but Android Pay users can associate the same credit/debit card with their Hands Free account if they wish. Hands Free Payments are being tested in a very limited pilot program in the South Bay, near Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. McDonalds and Papa Johns are participating in the pilot, along with some local retailers. Google didn't say how long the pilot will last, nor when it might expand to other retailers and regions. The Hands Free app is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
  • Sprint Brings Back Two-Year Contracts - With A Catch - Sprint has reversed its position on contracts and starting today began offering them again as an option to customers purchasing new equipment. Sprint customers can pay full price for phones, lease them, break payments up over time, or sign a two-year contract to purchase phones at subsidized prices. The company nixed the contract offering only a month ago. "We listened to our customers and are giving them more choices to get their new device," said a Sprint spokesperson to FierceWireless. "Sprint is the only carrier to offer the most choices to obtain a new device - lease, installment bill, two-year contract or pay full retail price." AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless have largely given up the idea of using contract pricing to lure in customers. There is, however, a big catch for customers who choose to sign a contract with Sprint. The cost of the service plan and device payments will be approximately $150 more than if the device is financed (without a contract) or purchased outright. For example, the 16 GB iPhone 6s costs $649. If paid for in full and then added to a 3GB monthly plan, the total of payments over two years at $50 per month comes to $1,849 before taxes and fees. If customers purchase the same phone with a two-year contract, they'll have to pay $199.99 up front followed by $75/mo for 24 months for the same 3 GB plan. The total in payments through the contract route totals $1,999 before taxes and fees. The total dollar amount by which contract purchasing exceeds paying in full or financing varies by handset and contract terms - but is generally at least $110 more expensive over two years.
  • Scientists achieve 100% efficiency for water-splitting half-reaction  - Splitting water is a two-step process, and in a new study, researchers have performed one of these steps (reduction) with 100% efficiency. The results shatter the previous record of 60% for hydrogen production with visible light, and emphasize that future research should focus on the other step (oxidation) in order to realize practical overall water splitting. The main application of splitting water into its components of oxygen and hydrogen is that the hydrogen can then be used to deliver energy to fuel cells for powering vehicles and electronic devices. The researchers, Philip Kalisman, Yifat Nakibli, and Lilac Amirav at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, have published a paper on the perfect efficiency for the water reduction half-reaction in a recent issue of Nano Letters.

  • Apple Seeks Public Dialog On Security - Apple CEO Tim Cook has reached out to Apple employees and consumers alike to further discuss the company's stance on encryption and the government's recent request to help it unlock an iPhone. In an email sent to employees and a Q&A published on Apple's web site, Cook reiterated his beliefs that the issue is much larger than a single phone — no matter the details of this particular case. "Some advocates of the government's order want us to roll back data protections to iOS 7, which we released in September 2013. Starting with iOS 8, we began encrypting data in a way that not even the iPhone itself can read without the user's passcode, so if it is lost or stolen, our personal data, conversations, financial and health information are far more secure. We all know that turning back the clock on that progress would be a terrible idea." The government wants Apple to create a new version of iOS that can be used to allow a brute-force attack of the iPhone in question to unlock it. Cook contends the tool, if successful, wouldn't be limited to this specific phone, and in fact, Apple has already received hundreds of similar requests from local law enforcement agencies since the FBI's request became public. Creating this tool "would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks," says Cook. "We strongly believe the only way to guarantee that such a powerful tool isn't abused and doesn't fall into the wrong hands is to never create it." To that end, Apple is calling on Congress to create some sort of commission to "discuss the implications for law enforcement, national security, privacy, and personal freedoms. Apple would gladly participate in such an effort." Apple has been ordered to unlock the phone, but is disobeying the order. A hearing over the matter has been scheduled for March 22.
  • FBI Director Admits Apple Encryption Case Could Set Legal Precedent - Putting the whole issue of legal precedent aside for a moment, why doesn't the FBI just have someone else crack the phone? John McAfee (speaking of crack) said he could do it, so why not use him or another 3rd party? The director of the FBI has conceded that future judges will look to his battle with Apple as a precedent for law enforcement access to locked or encrypted mobile devices, the first time the government has conceded that the implications of the case stretch beyond an investigation into the San Bernardino terrorist attacks.
  • Microsoft Adds Fingerprint Support to Android Lock Screen - Microsoft recently updated its Next Lock Screen app for Android devices with support for fingerprint readers. Now, people who own Android handsets that are equipped with fingerprint sensors can use the fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone and bypass the Next Lock Screen. The app also gains smart contacts, which learns and displays the names of people called or texted. The smart lock feature lets users set rules for whether or not a passcode is needed when at home or work. The update also restores location-based wallpapers and fixes bugs. Microsoft's Next Lock Screen for Android is free to download from the Google Play Store.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.2 - tech
(hx) 05:27 PM CET - Feb,25 2016 - Post a comment
AMD has launched their latest Crimson Edition 16.2 driver which brings a range of performance increases in AAA titles along with bug fixes. The Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.2 drivers specifically eye the Rise of the Tomb Raider and Ashes of The Singularity releases where bulk of the performance enhancements would be centered around.
The two key titles which will be getting major performance and quality improvements from the Crimson Edition 16.2 drivers are Ashes of the Singularity and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Since launch, NVIDIA had a upper hand in Rise of the Tomb Raider with their GeForce cards which dominated the benchmarks. The game was bundled with GeForce 900 series cards and the performance was impacted on Radeon cards mostly due to non-availability of game ready drivers. With the latest 16.2 drivers, Radeon users will see a good boost in performance with enhanced quality that will put them on par with their GeForce counter parts.

The second title to see a massive performance increase is not a fully released game (yet) but the second benchmark to Stardock's Ashes of the Singularity title which is currently in BETA state. The title is loaded with tons of DirectX 12 goodness and unlike Tomb Raider, AMD has had pretty good driver support for the title due to them working close with the developers compared to NVIDIA which have yet to issue a capable driver for the title. The second benchmark makes use of several performance improving techniques that’re featured in DirectX 12 API such as Asynchronous Compute, multi-GPU / Explicit multi-adapter support and multi-threaded command buffer Re-ordering. AMD has demonstrated really good performance in the DX12 benchmark as can be seen in our own analysis of the Beta.

Along side the performance increases, AMD also added CrossFire profiles for The Division and XCOM 2. Bug fixes were mainly focused for Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4 along with back-end tweaks. The 16.2 drivers will work with all GCN enabled product families which include AMD Radeon 300, AMD Radeon 200, AMD Radeon HD 8000 series, AMD Radeon HD 7000 series (desktop/mobile) cards and also Kaveri, Carrizo and Godavari APUs.

  • Intel says move to 10-nanometer chips still on track for 2017 - Intel posted a job listing on its website last month in which it mentioned that mass production of products using its 10-nanometer manufacturing technology would begin approximately two years from the date the listing was posted (January 21, 2016). This caught the attention of The Motley Fool's Ashraf Eassa who wrote a column on the matter. It was of particular interested because in mid-2015, Intel admitted that difficulties in the move to 10-nanometer had pushed the first round of consumer products based on the advanced manufacturing process back to the second half of 2017.
  • Revisiting The Google Pixel C - Better, But Not There Yet - The most significant improvement with the updated firmware from Google is the fix for broken touch input. I really cannot overstate just how broken touch is on the Pixel C with its original shipping firmware, and the updated version feels like a completely different device. It's honestly like moving from a resistive touch display to a modern capacitive touch display, and even then, one could argue that resistive touch displays only had some of the problems that the Pixel C initially had. I think it's safe to say that this issue with the Pixel C is completely resolved, and that's a huge step toward making it a tablet that is worthy of commanding its $500 price.
  • US Department of Defense orders upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft reports that the U.S. Department of Defense has ordered all its agencies to upgrade their existing Windows machines to Windows 10. That amounts to four million systems. The DoD has set an ambitious timeline of just one year for the transition.

  • New form of Android Malware that is spread via text messages - A  new form of Android malware has appeared in Europe that is being spread via SMS messages. Danish company Heimdal Security, which uncovered Mazar BOT, told the BBC that it has already spread to 100,000 devices in Denmark, although it's not clear how far it's reached beyond the county's borders. The SMS messages in question contain a link, claiming to be a multimedia message, that when clicked will prompt users to download a malicious Android application package (APK) called ‘MMS Message.'

  • Smart phone sales for 2015 - Gartner's figures for global smart phone sales were released today and one thing is clear: it doesn't look good for Windows phones. When we last heard from Gartner, it was in the middle of November, 2015 and Windows Phone was down to 1.7% of sales. Today, Gartners reports show that just 1.1% of handsets sold in the fourth quarter of 2015 had Windows installed on them. FYI, Android increased 16.6 percent.
  • Apple to Start Accepting Android Phones As Trade-Ins - Apple is making it easier to buy new iPhones by expanding the selection of phones it will accept as trade-ins. The new program is called Trade Up With Installments and lets people hand over an old phone when buying a new iPhone. Apple will apply the credit of the old phone toward the cost of a new phone and break up the payments for the new iPhone over a 24-month period. Apple will give $100 in credit for an iPhone 4 or 4s, $200 for an iPhone 5, 5s, or 5c, $300 for an iPhone 6, or $350 for an iPhone 6s, depending on the condition of the the trade. Apple will give between $100 and $300 in credit for Android and Windows handsets that are traded in. The 24-month financing plan includes Apple Care+ ($129). People interested in upgrading need to visit Apple Stores to earn credit toward a new iPhone. Trade Up With Installments kicks off today.
  • Apple updates iOS to allow users with Error 53 to restore their - A few weeks ago, iPhone users started reporting issues with a mysterious 'Error 53', a message that would render their iPhone useless. As it turned out, Error 53 was caused when third party repair shops replaced, or repaired the TouchID sensor. Apple has released an update that will allow users that have received the error to restore their device through iTunes. Note that this update will not re-enable TouchID.
  • Judge Asks Apple to Help Unlock iPhone, Apple Balks - A U.S. judge has ordered Apple to help the FBI unlock the iPhone owned by the shooters in the terrorist attack that took place Dec. 2 in San Bernardino, Calif. In a letter to customers, Cook said the FBI is essentially requesting a backdoor into iPhones, even if the agency says it will use the method only once on this specific device. Once created, others would be able use the backdoor to break into iPhones. Apple strongly believes consumers require and deserve encryption and protection from those who might exploit the treasure trove of data stored on their mobile device
  • US Gov to Force Apple to Unlock iPhone - The U.S. government has filed motions looking for a court order that would force Apple to help the FBI unlock an iPhone that belonged to the San Bernardino shooter. Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a letter published earlier this week, said the idea of breaking into the iPhone for the government was "chilling" and "unprecedented" and could lead to a backdoor that would imperil millions. The company has refused to unlock the device. Apple has lukewarm support from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter. It's not clear how soon the court order may be issued, nor how quickly Apple will be compelled to act.
  • Apple: We tried to help FBI but someone changed iCloud password - The auto reset was executed by a county information technology employee, according to a federal official. Apple executives say the iPhone was in the possession of the government when iCloud password was reset

  • Wireless Routers 101 -  Choosing a router can get complicated. You have tons of choices across a range of price points. You'll want to evaluate your needs and consider variables like the speed of your Internet connection, the devices you intend to connect and the features you anticipate using. My own personal recommendation would be to look for a minimum wireless rating of AC1200, USB connectivity and management through a smartphone app.
  • Apple Pushes Out New iOS, WatchOS, tvOS Betas - Apple has made several new beta operating system available to developers. First up is iOS 9.3 beta 3. Apple didn't spell out what's new in build 13E5200d, aside from performance tweaks. iOS 9.3's previously disclosed new features include richer tools for education, Night Shift to reduce eye strain, as well as new behaviors to Notes and Health. WatchOS 2.2 beta 3 updates the map app and makes it possible to pair the Apple Watch with more than a single iPhone. Last, tvOS 9.2 adds support for Bluetooth keyboards. The betas are available to developers to download starting today. Apple generally makes public betas available to consumers a day or two after it releases developer betas.
  • Don't set your iPhone's date to January 1, 1970! - A bug has been discovered that causes some recent iOS devices to be permanently bricked if the user changes the date to January 1st, 1970, and reboots. So please, don't try this at home, although it's hard to understand why anyone would want to
  • Check your Google security settings, get 2 GB of free Drive storage - There really aren't any catches to this one: if you check your Google account's security settings, Google will give you an extra 2 GB of free Google Drive storage to go on top of the 15 GB the service already offers for free. To claim the free 2 GB, the process of checking your account security is incredibly simple. Firstly, you head to your security settings, where Google will ask you to review your recovery information. If the information listed there is correct, you can proceed to checking the list of devices connected to your account, where you should remove anything that looks unfamiliar. The third step involves reviewing all the apps that have permission to access your Google account. Again, you'll want to remove anything that looks out of place or that you don't use anymore. After that, you have to check your app passwords, revoking anything that looks suspicious. And finally, you'll be asked to review any two-step verification settings if you have enabled this feature on your Google account. When you complete all the aforementioned steps, a small notice appears telling you that Google has added 2 GB of free Drive storage to your account to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2016. A quick check of Drive's storage information suggests this free 2 GB of space does not expire. If you want to claim your free 2 GB of storage, increasing the amount of free storage in your account to 17 GB, spend the two minutes to check your security settings before the promotion expires on February 18th.
  • Gmail to Call Out Insecure Emails - Google is hoping to protect Gmail users by making them more aware of secure and insecure messages. Moving forward, Gmail will display an open lock icon for Google Apps users who receive messages from email services that don't support an encrypted connection. The same applies when users are about to send an email through unprotected servers. Google says people sending messages between Google-hosted domains won't see the open lock icon because Gmail operates through secure servers. Further, if Google can't authenticate the sender of an email via Sender Policy Framework or DKIM, it will replace the sender's profile photo with a question mark. Google believes these visual clues will help people tread more carefully when opening and responding to emails. Google also suggests Gmail users take advantage of two-step verification, activate Data Loss Prevention, check and fine-tune spam settings, and enforce mobile device policies. These changes will role out to Google Apps users (business accounts) over the next few weeks.
  • Sprint Ups the Ante with $150 Unlimited Family Bundle - Sprint today announced a new promotion that will give a family of four unlimited talk, text, and data for $150 per month. A single line for the unlimited plan costs $75 per month. Two lines cost $120 per month, three lines cost $150, four lines cost $150 (fourth is free), and lines five through 10 cost $30 each. In addition to the calling, messaging, and LTE 4G access, the unlimited plan includes 3 GB of mobile hotspot and Sprint Global Roaming with unlimited 2G data and text messaging in select countries. Sprint's new unlimited pricing will be available beginning February 12 for a limited time. Sprint also extended its 50% rate plan promotion for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless customers through March 31.
  • Sprint Offering $200 In Credit for Trade-Ins - Sprint today is kicking off a limited promotion that will reward new and existing customers with $200 in credit towards a new device when they trade in a working smartphone. The credit can be applied to the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 5. Sprint says the $200 credit drops the monthly lease cost of the GS6 to $9.76 per month and the Note 5 to $16.67 per month. The $200 trade-in credit is available to shoppers at Sprint's retail stores starting today, and will be available online and via phone by the end of the week. Sprint says the device being traded in cannot be a lease, and existing customers must be upgrade-eligible to score the $200 trade-in credit. The offer can be combined with Sprint's current half-off rate plans to customers who switch from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon Wireless.

TechNews - Windows 10 is 'Recommended' Update - tech
(hx) 11:57 AM CET - Feb,06 2016 - Post a comment / read (9)
FYI, Microsoft quietly made its optional Windows 10 update for Windows 7 and 8.1 users into a ''recommended'' update, and your system may automatically upgrade to the new operating system depending on your Windows Update settings.  The good news is that the Windows 10 installation will not finalize without first prompting the user. However, some home users may want to double check what they are clicking when the notification pops up to avoid an unintentional operating system upgrade. Home users can disable recommended updates in the Windows Update settings, and Enterprise IT administrators can disable the upgrade using Group Policy settings or by using the DisableUpgrade registrykey. In a worst-case scenario where your PC is updated to the new OS but you don't want it, the process can be rolled back for up to 31 days after the upgrade. (Unfortunately, it's not so painless process as they claim).  The change from "optional" to "recommended" may come off as an aggressive move from Microsoft, with the perceived pressure of upgrading to Windows 10 coming from the company's mission to update one billion devices to the new OS this year -- an ambitious goal that some contest may make the company eventually force users into an unwanted OS upgrade.

Microsoft provides instructions for disabling the Windows 10 upgrade, but they require hacking around in the Windows registry or Group Policy, ensuring most Windows users won’t feel comfortable doing this. The third-party GWX Control Panel app has been the best way to configure this, but it has to regularly update because Microsoft keeps finding ways around it
  • iPad Air 3 May Have 4K Panel And 4GB RAM - Apple is expected to unveil new models of its iPad Air in March 2016 and production will start in the second quarter, with General Interface Solution and TPK Holding to supply touch panels, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers. The new 9.7-inch device will reportedly come equipped with a 4K resolution panel and up to 4GB in RAM, in addition to improved battery life. Apple believes that despite a decline in the tablet market and increased competition globally, it still has a base of dedicated customers who are looking to upgrade their iPads, the makers noted.
  • Apple Accepting Broken iPhones As Trade-Ins - Apple will now accept damaged iPhones as trade-ins when people wish to upgrade to a new iPhone. Previously, Apple only accepted working iPhones as trade-ins, but will now take in iPhones with "damaged displays, cameras, and buttons within reason." Apple will credit people who turn in a damaged iPhone 5s with $50. The company will credit people $200 for a broken iPhone 6 and $250 for a broken iPhone 6 Plus. Phones that don't have cracked screens or broken buttons may be worth up to $350. Apple hopes the change in policy will convince people holding onto older, possibly busted devices to upgrade. The new Apple trade-in policy is available at Apple's retail stores, but not online.

  • Dutch police training eagles to take down rogue drones - Using these birds of prey to capture drones is part of a new trial by the Dutch police in collaboration with Danish raptor training firm Guard from Above. Once an eagle is trained to recognize a drone, it can then grab one from the sky and carry it to safety. The handlers then trade the drone for treat to reward the eagle. Drone-killing eagles is just one solution the police force is testing against illegal UAV activity. They are also trialing a variety of other physical and electronic methods, including using a net, but the biggest advantage the birds have is that they can carry a drone away from a crowd, meaning there's little risk of an incapacitated UAV falling and injuring someone below.
  • Google, BlackBerry Make February Security Patch Available - Google is now delivering a security patch to Nexus smartphones and tablets. The patch resolves 10 issues, of which five are considered to be critical. The two most severe problems could allow for remote code execution through a WiFi driver and a media server. Google found the vulnerabilities in January and alerted its hardware partners to the problems. The security patch is available via factory images from Google's developer web site, but the company will push the update out over the air in the days ahead. Google plans to provide a new version of Android 6 Marshmallow to the Android Open Source Project in a day or two. Google says to the best of its knowledge that the security holes were not exploited. BlackBerry, too, is pushing the February security patch to the BlackBerry Priv smartphone. Other phone makers are expected to deliver the patch in the weeks ahead.

U.S. Mobile offers a wide assortment of service plans that can be customized to suit individual budgets. The Xiaomi and Meizu phone are available directly from U.S. Mobile's web site, where it sells an assortment of competing smartphones. "U.S. consumers have traditionally had to compromise to afford incredible devices," said Ahmed Khattak, founder and CEO of US Mobile. "Now, with the launch of our marketplace, we are thrilled to offer complete range of exceptional smartphones for low monthly payments and to give our customers access to exceptional phones otherwise not available in the U.S."

What was the last piece of PC hardware you bought? :P FYI, the latest hardware I bought was the MSI GeForce GTX 970 OC, 4GB GDDR5 (256 Bit), HDMI, 2xDVI graphic card.
  • Sony's new USB 3.1 flash drives with dual Type-C and Type-A - Sony has announced a new range of flash drives that include support for Type-C, as well as for the Type-A port found on older devices. The new USB 3.1 Gen1 CA1-series drives will be offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB sizes. Sony says that they feature "dual connectors", making them "compatible with Windows, Macintosh, Android and Chromebook devices equipped with Type-C and Type-A ports". It adds that the drives combine "up to 130MB/s transfer speed (read) with durability and design", and have a "slim and tiny" form factor with metallic bodywork. Annoyingly, Sony stopped short of revealing how much the new drives will cost, but it did say that they'll be available to buy sometime next month.
  • Tor Browser 5.5 Is Released - Tor Browser 5.5, the first stable release in the 5.5 series, is now available from the Tor Browser Project page and also from our distribution directory. This release features important security updates to Firefox. On the privacy front we finally provide a defense against font enumeration attacks which we developed over the last weeks and months. While there is still room for improvement, it closes an important gap in our fingerprinting defenses. Additionally, we isolate Shared Workers to the first-party domain now and further improved our keyboard fingerprinting defense.
  • Watch out for this web link that crashes Safari - If you run into a link to a website called crashsafari.com, it's probably best not to click on it. As the website's name advertises, visiting the site crashes the Safari web browser on both desktop and mobile devices, and it's currently being shared across social media by a number of pranskters. The website works by running JavaScript code that fill the address bar with an infinite series of numbers. Safari doesn't handle this particularly well, and will freeze on Mac, requiring you to force quit the browser. The website affects mobile devices running iOS as well, causing the browser to crash and, in some cases, the device to reboot.
  • Cortana can now scan your e-mail to remind you about commitments - Microsoft has said it is adding new features to Cortana that will help people better manage their schedules. To start, Cortana will be more proactive with respect to reminders. Microsoft says people often make promises or commitments to one another via email, but then fail to follow through for various reasons (most often forgetfulness). Using tools from Microsoft Research, Cortana is able to scan email messages for promises/commitments and then automatically add reminders to help people keep track of those commitments. Microsoft also took steps to improve Cortana's ability to help manage calendar appointments. Microsoft says Cortana is able to see individuals' unique work styles, such as when they generally like to take meetings. Now, when meeting requests arrive that fall outside of preferred meeting windows, Cortana will send alerts so the recipient can take the appropriate action, whether it be to reschedule the request or set an alarm. Cortana's new powers will reach Windows Insiders on Windows 10 PCs first and expand to others Windows 10 devices and users over time.
  • Apple Rolls Out New iOS, WatchOS, tvOS Betas - Apple has pushed out a handful of new beta releases. Developers can now download iOS 9.3 beta 2, watchOS 2.2 beta 2, and tvOS beta 9.2. Each beta has bug fixes and performance upgrades when compared to prior versions. Apple will likely make new consumer versions of the betas available shortly. Apple today also released tvOS 9.1.1 for consumers, which adds Apple's newer podcast app to the platform.
  • Banks Prepping Smartphone-Enabled ATMs - JPMorgan Chase and other banks are readying next-generation ATMs that will allow people to withdraw funds using their smartphone. Chase said the first series of new ATMs will grant access to cash through the Chase mobile app, and will require a code. The second series of new ATMs will support NFC, allowing smartphone owners to tap their handsets to ATMs in order to initiate transactions. These machines will continue to support ATM cards, but will offer mobile access as an option.
  • Facebook Expands Live Video to All US iPhone Owners - Facebook has increased the set of people able to make use of its live video feature to all iPhone owners in the U.S. Facebook first tested the service with celebrities and public figures before expanding to a small set of iPhone users back in December. Similar to Twitter's Periscope app, live video from Facebook lets people broadcast live video to their friends. Broadcasters see the number of viewers and their names, and a real-time stream of comments. Live broadcasts are automatically saved to users' timelines where they can be kept or deleted. People will be able to see live videos in their News Feed, but may also subscribe to the feeds of their favorite broadcasters. Facebook will send alerts to let people know when broadcasters go live. Facebook said it expects to expand live video to more countries shortly, but hasn't said when Android devices will have access to the feature
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) specs leaked - A few more details regarding the upcoming Samsung J7 (2016) mid-ranger have surfaced on the web today, courtesy of the device's kernel code. While the display size hasn't exactly been specified, the leak does confirm that the handset is going to feature a 1080p resolution display. However, as revealed in the recent GFXBench listing, the smartphone will most likely launch with a 5.5-inch sized display, which seems to be a pretty popular size with most new mid-rangers. The smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm's msm8952 SoC (Snapdragon 617) according to the new leak, contradicting the GFXBench listing that pointed to a Snapdragon 650 SoC under its hood. More interestingly, the latest leak reveals the Galaxy J7 (2016) will come with a fingerprint sensor and a pretty large 4,300mAh capacity battery. The latest leak suggesting Samsung's upcoming flagship can last more than 17 hours when playing video at maximum screen brightness. That's impressive for a 5.1-inch smartphone!
  • Samsung to Focus on Improving Smartphone Software - Samsung plans to boost the appeal of its smartphones by making changes to its software. "The company will focus on strengthening the competitiveness of its software, along with hardware, services and wearable products," said Samsung. It will also debut "an enhanced product mix with the introduction of new lineups, such as the Galaxy A series." Samsung plans to fight a stagnating market by reinforcing its leadership in the flagship space while also increasing shipments of mass market handsets to improve profitability. The company recently reported its fourth quarter earnings, which saw Samsung bring in revenue of $44 billion and record a net profit of $5.1 billion — a drop of 40% compared to the year-ago period. Samsung will continue to foster growth in is chip, panel, Smart Home, IoT, and home appliances businesses with new technology and expanded lineups.
  • Google to Bring Object Recognition to Phones - Google today said it has partnered with semiconductor startup Movidius to bring deep learning to smartphones. Movidius specializes in computer vision and helped with Google's Project Tango 3D mapping effort. Google's Android handsets are already able to identify objects in photos, but a network connection is required to send the images to Google's servers where the calculations take place. This new venture will see smartphones handle object recognition on their own, independent from Google's servers. Under its arrangement with Movidius, Google plans to purchase an unspecified number of the company's MA2450 chips along with the necessary software. "By working with Movidius, we're able to expand this technology beyond the data center and out into the real world, giving people the benefits of machine intelligence on their personal devices," said Google. Movidius' chief executive said it believes Google will add these features to smartphones sooner rather than later, but Google has not spelled out exactly how the MA2450 will be put to use in future handsets.
  • T-Mobile Again Accused of Fraud by Consumer Groups - A consumer watchdog group has filed a complaint with the FCC accusing T-Mobile of inflating customers' bills and misleading consumers through its advertising. The Change to Win Retail Initiative is asking the FCC to investigate T-Mobile's business practices. The organization alleges that T-Mobile enrolls customers in unwanted add-on services without permission, and that retail sales staff are pressured to tack on the add-ons (device insurance, unlimited data) in order to avoid poor performance reviews. The group complains that T-Mobile's "no contract" marketing is misleading, as service plans are paired with monthly device financing costs. Last, the group says T-Mobile misleads customers about its offer to repay ETFs, including "the method, timing and eligibility for reimbursement" of fees when switching from competing carriers. Change to Win's complaint follows a similar one lodged against the Uncarrier in December by several other consumer action groups. T-Mobile has not responded to the latest allegations, and the FCC has not publicly commented on Change to Win's complaint.

TechNews - GDDR5X Standard Finalized - tech
(hx) 10:11 PM CET - Jan,23 2016 - Post a comment
  • GDDR5X Standard Finalized by JEDEC: New Graphics Memory up to 14 Gbps - The GDDR5X SGRAM standard is based on the GDDR5 technology introduced in 2007 and first used in 2008. The GDDR5X standard brings three key improvements to the well-established GDDR5: it increases data-rates by up to a factor of two, it improves energy efficiency of high-end memory, and it defines new capacities of memory chips to enable denser memory configurations of add-in graphics boards or other devices. The key improvement of the GDDR5X standard compared to the predecessor is its all-new 16n prefetch architecture, which enables up to 512 bit (64 Bytes) per array read or write access. By contrast, the GDDR5 technology features 8n prefetch architecture and can read or write up to 256 bit (32 Bytes) of data per cycle. Doubled prefetch and increased data transfer rates are expected to double effective memory bandwidth of GDDR5X sub-systems. However, actual performance of graphics cards will depend not just on DRAM architecture and frequencies, but also on memory controllers and applications. Therefore, we will need to test actual hardware to find out actual real-world benefits of the new memory. Just like the predecessor, GDDR5X functions with two different clock types - a differential command clock (CK) to where address and command inputs are referenced, as well as a forwarded differential write clock (WCK) where read and write data are referenced to. WCK runs at a frequency that is two times higher than the CK. The data can be transmitted at double data rate (DDR) or quad data rate (QDR) relative to the differential write clock (WCK), depending whether 8n prefetch or 16n prefetch architecture and protocols are used. • Google paid Apple $1 billion to keep its search bar on the iPhone - Google Inc. is paying Apple Inc. a hefty fee to keep its search bar on the iPhone. Apple received $1 billion from its rival in 2014, according to a transcript of court proceedings from Oracle Corp.'s copyright lawsuit against Google. The search engine giant has an agreement with Apple that gives the iPhone maker a percentage of the revenue Google generates through the Apple device, an attorney for Oracle said at a Jan. 14 hearing in federal court. Rumors about how much Google pays Apple to be on the iPhone have circulated for years, but the companies have never publicly disclosed it. Kristin Huguet, a spokeswoman for Apple, and Google spokesman Aaron Stein both declined to comment on the information disclosed in court. The revenue-sharing agreement reveals the lengths Google must go to keep people using its search tool on mobile devices.
