TechNews - Note7's Iris Scanner Can Unlock Folders - tech
(hx) 01:04 PM CEST - Aug,07 2016 - Post a comment
  • The GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition & ASUS Strix GTX 1060 Review - Looking at generational comparisons then, of all of the Pascal cards launched so far, GTX 1060 offers the best performance gains for a single generation. Relative to GTX 960 it offers an 85% performance improvement at 1080p, and even excluding the outliers this is still an 80% gain. This isn't quite a 2x performance gain in a single generation, but it is close, and closer than either GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 got. So for current GTX 960 owners, the GTX 1060 offers a tantalizing performance upgrade right off the bat, and for the older GTX 760 and GTX 660 cards the differences are even greater, never mind the newer features NVIDIA has introduced since Kepler. The one catch to all of this is price. Relative to GTX 960 prices for this generation have gone up, from $199 for GTX 960 to $249 for GTX 1060

  • Windows Flaw Lets Hackers Steal Your Username And Password - The flaw works because Internet Explorer and Edge (on Windows 10) allow a user to access local network shares but don't fully block connections to remote shares. To exploit this, a hacker has to trick a user into visiting a specially rafted web page in Internet Explorer or Edge (on Windows 10) that points to their own network share. The browser will silently send usernames and hashed passwords to the network share, which can then be scooped up and stolen. If passwords are weak, they can be easily unscrambled and used to log in to user accounts. The flaw can also be triggered by sending a trick email to a victim who uses Microsoft Outlook.
  • Note7's Iris Scanner Can Unlock Folders and Web Sites - Samsung today announced Samsung Pass, an identification tool that combines the iris scanner and fingerprint reader to verify identity. Samsung Pass will be able to replace passwords for select apps. The tool allows Note7 owners to protect folders and web sites, for example, making them inaccessible unless unlocked via the owner's iris scan. Further, Samsung is offering the tool to bank app makers so they can add iris-based security to their own apps. Six banks will support Samsung Pass at launch. Samsung Pass is included with the Galaxy Note7, which goes on sale August 19.
  • Galaxy Note7 Borrows from S7 as Samsung Reworks Pen Features - The Note7's defining feature is the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED quad HD screen, which is twice as sensitive to pen input when compared to the Note 5. The S Pen stylus has been redesigned and now features a tip that is the same size as a standard ballpoint pen. The Note7's note-taking functions have been bundled together into a single application that opens when the pen is removed. People can use the Note7 to easily create GIFs by dragging the S Pen across (non-DRM) video as it plays. Many of the hardware elements were taken from the Galaxy S7. For example, the Note7 relies on a Snapdragon 820 processor (for the U.S. market) with 4 GB of RAM, and includes the same 12-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel selfie camera as the S7.
  • OnePlus 3 Review: The real 2016 flagship killer - The OnePlus 3 is a superb piece of hardware at an affordable price point. OnePlus has finally ditched their ludicrous invite system, too.

T-Mobile plans to sell all three colors (black, silver, blue) of the Note7. The device costs $849. Customers can pay the full price, or make a down payment of $70 and then monthly payments of $32.50 for 24 months. T-Mobile will begin accepting preorders at 12:01am August 3.
  • Verizon To Offer Rewards to Note7 Buyers - Verizon Wireless today announced customers who preorder the Samsung Galaxy Note7 or S7 Edge can snag a free Gear Fit2 fitness band or 256 GB memory card with their purchase. Verizon plans to sell other Note7-related accessories, such as the Gear VR, Gear 360 camera, and Gear IconX wireless headphones online and in stores beginning August 19. Verizon did not detail pricing information for its variant of the Note7.

  • Xiaomi unveils the Mi Notebook Air, a MacBook rival - The laptop comes in two sizes, a 12.5-inch model and a lighter, more powerful 13.3-inch version. The larger laptop ships with an Intel Core i5-6200U (base 2.3 GHz, turbo up to 2.7 GHz), a 256GB PCIe SSD with expandable SATA SSD slot, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, two USB 3.0 ports, a Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU, and a 40Wh battery that's said to last 9.5 hours
  • Here's how much play space you'll need for PlayStation VR - Sony is circulating a FAQ on the matter in which it recommends an area free and clear of any obstacles measuring 6’ x 10’ with the player seated in the middle, facing the PlayStation Camera. The height of the play area depends on the range captured by the camera, Sony says.
  • The Windows 10 free upgrade offer has ended, along with annoying nags - Microsoft has ended its free upgrade offer for Windows 10 as expected, approximately one year after the launch of the operating system. There's good news for users on Windows 7 and Windows 8 who didn't want to upgrade: Microsoft's persistent and annoying nags about upgrading have ceased. The prompts, and in some cases automatic upgrades to Windows 10, have been the subject of controversy, with some suggesting Microsoft has been too aggressive in its attempts to get people to upgrade. There's also bad news. For those that did want to upgrade but didn't get around to it, you'll now have to pay for a Windows 10 license. Microsoft is currently selling Windows 10 Home licenses for $120, while Windows 10 Pro is available for $200. OEM licenses are a little cheaper: $100 for Home, and $140 for Pro through Newegg.
  • MS faces new lawsuits over aggressive Windows 10 free upgrade push - On Friday, Microsoft will end its year-long Windows 10 free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. The company has faced widespread criticism over its approach to encouraging users to upgrade to its latest operating system, with many accusing the firm of making the process of declining that offer needlessly difficult and confusing. That criticism has spread around the world, including China, where there have been murmurs of possible legal action over Microsoft's upgrade efforts. Last month, a woman successfully sued Microsoft in California, winning $10,000 from the company after an automatic Windows 10 installation failed, causing issues for her PC. Microsoft did not admit any wrongdoing in that case, saying that it chose not to appeal to avoid further legal costs.  Now, Microsoft is facing further legal action over the handling of its free upgrade offer, both at home and abroad. As The Seattle Times reports, three men filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in the US District Court in Florida last week, claiming that the frequent 'Get Windows 10' upgrade prompts were in violation of laws regarding unsolicited electronic advertising, and potentially in breach of Federal Trade Commission regulations on 'deceptive and unfair practices'.  Microsoft is also being sued in Haifa, Israel, over allegations that Windows 10 was installed on PCs without their owners' consent, which the lawsuit argues is contrary to Israeli law.
  • Vulnerabilities in unencrypted wireless keyboards - Researchers at cybersecurity company Bastille have discovered a vulnerability. they call “Keysniffer” that allows an attacker to record keystrokes from 250 feet away.  he issue is with those wireless keyboards that transmit to a PC using an unencrypted, radio-based communications protocol rather than a Bluetooth connection. These cheaper transceiver chips (and other non-Bluetooth chips), which operate in the 2.4GHz ISM radio band, don't recieve Bluetooth's security updates that could fix the problem. The unencrypted transmissions mean that anyone within a 250-foot line-of-sight radius could grab your passwords, credit card details, and any other personal information you type using a cheap dongle bought online. Researchers say attackers could also inject their own keystrokes to install malware or perform other malicious acts on a victim's PC.
  • Apple iPhone 7's Retail Launch Reportedly Set For September 16th - Famed tech informant Evan Blass, known as @evleaks on Twitter, claims Apple is gearing up to release its iPhone 7 model to retail on the week of September 12, and most likely on that Friday, September 16. And to be clear, he's referring to when you can actually go out and purchase an iPhone 7 model, not the launch event, which will take place sometime beforehand. There's no reason not to believe Blass on this one. Even ignoring his more than favorable history with leaking inside information that later turns out to be accurate, including Apple leaks, the time frame generally fits with Apple's past launches. A September 16 release is slightly earlier than the September 25 retail launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but not by much. And because it's on a Friday, Apple will be kicking things off with a full weekend of sales.
  • BlackBerry DTEK50 Is A Secured, Rebadged Alcatel Idol 4 - BlackBerry today announced the DTEK50 smartphone, a slab-style handset that runs Android and features BlackBerry's signature communications and security software. BlackBerry says the DTEK50 features FIPS-2 hardware encryption, rapid security patching, secure boot process, and a hardened Android OS core. It includes Android for Work and Google Play for Work, as well as support for BlackBerry's full enterprise mobility management suite. Other features include BBM, BlackBerry Hub, the BlackBerry intelligent keyboard, and a customizable action key. The hardware is a rebadged version of the Alcatel Idol 4, which was announced earlier this year. The DTEK50 has a 5.2-inch full-HD LCD display, Snapdragon 617 processor with 3 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. It has a 13-megapixel camera main camera, 8-megapixel front camera, NFC, Cat 6 LTE, memory card slot, and Quick Charge 2.0. The phone ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The DTEK50 is available for preorder in the U.S. and other countries starting today for $299. BlackBerry said it will reveal shipping dates on a regional basis over the coming weeks.
  • Verizon Offering Bonus Data to Family Plan Subscribers - Verizon Wireless says families of four can get 16 GB of mobile data for $150 per month thanks to a new bonus data promotion. Verizon charges $70 per month for its 8 GB (or, L) plan. Families that subscribe to the L, XL, and XXL plans can score an extra 2 GB of data per line. The bonus data is only available when customers activate a new line or upgrade an existing phone. Verizon says the bonus data will be available to each line as long as it remains active on Verizon's network. Bonus data will not carry over month-to-month. The $150 monthly price includes the $70 data charge, plus $80 in line access fees for four smartphones. Taxes and handset payments are not included. Verizon says the bonus data promotion will be available for a limited time. Customers who activate new lines of service will be eligible to receive a Samsung Galaxy J3 V handset for free ($7 bill credit applied on a monthly basis for 24 months). Verizon will allow new customers up to five free J3 Vs per account.
  • Verizon to Buy Yahoo's Internet Business for $4.8B - Verizon has said that it has agreed to buy Yahoo's core internet and search businesses for $4.83 billion. Yahoo's properties will join AOL under Verizon's ownership, to be managed by Marni Walden, EVP and President of the Product Innovation and New Businesses organization at Verizon. Verizon has spent the last few years building up its media business units. Yahoo claims to have more than 1 billion active monthly users, of which 600 million are mobile. Combining Yahoo and AOL will give Verizon control over 25 established brands, including news sites, analytics engines, email services, and advertising platforms. The sale does not include Yahoo's stake in Alibaba, Yahoo Japan, and other entities. Post sale, the remaining business will be rebranded as it transforms into an investment company. Verizon and Yahoo expect the deal to close during the first quarter of 2017, pending regulatory and shareholder approval. Verizon Communications is the parent company of Verizon Wireless.

Android Auto and CarPlay allow smartphone users to access core functions, such as maps, music, messages, and the phone by using voice commands. Nvidia Will Pay GTX 970 Owners $30 - tech
(hx) 11:06 PM CEST - Jul,29 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
Back in early 2015, Nvidia was hit with a false advertising lawsuit over claims that the listed specs for its GTX970 video card were not accurate. Simply put, the 4GB of GDDR5 RAM the card was supposed to come with was actually 3.5GB of GDDR5 and a separate 500MB block running at a significantly slower speed. They will, however, have to pay $30 to each customer of the GTX 970 who can furnish a valid proof of purchase by December 21. More details on this will be sent out on October 23, and the Court will first have to approve the settlement on August 24- but as of right now, it seems that GTX 970 owners may find their wallets a bit more flush over the next few months.

TechNews - Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive - tech
(hx) 12:28 PM CEST - Jul,24 2016 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive designed for consumers - If you want an enormous drive that can hold an absolute ton of 4K videos, photos, and games, but you don't want to pay well over a thousand dollars, then you'll need a traditional hard disk drive. Step forward, Seagate, with the world's largest consumer hard drive: the 10TB Barracuda Pro. The $534.99 BarraCuda Pro is one of three new 10TB hard drives from Seagate's new Guardian series. The other two, the $469.99 IronWolf and $459.99 SkyHawk, are designed for NAS systems and video surveillance, respectively. The Pro, which is for ''everyday desktop computing and storage,'' spins at 7200 RPM, has a 220MB/s "sustained transfer rate" and comes with 256MB of cache. It also has a 300TB/year workload limit (in 24×7 operation) and a five-year warranty. There are non-Pro versions of the Barracuda available, which are presumably cheaper. These offer a slightly slower 210MB/s transfer rate, a 55TB/year workload limit, and a two-year warranty.
  • Official Unboxing Video Of Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition - Samsung is going for gold with its Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition handset, a specially themed Galaxy S7 Edge in celebration of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. • Gorilla Glass 5 Will Survive Drops From Up To 1.6 Meters - Reportedly debuting with the Galaxy Note 7, the newest generation of Gorilla Glass is expected to survive "1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time." It is probably still no match for beach sand, though.
  • Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 offers improved protection - Corning on Wednesday unveiled Gorilla Glass 5, the latest iteration of its popular cover glass that's said to further address a common concern among consumers: breakage from drops. Citing an 11-country survey, Corning points out that more than 85 percent of smartphone owners have drop their handset at least once a year with 55 percent saying they've done so a minimum of three times over the same period of time.  Indeed, cracked and shattered screens are a common occurrence in today's mobile-driven world. In the earlier days, scratches were just as much of an issue (if not more) although at this point, advancements in cover glass like those offered by Corning have largely eliminated the need for protective screen covers. Damage from drops, however, remains a pain point for the industry. In Corning's internal testing, the company said its Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80 percent of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters (between shoulder and waist height for the average person) onto rough surfaces.
  • Skype to Drop Support for Older Windows Phone Versions - Microsoft has said its Skype service will no longer be updated for Windows Phone 7 - 8.1 and older versions of Android and iOS. The company said it wants to "focus on the platforms of the future" which means it "must end support for some devices and operating systems." Skype will continue to support Windows 10 for Mobile, Windows 7, 8, XP, and Vista, Yosemite on Mac, iOS 8, and Android 4.03. Versions of Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android older than those named here will no longer be supported with updates. Skype says its service won't cease immediately on older platforms, but as the company continues to move Skype to the cloud, some features may become broken over time.
  • T-Mobile Gives Away Free Service in Brazil for Olympics - T-Mobile has said its postpaid customers will have access to free mobile data and calling in Brazil for the entire month of August in honor of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. T-Mobile customers will not have to take any action to enjoy free roaming in Brazil. Those who travel to Brazil will have unlimited high-seed data, unlimited calling to the U.S., and unlimited texting worldwide during their visit. T-Mobile said it is supplying the families of Olympic athletes with free T-Mobile service and a Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition handset through October. AT&T debuted its own roaming plan for Brazil earlier this summer, but it costs $50 to add to an existing service plan. About 100,000 Americans are expected to make the trip to Brazil to watch and participate in the games.
  • Verizon To Disconnect Data Hogs On Unlimited Data Plans - Are you one of those people that believe "unlimited" actually means "unlimited?" Artem Vaulin, a 30-year-old Ukranian living in Poland, is the suspected owner of the site and is facing extradition to the United States. He is facing two counts of criminal copyright infringement, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement. Caldwell stated that Vaulin is "charged with running today's most visited illegal file-sharing website, responsible for unlawfully distributing well over $1 billion of copyrighted materials."

A Bosnian demining charity, Posavina bez mina, issued its warning after hearing reports of Pokemon Go users venturing into risky areas. Players use their smartphones to hunt for cartoon monsters in the real world. At least 600 people have been killed in landmine accidents in Bosnia since the end of the war in 1995. About 120,000 mines remain undiscovered, a Bosnian demining group estimates. As the popularity of Pokemon Go has soared, there have been numerous incidents and accidents involving gamers
  • Opera to Sell Browser Business to Chinese Firms for $600M - Opera Software today scrapped plans to sell its entire business to a consortium of Chinese companies and will instead sell to them its consumer browser business. The original deal, valued at $1.2 billion, would have seen a handful of China-based investment firms take over all of Opera's businesses. The deal was unable to win government approval in Opera's home country of Sweden and had to be scrapped. Opera and the firms in question reworked the deal to sell off Opera's browser business for $600 million. Under the terms of the deal, the consortium will get Opera's mobile browser, including versions co-branded by mobile network operators; Opera's desktop browser, and performance and privacy apps; Opera's technology licensing business; and Opera's 29.09% ownership of a nHorizon. The Chinese investment firms will be allowed to use the Opera brand on these consumer-facing products. Opera Software will hold onto its Opera Mediaworks, Opera Apps & Games, and Opera TV businesses. Opera CEO Lars Boilesen will serve as CEO for both Opera and the divested unit until December 31, after which he will remain with Opera Software. Opera believes this new transaction will be complete by the end of the third quarter.
  • Japan's SoftBank to Buy UK's ARM for $32 Billion - SoftBank today announced plans to buy ARM Holdings for $32 billion. SoftBank runs one of Japan's largest wireless networks and is the parent company of Sprint in the U.S., while ARM designs and licenses the Cortex-branded mobile processors often found in today's smartphones and tablets. SoftBank's board of directors has fully approved the acquisition, which will be made in all cash. ARM's board and shareholders have yet to approve the deal. SoftBank believes its existing business relationships around the world will expand ARM's ability to license its technology in new markets. • T-Mobile Giving Away Galaxy On5, J7 to Families  -  T-Mobile is kicking off a new promotion that will let family plan subscribers score a free Samsung smartphone. The free phones are tied to specific service plans. Families who subscribe to T-Mobile's 6 GB Simple Choice plan pay $30 per month per line for service and can receive a free Samsung Galaxy On5 smartphone ($140 value). The $30 cost is applied to the first four members of the family, with additional lines costing $20 each per month. Similarly, families who subscribe to T-Mobile's 10 GB Simple Choice plan pay $40 per month per line for service and can receive a free Samsung Galaxy J7 smartphone ($240 value). The $40 cost is applied to the first four members of the family, with additional lines costing $30 each per month. In both cases, families can get up to 12 free phones. The price of the free phone is covered via monthly service credits over a period of two years. Once the two-year period is over, the customer owns the phone outright. Customers who cancel service before the two-year period is over will be responsible for the balance of the phone's cost. T-Mobile's back-to-school promotion begins July 13.
  • iPhone 7 design shown off in a new leaked video - The low resolution video comes from Dutch website TechTastic, who have a decent track record with leaks in the past. Most of the key design highlights seen in the leaked images of the iPhone 7 are also seen in the video, including the relocated antenna strips, protruding rear camera lens, and the same basic design that Apple has been using since 2014. However, unlike the leaked photos, the video does show the bottom of the handset as well. As rumored, the bottom does not include a 3.5mm headphone jack. That basically means you will no longer be able to directly connect your favorite pair of headphones with the new iPhone 7. Instead, you will need to use the Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adaptor.
  • One Year Later, Turing Phone Finally Ships - Turing Robotic Industries started taking preorders for its secure Turing Phone back in July 2015 with plans to ship in August. The company later promised to ship by December 2015, but it didn't. In February, Turing made a fundamental change to the device when it swapped the Android-based operating system for Jolla's SailfishOS 2.0. Now, a year after it first took preorders, Turing is shipping the Turing Phone. The phone itself is made of a liquid metal alloy that Turing claims is tougher than titanium and steel. The phone has a 5.5-inch full HD screen, quad-core Snapdragon processor with 3 GB of RAM, 13-megapixel camera, and s support for some U.S. LTE bands. The phone comes in five different models, the Turing Cardinal, Pharaoh, Beowulf, Dark Wyvern, and DW Glaedr. More so than the hardware, the Turing Phone is about providing secure communications, including encrypted messaging, email, and calls. Though it runs SailfishOS, the device will have access to the Google Play Store and Google Apps. Pricing starts at $610 for the standard model.
  • T-Mobile to Zero-Rate Pokemon for Weekly Tuesday Promo - T-Mobile says starting July 19 customers will be able to play Pokemon Go on their smartphone without impacting their monthly data allotment. T-Mobile is adding Pokemon Go to its T-Mobile Tuesday customer appreciation program. Customers will need to take action to get the free Pokemon data. First, customers need to download the T-Mobile Tuesdays app from the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store. Once signed in, customers can claim the free zero-rated use of Pokemon on T-Mobile Tuesdays July 19, July 26, August 2, and August 9. Once claimed, Pokemon usage will not touch customers' high-speed data plan through August 2017. The zero-rated Pokemon promo is only available to claim for the next four Tuesdays and goes away after August 9. Beyond the Pokemon promo, on Tuesday, July 19 T-Mobile customers can claim a free Lyft ride of up $15, a free Frosty at Wendy's, and 50% off select accessories. Last, T-Mobile says 250 people will win $100 in PokeCoins, and five people will win a Pokemon Go hunting trip for two anywhere in the U.S.
  • Mastercard Adds Retail Mobile Payments to Bank Apps - Android owners will soon be able to use their own mobile banking app - rather than Android Pay or Samsung Pay - to make tap-and-go payments in stores. Mastercard has expanded its Masterpass program to mobile devices so consumers can make contactless payments at various retailers. Mastercard first introduced Masterpass in 2014 to power in-app and online payments. Customer credit card data is stored in the cloud and tokenized for security, allowing people to make purchases with one click. Mastercard is extending Masterpass to its banking customers so those banks can add contactless payment capabilities to their own apps. Some of the first banks to support contactless payments include Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fifth Third Bank, KeyBank, People's United Bank, and Virginia Credit Union. Mastercard says 17 banks in total plan to add mobile payments to their apps in the near future. (One glaring omission at launch is JPMorgan Chase, which has so far shunned Android Pay. Chase is working on its own mobile payment service that has yet to launch.) Contactless, Masterpass payments will be available at more than 5 million retail locations across 77 countries that accept contactless payments via NFC. In the U.S., BJ's Wholesale Club will be among the first to support the bank-based mobile payment tool, with JetBlue, Saks, Lord and Taylor, Subway, and The Cheesecake Factory to follow shortly. It will be up to the individual supporting banks, such as Citi, to add contactless payments to their mobile apps.

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2 - tech
(hx) 11:21 AM CEST - Jul,13 2016 - Post a comment
Samsung on Tuesday sent out media invitations to its next Unpacked event where it will unveil the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung's current Note flagship, the Galaxy Note 5, arrived on August 21, 2015. Rumors leading up to this point suggested Samsung would skip the Galaxy Note 6 naming convention and jump right to the Note 7 in an effort to better align it with its other Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S7.

The Galaxy Note 7 will break cover on August 2 at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City. The event is scheduled to kick off at 11:00 a.m. EDT and will be livestreamed online. Samsung will host simultaneously launch events in Rio de Janeiro at noon local time and in London at 4:00 p.m. local time.

Speaking of Rio, Samsung last week announced the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition smartphone which it will give to each of the 12,500 Rio Olympians so they’ll be able to communicate with friends and family around the world during the Games.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.2 - tech
(hx) 10:59 AM CEST - Jul,12 2016 - Post a comment
AMD Monday released a small update to its Radeon Software Crimson Edition. Version 16.7.2 addresses a minor user-interface issue which causes the "Compatibility Mode" global setting, which is "off" by default, to remain in its user-set state when the "restore factory defaults" function is used. AMD in its change-log for the drivers states:
In the previous Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 driver the "Restore Factory Defaults" option under Preferences of Radeon Settings Software would not set the "Compatibility Mode" UI toggle to its default "OFF" value. This is fixed in the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.2 driver. The "Restore Factory Defaults" options resets all Radeon Settings to their factory default values.
The rest of its change-log appears to be identical to that of 16.7.1 drivers.

Samsung says the colors of the Olympic Rings will be featured widely throughout the user interface, such as the home/lock screens and notification bar. The device will also include Olympics-themed wallpapers. Samsung plans to give 12,500 of the devices to athletes along with the Gear IconX Bluetooth headphones. • The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Review: Part 2 - The Exynos 8890 variant is generally a step up in battery life, but the Snapdragon 820 variant is basically comparable to Exynos 7420 and by extension the Galaxy S6 and Note5. The Galaxy S7 edge is the only device that is an obvious step up in battery life for both variants, but this is through sheer battery capacity rather than any efficiency gains, as the Galaxy S7 edge ends up being a fairly heavy device in return for its great battery life. Charge time on both devices is competitive and in-line with expectations.
  • Samsung Shows Off First UFS Memory Cards - Samsung today announced a range of Universal Flash Storage memory cards meant for today's intense video applications. The UFS spec has been used for embedded memory modules since 2015, but this is the first time UFS has appeared in removable memory cards. UFS is a generational leap faster than the eMMC standard still used by the majority of devices today. Samsung's new UFS cards have a read speed of 530Mbps, which is five times faster than that of microSD cards. Samsung says this is fast enough to read an entire HD movie in about 10 seconds. Write speeds reach 170Mbps, which is about twice the speed of today's top microSD cards. Samsung says the fast read/write speeds will be ideal for dSLR cameras, drones, 3D/VR cameras, and action cameras. In order for the cards to achieve this performance two sets of connectors are needed, which allow for simultaneous reading and writing thanks to separate, dedicated paths for each action. The cards are similar is size to microSD cards, but have a different shape. The shape and double connector requirements make the UFS cards incompatible with the today's microSD slots. Samsung hasn't said if or when the company might introduce UFS cards to its smartphones or tablets. Moreover, the industry at large has not publicly agreed to transition from microSD to UFS. Samsung's UFS cards will be available in 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB capacities. Pricing and availability were not disclosed.

The app, available to Android and iOS smartphones, allows commuters to purchase single ride, round-trip, 10-trip, or weekly tickets. Commuters will need to activate individual tickets when boarding trains and make sure their phone is available for conductors to validate each ticket. The MTA says all tickets purchased through the eTix app will cost the same as those purchased via MTA ticketing machines, with no extra fees or charges. Refunds for tickets are available, but limited. eTix supports multiple tickets for families/groups, employer discounts, and receipts for business travel. Notably, eTix program tickets are not compatible with the NYC Transit (subway/bus) nor the NICE (bus) systems. The MTA's eTix app is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 - tech
(hx) 12:54 AM CEST - Jul,08 2016 - Post a comment
AMD has released a new driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 improves the Radeon RX 480's power distribution, lowering the current drawn from the PCIe bus.
Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 Highlights
      -  The Radeon RX 480’s power distribution has been improved for AMD reference boards, lowering the current drawn from the PCIe bus.
      -  A new "compatibility mode" UI toggle has been made available in the Global Settings menu of Radeon Settings. This option is designed to reduce total power with minimal performance impact if end users experience any further issues.  This toggle is "off" by default.
      -  Performance improvements for the Polaris architecture that yield performance uplifts in popular game titles of up to 3%  These optimizations are designed to improve the performance of the Radeon RX 480, and should substantially offset the performance impact for users who choose to activate the "compatibility" toggle.

Fixed Issues
       -  Radeon RX 480 limited PCI-E Bandwidth (PCI-E bandwidth is now at the correct speed on the Radeon RX 480) with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.
       - Minor stuttering no longer occurs in Grand Theft Auto V on Radeon RX 480 with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.
       - Video corruption will not be observed in DOOM with resolutions above 1920×1080 with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.
       - Hitman graphical corruption no longer occurs when the game is set to use DirectX®12 API and using zoom with weapons with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.
       - Display will not exhibit minor flicker on Radeon RX 480 when Freesync is enabled on a games launch or exit with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.
GeForce GTX 1060 Will Outperform GTX 980 - tech
(hx) 12:49 AM CEST - Jul,08 2016 - Post a comment
Nvidia announced that its GeForce GTX 1060 will launch later this month. The graphics card will take advantage of a new GPU core codenamed 'GP106' that is based on the company's new Pascal architecture. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 contains 1,280 CUDA cores with a reference boost clock speed of 1.7 GHz. Nvidia said that the GPU should be highly overclockable too, as overclocking lab tests performed by the company’s engineers have hit 2 GHz. The GPU core will have access to a total of 6 GB of GDDR5 clocked at 8 GHz. Nvidia didn’t tell us how wide the bus interface between the CPU and RAM is, but judging by the memory configuration, it’s likely 192-bits wide.

Nvidia claimed that its GeForce GTX 1060 will offer more performance than its outgoing GeForce GTX 980. At the same time, the GPU will consume considerably less power; Nvidia listed its power consumption at 120 W versus the 980’s 165 W TDP.

Microsoft has announced that it will offer a new abstraction layer for game developers to utilize for multiple GPU support in their DX12 games. This will allow developers to take advantage of multiple GPUs on a system with only minimal coding, something that will definitely please a lot of PC gamers.
The best news surrounded a new abstraction layer for game developers to utilize for multiple GPU support that MS would be releasing on GitHub very shortly. According to Microsoft, with only 'very little' code adjustment, DX12 titles should be able to implement basic multi-GPU support.

Yes, the layer will be available in this repo. We will also be publishing two mGPU sample projects along with it - one using the layer and one not using the layer. We're making some final tweaks and doing additional testing and plan to post it all soon.

AMD Radeon RX 480 Review Round-Up - tech
(hx) 05:35 PM CEST - Jun,30 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
Reviews of the AMD Radeon RX 480 are coming in from around the internet.

TechSpot: Those who can afford a $400+ graphics card and actually managed to hunt down a Pascal GPU will no doubt be pleased. For the rest of us, or rather for the majority of us, we have been waiting for something else, and for most that something could be AMD's Radeon RX 480.

Touted as the perfect VR solution for the masses, AMD is hoping to claw back a bit of market share with the new Radeon RX 480 which is aimed at the mainstream $200-250 segment, with other affordable Polaris GPUs expected to follow.

Whether on purpose or forcefully so, AMD is flipping how they used to release new GPUs, starting with mainstream products this time and working up to the high-end stuff. This might make sense given the company's current market share predicament, though I personally feel the move to the 14nm process has almost forced AMD into this strategy. The process may need to mature before larger, more complex GPUs can be created in sufficient volumes.

Then again, with over 80% of the PC gaming market dominated by $100 - $300 graphics cards, this is where the bulk of the market share is won and lost. AMD's first strike will be made at the $200 price range ($240 for the 8GB model) with the RX 480.

LegitReviews: The AMD Radeon RX 480 has 5.8 TFLOPS of compute performance thanks to having 36 Compute Units containing 2,304 stream processors based on the latest GCN 4.0 technology. AMD is using dynamic clock speeds on RX 480, so it has a base clock of 1120MHz and a peak boost clock of 1266MHz. The RX 480 comes with either 4GB or 8GB of GDDR5 memory running on a 256-bit wide memory interface at speeds starting out at 7Gbps for 224 GB/s of bandwidth all the way up to 8Gbps for 256 GB/s of bandwidth. From what we gather it is up to the board partner to use the memory that they want, so be sure to keep an eye on that if you are looking to purchase one of these cards.

When it comes to video outputs the AMD Radeon RX 480 has three DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 HDR outputs and one HDMI 2.0 video output. The rear grill also has been ported for optimal airflow to help the hot air from the Polaris 10 GPU to be exhausted out of the case. No DVI output is present on a sub $250 graphics card, so make sure you pick up an adapter if you need one for an older display.

HotHardware:In terms of its noise output, the Radeon RX 480 is usually quiet, but not silent. When idling, the card is inaudible over the other components in our test system (we test inside a mid-tower chassis with a Corsair HX series PSU and Arctic Cooling CPU air-cooler on the CPU). Under load though, the Radeon RX 480 was just a touch louder than the GeForce GTX 970. The pitch of the RX 480's fan was also more noticeable, according to our ears. With that said, we would still consider the RX 480 quiet overall -- it's just not the quietest of the bunch.
TechReport: The RX 480 8GB card we tested delivers a hair more performance potential than the GTX 970, but at a significantly lower price than the average going rate for that card on Newegg right now. We'd have to test the 4GB RX 480 to be truly sure of its value proposition, but just imagine a similar dot at $200, and AMD might have quite the hit on its hands.

Going by the measure of performance potential that average FPS provides, the RX 480 is sometimes slightly faster than the GTX 970, and it's sometimes a little slower. Those familiar with the long-running battle between the GeForce GTX 970 and the Radeon R9 290 should be getting a sense of deja vu right now. What's nice about the RX 480 is that AMD is extracting that kind of performance from a die that's roughly half as large as Hawaii with what is, in many respects, a smaller engine inside.

Indeed, what's most notable about the RX 480 compared to past Radeons of any price is its consistently smooth frame delivery. Where AMD's older cards have trailed the GeForce competition in delivering smooth gameplay—often by wide margins—the RX 480 chalks up a huge improvement in both our advanced 99th-percentile frame time and "badness" measures compared to the Radeon R9 380X. We're completely comfortable calling the RX 480 the equal of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970 in those regards. That's excellent progress from the red team, and we hope that whatever mojo is responsible for this turn-around works its way into every future AMD graphics card.

On the other hand, the RX 480's power consumption and noise figures aren't as rosy as we might have expected them to be. Our power consumption tests today aren't perfectly comparable to those in our older reviews, but one Radeon R9 290-powered system with a similar CPU and motherboard drew about 400W under load when we reviewed that graphics card as part of a larger test a while back. The Radeon RX 480 delivers similar performance to that card while shaving about 140W off the total power draw of our system. TR readers helpfully point out that using board power as a rough guide, the RX 480 is about 90% more efficient than the R9 290 before it, considering the performance we measured. Either way, that figure seems to fall short of the 2.8X performance-per-watt increase that AMD often touted with Polaris.

What the hell is a teraflop anyway? - tech
(hx) 09:14 AM CEST - Jun,27 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
What the hell is a teraflop anyway? And to what extent does it define gaming power? The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer explains all.
Teraflops are a very basic measure of computational power, separate and distinct from all other aspects of GPU design. For example, AMD's GCN (graphics core next) architecture has always been heavy on raw computational power compared to its Nvidia rivals - one reason why Radeon GPUs did so well back in the cryptocurrency gold rush era. However, it is important to stress that this does not necessarily translate into games performance.

A good example of this is to compare Nvidia's GTX 1080 with its 9TF vs AMD's Radeon R9 Fury X with 8.6TF. Based on computational power alone, you'd expect these two graphics cards to offer broadly equivalent performance, but as the 4K benchmarks below demonstrate, the GTX 1080 isn't just a bit faster, it's a lot faster in all but one title we tested. Indeed, even the slower GTX 1070 - with a rated 6.5TF of power - can comfortably outperform Fury X in many games. Further, in terms of teraflops, the GTX 1070 even lags behind Nvidia's own Titan X (7TF) and again, it manages to match or even outperform it.

Drivers - the software powering the hardware - are important, but more crucially, so is the design of the graphics architecture itself, not to mention other aspects of the hardware, such as memory bandwidth and on-chip memory caches. However, comparisons between console parts can be broadly indicative for two reasons: firstly, because the surrounding elements of the GPU tend to scale as required in line with compute performance and secondly, because both PS4 and Xbox One GPUs come from the same family and share very similar core designs.

  • The Intel SSD 540s (480GB) Review - Against the wider field of competitors, the Intel 540s is clearly an entry-level SSD, intended for light workloads. It cannot keep pace with SanDisk's X400 or even the current generation of Phison S10-based drives like the Toshiba OCZ TR150 (formerly Trion 150). The ADATA SP550 has held on to a place in the market by usually being one of the cheapest drives available, but at the moment it is mostly tied with the TR150 on price, making the latter a better purchase given its better performance. The current pricing of the Intel SSD 540s makes my recommendation quite simple: don't buy.
  • Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro Wi-Fi Hard Drive Review - Iit is clear that Western Digital continues to differentiate itself in the crowded wireless storage market. The addition of 802.11ac support, and the continued targeting of content creators as well as consumers (with features such as Plex and support for external storage devices formatted in exFAT) are welcome aspects. The experience with the My Passport Wireless Pro was positive overall. The only quibble we have is that the WLAN radios are both 1x1 configurations. Having 2x2 radios could provide better performance. It is not outside the scope for such products, since the first generation unit did come with a 2x2 802.11n WLAN adapter.

Moving forward Google will show a list of related conditions to symptoms like stuffy nose, cough, or headache. The results will provide a description of the symptom itself, list possible self-treatment options, and alert when symptoms warrant a doctor visit. "Our goal is to help you to navigate and explore health conditions related to your symptoms, and quickly get to the point where you can do more in-depth research on the web or talk to a health professional," explained Google in a blog post. Google created a list of symptoms based on medical conditions that are often included in search results. The list was checked by medical professionals at the Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic in order to associate individual symptoms with potential ailments. Google warns that its search results are for informational purposes only and should not replace in-person consultations with physicians or other healthcare providers. The changed symptom-based search results will appear on mobile devices in the coming days.
  • Galaxy Note 7 Confirmed With Iris Scanner - Multiple reports stated that Samsung might skip a numeral to release the Galaxy Note 7 later this year, and it also being reported that there will be no flat screen variant of the device. Now, a new image has surfaced that pretty much confirms the name of the next flagship smartphone from Samsung. A new tweet from serial leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) consists of what could be an official logo of the Galaxy Note 7. It is possible that the South Korean smartphone giant might release only the curved screen variant of the Galaxy Note 7. It is expected to feature a 5.8-inch curved QHD Super AMOLED display, a 12-megapixel primary camera with new features, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, 6GB RAM, a microSD card slot, and a 4000 mAh battery.

AMD Driver Hotfix 16.6.1 - tech
(hx) 01:26 AM CEST - Jun,08 2016 - Post a comment
AMD support offers new version 16.6.1 hotfix Crimson Edition reference drivers for AMD graphics cards. These add support for Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Paragon, and also include a new AMD Crossfire profile for Dark Souls III. While these include a number of improvements, they also warn of a few remaining issues:
- A few game titles may fail to launch or crash if the AMD Gaming Evolved overlay is enabled. A temporary workaround is to disable the AMD Gaming Evolved "In Game Overlay".
- Battlefield 4 may experience crashes when using Mantle. As a work around users are suggested to switch to DirectX 11.
- Doom some game levels may experience shimmering textures.
- The Division may hang when using Quad AMD Crossfire technology. As a workaround users are recommended to disable AMD Crossfire technology mode.
- Radeon Settings gaming profile options for Uplay applications may not take effect.
- Forza Motorsport 6: Apex may exhibit brightness flickering when using AMD FreeSync technology.
- Frame Rate Target Control gaming profiles may fail to enable for some games.
- On some AMD XConnect technology external GPU enclosures, a TDR may be observed when the dGPU is set to primary display and the laptop display is set to extended display with video playback.

  • GTX 1080 Founders Edition Fan Issue To Be Fixed With Next Driver - The fan would start spinning up and down for no particular reason. It revs up from 2000 RPM to 3000 RPM no matter the temperature or software being used at that time. Those who considered returning their cards, may want to wait few more days, as NVIDIA has reportedly found the solution and the problem should will be fixed with the next driver release. NVIDIA rep confirmed that software team was able to reproduce this problem, and their fix has already passed internal testing. The next driver should be released next week, shortly before GTX 1070 becomes available (10th June).
  • Leaked Galaxy Note 6 (Note 7?) - curved edges,USB Type-C, iris - uSwitch has managed to get its hands on what it claims are leaked blueprints of Samsung's next flagship handset. What it reveals is a device that'll look almost identical to the Galaxy S7 Edge, complete with curved edges. The key difference, of course, is the slot for the stylus.  The blueprints also reveal that Samsung is ditching the standard USB port in favor of a USB Type-C port, a welcomed move on a high-end device as it enables faster transfers and charging. A series of sensors above the display suggest the phone may feature a biometric iris scanner that would let users unlock their handset simply by looking at it.  In related news, serial leaker Evan Blass of @evleaks says Samsung is on track to unveil the next Note smartphone almost two months from now, or in early August. If true, that would be even earlier than the Note 5's debut on August 13 of last year and give Samsung more time on the market ahead of Apple's next iPhone.
  • Samsung Giving Away Gear VR to Galaxy S Buyers - Samsung said it will give a Gear VR headset to people who buy one of its Galaxy S smartphones between now and June 19. The qualifying handsets include the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy Note 5. Consumers who buy one of these phones from a participating retailer (carrier stores, Best Buy, CostCo, Sam's Club, Target, Walmart) can submit a claim form and Samsung will ship the headset. Samsung says the device must be purchased on an installment plan, purchased with a contract, leased, or bought outright to qualify for the offer. Samsung says it has 600,000 Gear VR headsets to give away. If more than 600,000 people submit claim forms, Samsung may choose to reward people with a $100 gift card to Samsung.com.

That's because several technologies are converging to make this accessible. Recognition algorithms have become far more accurate, the devices we carry can process huge amounts of data, and there's massive databases of faces now available on social media that are tied to our real names. As facial recognition enters the mainstream, it will have serious implications for your privacy.
  • Google Now On Tap Lets You Search Selected Text and Images - Google has announced an update to its Now On Tap feature for devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Moving forward, users will be able to highlight the exact set of text they'd like to search via Now On Tap. Users can select single words, or sentences, paragraphs, and entire pages for search. Image search is another useful new feature. When viewing any image in any app, users can long press the home button to call up info cards about whatever is in the image. This tool also works when using the camera app. Users can search for whatever is visible in the camera viewfinder. This last feature sort of brings back Google's old Goggles visual search tool. People who have devices with Android 6.0 Marshmallow need only update their Google Search app to make use of these new features.
  • KFC to Accept Android, Apple, and Samsung Pay - KFC said its U.S restaurants will soon support Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. Some stores will accept the three mobile payment services beginning today, and KFC expects all stores to support Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay by the end of the summer. KFC's deployment is notable in that it supports multiple services at once. Android Pay and Apple Pay require NFC-equipped retail terminals, while Samsung Pay can use NFC- and MST-based terminals. KFC said it will accept mobile payments at the drive-thru as well as in-store. The deployment is part of a series of investments that KFC is making to improve its stores.
  • Court: No Warrant Needed to Pull Carrier-Based Location Data - A U.S. appeals court said law enforcement does not need to obtain a warrant before obtaining location data from wireless network operators. Today's decision stems from an appeal based on a Baltimore case involving armed robberies from 2011. Citing a decades-old idea suggesting consumers routinely allow their phone service provider to know their location, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, reversed a divided opinion from last year. The majority (12-3) opinion held that "Anyone who has stepped outside to 'get a signal,' or has warned a caller of a potential loss of service before entering an elevator, understands, on some level, that location matters." A ruling last year from the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court agreed that no warrant is needed. The Supreme Court has refused to review similar cases. A lawyer for the ACLU argued that the matter has not been finalized by the courts.

AMD Radeon RX480 officially announced - tech
(hx) 12:47 AM CEST - Jun,02 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
The next-generation graphics card war is officially on—though it's already shaping up very differently than previous versions. While Nvidia kicked things off with the overwhelming firepower of the enthusiast-only $600 GeForce GTX 1080 and $380 GTX 1070, AMD's attacking the mainstream instead.

In a livestream from Computex in Taipei, AMD announced that the Radeon RX 480 will be the first graphics card based on its forthcoming Polaris graphics processors. And get this: The Radeon RX 480 stands ready to deliver performance equivalent to what today's $500 graphics cards offer. That's roughly in line with the Radeon R9 390X, GeForce GTX 980, or air-cooled Radeon Fury.

The Radeon RX 480 will cost only $200 when it goes on sale on June 29.

  • The Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK mini-PC Review - One of the more impressive aspects of the Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK is the reappearance of Thunderbolt in a mini-PC.  Connecting the Thunderbolt ports on the two machines and allowing the PCs to talk to each other automatically creates a 10Gbps network adapter. For a setup with just two machines, it is enough to just set static IPs on the interfaces of both machines in the same subnet, and setting the network location to private so that the machines can talk to each other.
  • MSI GT80S Titan SLI Gaming Laptop First Look -  The MSI GT80S Titan SLI features an Intel Core i7-6920HQ, with four locked cores at a frequency of 2.9 GHz and a 3.8 GHz turbo clock. Although the Core i7-6920HQ is a heck of a mobile processor, some may question the choice of a locked CPU in a premium powerhouse PC. However, it all boils down to power, and the 330-watt power adapter is already exceeding its limits with the inclusion of two GTX 980 graphics modules, which eat up to 150 watts each. If the GPUs are on full blast (which is unlikely in real-world applications), this leaves roughly 30 watts to run the rest of the system, so it’s no surprise MSI paired the powerful desktop-grade GPU configuration with a locked mobile processor.
  • ZOTAC announces three new GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards - The first cards in the lineup include the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 AMP and the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme. The GeForce GTX 1080 AMP and GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme cards come with SPECTRA, a lighting system that lets you customize colors and mood lighting using the redesigned ZOTAC FireStorm utility. As far as cooling goes, the GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Edition features re-engineered dual fan IceStorm with tougher ExoArmor. The GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme on the other hand is equipped with a triple fan IceStorm thermal system with EXO Fan performance claimed to deliver up to 30% higher airflow compared to traditional fans. Also MSI has unleashed its lineup of GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards, with a total of six new cards. The cards announced by MSI include the GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G, GTX 1080 SEA HAWK, GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G OC, GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G, GTX 1080 AERO 8G OC, and the GTX 1080 AERO 8G. The GeForce GTX 1080 SEA HAWK is a result of a partnership between MSI and Corsair. The card integrates Corsair’s popular Hydro Series liquid cooler, allowing it to deliver extreme gaming performance thanks to increased clock speeds out of the box. MSI GeForce GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G OC comes in a Black & White design that has been inspired by advanced armor shielding. It includes the ARMOR 2X Thermal Design that uses patented TORX Fan technology and Advanced Airflow Control for improved cooling performance.
  • Microsoft accused of deceiving people into upgrading to Windows 10 with updated pop-up - Microsoft is in trouble yet again for its heavy-handed approach when 'encouraging' people to move to Windows 10. The GWX prompt was changed last week, introducing a small and quite easily-missed link that allows users to reschedule or cancel the upgrade. But when presented with this Window, many people missed the link and simply clicked on the corner X as usual, assuming they were canceling the installation; instead, they were consenting for the update to take place at the scheduled time.
  • Overwatch Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance Tested - Making the game even more affordable are the surprisingly relaxed PC hardware requirements. • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition - Introducing the new Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition inspired by DC Super Hero Batman.
  • Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 might instead be called the Galaxy Note 7 - If you are waiting for Samsung to finally announce the Galaxy Note 6, you may well be surprised to find out that there might be no device under such a name in the near future. According to a source from Korea, Samsung has decided to skip the Galaxy Note 6, and instead name its upcoming Note handset as the 'Galaxy Note 7'. As for the reason for this unusual change, this was reportedly to eliminate inconsistencies when it comes to branding Samsung's products. Samsung has announced and launched the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge early this year, and such a move supposedly will help bring more parity with the company's handsets. 'When Galaxy Note 6 that has its model number lower than Galaxy S7, which is the newest model, is released, it can give out a feeling that it is an outdated phone,' according to a high-ranking official of a telecommunications company. Moreover, according to the source, Samsung is already referring to the next Note device as the Galaxy Note 7. Rumors are further stating that Samsung is also planning on using dual-edged screens for the Note series for the first time. However, it is still not known if this change will produce two variants, a Note 7, and a Note 7 edge, similar to the S flagships. As for the possible time of release, the new Note handset is seen to be launched around mid-August, which is at par with the Galaxy Note 5's announcement which was last August 13, 2015, and was made available to the public after just a week.

  • Foxconn Replaces 60,000 Factory Workers With Robots - A government official in China just announced that Foxconn has replaced 60,000 factory workers with robots. How long before other companies do the same? Robots are cheaper, work 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no overtime, can't call in sick....kinda like human employees in China, just less robotic. Former McDonald's chief executive Ed Rensi recently told the US's Fox Business programme a minimum-wage increase to $15 an hour would make companies consider robot workers. "It's cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who is inefficient, making $15 an hour bagging French fries," he said.
  • Spotify family plan is now $14.99 - Spotify has offered Family Plans for some time now, but today the company is sweetening the deal while matching rival music streaming services from Apple and Google. The company has announced it is now allowing up to up to six listeners (they don't really need to be family) to grab a Premium subscription for $15 a month. Previously, Spotify charged $14.99 for two listeners and up to $29.99 for a family of five. The new pricing structure is rolling out globally starting today, except in Canada for some reason. Current Spotify family plan subscribers will automatically get upgraded to the new plan and should see a lower bill the next time they are charged.
  • Pebble Reveals Two New Watches and 3G Connected Button - Pebble today announced the Pebble 2 and Time 2 smartwatches, as well as the Core connected button. The two wearables target fitness users and include heart rate monitors for tracking workouts and monitoring sleep. Pebble recently updated its health tools, and the Pebble 2 and Time 2 are able to take advantage of the upgraded software. Both devices serve notifications, show the owner's schedule, control music, run some 13,000 apps, and perform simple tasks. Each has an e-paper display and is water resistant down to 30 meters. The Pebble 2 can run for seven days and costs $99, while the Time 2 can run for 10 days and costs $169. They work with Android an iOS smartphones. The Core is a 3G-enabled fob that Pebble says acts as a smartphone when on the go. The device has two buttons that can be programmed to do anything, such as start/stop streaming Spotify playlists. The Core has Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS radios, and can act as a relay to the internet for Pebble smartwatches. It can be paired with Bluetooth headsets and accept voice commands, serve as a hotspot, and sync with select fitness apps. The Core costs $99. All three devices are available for pre-order via Kickstarter. The Pebble 2 ships in September, the Time 2 ships in November, and the Core ships in early 2017.
  • How Deep Learning Can Paint Videos in the Style of Art's Great - Thanks to Instagram and Snapchat, adding filters to images and videos is pretty straight forward. But what if you could repaint your smartphone videos in the style of van Gogh's Starry Night or Munch's The Scream? A team of researchers from Germany's University of Freiburg has made significant strides toward this goal using an approach to artificial intelligence called deep learning. The team developed a method that uses a deep neural network to extract a specific artistic style from a source painting, and then synthesizes this information with the content of a separate video. NVIDIA GPUs make it possible to crunch through this computationally intensive work with striking results.
