Patch that unblocks Windows Update in Win7 & 8.1 - tech

As I have already reported, Microsoft has blocked Windows Update in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on AMD's and Intel's next-gen processors. However, GitHub user Zeffy was able to re-enable Windows Update in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on both Intel's and AMD's newest CPUs with a very, very, very simple tweak. He has created a patch that removes Microsoft's limitation. Going into more details, all this patch does is change some values inside the wuaueng.dll file.

Microsoft has implemented two new functions; IsCPUSupported(void) and IsDeviceServiceable(void). This patch basically forces the two functions output '1', which, in return, fools the OS into 'thinking' that the CPU and PC configuration is supported. This starts the update procedure, delivering new security updates to those that have been blocked by Microsoft. The only downside, according to Zeffy, is that you have to apply a new patch whenever wuaueng.dll gets updated.

Microsoft announced that the Creators Update for Windows 10 is rolling out today. This new update for Windows 10 features Game Mode, and offers built-in Beam game streaming. As Microsoft noted, the initial release of Game Mode works best when your PC is experiencing resource contention. This basically means that when your PC is working hard to run your game and possibly other concurrent software, Game Mode can help manage system resources more efficiently and optimize them for gaming.
To enable Game Mode, pull up the Game bar (Windows key + G) and click on the Settings button. There you’ll be able to opt the running game into using Game Mode. And the Creators Update is just the first milestone in our commitment to Game Mode and Windows 10 performance improvements for PC gaming.

This gives everyone the opportunity to show their creativity as a game broadcaster. And it gets better. Thanks to Beam’s low latency technology, Beam streams have less than a second of delay, enabling streamers to engage and interact with their viewers in near real-time. What’s more, Beam enables streamers to incorporate interactive features such as animation and sound triggers right into their stream. The ability to manage your Beam broadcast and interact with fellow gamers on chat will appear as overlays

Nvidia released new GeForce 381.65 WHQL drivers. The new drivers offer optimal gaming experience for Quake Champions Closed Beta and adds support for the new Nvidia Titan Xp. They are WHQL-signed and ready for the Windows 10 Creators Update. Added as well is DTS X and Dolby Atmos support for 5.1.2 speaker configuration through the GPU's in-built audio controlleron HDMI and DP as well as added support for Dolby Vision.

With the announcement of GTX 1080Ti, it seemed as if once again Nvidia's Titan GPU would become obsolete since the GTX counterpart was delivering almost equivalent performance at a considerably reduced price. To make sure that doesn't happen, Nvidia has now announced yet another Titan GPU, built once again on the Pascal architecture. The new Titan GPU, Titan Xp (as opposed to 2016's Titan X Pascal) is an upgraded version of the old gpu delivering more performance at the same price tag. The Titan Xp utilizes GP102 GPU and comes equipped with an upgraded 12GB of 11.4 Gbps GDDR5X memory, 3840 CUDA cores at 1.6GHz and 12 TFLOPs of computing power. Those cores are faster, too, with a boost clock of 1,582MHz compared to the Titan X's 1,531MHz. The new Titan Xp will be priced once again at $1,200 making it still considerably more expensive than a GTX 1080Ti but with better on-paper performance. How the benchmarks will hold up remains to be seen.

Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.4.1 has just been released by AMD. Here are the two big "new" things that the ReLive driver supports and both are specific to Vive and Oculus VR gaming.

- Support for Oculus' Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW) on Radeon R9 Fury series, Radeon R9 390 series and Radeon R9 290 series graphics products. ASW compares previously rendered frames, detects the motion between them, and extrapolates the position of scene components to create a new synthetic frame. This technology helps avoid dropped frames and can provide an overall smoother VR experience on the Oculus Rift.

- Support for SteamVR Asynchronous Reprojection on Radeon RX 480 and Radeon RX 470 graphics products on Microsoft Windows 10. Asynchronous Reprojection reduces judder to provide an overall smoother and more comfortable VR experience on the HTC Vive.

  • Beastly Next-Gen DDR5 To Offer Twice The Bandwidth And Density Of DDR4 Memory - DDR5 is going to be two times faster than DDR4, and of course more power-efficient (which should come in handy for mobile devices). The current highest clock JEDEC allows before "overclocking" takes over is DDR4-2400, with timings ranging from 15~18 for the CAS latency, as well as tRCD, and tRP. If DDR5 is to be "twice as fast", that could imply that we could end up seeing DDR5-4800, or perhaps a safer 4266 (twice the standard 2133MHz). If that somehow doesn't sound impressive, consider the fact that DDR4-4266 are the fastest kits sold today, and they're far from common.
  • Dell's Jaw-Dropping 8K Monitor Now Available to Order - Dell's exquisitely detailed UltraSharp 32 8K monitor is now up for grabs - if you just so happen to have a spare $5,000 lying around, that is.   • Orange Pi 2G-IoT Matches Raspberry Pi Zero W’s $10 Price - Just over a month ago, Raspberry Pi upgraded its Zero with 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity, dubbing it the Zero W. This new wireless functionality came with an added cost, doubling the price of the computing board from $5 to $10. Not to be outdone, Chinese company Orange Pi has come out with its own counter to the Raspberry Pi Zero W. The Orange Pi 2G-IoT incorporates 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1, but it goes one step further by providing a 2G radio for cellular connectivity. The 2G radio supports GSM/GPRS data connections, and there is a SIM card slot on the underside of the board. Other features include an RDA Micro 8810PL ARM Cortex A5 32-bit processor running at 1GHz, 256MB of RAM, a Vivante GC860 GPU and 512MB of onboard NAND storage. External storage is supported by a microSD slot and you'll find a single USB 2.0 port. You'll also find a camera connector, 40-pin GPIO connector, which is compatible with Raspberry Pi accessories.
  • "Windows 10 Destroyed Our Data!" Microsoft Hauled into US Court - Three people in Illinois have filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming that its Windows 10 update destroyed their data and damaged their computers. The complaint charges that Microsoft Windows 10 is a defective product and that its maker failed to provide adequate warning about the potential risks posed by Windows 10 installation – specifically system stability and data loss. Microsoft "failed to exercise reasonable care in designing, formulating, and manufacturing the Windows 10 upgrade and placing it into the stream of commerce," the complaint claims. "As a result of its failure to exercise reasonable care, [the company] distributed an operating system that was liable to cause loss of data or damage to hardware."
  • Crazy Game Controller Manufacturer Mad Catz Files For Bankruptcy After Decades Of Innovation - So what happened? Three words: Rock Band 4. Mad Catz announced in 2015 that it would co-publish Rock Band 4 along with Harmonix and produce the controllers for it. Under the agreement, Mad Catz was in charge of pretty much everything but digital sales and content. Unfortunately, Mad Catz may have put too many eggs in one basket. The game did not do as well as anticipated, and the company was forced to lay off 37% of its workforce in February 2016. (PR)

  • DoubleAgent Zero-Day Attacking Norton Antivirus - Security researchers at Cybellum have identified a Zero-Day attack that grants full control over many Antivirus solutions on the market today. Born from the ashes of a 15 year old Microsoft tool, Cybellum has named this attack "Double Agent". Double Agent uses Microsoft's fairly ancient "MS Application Verifier" to infiltrate it's victims.
  • Apple Patches 911 Bug Via iOS 10.3 - Apple this week distributed iOS 10.3 and with it a plug for a serious vulnerability that impacted 911 call centers. Last fall, an Arizona man created code that forced iPhones to call 911 over and over. The code, which appeared as a link, spread via Twitter and it was later shared as a prank. The results led to thousands of unintentional calls to 911 centers is some 12 states around the country. Some of those call centers were overwhelmed. The exploit only impacted iPhones and did not cause problems for Android devices. The person who wrote the code was arrested and charged with computer tampering. Apple said iOS 10.3 prevents the accidental 911 calls from connecting by requiring a second confirmation press before dialing calls initiated via links. Apple is working with developers that include phone-making functionalities within their own apps to ensure the fix is universal.

  • Apple Responds to Hacker's Threat to Wipe Millions of iPhones - It was reported on Tuesday that a hacker group claimed access to as many as 559 million Apple email and iCloud login credentials, which they threatened to wipe unless Infinite Loop would pay them $75,000 in cryptocurrency or $100,000 worth of iTunes gift cards. Apple claims it is all total BS
  • Over 15,000 Fraudulent PayPal Certificates Issued to Phishing Sites - Let's Encrypt was launched publicly in December of 2015 under the premise that websites would be encrypted and served to the end user over Transport Layer Security (TLS). The thought was that TLS would protect user data from pilfering. Many Cyber Security experts expressed fear that these free certificates would be abused as the issuance processes are automated. These fears were realized when encryption pro Vincent Lynch confirmed that 96.7% of the 15,270 security certificates including the term "Paypal" were issued to illegal phishing sites.
  • Apple Announces (Product) Red iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus - Apple today debuted Red versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The devices are identical to the iPhones released last year, the only difference is the color. A portion of the proceeds from (Product) Red iPhone sales will contribute to the Global Fund to help fight AIDs. The red-colored iPhones will only be available in 128 GB and 256 GB capacities. The 128 GB (Product) Red iPhone 7 costs $749 and the 128 GB (Product) Red iPhone 7 Plus costs $869. The special edition (Product) Red iPhones will be available online and in stores beginning Friday, March 24. In addition, Apple today gave the iPhone SE a modest update thanks to improved storage capacities. Beginning this week, the iPhone SE will be available in 32 GB and 128 GB versions. These replace the 16 GB and 64 GB models. The refreshed 32 GB iPhone SE starts at $399 and will be available online and in stores starting March 24. Other than the storage boost, the iPhone SE's other specs remain unchanged. Apple first released the iPhone SE about this same time last year. It has a 4-inch display and relies on the same design Apple used for the 2012 iPhone 5 and 2013 iPhone 5s.

  • Apple Releases iOS 10.3 to Everyone - Apple today made iOS 10.3 available to the public after several months of beta testing. The most significant feature of iOS 10.3 is a tool called Find My AirPods, which helps people locate lost earbuds via an audio alert. The system update also adopts the Apple File System, refreshes the Apple ID profile behaviors, tweaks animations, and provides more details concerning iCloud storage use. Other features include wider HomeKit compatibility with connected lightswitches, alerts concerning out-of-date apps, more CarPlay actions, and refined SiriKit behaviors for voice-based payments and other activities. People who own an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch can download and install iOS 10.3 for free. Apple also released final, public builds of watchOS 3.2, tvOS 10.2, OS X Sierra 10.12.4, and Xcode 8.3.
  • Google Gives Developers An Early Look at Android O - Google today announced the first preview of Android O, the unnamed next version of its core mobile operating system. This early version of Android O brings with it a handful of new features that clearly target developers and device makers more so than end users. The primary consumer-facing function is a picture-in-picture viewer for Android phones (this feature is already available to Android tablets). Developers will be able to take advantage of a new background limiter, which can control how much power apps are allowed to consume when running in the background. Android O takes a new stab a notifications with what it calls notification channels. These will let users manage which types of notifications are allowed from individual apps, including new visual groupings that make it easier to see what's going on. The new Autofill API will let developers of apps such as password managers choose autofill defaults across keyboards. Adaptive icons for the home screen will automatically change based on system preferences so they can adapt to different phones and user interfaces. Android O adds new support for Bluetooth audio codecs, such as Sony's LDAC codec. Other features include: in-app pinning of shortcuts and widgets; support for Wi-Fi Aware; XML fonts; wide-gamut color apps; new WebView APIs; expanded accessibility options; improved support for multiple displays; and changes to the MediaPlayer, including new support for the MPEG2_TS codec for media streaming. Developers can install this first Android O preview on their Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, and Nexus Player, but will have to do so manually via their computer. Google says Android O will see at least one more developer preview before the company releases a consumer beta of the operating system. Google didn't suggest when the final version of Android O might be ready, but it typically releases new Android operating systems in the fall.
  • Samsung's Bixby Is Far More than A Voice Assistant for the Galaxy - The Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones feature Bixby, a voice-based user interface developed by Samsung. It's more advanced than a simple voice assistant, as it voice-enables every function of an app. At its core, anything you can do with touch on the phone you can do with voice through Bixby. That means opening apps, but then also selecting menu items or other on-screen controls within those apps. Bixby is also able to take advantage of the camera for what Samsung calls Bixby Vision. It can translate languages, read business cards, recognize landmarks, and read QR codes. Samsung said it developed Bixby in order to minimize friction between the user and the phone in terms of how voice commands are issued and understood. Samsung calls Bixby a user interface that relies on artificial intelligence. Samsung adapted Bixby's ability to listen and understand commands based on how people speak, rather than force people to issue specific commands. Bixby embraces something it calls "completeness" - meaning if an app is Bixby enabled, Bixby will be able to interact with nearly every task that app is capable of completing. Bixby is contextual, which means it will work seamlessly in voice mode or touch screen mode without forcing people to start over or lose their place within a command sequence. Last, Bixby will include cognitive tolerance, or the ability to "understand commands with incomplete information and execute the commanded task to the best of its knowledge." The Galaxy S8 and S8+ each include a dedicated Bixby button. Owners can press the Bixby button and issue the command they want without first unlocking the phone. Samsung says a small subset of apps on the Galaxy S8 are Bixby-enabeld at launch, though it expects to add more over time. The company will release an SDK so third-party developers can add Bixby functionality to their own apps
  • HTC can Track Eye Movement in VR - HTC has devised a new system where companies can place advertising in VR applications and then HTC can track your interest in the advertisement. If your gaze leaves the advertisement such as you intentionally looking away, the advertiser doesn't have to pay for the placement.
  • Twitch Adds 1080p/60fps Video Support - Twitch.tv has added 1080p/60fps streaming capabilities to their service by increasing the allowed ingest bitrate to 6000 kbps. This will allow for much more fluid video playback on channels where it has been enabled. Those channels will have lower bitrate options also! It is coming to all of Twitch in the coming weeks, but for now they are rolling it out slowly to a few channels. To test and see if your channel supports the new higher bitrate formats, visit Twitch Inspector and see if your channel supports "Transcode V2." If so then you're ready to test the higher bitrates and increased quality streams
  • Facebook Messenger Adds Message Reactions and @Replies - Facebook has announced several new features for Messenger that should make the messaging application even more interactive. First, the app adds the ability to react to messages in one-on-one or group chats. Pressing and holding any message brings up the love, smile, wow, sad, angry, yes, and no emojis, which can then be applied to the highlighted message. These same reactions are already available for news feed items. Participants in the conversation will be alerted when their messages receive a reaction, such as notifications on the lock screen. Messenger also gains the ability to mention specific people in a group chat by using an @reply construction. Using the @ symbol and then a participant's Facebook name calls them out specifically within a conversation. Like the reactions, @replies added to messages will generate notifications for those mentioned in the thread. The new tools are reaching Facebook Messenger for Android and iOS in the days ahead.
  • AMC is working on streaming subscription service -AMC is planning to launch a streaming subscription service that would offer commercial-free access to the network's catalog of hit shows including The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. Unlike most standalone offerings that can be used by anyone willing to pay, AMC's offering will reportedly be available exclusively to cable and satellite TV subscribers. What's more, it won't be cheap. Sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters that AMC is considering pricing the subscription service between $4.99 and $6.99 per month.

Does this mean that Prime Air is ready to roll out?   • Norway Wants to Build the World’s First Full-Scale Ship Tunnel - The Stad Penninsula in Norway has one of the most dangerous coastlines in the region. As the meeting place between the Norwegian Sea and North Sea, the turbulent waters have claimed the lives of dozens sailors over the last several decades. Which may explain why Norway's top coastal agency wants to dig a $272 million, mile-long "ship tunnel" to create a safer passage for commercial vessels. Designed to accommodate ships as massive as Norway's Hurtigruten cruise vessels, the tunnel would be nearly 150 feet tall, 118 feet wide, and more than a mile long. The Norwegian Parliament earmarked one billion Norwegian kroner, or around $118 million, for the project in the National Transport Plan for 2014-2023. Construction is set to begin as early as 2018.

Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ Go for Broke - tech

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S8 and S8+, its flagship smartphones for 2017. The phones marry aluminum frames to curved glass panels as they adopt what Samsung calls its Infinity Display. The Infinity Display moves from the industry standard 16:9 aspect ratio to a taller 18.5:9 ratio with 2,960 by 1,440 pixels. The devices share nearly all features other than size and battery capacity. Where the S8 has a 5.8-inch display and 3,000mAh battery, the S8+ boasts a massive 6.2-inch screen and 3,500mAh battery. The phones see Samsung drop the physical home button that has long adorned the front of its handsets in favor of on-screen controls and a virtual home button that's unmarked in the area below the screen. This allowed Samsung to reduce bezels along the top, sides, and bottom edges, meaning the front is 83% display. Samsung says the displays are mobile HDR certified and offer more room for multitasking. Core features include Snapdragon 835 processors with 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and support for memory cards. The phones are rated IP68 for protection against water and dust. They include rear-mounted fingerprint readers, front-mounted iris scanners, as well as wireless and rapid charging. The main camera has a 12-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization and an aperture of f/1.7. The front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor and also an aperture of f/1.7 with autofocus and face detection. Ports include USB-C and 3.5mm headphone jack. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ run Android 7 Nougat with Samsung's new Bixby voice-enabled user interface, as well as improved Samsung Health, Samsung Connect, and Samsung Knox apps. DeX is similar in concept to Microsoft's Continuum product. For the S8 and S8+, the DeX includes HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and cooling functions. The software relies on features baked into Nougat to help scale the Android user interface for desktop screens. It supports full multitasking with moveable windows and runs most standard Android apps. Phone apps, text messaging, and other essential mobile communications will all function normally. DeX and the S8/S8+ support Microsoft Office, with Adobe Lightroom and PhotoShop Express coming soon. A special Samsung browser provides a full desktop internet experience. Pricing and availability of the DeX are to be announced at a later date.

AMD has released a new driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, the AMD Radeon Crimson ReLive Edition 17.3.3 introduce a Crossfire profile for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and fixes some texture flickering issues in it in multi-GPU configurations. In order to enable Crossfire, AMD will users will have use this command line: '-RenderDevice.AmdCrossfireEnable 1'.

Vulkan will officially support multi-GPUs - tech

Khronos Group has announced that Vulkan will also support multi-GPUs in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (as well as in Linux).
The good news is that the Vulkan multi-GPU specification is very definitely NOT tied to Windows 10. It is possible to implement the Vulkan multi-GPU extension on any desktop OS including Windows 7, 8.X and 10 and Linux.

- The use of WDDM is referring to the use of Vulkan multi-GPU functionality on Windows. On other OS, WDDM is not necessary to implement the Vulkan multi-GPU extension.

- On Windows, the use of LDA mode can make implementing Vulkan multi-GPU functionality easier, and will probably be used by most implementations, but it is not strictly necessary.

- If an implementation on Windows does decide to use LDA mode, it is NOT tied to Windows 10. LDA mode has been available on many versions of Windows, including Windows 7 and 8.X.

Soon, when you buy a new PC, it won't support Windows 7 or 8. Microsoft has announced a change to its support policy that lays out its plans for future updates to its older operating systems, and the new rules mean that future PC owners with next-generation Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm processors will need to use Windows 10. This new policy doesn't mean that Windows 7 and 8.1 are no longer supported in general. The two operating systems will continue to get updates through January 14th, 2020 and January 10th, 2023, respectively. But that's only if you're using hardware that was contemporaneous with those operating systems.

Sure, PC users can use WSUS offline as a workaround. Still, those wishing to upgrade to newers CPUs will now also have to think about the cost of upgrading their operating systems!

As expected, and just in time for the release of the Mass Effect: Andromeda trial version, AMD has kicked out new drivers. The new Radeon Crimson ReLive 17.3.2 drivers are said to boost the game’s performance by around 12% on an RX 480 and they have added an AMD Optimised Tesselation Profile. The drivers are available now from the AMD website so grab them and find out if Mass Effect: Andromeda performance has been boosted. Also, take note of some of the issues with these drivers as they affect Battlefield 1 and Ghost Recon Wildlands.

YouTube TV includes a cloud-based DVR with unlimited storage where people can save and access their shows from practically anywhere. Google will allow people to store recordings for free for up to nine months. Each YouTube TV subscription includes up to six individual accounts for personalized recommendations and DVR recording. Google says YouTube TV will go live in the largest U.S. markets soon, with others to follow shortly thereafter. YouTube TV costs $35 per month and doesn't require any contracts or commitments.

  • Google Revamps Gmail, Drive, Hangouts with Businesses in Mind - Google this week made significant change to its core productivity suite, including its email, online storage, and messaging tools.
  • Google rolls out a new video conferencing tool - Google has launched a new video conferencing app called Meet by Google Hangouts, meant as a business-friendly alternative to the company's consumer-focused Hangouts app. The web and mobile application is the latest addition to Google's lineup of business products known as G Suite, allowing high-definition video meetings with up to 30 participants. The service looks pretty straightforward judging from its landing page - it lets you join a meeting by entering a code and shows you scheduled meetings, but you can't yet start a new conference from the site. For the iOS app you also have features like dial-in numbers for people who can't access the video stream, as well as integration with Gmail and Google Calendar.
  • Google Bakes Instant Translation Into Gboard App - Google today updated its Gboard keyboard application for Android devices and made it possible to translate text in real time. Clicking the new translate icon loads Google Translate, which can instantly translate words as you type. Gboard also made it easier to find emojis and GIFs as the app will suggest them as users type. Further, GIFs can now be shared with other messaging apps, including Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Hangouts, and Allo. Other new features include an expanded set of scenic views for backdrops and support for search in right-to-left languages. Gboard for Android is free to download from the Google Play Store.
  • Google Extends Neural Machine Translation to More Tongues - Google has updated its Google Translate service and made it possible to generate higher-quality translations for a handful of new languages. Specifically, Google has applied its neural machine translation technique to Hindi, Russian, and Vietnamese. This methodology translates entire sentences at a time, rather than individual words or smaller phrases. The results create more accurate translations that sound more natural and are better at conveying the intended meaning of the original content. Google has already applied neural machine translation to a number of other languages, such as Portuguese and Turkish. Google says it will apply neural machine translations to more languages over time. The improved Hindi, Russian, and Vietnamese is available thanks to an update on the web, as well as to the mobile Google Translate app for Android and iOS devices
  • All 2017 iPhones Will Have Lightning Connectors with USB-C - News from earlier this week suggesting Apple could replace the Lightning connector in the iPhone 8 with USB Type-C came as a surprise to many. But it seems the Wall Street Journal, which ran the report, may not have been totally accurate; there will be USB Type-C, but only on one end of the power cord – the handset itself will retain the Lightning port.
  • T-Mobile's "Unlimited" Data Cap Is Now 30GB - T-Mobile is attempting to fend off its competitors again. This time, they are making their "unlimited" plan more attractive by raising the deprioritization limit by 2GB. Now, you'll have to exceed 30GB of usage before your speed is reduced. This gives you about 8GB more of freedom than the competition; Verizon and Sprint will start throttling you at 22GB and 23GB respectively. Verizon Wireless and AT&T may slow down users in areas of network congestion after they reach 22GB in a single month; Sprint allows 1GB extra at 23GB.
  • T-Mobile Brings Back Free iPhone 7 Offer - T-Mobile today resurrected its offer of a free iPhone 7 to people who switch to the Uncarrier, though there are lots of requirements and caveats to the offer. To start, customers must port their number in from another carrier, sign up for the T-Mobile One plan, and trade in an eligible device to score the free iPhone 7. Moreover, T-Mobile is requiring people to purchase the new iPhone 7 (or 7 Plus) on an equipment installment plan. T-Mobile will provide instant credit toward the new device based on the value of the trade-on. The devices eligible for trade in are limited to the most recent iPhones (6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus) and Galaxies (S7, S7 edge, S7 Active). T-Mobile will then send a MasterCard gift card in the mail for the balance of the new iPhone 7. That gift card can be applied to the remaining monthly EIP payments on the account, but it doesn't have to be. The offer is only available from March 3 to March 16 in T-Mobile stores.
  • Facebook Trots Out Virtual Reality App for Samsung Gear VR - Facebook today announced Facebook 360 for Gear VR, a dedicated app to help Samsung device owners find and consume 360-degree Facebook content. The app is available to compatible Galaxy devices, such as the Note 5, S7, and S7 edge. The app features four main feeds for finding VR content. The Explore tab lets people find the most popular VR content from media companies and organizations, while the Following tab lets people find the content created and shared by their friends and family. The app also allows people to save 360-degree content from their News Feed into a dedicated folder, as well as relive memories via the Timeline function, which highlights the user's own 360-degree photos and videos. The Facebook 360 for Gear VR app also supports social interactions, such as likes. Facebook claims there are more than 25 million 360-degree photos and more than 1 million 360-degree videos available on Facebook. The Facebook 360 for Gear VR app can be found within the Oculus app on compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

The chaps over at HardOCP have posted Zarathustra's Nvidia Price History. They wrote: "Our method is simple; pick NVIDIA's top end GPU introduction price for each era and estimate inflation using the Bureau of Labor and Statistics published values for the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) based on the launch date of each GPU. The end period used is January 2017, as these are the most recent published figures. (I doubt there has been much inflation since then.) Once done, we figure out the price in 2017 dollars for every card at launch, and chart those on a graph. The astute reader will notice that Titan cards are absent from this comparison. This was a conscious decision, as Titan cards appear to be in a "halo class" of their own, and the pricing doesn't seem to obey the normal laws of physics (err, normal pricing trends) resulting in the analysis looking odd. We also made the conscious decision to start in 2000, as that seemed like a nice round year to start things at."

Ryzen is finally here and AMD is finally back at the high-end desktop. The new Ryzen 7 series have earned wide-spread acclaim for their incredible multi-threaded performance per dollar value. Could windows 10 be going on full device-style lockdown, requiring you to use apps from the Windows Store? Beta News reports, this is only an option which can be enabled should you so desire, and while it is in the current preview version of the Creators Update coming this year, there is no indication if it will be in the final version or any future version at all.
Before you jump into this, there is something you need to keep in mind. At the moment, this option is only available in build 15042 of Windows 10 (also known as Creators Update); it may well remain in future builds, but it's not guaranteed, and there's no way to backport the option to pre-15042 builds.

With that in mind, follow these steps:

    1.Open up Settings and head to Apps.
    2.In the Apps & features section click the drop down menu beneath the Installing apps heading.
    3.Select the option labeled Allow apps from the Store only.
    4.Close Settings.

That's all there is to it. You can also opt to display a warning about non-Store apps if a user tries to install a classic Win32 app (but the installation will not be blocked) -- just select the Prefer apps from the Store, but allow apps from anywhere option.
While the concept of a locked down Windows where you, the user, do not have the freedom to install the software of your choice does sound like a grim dystopian future, and it may actually happen on the future Cloud version of the operating system, Microsoft's alternative to ChromeOS, it is also not without its merits.

  • AI Learns to Write Its Own Code by Stealing from Other Programs - Microsoft and University of Cambridge have developed a machine learning system called DeepCoder that can steal code from other programs and use it to create it's own program. This A.I. will eventually be able to create a program from the suggestions of a person who doesn't know how to code. DeepCoder has learned a process called program synthesis where it would piece together lines of code to create a desired result like any programmer would. Machine Learning allows DeepCoder to quickly scour databases of code and assemble code according to probability of usefulness. DeepCoder is becoming very efficient at finding code as it will search obscure programs that many people wouldn't have thought of. It gets faster each time that it is given a problem as it creates a database of code that worked. DeepCoder can create working programs in a fraction of a second. Right now the A.I. is limited to 5 lines of code, but using the right coding language, it can create fairly complicated programs. Others are working on similar tech like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that has created a machine learning system that can fix broken software with working code from other programs.
  • Microsoft Issues Some Windows Security Patches in February - While the majority of security patches won't be released until March's Patch Tuesday rolls around, Microsoft has taken the decision to issue some Flash patches for Edge and Internet Explorer, and these will be arriving today. Exactly what these patches resolve isn't currently known. Microsoft emailed some of its largest customers to alert them to the forthcoming patches but went into no details beyond: Microsoft is planning to release security updates for Adobe Flash Player. These updates will be offered to the following operating systems: Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016. No other security updates are scheduled for release until the next scheduled monthly update release on March 14, 2017.
  • Hair-Width Fiber Reads Data from the Brain - MIT researchers have developed a hair-thin fiber capable of transmitting optical, electrical, and chemical signals back and forth to the brain. The new technology is the result of two years of development, and with some further improvements and tweaks, could dramatically change how we understand different brain regions and their interconnections. Development of the new fiber was a collaboration between material scientists, chemists, biologists, and other specialists. The results have been published in the journal Nature Neuroscience. The team's next goal is to reduce the size of the fiber even further, and make it closer still to neural tissue
  • 5G technology to feature 20Gbps download - A 5G cell will be able to handle a downlink of at least 20Gbps and an uplink of 10Gbps via a single mobile base station. It is worth noting that these are theoretical speeds for a single user if they have a fixed wireless broadband, and in reality, all users on a cell will get a portion of that 20Gbps. 5G will also be able to support at least one million users per square kilometer.
  • BlackBerry KEYone: Hands-on video - TCL unveiled its new premium Android handset, the BlackBerry KEYone. It promises "unparalleled security", thanks to its "hardened" version of Android, which includes unique protective features not available on other Android devices. TCL also says that the handset will offer a full day of battery life - in fact, at 3,505mAh, it's got the biggest battery of any BlackBerry phone to date. But perhaps the most notable feature is the physical QWERTY keyboard - a beloved element of BlackBerry devices for the company's biggest fans
  • iPhone 8 May Pack "Revolutionary" Camera That Snaps 3D Selfies - The camera will function by merging the depth information captured by the IR transmitting and receiving modules with the traditional 2D images captured by the front camera. This not only could be used for the iPhone 8's long-rumored iris recognition feature, but even in some gaming applications -- and future AR/VR experiences -- where users could place their own 3D-scanned face in the game using a quick selfie. Today's news of an overhaul to the front-facing camera of the iPhone 8 follows speculation surrounding the potential of Apple dropping Touch ID and instead focusing on either 3D facial recognition or iris scanning as the device's main security feature. JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall has stated that facial recognition could be a more secure alternative, and help increase Apple Pay adoption with retailers and financial institutions.
  • Apple says that it has fixed most iPhone 6 shutdown issues with iOS 10.2.1 - Back in November, it was discovered that the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus all had issues that would cause them to shut down without warning. While not all devices were affected, Apple issued a statement to TechCrunch to say that it has fixed the issue on most devices. To be more specific, with iOS 10.2.1 - the latest version of the OS - 70% of iPhone 6 and 80% of iPhone 6s handsets won't experience the issue anymore. According to Apple, over 50% of active devices have already upgraded to version 10.2.1, which on a side note, adds a bit of context to the news from earlier this week that iOS 10.x is running on 79% of active iOS devices.
  • Tucson woman's iPhone 7 catches fire - An 18-year-old Tucson woman is searching for answers after her iPhone 7 caught fire on Wednesday. Apple, understandably, is investigating the incident.
  • Samsung Makes Its Secure Folder A Downloadable App - Samsung today released its Secure Folder through the Galaxy Apps Store. Secure Folder is a protected space for smartphones that can store files, documents, images, videos, or other content that the owner wishes to lock away. Samsung says the Secure Folder can act as a way for people to set up separate profiles for apps on the phone, as well, ensuring that only the protected content is available to those profiles. Samsung expects people will use standard tools such as PIN, pattern, passcode, or biometric verification (fingerprint) to access and manage the Secure Folder. The Samsung Secure Folder has ben around for a while, but it has always been preloaded directly to devices by Samsung. This marks the first time the app is available on its own as a separate download. Samsung is making the app available to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge first, with other models to follow later.
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread Officially No Longer Supported  - Google has put Android 2.3 Gingerbread out to pasture. The update this month follows an announcement Google first made in November regarding Play Services 10.2, which severs backward compatibility with devices running Android 2.3 and older. Google Play Services is the core code behind app compatibility across Android platforms. The Play Services 10.2 update jumps from API level 9 to API level 14. This means Play Services 10.2.0 only supports Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich and up.
  • Xiaomi releases a second teaser for its Pinecone chips - The SoCs expected to be unveiled in the coming days are called the Pinecone V670 and V970 - respectively mid-range and high-range eight-core chips. The V970 is expected to be produced on a new 10nm manufacturing process and pack four A73 cores alongside four power-efficient A53 cores, putting it in close competition with the Kirin 960, while the mid-range V670 is expected to be produced using a much older 28nm manufacturing process with eight A53 cores and would be put in Xiaomi's cheaper phone lineup. Entering the world of semiconductor design and manufacturing makes a sharp point for how Xiaomi views itself against its competition in the smartphone and tablet world and also speaks a lot to how Xiaomi expects to be viewed by others.
  • Samsung's Exynos 9 Chip Uses 10nm Process, Boasts Gigabit Modem - Samsung has announced the Exynos 9 Series 8895 application processor for premium mobile devices. The chip relies on Samsung's 10nm FinFET process with 3D transistors. This results in a 27% performance boost while chewing through 40% less power when put up against Samsung's 14nm tech. The 8895 bakes in support for Category 16 LTE with 5xCA for 1 Gbps downloads, and Cat 13 LTE with 2xCA for 225 Mbps uploads. Samsung says the Exynos 9 Series 8895 has an octa-core design with four of Samsung's own CPUs paired with four ARM Cortex A53 cores. It supports the ARM Mali G71 GPU for 3D graphics, 4K quality virtual reality, and 4K video playback up to 120fps. A separate processing unit handles biometric security (iris and fingerprint) for protecting mobile payments, and a Vision Processing Unit is able to scan and recognize its surroundings for panoramic image processing and machine vision. The Exynos 9 Series 8895 is already in mass production and Samsung said it will appear in devices soon. The company is widely expected to debut its 2017 flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, in March. The Galaxy S8 will likely rely on the Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 Modem Powers 1.2Gbps Speeds - Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, which it says is the first Category 18 modem capable of download speeds up to 1.2Gbps. The X20 is manufactured using a 10nm FinFET process. It supports up to 5x20 MHz carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, and up to three aggregated LTE carriers. The X20 LTE modem uses a new RF transceiver that Qualcomm claims is capable of receiving up to 12 spatial streams of LTE data. Each downlink supports 256QAM, while uplinks support 64QAM. Other features include all major carrier technologies, more than 40 LTE frequency bands, LTE Broadcast, and VoLTE with support for Ultra HD Voice. Last, the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem supports Dual SIM Dual VoLTE for advanced use cases. Qualcomm believes the X20 will be ideal for Gigabit LTE networks, which are expected to bridge the gap between today's 4G networks and what will eventually become 5G networks. Qualcomm says the X20 is already sampling, but it won't ship on consumer products until the first half of 2018.
  • Intel Claims LTE Modem to Deliver 1 Gigabit Speeds - Intel today announced the XMM 7560 LTE modem, a fifth-generation wireless radio that can produce broadband-like speeds in a variety of mobile devices. The XMM 7560 is manufactured using Intel's 14nm process and supports LTE Advanced Category 16 for downloads up to 1 Gbps and Category 13 for uploads up to 225 Mbps. The Intel XMM 7560 modem supports 5x carrier aggregation for up to 100 MHz combined bandwidth on the downlink, and 3xCA for up to 60 MHz on the uplink. It also supports 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. Intel says the XMM 7560 works well with its SMARTi 7 RF transceiver, which supports up to 35 LTE bands and 230 carrier aggregation combinations for worldwide compatibility. The XMM 7560 also packs envelope tracking and other power optimization features to improve battery life in smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The Intel XMM 7560 will sample during the first half of the year and Intel expects to see it in consumer devices shortly thereafter. Separately, Intel this week announced new efforts in its push toward 5G. It is working with Nokia, AT&T, Telefonica, 5TONIC, Ericsson, and others to define, prototype, and deliver early 5G products.
  • Disney Develops Method for Wirelessly Powering an Entire Room - Disney has created a prototype living room where 10 objects - a smartphone, a lamp, a fan, an RC car, and more - are powered wirelessly, no cables required. Unlike existing wireless power transfer solutions, which mostly require an object to be placed very close to a wireless charging pad, the objects in Disney's living room can receive power while freely roaming; you can walk into the room with a smartphone in your pocket and it will start charging.

NVIDIA GeForce 378.77 Hotfix driver is out - tech

NVIDIA has released the new GeForce Hotfix driver 378.77, which brings much needed fixes for some of the issues that plagued the GeForce 378.66 WHQL drivers released last week. These include the following:

-    Fixed driver installation errors for laptops with GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 TI GPUs.
-    Fixed crash in Minecraft and some other Java-based titles
-    Resolved ''Debug Mode' as default option on Pascal based GPUs

Of course, this is not a new release. A hotfix driver only includes fixes to serious issues with a previous release that may be affecting a large number of users. Instead of making users wait for the next major WHQL driver release, NVIDIA releases hotfix drivers to get these fixes out more quickly.  If you haven’t noticed any of the above issues in your system, you aren’t required to download this hotfix driver. You should instead wait for the next GeForce WHQL driver to be released. Apart from the fixes, the GeForce 378.77 driver includes all the optimizations and improvements that the GeForce 378.666 WHQL drivers came with. You get optimizations for games such as Sniper Elite 4, For Honor, and Halo Wars 2.

Valve owned Impulsonic has announced that it is ready to release Steam Audio for VR and all games. Steam Audio is the next generation of Phonon spatial audio tools. "Steam Audio delivers a full-featured audio solution that integrates environment and listener simulation. HRTF significantly improves immersion in VR; physics-based sound propagation completes aural immersion by consistently recreating how sound interacts with the virtual environment." What this means to VR gamers is that sound can mapped to the environment much more naturally. You can hear much more realistic sound turning a corner to come down a hallway; more natural sounds when an object bounces off another object, etc.

AMD 1055T testing: Battlefield 1, Fallout 4, Doom, Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The AMD 1055T was released in April of 2010 and even 7 years later it still powers through most games without issues.
