Final Fantasy XV Is More Immersive on PC - tech
(hx) 07:46 PM CEST - Aug,25 2017 - Post a comment
Today Nvidia released a video about Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, starring Director Hajime Tabata as he talks about the PC port. Tabata-san talks on how the Nvidia GameWorks team supported development, and about the technology that has been incorporated into the game to make it “the best it can be.” According to him, this is a very important moment for the history of the franchise. He also explains that the real selling point of Final Fantasy XV is its beautiful world, and the sense of immersion in that world. The quality of the visuals and environments directly influences that, and the team wanted to achieve such quality of graphics that would make even those who previously played on console want to come back and play again. Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition will release on PC via Steam in early 2018.

AMD RX Vega Card Shortages Will Persist - tech
(hx) 05:26 PM CEST - Aug,25 2017 - Post a comment
We all know that there has been greater demand for AMD RX Vega 64 than there has been supply for. There is not arguing that. Speculating on why can lead you in a few different directions. However, Digitimes is reporting that the supply issue is due to low packaging yield rates, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Some sources pointed out that Vega's design of integrating high bandwidth memory (HBM) into the GPU has significantly raised the difficulty of the related packaging process and hence resulted in low yield rates. However, some other sources claimed that the issue may be down to problems with Advanced Semiconductor Engineering's (ASE) packaging technology.

  • AMD Responds to Radeon RX Vega Pricing Outrage - Some had claimed that AMD would be dropping its standalone air-cooled Radeon RX Vega 64 $499 SKU in a bait-and-switch scheme, but an official statement by the company suggests otherwise: demand of the card is merely exceeding expectations, and AMD is working hard to restock both standalone versions and Gamer Packs. Radeon RX Vega 64 demand continues to exceed expectations. AMD is working closely with its partners to address this demand. Our initial launch quantities included standalone Radeon RX Vega 64 at SEP of $499, Radeon RX Vega 64 Black Packs at SEP of $599, and Radeon RX Vega 64 Aqua Packs at SEP of $699. We are working with our partners to restock all SKUs of Radeon RX Vega 64 including the standalone cards and Gamer Packs over the next few weeks, and you should expect quantities of Vega to start arriving in the coming days.
  • The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 & RX Vega 56 Review: Vega Burning Bright - So how does AMD fare? The answer to that is ultimately going to hinge on your opinion on power efficiency. But before we get too far, let’s start with the Radeon RX Vega 64, AMD’s flagship card. Previously we’ve been told that it would trade blows with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080, and indeed it does just that. At 3840x2160, the Vega 64 is on average neck-and-neck with the GeForce GTX 1080 in gaming performance, with the two cards routinely trading the lead, and AMD holding it more often. Of course the “anything but identical” principle applies here, as while the cards are equal on average, they can sometimes be quite far apart on individual games.
  • Intel Atom C3000 Product Briefing - Intel has spilled the beans on its latest Atom processor: the C3000 is the company's third generation system-on-a-chip based CPU manufactured on their optimized 14nm process technology. Unlike their older brethren, these Atoms will primarily live in network and enterprise storage products instead of home devices (e.g., Ultrabooks and tablets).
  • Acer launches new Chromebook - Opening up the Chromebook 11 C771 reveals an 11.6 inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1366x768 that optionally comes as a touch screen (C771T). Although not pictured, the hinges allow a full 180 degrees of range so that touch screen users can enjoy a flat surface to work on. A fairly simple 720p webcam with built in microphone is centered above the screen. Inside the C771, a 6th Generation Intel Celeron 3855U comes standard, although Core i3 and Core i5 models will also be available. A 32GB eMMC module can be found for storage alongside 4GB of RAM.
  • The Ultimate Ryzen Hackintosh - AMD Ryzen PowerMac G5 Hackintosh Build (2017) vs a REAL Mac - PowerMac G5 case mod and PC build! This water cooled Ryzen 1700 Hackintosh is so epic. How do you build an AMD Hackintosh? This custom G5 case and Hackintosh beats a Mac Pro. This gaming and editing PC Hackintosh is packing some serious specifications.
  • Microsoft unveils Windows 10 Pro for Workstations - Windows 10 Pro for Workstations has a focus on high-end hardware, which means support for server grade Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors. Unlike the current Windows 10 Pro, which only supports up to two physical CPUs and 2TB of RAM, this newest version can handle up to four physical CPUs and up to 6TB of memory.
  • iOS 11 Lets Users Temporarily Disable Touch ID - A new setting discovered in iOS allows iPhone owners to quickly and temporarily disable Touch ID. Pressing the power button rapidly five times activates SOS Emergency mode. The purpose of this mode is to let people bypass the lock tools to make an emergency phone call. A byproduct of entering SOS Emergency mode is disabling Touch ID. The only way to unlock the phone once Touch ID has been disabled is via the PIN or password. Because users are able to do this quickly and discreetly, it could be useful to help safeguard the iPhone in a situation when the owner might be compelled to provide their fingerprint. The feature was first spotted on Twitter and later verified by The Verge. iOS 11 is still in beta testing. It should be rolled out the general public next month.
  • Bitcoin Is Forking. Again. - There's a third group of bitcoin developers, companies, and users who advocate for a "best of both worlds approach." This group includes Bitmain, the largest bitcoin infrastructure company in the world, and legendary bitcoin developer Jeff Garzik. They got together back in May and signed what is known as the "New York Agreement," which bound them to implement a two megabyte block size increase alongside segregated witness via a hard fork within six months of the time of signing. They call the fork Segwit2x.
  • China cracks down on VPN vendors, targets Alibaba and other - Chinese authorities have issued a warning to five of the country's well-known e-commerce platforms, over the sale of illegal virtual private networks (VPNs); that allows users to evade state censorship controls. Online retailers named in the notice include Alibaba, social shopping network Mogujie, and entertainment platforms Xiami and Peiyinxiu. This step is the latest in a chain of measures the Chinese authorities have taken in order to maintain more control over online content. A little over a month ago, China blocked VPN access for individuals, instructing companies to register with the government. Later on, complying with this mandate, Apple removed all major VPN apps from the Chinese App Store.
  • Google Drops August Security Patches for Android - Google has made its monthly security patches available to select Android devices. This month's patches plug a significant number of security holes that threaten most Android devices. Google found dozens of vulnerabilities, including a number of which classified as critical, or able to remotely execute code. Some of problems are related to specific hardware and the associated software drivers that control them. Google is pushing two separate patches to cover these vulnerabilities, one dated August 1 and the second dated August 5. As always, Google is delivering the patches directly to its own Nexus- and Pixel-branded devices first. Google has already posted factory images for download from its web site. Google's handsets will receive both patches in a single download. As far as Google is aware, none of these security holes have been exploited by hackers or other entities. Google has already given the patches to its device-maker partners. Phone manufacturers are responsible for updating their own smartphones with the patches.
  • Bionik Labs' ARKE Exoskeleton with Amazon Echo Integration - The ARKE is a prototype exoskeleton from Bionik Labs intended for paraplegic people and others with mobility problems. • Facebook Intros A Dedicated Video Platform Called 'Watch' - Facebook hopes its new platform will entice people to consume more video content through Facebook. Facebook Watch is a place for episodic shows that will be available on mobile, on PCs, and in Facebook's TV apps. Facebook says the service is personalized to help people find new content, sometimes based on what users' friends and communities watch. People will be able to leave comments on shows in order to connect with friends and others. Shows may offer dedicated Facebook Groups for more in-depth discussions. Facebook says Watch is a platform for creators and publishers seeking to find dedicated audiences, similar to the way YouTube stars have created their own niches. The company has high hopes that creators will put together daily episodes, live shows/events, and even shows that follow a narrative arc. The company has funded a small collection of original programming in order to get Watch on its feet. Facebook will be testing Watch with a limited number of people in the U.S. first. The social network expects to roll it out to wider audiences over time.
  • Samsung Makes Its Internet Browser Available to Most Android Phones - Samsung has made a version of its mobile browser available to non-Samsung handsets. The company has been beta testing Samsung Internet Browser on Nexus and Pixel phones since April. The latest build, v6 Beta, is compatible with all Android devices running version 5.0 Lollipop and up. Samsung says its browser can sync bookmarks with Chrome on desktop machines, or other machines via the Samsung Cloud. The Samsung browser also includes content blockers, high-contrast mode, CSS Grid (for control over certain layouts), and the latest Chromium engine. Advanced users might take advantage of several beta features, including WebVR, web-based Bluetooth, WebGL 2, and Gamepad extensions. The Samsung Internet Browser Beta can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store.
  • Google Home Owners Can Now Make Free Calls - Google today enabled free voice calls from its Google Home speaker. Google Home is powered by the Google Assistant. Google says Home owners in the U.S. and Canada can initiate free voice calls to anyone in their contacts, as well as any business, by simply asking Google Home to make the call. The calls are completed over the Home's WiFi connection. For now, those who receive a call made via Google Home will see "unknown" or "no caller ID" when it rings their number, though Google hopes to let people display their mobile device number in Home calls by the end of the year. People who subscribe to Google Voice or Project Fi can use their Google number with Home right away.
  • HMD Global Intros Nokia 8 Flagship Smartphone - HMD Global, the sole licensee of the Nokia brand, today announced the Nokia 8 flagship Android smartphone. The handset is milled from 6000 series aluminum and polished to a high-gloss finish in black, blue, silver, and copper. The Nokia 8 boasts a 5.3-inch quad HD screen with curved Gorilla Glass 5, and it is powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor with 4 or 6 GB of RAM, and 64 or 128 GB of storage (depending on color selection.) All versions support microSD memory cards up to 128 GB. Like many modern flagships, the Nokia 8 adopts a dual-camera configuration with two 13-megapixel cameras on the rear with LED flash. The flagship module is an active depth-sensing camera that uses an infrared projector and camera to create a 3D map of its environment, much like LIDAR.
  • Cruise Anywhere App - It's pretty amazing how fast driver-less car technology is accelerating (no pun intended). It's not something I'm personally interested in, as I am a driving enthusiast, I'm starting to see the potential in cities more and more. Cruise uses the GM Bolt EV as its self-driving car of choice and expects to add another 100 vehicles to the fleet in the next few months. That should open up the app to more employees, though it may be over a year before the company is ready to open it up to everyday users.
  • Video Stabilization Algorithm Goofs Up - Video stabilization software is really cool, but it's not perfect (yet). Case in point: this car's jello-like windshield.
  • Army Discovery May Offer New Energy Source - Army scientists at Aberdeen Proving Ground have made a discovery in the form of an aluminum nanomaterial that can separate the hydrogen and oxygen in water, or any liquid containing water without the need for a catalyst. Dr. Anit Giri said "Also, it is very fast. For example, we have calculated that one kilogram of aluminum powder can produce 220 kilowatts of energy in just three minutes."
  • In The Event Of A Nuclear Blast, Don't Condition Your Hair - If, for some reason, you find yourself in a situation where you need to wash radioactive material from your body, don't reach for the bottle of hair conditioner. Conditioner can bind radioactive particles to your hair. That warning was part of guidelines issued last Friday by Guam's Office of Civil Defense, following threats from North Korea that it was preparing to test a missile that would create an "enveloping fire" around the U.S. territory. On Tuesday, North Korean state media reported it would not carry out the test after all. Still, the guidelines, which also include information on how to take cover before an explosion, are correct. They're the same guidelines posted on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's website, Ready.gov. The reason conditioner can be dangerous has to do with the physical characteristics of human hair, the chemistry of hair conditioner and properties of nuclear fallout.
  • Peter Dinklage's "Rememory" Will Be Free on Google Play  - In a rare move, Google Play Movies & TV is debuting a new, full-length film before it hits theaters -- and not only that, it'll be offered for free: you may visit the store between August 24th to September 20th for a copy of sci-fi thriller "Rememory," which stars Peter Dinklage as some guy who is involved with a memory recorder/playback machine. The film tells the story of visionary scientific pioneer (Martin Donovan) and his invention that can record and play people's memories. He's found dead soon after its unveiling, causing his widow (Julia Ormond) to isolate herself from the outside world until a mysterious character (Peter Dinklage) appears to help solve the mystery. It's currently got a rating of 8.6 on IMDB, so could be worth seeing.

Intel Reveals Post-8th Generation Core Architecture - tech
(hx) 11:11 PM CEST - Aug,17 2017 - Post a comment
In an unusual move for Intel, the chip giant has ever so slightly taken the wraps off of one of their future generation Core architectures. Basic information on the Ice Lake architecture has been published over on Intel's codename decoder, officially confirming for the first time the existence of the architecture and that it will be made on Intel's 10nm+ process.

Ice Lake will be Intel's next-gen 10nm CPUs, compared to the current-gen Kaby Lake processors on the second-gen 14nm (14nm+) process. The new Coffee Lake architecture will be Intel's 8th generation Core processors, and will see the company plonk down the new Core processors onto their first-gen 10nm process. The surprise knee jerk reaction to AMD's continued threat on the CPU market with Ryzen, Ryzen Threadripper and EPYC has Intel scurrying around to catch up. This is yet another move to confuse consumers, as Intel announced Ice Lake as a "successor to the 8th generation Intel Core processor family". As The Verge points out, this would imply that Ice Lake is a semi-9th generation CPU architecture that will succeed, in some ways, the 8th generation CPUs. Intel will be tapping its 10nm+ process, the second generation of the tech at that small scale. As The Verge points out again, this is confusing as it seems there should be another first-gen 10nm release in between. Ice Lake won't appear until sometime in 2019, but it will surely be an interesting ride between now and then to see how much AMD can make Intel squirm in that time.

Nvidia GeForce 385.28 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 12:15 AM CEST - Aug,15 2017 - Post a comment
The GeForce website now offers new GeForce game-ready 385.28 WHQL drivers, saying these are the drivers for tomorrow's release of Agents of Mayhem, offering an NVIDIA Tech in Agents of Mayhem trailer. On the VR front, these drivers have also been optimized for Killing Floor: Incursion. Beyond those two games, Nvidia's latest drivers introduced a handful of bug fixes. They include the following:

- [GeForce GTX 1070][Doom]: The GPU clocks remain running at high performance speeds after exiting from the game.
- [GeForce Experience]: "Any file is missing" error message appears when installing new drivers updated from GFE.
- [Call of Duty Infinite Warfare]: Performance drop occurs with updated driver.
- [SLI][Intel X299]: Low GPU usage resulting in poor performance occurs with the X299.
- [GeForce MX150][Xiaomi TM1604 notebook]: There is no driver support for this product.

This is a pretty minor release overall. Unless you plan on playing either Agents of Mayhem or Killing Floor: Incursion, or are affected by any of the above issues, you may want to hold off on updating to make sure they don't introduce any unwanted side effects.

Intel Will Reveal 8th Generation CPUs This Month - tech
(hx) 09:45 PM CEST - Aug,13 2017 - Post a comment
Intel's 7th-generation CPUs (Kaby Lake) released in January this year, about 17 months after the preceding generation (Skylake)--a usual transition in the CPU market. However, Intel is ready to reveal its 8th-generation on August 21. And while we don't know of the release window quite yet, this announcement comes much sooner than what we'd expect. The Kaby Lake processor family was announced this time last year and released five months later. If this next generation (Coffee Lake) follows suit, we could have new Intel chips in early 2018. This also means that Kaby Lake would be supplanted just 12 months after its launch; Intel CPU generations typically run an 18-month cycle. There's reason to believe that the recent competition from AMD's Ryzen CPU family--which began its roll out in March this year-- is impacting what we see from Intel. AMD has been able to offer comparable gaming performance, more CPU cores for better multitasking and productivity, and competitive pricing.

AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is slower than the Intel Core i9 7900X - tech
(hx) 03:24 PM CEST - Aug,11 2017 - Post a comment
The first third-party gaming benchmarks for AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 1950X CPU have been unveiled and the results are quite disappointing. Naturally, we don’t really suggest this CPU for gaming enthusiasts, however AMD’s latest offer is significantly slower in video-games than its Intel’s competitor. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper is a beast featuring 16 cores and supports 32 threads. Its primary competitor – at least for now – is Intel’s Core i9 7900X; a CPU that packs 10 cores and supports 20 threads. And from the looks of it, Intel’s offering is better suited for gamers than AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper. GamersNexus and Sweclockers have shared the first gaming benchmarks between these two CPUs and as we can see, Intel’s CPU offers better performance in every game. Both the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and the Intel Core i9 7900X are priced at $999. And while the AMD Ryzen Threadripper is coming with more cores, it’s pretty obvious that no game really benefits from these additional CPU cores.

Ryzen 5 1600/ 1600X vs Core i5 7600K Review - tech
(hx) 12:05 AM CEST - Aug,08 2017 - Post a comment
Ryzen brings out the big guns for its mainstream CPUs - six cores, 12 threads. Up against that, the Core i5 holds up well - but given the choice, it's the AMD Ryzen 5 we'd prefer. And we'll take the cheaper non-X 1600 with the bundled cooler, please.

It's amazing how quickly technology has changed basic aspects of everyday life, isn't it? I can remember using a typewriter in my elementary school (I did labels for my cassete tapes on it). Watching one of the 4 or so channels that existed! Looking at the TV guide in a newspaper I subscribed to! Having to spin a dial to make a phone call, attached by a cable to the device I was using! Looking things up in an encyclopedia set! Going to the library to borrow a physical copy of a book! Watching commercials on TV! I love it. Great changes. Oh, to be young again!! :-D Reminds me that I need new PC, new smartphone and new car..anyone wants buy me a Tesla car? :-D..Technology cannot be stopped! :-)
  • Intel's Coffee Lake Core i7 & i5 CPUs will require new mobos - And it appears that Intel has dropped the ball. A couple of days ago, we informed you about the full specs of the new upcoming Intel Coffee Lake i7 & i5 CPUs. These new processors will be using the LGA1151 socket, however it appears that they won't be compatible with the LGA1151 motherboards that are currently available. This information comes straight from ASRock. When a user asked whether these new CPUs will be compatible with ASRock's LGA1151 motherboards, ASRock replied and confirmed that the Coffee Lake CPUs will require new motherboards. What's interesting here is that ASRock has deleted this post. Perhaps the company leaked something that Intel was not ready to reveal yet?
  • MSI Shows Us How To Install an AMD Threadripper CPU - In this demonstration, we'll show you how to install AMD X399 CPU on MSI X399 series motherboard.
  • IBM and Sony have created a tiny cartridge that can store 330TB - IBM Research, in collaboration with Sony Storage Media Solutions, has announced that the two companies have created a tiny prototype storage cartridge that can store up to 330 terabytes of uncompressed data and still fit into the palm of your hand. The cartridge, called a sputtered magnetic tape, has an areal density of 201 gigabits per square inch, which is a world record and more than 20 times the density of commercial tape drives.
  • USB 3.2 Spec Promises to Double Data Transfer Speeds - The USB 3.0 Promoter Group this week released the spec for USB 3.2, which has the potential to boost speeds through cables. Specifically, USB 3.2 takes advantage of the multi-lane operation that has been built into existing USB Type-C cables. Now, as long as both devices support USB 3.2, end users should see data transfer speeds double. The Promoter Group says the spec allows for up to two lanes of 5 Gbps or two lanes of 10 Gbps operation. The spec makes use of the existing SuperSpeed USB physical layer, but makes minor updates to the hub specification to address increased speeds in addition to transitions between single- and two-lane operation. The USB 3.2 specification is available to developers only at this time. The USB 3.0 Promoter Group expects to release the final version of the spec in September. Devices with support for USB 3.2 will likely not appear in the market before 2018. It's unclear if or how USB 3.2 might be used with mobile devices. Some of the companies in the USB 3.0 Promoter Group include Apple, HP, Intel, Microsoft, ST Microelectronics, and Texas Instruments.
  • Apple could replace your old MacBook with a new model - If you're aware of the AppleCare+ service offered by Apple, you'll know that once your MacBook starts losing its ability to hold a charge, the battery is then replaced by the company. Users not covered by this policy are charged a one-off service fee of $199. However, due to reported battery supply problems experienced by the company, several owners of specific MacBook devices could receive a full replacement of the laptop when submitting a service request. Apple notified its Genius Bar employees and global suppliers that the company has been experiencing a supply issue pertaining to the battery in certain MacBooks, specifically the Early-2012 and Mid-2013 models; and according to a directive obtained by MacRumors, the company has requested that the devices are replaced with similar products. Customers have noticed that instead of receiving a replacement battery, they were offered a refurbished model, and in some cases a brand new 2016 or 2017 MacBook.
  • SteelSeries Unveils World's First True 1-To-1 Tracking Mice - SteelSeries has redesigned its Sensei and Rival gaming mice with an exclusive new optical sensor, the TrueMove 3, which they claim is the first to offer "true 1-to-1 tracking," up to 3500 CPI (counts per inch, or the number of pixels your mouse moves in a single inch). From 3,500 to 12,000 CPI, the sensor uses a new and advanced jitter reduction technology, while its SROM reduces response time and increases accuracy.
  • Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Creators Update Available For Everyone - Microsoft introduced several new features and improvements to Windows 10 with the Creators Update. One that will especially resonate with consumers is better privacy controls and transparency as to what the settings actually do, as opposed to vague descriptions. It also introduced a new 3D Paint application and brought with it several goodies for gamers, such as a new Game Mode, native game broadcasting support, and a new Game Bar for quick access to certain settings. The Creators Update is the first of two major upgrades to Windows 10 scheduled for this year. The second one will be the Fall Creators Update. It will bring with it a somewhat refreshed look (fluent design) and several new features of its own, such as the ability to link your Android or iPhone device to your PC. It will also be tuned for a new generation of lower cost VR headsets from the likes of Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. As for the Creators Update that is now widely available, you can go to Settings > Update & security to check for and grab any available updates. Otherwise you can go the manual route by heading here and clicking the "Update now" button.
  • Adobe to Retire Flash In 2020 - Adobe has said it will stop updating and distributing the Flash player in 2020. The web plugin is widely used across the web to power experiences such as video and gaming. Adobe says new, open standards such as HTML5 and WebGL have already begun to replace Flash in web browsers. Adobe is working with partners including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla to help with the end-of-life process. Adobe will update and patch Flash up until the end-of-life moment arrives in order to ensure users are protected. It is already encouraging content creators to adopt the new open standards ahead of the change. Flash was once a flashpoint in the mobile space after Apple debuted the iPhone. Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously penned a blog post entitled "Thoughts on Flash" in which he explained Apple's reasons for not supporting Flash within iOS. It was a major point of contention, as it prevented the iPhone from accessing some web content. Apple is now helping Adobe with the transition away from Flash.
  • Send: A Firefox Test Pilot Web Experiment - Mozilla is now testing its own privately-encrypted file sharing website named Send. • From Hack to Product, Eye Control for Windows 10 - Eye Control allows users to control the mouse pointer and an on-screen keyboard through eye movement. The keyboard works similarly to a gesture keyboard on a smartphone: a long pause on a letter marks the beginning of a word, and shorter pauses equate to additional letters. Tobii's 4C is the only compatible device for the time being, but additional models will be added in the future.
  • Under-Display Sensor May Finally Debut in Galaxy Note 9 - Under-the-screen fingerprint readers are proving to be a challenge for even the brightest engineers. While Qualcomm has supposedly figured it out, other giants have failed: Apple, for instance, has allegedly given up on incorporating the technology into the iPhone 8. Samsung couldn't get an under-display sensor into this year's flagships either, but a new report by analyst KGI suggests that the Note 9 will be the first to have it. Word is: "...Samsung will stick with the same rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S9, due out early next year. While that's a bit disappointing, we can hope that Samsung listens to customer feedback and adjusts the position to a more ergonomic location. However, Samsung is reported to be making its first smartphone with an under-display fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy Note 9. The report says that Samsung has no reason to risk the technology in the S9 since the upcoming iPhone 8 has ditched efforts to implement it. Seeing that mass-production level options are coming soon, it's clear that Samsung has good reason to bring that technology to its fall release.
  • iPhone 8 release date, news and rumors - Apple's latest earnings call strongly suggests we'll see the iPhone 8 in September, while a potential new camera feature has been found buried in Apple firmware, as has evidence of wireless charging.
  • Updated iPhone SE Rumored for Early 2018 Launch - The demise of the iPhone SE may have been greatly exaggerated: Apple has reportedly signed up Wistron to assemble an updated version of the 4-inch handset. The Taiwanese firm started producing the model in India in May, and it is likely that the phone will be released in that territory first. Cook said that Apple is upbeat about the Indian market, expecting that India will become the next China. According to the sources, Wistron is expected to start to ship the new iPhone SE -- which is expected to be more affordable than larger iPhones for many Indian consumers -- in the first quarter of next year. The sources said that Wistron will ship to the Indian market first before providing the products to consumers in other markets.
  • Amazon Prices the Motorola Moto E4 Plus at $140 - Amazon has added the Motorola Moto E4 Plus to its lineup of Amazon Prime Exclusive handsets. The phone is available for preorder today, with shipments kicking off Aug. 11. Amazon lists the 16 GB model of the phone at $140 and the 32 GB model at $160. These represent $40 in savings when compared to purchasing the phone outright from Motorola or other retailers. Amazon Prime Exclusive handsets are discounted because owners agree to view advertisements on the lock screen. The Moto E4 Plus is also available today from Best Buy, B&H, Fry's, Newegg, and Motorola.com for $180 (16 GB) and $200 (32 GB). The Moto E4 Plus boasts a metal design, and improves the screen size compared to the standard E4 to 5.5 inches (still 720p HD) and the battery to a massive 5,000mAh. The phone ships with a 10W charger for rapid power-ups. The E4 Plus also packs a 13-megapixel main camera with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, and autofocus, and a 5-megapixel front camera with selfie flash.

  • 'Perverse' malware infecting hundreds of Macs remained undetected - A mysterious piece of malware that gives attackers surreptitious control over webcams, keyboards, and other sensitive resources has been infecting Macs for at least five years. The infections—known to number nearly 400 and possibly much higher-remained undetected until recently and may have been active for almost a decade. Fatrick Wardle, a researcher with security firm Synack, said the malware is a variant of a malicious program that came to light in January after circulating for at least two years. Dubbed Fruitfly by some, both malware samples capture screenshots, keystrokes, webcam images, and information about each infected Mac. Both generations of Fruitfly also collect information about devices connected to the same network. After researchers from security firm Malwarebytes discovered the earlier Fruitfly variant infecting four Macs, Apple updated macOS to automatically detect the malware.

  • Google reportedly tried to buy Snapchat for $30 billion - Despite being a tech industry juggernaut, Google has never had much success with its social media endeavors. After Google+ and Buzz proved to be duds, it seems the search giant went after a company that was already well established: Snap, the firm behind Snapchat. Business Insider's Alex Heath reports that Google started informal discussions about buying Snap just before its Series F funding round in May 2016, which valued the company at $20 billion. One source says more talks about acquiring the firm took place just ahead of its IPO in March this year, and that the $30 billion figure had been on the table since the Initial Public Offering. This wouldn't be the first big organization Google has reportedly shown interest in acquiring. Spotify, SoundCloud, Twitch, and even Twitter were rumored to have been previous potential acquisitions, but they all came to nothing. Speaking about any formal discussions that may have taken place, a Snap representative told Business Insider “these rumors are false.” Google, meanwhile, declined to comment.  If Google really did make inquiries about buying snap for $30 billion and the company turned it down, the news could be a bitter pill to swallow for employees and investors. Snap's share price has plummeted to around $12.50, and it now has a market cap of about $14 billion, much lower than its $24 billion IPO valuation.
  • YouTube Music Now Supports Custom Offline Playlists - Google updated its YouTube Music application recently and made it possible for users to create their own playlists for offline listening. Before the update, YouTube Music would create mixtape for subscribers using its own algorithms — subscribers could not pick and choose individual songs or albums for offline playback. Now, users can select songs or videos and create their own list of tunes to listen to when the device is offline. YouTube Music is a separate music video-focused application. Offline playback requires a $10 monthly subscription fee, but is included at no extra cost to those who subscribe to YouTube Red or Google Play Music.
  • Bitcoin nearing a hard fork that will cause split into two - Due to discrepancies in opinion between Bitcoin miners and developers on how to handle increasing transaction times, the digital currency is about to split into two separate projects. The original coin will keep its name of "Bitcoin" and the new branch is to be known as "Bitcoin Cash". This is a rather peculiar event for a digital currency to go through, although it is not unexpected. A hard fork, the process of duplicating a blockchain and continuing on a separate path, has been expected for several weeks since miners have signaled support for a fork. The miners responsible for processing transactions and generating new Bitcoins ultimately decide which of the two coins to support. Investors (or gamblers, depending upon your viewpoint) holding Bitcoins will end up with two sets of coins in their wallets. Each will operate completely independently of one another once the split is finalized. Market value of each coin will likely take some time to stabilize as creating a new currency literally overnight can have interesting effects.
  • Russia will ban VPNs and proxies - We're used to hearing about China's continuing crackdown on VPNs, but it seems that Russia is going down the same route. President Vladimir Putin has just signed a new law prohibiting the use of technology that allows access to banned websites. The legislation, which was signed over the weekend and has already been approved by Russia's lower house of parliament (the Duma), is ostensibly designed to block “unlawful content” rather than place restrictions on citizens, according to Leonid Levin, the head of Duma's information policy committee. But, much like China, it's more likely that the move is a way of preventing Russians from viewing content that criticizes the government. With presidential elections set to take place in March, Putin wants to ensure voters can't see any online material that hasn't been approved by the state - even though he's widely expected to win a new six-year term. The VPN and proxy ban comes into effect on November 1, but this isn't the only new law Putin has introduced. From January 1, 2018, chat apps must start identifying users through their phone numbers. While some applications already suggest people hand over this information, it will become mandatory for everyone after this date. Additionally, companies behind the software will be required to limit access of any users spreading “illegal content.”

  • Star Wars Minus Williams - Throne Room - That's what the Auralnauts discovered earlier this summer when they received word that Warner/Chappell-the global music publishing arm of Warner Music Group-had filed a monetization claim on their "Star Wars Minus Williams" video through YouTube's Content ID System. That's right: The copyright holder was claiming ownership of something that wasn't there. Under the claim, Warner would receive any future ad revenue earned by the video, which has been viewed more than four million times. The company's effort to monetize silence transformed the Auralnauts video: Once just a clever gag, it quickly became a flashpoint in the broader YouTube conflict between freedom of expression and copyright protection.

AMD's Radeon RX Vega 64 / RX Vega 56 revealed - tech
(hx) 09:06 PM CEST - Jul,31 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
Gamers have endured a long wait for the Radeon RX Vega, but the wait is over, or at least nearly. With Radeon RX Vega GPUs confirmed to arrive in August, we now have official information on the models, pricing and specs. The flagship model will be the Radeon RX Vega 64, which will utilize the full capabilities of the new architecture: 64 compute units and 4096 stream processors, equipped with 8GB of HBM2 memory. There will be two variants, a more expensive $599 liquid cooled model that will push the clocks to the max and an air cooled version expected to retail for $499. Then there's the Radeon RX Vega 56, a cut down version of the same GPU, with fewer (56) compute units and stream processors for $399.

Among Vega highlights, AMD is touting support for the latest DirectX 12 features, use of faster HBM2 memory, an improved display engine for multiple 4K monitors, including support for 4K 120 Hz HDR displays, among many architectural improvements that help to push the performance envelope in this and upcoming graphics chips, as AMD points out "Vega 10" is the first implementation of the Vega architecture on the 14nm FinFET process. AMD also plans to offer Radeon Vega in packs that will grant you access to a game bundle (Wolfenstein II and Prey) and a discount when buying a Ryzen CPU or Samsung Freesync monitor. In fact, the RX Vega 64 Liquid may only be sold as part of this pack. We'll be able to better judge how good that is for gamers once we get actual performance data which remains undisclosed -- but just for reference, rumors point out to the Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition (the fastest version of Vega) to be on par with a GeForce GTX 1080.

There are write-ups of the new graphics cards on AnandTech, Ars Technica, Engadget, ExtremeTech, PC Gamer, PCGamesN, PC Perspective, PC World, techPowerUp, The Tech Report, TweakTown, and The Verge.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.2 - tech
(hx) 09:57 AM CEST - Jul,27 2017 - Post a comment
AMD has released the latest update to their Radeon GPU drivers, the Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.2. Note that AMD is no longer supporting Winddows 8/8.1 with newer RX 400 and 500 series (and also upcoming RX Vega). When asked about this, AMD provided the following statement: "With the declining use of Windows 8.1 we have focused our efforts on providing the best experience on the operating systems that the vast majority of our users are now using. Although we no longer officially support Windows 8.1, users can try the Windows 7 driver on an "as-is" basis."
Since the beginning of PC graphics, one of the biggest problems on this front has been synchronization between the game’s animation and the display’s update rate. Most displays update themselves at a fixed rate, typically at 60Hz or 60 times per second, in fixed steps. Meanwhile, games and other 3D graphics applications can produce new frames of animation at different rates, and those frame rates tend to vary over time. Often, much of what we perceive as slowdowns or sluggishness when gaming involves poor interactions between these two timing loops.

In fact, on a 60Hz display, animation can look more uneven when a game is running at 40 FPS than at 30 FPS, because at 40 FPS, the display is updated in an elliptical pattern:

You’re seeing a less pleasing pattern of animation, even though the GPU is cranking out frames at a higher rate, thanks to a timing sync issue between the game and the display.

We’ve come up with some outstanding technology to address this problem, most notably Radeon™ FreeSync technology for compatible monitors with variable refresh rates. I could talk about the theory all day, but you have to see FreeSync in action in order to appreciate it properly. Once you’ve experienced it, you won’t ever want to go back to gaming on a fixed-refresh display.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 384.94 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 09:19 AM CEST - Jul,25 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA is rolling out new GeForce 384.94 WHQL drivers. This update provides optimal experience LawBreakers, ARK: Survival Evolved, Fortnite Early Access, Dark and Light, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. ARK: SE has been on Early Access on Steam for over two years, but is finally coming out on August 8. Despite being a Steam Early Access title, ARK: SE has over 9 million users world wide. Maybe because it is hard to ignore a game that lets you hunt and hang around with massive dinosaurs. The previous GeForce 384.76 driver update was for the beta of LawBreakers but the new 384.94 WHQL is for the full game. This title has an August 8 release date as well. Aside from game optimizations, the 384.94 WHQL provides SLI profiles for both LawBreakers and ARK: Survival Eolved, as well as IL-2: Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad.
Other Changes in Version 384.94 WHQL update include:

[SLI][GeForce GTX 980][IL2-Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad]: There is no performance improvement under DirectX 11 after enabling SLI. [1903543]

Core i9 7900X vs 7820X vs 7800X vs 7740X! - tech
(hx) 09:18 PM CEST - Jul,23 2017 - Post a comment
Skylake-X's mixed fortunes in gaming performance aren't quite what we wanted to see - and all the evidence suggests that the existing Haswell-E and Broadwell-E processors are still great performers - but the sense is that more forward-looking engines will make more of the new architecture. Meanwhile, the overclocking potential is also remarkable, even if the real-world improvement to gaming is minimal beyond the now-standard all-core turbo deployed by all board manufacturers. But for gaming, while there are some noticeable gains, there is no real knock-out blow for the mainstream Core i7 chips, while comparisons with Haswell-E and Broadwell-E show that Intel's older many-core processors can still do the business. The Skylake-X price-cuts to the eight and ten-core processors are nice, but there is the sense that the enthusiast premium is still too much bearing in mind the change in market conditions, while continuing to cut-off PCI Express lane availability continues to come off as quite mean - something that must surely be coming to an end now AMD is offering access to all lanes for all processors across its range.

Regardless, out of all the chips reviewed here, while the 7900X and 7820X are perhaps the sexiest offerings, the six-core Core i7 7800X at Ł360/$390 is the only processor I would seriously consider buying for myself - it offers a lot more processing power than a quad for a relatively small premium, beats Ryzen on gaming, and it should be broadly competitive in productivity tasks too, though you may need to overclock to get the job done there.

  • Viking launches a 50TB 3.5-inch SAS SSD - Viking Technology has managed to develop an SSD with 50TB of storage, and it may just be enough to tremble the faint-hearted data hoarders. Viking has dubbed the new drives as the Ultra-High-Capacity Silo SSDs - or UHC-Silo, in short. The drives are using planar multi-level cell NAND flash chips, and Viking claims that it can endure one drive write per day (DWPD), every day, for five years. As for the speed, the drives are rated to deliver up to 500MB/s of sequential read and 350MB/s of sequential write. Unfortunately, these drives aren't exactly for the average consumers – they are meant for datacenters instead; they come in the 3.5-inch form factor, with a 6Gbps SAS interface. They are also not the fastest drives out there, but the capacity should make up for it. Viking says that these drives can help datacenters reduce their power, space, and cooling costs by up to 80% per terabyte, thanks to the low power consumption of less than 10W when idle, and 16W when at work.
  • Facebook Hints At S$300 VR Headset For The Masses - The impending VR headset from Oculus is designed to be a gadget that anyone can carry in a bag, and take out during a flight to enjoy some movies and games; and (of course) get updated on social media in VR. Facebook is hoping that the new kit will advance VR just like how Apple advanced smartphones. The device's design and features are not finalised yet, so details are scant. But the new headset is rumoured to be completely wireless and even lighter than the Gear VR headset, which requires a Samsung phone to operate. Mark Zuckerberg is betting that VR will be instrumental in the future of Social Media. But great VR headsets today are either too unaffordable or too cumbersome (shout out to the HTC Vive here). Even Facebook's Oculus Rift needs an expensive PC to work, piling more than a thousand dollars on the cost.  At less than S$300, this exciting VR headset from Oculus is priced far lower than the HTC Vive, and half of Sony's popular Playstation VR.

Microsoft 365 Enterprise will be available for purchase on August 1st, with pricing dependent on the specific plan and “other factors.” Microsoft 365 Business will be available in public preview on August 2nd, with a full release set for later this fall. Microsoft 365 Business will cost $20 per user, per month. Microsoft is also launching its Azure Stack today, allowing businesses to host their own hybrid cloud. Dell, HP, and Lenovo are all creating integrated systems to run Azure Stack and host apps and services on hardware that's located alongside a business' current infrastructure. The first systems will start shipping in September.
  • New Apple macOS malware alters the operating system - A recently-discovered macOS malware called OSX Dok, which alters the operating system to subvert the security measures put in place, has now started mirroring banking websites according to researchers, in an attempt to steal sensitive information from machines which are infected by it. The malware which uses 'phishing' and 'man in the middle' attacks to sneak onto an unsuspecting user's computer, was discovered back in May by ESET. Initially, it only tricked people into allowing access to their keychain, but since then, has morphed and is now targeting their bank accounts Apple, however, has continued to revoke the certificates that the malware used to gain access to the underlying system, but this seems to have had little to no effect on it so far. Researchers noted that the group behind the malicious program has continued to get new certificates; what they described as a 'surge in activity' with new compromised certifications being purchased daily.
  • A Reddit user claims he has downloaded all 900TB of music - Earlier this month, streaming audio platform SoundCloud announced that it would cut 40 percent of its staff and close its San Francisco and London offices, as part of an effort to stay independent and ensure long-term success. A few days later though, co-founder and CEO Alex Ljung admitted that these measures would only save the firm enough money to survive until the fourth quarter of this year. Fearing for the future of the site, one Reddit user who goes by the name of “makemakemake”, claimed on Reddit's “DataHoarder” thread that he has downloaded all 900TB of SoundCloud's public archive. He provided a 100GB log file to prove his accomplishment.  The Redditor used Google's cloud computing services and downloaded the files over a connection of 80Gb/s during the course of one weekend. Makemakemake does not plan to make the archive available to others, because as he claimed “it'd be quicker to download everything from [SoundCloud] yourself. Only have 10G to where the data is now.” The Reddit user is not the only one trying to archive SoundCloud, as according to The Verge, Archive Team has announced it will also make a backup of the company's vast database of music. Archive Team, founded by Jason Scott in 2009, is a group dedicated to the preservation of content housed by at-risk services.
  • Border Patrol Agents Cannot View Your Cloud Data - U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are not allowed to access or view consumer data that is stored in the cloud, such as social networks and email. The agency admitted as much in a letter sent by acting commissioner Kevin McAleenan to Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Rand Paul of Kentucky. The Senators posed several questions to the agency early this year after Americans reported a surge in border agents asking people to unlock their phones and even share social media passwords upon reentering the U.S. McAleenan insists officers are allowed to search phones without consent and without a warrant. For the most part, they are looking for information regarding terrorism, drug trafficking, and child pornography. However, the agency is limited to viewing content that is saved directly to the device, such as call logs, text messages, and photos. "Border searches conducted by CBP do not extend to information that is located solely on remote servers," wrote McAleenan. This means Americans' Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts are off limits to border patrol agents. McAleenan admitted that Americans do not have to unlock their devices or hand over their passwords, but they do so at the risk of losing their device, which may be detained by border patrol agents. The agency insists that phone searches are "exceedingly rare."

Blizzard Dropping XP and Vista Support - tech
(hx) 12:57 AM CEST - Jul,21 2017 - Post a comment
Blizzard sent out a press release announcing that in October they will drop support for Windows XP and Vista in most of their games.
Starting in October of this year, we will begin the process of ending support for Windows XP and Windows Vista in World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm.

Microsoft ceased mainstream support for these versions of Windows in 2009 and 2012, respectively, but since a decent portion of our audience was still using them at the time, we continued supporting them. However, there have been three major Windows releases since Vista, and at this point, the vast majority of our audience has upgraded to one of the newer versions.

The games will not run on these older operating systems once they are no longer supported, so we encourage any players who are still using one of the older OSes to upgrade to a newer version. We'll be rolling out this change on a staggered schedule, and will post further notices as we get closer to making the change for each game.

Intel's next generation CPUs will feature more cores - tech
(hx) 12:46 AM CEST - Jul,18 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to CPCHardware, the Intel Core i5 8400 will feature 6 CPU cores and 9MB of L3 Cache, won’t support Hyper Threading, will be clocked at 2.8Ghz, and its TDP will not be exceeding (theoretically) 65W. On the other hand, the Intel Core i5 8600K will also feature 6 CPU cores and 9MB of L3 Cache, won’t support Hyper-Threading, will be clocked at 3.6Ghz and its TDP will be at 95W. Regarding the Core i7 CPUs, CPCHardware revealed two models: Intel Core i7 8700K and Intel Core i7 8700. The only difference between them is that the non-K version will be clocked at a lower frequency (Core i7 8700K is reported to be clocked at 3.6Ghz whereas the non-K version will be clocked at 3.2Ghz). Apart from that, they feature the exact same features. Both of them come with 6 CPU cores and 12MB of L3 Cache, support Hyper-Threading, and offer a TDP of 95W. What’s also interesting here is that according to CPCHardware, this CPUs will be compatible with the LGA 1151 socket, meaning that those already owning these mainstream motherboards will be able to upgrade to the newest CPUs without any issues.

AMD Threadripper Pricing Unveiled - tech
(hx) 11:25 PM CEST - Jul,13 2017 - Post a comment
AMD unveils specs, pricing, and availability details for its Ryzen Threadripper 16-core, 32-thread and 12-core, 24-thread silicon, and you're looking at a saving of up to $1,000 compared to the equivalent Intel chip. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which will have 16-cores/32-threads and runs at 3.4 GHz (4.0 GHz in precision boost mode) will be priced at $999, while the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, which has 12 cores/24 threads and runs 3.5 GHz (4.0 GHz in precision boost mode) will retail for $799. These prices are substantially cheaper than the equivalent Intel silicon. Crunching the numbers here, these prices mean that the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X will cost $700 less than the equivalent Intel Core i9-7960X chip, and a whopping thousand dollars less than 18-core/36-thread Core i9-7980XE. At the more modest end of the spectrum (if you can call it that) the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X costs $400 less than Intel's Core i9-7920X, and $600 less than the Core i9-7940X. Both chips will be shipped unlocked for ease of overclocking, and both will use AMD's new Socket TR4, and will feature quad channel DDR4, and feature 64 lanes of PCI Express. Both the chips and motherboards are slated to be available in August, with Alienware Area-51 Threadripper Edition system pre-orders starting July 27.

AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Beats GTX1080 - tech
(hx) 12:14 AM CEST - Jul,11 2017 - Post a comment / read (3)
DudeRandom84 has tested AMD’s Radeon Vega Frontier Edition in DOOM and compared it with both NVIDIA’s GTX1080 and GTX1080Ti graphics cards. And the results fall in line with what we are basically expecting from the gaming/consumer variant of the upcoming Vega GPU. AMD’s Radeon Vega Frontier Edition runs DOOM faster than the NVIDIA GTX1080, but noticeably slower than the GTX1080Ti. The performance difference between the GTX1080Ti and the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is around 23%, so in this particular title we might see the RX Vega coming close to NVIDIA’s flagship (that is if AMD will be able to offer a 20% faster performance).

TechNews - AMD Launches Ryzen PRO CPUs - tech
(hx) 10:22 PM CEST - Jul,09 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • AMD Launches Ryzen PRO CPUs: Enhanced Security, Longer Warranty, Better Quality - The AMD Ryzen PRO lineup of processors consists of six SKUs that belong to the Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 families targeting different market segments and offering different levels of performance. As one would expect, the Ryzen 7 PRO models are aimed at workstation applications and thus have all eight cores with simultaneous multithreading enabled, the Ryzen 5 PROmodels  are designed for advanced mainstream desktops and therefore have four or six cores with SMT, whereas the Ryzen 3 PRO models are aimed at office workloads that work well on quad-core CPUs without SMT. The specifications of the Ryzen 7 PRO and the Ryzen 5 PRO resemble those of regular Ryzen processors. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 3 PRO are the first chips from the Ryzen 3 lineup and thus give us a general idea what to expect from such products: four cores without SMT operating at 3.1 – 3.5 GHz base frequency along with 2+8 MB of cache.

  • Malfunction at Micron's Fab-2 plant could raise global DRAM prices - According to a recent report from electronics supply and manufacturing blog Evertiq, production at Micron's Fab-2 fabrication plant in Taiwan's Taoyuan City was suspended on July 1 due to the malfunctioning of a nitrogen gas dispensing system that led to the contamination of wafers and equipment within the facility. DRAMeXchange estimates that Micron Technology Taiwan, also known as Inotera, has suffered a production capacity loss of around 60,000 wafer starts per month as a result of the malfunction. Labeled as a conservative estimate, this equates to around a 5.5 percent cut in the global DRAM production capacity for the month of July. So, what does the shutdown mean for consumers? With supply down, pricing in the memory market is only going to increase (remember what happened to the hard drive market after the devastating flooding in Thailand several years back. Inotera is also a major manufacturer of Micron's LPDDR4 products used to build iPhones which means that the shutdown could impact shipments of Apple's upcoming iPhone 8.

Various flavours of the release were released simultaneously; you can find Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, and Xfce editions all available for download on the Linux Mint website. It doesn't look like the upgrade paths from older releases have been made available just yet, with the team probably want to work out a few post-release kinks before opening the flood gates. The new release brings updates to several of the desktop environments. Cinnamon has been upgraded to version 3.4, MATE has been bumped to version 1.18, and Xfce has been upgraded to version 1.7.2. Meanwhile, the KDE version will continue to ship with Plasma 5.8. The stylish LightDM has been adopted as the login manager and has support for guest sessions. The core Linux Mint apps including Blueberry, Xed, Xplayer, Xreader, Pix, Xviewer, the Update Manager, and the Software sources configuration tool have undergone further improvements. The developers added a CLI interface for the update tool so that advanced users can now automate updates by writing scripts, routines, or cron jobs. Furthermore, the CLI interface has many of the features that the GUI includes such as level selection, security updates, kernel updates, and blacklisting.

  • South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange has been hacked - Just as South Korea is reportedly getting ready to regulate and legalize cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, news have emerged that Bithumb, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country has been hacked. Data from 30,000 customers has been compromised and according to the BBC, the data is being used to fool users into letting thieves steal funds from their accounts.  In a separate report BraveNewCoin explains that Bithumb users were victims of "voice phishing," where someone phoned them up saying they worked for Bithumb and scammed them out of funds. The breach is reported to have occurred in February, and is said to have involved an employee's home PC rather than computer servers at the firm's headquarters. Bithumb says it discovered the breach on June 29 and reported it to the authorities the next day. The exchange claims that the number of affected people represents approximately three percent of customers. The cumulative amount of bitcoins traded at Bithumb last year were estimated at 2 trillion won (US$1.74 billion). They are one of the five largest bitcoin exchanges in the world and hosts over 13,000 bitcoins worth of trading volume daily, or roughly 10 percent of the global bitcoin trade. Bithumb has promised initially to cover losses of up to 100,000 won (about $86) per customer, and will cover any remaining amount of money lost once it has been able to verify it.
  • New Zealand airport customs officials routinely demand passwords - According to an investigative report by New Zealand's 1 news, airport customs officials routinely force up to two travelers each day to give up their electronic devices and passwords for searching. According to the customs agents, the program is designed to look for smugglers by performing a "digital strip search" on the phones and laptops of travelers. This does not require a court order, but the agents do claim to adhere to New Zealand's privacy act. The searches can be quick or much more extensive depending on the level of danger perceived. One traveler was stopped for five hours and claims he was "made to feel like a terrorist" on his way home from Bali. Agents typically just peruse the data looking for any red flags but they have admitted to also copying it and passing it along to the government and police. According to the customs general manager, agents can seize travelers' devices at any moment and they have tools to break some types of encryption if it is encountered.

  • Android's July Security Patches Are Here - Google today provided details about its July 2017 security patches for Android devices. The patches plug a significant number of security holes that threaten all Android devices. Google found a significant number of vulnerabilities, of which it classified a dozen as critical, or able to remotely execute code. Many of the problems are related to specific hardware and the associated software drivers that control them, for example, a Broadcom WiFi driver, an HTC sound driver, and an Nvidia video driver. Google is pushing two separate patches to cover these vulnerabilities, one dated July 1 and the second dated July 5. Google is distributing the patches directly to its own Nexus- and Pixel-branded devices first. Google has already posted factory images for download directly from its web site. Over the air downloads will appear soon. Google's handsets will receive both patches in a single download. Google said to its knowledge none of these security holes have been exploited. Google has already given the patches to its OEM partners. Android handset makers are responsible for updating their own hardware with the patches.

NVIDIA adds DirectX 12 support for its Fermi GPUs - tech
(hx) 09:41 PM CEST - Jul,03 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
With its latest GeForce 384 series graphics drivers, NVIDIA quietly added DirectX 12 API support for GPUs based on its "Fermi" architecture, as discovered by keen-eyed users on the Guru3D Forums. These include the GeForce 400-series and 500-series graphics cards. The support appears to be sufficient to run today's Direct3D feature-level 12_0 games or applications, and completes WDDM 2.2 compliance for GeForce "Fermi" graphics cards on Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703), which could be NVIDIA's motivation for extending DirectX 12 support to these 5+ year old chips. Whether they meet your games' minimum system requirements is an entirely different matter.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note8 expected to have 64GB and 128GB variants - According to South Korean website OSEN, a Samsung official revealed that the Galaxy Note8 will have two storage variants, one with 64GB of internal storage and the other with 128GB. In addition to the internal storage, the device will have an expansion slot for microSD cards. The report mentions that the maximum storage can go up to 256GB with a memory card. Since the Galaxy S8 and S8+ already support 256GB cards, it should be safe to assume that the Note8 would as well. It is rumored that the Note8 will be one expensive device starting at €1000, and the 128GB variant will put an even deeper hole in customers' pockets if they choose to get one. Samsung is also expected to launch the refurbished version of the Galaxy Note7 in the coming week.

  • T-Mobile Hits 741 Mbps with LTE-LAA, Deploys LTE-U - T-Mobile today said it, too, has successfully tested LTE-LAA in real-world trials. The company claims its LTE-LAA tests reached 741 Mbps in and around Los Angeles. Like the recent tests conducted by AT&T, T-Mobile's use of LTE-LAA combines airwaves that it owns along with unlicensed spectrum to push speeds upward. T-Mobile says it was able to aggregate 80 MHz between licensed and unlicensed spectrum in its trials to attain the 741 Mbps download rate. More importantly for the short term, T-Mobile has deployed LTE-U in some markets. LTE-U relies on public 5 GHz spectrum (same as WiFi) along with advanced network technologies including carrier aggregation, 256 QAM, and 4x4 MIMO to boost LTE performance. T-Mobile is offering LTE-U in Bellevue, Wash.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Dearborn, Mich.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Richardson, Texas; and Simi Valley, Calif. More markets will score LTE-U service later this year. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is the only device able to take advantage of LTE-U.
  • Virgin Mobile offers first year of unlimited service for $1  - Virgin Mobile USA, which is owned and operated by Sprint, transformed itself today into new provider much more closely aligned with the Virgin brand. Significantly, Virgin Mobile USA is now an iPhone-only carrier, meaning Apple's iPhones are the only phones Virgin will sell moving forward. Virgin has dropped its roster of Android handsets completely. Further, shoppers will be able to buy and activate an iPhone on Virgin Mobile USA at Apple Stores. Pricing for Virgin Mobile iPhones starts at $279 for the 32 GB iPhone SE and ranges up to $969 for the 256 GB iPhone 7 Plus. According to the company's web site, Virgin Mobile does not offer financing for iPhones and customers will have to pay full price. The company now offers only a single service plan. For $50 per month, Virgin Mobile USA provides unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S. International roaming add-ons start at $5 per month. There are limitations on Virgin's plan: video playback is capped at 480p, music is streamed at 500Kbps, and gaming is streamed at 1.5Mbps. Virgin says mobile data speeds will be suppressed when the network is congested. For a limited time, Virgin Mobile is offering up to 12 months of service for just $1. The $1 yearly service offer is only available to customers buying a new iPhone and activating it on Virgin's network. Customers will have to sign up by July 31, 2017 to score the $1 deal. At the end of the 12-month service plan for $1, customers will automatically be moved to the $50 plan. Last, the $1 yearly plan and iPhone purchase buy customers access to the Virgin Inner Circle. The Inner Circle is a promotional program that provides benefits with other Virgin-branded properties. For example, Inner Circle members who buy one plane ticket on Virgin Atlantic will be given a second ticket for free. Inner Circle members who book two nights at a Virgin-owned hotel will be able to cash in on a third night for free. Virgin says these offers will be made available to Inner Circle members every few weeks. Customers interested in this package can pre-order one of Virgin Mobile USA's iPhones starting today. The phones and Inner Circle will become available starting June 27. Virgin did not immediately say what current Android-using customers can or should do with their handsets.

AMD Radeon Vega Frontier - game benchmark - tech
(hx) 06:50 PM CEST - Jun,29 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to the results, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition runs The Witcher 3 similarly to NVIDIA’s GTX1080. On max settings (but with Hairworks disabled), #define was getting 90-105fps. It’s worth noting that #define was using a 550W PSU (as such, there might be some throttle happening here) and that he clocked his graphics card at 1600Mhz. This basically confirms our beliefs that the consumer version of the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will be somewhere between the GTX1080 and the GTX1080Ti. After all, and as AMD claimed, the consumer version will perform better in games than the Frontier Edition.
