NVIDIA GeForce 378.77 Hotfix driver is out - tech
(hx) 03:48 PM CET - Feb,26 2017 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released the new GeForce Hotfix driver 378.77, which brings much needed fixes for some of the issues that plagued the GeForce 378.66 WHQL drivers released last week. These include the following:

-    Fixed driver installation errors for laptops with GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 TI GPUs.
-    Fixed crash in Minecraft and some other Java-based titles
-    Resolved ''Debug Mode' as default option on Pascal based GPUs

Of course, this is not a new release. A hotfix driver only includes fixes to serious issues with a previous release that may be affecting a large number of users. Instead of making users wait for the next major WHQL driver release, NVIDIA releases hotfix drivers to get these fixes out more quickly.  If you haven’t noticed any of the above issues in your system, you aren’t required to download this hotfix driver. You should instead wait for the next GeForce WHQL driver to be released. Apart from the fixes, the GeForce 378.77 driver includes all the optimizations and improvements that the GeForce 378.666 WHQL drivers came with. You get optimizations for games such as Sniper Elite 4, For Honor, and Halo Wars 2.

Steam Audio Partial Occlusion Demo - tech
(hx) 12:30 PM CET - Feb,25 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
Valve owned Impulsonic has announced that it is ready to release Steam Audio for VR and all games. Steam Audio is the next generation of Phonon spatial audio tools. "Steam Audio delivers a full-featured audio solution that integrates environment and listener simulation. HRTF significantly improves immersion in VR; physics-based sound propagation completes aural immersion by consistently recreating how sound interacts with the virtual environment." What this means to VR gamers is that sound can mapped to the environment much more naturally. You can hear much more realistic sound turning a corner to come down a hallway; more natural sounds when an object bounces off another object, etc.

Use Your PC Without a Screen - tech
(hx) 07:37 PM CET - Feb,22 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
Samsung is ready to unveil it's Monitorless augmented reality solution at the 2017 Mobile World Congress event. Monitorless allows you to use your PC without a conventional screen by creating an AR effect with special glasses. The system requirements consists of a pair of Samsung Monitorless glasses, Samsung phone, and a PC. You can have apps from your phone or PC float before your eyes within your room. There is a VR and AR slider that seems to darken the view of the room to switch the glasses into VR mode and lighten the room in relation to the running app, to create an AR effect. Seems like this could be a nice diversion as we wait for more robust technology such as Microsoft's Hololens project to complete it's development cycle. Price and quality of the experience will determine the success of the product.

Corsair Bulldog V2.0 Build - tech
(hx) 12:08 AM CET - Feb,21 2017 - Post a comment
The Corsair Bulldog, version 2.0, is now shipping and upgrades the internal components to a Z270 motherboard and upgrade fans with improved noise profiles. Other than that, the Bulldog looks, style, form and function remain unchanged. The design is likely still dividing opinions; the short squat form factor with angular exterior will appeal to some, but the dimensions are perfectly suited to sitting in or around a TV and entertainment center. And because of the spacing and design of the interior, the mini ITX form factor can support any performance level of GPU and Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors. This gives users the flexibility to build for ultimate performance, making the dream of a 4K-ready gaming PC in the living room a possibility.

TechNews-How often do you replace your smartphone? - tech
(hx) 10:15 AM CET - Feb,19 2017 - Post a comment / read (7)
How often do you replace your smartphone? Are you the type that resides on the cutting edge of mobile technology or are you content to use a phone for at least a few years before upgrading? Perhaps you're accident-prone and find yourself buying a new smartphone more often than you'd like? FYI, I replace my smarphone maybe every 3, sometimes 4 years. It's not as though they're leaps and bounds ahead of the previous years predecessor so I see no point in replacing them very often. My first smartphones - HTC Touch HD and Samsung Galaxy Note 1 I replaced when they were too slow to use as internet and media device. Now I use my third one which is Samsung Note 3. I have this phone +3 years and I'm still happy with this phone especially after Samsung Note 7 fiasco. Whatever the case, feel free to share your preference in the comments section below!
  • Intel Core i3-7350K Review -The chip operates at a base clock rate of 4.2 GHz, similar to a Core i7-7700K. But it doesn't support Turbo Boost, though this isn't altogether disappointing given the unlocked multiplier. Intel shares 4MB of last-level cache across the die, yielding a ratio of 2MB per core, also like the higher-end models. And whereas the locked Core i3s are rated at 35W and 51W, the Core i3-7350K is the lone 60W SKU. Intel also re-introduced TSX-NI support, which can boost multi-threaded performance, to the i3 series.
  • GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Reportedly Launching in Late March - Nordic Hardware article includes a claim that the 1080 Ti is dropping by March 20. For those who are unaware, Nvidia is hosting their GeForce GTX Gaming Celebration at the end of February, and many are assuming they may divulge more information during this event.
  • For Honor: Graphics & CPU Performance (a total of 45 GPUs tested) - For those of you targeting 60fps at 1080p, the RX 470 or GTX 1060 3GB will be required. That said, aging weaponry such as the GTX 780 Ti and R9 290X provided strong performance here, pushing well over 60fps on average. In fact, using the extreme quality preset we find that For Honor is surprisingly GPU-friendly at 1080p. For a 50fps average, dated cards such as the Radeon HD 7950 Boost and GeForce GTX 680 hold up well. Moving to 1440p, you can forget about any sub-$150 offerings, in fact even the RX 470 struggles here using the extreme preset. The 3GB GTX 1060 takes a bit of a hit on the minimum frame rate and while not catastrophic it does fall clearly behind the 4GB RX 480.Mark Zuckerberg’s manifesto is a political trainwreck

  • Apple Backs Qi Wireless Charging Standard - Apple has joined the Wireless Power Consortium, according to IHS Technologies and the WPC's own web site. Apple is listed as a backing member of the organization, which is behind the Qi wireless charging standard. This is the first time Apple has appeared to support either of the two competing standards. Apple is not backing the AirFuel Alliance (formerly the Power Matters Alliance) wireless charging standard, at least not according to the Alliance's web site, where Apple is not listed as a member. Apple's membership in the WPC does not necessarily mean the company plans to bring wireless charging technology to its mobile devices; rather, it means Apple can contribute its own technology to the standard, as well as take advantage of the standard's existing feature set. Many of Apple's competitors already back at least one of the two major wireless charging standards. Samsung, for example, supports both Qi and AirFuel, which makes its devices compatible with most wireless chargers. Wireless charging is one of a handful of technologies that Apple's iPhone has yet to adopt.
  • Apple to begin manufacturing the iPhone SE in India this April - A report published by Reuters has revealed that the first iPhone to be manufactured in India will be the iPhone SE, one of its most affordable models. An earlier report from Indian publication The Economic Times had claimed that Apple is planning to assemble 300,000 to 400,000 units of the iPhone SE in India initially, but the Reuters report claims the actual number will be much lower. It is also not clear at this point if Apple will be assembling other iPhone models in the country, although a final decision will depend on the success of the initial iPhone SE production runs.
  • Google Home Gains Voice-Based Shopping to Compete with Amazon Echo - Google today added the ability to shop for certain goods to its voice-controlled Google Home speaker. Google says people can use Google Home to purchase everyday essentials from more than 50 national and local retailers. Some of the initial stores include Costco, Whole Foods Market, Walgreens, PetSmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Google Home owners need only say "Ok Google, how do I shop?" or "Ok Google, order paper towels" to get started. The Google Home app on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones allows Home owners to configure their default credit card, shipping address, and other settings before making their first purchase. Google says now through April 30, people who shop via Google Home won't be dinged with service or membership fees associated with its retail partners. Google expects to enable purchases from more apps and services over time.
  • Print security is often overlooked by IT - It's not that printers are bad, but a series of factors make them perfect targets for hackers.
  • New Xagent malware variant for macOS - Security researchers at antivirus software company Bitdefender have discovered a new variant of the Xagent malware that targets macOS and acts as a backdoor that can be customized depending on the objectives of an attack. Researchers traced similarities in the code that tied the malware variant to APT28, the hacking group accused of hacking into the U.S. Democratic National Committee last year. Bitdefender isn't entirely sure how the Mac version of Xagent is being distributed, but says it's likely planted on the system via a known macOS malware downloader called Komplex. Once installed, the backdoor checks for the presence of a debugger. If it detects one, it terminates itself to prevent execution. Otherwise, it waits for an Internet connection to communicate with the C&C servers. The Xagent payload includes modules capable of searching a target Mac's system configuration, offloading running processes and executing code. Capabilities include logging passwords, reading files, snapping pictures of screen displays, and stealing iOS backups stored on the compromised Mac.

  • Mark Zuckerberg's manifesto is a political trainwreck - Zuckerberg adds that he's thinking of creating "worldwide voting system" for Facebook users which could then be used as a template for how "collective decision-making may work in other aspects of the global community." That's a vague formulation. But coming on the heels of his comments about politicians with Facebook engagement, he sounds like he's floating the idea of turning Facebook into the infrastructure for managing elections.
  • Facebook videos will now auto-play with sound enabled by default - The auto-play functionality for videos on both mobile and desktops has been available for quite some time now. Previously, these videos auto-played with audio disabled, and you had to click on them to hear it. Users could also navigate to their settings to disable this feature. Now, Facebook has introduced a change which enables audio by default in auto-played videos. The company says that it experimented this change on some news feeds and received "positive feedback". That said, if your phone is on silent mode, the app will detect it as such and sounds will not be played for videos. However, if this is not the case, then the audio will play at the current media volume of the device. Thankfully, users also have the ability to toggle off this functionality altogether.
  • Facebook Video to Turn Up the Volume - Facebook is making several big changes to how it treats video on mobile devices. First, sound will fade in and fade out as users scroll past videos in their News Feed as long as the phone's volume is turned on. Videos will not automatically play sound when the phone's volume is set to off unless users tap on the video to hear it. People who never want to hear sound from News Feed videos can turn sound off entirely via the app's settings. Second, Facebook is taking advantage of mobile devices' form factor to make vertical videos look better. Moving forward, vertical videos will display a larger preview windows that fill more of the phone's screen. The larger format is available to all users on Android and iOS. Third, Facebook is making it easier to watch a video and scroll through the News Feed at the same time. People can minimize videos into a picture-in-picture format that will continue to play in one corner of the screen as they browse through their Feed. Facebook says Android device users will be able to keep picture-in-picture videos playing in the background even if they exit the Facebook app. Last, Facebook plans to bring its video to smart TVs and other big screens. The Facebook video app for TV will roll out soon to app stores for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Samsung Smart TV. Facebook says support for more platforms will follow. The TV app will let people watch videos from their News Feed, as well as those shared by friends, pages, or live broadcasts.
  • T-Mobile Adds HD Video and 10GB of Hotspot Data to One Plan - T-Mobile is prepared to improve its T-Mobile One unlimited service plan ($70) in the wake of Verizon's new unlimited plan ($80). Primarily, T-Mobile will give T-Mobile One subscribers access to high-definition video and 10 GB of LTE 4G mobile hotspot data. Previously, streamed video was limited to 480p definition and hotspot data was limited to 3G speeds. Verizon's new plan includes HD video and 10 GB of LTE hotspot data, but cost $10 more than T-Mobile's before taxes and fees. T-Mobile has matched the features of Verizon's plan without increasing its prices. Moreover, T-Mobile is offering these features to two lines for $100, and T-Mobile's plan includes taxes and fees. The news was shared by T-Mobile CEO John Legere via his Twitter account. Some details from still aren't clear; for example, whether "HD" means 720p or 1080p. The changes to T-Mobile's One unlimited plan, available to existing customers ad new customers alike, will go into effect Friday, Feb. 17.
  • Sprint Tweaks Unlimited Plan to Compete with T-Mobile, Verizon - Sprint has announced an updated version of its unlimited plan that improves video quality and includes up to 10 GB of mobile hotspot data. Sprint says the new plan allows customers to stream video at up to 1080p HD rather than 480p; stream music at 1.5 Mbps rather than 512 Kbps; and stream games at up to 8 Mbps rather than 2 Mbps. These represent significant improvements over Sprint's previous unlimited plan, but subscribers will still be subject to data deprioritization when the network is congested. The deal is only available to new customers and they must sign up for Unlimited Talk, Text and Data with Sprint AutoPay. The first line costs $50 for unlimited everything. The second line costs $40, and lines three and four are free, leaving the total monthly cost for up to four lines at $90 (plus taxes and fees). This rate, however, is only good through March 31, 2018. After that date, subscribers to this promotion will see the first line jump to $60 per month, the second line stays at $40, and lines three and four increase to $30 each. Moreover, after March 31, 2018, streamed video, music, and games will be capped at the lower bit rates. Accompanying the revised plan, Sprint is further tempting consumers with a free phone lease. Customers who switch to Sprint and port their number can lease the 32 GB iPhone 7 at no cost for 18 months with a qualifying trade-in. Eligible trade-in devices include the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, Samsung GS7, GS7 edge, GS6, GS6 edge, Note 5, LG V20, G5, and Moto Droid 2. T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have trotted out similar changes to their unlimited plans over the course of the last week.

(hx) 02:34 PM CET - Feb,18 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia released a Geforce Hotfix driver recently that addresses two issues in the GeForce Game Reader 378.66 WHQL drivers released on February 14, 2017. The GeForce Game Reader 378.66 WHQL drivers for Nvidia video cards was released on February 14th, 2017. It added optimizations for the games For Honor, Halo Wars 2, Sniper Elite 4, and Nvidia Ansel for Paragon, new features, and a number of fixes. Game Ready drivers are designed to improve the experience of players, usually through optimizations for the supported games. Among the new features are support for high-bit depth decoding (VP9/HEVC), H.264 ME-only mode enhancements, and several fixes for games (Battlefield, Heroes of the Storm), and general video card issues. GeForce version 378.66 WHQL - tech
(hx) 09:50 PM CET - Feb,14 2017 - Post a comment
Nvidia today released a new Game Ready driver package containing performance tweaks and optimizations for three games: Sniper Elite 4, For Honor, and Halo Wars 2. The new driver, version 378.66, is WHQL certified and not a beta release. It's a relatively minor update in that it doesn't introduce any SLI profiles that weren't already included in prior 378 drivers, though it did add 3D compatibility mode profiles for Sniper Elite 4 and For Honor, both listed as "excellent." As for bug fixes, there are nearly a dozen of them. They are as follows:
  • [Surround]: Surround cannot be enabled on the XGPU.
  • [G-Sync]: With G-Sync and V-Sync both enabled, there is a long delay when switching a game from full-screen mode to windowed mode.
  • [Second Life 64-bit]: World view is tinted blue after disabling Advanced Lighting Model.
  • [The Division]: Shadows flicker after enabling PCSS.
  • [Kepler GPUs][Battlefield 1]: There is flickering in the game when using TAA.
  • [SLI][Surround][GeForce GTX 1080]: The system crashes when launching games in SLI Surround using HDMI 2.0 connections.
  • [GeForce GTX 1080][Heroes of Storm]: The game crashes when launched.
  • [GeForce 860M][Notebook]: Direct X games crash.
  • [Minecraft]: Java SE Binary crashes pointing to nvinitx.dll.
  • [GeForce GTX 980 Ti]: The driver is unable to detect multiple TV models.
Windows 10 vs. Ubuntu Linux Gaming Performance - tech
(hx) 09:42 AM CET - Feb,14 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps overa t Phoronix have posted an article comparing gaming performance between Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux on Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1060 and 1080 GPU's. It seems like not so long ago we were hearing from Valve, that they anticipated their Source engine based games to, in many cases, perform better under Linux than they do in Windows. The results today, however, show that performance under Linux in modern titles has not lived up to this promise. Here's an excerpt:
Overall, these NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060/1080 Windows 10 vs. Ubuntu Linux gaming benchmarks ended up being quite interesting. In many of the higher-profile games ported to Linux by independent studios, the performance under Linux was only 60~70% of the Windows 10 performance. That's even for games that were released for Linux more than one year ago and has seen driver optimizations, post-release patches, etc. Most Linux gamers who dual-boot complain of newer Linux games performing slower than Windows and this is largely confirmed by our results.

But not all hope is lost. As shown with some tests like Total War: WARHAMMER and Metro Last Light Redux, there are also good ports that perform very close to the Windows numbers. Our tests like Unigine and OpenArena also show that Linux's OpenGL performance can meet/exceed the OpenGL performance offered on Windows.

The Talos Principle results were also interesting perspective and show hope for the future with the Vulkan performance coming out ahead of the OpenGL renderer. Additionally, the Vulkan Windows vs. Linux results were very close.

  • AMD Ryzen pricing leaks, to start at $317 - Ahead of the official launch early next month, US pricing for AMD Ryzen processors has been leaked early, courtesy of online retailer ShopBLT. All three SKUs will be 8-core processors with 16 threads. The flagship AMD Ryzen SKU will be the R7-1800X, with the manufacturing part number 'YD180XBCAEWOF'. The 8-core processor will be priced at $490.29, which is very promising as the chip is expected to be a beast of a performer. Unlike older flagship AMD processors, the R7-1800X will deliver high performance while being highly efficient at the same time. With a TDP of 'just' 95W, the processor is said to be capable of reaching 4.0 GHz out of the box. Its Intel rival, the Core i7 6900K, has a higher 140W TDP and is also a lot more expensive at over $1100. Positioned below the R7-1800X will be the R7-1700X. It too will be an 8-core chip with the same 95W TDP rating as the flagship R7-1800X. The retailer has listed the R7-1700X (YD170XBCAEWOF) at $381.72, which is fantastic value. The third SKU is the R7-1700 (YD1700BBAEBOX), which is an 8-core processor with a 65W TDP rating priced at $316.59.
  • AMD Zen Shrinks x86 Area and Power - Recently at the ISCC, International Solid-State Circuits Conference, it was revealed that the upcoming AMD Zen cores are more compact than Intel's current 14nm x86 core technology. Intel engineers and analysts agreed that the Zen core is clearly competitive, but there are other variables to account for. AMD's decision to use a metal-insulator-metal capacitor has led to a 15% reduction in switching capacitance. This gives Zen an edge with lower operating voltages, greater per-core voltage, and frequency control. Also of note is that there are two eight-core designs running at 3.4GHz with simultaneous multithreading enabled.
  • Intel to Invest $7Billion in Arizona Fab - Intel Corporation today announced plans to invest more than $7 billion to complete Fab 42, which is expected to be the most advanced semiconductor factory in the world. The high-volume factory is in Chandler, Ariz., and is targeted to use the 7 nanometer (nm) manufacturing process. It will produce microprocessors to power data centers and hundreds of millions of smart and connected devices worldwide. The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump and Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at the White House.
  • EVGA iCX Technology - Adding Thermal Sensors and Improved Cooling - EVGA found themselves highly motivated by last years thermal issues that they encountered on many GeForce GTX 1070 and 1080 models. The enthusiast community was alleging that many EVGA branded GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 cards were exploding due to improper VRM cooling. Catastrophic failures on luxury high-end graphics cards is something that is taken very seriously by everyone and it was determined by EVGA that VRM (Voltage Regulator Modules) temperatures exceeding 110C during stress loading.
  • 11-Drive DRAMless SSD Round Up -  For most of us enthusiasts, we shouldn't even consider DRAMless SSDs with planar NAND. It's true that the drives are faster than a hard disk drive, but when you lean on them with a slightly elevated workload, they can stall, stutter, and deliver a worse user experience than you would get with a spinning mechanical disk.
  • The Patriot Hellfire M.2 480GB Review: Phison NVMe Tested - This is not representative of most real-world workloads and is not reason to disqualify the 960 EVO. In our lightest test of real-world I/O, even the 250GB 960 EVO outperforms the 480GB Patriot Hellfire. For all but the most intense workloads, Samsung's SLC caching will provide better real-world performance than the MLC+Phison combination. And the Samsung drive will draw less power and run cooler while outperforming the Patriot Hellfire.
  • NSA Adds Windows 10 and Surface to List for Classified Use - The company has announced that Windows 10 has been added to the list of NSA's Commercial Solutions for Classified Programs (CSfC). Similarly, the Surface Pro 3, Pro 4, and Book are the only hardware devices running Windows 10 that meet the "high security requirements". Microsoft also says that it has added another layer of hardware security for Surface devices called Surface Enterprise Management Mode (SEMM). This enhanced layer of security allows IT managers in organizations to take ownership, lock down, and modify hardware configurations, networking capabilities and application access within the device firmware. SEMM can be deployed on Surface Pro 4, Book, and Studio. Additionally, the company is also extending device management in Windows 10 by bringing more security settings to MDM solutions with the upcoming Creators Update.
  • YouTube Live Streaming from Mobile Devices Coming Soon - YouTube has said users will soon be able to stream video live from their mobile phones. The video site already supports live streaming from PCs, and YouTube first promised to bring live streaming to phones last summer. The company has been testing live streaming with select content creators for months to tweak quality, controls, and social interactions when live. YouTube says the feature will first reach accounts that have 10,000 or more subscribers. The feature is simple to use, people need only begin capturing video directly through the YouTube app to go live. YouTube is also introducing Super Chat, a way for viewers and fans to make their comments stand out to content creators. Viewers will have to pay for this added visibility, allowing creators to earn some extra cash. Google says mobile live streaming will reach regular users over time.
  • Russian Police Arrest Lurk Malware Gang Suspects - Russian police just completed their second wave of arrests in a coordinated action to move on the Lurk malware gang, allegedly responsible for using a botnet to target corporate accounts at financial institutions and make off with 1.7 billion roubles (approximately $25 million). Reportedly of 50 previously arrested, 19 have already been jailed. Isn't it amazing how quickly the legal process can work without due process?
  • Google Drive Uses Hash Matching to Detect Pirated Content - Google seems to be okay with you stashing stolen content in your account, so long as you don't share it: "merely storing the file in a private Drive account doesn't raise any red flags." One of TorrentFreak's readers admitted that s/he was unable to share a link to a movie screener-hmm, sharing pirated content using a Google service...what could go wrong?
  • Google Launches Android Wear 2.0 - Google has officially made Android Wear 2.0 available to device makers and the public. The wearable platform has been in preview status since May 2016 and its release has been delayed for several months. Android Wear 2.0 includes a handful of key improvements over earlier versions of the operating system. First, Android Wear apps can now run directly on wearables without a nearby smartphone. Standalone apps will make Android-based wearables more useful on their own. This goes hand-in-hand with added support for LTE data connections built directly into the OS, allowing users to install watch apps directly to their wearable via WiFi or cellular connections. Android Wear 2.0 also adds the Google Play Store, where smartwatch owners will be able to browse for apps via keyword and voice search directly from their wrist. Other features include a circular user interface with swipe-to-dismiss behaviors, one-click Google sign-in, and improved complications. Watch faces, for example, will be able to show data from other apps, such as fitness info. The messaging app gains a significant update, too, thanks to better handwriting recognition, voice controls, and an on-device keyboard. Android Wear 2.0 also supports Apple's iOS so iPhone owners can use Android Wear watches. Last, Android Wear 2.0 brings the new Google Assistant to user's wrists, where people will be able to speak the "OK, Google" command to perform voice-based searches. Android Wear 2.0 will ship on the new LG Watch Sport and Watch Style, which were announced separately, beginning Feb. 10. Google says the platform will reach a number of existing supported devices in the weeks ahead. Some include the Asus ZenWatch 2 and 3; Casio Smart Outdoor and Pro Trek Smart; Fossil Q Found, Marshal, and Wander; Huawei Watch; LG G Watch R, Watch Urbane, Watch Urbane 2nd Ed; Moto 360 (2nd Gen and Sport); New Balance RunIQ; and the Tag Heuer Connected.
  • iPhone 8: Separate Wireless Charger, No Headphone Jack Adapter Included - In an unprecedented move, Apple has decided to give one of its upcoming iPhone models wireless charging capabilities - but be prepared to pay additional premiums, as the feature will only be available on the top model and require an additional accessory since the technology may not be built in. The company has also decided to stop including the Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter, since nobody uses wired headsets anymore…
  • Microsoft Outlook for iOS Adds Support for Third-Party Apps  - Microsoft has updated its Outlook email application for iOS devices and gave the app the ability to support add-ins. Microsoft says add-ins let Outlook users do more with their email thanks to powers enabled by third-party applications. For example, adds-ins will negate the need to leave Outlook to perform certain tasks, such as translate text, insert GIFs, or save items for safekeeping. Some of the launch partners include Evernote, Giphy, Nimble, Trello, and Smartsheet. Microsoft says add-ins are only available when reading emails for now, but it plans to add support for add-ins to the email composing/replying screens before too long. Moreover, add-ins are being made available to Office 365 subscribers first, with Outlook.com users to follow. Add-ins will be added to Outlook for Android at a later date. Microsoft Outlook for iOS is free to download from the iTunes App Store.
  • Apple Makes New iOS and WatchOS Betas Available to Devs - Apple has made available a handful of new beta builds of its core operating systems. The new releases include iOS 10.3 beta 2, watchOS 3.2 beta 2, tvOS 10.2 beta 2, and Xcode 8.3 beta 2. The most notable new feature of iOS 10.3 is a tool called Find My AirPods, which helps people locate lost earbuds via an audio alert. iOS 10.3 also makes the jump to the Apple File System, refreshes the Apple ID profile, tweaks animations, and provides more details concerning iCloud storage use. WatchOS 3.2 includes two core additions to the platform: theater mode and SiriKit. Theater mode lets Watch owners disable sound and raise-to-wake functions while retaining haptic vibrations for notifications. SiriKit, available to iOS since last year, lets developers add Siri to their own watchOS apps. These new betas are meant for developers. Apple normally makes public beta builds available a day or two after it releases the developer betas.
  • LG Watch Sport Targets Fitness Buffs, Supports Android Pay - LG has announced the LG Watch Sport, which is among the first wearables to ship with Google's Android Wear 2.0 platform on board. The Watch Sport is a circular, fitness-focused smartwatch that can track workouts and health data, such as distance covered and heart rate. The P-OLED screen measures 1.38 inches across and boasts 480 by 480 pixels. The Watch Sport is powered by a 1.1 GHz Snapdragon 2100 processor with 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of storage. It includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS radios, as well as LTE for cellular connections. The watch is able to connect to LTE for calls, messaging, and downloading or accessing apps. The Watch Sport can be used in coordination with a smartphone, sharing the same number so users can always be reached, or on its own even when the associated smartphone is not turned on. Notably, the watch includes NFC and support for Android Pay, so it can be used for mobile payments. It packs a 430mAh battery. The LG Watch Sport costs $380. The LG Watch Style will be available at Best Buy and the Google Store, as well as from AT&T and Verizon Wireless starting on Feb. 10. It will be sold in Canada, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, UAE, and the U.K. in the coming weeks.
  • MediaTek's Helio P25 Processor Takes Aim At Dual-Camera Phones  - MediaTek has announced the Helio P25, a mobile processor for smartphones that boosts imaging and video capabilities. The P25 relies on a 16nm FinFET process and includes eight ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz. MediaTek says the P25 is 25% more power efficient than the P20. The P25 is paired with an ARM Mali-T880 GPU clocked at 900 MHz, and boasts MediaTek's Imagiq 12-bit, dual image signal processor (ISP) technology. MediaTek claims the P25 and dual ISP can handle 24-megapixel single cameras or dual 13-megapixel cameras set in a color/mono configuration. This is typically put to use for capturing depth-of-field data to help generate bokeh and other effects. Moreover, the processor and ISP combo can allow smartphones to capture HDR video. Other features of the Helio P25 include support for 64QAM LTE-TDD for faster uploads and LPDDR4x RAM modules up to 6 GB for less-power-hungry multitasking. MediaTek expects the Helio P25 to ship in devices during the first quarter of the year.
  • Sony's Latest Camera Sensor Captures 1000fps Super Slow-Mo - Sony has announced a new camera sensor for smartphones that will make it possible top capture incredible slow-motion video. The dual-layer CMOS sensor includes 1 GB of DRAM, which Sony says allows the sensor to capture and read images much faster. Sony claims the sensor can read 19.3-megapixel images in 1/120 of a second, which is four times faster than most of today's sensors. This has two effects. First, the sensor can snag fast-moving subjects without introducing focal plane distortion, and second, the sensor can boost video capture speeds by a factor of eight. Many of today's smartphones capture slow-motion video at 120 frames per second. Sony's new sensor can capture distortion-free, full HD slow-motion at 1000 frames per second, which will greatly expand what filmmakers can do creatively. The sensor itself captures images up to 21.2 megapixels and 4K video. Sony didn't say when the sensor might be ready for production.
  • Samsung's Battery Blowup Makes Me More Likely to Buy the Next Note - Samsung now has a head start on safety standards that might have prevented this sort of battery blowup before it even started. With the pressure on to cram ever-larger batteries into ever-smaller compartments and no satisfactory standard for safety, you could even argue that battery explosions were inevitable. But Samsung got there first. Samsung will be the first to successfully pick up the pieces. I know Samsung has no choice but to do it right away. It could be a classic case of 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger': Even though the company may lose $5 billion cleaning up the Note 7 mess, profits are actually up.
  • 'Instant Tethering' Makes Your Pixel A Hands-Free Hotspot - Google has added a feature to its Pixel and Nexus handsets that it hopes will help ease the process of using phones as mobile hotspots. Instant Tethering, as the feature is called, works because both the phone and secondary device (like a tablet) rely on the same Google account and can talk to one another via Bluetooth. "When you unlock a tablet such as the Pixel C, it will notice if there is no internet connection available, and will ask your Pixel phone if it has internet and battery life," explained Pixel Project Manager Omri Amarilio in a blog post. "If it does, we will give you an option to enable a secure hotspot and pair automagically, without even taking your phone out of your pocket." Once you stop using the tablet and lock the screen, Instant Tethering is smart enough to realize the hotspot is no longer needed and will turn it off on the phone in order to save battery life. Instant Tethering is limited to Google devices and works with the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P smartphones and the Nexus 9 and Pixel C tablets.

  • Action...Avengers: Infinity War - Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as started in May of 2008 with the release of Iron Man 1, and it really is an unprecedented culmination of a series of films interlinked together, which at the time had never been done before. And for us the important thing is making it all come together. We know they're gonna face Thanos; we've been setting that up since Avengers 1. How do you do that in a way that is unexpected, that pits the Avengers against somebody who is more powerful than anyone they've faced, and yet make them completely unprepared to face them? Well, tear them apart, which is why we did Civil War before Infinity War… Thanos shows us why he's the biggest, the best, the baddest villain that we've ever had, and the most frightening villain that the Avengers have ever faced.

Upcoming AMD Ryzen chips scaring Intel? - tech
(hx) 10:53 PM CET - Feb,08 2017 - Post a comment / read (5)
According to Forbes' Anthony Leather, Intel is prepping not only price cuts but a hyperthreaded i5 as a response to the soon to be released AMD Ryzen chip family. Could Intel's dominance in the desktop gaming scene soon be over?
The rumor mill continues to turn regarding AMD's Ryzen CPUs, which are due for release next month. This time, though, it's Intel that's the subject of some interesting news as it seems to be getting a little scared of what AMD has up its sleeve.

The French website, www.cpchardware.com has made claims that its sources are pointing to three very interesting moves from Intel, to combat the threat AMD's Ryzen poses in potentially undercutting its enthusiast CPUs.

The first and most interesting is a Core i5-7640K, which will not only offer a 200MHz boost in frequency compared to the current Core i5-7600K, but amazingly, the website also claims it will feature hyper-threading. This is Intel's trickery that allows one core to provide two threads to mimic the work of two cores. You don't see the same performance increase as you do from a true second physical core, but there's a definite speed boost in multi-threaded applications.

Traditionally, Intel has only offered hyper-threading on its Core i7 K-series when it comes to unlocked quad-core desktop CPUs, so the move is unprecedented in bringing extra performance to its Core i5-series. It's clearly worried about AMD's offerings in the Core i5-7600K's price range of around $240, with the AMD SR5 CPUs looking likely to offer a minimum of 4 cores and 8 threads - the same as the would-be Core i5-7640K, with some even offering 6 cores and 12 threads according to this leak, and its cheaper SR3 range offering the same 4-core/8-thread configuration as the current Core i5-7600K.

The second rumor includes a second unlocked Core i7 CPU to sit alongside the current Core i7-7700K - a so-called Core i7-7740K, which will offer a speed increase over the original CPU. However, this will till fall short of offering the kind of allure of AMD's 6-core/12-thread SR5 CPUs, especially if the latter cost the same or a little more; don't forget that AMD's Ryzen CPUs all offer unlocked multipliers so are overclockable.

Finally, the website also briefly covers price drops for Intel's CPUs. This is the most logical result of a successful launch from AMD that brings some competition to the enthusiast CPUmarket. Intel has practically been allowed to charge what it likes for its CPUs as there hasn't been much of a challenge from AMD, especially at the high-end. The likelihood is that CPUs such as the Core i5-7600K, which costs $240, could well see double-digit percentage price cuts, with this particular model dropping to below $200.

HoloLens Could Augment Existing PC Games - tech
(hx) 03:30 PM CET - Feb,06 2017 - Post a comment
Twitter user @Tanfuku showed a concept for how HoloLens could expand the capabilities of existing games by displaying UI elements outside of the game world. It's something we've theorized as a possibility in the past, but this video gives us a better idea of how it could look in practice. Tanfuku's video shows how HoloLens could be used by the popular MMO Final Fantasy XIV to display stats, maps, inventory menus, and other panels that are entirely necessarily for gameplay, but heavily clutter up the interface. Systems like the Nintendo 3DS and Wii-U also make use of extra displays to show menus, maps, and other UI elements to prevent them from interfering with the main game itself.

TechNews - Frameless Monitor with Swarovski - tech
(hx) 10:42 PM CET - Feb,02 2017 - Post a comment / read (16)
My dear readers, I'm having heart surgery tomorrow. So I won't be able to update Gameguru until Monday/Tuesday (6th/7th Feb) next week. So please be patient with me :-)
  • NVIDIA Game Bundle Activation Clarification - First and foremost is that you will have to have GeForce Experience running on the PC you are wanting to activate the game on. Of course for GeForce Experience to work, it will require you have an NVIDIA GPU installed. If your free game came with a GTX 1070, it will require that a GTX 1070 (or better) be installed during activation.  Game coupon codes that are bundled with a qualifying GPU or PC purchase are intended for use by the purchaser. Repurposing the code is a violation of the bundle’s terms and conditions. As part of the coupon redemption process, NVIDIA uses GeForce Experience to perform a hardware verification step to ensure the coupon code is redeemed on the system with the qualifying GPU.  Terms and conditions state that a valid bundle redemption must be tied to a qualifying GPU purchase. If the game is separated from the GPU purchase, this becomes a violation of the terms and conditions and NVIDIA wouldn't be able to offer the game.
  • AOC Announces Frameless Monitor with Swarovski Crystals - The more expensive of the two monitors comes with a rose gold base as well as a rear embedded with Swarovski crystals. When it comes to stylish computer hardware in general and displays in particular, it is not always easy to get something that is both aesthetically attractive and technologically advanced. High-quality backlighting requires space, and full-size connectors make devices thicker too, so sleek designs usually have certain compromises. AOC attempted to combine style and technology in its Q2781-series monitors, if having crystals on your monitor is your thing. The displays are based on AH-IPS panels featuring a 2560×1440 resolution suitable up to 350 nits brightness, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles, a 5 ms response time and a 60 Hz refresh rate. The manufacturer claims that the Q2718PQ and the Q2718PS displays can reproduce 16.77 million colors, and also claims "full sRGB" (but we would cautiously call it 99%).
  • LG 34UC79G 34-inch Ultra-Wide FreeSync Monitor Review - The great thing about this new LG is that no corners have been cut. We don't consider its 2560x1080 resolution to be a negative. While we wouldn’t complain if the same performance were available at 3440x1440, the fact is you'd be hard pressed to replicate the gaming experience we had on a screen with that higher pixel count. To us, gaming performance has to start with proper motion processing. While some may cry for greater resolution, we think the 34UC79G goes far beyond ''just fine'' the way it is. A lower pixel count means higher framerates which translates to smoother motion and better gaming. Coupled with the best contrast we’ve yet seen from an IPS panel and you’ve got a near-perfect gaming monitor. The 21:9 aspect ratio and gentle curve just seals the deal in our book. If you’ve been waiting for a price drop in this category, it's here. First the AOC C3583FQ and now the 34UC79G; more choices and better monitors, sounds like a win/win.
  • Intel Shipping Optane Memory Modules to Partners for Testing - Intel Optane and 3D NAND SSDs, coupled with Intel DIMMs based on 3D XPointTM technology will enable outstanding, cost-effective data center performance, completely transforming today's storage media pyramid. The hot and warm tiers will be greatly expanded, unleashing new levels of performance and responsiveness for apps and services.
  • Microsoft Tells Computer Makers How to Make PCs Cool Again - Microsoft officials told these vendors that while there are more than 400 million Windows 10 devices in the market (as of September 2016), its goal remains to have "one billion people loving Windows 10 every single day." Microsoft acknowledged last year it's behind its own self-imposed goal of reaching 1 billion by mid-2018, but it's not clear by how much. The way Microsoft believes it can get to this goal is to encourage partners to make a "few big bets" together with the Redmond company. These bets are familiar ones: The Universal Windows Platform, which enables developers to write apps, drivers, and services that can scale across Microsoft's complete Windows portfolio (PC, tablet, phones, Xbox, embedded devices); a constantly updated version of Windows; and "incredible modern devices" that will replace the more than 600 million Windows devices currently in market that are more than four years old.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 To Have "Infinity" Display - The two smartphones are codenamed Dream and Dream 2, representing the smaller and larger Galaxy S8 respectively, according to two sources. Both versions will have screens that curve down at the left and right sides of the device similar to the Galaxy S7 Edge, two sources have said. The so-called "infinity display" will cover the majority of the front of the device, with very little body on the top and bottom of the screen not dedicated to the display. Two sources said there wasn't even room to put a logo or brand name on the front of the device. Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device, multiple sources said. The Galaxy S8 will have a traditional 3.5mm headphone socket, according to several sources.
  • Apple Releases iOS 10.2.1 to Fix Bugs - Apple has made available the public build of iOS 10.2.1 to the iPhone and iPad. According to Apple, iOS 10.2.1 fixes bugs and improves the security of its smartphones and tablets. Apple recommends all users install the update. Apple also released watchOS 3.1.3, tvOS 10.1.1, and macOS Sierra 10.12.3. These releases all resolve small problems and improve performance
  • iOS 10.3 Beta 1 Adds 'Find My AirPods' Tool - Apple has released a slew of new beta builds for its various operating systems. iOS 10.3 beta 1 for the iPhone and iPad adds one significant new feature called Find My AirPods. With it, people can locate their AirPod headphones by forcing the ear buds to emit a loud, high-pitched sound. Apple didn't call out any other new features within iOS 10.3 other than a few minor tools for developers. Apple also released first beta builds of macOS Sierra 10.12.4, tvOS 10.2, and Xcode 8.3. These builds are for developers and not public testers. Apple typically makes public betas available a day or two after releasing the developer builds.
  • iCloud Drops iPhone Activation Lock Search Tool - Apple has removed a tool within iCloud that allowed people to easily check the Activation Lock status of iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Activation Lock was introduced as a part of iOS 7's Find My iPhone feature in 2014. Any iPhone owner who activates Find My iPhone automatically locks the device to their Apple ID. The idea behind Activation Lock is to make it so stolen iPhones can't be activated on new accounts without first disassociating them from the original owner's account. iPhones with Activation Lock still in place are unusable with new Apple IDs, and thus not worth stealing in the first place. Until recently, iCloud provided an easy tool that allowed potential iPhone purchasers to check the Activation Lock status of a device by entering the IMEI or serial number. The tool is no longer available within iCloud, and the former web site returns a 404 error. Moreover, Apple has removed the language associated with the Activation Lock search tool from its support documents. Instead, Apple suggests potential buyers and sellers work together to ensure iPhones, iPads, and iPods are properly unlocked and erased before any sale or transfer takes place. This approach may work between legitimate transactions, but doesn't help people who've purchased stolen devices.
  • Google Open Sources Chrome for iOS - Google has said it has made an open source version of its Chrome browser for iOS available to developers. Google says today's news is the result of year's worth of work. "Due to constraints of the iOS platform, all browsers must be built on top of the WebKit rendering engine," explained Google in a blog post. "For Chromium, this means supporting both WebKit as well as Blink, Chrome's rendering engine for other platforms. That created some extra complexities which we wanted to avoid placing in the Chromium code base." Google has pulled apart the code for iOS and carefully refactored it into the open-source repository. Google says developers can take the core code and use it to compile the iOS version of Chromium just as they already do for Android and other platforms. Google hopes developers will use the open source version of Chrome to improve web-based features for Apple's iPhone and iPad.
  • Gigabit LTE - The Path to 5G - The newly introduced Gigabit LTE standard implemented by Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Telstra, as well as the Gigabit LTE device embodied in Netgear's Nighthawk M1 Mobile Router, offer a glimpse into the performance we can expect from future cellular networks. All four companies are dedicated to this standard and expect wide-spread adoption of Gigabit LTE by the end of 2017 and into 2018. As the infrastructure grows, Qualcomm has an impressive opportunity with 4GX-capable devices based on its Snapdragon 835 SoC chipset as well as its Snapdragon X16 Gigabit LTE modem chipset.
  • Razer Buys Nextbit - Razer, the gaming hardware company, has announced it has purchased Nexbit, the cloud-focused smartphone company. Nextbit's primary product is the Robin smartphone, which relies on a constantly-syncing cloud connection to manage device storage. The phone was launched through a Kickstarter campaign in 2015 and reached end users in early 2016. Nextbit has updated the core platform consistently over the last 12 months, but has not introduced new hardware. "Nextbit will operate as an independent division inside Razer, focused on unique mobile design and experiences," said the company in a statement. "To put it simply, we'll be doing exactly what we've been doing all along, only bigger and better." Nextbit says it has ceased selling Robin smartphones and accessories, but the company remains committed to its existing customer base. Warranties will be honored for the next 6 months, and Nextbit promises to push out security releases through February 2018. "Joining up with Razer will allow us to reach much further," said Nextbit cofounder Tom Moss. Moss will continue to serve as Nextbit CEO and report to Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
  • T-Mobile Promo to Refund Smartphone Sales Tax - T-Mobile has announced it will refund the sales tax of smartphone purchases. The limited promotion is available for new devices purchased on a T-Mobile equipment installment plan and associated with either a T-Mobile One or Simple Choice Unlimited 4G LTE service plan. After the sale, customers can fill out a form online and receive a MasterCard gift card for 11.2% of the purchase price of the device, which exceeds the cost of sales tax in most cases. T-Mobile says the sales tax refund promotion can be applied to every phone it sells, and can be used with up to 12 lines. T-Mobile didn't say how long this promo will be available. Earlier this year, T-Mobile rolled the cost of monthly service taxes and fees into its plan pricing in order to simplify billing
  • Oculus Sensors are Technically Hackable Webcams - Is Facebook using your Oculus Rift to spy on you? That's the question UploadVR is asking after a University of California, Davis researcher has come forward demonstrating how easy it is to pull image data off of an Oculus. Oculus is adamant that this is not the case, and image data is only used for motion tracking and then quickly disgarded, but who knows? And, in a world where even Mark Zuckerberg puts tape on his webcam (take a closer look at his notebook), maybe Oculus or Facebook are not who we should be worrying about?
  • T-Mobile to Give AT&T Switchers Free Year of Hulu - T-Mobile today further sweetened the pie for former AT&T customers by offering a free year of Hulu. The offer is a consolation prize of sorts. In December, AT&T kicked off a promotion wherein it gave AT&T customers a free year of DirecTV Now when they switched to T-Mobile. DirecTV Now has experienced a bumpy launch, collecting numerous complaints from customers who say the service doesn't work as advertised. T-Mobile said it wants to protect customers who took advantage of the initial offer. "To make things right for those new T-Mobile customers, the Un-carrier is giving everyone who participated in this deal a free year of Hulu — an awesome streaming service that actually works — on top of their free year of DirecTV Now," said the company in a statement. T-Mobile says all former AT&T customers who signed up for a free year of DirecTV will be eligible for the free year of Hulu Limited Commercials service. The switchers will be notified with a promo code in the weeks ahead.
  • Verizon Rolls Out 1 GB Plan for Non-Phones - Verizon Wireless today made available a new service plan for connected devices other than smartphones. The plan costs $15 per month ($10 with auto-pay) and provides 1 GB of LTE date in addition to unlimited talk and text for select devices. Verizon envisions the plan will be ideal for hardware such as tablets, smartwatches, mobile hotspots, connected security cameras, and gear such as the kid-focused GizmoGadget. The service plan can stand on its own and doesn't need to be associated with another line. There is no line-based access charge, but taxes and fees are not included.
  • Verizon Claims You Don't Need An Unlimited Data Plan - If you think you know your own data habits better than anyone, think again. Verizon has gone on record with its new ad, which insists that nobody needs unlimited data. The revered cellular provider thinks it is being generous by recommending its 5GB plan, which offers "tons of data" and costs a modest $55. Funny enough, T-Mobile's CEO took to Twitter and suggested that Verizon was going through some kind of mid-life crisis, tweeting that their Miata needed an oil change. (I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about that, since an MX-5 RF is on my radar.)
  • AT&T Simplifies International Roaming with $10 Day Pass - AT&T today made it less expensive and less confusing to use your AT&T phone overseas. The company introduced the AT&T International Day Pass, which provides travelers with unlimited talk and text in over 100 countries. Moreover, the International Day Pass doesn't charge extra for data; travelers will have access to their domestic data plan when overseas. AT&T will no longer charge by the minute, message, or megabyte. The International Day Pass costs $10 and unlocks access to roaming for a 24-hour period. AT&T says most popular destinations across Europe, Asia, and Central/South America are included. Under AT&T's old Passport-branded plans, travelers were required to buy access in large chunks that still required per-minute voice fees and placed limits on data. AT&T's new International Day Pass, which now closely mirrors Verizon's roaming plan, will be available starting Friday, Jan. 26.
  • Google Voice Gains New Lease On Life with Massive Overhaul - Google today introduced a wholly new version of Google Voice for Android, iOS, and the web. The calling, voicemail, and messaging platform has been overhauled from the ground up with a new design, new features, and a fresh commitment from Google to keep the service updated. Google Voice now includes separate tabs to help people manage text messages, calls, and voicemails. Conversations with individual contacts are threaded to improve ease-of-use. Google Voice adds support for group messaging and photo MMS, features long absent from the previous version of Google Voice. These go a long way toward allowing the service to act as a primary messaging application. Google says it is working with mobile network operators to add support for RCS to the service down the road. People who prefer to use Google Hangouts for their messaging services will need to choose either Hangouts or Voice, as only one can be used at a time; moreover, Voice will not migrate conversation threads from Hangouts into Voice. Existing features, such as voicemail transcription, remain intact, and Voice gains new spam filtering tools to keep pesky messages out of your inbox. Google says it is rolling out the new Google Voice in stages. Android devices will receive it first, with iOS to follow. Google expects all users to have access to the new Google Voice within a few weeks.
  • Brain-computer interface used in study - Scientists have conducted a trial where they were able to communicate with patients that suffered from advanced forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a condition where people lose the ability to control their muscles. The trial employed a brain-computer interface that allowed the patients to reply to questions with a simple 'yes' or 'no' response.  The condition still allows patients to think but prevents them from talking or moving, and depending on the severity of the condition, eye movement may also be restricted. The people involved in this study were the worst-affected and could not move their eyes.
  • Supercomputer Outwits Humans In Poker Rematch - An artificial intelligence called Libratus has beaten four of the world's best poker players in a gruelling 20-day tournament that culminated late on Monday. The Brains vs Artificial Intelligence competition saw four human players – Dong Kim, Jason Les, Jimmy Chou and Daniel McAulay – spend 11 hours each day stationed at computer screens in the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh battling a piece of software at no-limit Texas Hold'em, a two-player unlimited form of poker. Libratus outmanoeuvred them all, winning more than $1.7m in chips. (Thankfully for the poker pros, they weren't playing with real money) It's a crushing defeat for humanity, but a major milestone for artificial intelligence.

  • Primitive Technology: Bed Shed - This structure is quick and easy to build. The bed is 1 m above the ground and provides plenty of area beneath to store fire wood and tools out of the rain as well as a place to sit and make things. The bed is comfortable and keeps the occupant off the ground away from ground dwelling creatures at night. The smoke coming up from the fire keeps mosquitoes away while providing heat and light reflected back from the roof. In fine weather the fire can be placed in front of the shed in the open while during rain the fire can be kept under the shelter to keep it dry. If room is needed to stand up the bed can be folded up against the roof and tied to it using cordage. This shed is literally one half of the standard rectilinear hut I usually build (2m x2m floor plan, 2m tall ridge line and 1 m high side walls e.g. from wattle and daub hut and tiled hut videos) and was built to be upgradeable. Later, the other side of the roof could be added on and then walls of some kind built around the frame to form a full hut.

The graphics are not bad TBH, the results however are all over the place and that makes this article an indicative one. You will run at 100 FPS at one point and then at 50 FPS the next, this is the complexity of the game and environment. Perhaps a few driver updates will bring the weird differential results a bit closer to each other, then again if most graphics card offer 50+ FPS at 2560x1440, we do not see a real issue either. With full quality settings a 4 GB or higher VRAM card does feel better and smoother to play.

  • The Sony PlayStation VR Review - The cost of a PlayStation 4 and PSVR bundle will set you back more money than an Oculus Rift. And if you opt for the PS4 Pro, the package costs as much as an HTC Vive. But both PC-centric platforms still need a relatively high-end computer to drive them. Gamers who already own a PS4 console have the most affordable path to premium VR available to them. We should all be so lucky. Even if you don’t have a PS4, Sony’s is still the most affordable high-end VR platform you can buy. Yes, the Vive and Rift are a notch above. But PSVR's value is undeniable. Conversely, most PC enthusiasts have a hard time justifying VR unless they already own fast-enough gaming rigs.

It further mentioned that Lite-On will provide “GPP bridge rectifiers for the support of fast wireless charging.” However, it did not mention as to whether Apple is going to go with PMA or Qi charging. It might even come up with something entirely new. It’s rumpled that Apple will have 3 iPhone 8s coming out and all will support the technology.

Despite packing top-end specifications it is priced to undercut most of its competition.
  • Samsung reportedly finds batteries were to blame for Note7 fires - According to their knowledge, Samsung will surprise no one on Monday, when it will announce that the batteries in its Note7 smartphones were to blame for the issues encountered. According to the company's investigation, which hired three outside companies to look at different productions aspects, irregularly-sized batteries that did not fit well into the phone were the cause of the fires and explosions. This echoes earlier rumors from engineers outside the company. The batteries inside of the Note7 devices were manufactured by Samsung SDI or the China-based ATL company. Originally, Samsung thought its own batteries were the only ones with a flaw, so it recalled all those devices, while it ramped up production of ATL batteries. Unfortunately, this ramp up in production seems to have caused additional issues that resulted in ATL batteries also catching fire and posing a risk. It's unclear for now as to what exactly these secondary issues were.
  • Researchers Devise Fire-Resistant Battery - Adding a flame-retardant to select elements of lithium ion batteries many prevent fires, according to researchers at Stanford University. The researchers figured out how to create a nonwoven electrospun separator out of triphenyl phosphate and coated it with a heat-activated polymer. The separator sits between the anode and cathode within batteries. The thermal-triggered coating would melt in the event a battery overheats, thus releasing the triphenyl phosphate flame retardant into the battery. The researchers claim this more or less suppresses combustion almost immediately. The researchers' method doesn't impact the battery under normal temperatures and can be fine-tuned to handle thermals generated under normal use. Such technology may have prevented the fire-catching Galaxy Note7 problem Samsung dealt with last year. The researchers note further safety testing is needed before the technology can be used in consumer devices.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7, Myriad Others On Deck for Android 7 - Samsung has detailed which handsets will receive the Android 7 Nougat operating system update. Some of the core changes to the platform include a refreshed Quick Settings panel, OS-level support for split screen multitasking, four new performance modes, and Samsung Pass, which allows people to secure various aspects of their Samsung account with a fingerprint. The company this week began distributing the new operating system to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. It also plans to update the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus, Note 5, Tab A with S Pen, Tab S2 (LTE), Galaxy A3, and Galaxy A8 to Android 7. As for timing, Samsung said this collection of devices should see Nougat at some point during the first half of the year.

Similarly, it will can Drive version 4.16 and Docs, Sheets, and Slides versions 1.2016.12204 for iOS devices. Google says people still using these legacy versions of its core productivity apps will be prompted to update them beginning March 1 and all functionality will cease a month later. Google said the change won't impact the web/desktop variants of these apps. The search giant encourages users to update to the latest versions of these apps as soon as possible.

The increase is effective today, according to AT&T. The increase was first reported by Droid-Life. AT&T's move follows closely a similar increase made by Verizon, which bumped activation fees from $20 to $30. Activation fees are largely seen as a way for carriers to pad profits.

AT&T said it helped move people with 2G equipment over to 3G/4G devices with discounts and, in some cases, free phones. "By shutting down our 2G network, this frees up more spectrum for future network technologies, including 5G," said AT&T Chief Strategy Officer John Donovan. "In the next few months, we plan to repurpose that spectrum for LTE." AT&T says the 2G shutdown will also help pave the way for the evolution of 5G.

  • NVIDIA could announce the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti at PAX East 2017 - According to a report, NVIDIA is likely to announce the rumored GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card at PAX East 2017. The info was apparently shared with The Tech Buyer's Guru by a MSI rep at CES 2017, but we will still suggest you take this story with a pinch of salt. The rep added that the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will be offered by board partners (including MSI) at launch. In case you aren't aware, PAX East 2017 kicks off on March 10th in Boston. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was expected to be unveiled at CES this year, but that didn't happen sadly. The card will be based on the same Pascal GP102 silicon as the GeForce GTX Titan X Pascal, with 10GB of VRAM. It should offer an impressive performance jump over the GeForce GTX 1080, although with a higher TDP of around 250W.

This change is due to be pushed out to the general public in the Windows 10 Creators Update slated for the spring. For Windows 10 Home and Pro editions, gone is the "enhanced" setting level, leaving users to select from the "basic" or "full" telemetry plans. Microsoft says it will reduce the amount of data it collects under the "basic" plan, allowing peeps with Home and Pro editions to somewhat limit the transfer of information back to Redmond.
  • NSA will share vast amounts of private data gathered without warrant - With only days until Donald Trump takes office, the Obama administration on Thursday announced new rules that will let the NSA share vast amounts of private data gathered without warrant, court orders or congressional authorization with 16 other agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security. The new rules allow employees doing intelligence work for those agencies to sift through raw data collected under a broad, Reagan-era executive order that gives the NSA virtually unlimited authority to intercept communications abroad. Previously, NSA analysts would filter out information they deemed irrelevant and mask the names of innocent Americans before passing it along.
  • A backdoor in WhatsApp could allow governments to read messages - An alleged backdoor in WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption protocol is said to have the power to allow Facebook or government agencies to listen in on unsuspecting users. WhatsApp has claimed that no one, not even Facebook staff, can access the messages of WhatsApp's more than one billion users. The alleged backdoor was discovered by University of California, Berkeley security researcher Tobias Boelter. He described it in detail to The Guardian, explaining it allows WhatsApp to intercept messages by forcing a new security key to be generated. For messages that have not been marked as delivered, WhatsApp can have messages be re-encrypted and re-sent using a new key that they know and provide. If the recipient is offline, they are not made aware of this change in encryption and the sender is only notified if they opt-in to encryption warnings.
  • Samsung Likely To Unveil Foldable Phones In Q3 - Samsung Electronics is highly likely to unveil foldable smartphones in the third quarter of this year, according to sources familiar with the matter. "Samsung is expected to roll out more than 100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter," a source told The Korea Herald. The smartphone, whose panels face outward upon folding, may be used as a 7-inch tablet when unfolded, he said. Samsung, had initially completed the development of fold-in phones that tuck the screen inside when folded. It began the development of fold-out technologies around August, deeming that users may find it inconvenient to unfold the phones every time they want to use them. "Since the company already secured fold-in phone technology, it was not a big challenge to shift into the fold-out phones," he said.
  • HTC U Ultra Is New, Glass-Backed Flagship Phone - HTC has announced its new flagship phone, the HTC U Ultra, along with a smaller version, the U Play. Both phones have a new design with colorful glass on the front and back, and a metal frame. The rear glass is fully curved at all four edges, a first. HTC developed a unique process called optical spectrum hybrid deposition" to give the glass multi-layered color. Available colors are: blue, white, black, and pink. The U Ultra has a 2-inch secondary touch-screen above the main display, much like the LG V20. New "HTC Sense Companion" software uses an AI to learn about you and offer intelligent suggestions. It can learn which are your most important contacts and apps, and only surface those notifications on the second screen. It can also advise you when to charge the phone if your schedule indicates you may run out of power before bedtime. (The battery rates 3,000 mAh.) The HTC Sense Companion will be on both U-series phones, as well as other new HTC phones this year. The U Ultra's Super LCD 5 main display measures 5.7 inches and has Quad-HD resolution. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and 4 GB of RAM. HTC gave the U Ultra four microphones that are always listening, and it can record "3D audio". The main camera is a 12-mgeapixel UltraPixel sensor, similar to the HTC 10 but with improved PDAF (focusing). A 16-megapuxel camera graces the front. Other features include 64 GB of internal storage, memory card slot, Android 7.0, Hi-Res audio, Cat. 11 LTE, fingerprint sensor in the home button, NFC, and Quick Charge 3.0. It has a USB-C port with USB 3.1, but no 3.5mm audio jack. The U Ultra is now available for pre-order from htc.com for $750, in an unlocked version that will work with the LTE networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. It will ship in early March. The U Play has the same design but smaller, with a 5.2-inch display, no second display, and a more modest main camera and processor. Other features are similar. HTC has not announced plans for a US-compatible version of the U Play
  • App Store Antitrust Case Against Apple Allowed to Proceed - An on-going lawsuit accusing Apple of holding a monopoly on the market for iPhone apps has been given new life today thanks to an appeals court ruling. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Apple's sole distribution method of mobile apps for the iPhone may be anticompetitive. The original lawsuit was filed in 2012. It charged that Apple's policy of allowing only apps distributed via the app store onto iPhones violates federal law. Apple's legal argument centered on the idea that the App Store serves only as a platform for end users to buy apps from developers, the iPhone maker sees the App Store as shelf space that is rented out by app writers. However, app developers pay a 30% portion of revenues for the ability to sell via the App Store. Moreover, people pay Apple directly for apps via iTunes; they do not pay developers. Initial rulings in the case sided with Apple, but today's decision reversed lower courts, as iPhone owners cannot buy or install apps via any method other than the App Store, lest they jailbreak (or hack) their device. Apple maintains that this policy protects end user security, but a collection of iPhone owners contend it leads to less competition and higher pricing for mobile apps. It's not clear what the next steps in the case are, nor where they may lead.
  • Android Wear 2.0 is coming in early February - An email sent out to Android Wear developers has revealed that Android Wear 2.0, a major upgrade to the platform announced at Google I/O back in May 2016, will be released in early February 2017. Previously the update was expected to launch in "early 2017". Developer previews for Android Wear 2.0 have been available since the middle of 2016, with Google originally eyeing an end-of-2016 launch for the update. It's still not clear exactly why Google delayed Android Wear 2.0 to 2017, but more time to polish the operating system and its apps is usually a good thing.

Latest Win10 Update Has Broken Multi-Screen Gaming - tech
(hx) 11:34 AM CET - Jan,12 2017 - Post a comment / read (4)
Microsoft has just released its new Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB3213986) which has broken multi-screen gaming, with the company noting that there are "known issues". This means gamers that are running triple-display setups with AMD EyeFinity and NVIDIA Surround Sound will experiencing stuttering or clipped screens when running a game, but it should be fine in 2D applications. There's a workaround for this issue, with Microsoft adding that gamers can run their 3D apps in non-fullscreen mode - either in window-maximized, or just windowed modes. But it gets better. Microsoft suggests that gamers disconnect their other displays, leaving just a single display connected to the PC for the game to work. Because, you know - that's why you spend thousands of dollars for the bleeding edge of high-end gaming, to disconnect those expensive LCDs.

CyberPowerPC intros VR-ready PC for $499 - tech
(hx) 08:44 PM CET - Jan,10 2017 - Post a comment
CyberPowerPC has introduced a new entry-level virtual reality-ready pre-built PC with AMD’s Radeon RX 470 on board for $499 at Best Buy and Amazon. That’s a new low for an off-the-shelf VR-capable configuration, and it’s also available as a bundle with Oculus Rift for $1,099.98 - or exactly what you’d pay if you purchased the two separately. Even if there's no price break for the combo, this gets us closer to a ready-to-roll VR rig and top-tier VR headset that will cost you under $1K, all-in. The processor in the machine is an AMD FX 4350 quad-core, and the Radeon RX 470 has 4GB of dedicated GDDR5 RAM for pushing the pixels in those VR experiences. There’s also 8GB of RAM for the system, and a 1 TB spinning platter hard drive to store your stuff, which should be ample room for a variety of titles.

  • Intel Says It Has a 5G Modem - Intel has announced next-generation modem for mobile devices, aptly named the Intel 5G Modem. Intel says the idea behind the 5G Modem is to help push the development of 5G ahead. The modem relies on key 3GPP 5G NR (new radio) technology, such as massive MIMO, low-latency, and advanced channel coding. It also includes both sub-6 GHz and mmWave capabilities. Intel hopes the modem will support early 5G field trials and at the same time drive the 3GPP NR specification forward. Intel is working with AT&T and other companies to test and define what might eventually be 5G.
  • AT&T Not Waiting for 5G Standard, to Offer Consumer Trials - AT&T has laid out more of it is roadmap for 5G and brazenly said it is moving forward despite the lack of standardization for 5G. "We're not waiting until the final standards are set to lay the foundation for our evolution to 5G," said John Donovan, chief strategy officer and group president, Technology and Operations. "We're executing now." AT&T says its data network has seen a 250,000% increase in traffic since 2007, largely driven by video. It feels it needs to move on 5G now in order to accommodate the growing demand for data. The International Telecommunication Union isn't expected to formally ratify 5G until 2020, though some of the broad definitions of 5G have already been defined, such as 1 Gbps speeds and latency under 5 milliseconds. AT&T claims its lab trials have already delivered peak speeds of 14 Gbps with latency as low as 3 milliseconds. It says some portions of its LTE 4G network will offer 1 Gbps (theoretical max) speeds later this year thanks to small cells, densification, and 3- and 4-channel carrier aggregation. AT&T's DirecTV Now customers in Austin, Texas, will be the first to trial AT&T's 5G network technology during the first half of the year. The trial will involve fixed wireless 5G using mmWave in a handful of locations with a handful of devices in the Austin area. The tests may begin as soon as March. The company has been testing this same technology with Intel and Ericsson in Austin since last fall and says it saw consistent 1 Gbps speeds. AT&T plans more 5G trials this year in the 28 GHz and 39 GHz bands using the framework developed so far by the 3GPP.

As such, many web companies have indicated that they will not be willing to relocate their data centres just to comply with the law.
