Today Nvidia revealed its new Nvidia Shield streamer, and they followed up with a series of trailer boasting its abilities. In particular, the one dedicated to the GeForce Now cloud gaming service boasts '4X Faster Gameplay' than next-gen consoles (Whatever a next-gen console is nowadays, I guess), by streaming 1080p games at 60 FPS. The shield is available for pre-order in two versions, 16 GB for $199.99, and 500, GB for $299.99. Besides streaming games with GeForce Now, the Shield can also run dedicated Android games natively, and stream media in 4K HDR.

AMD is working on FreeSync 2 - tech
(hx) 10:47 PM CET - Jan,03 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
It appears that AMD is currently working on FreeSync 2, however there is a catch. FreeSync 2 is a brand new technology that has nothing to do with the first FreeSync. While the first FreeSync puts an end to choppy gameplay and broken frames with fluid, artifact-free performance at virtually any framerate, FreeSync 2 is a new technology that will automatically switch your monitor into HDR mode.

  • Intel Core i7-7700K gets overclocked beyond 7 GHz - Professional overclocker Allen "Splave" Golibersuch has managed to overclock a sample Intel "Kaby Lake" Core i7-7700K processor to beyond 7 GHz. However, it should be noted that the overclocker managed to achieve a stable 7 GHz+ overclock only by disabling HyperThreading as well as two of the four physical cores of the processor. The overclocker hasn't mentioned anything regarding the cooling in his blog post, so it isn't clear if he used dry ice or liquid nitrogen to overclock the Core i7-7700K. If you're curious, the 7022.96 MHz overclock was achieved on an ASRock Z170 OC Formula motherboard with a 69x multiplier and a base-clock of 101.78 MHz. Unsurprisingly, it took a high 2.00V Vcore voltage to achieve the high overclock. As for performance numbers, the processor finished PiFast in 9.02 seconds, SuperPi 32M in 4 minute 20.25 seconds, wPrime 32M in 2.953 seconds, and wPrime 1024M in 1 minute 33.171 seconds. The overclocked Core i7-7700K, combined with an ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX OC graphics card, managed a score of 643,316 points in Aquamark and 86,798 points in the 3DMark 05 graphics benchmark.

"As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than [December 31]," said the company in a blog post. "The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally." Devices that run Cyanogen OS, including the OnePlus One, will no longer receive updates from Cyanogen. Cyanogen hoped to offer a better version of Android than Google's build, but it saw little traction in the market.
  • Samsung Releases Focus, a Combined Email and Calendar App - Samsung recently made a new productivity app called Samsung Focus available to its Android devices. Focus handles basic productivity functions, including email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and memos all in a single application. Focus supports Exchange, IMAP, and POP email services with functions such as push synchronization (email, contacts, calendar events) and support for multiple accounts. People will be able to use their Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Exchange, Office 365, IBM Notes, and other email services with Focus. Users can easily join conference calls and add tasks/events from emails, and take advantage of unified search across all the functions. Samsung Focus is free to download from the Google Play Store for Samsung smartphones running Android 6.0.1 and up.
  • Text message sends iOS' Messages into an endless crash loop - A recently discovered bug in Apple's iOS can crash and disable the Messages app on all iPhone models with a single text message - yes, another one. The new exploit was discovered by hacker vincedes3, and requires a special vCard attached to a message, which permanently crashes the Messages app when opened - restarting the app doesn't work nor does a hard reboot because Messages always tries to open the most recent text, sending the app into an inescapable crash loop.

  • Smart TVs aren't immune to ransomware - Security experts for years have been warning consumers that smart TVs are a prime target for hackers. Aside from the fact that sets with microphones and cameras can serve as excellent eavesdropping devices, we're now seeing connected TVs being hit with ransomware. As Bleeping Computer highlights, software engineer Darren Cauthon recently posted a photo on Twitter of a family member's LG smart TV (model 50GA6400) that had been bricked by Android malware. Based on the image, the publication believes the set was infected with a version of the Cyber.Police ransomware, sometimes referred to as FLocker, Frantic Locker or Dogspectus. The set in question is said to be one of the last models running Google TV before LG switched to webOS. Cauthon said he originally purchased the set for himself before passing it along to a family member. The hacker demanded $500 to unlock the set but Cauthon wasn't going to pay. Instead, he attempted to reset the TV to its factory condition but was unable to do so. He then reached out to LG for help. Rather than instruct him on how to perform the factory reset, LG told him to take the set to a local service center where he would be charged a whopping $340. At that price, it'd probably be cheaper to buy a new TV outright.

HITMAN in 4K with +60fps on NVIDIA Quadro P6000 - tech
(hx) 09:04 PM CET - Dec,30 2016 - Post a comment
A few days ago, HotHardware benchmarked this new graphics cards. And from the looks of it, the new NVIDIA Quadro P6000 outperforms the Titan X Pascal in both 3DMark and HITMAN. As said, both the Quadro P6000 and the Quadro P5000 are meant for workstation and professional users, and not for gamers, something that explains their ridiculously high prices. NVIDIA's Quadro P6000 costs $4800 while the Quadro P5000 is priced at $1900. The really interesting thing here is that the Quadro P6000 comes with the full GP102 core. This basically means that the card features 3840 CUDA cores, 240 TMUs and 96 ROPs (as opposed to Titan X Pascal's 3584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs and 96 ROPs).

Windows 10 could get a 'Game Mode' - tech
(hx) 09:07 AM CET - Dec,29 2016 - Post a comment / read (4)
It appears that Microsoft is working on a 'Game Mode' for Windows 10 that will improve performance while playing games. According to WindowsCentral, this mode is featured in the recently leaked build 14997, although it isn’t working yet, and will be available very soon to Insiders.
Microsoft is working on a brand new "Game Mode" feature for Windows 10 that will enhance the PC gaming experience by minimizing resources used by running apps to almost nothing and allocating freed up resources to the game, making it run faster, better and smoother overall.

This new feature was first spotted by WalkingCat in the recently leaked build 14997, and although it isn't working yet, we understand it's a feature that will be showing up for Insiders very soon, as it's something that's set to arrive with the Creators Update.

Our own sources have said this feature works similarly to how Xbox One handles running a game. Xbox OS, when a game is launched, will allocate resources to make sure the game is running the best it possibly can. Up until now, Windows hasn't had a built-in option for this that benefits games directly, but with the Creators Update that will be changing.

It's unclear if Game Mode will work with all Win32 games from the likes of Steam or Origin (we're assuming it will), or if it'll be limited to games from the Windows Store. Regardless, it's interesting to see Microsoft taking PC gaming seriously again, as for a while they kind of abandoned it in favor of Xbox. Now Microsoft's goal is the merge the two, as they both run on the same platform after all.

AMD Ryzen Benchmarks Leaked - tech
(hx) 05:56 AM CET - Dec,25 2016 - Post a comment
Benchmarks and a review of AMD's Ryzen 8 core CPU have leaked ahead of the official release date, thanks to the French magazine CPC (Canard PC). These benchmarks pit the Ryzen processor (which is an engineering sample) against several of Intel's own CPU's and also against the previous FX series.

Do note that these tests are from an Engineering sample that has lower clock speeds than AMD’s retail versions. The Engineering samplewas clocked at 3.15GHz, with a boost/turbo clock speed of 3.3GHz on all cores and a maximum turbo boost of 3.5GHz on a single CPU core. The retail version of AMD’s Ryzen will be clocked at 3.4Ghz so we expect an additional 8% performance boost (assuming that the boost/turbo clocks get a similar increase).

AMD has released brand new Crimson ReLive Edition 16.12.2 drivers for all you Radeon owners out there. According to AMD, these drivers offer support for Radeon ReLive, Radeon Chill, and Radeon WattMan. Here's a list of fixed issues:
  • AMD FreeSync technology may experience performance issues with Borderless Fullscreen application support when a secondary display is attached and has dynamic content running such as video playback in a web browser or if other applications or game launchers are running on the primary screen in the background. A workaround if this issue is experienced is to minimize all other running applications that are on the primary desktop display or on non-primary extended displays.

  • Radeon ReLive may fail to install during installation on some system configurations.

  • Battlefield1 may experience flashing or corruption when running in Multi GPU with Radeon RX 400 series.

  • Instant Replay fails to enable itself after it has been turned off due to content protection.

  • Radeon Settings may not load on system boot for some system configurations.

  • Fixed some errors in translations for Radeon Settings and Radeon ReLive.

  • Audio recorded by Radeon ReLive may sometimes exhibit slow motion when played back.

  • Radeon ReLive may experience recording issues or issues toggling the Overlay/Toolbar when Frame Rate Target Control is enabled. Users are suggested to disable Frame Rate Target Control when using Radeon ReLive.

  • Mouse cursor may stutter in recorded video when there is limited on screen activity outside of minor mouse movement.

  • In AMD Multi GPU configurations the secondary graphics product will exit the low power state when Radeon ReLive is enabled.

  • Radeon ReLive may sometimes not be able to take screenshots of secondary displays.

  • Chromium may fail to utilize hybrid decode for VP9 content.

  • DOTA2 may experience game corruption when performing a task switch while recording with Radeon ReLive in AMD Multi GPU configurations.

  • Radeon ReLive Overlay/Toolbar will not launch or Record when running League of Legends in Administrator Mode and Windowed Borderless Fullscreen.

  • Long ping times may be experienced with some WiFi adapters.

AMD Vega showcased running DOOM in 4K at 60fps - tech
(hx) 09:25 PM CET - Dec,13 2016 - Post a comment
Last Saturday, AMD held an event where several media folks attend a preview of the AMD Vega GPU. While the specifications of this GPU were not specified, but AMD demonstrated its new GPU running DOOM with Vulkan API on 4K resolution at 60 FPS with Ultra preset (no Nightmare). This unknown GPU was identified as "687F: C1" device, the same that appeared a few days ago with the AOTS benchmark throwing the same performance as the GeForce GTX 1080, knowing this time that the graphics card mounted 8GB HBM2 memory @ 500MHz giving a bandwidth of 512 GB / s. This AMD Vega graphics card will also be the forefront in terms of floating point performance: 25 TFLOPs (FP16) and 12.5 TFLOPs (FP32, single precision), compared to 11 TFLOPs (FP32) of the GTX TITAN X Pascal. Depending on the scene, the FPS generally ranged between 60 and 80, and rarely down to 50. It should be noted that Vega graphics card was not running DOOM with optimized drivers, so a little more debugging work with optimized drivers will lead to better performance.

The Snapdragon 835 is now Qualcomm's top-of-the-line chip. Qualcomm decided to rely on Samsung's 10nm FinFET process technology for the chip, which introduces a number of performance upgrades over Samsung's 14nm process. For example, it allows processors to be up to 30% smaller while also improving speeds by 27% or dropping power consumption by 40%. The reduced footprint and boosted speed/power efficiency gives hardware makers more flexibility to create long-lasting and powerful devices. The Snapdragon 835 is already in development and Qualcomm expects to see it in flagship designs during the first half of 2017. Quick Charge 4.0 was created with the Snapdragon 835 in mind. Critically, Quick Charge 4.0 officially supports the USB-C port that's becoming more widely available on today's high-end devices, as well as USB-PD (Power Delivery). Qualcomm said its goal in developing the technology was to deliver faster charges more efficiently. Quick Charge 4.0 was engineered to push five or more hours of use into a battery with only five minutes of charging. It relies on what Qualcomm calls Dual Charge, a parallel charging technique, to deliver 20% quicker charging with a 30% higher efficiency rating when compared to Quick Charge 3.0. Qualcomm expects Quick Charge 4.0 to reach devices alongside the Snapdragon 835 during the first half of 2017.

"If your iPhone 6 Plus is exhibiting the symptoms noted above, is in working order, and the screen is not cracked or broken, Apple will repair your device for a service price of $149." Owners of the iPhone 6 Plus who've already paid for a screen repair to resolve this issue will be refunded the difference between the price they paid for the original service and the new $149 repair amount. Apple's carrier partners are not participating in this program, so any and all repairs need to go through Apple directly.

Registered developers can download the refreshed operating system to their Nexus 6P or 5X smartphones, as well as the Nexus 9 and Pixel C tablets. System images for side loading are already available online, and the over-the-air downloads will appear within the next week. The most obvious new feature for end users is support for GIFs and animations within the keyboard. The Android keyboard can interact with third-party apps to create and apply stickers, videos, and other expressive content. Android 7.1 also adopts a 3D Touch-style interactive tool that will let people access up to five secondary actions or settings that can be reached directly from the launcher. Google calls this second preview "release ready" and says developers should rely on it to test their apps. Google expects to roll out Android 7.1.1 to the full lineup of supported devices, as well as Pixel and Pixel XL handsets, in December.
  • Ransomware Spreading via Images on Social Networks - An Israeli security firm called Checkpoint has dubbed a new outbreak of ransomware as 'ImageGate'. They’re now warning of dangerous malware which spreads through social media platforms as images that lock your computer when clicked. The software responsible is called 'Locky' and was discovered earlier this year. It encrypts the user’s files and then demands a ransom in order to unlock them again. The price being demanded for a key is 0.5 bitcoins, valued at roughly $365.
  • Nearly 3 Million Android Phones Vulnerable To OTA Update Hijacking - It's another day, and another backdoor Android exploit has been discovered. At the center of the discussion this time around is the Ragentek firmware used on a number of Android smartphones. Researchers from BitSight Technologies discovered two internet domains that were hardwired into the firmware. Until recently these domains were unregistered, so BitSight took it upon itself to register the domains to do a bit of testing. With BitSight now in possessions of the domains, it discovered that 2.8 million unique devices have sought to connect using the exploit. The firmware dangerously allows apps with escalated privileges to be installed, with BitSight writing, "The fact that the device reached out to defined head-ends immediately after initialization implies that the devices are affected by this issue out of the box, and were not subsequently compromised through other means, such as through a subsequent update." The man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) that is possible with this type of exploit is compounded by the fact that Ragentek does not encrypt communications sent to and from affected Android devices. Even more damning is the fact that code-signing is also not employed, which would allow a remote attacker to execute malicious code with root privileges using the over-the-air update mechanism. Of the nearly 3 million Android devices that are affected, 55 different models are caught up in the mix.
  • Google Play Services to Drop Support for Gingerbread - Google has said the next iteration of Google Play Services will sever backward compatibility with devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Today, Google Play Services — the core code behind app compatibility across Android platforms — is 10.0.0 and supports API level 9. The move to Google Play Services 10.2.0, expected in early 2017, will jump from API level 9 to API level 14. This means Play Services 10.2.0 will support Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich and up, leaving Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices behind. "The Gingerbread platform is almost six years old. Many Android developers have already discontinued support for Gingerbread in their apps," explained Google in a blog post. "This helps them build better apps that make use of the newer capabilities of the Android platform. For us, the situation is the same. By making this change, we will be able to provide a more robust collection of tools for Android developers with greater speed." At last check, only 1.3% of all devices accessing the Google Play Store were still running Gingerbread. The majority of devices are running Android 4.4 KitKat (25.2%), Android 5.x Lollipop (34.1%), or Android 6.x Marshmallow (24%). The change in API level support will not impact that many devices. Google says developers can either move forward and target API level 14 at a minimum, or offer multiple APKs via the Play Store to support both older and newer devices. This latter method will not include support for newer APIs, however, and may occasionally lead to broken or non-functioning apps. Google Play Services is updated automatically across Android devices once every couple of months
  • Instagram Intros Live Video and Disappearing Photos - Instagram has announced two new features for its mobile app that expand how people can share photos and videos. First, the social network is marking the debut of live video within Instagram Stories. Users can now broadcast live video to their followers through the Stories section of the app. Followers may opt to receive notifications when people share live video, and live video will be visibly earmarked as such. People will be able to leave comments throughout the video's duration, but live video is not stored or saved in users' feeds. Instagram says live video will be added to the Explore tab, too, allowing people to browse through live video that's being shared from around the world. In a move to combat Snapchat, Instagram is now allowing users to send disappearing photos and videos through its Direct Message function. Ephemeral media can be sent to individuals as well as groups, and creators will know when their photo/video has been seen and/or screen-captured. Once the content is viewed by the recipient, it disappears from the recipient's inbox and cannot be replayed. Instagram says disappearing photos and videos can only be sent to people who follow you. Disappearing content shared with groups will allow members to all see comments and responses. Instagram says the live video tool is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, while the disappearing photo/video feature is reaching all users today. Instagram is free to download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
  • YouTube Brings Blocking Tool to Kids App - Google has updated its YouTube Kids application and gave parents a little bit more control over the content that's available to their youngsters. The latest version of the app lets parents block videos or channels when they are signed into the app. Google says videos and channels that are blocked in YouTube Kids will remain blocked across all devices as long as the parent is signed into their account on each device. Parents can choose to unblock videos one at a time, or all at once. Video and channel blocking is available to YouTube Kids in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and a handful of South America, African, and Asian countries.

Nvidia GeForce 375.95 Hot Fix Driver - tech
(hx) 03:09 PM CET - Nov,18 2016 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has recently released a new driver for its graphics cards. However, this driver introduced an issue for owners of factory-overclocked Pascal cards. According to reports, this driver prevented these Pascal cards to push VRAM clocks above 810MHz. NVIDIA was quick to react and released today a hotfix driver that addresses this particular issue. In addition, Arkane Studios recommends this brand new driver for Dishonored 2, so there may be some additional optimizations for this particular title. I also suggest owners of other NVIDIA cards to skip the NVIDIA GeForce 375.86 WHQL driver and download this brand new hotfix driver.

These are the game-ready drivers for Battlefield 1, Civilization VI, Tom Clancy's The Division, and the Steep open beta. Be warned, some are reporting problems with this release, and this thread is where these are being discussed. Word is that some users are experiencing flickering in SLI configurations and that some users of 1080/1070/1060 cards are experiencing incorrect memory timings.
