NVIDIA adds DirectX 12 support for its Fermi GPUs - tech
(hx) 09:41 PM CEST - Jul,03 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
With its latest GeForce 384 series graphics drivers, NVIDIA quietly added DirectX 12 API support for GPUs based on its "Fermi" architecture, as discovered by keen-eyed users on the Guru3D Forums. These include the GeForce 400-series and 500-series graphics cards. The support appears to be sufficient to run today's Direct3D feature-level 12_0 games or applications, and completes WDDM 2.2 compliance for GeForce "Fermi" graphics cards on Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703), which could be NVIDIA's motivation for extending DirectX 12 support to these 5+ year old chips. Whether they meet your games' minimum system requirements is an entirely different matter.

The service helps mobile users find and log into free public WiFi networks, particularly those that have shared their login details with Facebook. The idea is to help people on metered data plans access WiFi when possible, though Facebook also says it helps when cellular connection speeds are congested or slow. The Find WiFi tool is buried in the settings of the main Facebook mobile application for Android and iOS devices.
  • EU slaps Google with record $2.7 billion fine  - European Union regulators slapped Google with a record €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) antitrust fine on Tuesday, the latest broadside fired at big American tech companies doing business in the region. The European Commission found that the U.S. tech giant denied "consumers a genuine choice" by using its search engine to unfairly steer them to its own shopping platform. Regulators said that Google must change its behavior within 90 days or face additional penalties.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note8 expected to have 64GB and 128GB variants - According to South Korean website OSEN, a Samsung official revealed that the Galaxy Note8 will have two storage variants, one with 64GB of internal storage and the other with 128GB. In addition to the internal storage, the device will have an expansion slot for microSD cards. The report mentions that the maximum storage can go up to 256GB with a memory card. Since the Galaxy S8 and S8+ already support 256GB cards, it should be safe to assume that the Note8 would as well. It is rumored that the Note8 will be one expensive device starting at €1000, and the 128GB variant will put an even deeper hole in customers' pockets if they choose to get one. Samsung is also expected to launch the refurbished version of the Galaxy Note7 in the coming week.
  • Qualcomm Is Taking Fingerprint Scanners below the Surface - Your fingerprint scanners are going down next summer. As in they're going below the glass and behind the back of your phone, according to Qualcomm. At Mobile World Congress Shanghai on Tuesday, the chipmaker announced new fingerprint sensors that can work underneath your phone's display, through metal and glass, and underwater. Qualcomm expects the first commercial devices using fingerprint sensors underneath glass and metal to start selling in early 2018, while sensors that go under the display should show up by the summer of 2018
  • OnePlus 5's Display Is Inverted, Causes - For some reason, OnePlus decided to mount the display panel upside-down on the OnePlus 5. The company insists that this was intentional and not an oversight, yet it is resulting in an annoyance dubbed "jelly scrolling": this effect causes text to bunch up together and then stretch out when the user is swiping in the opposite direction. There will be no OTA update or RMA to resolve the issue.
  • LG Intros the X charge, an Xfinity Mobile Exclusive - LG has announced the X charge, a smartphone that puts a priority on battery life. Similar to last year's X power, the X charge has an enormous battery with a capacity of 4,500mAh. LG claims the battery can push the phone through an "entire weekend" on a single charge. The power cell is embedded within the phone, but it supports rapid charging. Other features include a 5.5-inch 720 display, 1.5 GHz octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor and the wide-angle selfie camera has a 5-megapixel sensor and LED flash. LG says the X charge also includes Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, and LTE 4G. The phone runs Android 7 Nougat with LG's software features, such as Gesture Shot. The LG X charge reaches Xfinity Mobile stores on June 30. Pricing wasn't immediately shared. Xfinity Mobile is owned and operated by Comcast and runs on Verizon's network.
  • T-Mobile Hits 741 Mbps with LTE-LAA, Deploys LTE-U - T-Mobile today said it, too, has successfully tested LTE-LAA in real-world trials. The company claims its LTE-LAA tests reached 741 Mbps in and around Los Angeles. Like the recent tests conducted by AT&T, T-Mobile's use of LTE-LAA combines airwaves that it owns along with unlicensed spectrum to push speeds upward. T-Mobile says it was able to aggregate 80 MHz between licensed and unlicensed spectrum in its trials to attain the 741 Mbps download rate. More importantly for the short term, T-Mobile has deployed LTE-U in some markets. LTE-U relies on public 5 GHz spectrum (same as WiFi) along with advanced network technologies including carrier aggregation, 256 QAM, and 4x4 MIMO to boost LTE performance. T-Mobile is offering LTE-U in Bellevue, Wash.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Dearborn, Mich.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Richardson, Texas; and Simi Valley, Calif. More markets will score LTE-U service later this year. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is the only device able to take advantage of LTE-U.
  • Virgin Mobile offers first year of unlimited service for $1  - Virgin Mobile USA, which is owned and operated by Sprint, transformed itself today into new provider much more closely aligned with the Virgin brand. Significantly, Virgin Mobile USA is now an iPhone-only carrier, meaning Apple's iPhones are the only phones Virgin will sell moving forward. Virgin has dropped its roster of Android handsets completely. Further, shoppers will be able to buy and activate an iPhone on Virgin Mobile USA at Apple Stores. Pricing for Virgin Mobile iPhones starts at $279 for the 32 GB iPhone SE and ranges up to $969 for the 256 GB iPhone 7 Plus. According to the company's web site, Virgin Mobile does not offer financing for iPhones and customers will have to pay full price. The company now offers only a single service plan. For $50 per month, Virgin Mobile USA provides unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S. International roaming add-ons start at $5 per month. There are limitations on Virgin's plan: video playback is capped at 480p, music is streamed at 500Kbps, and gaming is streamed at 1.5Mbps. Virgin says mobile data speeds will be suppressed when the network is congested. For a limited time, Virgin Mobile is offering up to 12 months of service for just $1. The $1 yearly service offer is only available to customers buying a new iPhone and activating it on Virgin's network. Customers will have to sign up by July 31, 2017 to score the $1 deal. At the end of the 12-month service plan for $1, customers will automatically be moved to the $50 plan. Last, the $1 yearly plan and iPhone purchase buy customers access to the Virgin Inner Circle. The Inner Circle is a promotional program that provides benefits with other Virgin-branded properties. For example, Inner Circle members who buy one plane ticket on Virgin Atlantic will be given a second ticket for free. Inner Circle members who book two nights at a Virgin-owned hotel will be able to cash in on a third night for free. Virgin says these offers will be made available to Inner Circle members every few weeks. Customers interested in this package can pre-order one of Virgin Mobile USA's iPhones starting today. The phones and Inner Circle will become available starting June 27. Virgin did not immediately say what current Android-using customers can or should do with their handsets.

AMD Radeon Vega Frontier - game benchmark - tech
(hx) 06:50 PM CEST - Jun,29 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to the results, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition runs The Witcher 3 similarly to NVIDIA’s GTX1080. On max settings (but with Hairworks disabled), #define was getting 90-105fps. It’s worth noting that #define was using a 550W PSU (as such, there might be some throttle happening here) and that he clocked his graphics card at 1600Mhz. This basically confirms our beliefs that the consumer version of the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will be somewhere between the GTX1080 and the GTX1080Ti. After all, and as AMD claimed, the consumer version will perform better in games than the Frontier Edition.

Radeon Vega Frontier Edition Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 10:46 PM CEST - Jun,26 2017 - Post a comment
AMD's Radeon Vega Frontier Edition may be a graphics card made for science (specifically, workstations), but gamers are just as eager to see what it says about the consumer version coming soon. The company's already made a splash this year with its Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper CPUs. To show how the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition could do the same for workstations, AMD officials gave PCWORLD a hands-on preview of one of the first production cards.
While AMD didn’t want to reveal any gaming performance, it agreed to give us a taste of how Radeon Vega Frontier Edition performs in gaming. So we switched out the 8K Dell panel for a pair of Acer 34-inch, wide-aspect 3440x1440 panels, and AMD let us play games on both the Titan Xp and the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition.

To show it wasn’t just an API advantage, AMD let us play Doom using Vulkan, Prey using DirectX 11, and Sniper Elite 4 using DirectX 12. All of the games were set to their highest game settings, and we played at the native resolution of the panels. Although the identical panels were FreeSync-based, FreeSync was switched off on the AMD GPU.

Switching back and forth between the two systems, we’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between the Titan Xp and the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition. Of course, we’d expect such performance from a $1,200 card, but many are concerned that Vega just won’t perform.

From what we’ve seen, that concern may be misplaced. It appears to be plenty fast and, at least for the settings and the games we played, indistinguishable from the competition. Our original estimates after seeing Radeon Vega Frontier Edition with Sniper Elite 4 at Computex still hold: The cards appears to be faster than Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and close to that of a GTX 1080 Ti card.

Galaxy Note 8 specs and price leak - tech
(hx) 05:17 PM CEST - Jun,24 2017 - Post a comment
According to evleaks, the Note 8 will sport a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with the same edge to edge design and 18.5:9 aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8. The Note 8 will also come in black, blue, and gold. On the outside, the Note 8 will have a dual camera setup like the LG G6, iPhone 7 Plus, and recently released OnePlus 5. Both cameras will be 12-megapixels with optical image stabilization. They will be positioned horizontally to the left of the heart rate sensor and flash. Owners of the Galaxy S8 have bemoaned the placement of the fingerprint sensor next to the camera as it often causes unintended smudges to the camera lens. Unfortunately, it seems the Note 8 will have a similar design with the fingerprint sensor once again next to the camera. However, Blass points out that the distance between the sensor and the camera is greater. Obviously, the battery will be a major point of focus for the Note 8 as not to repeat the mistakes of the Note 7. To that end, Blass reports that the battery will be a "relatively conservative" 3300mAh battery. Clearly, Samsung is not trying to take any risks with this iteration. Internally, the Note 8 will be powered by either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 which is on par with the current S8/S8+. It will also have a generous 6GB of RAM which should make general usage and multitasking snappy. Finally, the retail price of the Note 8 will be closer to $1,000 which isn't surprising considering the unlocked Galaxy S8+ sold for $825 at launch

NVIDIA GeForce Prices Skyrocket - tech
(hx) 09:54 PM CEST - Jun,20 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA cards are "drying up" just like certain Radeon cards due to increased interests in mining. The article points out that certain GTX 1060 models are going for $20 or $30 more than MSRP, which doesn’t seem that bad, but then it notes that a GTX 1070 has increased from $380 to $472, with some going for more than $600 - so I suppose "skyrocket" is an appropriate title after all. Have any of you managed to make good profit on this situation yet?
Searching Newegg for the GeForce GTX 1060 shows only two 3GB versions available, and they’re going for $20 to $30 over the card’s $200 MSRP. You can find many more 6GB GTX 1060 cards, but they’re all selling at wildly inflated prices as well. The 6GB cards dipped down to $240 or less around the time the Radeon RX 580 launched, but now every model except one sells for $270 to $310—and that lone exception still sells for $260. A similar situation exists on Amazon, with only a single backordered EVGA 3GB GTX 1060 going for anything near MSRP.

The GeForce GTX 1070 finds itself in even more dire circumstances. Ostensibly a $380 graphics card, the cheapest one you can find on Newegg right now is $472, and most are going for more than $600. The cheapest GTX 1070 I can find on Amazon costs $450. Do not buy a GTX 1070 at those prices. Many models of the more potent GeForce GTX 1080 still sell for $500, or slightly more for customized versions. Picking that up over a $600 GTX 1070 is a no-brainer for gamers.

TechNews - new Windows XP security patches - tech
(hx) 03:47 PM CEST - Jun,18 2017 - Post a comment
  • MSI X99A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard Review - Unfortunately, MSI cuts some corners in noticeable places. The firmware chips aren't socketed for replacement. No voltage check points are included. The BCLK isn't as configurable as we would like. The pump specific fan header offers nothing special for a lot of liquid cooling users. And only one fan header supports PWM. As always, it comes down to price. For most users, the GPC's shortcomings would be inconveniences, not system hampering flaws. But most people don't want to pay extra for a board that doesn't meet all their needs. The lone feature that really sets the board apart is the forward-facing type-C port. Had it been a true USB 3.1 port, the GPC's value would increase greatly. But at only 5Gb/s, it doesn't have much usefulness over the other two 3.0 headers on either side. If you absolutely need that Type-C port, the Gaming Pro Carbon is toward the top of a very short list.
  • Say Hello with Microsoft's Modern Keyboard - The fingerprint sensor lives under the right-hand Windows key and provides an easy avenue for automated login via Windows Hello. Like the Surface Keyboard before it, the Modern keyboard is constructed almost entirely of aluminum. Thanks to that, it weighs just nearly a pound, and Microsoft says it's "virtually indestructible." The Modern keyboard includes two AAA rechargeable batteries that should be good for two month's usage on a full charge.
  • You Can't Open the Microsoft Surface Laptop without Literally - Anyone hoping to get inside the "beautifully designed and crafted" computer will have to pry it open with a knife or dedicated pick in order to defeat Microsoft's plastic welding. Whether or not it's actually worth going through the trouble of defeating said welding is another matter, given that the "glue-filled monstrosity," as iFixit dubs the laptop, has none of the user-upgradeable parts you'd want to see in a PC, like memory or storage. "It literally can't be opened without destroying it," the repair company concludes. "If we could give it a -1 out of 10, we would," iFixit said in an emailed statement on Friday.
  • 10.5-inch IPad Pro Unboxing And First Impressions - Unboxing Apple's brand new 10.5-inch iPad Pro, Smart Keyboard, and Apple Pencil. This video was entirely edited and uploaded from iMovie on the device itself.
  • Microsoft releases new Windows XP security patches - Microsoft issued a 'highly unusual' patch for Windows XP last month to help prevent the spread of the massive WannaCry malware. At least 75,000 computers in 99 countries were affected by the malware which encrypts a computer and demands a $300 ransom before unlocking it. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP in April 2014, but the software giant is now taking the unprecedented move of including it in the company's Patch Tuesday round of security updates. Microsoft says it is releasing updates for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and all other more recent unsupported and supported versions of Windows due to an 'elevated risk' of attacks that are similar to the WannaCry malware. The patches will be made available on Microsoft's Download Center or Windows Update. Microsoft says this move to release security updates for platforms not in extended support 'should not be viewed as a departure from our standard servicing policies,' and that this is an exception based on intelligence that led it to believe government organizations may use these new vulnerabilities to attack Windows systems.
  • Researchers Discover Most Dangerous Infrastructure Malware To Date  - Security researchers at ESET and Dragos inc. have discovered what appears to be the most dangerous form of infrastructure attack malware to date. The companies are calling this malware by two names: Industroyer and CrashOverRide.
  • New Android malware Xavier quietly steals your data - The security analysts identified the malware as “ANDROIDOS_XAVIER.AXM” or Xavier for short. It is an ad library that quietly sends user data to a remote server. What makes it so nasty is the methods it uses to cover its tracks and disguise its activities. First of all, it comes embedded within relatively innocuous apps, like ringtone makers and photo editing apps. Most of these applications appear to be originating from Southeast Asia. Trend Micro has discovered over 800 different apps containing the malware which have been downloaded cumulatively millions of times from Google Play, so it is fairly widespread.  Another thing that makes the malware insidious is the way it is coded into the application. No overtly malicious code is used within the app, so no flags are raised when submitted for approval to the store
  • Apple hires execs responsible for Breaking Bad - Apple has hired Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg to newly created positions to oversee all aspects of video programming. They'll lead video programming worldwide and report to Eddy Cue. The two are joining from Sony Pictures Television, and have been responsible in the past for popular TV series such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The Crown. Erlicht and Van Amburg expressed that Apple has been very successful in pushing its services and consumer products that offer “unparalleled quality”. They said they plan to focus on “delighting customers” by bringing quality Apple programming. It's unclear what they will do in their new position, there's a chance they will help to guide Apple in its product adverts or there's a chance they will help Apple create original TV content for its Apple TV platform; time will tell.
  • Samsung Opens Up Limited Preview of Bixby for Testing - Samsung has announced that U.S. owners of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones can begin to test the voice powers of Bixby. Bixby is more than a simple voice assistant, as people can use it to interact with all facets of the phone's user interface. Samsung calls Bixby an intelligent interface, one that it hopes will help people interact with various types of technology and not just phones. Anyone who owns the Galaxy S8 or S8+ can register with Samsung to test the early preview of Bixby. According to Samsung, the number of testers will be limited. The sign-up is available from Samsung's website. Bixby was originally intended to launch on the Galaxy phones when they went on sale earlier this year. Samsung was forced to delay Bixby, however, and has since said Bixby will arrive later this summer.
  • Sprint Offering a Free Year of Service to Those Who Switch - Sprint today leveled a huge gun at the competition: it will give a year of free unlimited service to people who switch from other postpaid carriers to Sprint. The deal, detailed on Sprint's web site, requires switchers to jump through a lot of hoops and meet a wide variety of conditions. To start, the promotion will provide one year of free talk, text, and data with 10 GB of mobile hotspot per line. The promotion is available through June 30. The free service will expire July 31, 2018, after which Sprint will charge its normal rates for multi-line unlimited accounts. Auto-pay is required.

  • IBM Produces First Nanosheet Transistor for 5nm Silicon -IBM and its Research Alliance partners GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Samsung have developed a first-of-a-kind process to build silicon nanosheet transistors that will enable 5 nanometer chips. The resulting increase in performance will help accelerate cognitive computing, the Internet of Things (IoT) and other data-intensive applications delivered in the cloud. The power savings could mean that the batteries in smartphones and other mobile products could last two to three times longer than today's devices, before needing to be charged.
  • Overclocking to 7GHz Takes More Than Just Liquid Nitrogen - An Engadget writer chronicles his experience at a Computex event, where he was tasked with overclocking to 7GHz with liquid nitrogen. Although a newbie, he managed to hit 7.08372GHz with the help of veteran enthusiasts before his system froze up. One point stressed is making sure the water proofing is right, as condensation getting on the motherboard would spell disaster.
  • Corsair Shows off $18,000 Concept Curve Computer Case - The case costs $18,000 and isn't something that you will eventually find in retail
  • ADATA SD700 512GB External SSD Capsule Review - The performance of the drive leaves us with no doubt that it would be a great portable OS drive, even though ADATA doesn't advertise it for that purpose. After all, we have a real SSD inside - the Ultimate SU800. The JMicron bridge chip is also able to map the SCSI Unmap commands to TRIM, as our little test below shows.
  • MacBook 2017 release date, news and features - Apple has announced updates to its entire MacBook line at WWDC, giving its laptops more powerful specifications in the form of the latest Intel chips. As had been previously rumored, last year's MacBook Pros are getting Intel's Kaby Lake processors, as is Apple's 12-inch MacBook, which is also getting faster SSDs. Additionally, there's a new configuration of the 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar that starts at a cheaper $1,299, while the 15-inch model now has discrete graphics included standard. Otherwise, the MacBook remains unchanged, with the same screen, design, and ports. Diving into the hardware specs, the MacBook now maxes out at up to a 1.3GHz Core i7 processor, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has up to a 3.5GHz Core i7, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro goes up to a 3.1GHz Core i7 processor.
  • Apple Announces the All-New iPad Pro - Apple has recently announced details on the new iPad Pro, which will come in 2 display sizes, 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch. Coming together with your iPad Pros this fall, would also be the brand new iOS 11 that will enhance your Apple experience as well. Both the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch version will feature the world's most advanced display with ProMotion technology as well as an incredible performance with the latest A10X Fusion chip. Specific to the new 10.5-inch model is its compact built which reduces the borders of the iPad by nearly 40% to fit into an incredibly small package that still weighs just a mere one pound. The iPad Pro will also come with new features thanks to iOS 11 this fall.
  • iPhone 5 and 5c Won't Run iOS 11, 32-Bit Apps Going Away - Some older iPhones will not be part of the iOS 11 party scheduled to arrive this fall. According to Apple's website, the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5c, and the fourth-generation iPad cannot handle iOS 11's 64-bit app requirements, so they will not be receiving the updated operating system. Devices that can run iOS 11 include the iPhone 5s and SE, 6 and 6 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus, and the 7 and 7 Plus. On the tablet front, iOS 11 is compatible with the iPad Mini 2, 3, and 4, the iPad Air and Air 2, the newer iPad, as well as the big and small iPad Pros. The older iPhones in question use 32-bit processors, while every iPhone and iPad released since 2013 uses 64-bit processors (with 32-bit backward compatibility built in.) One of the under-the-hood changes in iOS 11 is dropped support for 32-bit apps, moving all apps to 64-bits. Since the iPhone 5 and 5c can only run 32-bit apps, iOS 11 simply won't work as intended. Apple has been warning developers to update their apps with 64-bit compatibility for some time. Starting some point later this year, Apple will entirely drop 32-bit apps from the App Store. Such apps have likely not been updated by their developers in years. iOS 11 is available to developers in beta. The final version for consumers isn't expected to arrive until the fall.
  • Apple Announces iOS 11 with Person-to-Person Apple Pay - Apple has debuted iOS 11, its next-generation mobile operating system. Starting with messages, iOS 11 introduces improved discoverability for stickers and emoji. iOS 11 will automatically synchronize conversations across devices (iPhone, iPad, macOS), including deleted messages and threads. Apple says most iMessage content is stored in the cloud, which means it uses less storage on mobile devices
  • Apple Targets Augmented Reality - pple says iOS 11 will take advantage of machine learning to a much higher degree than before. The the company has new, specific APIs that developers can use in apps such as the camera for face tracking, face detection, landmarks, text, and so on. Apple says apps like photos and Siri also rely on machine learning to generate a lot of their results. Developers will be able to take advantage of the new machine learning tools via the APIs starting this week. Smarter apps will arrive when iOS 11 does later this year.
  • Samsung Makes Good On Promise to Sell Unlocked Galaxy S8 and S8+ - Samsung today made unlocked versions of its flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones available for sale. People interested in the unlocked phones can pick them up at select Best Buy retail stores, as well as BestBuy.com and Samsung.com. Samsung says the unlocked variants of the S8 and S8+ are compatible with most wireless networks around the world, including those operated by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless in the U.S. Samsung-branded apps and services are aboard the unlocked S8 and S8+, but carrier-branded bloatware is absent. Samsung's Bixby voice-based assistant is still not ready, though Samsung expects it to arrive in the next month or so. Best Buy and Samsung will permit phone trade-ins, as well as 24-month financing, to help defray the cost of the device. The Galaxy S8 costs $725 and the Galaxy S8+ costs $825. The unlocked phones are only available in midnight black.
  • Windows 10 Insider Preview build 16215 for PCs - Walkthrough Video - Earlier this week, Microsoft released the first new Windows 10 Insider Preview in three weeks. Build 16215 for PCs contains quite a few new features; in fact, it's enough to fill up nearly 20 minutes of a walkthrough video. Microsoft's Edge browser contains a few new improvements. You can once again pin websites to the taskbar, and you can use F11 to put the browser in fullscreen mode. Ebooks in the browser can now be highlighted as well, and you can even take notes. The Start Menu and the Action Center have been updated with acrylic, which is part of Microsoft's new Fluent Design System. The company also made improvements to the way that the Start Menu can be resized. There are also a bunch of improvements to the onscreen keyboard. Many of them have to do with handwriting, but Word Flow functionality has been added to a new one-handed keyboard as well.
  • Google Releases reCAPTCHA API to Improve Android Security - Google has announced a new tool developers can use to authenticate people securely while simultaneously improving the experience for mobile phone users. The company made available the new reCAPTCHA Android API as a part of Google Play Services. Google says this lets app developers and web sites better tell humans and bots apart from one another, particularly with respect to authentication. The API runs Google's new Invisible reCAPTCHA tech, which runs risk analysis behind the scenes to weed out bots and block spam and other abuses. The API is included with Google SafetyNet so mobile developers can manage both the device and user attestations from the same API. This eliminates risks, according to Google, and is more efficient across the board. For end users, the result will be a less intrusive experience when authenticating within apps and on the mobile web.
  • Password manager OneLogin suffers major hack - In a blog post published Tuesday, the single sign-on service wrote that it had detected unauthorized access to OneLogin data in its US data region. The company added it had since blocked the access, and had reached out to impacted customers, though it hasn't revealed how many were affected. In a later update, OneLogin revealed that the hacker "obtained access to a set of AWS (Amazon Web Services) keys and used them to access the AWS API from an intermediate host with another, smaller service provider in the US."  What's most worrying is that while the company says it encrypts "certain data at rest," it could not rule out the possibility that the hacker also obtained the ability to decrypt the data. OneLogin's website states that over 2000 global enterprise customers secure their applications with its software, including Conde Nast, ARM, The Carlyle Group, and Pinterest. It also integrates with apps and services such as Amazon Web Services, Office 365, LinkedIn, Slack, Twitter, and Google.
  • Man Fined $4,000 for "Liking" Controversial Posts on Facebook - Those of us in the States can "like" away, as a federal court in 2013 stated that a "like" on social media is protected speech under the First Amendment, but those in other countries are not so lucky and need to think twice before engaging in what should be a harmless gesture: $4,000 is what a Swiss man owes after giving the thumbs up to defamatory comments. The judge's argument was that this action was a clear endorsement of the content, and it made the comments "accessible to a large number of people," since Facebook showed them to all of his friends and followers
  • iPhone 7 Camera vs $100,000 Hollywood-Grade Camera - It's hard to imagine why any camera should cost nearly $100,000 when you can carry around a 4K camera in your pocket these days. This instinct, however, is wrong and this video makes it crystal clear as to why.
  • Dasung Showing New Paperlike Pro - Dasung introduced it's first E Ink monitor at CES 2015 and was met with complaints about bad drivers and faulty displays. They followed it up with a second model in a successful Indiegogo campaign in July 2016, raising over $190,000. A new model is available for pre-order dubbed the "Paperlike Pro" and appears to receive substantial improvements, including an HDMI port. It retains the Paperlike Second Generation's 13.3" screen, and max resolution of 1600x1200, and has no backlight, and can be run entirely off of a single USB connection.

(hx) 11:54 PM CEST - Jun,05 2017 - Post a comment
Chinese website KKJ has leaked an image from what appears to be an AMD press release in which the red team pitted its new RX Vega GPU against NVIDIA’s Titan XP, and the results are quite surprising. AMD benched DOOM in 4K on Ultra settings via its Vulkan API. And according to the graphs, the Radeon RX Vega GPU was 21% faster than NVIDIA’s Titan XP GPU. AMD has already stated that the Radeon RX Vega will be launched during SIGGRAPH, at the end of July.

AMD Radeon RX Vega to Launch at SIGGRAPH 2017 - tech
(hx) 11:17 PM CEST - May,31 2017 - Post a comment
AMD at its Computex 2017 event announced that you may have to wait a lot longer for the consumer graphics variant of its "Vega" architecture. The Radeon RX Vega, the consumer graphics product based on the architecture, will launch at SIGGRAPH 2017, that's 30th July thru 3rd August. The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, on the other hand, will launch by late-June, 2017. This card has a full-featured "Vega 10" silicon, and will be overpriced. We're not exactly sure who its target audience is, but it could mostly be enthusiasts wanting to try out "Vega" or for software/game-developers to begin optimizing their games for "Vega."

(hx) 12:59 AM CEST - May,31 2017 - Post a comment
  • AVG ransomware decryption tools - AVG provides decryption tools for a variety of ransomware (Apocalypse, BadBlock, Bart, Crypt888, Legion, SZFLocker, TeslaCrypt), while also offering lots of resources and guides to walk you through a typical ransomware attack (depending on the type of ransomware, of course)
  • Avast anti-ransomware tools - Avast provides 16, which are listed here. All of Avast's decryptors are free and check for viruses at the same time.
  • BitDefender Anti-ransomware Tool - BitDefender's tool is intended to act as a protection against being infected by CTB-Locker, Locky, Petya, and TeslaCrypt ransomware. The company doesn't explain how the program works but once loaded it should detect an infection as it commences, stopping it before any files are encrypted. The splash screen is clean and basic in feel, featuring a section that stops executables from running from certain locations and an option to turn on protection from boot. The company emphasises that the program is not intended as a replacement for antivirus but should be used in conjunction with it.
  • GandCrab decryption tool - A new family of ransomware dubbed GandCrab has been making its rounds since January this year. Spreading via malicious advertisements leading to Rig Exploit Kit landing pages or via crafted e-mail messages impersonating recepits, GandCrab has managed to infect around 50K computers. In order to get the decryptor, the GandCrab operators ask for a ransom of anywhere between hundreds and hundred thousand dollars in DASH a crypto-currency that just made its debut in cybercrime.
  • Crysis Family Ransomware Decryptor - The tool has been updated with master decryption keys recently released via a forum at BleepingComputer.com mirroring the same key release scenario seen in November 2016 for older variants of this malware. With the current update, ESET's decrypting tool can help victims of six unique variants of this specific ransomware family. Each of them is identifiable by the use of a specific extension: .xtbl, .crysis, .crypt, .lock, .crypted, and .dharma.
  • Emsisoft Decrypters - Free decrypter tools to recover your files without paying the ransom
  • EternalBlue Vulnerability Checker - EternalBlue Vulnerability Checker, inspects whether Windows is patched against the EternalBlue exploit, which was behind in the recent WannaCry ransomware epidemic and is still being used to spread cryptocurrency mining software and other malware. ESET’s network detection of the EternalBlue exploit (CVE-2017-0144) was added on April 25, prior to the outbreak of the WannaCry threat. The second tool released by ESET is a ransomware decryptor; it helps victims of a Crysis ransomware variant that uses an extension to add the encrypted files .wallet and .onion. The keys were published on May 18 by BleepingComputer.com forums.
  • Kaspersky anti-ransomware tool - Kaspersky's tool is designed for small to medium sized businesses and like Bitdefender, it comes with a tool to prevent ransomware attacks before they demobilise your systems. Kaspersky's anti-ransomware tool will run along in the background and monitor network activity for anything that matches known ransomware behaviour or patterns.

(hx) 01:44 AM CEST - May,28 2017 - Post a comment
  • WD Adds Helium-Filled 10 TB NAS HDDs to Red Lineup -Western Digital is refreshing its Red and Purple lineups with more advanced drives offering 10 TB capacity and using seven 1.42 TB platters. The new WD Red and WD Red Pro with 10 TB capacity are based on revamped 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM HelioSeal platforms that can support a higher number of platters. The drives also feature increased areal density and 256 MB of cache, enabling ~17% higher sequential read/write performance compared to its predecessors, as well as a lower power consumption compared to previous-gen helium WD Red hard drives. Other than that, Western Digital does not really disclose the feature set of its platform for helium-filled HDDs for NAS applications. No release date is listed, but Newegg suggests 5/30 for the Red ($399) and 6/17 for the Red Pro ($459).
  • Nvidia Titan Xp 12GB Review - Like the Titan X before it, Titan Xp sports GP102's complete back-end. All 12 of its 32-bit memory controllers are active, each bound to eight ROPs and 256KB of L2 cache. That adds up to 96 ROPs, 3MB of shared L2, and 12GB of GDDR5X. The resulting configuration is definitely faster than Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Titan X, though the advantage you enjoy depends on what you're playing and how it utilizes Nvidia’s GPU. Through our 10-game test suite, run at the highest detail settings available, Titan Xp averages 8%-higher frame rates than Titan X at 2560x1440 and a 9.5% improvement over its predecessor at 3840x2160.
  • Asus ROG teaser video shows the first Ryzen-powered laptop - Asus has teased the first Ryzen notebook on its Republic of Gamers YouTube page. Other than Ryzen's circular orange logo and the ROG brand, the video doesn't offer any specifics of what hardware the machine will feature. The clip includes the words 'something has awakened,' and, most importantly, the description under the video includes the hashtag #Computex2017. The Taipei event kicks off on May 30, so it's not long before Asus shows the laptop off to the world.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 Most Fragile Phone Ever Made - The Galaxy S8 is expected to be a huge hit for the smartphone repair industry, as the design of its Infinity Display and glass back has made it incredibly delicate. Tests show that the phone can easily crack when dropped on any side, and what makes it even better for repair shops is that the prices of wholesale replacement screens are significantly cheaper compared to last generation's displays. I wish there was a design flaw that would force Samsung to go back to flat screens.
  • Microsoft Researches Holographic Near-Eye Displays - Microsoft Research has unveiled new technology designed to bring a comfortable, eyeglasses style form factor to virtual reality and augmented reality. They have demonstrated how they can create holographic imaging with a device in the form factor of sunglasses by using a powerful wave-front correction ability. The mixed reality sunglasses have a wide 80 degree horizontal field of view. The glasses use a thin and transparent holographic optical element as a combiner that has been cut into the shape of an eyeglass lens. This allows the device to have optical see-through capability that can resolve pixel scale details over the whole field of view. The technology is so advanced that they can even correct astigmatism and other defects that a user may have, thus the person can set aside their prescription glasses while using the device. Wow. I want this!!!
  • Scientists create world's thinnest hologram - A group of Australian and Chinese scientists working at Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) has developed what it claims is the "world's thinnest hologram" – almost one thousand times thinner than a human hair.'Min Gu led the study, which created a 'nano-hologram' measuring just 25 nanometers thick. Human hair, by comparison, has a thickness of around 1000 nanometers. The system, which doesn't require 3D glasses, uses a thin film of "topological insulator material" called antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) that's simple to manufacture and reduces the size of holograms. The next step in the process is to develop a rigid film that can be laid over an LCD screen to create the 3D holographic display. This will require the hologram to become ten times smaller than it already is, but could result in the sort of holographic-capable smartphones, TVs, and wearables that were once only seen in sci-fi.

Originally, Microsoft had said that 10 S would run anything from the Windows Store. Now that it has announced that Ubuntu, Fedora, and SUSE will be offered in the Store, Redmond felt that some clarification on its previous statement was necessary. According to a post on the Microsoft Developer Blog, Linux distros will not run on Win 10 S.
  • SSD Drives Vulnerable to Attacks That Corrupt User Data - New research describes two vulnerabilities that can affect SSD drives utilizing MLC technology: "program interference" and "read disturb." In the first, an attacker can corrupt data or reduce the lifespan of a drive by writing data with a certain pattern: specifically, the data pattern makes an MLC's programming logic cause 4.9 more errors than usual. For the second type of attack, exploit code can force an SSD to perform a large number of writes in a short period of time, which also results in data corruption and degradation of the drive's storage abilities. I'm going to assume these attacks are more complicated than described, since SSDs can stand up pretty well even when atypical amounts of data are being written.
  • NTFS Bug Allows Malicious Websites to Bluescreen Win7 /Win8.1 - Russian site habrahabr.ru has a story up regarding how a new bug found in NTFS allows malformed filenames to bluescreen Windows 7 and 8.1 boxes. (Those of us not of unusual linguistic inclination can access an English version courtesy of Google Translate.) Apparently this issue is made worse by the fact that malicious websites can embed images using this malformed filename format, causing browsers to save it in their image cache and crash.
  • WannaCry decryption tools released - Adrien Guinet, a security researcher for Quarkslab, has been able to make use of a flaw in the way WannaCry operates, thus allowing him to create a decryptor. In essence, the ransomware generates a pair of keys on the victim's computer - a public and private key for encryption / decryption - which rely on prime numbers. Although WannaCry erases the keys from the system, thus forcing the victim to pay $300 to the cybercriminals, there's a catch. Guinet says that the malware "does not erase the prime numbers from memory before freeing the associated memory." Using this information, Guinet created WannaKey, which attempts to retrieve the prime numbers.
  • Samsung Investigates Reported Iris Scanner Hack - A German hacking group recently claimed that it has managed to bypass the iris recognition system of the new flagship Galaxy S8 device and Samsung isn’t too happy about it. The Galaxy S8 was a huge comeback for the world’s largest smartphone maker after recoiling from last year’s devastating recall of the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7s, which resulted in the firm’s reputation taking a pretty serious hit. Chaos Computer Club (CCC), a German hacking group that was founded in 1981, published a video showing the Galaxy S8 being unlocked through the use of a printed photo of the owner’s eye covered with a contact lens, capable of replicating the curvature of a real eyeball.
  • T-Mobile DIGITS Brings Multi-Device Freedom May 31 - T-Mobile said its Digits service will go live May 31. Digits allows customers to use the same phone number across multiple devices, or multiple numbers on a single device. The service operates over LTE and works with most connected devices, including phones, tablets, wearables, and computers. Digits relies on an app for Android and iOS devices, though T-Mobile says Digits is also built into the native dialer on certain Samsung phones (Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge +, S7, S7 edge, S8, S8+, Note 5) and the LG G5. T-Mobile customers sign in on whichever device is most convenient in order to access to their phone number, voicemail, text messages, and call history. The service allows a single smartphone to support up to five phone numbers without requiring additional SIM cards
  • HTC announces its squeezable U11 flagship phone -  HTC has officially announced its new flagship smartphone, the HTC U11. The successor to last year's HTC 10 features a 5.5-inch, Quad HD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, and new glass and metal design. But its marquee feature is something the company calls Edge Sense, which enables a new way to interact with your phone by letting you squeeze the sides of the device to perform different functions. The feature uses sensors built into the sides of the phone, just below the volume and power keys, to detect pressure as the user squeezes the phone. The phone doesn't actually squeeze of course, but you'll see an on screen cue as visual feedback that you're activating the feature. Users can configure all kinds of actions - launching an app or a function within an app - triggered by either short or long squeezes.
  • Facebook Adds Social Functions to Live Video  - Facebook has announced two new features for live video that should make it more interactive and social. First, there's Live Chat With Friends. This allows people to invite their friends to a private chat thread that accompanies a public live broadcast. For example, users can begin watching a live video from their favorite artist and invite their Facebook buddies to talk about it in real time. Facebook says people will be able to follow public conversations as well as private chats during live video at the same time, and private chats will continue after the live broadcast ends. The feature is being tested in several countries right now and should become more widely available over the summer months. The second new feature is called Live With. This feature lets people broadcast live video with a guest. "To invite a friend to join you in your live video, simply select a guest from the Live Viewers section, or tap a comment from the viewer you want to invite," explained Facebook in a blog post. "Your viewer can then choose whether or not to join your broadcast. You can go live with a guest in both portrait mode and landscape mode." Facebook thinks this will be a great way for high-profile users (read: celebrities) to interact with regular people and fans. The Live With feature is now available to all users, profiles, and pages.
  • Instagram, Snapchat Ranked Worst Apps for Children's Mental Health - RSPH and the Young Health Movement (YHM) have published a new report, #StatusOfMind, examining the positive and negative effects of social media on young people's health, including a league table of social media platforms according to their impact on young people's mental health. YouTube tops the table as the most positive, with Instagram and Snapchat coming out as the most detrimental to young people's mental health and wellbeing. RSPH and YHM are now calling for action from government and social media companies to help promote the positive aspects of social media for young people, whilst mitigating the potential negatives.
  • Audi and Volvo to Adopt Android Auto - Google today said carmakers Audi and Volvo plan to build Android Auto into their next generation of cars. The companies already offer limited support for the platform in select cars. Moving forward, all their vehicles will include Android Auto. "That means your [future Audi or Volvo's] built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help — even when you leave your phone behind," said Google. Android Auto, Google's in-dash navigation, communications, and entertainment software, is already available to some 300 car models worldwide in addition to after-market stereo systems. Other auto brands that support Android Auto include Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Subaru. Android Auto is also available from the Google Play Store as a stand-alone app.
  • Star Trek Discovery First Look Trailer - Before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise there was Discovery. Now, one of the most iconic and influential global franchises returns to television with Star Trek: Discovery. The CBS All Access Original Series arrives this Fall.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she's thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women's wrestling. At the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling super stardom. GLOW is executive produced by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie), Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie), Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black, Weeds) and Tara Herrmann (Orange is the New Black).

Intel 10-Core Skylake-X Core i9 7900X: 4GHz - tech
(hx) 11:04 PM CEST - May,25 2017 - Post a comment / read (7)
Details gleaned from SiSoftware Sandra suggest that the 10-core Skylake-X will run at significantly higher speeds (4GHz base, 4.5 GHz Turbo Boost) than what was theorized by previous reports (3.30GHz base, 4.30GHz Turbo Boost). Other specs include 14,080KB (13.75 MB) of shared L3 cache, 1MB L2 cache per core (for a total of 10MB), as well as a 175W TDP. Word is: "While initial reports pegged this CPU at as running at clock speeds of 3.30 GHz base and with 4.30 GHz Turbo Boost, it would seem Intel's release silicon will leverage much higher stock speeds, with the reported values on this SiSoft report being a staggering 4.0 GHz base, and 4.5 GHz Turbo Boost. These are extremely high clock speeds for a ten-core part, but all the other details about the Core i9 7900X check out: there are 14,080 KB (13.75 MB) of shared L3 cache, 1 MB L2 cache per core (for a total of 10 MB), as well as a 175 W TDP."

Subtitles Open You Up to Hackers - tech
(hx) 03:30 PM CEST - May,24 2017 - Post a comment
On Tuesday, security research firm Checkpoint announced that its team had discovered a new vulnerability in numerous media players that allows a hacker to take full control of any device when a malicious subtitle file is used. The firm estimates 200 million people are potentially at risk. To be clear, if you're using a media player to watch a legitimate copy of a film that already has subtitles, you're probably just fine. But if for any reason you visited one of the numerous websites that allow you to download subtitles for movies in various languages, you could be at risk. People download these files for many reasons, not just for the purposes of piracy. There's a thriving community of people that translate film dialogue for the good of everyone but, unfortunately, there could be some bad actors out there.
Our research reveals a new possible attack vector, using a completely overlooked technique in which the cyberattack is delivered when movie subtitles are loaded by the user's media player. These subtitles repositories are, in practice, treated as a trusted source by the user or media player; our research also reveals that those repositories can be manipulated and be made to award the attacker's malicious subtitles a high score, which results in those specific subtitles being served to the user. This method requires little or no deliberate action on the part of the user, making it all the more dangerous.

Unlike traditional attack vectors, which security firms and users are widely aware of, movie subtitles are perceived as nothing more than benign text files.
Here are the media players that are affected and how to update them: PopcornTime, Kodi, VLC, Stremio.

Microsoft Researches Holographic Near-Eye Displays - tech
(hx) 12:56 AM CEST - May,21 2017 - Post a comment
Microsoft Research has unveiled new technology designed to bring a comfortable, eyeglasses style form factor to virtual reality and augmented reality. The holographic display even has the ability to provide per-pixel focus control. I found this look into the Microsoft Research labs interesting as it shows some of the new technology that may find its way into our homes, work, health, and transportation. Even though current state of the device has the driving electronics external and the glasses are monoscopic, more research is being performed to build a practical stereo display. Even with that disclaimer, I'm still excited about how fast this technology is evolving. Who wouldn't want to wear a pair of glasses instead of the bulky headsets of today!
