Windows 10 Experiment: Running Apps in Tabs - tech
(hx) 01:03 AM CET - Nov,29 2017 - Post a comment / read (1)
With its latest feature in Windows 10, currently dubbed "Sets," Microsoft has taken some major cues from what browser makers learned years ago. Basically, it lets you group together Windows apps in tabs. Think of Sets as a mashup of existing and emerging Windows 10 technologies. Take Windows Explorer and the little-used Task View within Windows 10, mix in the newer "Pick up where you left off" and "Timeline" features, and wrap it all into a single-window experience. The idea is that every task requires a set of apps Mail, a browser, PowerPoint, even Win32 apps like Photoshop and those apps will be optionally organized as tabs along a single window.

AMD bundles PREY and Wolfenstein 2 - tech
(hx) 03:39 PM CET - Nov,25 2017 - Post a comment
AMD has announced that it is bundling Bethesda’s PREY and Wolfenstein 2 with its new RX Vega graphics cards. Those who purchase a new RX Vega 56 or an RX Vega 64 GPU from today and until December 31st will get free copies of these two games. However, this offer will also end when its supply of key codes is exhausted, even prior to December 31st. PC users will have two months in order to redeem their gifts. As the red team claimed, players will have to redeem the AMD Unique ID until February 28th. After this period, the AMD Unique ID will be void. Do note that those who live in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Israel will receive Sniper Elite 4 instead of Wolfenstein 2

VRMark Cyan Room DirectX 12 benchmark - tech
(hx) 03:29 PM CET - Nov,23 2017 - Post a comment
Futuremark has announced the release of VRMark Cyan Room. VRMark Cyan Room is a VR benchmark that uses a pure DirectX 12 engine built in-house and optimized for VR. This benchmark tool features a large, complex environment and many eye-catching effects. Players can run the test on their monitor or on a connected HMD. The benchmark runs on a fixed path, which makes it easy to repeat the test on other systems to compare performance. At the end of the test, players will see if their PC was able to meet the target frame rate. Moreover, a comparison with other systems, and detailed hardware monitoring charts will be present.

VRMark Cyan Room also offers an Experience mode with a VR headset to judge the performance of a system. This mode lets you freely explore the Cyan Room in your own time. You can change the rendering resolution and other settings to make the scene more or less demanding. Experience mode is a great way to see how performance affects your VR experience. Furthermore, it appears that this DX12 benchmark runs incredibly well on AMD’s hardware

  • Intel To Assemble Coffee Lake CPUs In Chengdu Plant - In a product change notice, Intel stated that it will begin assembling Coffee Lake desktop CPUs at its plant located in Chengdu, China. Since their launch, Coffee Lake desktop CPUs have been somewhat limited in availability. In an effort to help alleviate supply issues, Intel notified its customers that they will soon begin also receiving parts assembled in China. The change is effective for i5-8400, i5-8600K, i7-8700, and i7-8700K CPUs.

  • Seagate BarraCuda Pro 12TB HDD Tested - The BarraCuda Pro 12TB is a unique product in the market. It is not often that we see a leading capacity 'desktop-class' hard drive rated for 24x7 operation or workload ratings of 300TB/year. To top it all, Seagate is even throwing in a 5-year warranty. A 2-year data recovery service (DRS) is also included. The lower load/unload cycles rating (300K, compared to the 600K in the equivalent NAS drives) and MTBF (1M hours, compared to 1.2M for the equivalent Pro NAS drive) are slightly disappointing aspects, but, they are more than made up for by the warranty and DRS.
  • Best PC Power Supplies: Holiday 2017 - For users that want the absolute best and cost is not an issue, the Corsair AX1500i has been the undisputed performance champion over the past several years. Seasonic and their new PRIME Titanium series are serious competition against Corsair’s flagships, but Seasonic does not have any relevant units with a power output as high as the AX1500i does. There is virtually no other >1200 Watt PSU available today that combines the quality, performance, efficiency, and features of the AX1500i. The only problem is that the AX1500i currently retails for $400, which is enough to buy a complete mainstream system.

  • Surface Book 2 gets torn down, repairs are tough - The Surface Book 2 was available for pre-order last week, but you can now head to a store and make your purchase on the spot, as it made its official retail debut on November 16. While it is a beautifully crafted machine, it seems that just like its predecessor, the Surface Book 2 isn't terribly easy to repair
  • How To Fix Windows 10 Unsupported Disk Layout UEFI Error - A common problem that Windows users have encountered when trying to update Windows 10 is the “Unsupported Disk Layout for UEFI Firmware” error. This error basically means that the partition structure of your hard drive is not supported by the version of Windows 10 that you want to upgrade to. This error can be resolved by creating a Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR), which is used on Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)/GUID Partition Table (GPT) disks. Without getting too technical, we will outline the steps to fix this error when attempting to update.

The human-robot hybrid won't be a monstrosity of metal. It'll just be a chip in your brain instead of an iPhone in your hand.
  • Apple Releases iOS 11.1.2 to Clean Up More Bugs - Apple today released iOS 11.1.2 for the iPhone and iPad. This minor release primarily fixes bugs. Specifically, it resolves an issue where the iPhone X screen might temporarily freeze up or become unresponsive to touch input after a rapid decrease in temperature. It also addresses an issue that might result in blurry Live Photos captured with the iPhone X. The small update is free to download and install over the air.
  • Watch a 10-Year-Old's Face Unlock His Mom's iPhone X  - Attaullah Malik and Sana Sherwani made that discovery earlier this month, when their fifth-grade son, Ammar Malik, walked into the bedroom of their Staten Island home to admire their new pair of iPhone Xs just after they'd set up Face ID. Malik offered to let Ammar look at his phone instead, but the boy picked up his mother's, not knowing which was which. And a split second after he looked at it, the phone unlocked.
  • OnePlus 5T - A New View - OnePlus today announced the OnePlus 5T, an update to its 2017 flagship handset that adopts the 2:1 aspect ratio for the display. The new OLED screen measures 6 inches from corner to corner and includes 2,160 by 1,080 pixels. In order to accommodate the new display, OnePlus relocated the fingerprint reader to the rear of the phone. The device adds a facial recognition tool for security. OnePlus says it takes only 0.4 seconds to recognize the owner's face and unlock.
  • Germany Bans Children's Smartwatches - A German regulator has banned the sale of smartwatches aimed at children, describing them as spying devices. It had previously banned an internet-connected doll called, My Friend Cayla, for similar reasons. Telecoms regulator the Federal Network Agency urged parents who had such watches to destroy them. All I've got to say about that is.....dilly, dilly. Company's have got to fix their stuff when it comes to child safety.
  • The Tesla Semi Revealed - Despite some delays, as promised Elon Musk finally rolled in to reveal Tesla's new all-electric truck, the Tesla Semi. The big rig goes from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and tows a max load 80,000 lbs with an estimated range of 500 miles on the highway. A range of 400 miles can be had in 30 minutes on a single charge from solar powered "Megachargers" the company plans to build.
  • Bitcoin Passes $8,000 For the First Time in History - Just weeks after crossing the $7,000 milestone, bitcoin surged to a new all-time high on November 16, peaking at $8020 on the Bitfinex exchange. This marked the first time the cryptocurrency's value passed the $8,000 mark, though it dropped back down to $7,896 at the time of writing. Is bitcoin going to keep going up? Only time will tell, but it sure looks like it.
  • New York Court Says Police Must Get Warrant to Use Stingrays - Moving forward, New York law enforcement agencies will need to go before a judge and obtain an eavesdropping warrant if they wish to use stingrays to track suspects' cellphones. Stingrays spoof cell towers and fool cell phones into connecting with them. Police use them in cars or airplanes scanning entire neighborhoods seeking the phone of a single suspect. The issue is that the stingrays are imprecise and sweep up location, call, and messaging data of every cell phone in the vicinity. "The use of a cell-site simulator intrudes upon an individual's reasonable expectation of privacy, acting as an instrument of eavesdropping, and requires a separate warrant supported by probable cause," wrote the Brooklyn judge overseeing the case. The ruling mirrors one made in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Privacy advocates around the country are pushing back against the use of stingrays. According to the New York Civil Liberties Union, the NYPD used stingrays more than 1,000 times between 2008 and 2015, though generally only for the most serious offenses. The Brooklyn ruling will set the tone for cases involving the use of stingrays tried in New York

The Xbox One X is officially on sale at many different retail outlets but if you have been trying to get your hands and coming up empty-handed from retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and the like, you might want to give the Amazon Store a shot. Will you buy Xbox One X for Xmas?  In other news, I've had an opportunity to test HTC Vive roomscale VR device last week, and I’m phenomenally impressed. It’s a massive leap forward from the seated VR experiences of the Oculus Rift Developer Kits, and much closer to what I would consider "True" Virtual Reality. Now please gimme 4k resolution per eye and special gloves so I can feel the objects I see around me :-)
  • Elgato Gaming 4K60 Pro Trailer - The surprisingly-attractive card is Elgato's first 4K gaming device. At the top end, the 4K60 Pro can handle 4K capture at 60 FPS. That amount of data will chew through 1 GB of disk space per minute at the highest bitrate, though. Even if you're not capping at full 4K, the card has a lot to offer. Footage captured at 1920x1080 can be recorded at up to 240 FPS, and 2560x1440 footage can obtained at up to 144 FPS.
  • Experts can hack most CPUs since 2008 over USB - For some details, we'll have to wait, but what's known now is bad enough: Positive has confirmed that recent revisions of Intel's Management Engine (IME) feature Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) debugging ports that can be reached over USB. JTAG grants you pretty low-level access to code running on a chip, and thus we can now delve into the firmware driving the Management Engine.
  • The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Feature Focus - Althought this review don't say it, good old Windows 7 is still the best, as long as you keep close attention to what updates you are installing. Unfortunately, Microsoft took measures against the selective installation of updates, and recently releases those "update bundles", each of which contains all the updates and you definitely don't want on your machine, such as telemetry. Additionally, Microsoft colluded with hardware vendors to omit support for Windows 7 from their latest hardware driver packages. Granted, some might actually work, but it is usually hacky and not 100% operational :-(
  • Windows 10 free upgrade for assistive technologies ends Dec 31 -- Remember when Microsoft stopped offering its free upgrade to Windows 10 for older Windows 7 and 8.1 users in July last year? It had left an intentional loophole for users of assistive technologies to still upgrade for free. At the time, it was indefinite offer. Now, it appears the end of that deal is coming on December 31. In a stealthy update to its Windows 10 FAQ page, Microsoft said no-cost upgrade will expire at the end of the year. The new text was apparently added in the last update to the page on October 24. The change is also now reflected on Microsoft's Assistive Technologies page in the first paragraph. The original reason for the original delay was that Microsoft was planning to add more accessibility features to Windows 10 through the July Anniversary update last year. Since then, we have had accessibility addition in December Creators Update and last month's Fall Creators Update. So Microsoft obviously feels accessibility is where it needs to be for users that need it to make a Windows 10 choice. So if you qualify for assistive technologies, you better make your decision whether to upgrade before December 31.
  • PiJuice - The Portable Power Supply for Raspberry Pi - The PiJuice power supply comes with a Motorola BP7X 1820mAh phone battery.  This battery is easy to replace should you want to carry and extra battery for extensive applications. • iPhone X Has Been Jailbroken Already - Liang Chen of KeenLab has demonstrated a functional jailbreak for Apple's latest flagship device, which is iPhone X. The jailbreak was shown off during the recent POC2017 event in Seoul, South Korea, and was shown executing the jailbreak code on Apple's latest iOS 11.1.1 firmware which was released only yesterday. I bet there are a lot of Apple fans that would love to get their hands on this jailbreak. However, they're going to have to wait a bit because none of the information has been made public.
  • Apple Overhauls Clips App to Take Advantage of iPhone X TrueDepth - Apple has released an updated version of its Clips video application with new and fun tools to improve both the experience of using the app and the end results. The most exciting addition is Selfie Scenes, which takes advantage of the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone X to place the user inside a 360-degree, animated scene when recording selfies. The app includes 10 scenes created by Apple, such as landscapes, paintings, and spaceships from "Star Wars." iPhone X owners can put themselves in a scene and then pan around, viewing and recording themselves within the landscape. All users will be able to take advantage of new artistic effects that can turn photos or videos into watercolors, oil paintings, sketches, and other art styles in real-time. Clips gains access to more sticker and poster content from Disney, including "Star Wars" characters and Disney favorites such as Mickey Mouse. More than 20 new soundtracks can be used to accompany Clips recordings. Apple redesigned the user interface for Clips with streamlined controls that make it easier to find and use filters, labels, stickers, and emoji. Buttons have new labels, too, and a full-screen browser lets people see their entire project while editing and creating. Last, Clips gains support for iCloud. iPhone and iPad owners can store, access, and edit their Clips projects from any device, which is automatically saved to iCloud. Clips is free to download from the iTunes App Store.
  • Apple Pay Cash is now available - Back at WWDC in June when Apple announced iOS 11, it promised a new feature called Apple Pay Cash, which would allow users to send money to friends via iMessages. It wasn't ready for the iOS 11 launch in September - just like Messages in iCloud - and it got pushed back. The feature finally arrived today, for those that are currently running the iOS 11.2 and watchOS 4.2 betas. It should automatically show up in your Messages app, as long as you have Apple Pay set up and you're messaging someone that's also running the latest beta. You also need to have two-factor authentication set up on your Apple account. Unfortunately, Apple Pay Cash is still limited to the United States, although it's entirely possible that that's only while it's in beta. Presumably, the functionality will eventually roll out to all of the regions where Apple Pay is already supported. You'll need to be running the second beta of whichever OS you're using (iOS 11.2 or watchOS 4.2), and that includes the iOS public beta.
  • Apple Releases iOS 11.1.1 to Fix Keyboard Bug - Apple has made iOS 11.1.1 available to iPhone owners. The minor release primarily resolves a keyboard-based autocorrect bug that impacted the ability to type the letter "I", which was often replaced with an odd character. The software update also fixes a bug that cause "Hey Siri" to stop working. iOS 11.1.1 is free to download over the air.
  • Apple Releases iOS 11.1 With New Emoji, 3D Touch App Switcher ... - Apple has released iOS 11.1, the first major update to the iOS 11 operating system available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 11.1 comes more than a month after iOS 11 was first released to the public and its launch comes after several rounds of beta testing. The update is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the update, go to Settings --> General --> Software Update. Eligible devices include the iPhone 5s and later, the iPad mini 2 and later, the iPad Air and later, and the 6th-generation iPod touch. A range of new Unicode 10 emoji like crazy face, pie, pretzel, t-rex, vampire, exploding head, face vomiting, shushing face, love you gesture, brain, scarf, zebra, giraffe, fortune cookie, pie, hedgehog, and more have been introduced in the iOS 11 update, expanding the number of emoji available to iOS users. Along with these major features, iOS 11 introduces a fix for a Reachability bug that's been present since the release of iOS 11 and it brings back the popular 3D Touch App Switcher gesture that lets iPhone users perform a 3D Touch gesture at the left edge of the display to bring up the multitasking App Switcher interface. The built-in keyboard in iOS 11.1 now offers up multiple emoji symbols when using an emoji-related word, there's a new camera icon under Restrictions, a new animation when tapping the status bar to scroll upwards, and a faster unlock animation. There are also many bug fixes and security improvements in iOS 11.1. Most notably, the update addresses a major vulnerability in the WPA2 Wi-Fi standard that is used to protect many modern Wi-Fi networks. The exploit, which is now fixed, let attackers use a key reinstallation attack or "KRACK" to decrypt network traffic to sniff out sensitive information.
  • Samsung Reveals New Exynos 9 Processor and Camera Sensor - Samsung updated its Exynos 9 Series processor and also debuted a fresh camera sensor for smartphones. The Exynos 9 Series 9810 is a flagship-class application processor built on Samsung's second-generation 10nm FinFET process. It uses 10LPP (Low Power Plus) technology in conjunction with 3D transistors to improve speeds by about 10%, or power efficiency by about 15% when compared to Samsung's first-generation 10nm process. The 9810 also includes Samsung's latest LTE modem with support for six carrier aggregation (6CA). The Cat 18 6CA modem includes 4x4 MIMO and higher-order 256 QAM to tap into the high speeds available from technologies such as LTE-LAA. The 9810's modem is 20% faster than the one found in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ and can reach Gigabit LTE speeds. Samsung did not say what devices might be powered by the Exynos 9810. In addition to the processor, Samsung announced the ISOCELL Slim 2X7, a 24-megapixel image sensor with 0.9um pixels. The Slim 2X7 uses Tetracell and remosaic technology to reproduce the results that might come from larger pixels while keeping the sensor compact. Samsung says the sensor can be fitted into a thinner camera module, which may negate the need for a raised camera module on handsets. Samsung did not say what devices might eventually rely on the new imaging sensor.
  • Samsung Letting Galaxy S8 Owners Test Drive Android 8 - Samsung today said select customers will soon be able to beta test Samsung Experience 9.0 before its official release. The Samsung Experience, formerly called TouchWiz, is the user interface that Samsung created for its device ecosystem. Starting November 2, Galaxy S8 and S8+ users based in the U.S., U.K., and South Korea will have access to Samsung Experience 9.0, which is based on Android 8 Oreo. Samsung hopes to use the beta period to assess user feedback and fine-tune the platform before its release for "the next flagship Galaxy device." Interested beta testers will need to have an active Samsung account and meet certain (unspecified) requirements. Samsung said the beta may be distributed via the Samsung+ app in the U.S., which is available from the Google Play Store. People can apply to test Samsung Experience 9.0 through the app.
  • The All New BlackBerry Motion - Unstoppable - Although the firm previously released a video that showed off the handset's little details, the new video is more about showcasing the things that make this phone special. The smartphone is shown to be water and dust resistant, offering a premium anti-scratch display, and shows off the privacy screen that can keep those around you from peeping into your life. As the final cherry on top, the Motion offers up to 32+ hours of battery life from its 4,000mAh battery, which is quite a bit. As a quick refresher, the Motion has a 5.5-inch display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB RAM. It also has a 12MP camera on the rear, 8MP front-facing camera, and an IP67 rating to protect against dust and moisture. As mentioned before, it also packs a 4,000mAh battery that has support for Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0.

  • Bitcoin reached a new record of $7,300 before dipping - The most valuable cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has smashed a new record for itself and any other cryptocurrency. After passing the dizzying height of $6,000 it has now pressed on to reach a whopping $7,341.84 as of 12 PM UTC on Thursday. As of writing the price is just under the $7,000 threshold and has a market cap of $115,577,159,155, or over $115 billion. The latest gain adds credibility to claims made by speculators who believe that the cryptocurrency will reach $10,000 or even $50,000. We have seen how big of a hit Bitcoin takes, however, when countries like China restrict its circulation; a couple months back the price dramatically tumbled after the Chinese government shut down some exchanges and stopped the executives of those companies from leaving the country.
  • Osama bin Laden's hard drives contained video games - Back in 2015, four years after he was killed during a raid on his compound in Pakistan, the US government released a list of books and articles that were discovered in the hideout of Osama bin Laden. Yesterday, the CIA released almost 470,000 files that were found on his hard drives, which show he had a penchant for video games (many of them erotic), movies, viral YouTube videos, and anime. The total size of all the files reaches into the hundreds of gigabytes, but the archive has been split up into four categories-audio, documents, images, and video-to make searching through them easier. As you would expect, the CIA found terror-related material, such as training videos, Bin Laden's journal, and a clip of a beheading, but there was also plenty of unexpected content. Movies including Antz, Cars, Chicken Little, and Resident Evil were discovered. There was also a surprising amount of emulated DS titles like New Super Mario Bros and Animal Crossing, along with PC games Zuma Deluxe and Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army 2, a torrent for Army Men 2, images for Pac-Man and Perestroika Girls, Final Fantasy VII, and much more.

Razer today announced the Razer Phone, its first smartphone, with a focus on mobile gaming. The company bought NextBit, maker of the Robin phone, earlier this year and the Razer Phone was born from projects started at NextBit before the acquisition. The design is similar to the Robin in that it has a blocky shape and front-firing stereo speakers with independent amplifiers and a THX-certified DAC. The device boasts a number of firsts. To start, the 5.72-inch, wide-color gamut, IGZO LCD contains quad HD resolution and is the first display to refresh at a rate of 120 Hz (ideal for gaming). The Razer is also the first handset to ship with Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0, an enhanced version of the rapid-charging technology. Razer is pushing the phone’s pixels and polygons with a Snapdragon 835 processor with a whopping 8 GB of RAM. The phone has 64 GB of storage and supports microSD memory cards up to 2 TB. As for the camera, the phone has twin 12-megapixel cameras with PDAF and a two-tone, dual-LED flash. One camera has a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.75 and the other has a telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.6. An 8-megapixel, fixed-focus camera is located on front. A 4,000mAh battery provides plenty of power to keep games running for as long as possible. The phone runs Android 7 Nougat. Preorders kick off immediately. The Razer Phone will go on sale in the U.S. on November 17.

ASUS reveal GTX 1080 Ti Assassin's Creed Origins card - tech
(hx) 10:45 PM CET - Oct,30 2017 - Post a comment
ASUS rolled out a special variant of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card commemorating "Assassin's Creed: Origins." The card features a special cooler shroud with bronze-gold die-cast color forming the top half, and a groovy hieroglyph print with ROG and Assassin's Creed logos, on the back-plate, again in bronze-gold. The SKU includes a coupon to the standard edition of "Assassin's Creed: Origins," redeemable on UPlay. The card is otherwise identical to the ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC, including its out of the box clock speeds of 1569/1683 MHz (core/boost), and an untouched 11 GHz (GDDR5X-effective) memory. It also retains the RGB LED lighting along inserts on the cooler shroud, and the ROG logo on the back-plate. This card could be priced at a slight premium over the ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC.

(hx) 06:12 PM CET - Oct,30 2017 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released GeForce 388.13 WHQL software. These drivers are game-ready for the week's hottest AAA game releases, "Call of Duty: WWII," "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus," and "Need for Speed: Payback." This includes performance optimization, and GeForce Experience optimal settings. The drivers also add official support for the new GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card, which makes its market debut on the 2nd of November. The drivers also address a few bugs, including a rare issue with secondary displays blanking out on some systems, "Yellow bang appearing by the graphics entry in Device Manager," and momentary display corruption on notebooks with hybrid GPUs, in which the display is switching between the CPU-integrated and NVIDIA discrete GPUs.
Following the PC Open Beta, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software have made numerous changes to further improve the PC experience, and have updated their PC system requirements:

Call of Duty: WWII PC Recommended Spec

Assassin''s Creed: Origins Requires 8-Thread CPU - tech
(hx) 10:06 PM CET - Oct,29 2017 - Post a comment / read (6)
While four cores are usually sufficient for most games, Assassin’s Creed: Origins scales even on six cores. Tests performed by ComputerBase.de show that Intel’s 6-core, 12-thread Core i7-8700K, paired with an Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Strix OC, delivers the best performance in the game.
The flagship Coffee Lake CPU is 19% faster than the quad-core i7-7700K in 1920 × 1080, and delivers 12% better frametimes. This is a much bigger difference between the two than we’ve observed in other games.

AMD hardware, however, doesn’t seem to perform well in Assassin’s Creed Origins. At 1080p, their flagship Ryzen 7 1800X featuring 8 cores and 16 threads is slower than the 8700K, but can keep up with the Kaby Lake chip.

CPUs with less than eight threads will struggle in the latest Assassin’s Creed game. The Core i5-7600K for instance, which still has four cores as the i7-7700K but doesn’t support hyper-threading, is a whopping 27% slower than its elder sibling. The chip just runs out of breadth when it comes to frametimes with 38% slower results.

  • Google Pixel Phones Have Hidden Image Processor - Google today revealed the Pixel Visual Core, a custom-designed co-processor that is built into every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphone. The Image Processing Unit has eight cores, each with 512 arithmetic logic units (ALUs) that can handle some three trillion calculations per second. Google claims the Pixel Visual Core with HDR+ can run five times faster and at less than one-tenth the energy than running directly on the application processor. The Pixel Visual Core is laying dormant for the time being, but Google says it will turn the co-processor on soon. Google created advanced software to manage the Pixel's ability to capture rich photos and it wants to extend that to other photo apps. The Pixel Visual Core will eventually allow third-party apps to use the Pixel's HDR+ technology. Google plans to enable the Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in the developer preview of Android Oreo 8.1 (MR1) in the coming weeks. Later, Google will let third-party camera apps access it using the Android Camera API, giving them access to the Pixel 2's HDR+ technology. Nvidia has unveiled the pricing, specs, and release date for its upcoming graphics card the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. According to the manufacturer, the card is an excellent alternative to the GTX 1070 with nearly identical performance when compared to the GTX 1080. The GTX 1070 Ti is being marketed as a mid-step option for those who want something more powerful than the GTX 1070, but cannot afford the more costly GTX 1080. Currently, Nvidia has opened up pre-orders for the GTX 1070 Ti with the Founders Edition which launches at $449 — $50 less than the GTX 1080. On top of that, the original 1070 has seen a price drop, bringing it down to $399. The small price discrepancy between the GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, and GTX 1080 are prompting prospecting purchasers to speculate this release is aimed at the growing demand for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining, rather than solely gaming. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is set to be released on November 2, 2017

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is now available - tech
(hx) 09:54 PM CEST - Oct,17 2017 - Post a comment
Microsoft's Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is here and ready to download. The software giant first started testing its Fall Creators Update back in April, and now all Windows 10 users will be able to experience the improvements today. Just like previous updates, Microsoft is rolling it out in stages, and you can check whether it’s available for your own PC from Windows Update. If your device is eligible then it will start downloading in the background, and a prompt will appear to schedule a time to install. If your device isn’t on the list, then that doesn’t mean you can’t skip the line. You can manually update to the Fall Creators Update over at Microsoft’s Windows 10 site. Simply click the “update now” button and proceed with the upgrade assistant. You can also download ISO images of the final copy of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update should you want to clean install it on your PC. The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is version 1709.

The Windows 10 Creators Update will improve Game Mode. This mode promises to allow players’ games to use the full processing power of their device as if it was an Xbox game console. This mode has been available in Windows 10 for a while, and the performance improvements it introduced were minimal. This mode will most probably be useful to those with really dated systems. Therefore, we’ll simulate a dual-core system and we’ll run some benchmarks in order to see whether the gaming experience is improved with Game Mode. The Windows 10 Fall Creators update will also introduce two new anti-cheat tools: Game Monitor and TruePla

  • Photonic Microchips Use DVD-like Tech - Scientists have made a crucial step towards unlocking the "holy grail" of computing - microchips that mimic the way the human brain works to store and process information. A research team, including Professor C. David Wright from the University of Exeter, have made a pioneering breakthrough by developing photonic computer chips - that use light rather than electricity - that imitate the way the brain's synapses operate. Professor Harish Bhaskaran from Oxford University and who led the team said "The development of computers that work more like the human brain has been a holy grail of scientists for decades. Via a network of neurons and synapses the brain can process and store vast amounts of information simultaneously, using only a few tens of Watts of power. Conventional computers can't come close to this sort of performance."
  • Why are Apple's chips faster than Qualcomm's? - On paper, the multi-core result of the hexa-core A11 is 50 percent faster than the octa-core Snapdragon 835. As I mentioned above though, Geekbench doesn't test other parts of the SoC. Things like the DSP, the ISP and any AI-related functions will influence the day-to-day experience of any devices using these processors. However, when it comes to raw CPU speed, the A11 is the clear winner. This can be a bit hard for Android fans to stomach. So what is the reason? First we need a bit of a history lesson.

  • Firefox officially gets end-of-support date on Windows XP and Vista - For those still clinging to Windows XP and Vista, the list of companies willing to support these ailing operating systems is ever growing thin by the day. Mozilla has joined the likes of Microsoft and Google in officially announcing its end-of-support date for the Firefox browser on either operating systems, which has been a life-line to those users who haven't upgraded yet. Yesterday, the company announced that it will end the 'Firefox Extended Support Release' program on June 2018, terminating any future updates or security patches from that point on. Microsoft ended support for Windows XP back in 2014, prompting users to upgrade to a more recent release of Windows through a pop-up box, in addition to terminating support for Windows Vista earlier this year. In 2015, Google announced that Chrome - the most popular web browser - would lose support for both of these aging operating systems in 2016, including several older versions of macOS.

  • Pixel/Pixel XL Will Have Unlimited Original Uploads to Photos for Life - Google went out of its way to put a expiration date on unlimited photo uploads for the new Pixel 2s, but a representative has clarified that nothing is changing for the original Pixels. Both the 2016 Pixel and 2016 Pixel XL will continue to receive free unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos with no time limitations. That means the free unlimited original photo storage on the Pixel 2 isn't quite as good as the deal that was previously offered. Thankfully, Google also reaffirmed that photos taken with the Pixel 2 wouldn't be changed after 2020, they will always be accessible at the original quality, and after 2020 unlimited uploads will still be allowed at a slightly lower "high-quality." So, there you have it. If you were worried about your OG Pixel losing its unlimited original quality uploads, there's no reason to fret.

  • Microsoft Exec Says Windows Mobile Is Basically Done - Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore on Sunday explained in a series of Tweets that the company is no longer creating new software or hardware for its Windows Mobile platform. Belfiore was responding directly to questions posed by fans when he said, "Many companies still deploy [Windows Phone] to their employees and we will support them! Of course we'll continue to support the platform ... bug fixes, security updates, etc. But building new features/[hardware] aren't the focus," Belfiore admitted that he, like Microsoft founder and former CEO Bill Gates, has switched to Android. "As an individual end-user, I switched platforms for the app/hw diversity." The questions put to Belfiore arose due to Microsoft's recent move to expand its Edge browser to to iOS. The browser is in beta mode via the App Store. Microsoft has focused much of its mobile app efforts on the Android and iOS platforms in recent years with its Office productivity suite, Skype communications tool, Android Launcher, OneDrive, and more. In the end, apps became the problem for Windows 10. "We have tried very hard to incent app [developers]. Paid money ... wrote apps for them ... but volume of users is too low for most companies to invest," wrote Belfiore. With no real selection of apps, Windows Mobile didn't have much of a chance against the Android and iOS platforms, which each offers more than one billion apps available to end users.
  • Google's New Pixel Phones to Ship with Embedded eSIM - Google has revealed that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets will include an optional, built-in eSIM card, allowing people to bypass the use of traditional SIM cards. According to Google, the eSIMs will be compatible with its own Project Fi service. During initial setup, owners will be asked if they want to use the embedded eSIM. Google says it will do the heavy lifting of activating the eSIM on its network. This means you no longer need to go to a store to get a SIM card for wireless service, wait a few days for your card to arrive in the mail, or fumble around with a bent paper clip to coax your SIM card into a tiny slot, explained Google in a blog post. For now, the eSIM is being tested on the new Pixel handsets only. Users will have to purchase the Pixel directly from the Play Store or Project Fi to take advantage of the eSIM. Both phones include a standard slot for nano SIM cards.

Nvidia GeForce 387.92 WHQL driver - tech
(hx) 09:16 PM CEST - Oct,09 2017 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the GeForce 387.92 Game Ready Graphics Drivers, which presents a more comprehensive package than most Game Ready drivers. This time, the changes aren't mostly limited to new, upcoming games support, though that's still part of the package. On that front, you can count on these drivers being optimized for the upcoming Middle-earth: Shadow of War and The Evil Within 2, as well as Forza Motorsport 7, on which NVIDIA expects anywhere between 15% and 25% performance improvement (which should help improve NVIDIA's situation). On the VR space, this driver package brings the optimal experience for 4A Games' Artika.1 (if you recognize the studios' name, it's probably because they're the ones behind the Metro game series. Also interesting, however, are the feature updates that come with this driver package. Fast Sync is now supported for SLI configurations, though Maxwell architecture users should steer clear of 4K resolution, which isn't supported for this feature. There's also NVIDIA GameStream support for HDR under Windows 10. On the renderer side, we see added support for OpenGL 4.6, as well as for DirectX Intermediate Language (DXIL). This includes full support for DirectX 12 Shader Model 6.0 ( for features such as Wavemath), and the DirectX Shader Compiler, though it's only supported on NVIDIA Kepler and later GPUs. There are also some improvements to full-screen Vulkan applications, though this particular change may cause more errors while leaving and entering full-screen mode (Alt-Tab).

Western Digital announced it has begun providing cloud and hyperscale data center customers with the world's first 14-terabyte hard drive, through its HGST subsidiary. The HGST Ultrastar HS14 offers 40 percent more capacity and twice the sequential write performance of its shingled magnetic recording (SMR) predecessor. It also gives WD temporary bragging rights.
Based on host-managed shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology, this 3.5-inch hard drive helps address Big Data challenges and the emerging sequential write workload segment in the data center. Optimized to deliver the highest capacity at low total cost of ownership (TCO), the Hs14 provides unprecedented capacity leadership by harnessing two core complementary technologies -- 4th generation HelioSeal technology and 2nd-generation host-managed SMR. These field proven technologies provide the foundation for delivering efficiency, quality and reliable performance required by cloud and hyperscale data centers.

Intel unveils its 8th gen Core processors - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Sep,26 2017 - Post a comment / read (3)
Intel has issued an official press release in which the company claimed that its new 8th generation desktop CPUs will be up to 25% faster than its 7th generation desktop CPUs in multi-threaded games. The new family of Core processors will initially have six SKUs; three of them are unlocked and can be overclocked with a supported motherboard. The top of the line i7-8700K and i7-8700 have six cores and 12 threads. The i5 variants: i5-8400 and i5-8600k also have six cores but lack hyper-threading. While lower-end i3 CPUs have usually featured hyper-threading, this time around, Intel has decided to ditch it in favor of the updated core counts. The new processors are based on Intel's 14nm FinFET process introduced with Skylake. Compared to previous generations, the new 14nm++ architecture provide better boost clocks and multitasking capability. However, the updated core counts come with a penalty: base clocks are marginally lower compared to Kaby Lake CPUs. Although according to Intel, this shouldn't be an issue; the company claims Coffee Lake CPUs will perform 25 percent better in FPS games than their predecessors. The additional physical cores and threads should also perform better under multithreaded workloads. Intel is also launching a new chipset with its latest processors called Z370. This will introduce a better power delivery system for the new CPUs; native support for 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM and Thunderbolt 3 is also on board. Intel says its new platform will not be backward compatible with older Skylake and Kaby Lake, so people who want to upgrade to Coffee Lake, will have to buy new motherboards. With Coffee Lake, Intel is finally bringing six-core processors to mainstream desktop PCs. Whether this is a proper reply to AMD's recent success, time will tell.

It appears that the first third-party gaming benchmarks have been leaked online. Expreview has tested Intel’s latest CPU with both default and overclock frequencies.

How Much Money Can Pirate Bay Make? - tech
(hx) 11:19 PM CEST - Sep,24 2017 - Post a comment / read (6)
How much money can a site like The Pirate Bay make through mining? TorrentFreak did some back-of-the-envelope calculations, starting with the site's visitor numbers (roughly 315 million visits per month) and ultimately found that TPB could get $12,000 a month based on the miner used, Coinhive, which pays out 0.00015 XMR per 1M hashes.
SimilarWeb estimates that The Pirate Bay has roughly 315 million visits per month. On average, users spend five minutes on the site per "visit". While we have reason to believe that this underestimates the site’s popularity, we’ll use it as an illustration.

We spoke to Coinhive and they estimate that a user with a mid-range laptop would have a hashrate of 30 h/s.

In Pirate Bay’s case this would translate to 30 hashes * 300 seconds * 315M visits = 2,835,000M hashes per month. If the miner is throttled at 30% this would drop to 850,000M hashes.

If Coinhive pays out 0.00015 XMR per million hashes, TPB would get 127.5 XMR per month, which is roughly $12,000 at the moment. Since the miner doesn’t appear on all pages and because some may actively block it, this number will drop a bit further.

Keep in mind that this is just an illustration using several estimated variables which may vary greatly over time. Still, it gives a broad idea of the potential.
