  • Microsoft removes Windows 10 upgrade ads - Microsoft has released an update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 that will please users who've decided to stick with an older operating system. KB3184143, as spotted by ZDNet, removes the Get Windows 10 app and all other software related to Windows 10 upgrades. The primary purpose of the Get Windows 10 app was to promote the Windows 10 free upgrade offer and try to convince as many users as possible to upgrade. However, the app's tactics were controversial: it not only advertised Windows 10 through pop-ups, but it would also sometimes install Windows 10 in the background, even if you clicked to dismiss the pop-up windows. While most advertising for Windows 10 inside older versions of Windows disappeared when the free upgrade offer ended on July 29th, the Get Windows 10 app was still deployed on most Windows 7 and 8.1 systems. KB3184143 "removes the Get Windows 10 app and other software related to the Windows 10 free upgrade offer."
  • Mamba ransomware encrypts your hard drive - Typical ransomware behavior usually involves encryption of a user's computer files after they run an executable program, or maybe a Javascript file, in order to lower suspicions. However, a new strain of ransomware goes for the bigger piece of the cake, encrypting an entire hard drive aside from the files themselves. Called Mamba or HDDCrypt, the malware was initially discovered in the Morphus Labs in Brazil. It was also found in machines in the United States and India. According to Renato Marinho, a researcher at Morphus Labs, the malware is believed to be spread through phishing emails and malicious downloads. Once it infects a machine, it overwrites the host computer's Master Boot Record (MBR) with its own variant, and from there, it will now be able to encrypt the hard drive.

  • Apple Releases iOS 10.0.2 to Fix Bugs - Apple today made iOS 10.0.2 available to iPhones and iPads in order to resolve some bugs. According to Apple, the small update addresses a problem impacting audio controls, fixes an issue that prevents some app extensions from working, and solves a bug that caused Photos to crash. iOS 10.0.2 is free to download and install. The update includes fixes for several minor bugs, including an annoying problem that was causing the Lightning headphone controls to be disabled after a period of inactivity. The glitch seemed to happen randomly and could only be fixed by unplugging and re-plugging them. Reports started to emerge just days after the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus officially went on sale and to Apple’s credit the fix didn’t take too long at all. The update also solves a problem that caused the Photos app to crash when enabling iCloud Photo Library and a problem that prevented app extensions from being enabled.

The replacement devices will be made available starting September 21 to people who previously bought the Galaxy Note7 and need to exchange it for one with a known-safe battery. Further, Samsung plans to push a software update to all Note7s to help consumers identify safe devices from those that still might pose a fire risk. Once updated, new/safe Note7 units will display a green battery icon on the status bar found on the top right hand of the screen. Samsung and the U.S. CPSC urge everyone who bought a Note7 before September 15 to power down their device. A software update will be pushed to all recalled devices that will prompt owners with a safety notice urging them to turn the phone off and and exchange it. The notice will appear every time Note7 owners power up or charge their impacted phone. Note7 owners can visit Samsung's web site for more information

Street Fighter V Installs Hidden Rootkit On PCs - tech
(hx) 07:24 PM CEST - Sep,24 2016 - Post a comment
An update to the newest Street Fighter game allows any application to have kernel-level privileges. While the driver was intended to prevent players from hacking the title, it allows someone to hack your entire system instead.
This means any malicious software on the system can poke a dodgy driver installed by SFV to completely take over the Windows machine. Capcom claims it uses the driver to stop players from hacking the high-def beat 'em up to cheat. Unfortunately, the code is so badly designed, it opens up a full-blown local backdoor.

Let's drill down to the technical details: the capcom.sys kernel-level driver provides an IOCTL service to applications that disables SMEP on the computer, executes code at a given pointer, and then reenables SMEP. In other words, it switches off a crucial security defense in the operating system, then runs whatever instructions are given to it by the application, and then switches the protection back on.

SMEP [PDF] is a feature in modern Intel and AMD x86 processors that, when enabled, prevents kernel-level software from executing code in user-owned memory pages. It's there to stop hackers from tricking the operating system into running malicious software smuggled into an application's virtual memory space – the OS should only be able to run its own trusted code, not anything provided by any old app.

Capcom.sys completely blows this away on Windows: an application simply has to pass control codes 0xAA012044 and 0xAA013044 to the IOCTL, and a pointer to some instructions, and the driver will then jump to that block of code with full kernel permissions.

GTX 970 owners can receive their $30 - tech
(hx) 10:05 PM CEST - Sep,12 2016 - Post a comment / read (5)
As a reminder: the lawsuit revolved around the 970’s advertised 4 GB RAM, which Nvidia had separated into a speedy 3.5 GB section and a much slower 512 MB segment. The company also said that the card had 64 render outputs, whereas it actually had 56. Nvidia claims this didn't make much difference to the card’s performance. It certainly didn’t affect sales; the 970 has been the most popular GPU among Steam users since December last year. However, the positive reception didn’t stop some users bringing the lawsuits, which allege false advertising and deceptive business practices.

To be eligible for the $30 rebate, you must have purchased a GTX 970 between September 1, 2014, and August 24, 2016, from Nvidia, its card partners – Gigabyte, ZOTAC, etc. – or an authorized retailer, and only if you bought it in the US. You may also be eligible if you purchased a desktop PC containing a 970 from an authorized retailer during this time.

You’ll need to provide proof of purchase or your device ID to file a claim. Best not hang around if you want that extra money, though; claims must be sent in by November 8.

Samsung said customers who take advantage of the exchange program will be given a $25 gift card or bill credit from the retail or carrier store. Apple today announced the iPhone 7, the latest version of its flagship product. The device is machines from aluminum and features a refreshed design. The home button, which owners use hundreds of times per day, is now a capacitive, force-sensitive button that works with a taptic engine to create an entirely new feedback feel. The enclosures are water and dust resistant. It rates IP67 thanks to new seals and baffles. The camera is all new. It includes a large-pixel, 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture and six-element lens with optical image stabilization. The quad-tone LED flash helps balance skin tones and wide color gamut. An image signal processor makes billions of calculations in a fraction of a second to ensure the best photos. The camera adds stabilization to Live Photo capture, and iOS 10 permits RAW image capture both from the Apple camera app as well as third-party camera apps. The user-facing camera has a 7-megapixel sensor with wide color and image stabilization. The iPhone 7 Plus adds a second, telephoto 12-megapixel camera. The main camera has an effective focal length of 28mm, and the second has an effective focal length of 56mm for a zoomed-in effect. Apple is calling it 2x optical zoom and, when combined with digital zoom, produces higher quality photos at up to 10x zoom. The 7 Plus also includes a Bokeh effect to create better portraiture. (This feature will be added to the 7 Plus later this year.) Apple updated the displays, which it says are 25% brighter than last year's models, offer a wide color gamut, color management, and 3D Touch. For the first time, the iPhone includes stereo speakers that are twice as loud as the 2015 iPhones and have twice the dynamic range. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus remove the headphone jack and rely on just the Lightning port for audio connections. The devices will ship with Lightning earbuds, as well as a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter. The new iPhones rely on the A10 Fusion processor, which Apple says is 40% faster than last year's A9 and twice as face as the 2014-era A8. The four-core CPU offers two high-efficiency cores that run at one-fifth the power draw for low-intensity or background tasks. Graphics are improved, too. Apple says battery life better, with the 7 providing two more hours of life per day when compared to the 6s and the 7 Plus providing one more hour when compared to the 6 Plus. The devices include LTE-Advanced for speedy wireless. The iPhone 7 comes in jet black, black, silver, gold, and rose gold. Pricing for the iPhone 7 is $649 for 32 GB, $749 for 128 GB, or $849 for 256 GB. Pricing for the iPhone 7 Plus is $769 for 32 GB, $869 for 128 GB, or $969 for 256 GB. The iPhone will be available for preorder September 9 and goes on sale September 16.

  • NVIDIA At VRLA Summer Expo 2016 - VR LA uploaded a handful of videos over the weekend from the VRLA Summer Expo.
  • AMD Rockets Past 100 FreeSync Displays - AMD just broke a record with Lenovo’s Y27f, which happens to be the 101st display released that supports their FreeSync technology. As you probably already know, these monitors provide a stutter- and tear-free experience.
  • 2TB Crucial MX300 SSD Coming Soon For $550 - Amazon has become an excellent news source for unannounced products. This week, we discovered a Crucial MX300 2TB model. The MX300 uses Micron's first generation 3D flash memory. The new 32-layer 3D with three-bits per cell memory uses a high density 384Gbit die that Crucial plans to use to scale for high-capacity SSDs. The MX300 2TB is really a 2,100 GB SSD much like the 1TB is a 1,050 GB. Even with the larger-than-standard capacity size, each model still reserves spare area for background activities like garbage collection and wear leveling. This keeps the drive operating at high speeds by shuffling clean blocks into active storage for high-speed data writes.
  • CORSAIR Announces Full New Range of LUX Mechanical Keyboards - CORSAIR has announced the immediate and worldwide availability of its new LUX range of mechanical keyboards. Building on the phenomenal success of the CORSAIR K70, K70 RGB and K65, the new LUX range adds a host of new features and improvements. With enhanced lighting, USB pass-through and a back-lit optimized key cap font, CORSAIR LUX keyboards retain the core-design, premium materials and commitment to quality that has earned the CORSAIR K-series over 300 global media awards, making them the benchmark for high-performance keyboards.
  • Asus ProArt PA329Q 32-inch UHD Pro Monitor Review - A quick check online reveals that the PA328Q is selling for just under $1,000 while the PA329Q comes in around $300 higher. That extra cash buys you an Adobe RGB gamut option and an internal lookup table that reaches a 14-bit depth rather than 12. Native panel bandwidth is still 10 bits. Of course you’ll need a 10-bit-capable video board to take full advantage of this feature. When editing the latest content however, you’ll have the ability to master for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and larger color gamuts like Rec.2020.
  • Zotac ZBOX MAGNUS EN980 SFF PC Review - An Innovative VR-Ready Gaming Powerhouse - The Zotac ZBOX MAGNUS EN980's system performance and VR-ready GPU configuration should satisfy the vast majority of gaming enthusiasts. We have a compact unit that is able to properly support a high-end desktop GPU while maintaining excellent thermal and acoustic parameters. Pretty much the only people who might find it unattractive are those who tend to upgrade components selectively over the lifespan of their gaming system, or DIY enthusiasts who want the latest and greatest in choice of components for their PC build.
  • Fantom ransomware pretends to be Windows Update - A new strain of ransomware has been discovered, which utilizes a fake Windows Update screen, pretending to install a critical update. In reality, it is encrypting user's files. Discovered by Jakub Kroustek of AVG Technologies, the 'Fantom' ransomware plays tricks on potential victims by dropping an executable program named 'a.exe.' To cloak its malicious activity, the file's properties state that it contains a 'critical update' for Windows Update. A 2016 copyright from Microsoft is even written, to even lower suspicions.  Once the program is executed, it will extract and run another application under the name 'WindowsUpdate.exe.' This will display what looks like a screen configuring Windows Updates, complete with a percentage meter, and a reminder not to turn off the PC. The screen is designed to look like the ones many go through to install legitimate updates, in order to make victims think that there is nothing wrong going on. Once it is displayed, the program will not let the user switch applications.  As the screen pretends to 'configure Windows Updates,' it is silently encrypting files in the background like other ransomware variants. Once done, it will generate a random AES-128 key, which will be uploaded to the malware's Command & Control (C&C) server. It targets a wide number of file extensions, where a '.fantom' file extension will be appended to.
  • Rare iOS spyware caught in the wild exploiting three zero-day flaws -Researchers at Citizen Lab, a team that investigates surveillance technology, and Lookout Inc. claim that a little-known Israeli startup exploited unknown flaws in iOS to help foreign governments spy on their citizens. As The Wall Street Journal points out, the surveillance software in question came from NSO Group Technologies Ltd. which is known to sell to governments. Researchers first became aware of the software earlier this month through a link sent to a human-rights activist in the United Arab Emirates. The software, dubbed Pegasus, reportedly takes advantage of three flaws in iOS. Once installed, it acts as a surveillance device and can log messages, track movement and siphon personal data.
  • Apple Pushes iOS 9.3.5 to Patch Security Holes - Apple has made iOS 9.3.5 available to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. The update, according to Apple, resolves three security issues. Two of the problems could have led to remote code execution. Apple suggests all users update as soon as possible. The update is free to download over the air.
  • Opera Brings Its Mobile VPN to Android Devices - Opera Software today launched a free VPN for Android devices that allows smartphone and tablet owners to browse the web more securely and access what might be prohibited content when using managed networks. The VPN removes ad trackers for privacy purposes and supports virtual locations (U.S., Canada, Germany, Singapore, and the Netherlands), which should let people get around some region-based restrictions. The VPN includes a WiFi tester that can detect the strength of WiFi security. If the VPN determines the network isn't secure, it will recommend users connect through the VPN. The WiFi sniffer also checks to see if the network its public or private, if it's encrypted, how many other devices are using it, if the IP address/location are exposed, and whether or not others can see your device. Opera imagines the VPN will be useful to students and office workers who are restricted from accessing social networks or other types of web sites when using campus or office WiFi. Opera VPN is free to downloaded from the Google Play Store. Opera made the same VPN available to iOS devices earlier this year.
  • WhatsApp will share data with Facebook for targeted user ads - Existing users will be prompted in the next few days to agree to the new terms. Seemingly adept at communicating with the dead, the women are somewhat less experienced with the business of the living. Nevertheless, their astonishing exhibit of apparently supernatural powers piques the interest of powerful French film producer André Korben (Emmanuel Salinger), who retains their strange talents for his wildly ambitious new film project. Laura and Kate are soon swept up in a scheme that, fusing art and the occult, portends a dark shadow soon to be cast over all of Europe.

Google Officially Releases Android 7 Nougat - tech
(hx) 08:53 AM CEST - Aug,23 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
Google today made the final version of Android 7.0 Nougat available to developers, phone makers, and select devices. Google released the first developer build of Nougat earlier this year and has been refining the platform ever since. Today marks the official release of the platform, which moves out of beta. The next-generation mobile operating system includes support for Vulkan to improve graphics performance for games, but it also improves the Android runtime to speed up daily use. For example, apps should install 75% faster while requiring 50% less code. On the security front, Nougat introduces file-based encryption to better isolate and protect individual users. It also hardened the media framework to prevent attacks. Nougat offers seamless security updates that happen automatically in the background with no user action required. Google made improvements to the multitasking functions, with multi-window mode available to all. Nougat will show only the most recent seven apps and moves the "clear all" tool to the top of the screen to prevent accidental closings. Nougat overhauls notifications, providing direct control over silencing certain types of notifications. The platform adds Unicode 9.0 for an expanded set of emoji, including skin-tone variations. Last, Nougat bakes in more direct support for virtual reality. Nougat is available to the Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, and Pixel C devices.

  • Intel Believes USB Type-C Will Replace 3.5mm Jack - A planned update to the USB Type-C specification will give it more control over audio functions, paving the way for it to fully supplant the 3.5mm headphone jack on most phones. Speaking at the Intel Developers Forum, engineers Brad Saunders and Rahman Ismail explained that the new USB audio standard lowers power usage through USB and defines how buttons on headphones can control music. The standard "will really make USB Type-C the right connector for audio," said Saunders. The 3.5mm headset jack is universally available on most consumer electronics, but is decades old. Dropping the jack will free up internal space, lowers the potential for interference, and negates the need for a digital-to-analog converter. Moreover, Saunders says the updated spec allows for software-based audio effects and signal processing that can, for example, cancel out nearby noise. Last, the updated USB-C spec improves support for video. Saunders says the new video capabilities will be good for working on a PC or watching a movie, but not necessarily for graphics-intensive gaming. USB-C is slowly gaining traction in smartphones. Samsung's Galaxy Note7 made the switch to USB-C, as did HTC 10, LG G5, and just-announced Huawei Honor 8. The connector is slim and reversible, and Type-C cables can push power in both directions
  • Samsung Accessories Land Alongside Note7 - The Samsung Galaxy Note7 reaches U.S. stores today and with it some interesting accessories and companion products from Samsung. The new Gear VR headset, which is compatible with the Note7 and other recent Galaxy phones, has a new look, new color, and expanded field of view. It's available for $100 at carrier stores, as well as Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung. The Gear 360 camera (pictured), able to shoot 360-degree photos and video, will only be available online for $350. Samsung's Gear IconX wireless earbuds are available, too. These $200 headphones are fully wireless, have built-in memory, and can track workouts. The less expensive Samsung Level Active headphones are sweat proof and can control music/calls for $100. Last, the Samsung Connect auto provides an AT&T-backed in-car hotspot via the OBD II port. The Connect auto can also send alerts to the driver and improve driving safety/efficiency. AT&T will sell the Samsung Connect auto online and in stores. The Galaxy Note7 is Samsung's flagship phablet for the year. It has a 5.7-inch screen, 12-megapixel main camera, Snapdragon 820 processor, 64 GB of storage, and the S Pen stylus. The Note7 is available from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
  • Google is killing off Chrome apps on Windows, macOS, and Linux - Google today announced on the Chromium blog that it would be ending support for Chrome apps on Windows, macOS, and Linux. According to Google, the company launched Chrome apps three years ago to bridge the gap between what could be done on the web and what could be done with a native application. Since then, APIs have been developed that allow web apps to do more, such as use push notifications.
  • Google Building Non-Linux OS Called Fuchsia - Google is working on a new operating system called Fuchsia. The open-source platform is the first from Google that does not rely on Linux at its core. Instead, the operating system runs the Magenta kernel and, according to the documentation, it relies on the Flutter user interface and Dart programming language. The platform appears to be intended as an embedded operating system for IoT devices, but it can also run on smartphones and PCs. Google hasn't said much about the project, but the platform is available in pieces via GitHub. It's unclear if or when Google might release a complete, final version of the operating system.

PowerShell, for those not up to speed, is a task-based command-line shell and scripting language that’s built on the .NET framework. It’s designed to assist IT professionals in automating and controlling the administration of Windows (and now, Linux) and the apps that run on them.
  • MIT Spinout Claims to Double Battery Life - A company called SolidEnergy Systems, a spinout from MIT, says it has new battery technology that will double the life of lithium-based power cells. The breakthrough involves a battery that replaces the traditional graphite anode with a thin, lithium-metal foil. The foil can hold more ions and thus more potential energy. Further, new chemistry protects the lithium-metal so it can be recharged frequently and used at normal temperatures. The company says it can create small batteries that provide as much charge as larger batteries, or it can double the life of larger batteries. Perhaps most importantly, SolidEnergy's technology was founded on a failed MIT startup called A123. SolidEnergy has taken over A123's Massachusetts-based facilities and claims it can mass produce the new lithium-metal batteries in volume. In fact, it plans to produce batteries for drones as soon as November, with batteries for smartphones to follow in early 2017. Battery-life breakthroughs are common in research settings, but often can't scale for use in the real world. SolidEnergy's technology and manufacturing progress appear to be further along than most.
  • AT&T's Mobile Share Advantage Plans Drop Overages - AT&T today announced new service plans for multiple lines that do away with overage charges. The Mobile Share Advantage program includes unlimited talk and text in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, rollover data, sharable data, mobile hotspot, and unlimited texting to more than 120 other countries. Rather than charge customers overage fees for exceeding their monthly data allotments, AT&T will throttle users back to 2G, or about 128 Kbps, for the remainder of the billing cycle. This is in line with what competitors do. Data plans now start at 1 GB and range up to 100 GB for families, and from 25 GB to 200 GB for businesses. AT&T said new options make the plans more flexible, such as the addition of 6 GB and 10 GB data buckets. Smartphone access charges are now a flat fee of $20 per device. Device payments are extra. The new Mobile Share Advantage plans will be available starting August 21.

  • Toshiba Begins to Sample eMLC-Based ZD6300 7.68 TB SSDs to Customers - Toshiba has quietly expanded its ZD6300 family of SSDs with a 7.68 TB model, its most capacious storage device announced to date. The new drive was designed for mixed workloads and uses Toshiba’s time-proven A19 eMLC NAND flash memory. Due to enhanced endurance and a lot of NAND used for overprovisioning, the SSD can be pre-ordered for approximately $12,000, depending on the seller, though its official MSRP is still unknown.
  • Western Digital to Use 3D ReRAM as Storage Class Memory for Special-Purpose SSDs - To sum up, Western Digital has finished development of ReRAM, which SanDisk has been discussing for several years now. The company plans to release actual products based on ReRAM in the foreseeable future (12 – 24 months from now, call it a guess) and to use the same fab and equipment to build ReRAM and NAND ICs. Western Digital’s ReRAM has a roadmap for the future. What remains to be seen is what is going to happen to the joint development of SCM announced by SanDisk and HP in October, 2015.
  • North American Businesses Reluctant To Adopt Windows 10 - Based on an evaluation of more than 400,000 Windows-based computing devices between January and May this year, across 169 organizations in the US and Canada using the TechCheck asset management solution, the study reveals less than one percent were running Windows 10. It finds the vast majority of North American businesses adopted Windows 7 as the corporate platform-of-choice since moving away from Windows XP, and have yet to move in significant quantities to newer versions Windows 8 or 10. "It appears businesses are hesitant to take advantage of the various Windows 10 upgrades and, at least for now, are satisfied with Windows 7," says David Brisbois, Softchoice's senior manager of assessment and technology deployment services consulting.
  • Monitors Are Vulnerable To Hijacking And Spying - Researchers have found a way to hack into monitors so they can see what is being displayed, as well as manipulate pixels so they can display different images. One billion monitors are reportedly susceptible, as most use the same processor that is vulnerable to this exploit.
  • Google Maps Gains New Offline/Roaming Powers - Google today launched two new features for Google Maps for Android: a Wi-Fi Only mode, and the option to store offline map data on removable memory cards. Together, the two features are especially useful for those traveling overseas, where data roaming is expensive. The Wi-Fi Only mode allows users to stay connected to data networks for functions like email, while avoiding data charges for mapping, relying instead only on offline map data previously downloaded, and on Wi-Fi service when available. • The GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition & ASUS Strix GTX 1060 Review - Looking at generational comparisons then, of all of the Pascal cards launched so far, GTX 1060 offers the best performance gains for a single generation. Relative to GTX 960 it offers an 85% performance improvement at 1080p, and even excluding the outliers this is still an 80% gain. This isn't quite a 2x performance gain in a single generation, but it is close, and closer than either GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 got. So for current GTX 960 owners, the GTX 1060 offers a tantalizing performance upgrade right off the bat, and for the older GTX 760 and GTX 660 cards the differences are even greater, never mind the newer features NVIDIA has introduced since Kepler. The one catch to all of this is price. Relative to GTX 960 prices for this generation have gone up, from $199 for GTX 960 to $249 for GTX 1060

  • Windows Flaw Lets Hackers Steal Your Username And Password - The flaw works because Internet Explorer and Edge (on Windows 10) allow a user to access local network shares but don't fully block connections to remote shares. To exploit this, a hacker has to trick a user into visiting a specially rafted web page in Internet Explorer or Edge (on Windows 10) that points to their own network share. The browser will silently send usernames and hashed passwords to the network share, which can then be scooped up and stolen. If passwords are weak, they can be easily unscrambled and used to log in to user accounts. The flaw can also be triggered by sending a trick email to a victim who uses Microsoft Outlook.
  • Note7's Iris Scanner Can Unlock Folders and Web Sites - Samsung today announced Samsung Pass, an identification tool that combines the iris scanner and fingerprint reader to verify identity. Samsung Pass will be able to replace passwords for select apps. The tool allows Note7 owners to protect folders and web sites, for example, making them inaccessible unless unlocked via the owner's iris scan. Further, Samsung is offering the tool to bank app makers so they can add iris-based security to their own apps. Six banks will support Samsung Pass at launch. Samsung Pass is included with the Galaxy Note7, which goes on sale August 19.
  • Galaxy Note7 Borrows from S7 as Samsung Reworks Pen Features - The Note7's defining feature is the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED quad HD screen, which is twice as sensitive to pen input when compared to the Note 5. The S Pen stylus has been redesigned and now features a tip that is the same size as a standard ballpoint pen. The Note7's note-taking functions have been bundled together into a single application that opens when the pen is removed. People can use the Note7 to easily create GIFs by dragging the S Pen across (non-DRM) video as it plays. Many of the hardware elements were taken from the Galaxy S7. For example, the Note7 relies on a Snapdragon 820 processor (for the U.S. market) with 4 GB of RAM, and includes the same 12-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel selfie camera as the S7.

  • The Windows 10 free upgrade offer has ended, along with annoying nags - Microsoft has ended its free upgrade offer for Windows 10 as expected, approximately one year after the launch of the operating system. There's good news for users on Windows 7 and Windows 8 who didn't want to upgrade: Microsoft's persistent and annoying nags about upgrading have ceased. The prompts, and in some cases automatic upgrades to Windows 10, have been the subject of controversy, with some suggesting Microsoft has been too aggressive in its attempts to get people to upgrade. There's also bad news. For those that did want to upgrade but didn't get around to it, you'll now have to pay for a Windows 10 license. Microsoft is currently selling Windows 10 Home licenses for $120, while Windows 10 Pro is available for $200. OEM licenses are a little cheaper: $100 for Home, and $140 for Pro through Newegg.
  • MS faces new lawsuits over aggressive Windows 10 free upgrade push - On Friday, Microsoft will end its year-long Windows 10 free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. The company has faced widespread criticism over its approach to encouraging users to upgrade to its latest operating system, with many accusing the firm of making the process of declining that offer needlessly difficult and confusing. That criticism has spread around the world, including China, where there have been murmurs of possible legal action over Microsoft's upgrade efforts. Last month, a woman successfully sued Microsoft in California, winning $10,000 from the company after an automatic Windows 10 installation failed, causing issues for her PC. Microsoft did not admit any wrongdoing in that case, saying that it chose not to appeal to avoid further legal costs.  Now, Microsoft is facing further legal action over the handling of its free upgrade offer, both at home and abroad. As The Seattle Times reports, three men filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in the US District Court in Florida last week, claiming that the frequent 'Get Windows 10' upgrade prompts were in violation of laws regarding unsolicited electronic advertising, and potentially in breach of Federal Trade Commission regulations on 'deceptive and unfair practices'.  Microsoft is also being sued in Haifa, Israel, over allegations that Windows 10 was installed on PCs without their owners' consent, which the lawsuit argues is contrary to Israeli law.
  • Vulnerabilities in unencrypted wireless keyboards - Researchers at cybersecurity company Bastille have discovered a vulnerability. they call “Keysniffer” that allows an attacker to record keystrokes from 250 feet away.  he issue is with those wireless keyboards that transmit to a PC using an unencrypted, radio-based communications protocol rather than a Bluetooth connection. These cheaper transceiver chips (and other non-Bluetooth chips), which operate in the 2.4GHz ISM radio band, don't recieve Bluetooth's security updates that could fix the problem. The unencrypted transmissions mean that anyone within a 250-foot line-of-sight radius could grab your passwords, credit card details, and any other personal information you type using a cheap dongle bought online. Researchers say attackers could also inject their own keystrokes to install malware or perform other malicious acts on a victim's PC.
  • Apple iPhone 7's Retail Launch Reportedly Set For September 16th - Famed tech informant Evan Blass, known as @evleaks on Twitter, claims Apple is gearing up to release its iPhone 7 model to retail on the week of September 12, and most likely on that Friday, September 16. And to be clear, he's referring to when you can actually go out and purchase an iPhone 7 model, not the launch event, which will take place sometime beforehand. There's no reason not to believe Blass on this one. Even ignoring his more than favorable history with leaking inside information that later turns out to be accurate, including Apple leaks, the time frame generally fits with Apple's past launches. A September 16 release is slightly earlier than the September 25 retail launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but not by much. And because it's on a Friday, Apple will be kicking things off with a full weekend of sales.
  • BlackBerry DTEK50 Is A Secured, Rebadged Alcatel Idol 4 - BlackBerry today announced the DTEK50 smartphone, a slab-style handset that runs Android and features BlackBerry's signature communications and security software. It includes Android for Work and Google Play for Work, as well as support for BlackBerry's full enterprise mobility management suite. Other features include BBM, BlackBerry Hub, the BlackBerry intelligent keyboard, and a customizable action key. The hardware is a rebadged version of the Alcatel Idol 4, which was announced earlier this year. The DTEK50 has a 5.2-inch full-HD LCD display, Snapdragon 617 processor with 3 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. It has a 13-megapixel camera main camera, 8-megapixel front camera, NFC, Cat 6 LTE, memory card slot, and Quick Charge 2.0. The phone ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The DTEK50 is available for preorder in the U.S. and other countries starting today for $299. BlackBerry said it will reveal shipping dates on a regional basis over the coming weeks.

Verizon charges $70 per month for its 8 GB (or, L) plan. Families that subscribe to the L, XL, and XXL plans can score an extra 2 GB of data per line. The bonus data is only available when customers activate a new line or upgrade an existing phone. Verizon says the bonus data will be available to each line as long as it remains active on Verizon's network. Bonus data will not carry over month-to-month. The $150 monthly price includes the $70 data charge, plus $80 in line access fees for four smartphones. Taxes and handset payments are not included. Verizon says the bonus data promotion will be available for a limited time. Customers who activate new lines of service will be eligible to receive a Samsung Galaxy J3 V handset for free ($7 bill credit applied on a monthly basis for 24 months). Verizon will allow new customers up to five free J3 Vs per account.
  • Verizon to Buy Yahoo's Internet Business for $4.8B - Verizon has said that it has agreed to buy Yahoo's core internet and search businesses for $4.83 billion. Yahoo's properties will join AOL under Verizon's ownership, to be managed by Marni Walden, EVP and President of the Product Innovation and New Businesses organization at Verizon. Verizon has spent the last few years building up its media business units. Yahoo claims to have more than 1 billion active monthly users, of which 600 million are mobile. Combining Yahoo and AOL will give Verizon control over 25 established brands, including news sites, analytics engines, email services, and advertising platforms. The sale does not include Yahoo's stake in Alibaba, Yahoo Japan, and other entities. Post sale, the remaining business will be rebranded as it transforms into an investment company. Android Auto and CarPlay allow smartphone users to access core functions, such as maps, music, messages, and the phone by using voice commands. Nvidia Will Pay GTX 970 Owners $30 - tech
(hx) 11:06 PM CEST - Jul,29 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
Back in early 2015, Nvidia was hit with a false advertising lawsuit over claims that the listed specs for its GTX970 video card were not accurate. Simply put, the 4GB of GDDR5 RAM the card was supposed to come with was actually 3.5GB of GDDR5 and a separate 500MB block running at a significantly slower speed. They will, however, have to pay $30 to each customer of the GTX 970 who can furnish a valid proof of purchase by December 21. More details on this will be sent out on October 23, and the Court will first have to approve the settlement on August 24- but as of right now, it seems that GTX 970 owners may find their wallets a bit more flush over the next few months.

TechNews - Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive - tech
(hx) 12:28 PM CEST - Jul,24 2016 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive designed for consumers - If you want an enormous drive that can hold an absolute ton of 4K videos, photos, and games, but you don't want to pay well over a thousand dollars, then you'll need a traditional hard disk drive. Step forward, Seagate, with the world's largest consumer hard drive: the 10TB Barracuda Pro. The $534.99 BarraCuda Pro is one of three new 10TB hard drives from Seagate's new Guardian series. The other two, the $469.99 IronWolf and $459.99 SkyHawk, are designed for NAS systems and video surveillance, respectively. The Pro, which is for ''everyday desktop computing and storage,'' spins at 7200 RPM, has a 220MB/s "sustained transfer rate" and comes with 256MB of cache. It also has a 300TB/year workload limit (in 24×7 operation) and a five-year warranty. There are non-Pro versions of the Barracuda available, which are presumably cheaper. These offer a slightly slower 210MB/s transfer rate, a 55TB/year workload limit, and a two-year warranty.
  • Official Unboxing Video Of Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition - Samsung is going for gold with its Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition handset, a specially themed Galaxy S7 Edge in celebration of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. It's available to purchase today at Best Buy, but if you're stuck at work and want to check out what it looks like, Samsung has released an unboxing video with glimpses of the customized apps and UI.
  • Gorilla Glass 5 Will Survive Drops From Up To 1.6 Meters - Reportedly debuting with the Galaxy Note 7, the newest generation of Gorilla Glass is expected to survive "1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time." It is probably still no match for beach sand, though.
  • Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 offers improved protection - Corning on Wednesday unveiled Gorilla Glass 5, the latest iteration of its popular cover glass that's said to further address a common concern among consumers: breakage from drops. Citing an 11-country survey, Corning points out that more than 85 percent of smartphone owners have drop their handset at least once a year with 55 percent saying they've done so a minimum of three times over the same period of time.  Indeed, cracked and shattered screens are a common occurrence in today's mobile-driven world. In the earlier days, scratches were just as much of an issue (if not more) although at this point, advancements in cover glass like those offered by Corning have largely eliminated the need for protective screen covers. Damage from drops, however, remains a pain point for the industry. In Corning's internal testing, the company said its Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80 percent of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters (between shoulder and waist height for the average person) onto rough surfaces.
  • Skype to Drop Support for Older Windows Phone Versions - Microsoft has said its Skype service will no longer be updated for Windows Phone 7 - 8.1 and older versions of Android and iOS. The company said it wants to "focus on the platforms of the future" which means it "must end support for some devices and operating systems." Skype will continue to support Windows 10 for Mobile, Windows 7, 8, XP, and Vista, Yosemite on Mac, iOS 8, and Android 4.03. Versions of Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android older than those named here will no longer be supported with updates. Skype says its service won't cease immediately on older platforms, but as the company continues to move Skype to the cloud, some features may become broken over time.
  • T-Mobile Gives Away Free Service in Brazil for Olympics - T-Mobile has said its postpaid customers will have access to free mobile data and calling in Brazil for the entire month of August in honor of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. T-Mobile customers will not have to take any action to enjoy free roaming in Brazil. Those who travel to Brazil will have unlimited high-seed data, unlimited calling to the U.S., and unlimited texting worldwide during their visit. T-Mobile said it is supplying the families of Olympic athletes with free T-Mobile service and a Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition handset through October. AT&T debuted its own roaming plan for Brazil earlier this summer, but it costs $50 to add to an existing service plan. About 100,000 Americans are expected to make the trip to Brazil to watch and participate in the games.
  • Verizon To Disconnect Data Hogs On Unlimited Data Plans - Are you one of those people that believe "unlimited" actually means "unlimited?" Apparently Verizon will be completely disconnecting users that consume more than 100GB of data a month unless they switch over to The Verizon Plan by August 31.
  • KickassTorrents shut down after alleged owner arrested in Poland - The most popular torrent site in the world, KickassTorrents, has gone offline today. The alleged owner has been arrested in Poland at the request of the United States governments, and domain names connected to the site have been seized. • Opera to Sell Browser Business to Chinese Firms for $600M - Opera Software today scrapped plans to sell its entire business to a consortium of Chinese companies and will instead sell to them its consumer browser business. The original deal, valued at $1.2 billion, would have seen a handful of China-based investment firms take over all of Opera's businesses. The deal was unable to win government approval in Opera's home country of Sweden and had to be scrapped. Opera and the firms in question reworked the deal to sell off Opera's browser business for $600 million. Under the terms of the deal, the consortium will get Opera's mobile browser, including versions co-branded by mobile network operators; Opera's desktop browser, and performance and privacy apps; Opera's technology licensing business; and Opera's 29.09% ownership of a nHorizon. The Chinese investment firms will be allowed to use the Opera brand on these consumer-facing products. Opera Software will hold onto its Opera Mediaworks, Opera Apps & Games, and Opera TV businesses. Opera CEO Lars Boilesen will serve as CEO for both Opera and the divested unit until December 31, after which he will remain with Opera Software. Opera believes this new transaction will be complete by the end of the third quarter.
  • Japan's SoftBank to Buy UK's ARM for $32 Billion - SoftBank today announced plans to buy ARM Holdings for $32 billion. SoftBank runs one of Japan's largest wireless networks and is the parent company of Sprint in the U.S., while ARM designs and licenses the Cortex-branded mobile processors often found in today's smartphones and tablets. SoftBank's board of directors has fully approved the acquisition, which will be made in all cash. ARM's board and shareholders have yet to approve the deal. SoftBank believes its existing business relationships around the world will expand ARM's ability to license its technology in new markets. SoftBank said it will help ARM to continue to innovate in order to push into new categories, such as the Internet of Things, by increasing investment in ARM's research and development. The company believes SoftBank and ARM share a common culture and long-term vision, and can together create a strong combined entity moving forward. SoftBank said it is committed to ARM's U.K. operations, where it will double the number of employees over the next five years. "ARM will be an excellent strategic fit within the SoftBank group as we invest to capture the very significant opportunities provided by the Internet of Things," said SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. The deal is expected to close by the end of the third quarter.

  • Huawei MateBook review: Going toe-to-toe with Surface - The main drawback to the MateBook for me is the keyboard, along with the lack of a way to prop up the device if a third party keyboard is used. I'd also recommend getting a model with 8GB RAM to anyone considering this purchase. Other than that, the Huawei MateBook is a wonderful device. It's clear that it was carefully crafted and it's well-designed.

  • T-Mobile Giving Away Galaxy On5, J7 to Families  -  T-Mobile is kicking off a new promotion that will let family plan subscribers score a free Samsung smartphone. The free phones are tied to specific service plans. Families who subscribe to T-Mobile's 6 GB Simple Choice plan pay $30 per month per line for service and can receive a free Samsung Galaxy On5 smartphone ($140 value). The $30 cost is applied to the first four members of the family, with additional lines costing $20 each per month. Similarly, families who subscribe to T-Mobile's 10 GB Simple Choice plan pay $40 per month per line for service and can receive a free Samsung Galaxy J7 smartphone ($240 value). The $40 cost is applied to the first four members of the family, with additional lines costing $30 each per month. In both cases, families can get up to 12 free phones. The price of the free phone is covered via monthly service credits over a period of two years. Once the two-year period is over, the customer owns the phone outright. Customers who cancel service before the two-year period is over will be responsible for the balance of the phone's cost. T-Mobile's back-to-school promotion begins July 13.
  • iPhone 7 design shown off in a new leaked video - The low resolution video comes from Dutch website TechTastic, who have a decent track record with leaks in the past. Most of the key design highlights seen in the leaked images of the iPhone 7 are also seen in the video, including the relocated antenna strips, protruding rear camera lens, and the same basic design that Apple has been using since 2014. However, unlike the leaked photos, the video does show the bottom of the handset as well. As rumored, the bottom does not include a 3.5mm headphone jack. That basically means you will no longer be able to directly connect your favorite pair of headphones with the new iPhone 7. Instead, you will need to use the Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adaptor.
  • One Year Later, Turing Phone Finally Ships - Turing Robotic Industries started taking preorders for its secure Turing Phone back in July 2015 with plans to ship in August. The company later promised to ship by December 2015, but it didn't. In February, Turing made a fundamental change to the device when it swapped the Android-based operating system for Jolla's SailfishOS 2.0. Now, a year after it first took preorders, Turing is shipping the Turing Phone. The phone itself is made of a liquid metal alloy that Turing claims is tougher than titanium and steel. The phone has a 5.5-inch full HD screen, quad-core Snapdragon processor with 3 GB of RAM, 13-megapixel camera, and s support for some U.S. LTE bands. The phone comes in five different models, the Turing Cardinal, Pharaoh, Beowulf, Dark Wyvern, and DW Glaedr. More so than the hardware, the Turing Phone is about providing secure communications, including encrypted messaging, email, and calls. Though it runs SailfishOS, the device will have access to the Google Play Store and Google Apps. Pricing starts at $610 for the standard model.
  • T-Mobile to Zero-Rate Pokemon for Weekly Tuesday Promo - T-Mobile says starting July 19 customers will be able to play Pokemon Go on their smartphone without impacting their monthly data allotment. T-Mobile is adding Pokemon Go to its T-Mobile Tuesday customer appreciation program. Customers will need to take action to get the free Pokemon data. First, customers need to download the T-Mobile Tuesdays app from the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store. Once signed in, customers can claim the free zero-rated use of Pokemon on T-Mobile Tuesdays July 19, July 26, August 2, and August 9. Once claimed, Pokemon usage will not touch customers' high-speed data plan through August 2017. The zero-rated Pokemon promo is only available to claim for the next four Tuesdays and goes away after August 9. Beyond the Pokemon promo, on Tuesday, July 19 T-Mobile customers can claim a free Lyft ride of up $15, a free Frosty at Wendy's, and 50% off select accessories. Last, T-Mobile says 250 people will win $100 in PokeCoins, and five people will win a Pokemon Go hunting trip for two anywhere in the U.S.
  • Mastercard Adds Retail Mobile Payments to Bank Apps - Android owners will soon be able to use their own mobile banking app - rather than Android Pay or Samsung Pay - to make tap-and-go payments in stores. Mastercard has expanded its Masterpass program to mobile devices so consumers can make contactless payments at various retailers. Mastercard first introduced Masterpass in 2014 to power in-app and online payments. Customer credit card data is stored in the cloud and tokenized for security, allowing people to make purchases with one click. Mastercard is extending Masterpass to its banking customers so those banks can add contactless payment capabilities to their own apps. Some of the first banks to support contactless payments include Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fifth Third Bank, KeyBank, People's United Bank, and Virginia Credit Union. Mastercard says 17 banks in total plan to add mobile payments to their apps in the near future. (One glaring omission at launch is JPMorgan Chase, which has so far shunned Android Pay. Chase is working on its own mobile payment service that has yet to launch.) Contactless, Masterpass payments will be available at more than 5 million retail locations across 77 countries that accept contactless payments via NFC. In the U.S., BJ's Wholesale Club will be among the first to support the bank-based mobile payment tool, with JetBlue, Saks, Lord and Taylor, Subway, and The Cheesecake Factory to follow shortly. It will be up to the individual supporting banks, such as Citi, to add contactless payments to their mobile apps.
