AMD Vega showcased running DOOM in 4K at 60fps - tech
(hx) 09:25 PM CET - Dec,13 2016 - Post a comment
Last Saturday, AMD held an event where several media folks attend a preview of the AMD Vega GPU. While the specifications of this GPU were not specified, but AMD demonstrated its new GPU running DOOM with Vulkan API on 4K resolution at 60 FPS with Ultra preset (no Nightmare). This unknown GPU was identified as "687F: C1" device, the same that appeared a few days ago with the AOTS benchmark throwing the same performance as the GeForce GTX 1080, knowing this time that the graphics card mounted 8GB HBM2 memory @ 500MHz giving a bandwidth of 512 GB / s. This AMD Vega graphics card will also be the forefront in terms of floating point performance: 25 TFLOPs (FP16) and 12.5 TFLOPs (FP32, single precision), compared to 11 TFLOPs (FP32) of the GTX TITAN X Pascal. Depending on the scene, the FPS generally ranged between 60 and 80, and rarely down to 50. It should be noted that Vega graphics card was not running DOOM with optimized drivers, so a little more debugging work with optimized drivers will lead to better performance.

AMD's biggest Radeon Software release yet brings a plethora of new features and across the board performance improvements. The 16.12.1 Crimson ReLive Edition package is available for download now. The new driver update is part of an annual AMD Radeon tradition which involves releasing a massive driver package as a holiday gift by the company to its user base every December. Last year the company completely overhauled the UI and graphics drivers for Radeon users replacing Catalyst with Crimson. The year prior, Radeon users received another mega driver update, called Catalyst Omega. Some of the new features that is assured to have many Radeon users excited include ReLive, a new in-house gameplay capture software akin to Nvidia’s Shadowplay. Radeon Chill, a new feature that reduces GPU temperatures and power consumption. Borderless Fullscreen Mode support for FreeSync. Expanded GPU compatibility of Radeon WattMan. HDR gaming support. A new user feedback page and a new Radeon Software Installer.

  • Galax GTX 1070 EXOC Sniper Review - Overall, the Galax GTX 1070 EXOC Sniper is a high performing card that delivers FPS and game experience results on par with the GTX 1070 cards. It runs cool and quiet and features a pretty unique RGB LED lighting assembly to make it stand out in the crowd. If you are looking for a new GTX 1070 video card for your next build, the Galax GTX 1070 EXOC SNIPER is a factory-overclocked card that does well for the $429 USD price point.
  • Anonabox Pro TOR VPN Router Review - Anyone who is not tech savvy enough to install TOR and/or VPNs on their laptops, or want a device to use with other mobile platforms, I would highly recommend the Anonabox Pro. For around $100 it offers peace of mind and, more importantly, security and privacy in the world we live in now, which is very much the opposite.
  • The best mice - Anyone spending hours on their computer every day will tell you that having the right tools at hand is serious business. • Qualcomm Debuts Snapdragon 835 and Quick Charge 4.0 - Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 835 processor, a collaborative effort with Samsung, and Quick Charge 4.0 for even faster battery charging. The Snapdragon 835 is now Qualcomm's top-of-the-line chip. Qualcomm decided to rely on Samsung's 10nm FinFET process technology for the chip, which introduces a number of performance upgrades over Samsung's 14nm process. For example, it allows processors to be up to 30% smaller while also improving speeds by 27% or dropping power consumption by 40%. The reduced footprint and boosted speed/power efficiency gives hardware makers more flexibility to create long-lasting and powerful devices. The Snapdragon 835 is already in development and Qualcomm expects to see it in flagship designs during the first half of 2017. Quick Charge 4.0 was created with the Snapdragon 835 in mind. Critically, Quick Charge 4.0 officially supports the USB-C port that's becoming more widely available on today's high-end devices, as well as USB-PD (Power Delivery). Qualcomm said its goal in developing the technology was to deliver faster charges more efficiently. Quick Charge 4.0 was engineered to push five or more hours of use into a battery with only five minutes of charging. It relies on what Qualcomm calls Dual Charge, a parallel charging technique, to deliver 20% quicker charging with a 30% higher efficiency rating when compared to Quick Charge 3.0. Qualcomm expects Quick Charge 4.0 to reach devices alongside the Snapdragon 835 during the first half of 2017.
  • Apple to Charge $149 to Repair 'Touch Disease' Afflicted iPhones  - Apple has launched a repair program for the iPhone 6 Plus to fix what has become called touch disease. The issue, according to a class-action lawsuit filed against Apple, leaves the display unresponsive to finger-touch input. "Apple has determined that some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or Multi-Touch issues after being dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device," said Apple on its web site. "If your iPhone 6 Plus is exhibiting the symptoms noted above, is in working order, and the screen is not cracked or broken, Apple will repair your device for a service price of $149." Owners of the iPhone 6 Plus who've already paid for a screen repair to resolve this issue will be refunded the difference between the price they paid for the original service and the new $149 repair amount. Apple's carrier partners are not participating in this program, so any and all repairs need to go through Apple directly.

  • 360-Degree Video Playback Comes To VLC, VR Headset Support Coming 2017 - New test versions of VLC for Windows and Macintosh computers can be downloaded from the VLC website for free. The apps can play 360 videos as well as 360 photos and panorama shots; users can pan through these videos with the help of their mouse or keyboard. Videolan, the non-profit organization that has been developing VLC as an open source project, cooperated with VR camera developer Giroptic to add 360-degree video support to VLC. "VLC is one of the video players most widely used in the world," said Richard Ollier, co-founder and CEO of Giroptic. "This will allow the millions of VLC users to take full advantage of a promising new technology and be widely involved in its democratization."
  • Google Translate starts using neural machine translation - Google today said that it's improving translations that are available through its Google Translate service for nine languages by using neural machine translation, a method that was recently implemented for translations from Chinese to English. The improvements work for English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Google started rolling out the new system in the past couple of days, Google Translate's product lead Barak Turovsky said during a media briefing at a Google office in San Francisco.
  • Google Releases Final Preview of Android 7.1 - Google has made an update to the Android 7.1 Developer Preview available to developers. Registered developers can download the refreshed operating system to their Nexus 6P or 5X smartphones, as well as the Nexus 9 and Pixel C tablets. System images for side loading are already available online, and the over-the-air downloads will appear within the next week. The most obvious new feature for end users is support for GIFs and animations within the keyboard. The Android keyboard can interact with third-party apps to create and apply stickers, videos, and other expressive content. Android 7.1 also adopts a 3D Touch-style interactive tool that will let people access up to five secondary actions or settings that can be reached directly from the launcher. Google calls this second preview "release ready" and says developers should rely on it to test their apps. Google expects to roll out Android 7.1.1 to the full lineup of supported devices, as well as Pixel and Pixel XL handsets, in December.
  • Ransomware Spreading via Images on Social Networks - An Israeli security firm called Checkpoint has dubbed a new outbreak of ransomware as 'ImageGate'. They’re now warning of dangerous malware which spreads through social media platforms as images that lock your computer when clicked. The software responsible is called 'Locky' and was discovered earlier this year. It encrypts the user’s files and then demands a ransom in order to unlock them again. The price being demanded for a key is 0.5 bitcoins, valued at roughly $365.
  • Nearly 3 Million Android Phones Vulnerable To OTA Update Hijacking - It's another day, and another backdoor Android exploit has been discovered. At the center of the discussion this time around is the Ragentek firmware used on a number of Android smartphones. Researchers from BitSight Technologies discovered two internet domains that were hardwired into the firmware. Until recently these domains were unregistered, so BitSight took it upon itself to register the domains to do a bit of testing. With BitSight now in possessions of the domains, it discovered that 2.8 million unique devices have sought to connect using the exploit. The firmware dangerously allows apps with escalated privileges to be installed, with BitSight writing, "The fact that the device reached out to defined head-ends immediately after initialization implies that the devices are affected by this issue out of the box, and were not subsequently compromised through other means, such as through a subsequent update." The man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) that is possible with this type of exploit is compounded by the fact that Ragentek does not encrypt communications sent to and from affected Android devices. Even more damning is the fact that code-signing is also not employed, which would allow a remote attacker to execute malicious code with root privileges using the over-the-air update mechanism. Of the nearly 3 million Android devices that are affected, 55 different models are caught up in the mix.
  • Google Play Services to Drop Support for Gingerbread - Google has said the next iteration of Google Play Services will sever backward compatibility with devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Today, Google Play Services — the core code behind app compatibility across Android platforms — is 10.0.0 and supports API level 9. The move to Google Play Services 10.2.0, expected in early 2017, will jump from API level 9 to API level 14. This means Play Services 10.2.0 will support Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich and up, leaving Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices behind. "The Gingerbread platform is almost six years old. Many Android developers have already discontinued support for Gingerbread in their apps," explained Google in a blog post. "This helps them build better apps that make use of the newer capabilities of the Android platform. For us, the situation is the same. By making this change, we will be able to provide a more robust collection of tools for Android developers with greater speed." At last check, only 1.3% of all devices accessing the Google Play Store were still running Gingerbread. The majority of devices are running Android 4.4 KitKat (25.2%), Android 5.x Lollipop (34.1%), or Android 6.x Marshmallow (24%). The change in API level support will not impact that many devices. Google says developers can either move forward and target API level 14 at a minimum, or offer multiple APKs via the Play Store to support both older and newer devices. This latter method will not include support for newer APIs, however, and may occasionally lead to broken or non-functioning apps. Google Play Services is updated automatically across Android devices once every couple of months
  • Instagram Intros Live Video and Disappearing Photos - Instagram has announced two new features for its mobile app that expand how people can share photos and videos. First, the social network is marking the debut of live video within Instagram Stories. Users can now broadcast live video to their followers through the Stories section of the app. Followers may opt to receive notifications when people share live video, and live video will be visibly earmarked as such. People will be able to leave comments throughout the video's duration, but live video is not stored or saved in users' feeds. Instagram says live video will be added to the Explore tab, too, allowing people to browse through live video that's being shared from around the world. In a move to combat Snapchat, Instagram is now allowing users to send disappearing photos and videos through its Direct Message function. Ephemeral media can be sent to individuals as well as groups, and creators will know when their photo/video has been seen and/or screen-captured. Once the content is viewed by the recipient, it disappears from the recipient's inbox and cannot be replayed. Instagram says disappearing photos and videos can only be sent to people who follow you. Disappearing content shared with groups will allow members to all see comments and responses. Instagram says the live video tool is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, while the disappearing photo/video feature is reaching all users today. Instagram is free to download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
  • YouTube Brings Blocking Tool to Kids App - Google has updated its YouTube Kids application and gave parents a little bit more control over the content that's available to their youngsters. The latest version of the app lets parents block videos or channels when they are signed into the app. Google says videos and channels that are blocked in YouTube Kids will remain blocked across all devices as long as the parent is signed into their account on each device. Parents can choose to unblock videos one at a time, or all at once. Video and channel blocking is available to YouTube Kids in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and a handful of South America, African, and Asian countries.

Nvidia GeForce 375.95 Hot Fix Driver - tech
(hx) 03:09 PM CET - Nov,18 2016 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has recently released a new driver for its graphics cards. However, this driver introduced an issue for owners of factory-overclocked Pascal cards. According to reports, this driver prevented these Pascal cards to push VRAM clocks above 810MHz. NVIDIA was quick to react and released today a hotfix driver that addresses this particular issue. In addition, Arkane Studios recommends this brand new driver for Dishonored 2, so there may be some additional optimizations for this particular title. I also suggest owners of other NVIDIA cards to skip the NVIDIA GeForce 375.86 WHQL driver and download this brand new hotfix driver.

Microsoft announces $299 virtual reality headsets - tech
(hx) 05:52 PM CEST - Oct,27 2016 - Post a comment
VR just got a lot cheaper. Microsoft on Wednesday morning said PC OEMs will soon be shipping VR headsets that enable virtual reality and mixed reality starting at $299. Details of the hardware and how it works were sparse, but Microsoft said HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer will be shipping the headsets timed with its upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update, due in spring 2017. Despite the relatively low price, the upcoming headsets may have a big advantage over HTC and Valve's Vive and Facebook's Oculus Rift: no need for separate calibration hardware to function. Both Vive and Oculus require multiple emitters on stands to be placed around a room for the positioning to function.

Microsoft didn’t say how the headsets would work exactly but one can extrapolate that some of the technology is borrowed from its augmented reality HoloLens, which scans a room when first turned on. The new 'accessories' also seem to function similarly to the HoloLens by reading a user’s hand gestures without the need for external controllers like those used by the Vive and Oculus Rift. Whether the technology can match the precision of the Vive and Oculus Rift is still to be determined but the price is certainly going to lift consumer eyebrows. The Valve-designed and HTC-built Vive and Facebook’s Oculus Rift with its Touch controllers each cost $800. With leading PC OEMs offering a competitive product at $300, there’s a good chance Microsoft’s initiative will shake up the market.

Xiaomi today announced the Mi Note 2, a high-end flagship phone with curved glass surfaces similar to the Galaxy Note 7. The device features an aluminum frame sandwiched between two pieces of shaped glass. The premium metal-and-glass materials are complimented by top specs. The phone has a 5.7-inch full HD screen and a Snapdragon 821 processor with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The phone relies on a 23-megapixel Sony Exmor IMX318 sensor with 1.55micron pixels and an aperture of f/2.0. The camera captures video up to 4K and includes electronic image stabilization, but not optical images stabilization. The front cam snags 8-megapixel images at f/2.4, but is unique in that it includes auto-focus for sharper selfies. Xiaomi packed a 4,070mAh battery into the Mi Note 2 and it supports Quick Charge 3.0 for rapid power ups. The phone comes in several variants, including a world version with wide support for U.S. LTE bands. It runs Android, but the user interface is dominated by the MIUI. The Mi Note 2 goes on sale in November 1. Pricing for the world variant is about $500, with other models costing closer to $400. The Mi Note 2 will only be sold in China; Xiaomi says it made the multi-LTE band variant specifically for its China-based customers who often travel to the U.S.

Blizzard Finally Introduces Native Voice Chat - tech
(hx) 05:18 PM CEST - Oct,24 2016 - Post a comment
Blizzard gamers have an alternative to Skype or Ventrilo now, as the company has launched a built-in voice chat service. The article claims that the voice quality is "remarkable," but you can judge for yourself by simply updating Battle.net to get the feature.
The company has been trying to introduce some form of voice chat into its ecosystem for a while now. There’s been a decent but limited voice chat implementation in World of Warcraft for a long time, but that was only available inside of the MMORPG. But as of right now, everyone using the latest version of the Battle.net app can jump in and use voice chat with friends across all of Blizzard’s titles – and outside of them as well. All a user needs to do is update the Battle.net app to version 1.5.1, Build 8098, or newer. After logging in, you’ll be prompted with a new pop-up informing users that Voice Chat is now available. To enable it, simply head over to the friends list, create a channel with some friends and click on headphone icon.

  • Part 1: DirectX 11 Gaming And Multi-Core CPU Scaling - The chaps over at THG have tested five theoretical Intel CPUs in 10 different DirectX 11-based games to determine what impact core count has on performance.
  • Seagate Announces BarraCuda ST5000 - Seagate has just announced its new BarraCuda ST5000, which bumps the maximum storage capacity of its 2.5-inch mobile hard drive from 4TB to an impressive 5TB. Seagate was able to achieve this feat using its new 2.5-inch 1TB platters that were first announced in January. For those that don't need a staggering 5TB at their disposal, cheaper 4TB (ST4000) and 3TB (ST3000) versions will also be offered. All of the drives in the new BarraCuda family spin at 5400RPM and have 128MB of cache onboard. However, beware that the BarraCuda ST5000, ST4000, and ST3000 all have a 15mm z-height, which means that you won't be cramming these drives into most notebooks (with the exception of massive gaming notebooks). Seagate says that drives are destined to go into all-in-one PCs and ultra-slim desktops that need to provide a lot of storage, but don't have enough room to fit a 3.5-inch hard drive. You can also expect to see these drives pop up in external enclosures. Seagate also announced a new 2TB FireCuda drive that includes 8GB of flash onboard to improve boot times and help you load applications faster
  • The Samsung 960 Pro (2TB) SSD Review - The $1299 MSRP on the 2TB 960 Pro is almost as shocking as the $1499 MSRP for the 4TB 850 EVO was. This drive is not for everyone, though it might be coveted by everyone. But for those who have the money, the price per gigabyte is not outlandish. Aside from Intel's TLC-based SSD 600p, PCIe SSDs currently start around $0.50/GB, and at $0.63/GB the 960 Pro is more expensive than the Plextor M8Pe but cheaper than the Intel SSD 750 or the OCZ RD400A. Samsung is by no means price gouging and they could justify charging even more based on the performance and efficiency advantages the 960 Pro has over the competitors. The 960 Pro and 960 EVO are not yet listed on Amazon and are only listed as "Coming Soon" with no price on Newegg, but they can be pre-ordered direct from Samsung with an estimated ship time of 2-4 weeks.
  • Samsung Kicks Off Production of 10nm SoCs - Samsung has said it has begun producing systems-on-a-chip using its 10nm FinFET process. The SoCs will eventually be used in application processors for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. Samsung's 10nm FinFET process relies on 3D transistors and new methods such as triple-patterning to generate significant improvements over its 14nm process. For example, SoCs made with the 10nm process are 30% smaller, require 40% less power, and can boost performance by up to 27%. Samsung believes the first devices to rely on its 10nm FinFET process will reach the market it early 2017, with more to follow throughout the year.
  • Qualcomm Intros New Snapdragon 600 and 400 Processors - Qualcomm today announced new Snapdragon application processors for mid-range and volume mobile devices. The Snapdragon 653, Snapdragon 626, and Snapdragon 427 are all paired with Qualcomm's X9 LTE modem with Cat 7 download (300Mbps) and Cat 13 upload (150Mbps) speeds; 2x20 MHz Carrier Aggregation; 64-QAM on the uplink; and VoLTE with Enhanced Voice Services. The Snapdragon 653 improves upon the Snapdragon 652 with faster CPU/GPU performance and double the RAM (now 8 GB). The Snapdragon 626 improves upon the Snapdragon 625 with quicker CPU performance, a better antenna, and wider software compatibility. The Snapdragon 427 is an update to the Snapdragon 425 with better CPU/GPU speeds and Qualcomm's TruSignal antenna tuning. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 653 and 626 will reach mobile devices before the end of the year, but the 427 won't arrive until early 2017.
  • iPhone 7 Plus Intel Modem Not Equal to Qualcomm Modem - Under poor network conditions, the iPhone 7 Plus with Intel inside does not perform as well as the iPhone 7 Plus with Qualcomm inside. Apple sourced the iPhone 7 Plus modem from both Intel and Qualcomm. This represents a major change for the company, which has relied solely on Qualcomm modems for years. The Intel modem (XMM7360) is found in the AT&T and T-Mobile variants of the iPhone 7, while the Qualcomm modem (MDM9645M) is found in the Sprint, Verizon, and unlocked variants of the iPhone 7. Cellular Insights conducted extensive signal tests on the iPhone 7 Plus in LTE Bands 12, 7, and 4 to see if any performance differences exist between the two modems. Under optimal network conditions both the Intel- and Qualcomm-equipped iPhones demonstrated an equal level of performance in speed and maintaining a connection. Under weak network conditions, however, the Intel-equipped iPhone 7 Plus posted speeds that were on average 30% slower than those of the Qualcomm-equipped iPhone 7 Plus. The slower speeds at the cell edge mean the Intel-based iPhone 7 Plus may be more likely to experience dropped VoLTE calls and other, similar behaviors. "In all tests, the iPhone 7 Plus with the Qualcomm modem had a significant performance edge over the iPhone 7 Plus with the Intel modem," said Cellular Insights in its report. Apple has not said why it selected modems from two separate suppliers for the iPhone 7 Plus.
  • Apple Releases iOS 10.0.3 to Resolve iPhone 7 Connectivity Bug - Apple today made iOS 10.0.3 available to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. This update is targeted at Apple's newest iPhones and resolves an issue that impacted cellular connectivity. Apple recommends all iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus owners apply the update when possible.
  • Phone 7 bursts into flames, destroys vehicle - A south coast surfer says his iPhone 7 burst into flames and destroyed his car. Mat Jones says he had left the phone under clothes in his car while taking a surf lesson. When he returned, he was shocked to discover the vehicle filled with smoke. The tech giant Apple wouldn't comment but said they were aware of the complaint and they are investigating. It follows concerns in the past few weeks from Samsung Galaxy Note 7 owners about their phones catching fire.
  • Samsung to Reward Note7 Owners' Loyalty with Cash - Samsung is offering a cash incentive to Galaxy Note7 owners if they stick with the Samsung brand. U.S. consumers who exchange their Note7 for any other Samsung handset will be rewarded with $100 in bill credits. Consumers who exchange their Note7 for a phone made by another company will be given $25 in bill credits. The financial incentive arrives as Samsung expands its recall of the Note7 to all devices, both the original and the replacement. The number of Note7s being recalled in the U.S. stands at about 1.9 million. Samsung hasn't said how many have even returned/exchanged. "We appreciate the patience of our consumers, carriers, and retail partners for carrying the burden during these challenging times," said Samsung Electronics America COO Tim Baxter. "We are committed to doing everything we can to make this right." There have been 96 documented cases of the Note7 overheating in the U.S., according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, with 15 of those coming from supposed safe devices.

The phone will also include a self-adhesive rear panel so it sticks to surfaces like car dashboards without help. Thousands of voters selected from dozens of initial entries that were narrowed down to five entries this week. "We are overwhelmed with the amount of consumer participation and positive reception to Project CSX," said Lixin Cheng, chairman and CEO of ZTE USA. "As the first smartphone manufacturer to take on crowdsourcing its next mobile device from start to finish, we are proud of how this project pushed the envelope, and that consumers from around the world have chosen to be part of this industry-disrupting process." The eye-controlled, self-adhesive phone won with 36% of the vote. ZTE will work with the winner to design, engineer, and manufacture the device, which it hopes to bring to market by late 2017.

  • Why Was Half The Internet Down This Morning? - Twitter, Spotify and Reddit, and a huge swath of other websites were down or screwed up this morning. This was happening as hackers unleashed a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the servers of Dyn, a major DNS host. It's probably safe to assume that the two situations are related.  Domain Name Servers (DNS) act as the Internet's phone book. Basically, they facilitate your request to go to a certain webpage and make sure you are taken to the right place. If the DNS provider that handles requests for Twitter is down, well, good luck getting to Twitter. Some websites are coming back for some users, but it doesn't look like the problem is fully resolved. Dyn posted this update on its website: "Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available."

  • Microsoft Debuts Skype Sign-In Across Services  - Microsoft has made it possible for Skype users to sign into other Microsoft services with their Skype username and password. For example, people who have Skype credentials will be able to use them to log into Xbox, Office, or OneDrive. Moreover, people will be able to use those services across devices and platforms with this new single sign-in, negating the need to enter separate usernames and passwords for each Microsoft service across their devices. Microsoft is now wholly managing the Skype sign-in screen, password change, and account recovery flow, but none of these changes impact how people access and use Skype. Microsoft says the single sign-in tool will be available in the newest versions of the Skype app across platforms in the days ahead.
  • New Android Malware asks for a selfie as it steals your information - McAfee Labs' Mobile Research Team discovered the malicious application, which is a new variant of the Acecard Trojan Malware (aka Torec) that was first identified back in February. In addition to asking for credit card details and information such as "mother's maiden name," the updated app offers "identify confirmation," which involves uploading photos of identity documents such as a driver's license along with a selfie of the gullible user holding the ID.  As is the case with many Trojans, Acecard installs itself by tricking the user into thinking they're installing a video codec/plugin or app for watching adult videos. Once it's on the Android device, the malware asks for administrator privileges, before running in the background while monitoring specific apps. Acecard then shows a phishing overlay that pretends to be Google Play asking for a credit card number. This is followed by requests for name, date of birth, phone number, card expiration date, and CCV. It will also request second-factor authentication for some cards. Anyone who lives in Hong Kong will be asked for a copy of their HK ID card, while Singapore residents must add their National Registration card and passport.
  • CryPy ransomware encrypts your files with a unique key for each one - The malware was found in a security flaw in a content management system called Magento, which allowed perpetrators to utilize a PHP shell script to a vulnerable web server in Israel, which now acts as the Command & Control (C&C) server of the CryPy ransomware. Moreover, the C&C server isn't used only for ransomware attacks; the server is also utilized to conduct phishing attacks, which are usually fake PayPal messages. It is believed that the malware developers are Hebrew-speaking. CryPy is composed of two files, namely 'boot_common.py,' and 'encryptor.py.' The former is responsible for error-logging on the Windows platform, while the latter is the encryptor itself. Once a system has been infected, the ransomware disables Registry Tools, Task Manager, CMD, and Run, which are the usual features used to control and terminate malware. Soon after, it will start encrypting files. Typical ransomware encrypts all files of a system, then assigns a unique key for it, so when the developers demand money from victims, they can track the infected system. However, CryPy makes it a lot more difficult for its prey by assigning a unique key for each file that it encrypts.

Nvidia has just updated its GeForce drivers to be 'game ready' for Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Civilization VI, Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, and Ubisoft's Eagle Flight. The green team provides a bit more blurb on the included driver optimisations thanks to its regular blog posts and accompanying PDF documentation. It is also good to see some recommended specs with corresponding GPUs for the likes of Titanfall 2. Battlefield 1 went live today for the masses and Nvidia recommends you "gear up" with at least a GeForce GTX 1060 3GB card to enjoy it at 60FPS, at 1920x1080, with high graphical details. Titanfall 2 is still a week from release but Nvidia already has assessed the game at resolutions up to 4K, running at 60FPS.

NVIDIA's GTX 1050 graphics card starts at $109 - tech
(hx) 08:55 AM CEST - Oct,19 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
When it comes to shopping for PC gaming hardware, there are often three types of consumers -- hardcore, budget, and those that fall in between. Hardcore gamers will spend massive amounts of money to get the absolute best performance. Budget gamers, however, aim for respectable specifications at affordable prices. If you fall into the budget category, today, NVIDIA announces two new graphics cards that will make you very excited -- GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti. While neither card is top of the line, they should be able to achieve solid performance at 1080p. Best of all? The 1050 starts at a super-low $109.

The GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti flank AMD's similarly priced Radeon RX 460, though instead of just differing in the amount of onboard memory (the RX 460 comes in 2GB and 4GB models), they offer different levels of performance. Both are built around Nvidia's GP107 graphics processor, manufactured on Samsung's 14nm FinFET process. It has a die size of 135mm^2, 3.3 billion transistors, and a 128-bit memory interface. Both cards using the GP107 will have 32 ROPs. The GTX 1050 wields 640 CUDA cores with a base clock of 1,354MHz and boost clock of 1,455MHz, and of course some of Nvidia's hardware partners are goosing those clocks for faster performance. It also has 2GB of GDDR5 memory at 7Gbps, resulting in 112GB/s of memory bandwidth. For $30 more, the GTX 1050 Ti bumps up the CUDA core count to 768 and doubles memory to 4GB, which is also not surprisingly GDDR5 on a 128-bit bus. Clockspeeds are a little slower at 1,290MHz and 1,392MHz for the base and boost, respectively, but overall it's the higher performing card. It's also the one that could be end up being compatible with the recently lowered Oculus Rift hardware requirements—Nvidia and Oculus are in the process of testing the GTX 1050 Ti to see if that's the case.

These cards only draw 75W of power. Neither one needs a PCIe power connection, and with the reference measurements putting both the GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti at just 5.7 inches long.

  • Microsoft Surface keyboard and mouse suggest AIO Surface PC is on the way - Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Surface event is taking place October 26. Expect to see the Surface keyboard and mouse to be unveiled, along with at least one all-in-one Surface-branded PC. There will also be plenty of announcements relating to Windows 10 and Xbox. Microsoft may not refresh its Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book devices at this event however. Rumors of an all-in-one Surface computer have been circling for a while after evidence appeared suggesting that Microsoft would reveal Surface-branded PC accessories and an AIO PC soon – at the hardware event we've now have confirmed will take place later this month.
  • Sharp showcases concept smartphone with gorgeous rounded, bezel-less display - Sharp at the CEATECH 2016 trade show in Japan this week unveiled an intriguing smartphone it’s calling the Corner R. The handset’s internal hardware specs are irrelevant – it’s the display that has the Internet talking today. The Corner R features a 5.2-inch full HD IGZO LCD that utilizes Free-Form Display technology meaning it can be cut into various shapes. Besides the fact that it’s nearly bezel-less, what really makes the display pop is its truly rounded corners and button-free design (the buttons on the bottom are virtual).

  • OEMs won't be able to sell PCs with Win7 / 8.1 starting November - Windows 7, arguably Microsoft's best release of Windows, along with the less popular Windows 8.1 won't come installed on large OEM PCs after October 31, 2016. The move comes as Windows 7 rapidly excels towards its end of extended supported, which will occur at the beginning of 2020, having already lost mainstream support at the start of 2015. Just like each operating system has a date that it stops receiving updates, there is also an end-of-sale date, the date until when large OEMs can continue pre-installing a version of Windows. In the case of Windows 7, it was already meant to have stopped being pre-installed, but Microsoft allowed the Professional edition an additional two years until October 31, 2016. Now time has almost run out for both Windows 7 and 8.1 as their end-of-sale dates approach.

  • Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note7 Causes Fire On Plane - A Samsung Galaxy Note 7 caught fire on a Southwest Airlines flight in Louisville, Ky., this morning, forcing the plane to be evacuated and causing damage to the plane's carpeting. The owner, Brian Green, says the Note7 was a replacement device with a marked box indicating the phone was safe. He swapped out his original Note7 at an AT&T store on Sept. 21. Replacement phones are supposed to have safe batteries and pose no risk of fire. The phone was powered down in Green's pocket when it overheated. Green tossed the phone on the floor where it began to emit smoke and eventually caught fire. The plane was still at the gate and Southwest evacuated the aircraft. No one was injured. Samsung initially expressed doubt about the phone's status as a replacement, but said it will work with authorities to determine the cause of the fire. Samsung was forced to recall the Note7 last month amid instances of it burning owners and igniting fires.
  • Samsung to Buy AI Startup - Samsung has said it has agreed to purchase Viv, an artificial intelligence startup run by the team that originally developed Apple's Siri. Siri's creators left Apple to form Viv, which is based in San Jose. Samsung plans to add Viv's artificial intelligence technology to its own Galaxy smartphones and other consumer electronics products. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Samsung did not explain if Viv will have its own personality, or if it will be baked into Samsung's S Voice app, which is already on its phones. Samsung wants to ensure its devices can compete with the voice-activated personal assistants available on products from Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon
  • Google Chrome for Android Becomes More Efficient - Google has updated its Chrome browser for Android devices with new tools to help reduce data usage, download pages for offline use, and discover more personalized content. To start, Data Saver has expanded to video. The Data Saver tool was built into Chrome earlier this year, but until today it only targeted text and images; now, it also compresses video to reduce data over cellular networks. Google says its compression technology allows Android users to save up to 67% on data consumption when viewing MP4 format videos through Chrome. Data Saver can sense slow or limited connections, and will automatically optimize HTTP web sites down to their essentials for faster loading. The new download feature is meant to help people save web sites and other online content for later. A button added to the browser makes it simpler to download web pages, music, pictures, or video. Downloads that fail due to network interruptions will automatically resume once connectivity is restored. Further, a new section in Chrome houses users' downloaded content so it can be retrieved quickly. (Downloads will first be available in Chrome beta.) Last, Chrome will begin to recommend web sites when people open new tabs in Chrome. Google says it will recommend fresh content, the latest news, as well as help people find their saved pages, images, and video. The more people use Chrome, the more personalized the recommendations will be. Google Chrome is free to download from the Google Play Store.

Since then, Finland convicted Julius Kivimaki of over 50,000 counts of cyber-crime, including harassment, fraud, and data breaches. Wednesday, two 19-year-old men, Zachary Buchta of Fallston, Md., and Bradley Jan Willem van Rooy of Leiden, the Netherlands, were charged in Chicago with conspiring to cause damage to protected computers. The charge carries a 10-year maximum sentence in prison. Both operated under the monikers of "Lizard Squad" and "PoodleCorp," and did way more than just inconvenience gamers over the 2014 holiday. The investigation began after authorities discovered phonebomber.net, a website that allowed paying customers to send repeated harassing phone calls from spoof numbers to the target of their choice. Soon after came thousands denial-of-service attacks and attacks that targeted various companies in the gaming, entertainment, and media sphere. Lizard Squad made even bigger waves when it hacked Taylor Swift's Twitter account. According to the criminal complaint, Buchta and van Rooy also conspired with other members of Lizard Squad to run cyber-attack-for-hire websites and trafficked stolen payment card account information for thousands of victims. In addition, the federal court in Chicago ordered the seizure of four domain names it believes are highly connected with the illegal activities outlined above, such as shenron.lizardsquad.org, lizardsquad.org, stresser.poodlecorp.org, and poodlecorp.org.

  • Facebook's New Marketplace Is Your Online Garage Sale - Facebook has announced Marketplace, a dedicated place for people to sell and buy goods in their local community. Marketplace is an evolution of swap-and-sell services that have sprung up within Facebook Groups over the last few years. Facebook Marketplace is a more legitimate tool meant to help users discover, buy, and sell items with friends and neighbors. It competes with services such as Craigslist. Marketplace is located front-and-center in the main Facebook app. People can browse through Marketplace or search for specific items via categories such as electronics or furniture. Tools allow people to search in specific neighborhoods or towns, and on the flip side sellers can set the general location of their items without giving away their home address. Interested buyers can reach out to sellers through the Marketplace app to communicate about availability and price, as well as arrange drop-offs and/or pick-ups. Facebook says it does not facilitate payments or deliveries, which is up to individual buyers/sellers. Facebook Marketplace is rolling out to Android and iOS users in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Facebook says other markets will follow over time.

  • Elon Musk Explains The SpaceX Interplanetary Transport System - SpaceX Founder, CEO, and Lead Designer Elon Musk discussed his plans for a permanent, self-sustaining human presence on Mars and the technical challenges that need to be solved in order to support a long-term presence on the red planet. Musk estimated that, using traditional methods, it would cost $10 billion per person to travel to Mars, and he wants that figure to drop to roughly $200,000 per person. Eventually, the cost of a Mars move will be below $100,000, Musk said. A large part of lowering that cost is creating spaceships with reusable parts, Musk said. The ITS' in-orbit refueling stage is crucial to SpaceX's plans, since it lowers fuel expenditures at liftoff and features fully reusable boosters, tankers and ships. Each booster can be used 1,000 times; each tanker 100 times and each ship 12 times.
