Razer today announced the Razer Phone, its first smartphone, with a focus on mobile gaming. The company bought NextBit, maker of the Robin phone, earlier this year and the Razer Phone was born from projects started at NextBit before the acquisition. The design is similar to the Robin in that it has a blocky shape and front-firing stereo speakers with independent amplifiers and a THX-certified DAC. The device boasts a number of firsts. To start, the 5.72-inch, wide-color gamut, IGZO LCD contains quad HD resolution and is the first display to refresh at a rate of 120 Hz (ideal for gaming). The Razer is also the first handset to ship with Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0, an enhanced version of the rapid-charging technology. Razer is pushing the phone’s pixels and polygons with a Snapdragon 835 processor with a whopping 8 GB of RAM. The phone has 64 GB of storage and supports microSD memory cards up to 2 TB. As for the camera, the phone has twin 12-megapixel cameras with PDAF and a two-tone, dual-LED flash. One camera has a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.75 and the other has a telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.6. An 8-megapixel, fixed-focus camera is located on front. A 4,000mAh battery provides plenty of power to keep games running for as long as possible. The phone runs Android 7 Nougat. Preorders kick off immediately. The Razer Phone will go on sale in the U.S. on November 17.

ASUS reveal GTX 1080 Ti Assassin's Creed Origins card - tech
(hx) 10:45 PM CET - Oct,30 2017 - Post a comment
ASUS rolled out a special variant of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card commemorating "Assassin's Creed: Origins." The card features a special cooler shroud with bronze-gold die-cast color forming the top half, and a groovy hieroglyph print with ROG and Assassin's Creed logos, on the back-plate, again in bronze-gold. The SKU includes a coupon to the standard edition of "Assassin's Creed: Origins," redeemable on UPlay. The card is otherwise identical to the ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC, including its out of the box clock speeds of 1569/1683 MHz (core/boost), and an untouched 11 GHz (GDDR5X-effective) memory. It also retains the RGB LED lighting along inserts on the cooler shroud, and the ROG logo on the back-plate. This card could be priced at a slight premium over the ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC.

(hx) 06:12 PM CET - Oct,30 2017 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released GeForce 388.13 WHQL software. These drivers are game-ready for the week's hottest AAA game releases, "Call of Duty: WWII," "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus," and "Need for Speed: Payback." This includes performance optimization, and GeForce Experience optimal settings. The drivers also add official support for the new GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card, which makes its market debut on the 2nd of November. The drivers also address a few bugs, including a rare issue with secondary displays blanking out on some systems, "Yellow bang appearing by the graphics entry in Device Manager," and momentary display corruption on notebooks with hybrid GPUs, in which the display is switching between the CPU-integrated and NVIDIA discrete GPUs.
Following the PC Open Beta, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software have made numerous changes to further improve the PC experience, and have updated their PC system requirements:

Call of Duty: WWII PC Recommended Spec

Assassin''s Creed: Origins Requires 8-Thread CPU - tech
(hx) 10:06 PM CET - Oct,29 2017 - Post a comment / read (6)
While four cores are usually sufficient for most games, Assassin’s Creed: Origins scales even on six cores. Tests performed by ComputerBase.de show that Intel’s 6-core, 12-thread Core i7-8700K, paired with an Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Strix OC, delivers the best performance in the game.
The flagship Coffee Lake CPU is 19% faster than the quad-core i7-7700K in 1920 × 1080, and delivers 12% better frametimes. This is a much bigger difference between the two than we’ve observed in other games.

AMD hardware, however, doesn’t seem to perform well in Assassin’s Creed Origins. At 1080p, their flagship Ryzen 7 1800X featuring 8 cores and 16 threads is slower than the 8700K, but can keep up with the Kaby Lake chip.

CPUs with less than eight threads will struggle in the latest Assassin’s Creed game. The Core i5-7600K for instance, which still has four cores as the i7-7700K but doesn’t support hyper-threading, is a whopping 27% slower than its elder sibling. The chip just runs out of breadth when it comes to frametimes with 38% slower results.

  • Hackers Distribute Malware-Infected Media Player to Hundreds of Mac - ESET researchers noticed that Eltima, the makers of Elmedia Player, have been distributing a version of their application trojanized with the OSX/Proton malware on their official website. Anyone who downloaded Elmedia Player or Folx software recently should verify if their system is compromised by testing for the presence of certain files and directories. If you have downloaded that software on October 19th before 3:15pm EDT and run it, you are likely compromised. As far as we know, only the version downloaded from the Eltima website contains the trojanized application. The built-in automatic update mechanism seems unaffected. OSX/Proton is a backdoor with extensive data stealing capabilities. It gains persistence on the system and can steal OS details, browser information, cryptocurrency wallets, and more.

  • Google Pixel Phones Have Hidden Image Processor - Google today revealed the Pixel Visual Core, a custom-designed co-processor that is built into every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphone. The Image Processing Unit has eight cores, each with 512 arithmetic logic units (ALUs) that can handle some three trillion calculations per second. Google claims the Pixel Visual Core with HDR+ can run five times faster and at less than one-tenth the energy than running directly on the application processor. The Pixel Visual Core is laying dormant for the time being, but Google says it will turn the co-processor on soon. Google created advanced software to manage the Pixel's ability to capture rich photos and it wants to extend that to other photo apps. The Pixel Visual Core will eventually allow third-party apps to use the Pixel's HDR+ technology. Google plans to enable the Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in the developer preview of Android Oreo 8.1 (MR1) in the coming weeks. Later, Google will let third-party camera apps access it using the Android Camera API, giving them access to the Pixel 2's HDR+ technology. The end result should be much better photos on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL when using photo apps other than the stock camera.

GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Will Launch Next Month - tech
(hx) 12:33 AM CEST - Oct,28 2017 - Post a comment
Nvidia has unveiled the pricing, specs, and release date for its upcoming graphics card the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. According to the manufacturer, the card is an excellent alternative to the GTX 1070 with nearly identical performance when compared to the GTX 1080. The GTX 1070 Ti is being marketed as a mid-step option for those who want something more powerful than the GTX 1070, but cannot afford the more costly GTX 1080. Currently, Nvidia has opened up pre-orders for the GTX 1070 Ti with the Founders Edition which launches at $449 — $50 less than the GTX 1080. On top of that, the original 1070 has seen a price drop, bringing it down to $399. The small price discrepancy between the GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, and GTX 1080 are prompting prospecting purchasers to speculate this release is aimed at the growing demand for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining, rather than solely gaming. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is set to be released on November 2, 2017

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is now available - tech
(hx) 09:54 PM CEST - Oct,17 2017 - Post a comment
Microsoft's Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is here and ready to download. The software giant first started testing its Fall Creators Update back in April, and now all Windows 10 users will be able to experience the improvements today. Just like previous updates, Microsoft is rolling it out in stages, and you can check whether it’s available for your own PC from Windows Update. If your device is eligible then it will start downloading in the background, and a prompt will appear to schedule a time to install. If your device isn’t on the list, then that doesn’t mean you can’t skip the line. You can manually update to the Fall Creators Update over at Microsoft’s Windows 10 site. Simply click the “update now” button and proceed with the upgrade assistant. You can also download ISO images of the final copy of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update should you want to clean install it on your PC. The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is version 1709.

The Windows 10 Creators Update will improve Game Mode. This mode promises to allow players’ games to use the full processing power of their device as if it was an Xbox game console. This mode has been available in Windows 10 for a while, and the performance improvements it introduced were minimal. This mode will most probably be useful to those with really dated systems. Therefore, we’ll simulate a dual-core system and we’ll run some benchmarks in order to see whether the gaming experience is improved with Game Mode. The Windows 10 Fall Creators update will also introduce two new anti-cheat tools: Game Monitor and TruePla

David Wright from the University of Exeter, have made a pioneering breakthrough by developing photonic computer chips - that use light rather than electricity - that imitate the way the brain's synapses operate. Professor Harish Bhaskaran from Oxford University and who led the team said "The development of computers that work more like the human brain has been a holy grail of scientists for decades. Via a network of neurons and synapses the brain can process and store vast amounts of information simultaneously, using only a few tens of Watts of power. Conventional computers can't come close to this sort of performance."
  • Why are Apple's chips faster than Qualcomm's? - On paper, the multi-core result of the hexa-core A11 is 50 percent faster than the octa-core Snapdragon 835. As I mentioned above though, Geekbench doesn't test other parts of the SoC. Things like the DSP, the ISP and any AI-related functions will influence the day-to-day experience of any devices using these processors. However, when it comes to raw CPU speed, the A11 is the clear winner. This can be a bit hard for Android fans to stomach. So what is the reason? First we need a bit of a history lesson.

  • Firefox officially gets end-of-support date on Windows XP and Vista - For those still clinging to Windows XP and Vista, the list of companies willing to support these ailing operating systems is ever growing thin by the day. Mozilla has joined the likes of Microsoft and Google in officially announcing its end-of-support date for the Firefox browser on either operating systems, which has been a life-line to those users who haven't upgraded yet. Yesterday, the company announced that it will end the 'Firefox Extended Support Release' program on June 2018, terminating any future updates or security patches from that point on. Microsoft ended support for Windows XP back in 2014, prompting users to upgrade to a more recent release of Windows through a pop-up box, in addition to terminating support for Windows Vista earlier this year. In 2015, Google announced that Chrome - the most popular web browser - would lose support for both of these aging operating systems in 2016, including several older versions of macOS.

  • Pixel/Pixel XL Will Have Unlimited Original Uploads to Photos for Life - Google went out of its way to put a expiration date on unlimited photo uploads for the new Pixel 2s, but a representative has clarified that nothing is changing for the original Pixels. Both the 2016 Pixel and 2016 Pixel XL will continue to receive free unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos with no time limitations. That means the free unlimited original photo storage on the Pixel 2 isn't quite as good as the deal that was previously offered. Thankfully, Google also reaffirmed that photos taken with the Pixel 2 wouldn't be changed after 2020, they will always be accessible at the original quality, and after 2020 unlimited uploads will still be allowed at a slightly lower "high-quality." So, there you have it. If you were worried about your OG Pixel losing its unlimited original quality uploads, there's no reason to fret.

  • Microsoft Exec Says Windows Mobile Is Basically Done - Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore on Sunday explained in a series of Tweets that the company is no longer creating new software or hardware for its Windows Mobile platform. Belfiore was responding directly to questions posed by fans when he said, "Many companies still deploy [Windows Phone] to their employees and we will support them! Of course we'll continue to support the platform ... bug fixes, security updates, etc. But building new features/[hardware] aren't the focus," Belfiore admitted that he, like Microsoft founder and former CEO Bill Gates, has switched to Android. "As an individual end-user, I switched platforms for the app/hw diversity." The questions put to Belfiore arose due to Microsoft's recent move to expand its Edge browser to to iOS. The browser is in beta mode via the App Store. Microsoft has focused much of its mobile app efforts on the Android and iOS platforms in recent years with its Office productivity suite, Skype communications tool, Android Launcher, OneDrive, and more. In the end, apps became the problem for Windows 10. "We have tried very hard to incent app [developers]. Paid money ... wrote apps for them ... but volume of users is too low for most companies to invest," wrote Belfiore. With no real selection of apps, Windows Mobile didn't have much of a chance against the Android and iOS platforms, which each offers more than one billion apps available to end users.
  • Google's New Pixel Phones to Ship with Embedded eSIM - Google has revealed that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets will include an optional, built-in eSIM card, allowing people to bypass the use of traditional SIM cards. According to Google, the eSIMs will be compatible with its own Project Fi service. During initial setup, owners will be asked if they want to use the embedded eSIM. Google says it will do the heavy lifting of activating the eSIM on its network. This means you no longer need to go to a store to get a SIM card for wireless service, wait a few days for your card to arrive in the mail, or fumble around with a bent paper clip to coax your SIM card into a tiny slot, explained Google in a blog post. For now, the eSIM is being tested on the new Pixel handsets only. Users will have to purchase the Pixel directly from the Play Store or Project Fi to take advantage of the eSIM. Both phones include a standard slot for nano SIM cards.

Nvidia GeForce 387.92 WHQL driver - tech
(hx) 09:16 PM CEST - Oct,09 2017 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the GeForce 387.92 Game Ready Graphics Drivers, which presents a more comprehensive package than most Game Ready drivers. This time, the changes aren't mostly limited to new, upcoming games support, though that's still part of the package. On that front, you can count on these drivers being optimized for the upcoming Middle-earth: Shadow of War and The Evil Within 2, as well as Forza Motorsport 7, on which NVIDIA expects anywhere between 15% and 25% performance improvement (which should help improve NVIDIA's situation). On the VR space, this driver package brings the optimal experience for 4A Games' Artika.1 (if you recognize the studios' name, it's probably because they're the ones behind the Metro game series. Also interesting, however, are the feature updates that come with this driver package. Fast Sync is now supported for SLI configurations, though Maxwell architecture users should steer clear of 4K resolution, which isn't supported for this feature. There's also NVIDIA GameStream support for HDR under Windows 10. On the renderer side, we see added support for OpenGL 4.6, as well as for DirectX Intermediate Language (DXIL). This includes full support for DirectX 12 Shader Model 6.0 ( for features such as Wavemath), and the DirectX Shader Compiler, though it's only supported on NVIDIA Kepler and later GPUs. There are also some improvements to full-screen Vulkan applications, though this particular change may cause more errors while leaving and entering full-screen mode (Alt-Tab).

Western Digital announced it has begun providing cloud and hyperscale data center customers with the world's first 14-terabyte hard drive, through its HGST subsidiary. The HGST Ultrastar HS14 offers 40 percent more capacity and twice the sequential write performance of its shingled magnetic recording (SMR) predecessor. It also gives WD temporary bragging rights.
Based on host-managed shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology, this 3.5-inch hard drive helps address Big Data challenges and the emerging sequential write workload segment in the data center. Optimized to deliver the highest capacity at low total cost of ownership (TCO), the Hs14 provides unprecedented capacity leadership by harnessing two core complementary technologies -- 4th generation HelioSeal technology and 2nd-generation host-managed SMR. These field proven technologies provide the foundation for delivering efficiency, quality and reliable performance required by cloud and hyperscale data centers.

Intel unveils its 8th gen Core processors - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Sep,26 2017 - Post a comment / read (3)
Intel has issued an official press release in which the company claimed that its new 8th generation desktop CPUs will be up to 25% faster than its 7th generation desktop CPUs in multi-threaded games. The new family of Core processors will initially have six SKUs; three of them are unlocked and can be overclocked with a supported motherboard. The top of the line i7-8700K and i7-8700 have six cores and 12 threads. The i5 variants: i5-8400 and i5-8600k also have six cores but lack hyper-threading. While lower-end i3 CPUs have usually featured hyper-threading, this time around, Intel has decided to ditch it in favor of the updated core counts. The new processors are based on Intel's 14nm FinFET process introduced with Skylake. Compared to previous generations, the new 14nm++ architecture provide better boost clocks and multitasking capability. However, the updated core counts come with a penalty: base clocks are marginally lower compared to Kaby Lake CPUs. Although according to Intel, this shouldn't be an issue; the company claims Coffee Lake CPUs will perform 25 percent better in FPS games than their predecessors. The additional physical cores and threads should also perform better under multithreaded workloads. Intel is also launching a new chipset with its latest processors called Z370. This will introduce a better power delivery system for the new CPUs; native support for 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM and Thunderbolt 3 is also on board. Intel says its new platform will not be backward compatible with older Skylake and Kaby Lake, so people who want to upgrade to Coffee Lake, will have to buy new motherboards. With Coffee Lake, Intel is finally bringing six-core processors to mainstream desktop PCs. Whether this is a proper reply to AMD's recent success, time will tell.

It appears that the first third-party gaming benchmarks have been leaked online. Expreview has tested Intel’s latest CPU with both default and overclock frequencies.

How Much Money Can Pirate Bay Make? - tech
(hx) 11:19 PM CEST - Sep,24 2017 - Post a comment / read (6)
How much money can a site like The Pirate Bay make through mining? TorrentFreak did some back-of-the-envelope calculations, starting with the site's visitor numbers (roughly 315 million visits per month) and ultimately found that TPB could get $12,000 a month based on the miner used, Coinhive, which pays out 0.00015 XMR per 1M hashes.
SimilarWeb estimates that The Pirate Bay has roughly 315 million visits per month. On average, users spend five minutes on the site per "visit". While we have reason to believe that this underestimates the site’s popularity, we’ll use it as an illustration.

We spoke to Coinhive and they estimate that a user with a mid-range laptop would have a hashrate of 30 h/s.

In Pirate Bay’s case this would translate to 30 hashes * 300 seconds * 315M visits = 2,835,000M hashes per month. If the miner is throttled at 30% this would drop to 850,000M hashes.

If Coinhive pays out 0.00015 XMR per million hashes, TPB would get 127.5 XMR per month, which is roughly $12,000 at the moment. Since the miner doesn’t appear on all pages and because some may actively block it, this number will drop a bit further.

Keep in mind that this is just an illustration using several estimated variables which may vary greatly over time. Still, it gives a broad idea of the potential.

  • Google Deletes Inactive Android Backups After 2 Months - Google will delete Android device backups that are left inactive for two months with little or no warning. The discovery was made by a Reddit user who left a Nexus 6P backup in his Google Drive Backup folder for more than two months, only to later find it had been deleted by Google automatically. Google Support documentation appears to confirm the behavior. "Your backup will remain as long as you use your device. If you don't use your device for 2 weeks, you may see an expiration date below your backup. Example: 'Expires in 54 days.'" The maximum limit for device backups appears to be 60 days, or two months. The short expiration date on device backups is odd, given how freely Google offers online storage to its users. Google has not addressed the discovery directly.

  • Stupid Android app so you can turn your phone into an iPhone X - A developer going by the name of damianpiwowarski on Reddit has clearly been inspired by the recent reveal of the iPhone X and its top center screen "cutout", and has subsequently made an app to turn any smartphone into an iPhone X, for those who feel like they are being left out of this seemingly new phenomenon. Upon installing the app, which is free, there's also an option to turn it into Essential's PH-1 phone for the "diehard Android fans" (also featuring a smaller, but more visible cut out) and installers can also donate, which according to the developer, does nothing but remove ads from the app. A word of warning though, as noted on the Play Store page for the app, "This app may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised". FYI, the developer is responsible for a couple of other more serious apps; Adapticons, which has been downloaded over 800 times, with an average rating of 4.1 and Navbar Apps, a Nav bar skinner for Android, downloaded over 12,000 times with a rating of 4.4.

Though it's unlikely the NFL dries up without the emergence of a company like Vicis, even a few star players walking away from the game is damning evidence of an eventual decline.

BlueBorne Attacks Impact Bluetooth Devices - tech
(hx) 10:03 AM CEST - Sep,15 2017 - Post a comment / read (7)
IoT-focused security company Armis Labs revealed a Bluetooth-based attack that impacts billions of devices, including Android, Linux, and unpatched Windows and iOS10 or earlier devices. Along with the Bluetooth attack, which the company called "BlueBorne," Armis also revealed eight zero-day vulnerabilities that could be used to facilitate the BlueBorne attack against some devices. According to Armis Labs, BlueBorne not only affects billions of smartphones, desktops, sound systems, and medical devices, but it requires no action from users. It's also invisible to users, and worst of all, it can start spreading from device to device on its own. Because the Bluetooth process has high privileges on most operating systems, that means once BlueBorne reaches a device, it can also cause significant damage through remote code execution, man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, or by penetrating air-gapped networks that otherwise have no internet connectivity. This can make the BlueBorne attack vector useful in cyber espionage, data theft, ransomware, and even for creating large botnets out of infected IoT devices.

Apple Reveals iPhone X with Facial Recognition - tech
(hx) 08:51 PM CEST - Sep,12 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
Apple today announced the iPhone X (iPhone 10), a more advanced smartphone that serves as the company's flagship device. It boasts an edge-to-edge display with glass on the front and back surfaces. It has a stainless steel frame holding the glass panels together. Like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X is water and dust resistant. It includes what Apple calls the Super Retina display. It is 5.8 inches across the diagonal with 2,465 by 1,135 pixels and it relies on OLED technology rather than LCD. It gets rid if the home button that has adorned the front of iPhones for 10 years. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen calls up the home screen, as well as the app switcher. The side button now activates Siri. It uses Face ID for unlocking the handset, based on facial recognition. It relies on the A11 Bionic chip and specialized hardware to create machine learning algorithms. The neural engine has its own dual-core design and can conduct 600 billion operations per second to assess the user's identity. The bar at the top of the screen includes an infrared camera, user-facing camera, flood illuminator, dot projector, earpiece, and proximity sensors. The iPhone X comes in black and silver.

Intel Core i7-8700K Benchmarks Leaked - tech

VideoCardz has gathered some of the leaks that have appeared over the past few days regarding the 6-core Intel i7-8700K: the most interesting one comes from Karl Morin, a Canadian tech journalist who stumbled upon an HP Omen desktop PC running the upcoming CPU. The multi-threaded test suggests that it’s proportionately faster than the quad-core chips it succeeds, and is even faster than older 6-core HEDT chips thanks to higher clock speeds and a newer micro-architecture.

  • AMD Surpass Intel In Monthly Revenue Sales - AMD has reached a milestone, falling second to Intel's CPU's for over a decade AMD has smashed their way through to the front with their flagship CPU Thread ripper. The data that has been pulled up from "Newegg" of Germany, Mindfactory.de shows both Ryzen and Threadripper CPU's surpassing that of Intel's over a wide spread of several months. This just reinforces the fact that Intel were scrambaled with the AMD's launch back into the market, showing that they can actually make CPU's that can compete and even surpass that of an 'i' series. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X flew past that of which Intel could offer with a 45% gap, in return we saw an announcement by Intel showing off their new 8th Gen CPU's as well as their Ice Lake CPU's.
  • NVIDIA GeForce 1040 Graphics Coming Soon to Laptops - There aren't a lot of details about the new graphics solution yet, but odds are that it'll be based on the same architecture as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1050/1060/1070/1080 yet feature fewer CUDA cores (the current entry-level model has 640 cores, while the highest-performance model has 2560). I have no idea how it will compare to the more recently released GeForce MX150, though (which has 384 CUDA cores and 2GB of RAM). As for the Lenovo IdeaPad 320S, it's a 15.6-inch laptop with a Core i5-8250U quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 1920x1080 pixel display.
  • Microsoft Surface Laptop Review - The Surface Laptop is highly configurable, with options including i5 or i7 processors, up to 16Gb of RAM and a 1Tb SSD. Be prepared to really pay for the higher end options, which can be particularly expensive. The Surface Laptop is not yet listed in the Microsoft Singapore online store, though our model is listed elsewhere for $1299 USD, which is a decent price for this spec.
  • Lenovo Legion Y920 review: A gaming laptop with few compromises - It includes an unlocked Intel Core i7-7820HK processor, and it's VR-ready due to the 8GB Nvidia GeForce 1070 GPU. It packs 16GB RAM, along with a 512GB SSD and 1TB SSD. The 17.3-inch 1080p display supports Nvidia's G-Sync, and the JDL speakers include Dolby Home Theater.
  • Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be available October 17 - Microsoft has officially announced that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be arriving on October 17. The update, which will launch roughly six months after the first, contains a number of fresh features in addition to the usual bug fixes and security patches. A new feature called Timeline allows users to go back to a certain date and time and restore running processes from that time. This can make it easier to pick up working where you left off a few hours ago or even several days ago. OneDrive is also receiving an overhaul to bring Files On-Demand. Folders and files will be able to selectively be downloaded so that local disk space will not be eaten up by rarely used data. For those wondering about the now obsolete Windows Movie Maker, a new app called Story Remix will serve as a replacement to provide basic multimedia creation and editing. Images and videos can be dropped in, rearranged and easily turned into a suitable output format.
  • SanDisk Debuts 400 GB MicroSD Memory Card for Phones - SanDisk today introduced a microSD card with a capacity of 400 GB. It has more storage than any other mobile memory card, according to SanDisk. Any device capable of supporting 2 TB cards can handle the new option from SanDisk. The card is capable of containing more than 40 hours of full HD video and it features fast transfer speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The card meets the A1 App Performance Class spec, which means Android device owners can store and run large applications, such as games, from the card without worrying about performance. At the same time, SanDisk updated tis Memory Zone mobile app, which people can use to manage their device and memory card storage. The 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I memory card is available online from SanDisk and Amazon.com for $250.
  • Dell Visor hands-on: Windows Mixed Reality headset - Dell has announced the Visor VR118 headset at IFA 2017. This headset is Dell's first entry into the burgeoning head-mounted display market. The Visor VR118 is designed to keep the weight of the device off of the user's face and nose - a primary user complaint about the HTC Vive. The front portion of the headset can flip upward to let users look at the real world without needing to remove the entire Visor. The display and power cables run along the ring that encircles the user's head and waterfall down the user's back, much like with other VR headsets we've seen. Dell didn't offer a ton of technical details about the Visor, but we do know that the display has a total resolution of 2880x1440 and a 90 Hz refresh rate
  • Samsung says that Galaxy Note8 pre-orders are the best ever - On August 23, Samsung announced its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy Note8. Since then, pre-orders have been available, and the company announced today that the new handset has outsold all previous Galaxy Note devices in the same amount of time. While the handset is slated to launch on September 15, those that pre-order now and choose expedited shipping can still get it before then. Those that order before September 24 will get either a Gear 360 camera, or a Galaxy Foundation Kit, which includes a 128GB EVO+ micro-SD card and a Fast Charge Wireless Charging Convertible.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Impressions!  - The Note8 eschews the blockier design language of previous generations for the svelte look of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The phone has two curved pieces of glass mated to an aluminum frame. The Note8 jumps to Samsung's Super AMOLED Infinity Display. It measures 6.3 inches across the diagonal with quad HD+ resolution. The Note8 is among the first from Samsung to move to a dual-camera configuration. The handset has twin, full-color 12-megapixel sensors with one wide-angle lens (f/1.7) and one telephoto lens (f/2.4).
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Teardown  - iFixit has disassembled the Galaxy Note 8 and found that it could be a tricky repair due to its glass rear panel, which is attached using a lot of tough adhesive. While the device was ultimately given a low repairability score (4 out of 10), the team likes how many of its components are modular and can be replaced independently. Additionally, all screws can be removed with a standard Phillips screwdriver.
  • LG Announces the V30 Flagship with FullVision Display - The V30 does away with the secondary display that adorned the front of the V10 and V20. In its place, LG created what it calls the Floating Bar, a semi-transparent strip that gives V30 owners access to frequently used functions, such as contacts and settings. The phone is among the first to use a plastic OLED FullVision display, though it is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The 6-inch panel has 2,880 by 1,440 pixels, or a 2:1 (18:9) aspect ratio, and nearly non-existent side bezels. LG reduced the phone's upper and lower bezels by 20% and 50%, respectively, when compared to the V20
  • Huawei Announces Kirin 970 With AI Co-Processor - At IFA in Berlin, Huawei announced its next flagship mobile SoC, the Kirin 970. Huawei claims the chip is the first to have a dedicated co-processor for AI, which it calls an NPU (Neural-network Processing Unit). The NPU allows AI tasks such as image recognition to run 5-25 times faster than chips without an NPU, and with up to 50x better battery life. The NPU supports a variety of AI platforms, including Google's TensorFlow, Facebook's Caffe2, and Android NN. The Kirin 970 also includes a Cat. 18 LTE modem supporting up to 1.2 Gigabit speeds. It has eight CPU cores (4 A73 at 2.4 GHz and 4 A53 at 1.8 GHz) and 12 GPU cores, plus a dual ISP. It has 5.5 billion transistors and is based on a 10nm process for high energy efficiency. The company also announced that its Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro device with "full display" will be powered by the Kirin 970 chip. The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be announced October 16th in Munich.
  • Brain Controllers Progress - An article on the New York Times discusses progress on neural interfaces, and the implications thought controllers have on both video games as well as future prosthetic devices. Though they say some of this still inspires skepticism, there are some signs of progress over products like the Minddrive, which was a first attempt at something like this that they reported on over 20 years ago with a much greater degree of disbelief.
  • Voice-controlled systems like Alexa and Siri can be hijacked - As voice-controlled devices such as smartphones, vehicle infotainment systems, and smart speakers become increasingly popular, hackers are coming up with innovative ways of targeting them. Now, a team of researchers has shown off a method that uses ultrasonic frequencies – sounds so high that they're inaudible to humans. Scientists from China's Zhejiang University demonstrated the technique, which is aptly called DolphinAttack. First, they created a program that can translate human voice commands into sounds above 20kHz. These were played back using a standard smartphone equipped with an amplifier, ultrasonic transducer, and an extra battery, all of which costs less than $3.

The Droid Inventor Kit includes all the modules needed to recreate a miniature R2D2 and send it on missions
  • T-Mobile to Give Some Customers Netflix for Free - T-Mobile has said certain subscribers can enjoy Netflix at no additional cost. The company announced the program, called Netflix On Us, through one of its Un-carrier moves. Netflix is available to T-Mobile One customers who have a minimum of two lines and the taxes/fees included plan. T-Mobile says promos that include free lines and free phones are eligible for the offer. Customers need to associate their Netflix account with T-Mobile through the T-Mobile mobile application. Thereafter, T-Mobile will cover the Netflix bill on a monthly basis for as long as customers maintain their plan. It includes the standard subscription to Netflix, which typically costs $10 per month and permits up to two simultaneous streams. The offer can save customers up to $120 per year. Customers can subscribe to Netflix Premium, which includes more streams and higher-resolution video at $12 per month, and pay only the $2 difference in cost, which will appear on their monthly bill. The offer also includes Family Allowance at no extra cost, which will allow parents to manage their children's phone usage, such as time limits. Video streamed over T-Mobile's network is DVD quality (480p), rather than high definition. T-Mobile One Plus subscribers can stream at 1080p, though their rate plan costs a bit more each month. Customers on one of T-Mobile's Unlimited 55+ plans or 2 Lines for $100 plans will need to switch to the newest T-Mobile One plan. Netflix is available to T-Mobile customers at no cost beginning September 12.
  • Google Details September's Android Security Patches - Google today made its monthly security patches available to select Android devices. September's patches plug a significant number of security holes that threaten most Android devices. Google found dozens of vulnerabilities, including a number of which classified as critical, or able to remotely execute code. Some of problems are related to specific hardware and the associated software drivers that control them, such as components from MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Broadcom. Other vulnerabilities impact the kernel, system, and media framework directly. Google is pushing two separate patches to cover these problems, one dated September 1 and the second dated September 5. Google said the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus Player, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P devices will receive the September security patches as part of the upgrade to Android 8 Oreo. Google has already posted factory images for download from its web site. Google's handsets will receive both patches in a single download. As far as Google is aware, none of these security holes have been exploited by hackers or other entities. Google has already given the patches to its device-maker partners. Phone manufacturers are responsible for updating their own smartphones with the patches
