  • Microsoft Releases $189 Laptops For Schools - Microsoft is unveiling 10 new Windows 10 devices for schools starting at $189, challenging the Chromebook to keep teachers and students using Windows. The least expensive if the group is the Lenovo 100e, which is an 11.6" rugged laptop, with an unspecified Intel Celeron Apollo Lake processor, 2 or 4 GB of LP-DDR4, 32-64GB of eMMC storage, and weighing in a 2.7 lbs. Affordable laptops isn't the only thing that Microsoft is announcing today for schools. They also go into free Professional Development for schools using Microsoft 365 Education, to train teachers how to get the most from the new technology. As well as additional learning tools, Minecraft: Education Edition, a curriculum using Mixed Reality and HoloLens, and more. It makes sense to get kids into the Windows environment as early as possible from a business standpoint to get them into the ecosystem early, although that didn't work with me and the Apple II's my school had.
  • Integral Debuts 512 GB MicroSD Card - Integral has announced what is the world's first 512 GB microSD card for smartphones, tablets, cameras, and other devices. Until this week, the highest-capacity card, 400 GB, was sold by SanDisk. Integral's new offering, called the 512 GB microSDXC V10 UHS-I U1 card, includes Class 10 high-speed video transfers for capturing HD video and writing it directly to the memory card. The card is robust, meaning it is waterproof, and it ships with an SD card reader so it may be used with PCs. Most of today's flagship Android devices support cards up to 2 TB, though no such cards yet exist. Integral said its new 512 GB microSD card will reach stores in February, but it did not reveal pricing. By way of comparison, SanDisk's 400 GB card retails for $250.
  • Microsoft Is Retiring the Windows Homegroup - With the latest Windows Insider build of Windows 10, Microsoft has killed off "Windows HomeGroup." Originally a part of Windows 7 in 2009 and continuing until now, HomeGroup was a way to share files and devices between computers on your network. This change will go live in the Spring 2018 update to Windows 10.vReally does not phase me at all, except I'm happy to have less bloat on my machines. The handful of times I've tried to use HomeGroup it simply failed miserably compared to just sharing over the network without it. Quote below is from Microsoft's Blog post on Insider Build 17063.
  • Chrome to Support HDR Video Playback - Google today provided an update on the progress it has made with the Chrome browser over the last year and offered a peek at some features that will arrive later this year. To start, Chrome now supports play/pause, rewind, and fast forward controls for audio and video. The browser handles picture-in-picture playback on Android, and improved audio/video controls on both the lock screen and notification shade. The browser is able to mute web sites and soon will let people customize which sites are allowed to autoplay audio and video content. Google has already begin adding support for high dynamic range video content to Chrome for Windows 10 devices, and will expand HDR video playback to more platforms soon. HDR content of course offers more vibrant colors and darker blacks. Last, Google is prepared for the official release of virtual reality on the web, which it has been testing for the better part of a year. Google said HDR video and VR are coming to Chrome later this year. HDR and HDR+ content can be played back on a handful of smartphones, such as the LG V30 and the Samsung Galaxy Note8.
  • Google's Bulletin App Lets Everyone Be a Local Reporter - Google is testing a new application called Bulletin, a way for people to contribute stories about their own community. The free app lets people capture photos, videos, and text on their phone and then publish those microstories directly to the web without forcing people to create a blog or build any sort of web site. Google believes Bulletin can help communities highlight stories that aren't be told in regional newspapers or larger news sites. Stories published on Bulletin are public and easy to find via Google Search, social networks, and direct links. Bulletin relies on smartphones and no setup is necessary. The idea is to let more people share in creating the voice of their community. Google is testing Bulletin via limited pilots in Nashville, Tenn., and Oakland, Calif. People who live in those markets can request early access to the program.

Apple also released macOS 10.13.3, watchOS 4.2.2, tvOS 11.2.5, and macOS Server 5.5. The macOS update, in particular, patches significant security holes, while the others perform general bug fixes.
  • iPhone SE 2 Rumored For Late Spring Launch - Previous rumors claimed that the iPhone SE 2 will feature Apple's A10 Fusion SoC (which was used on the 2016-era iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus), 2GB of RAM and a larger 1,700 mAh battery (up from 1,624 mAh for the current iPhone SE). Windows 10 update will reveal what data Microsoft is collecting - tech
(hx) 11:48 PM CET - Jan,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (4)
When Windows 10 was first released, the OS was received well enough on its merits but users were quick to voice concerns regarding Microsoft's new data collection measures, some of which could not easily be turned off. In October 2017, the Dutch data protection authority claimed Windows 10 violated local privacy laws. The year prior, France's data protection commission voiced similar concerns and ordered the software giant to "stop collecting excessive user data" without consent. Microsoft has taken steps to address these concerns -- including the implementation of a "privacy dashboard" -- but they haven't managed to silence them entirely. Microsoft will soon be offering Windows 10 users a new level of transparency in an upcoming OS update. The update will include the "Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer" feature which will let users see exactly what data the company is collecting about them. According to The Verge, Microsoft collects data regarding your peripherals, movie consumption habits, installed apps and more. This update will be made available to Windows 10 Insiders sometime this week but there's no word on when it will be launching for everyone else.
Intel Spectre&Meltdown fixes=complete&utter garbage - tech

Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, has bashed Intel's Spectre and Meltdown fixes. In a public email exchange, Torvalds called Intel's fixes "complete and utter carbage" and wondered what the fuck was going on.
The patches do things like add the garbage MSR writes to the kernel entry/exit points. That's insane. That says "we're trying to protect the kernel". We already have retpoline there, with less overhead.

All of this is pure garbage. Is Intel really planning on making this shit architectural? Has anybody talked to them and told them they are f*cking insane? Please, any Intel engineers here - talk to your managers.

TechNews - Best Gaming CPUs - tech
(hx) 11:29 PM CET - Jan,20 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Best Gaming CPUs - For most high-end gamers, the flagship mainstream models in Intel's Core i7 and AMD's Ryzen 7 product families offer the best value. Intel's Coffee and Kaby Lake models offer the best absolute gaming performance, but AMD's Ryzen 7 series comes with more cores, which you might find attractive if you have more demanding requirements, such as streaming or intense multi-tasking. You can also often find the Ryzen processors well below MSRP.
  • NVIDIA Wants Retailers to Sell GeForce GPUs to Gamers, Not Miners - NVIDIA has publicized some of their thoughts on the GPU pricing situation: speaking with ComputerBase, spokesman Boris Bohles thinks that gamers, not miners, are more deserving of their products and that retailers should better meet their needs. There is no indication that NVIDIA will actually engage trading partners to ensure this happens, however.
  • Dell XPS 15 2-In-1 W/ Intel 8th Gen & AMD Radeon RX Vega - Needless to say, graphics performance definitely looks promising for these new 8th generation Intel Core processors with AMD graphics.
  • Windows 8.1 Mainstream Support Ends - Windows 8.1 has now moved into the Extended Support phase of its lifecycle, which means that customers can no longer request to have changes made to the OS or add new features. Non-security updates are only available with Extended Hotfix Support, and complimentary support from Microsoft gives way to paid support options. About the only good thing about Extended Support is that security updates will continue to be pushed out to Windows 8.1 systems. According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 Extended Support will end five years from today, on January 10th, 2023. At that point, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates (except in extremely rare situations).
  • Google's Fuchsia OS on the Pixelbook: It works! It actually works! - It's worth mentioning, once again, that Fuchsia probably has a long way to go. Android took five years at Google to become a consumer operating system, while Fuchsia has only been in development for about two years. For a few reasons, Fuchsia might even take longer than Android to hit version 1.0. By all accounts Android's initial development was a rush job at Google, as the company hurriedly tried to whip together an answer to the headline-grabbing first-gen iPhone. Today, Google has more than 80 percent of the smartphone OS marketshare, so it has no reason to rush Fuchsia out the door.
  • MacBook Users Claim Apple Overstates Standby Battery Life - Reports on Apple's Support Communities and other discussion groups suggest that MacBooks are not living up to their promise of "up to 30 days standby time." Their batteries are supposedly draining at 2 to 10 times the normal rate during standby, leaving the laptops dead after only 3 to 15 days. Apple is calling this 'normal behavior.' Reaching out to Apple CEO Tim Cook directly, Antoniou said he was contacted by spokesperson Shane Barton, who told him that "there was nothing wrong with [the battery] according to Apple," and "even blocked the local Apple store from letting me pay for a new battery."
  • iPhone X Reported to Have Overheating Problems - It's been reported that several customers over in the Apple forums are stating that their iPhone X is overheating for no reason at all. Some have said they even put the phone in the freezer to cool it down and that didn't help. At this point in time it's too soon to say this is a wide-spread issue, but it's worth keeping an eye on. Also, beside the overheating issue, some users are beginning to suspect Apple is using some kind of enhancement that uses the cellular connection for some reason even if they have wifi turned on and connected. In addition to the overheating, some iPhone X owners are also starting to believe that Apple's new device uses a lot more cellular data than earlier models and that iPhone X "has enhancements that might use cellular data regardless of a wifi connection." Apple hasn't provided any insight into what those "enhancements" are or if they can be turned off but it could be quite worrying for individuals with low data tariffs who ensure that they stay connected to WiFi to stay within their data limitations.
  • Intel AMT security hole lets hackers take control of corporate laptops - The way the attack is accomplished is by rebooting the computer and then entering the boot menu. In most circumstances, this is the end of the line for an attacker because any competent IT pro would have enabled the BIOS password and the exploit could go no further. However, on AMT machines, the attacker can select Intel's Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) and log in using the default password 'admin.'
  • World's most powerful mobile spyware can read WhatsApp messages - Security firm Kaspersky has uncovered a new Android spyware tool that's being described as one of the most powerful and advanced forms of mobile malware ever. Named after one of the domains where it was first identified, Skygofree can perform a number of malicious activities, including recording audio and reading WhatsApp messages. While Kaspersky discovered Skygofree in late 2017, it's been around and evolving since 2014. What makes the spyware particularly insidious is the way it's distributed through fake sites designed to look like those from mobile carriers. The tool is advertised as a piece of software designed to increase the internet speeds of anyone who downloads it.
  • iOS Update to Let iPhone Owners Keep Phones Running Fast - Apple plans to give iPhone owners more control over their devices, particularly the battery and performance, says CEO Tim Cook. Speaking to ABCNews, Cook addressed the issue concerning older iPhone batteries. The company admitted late last year that it slows down the performance of some devices in order to prevent them from shutting down. End users often complain that their devices feel slow after updating the software.
  • Google Sends Security Patch to Pixel Phones - Google has sent a fresh security patch to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets. Google says the update "fixes critical bugs and improves the performance and stability" of the Pixel smartphones. The update is about 50 MB and can be downloaded over the air. Google normally issues security patches at the beginning of each month. This mid-month update is atypical. Google has also begun distributing Google Play Services 11.9.74 beta, which contains fixes for the Chromecast WiFi-sapping bug revealed earlier this week. The Play Services update is being pushed in limited numbers. Google hasn't said when the final version of Play Services 11.9.74, with the Chromecast patch, will reach all devices.
  • Google Rolling Out Fix For Wi-Fi Killing Bug - In a post on a Google Home Help page, Google has announced they have identified the bug that was causing many users' router to be hammered with requests and subsequently freezing. These issues were most commonly reported by those who own a TP-Link Archer C7 router. Though initial user reports suggested it was strictly TP-Link routers that had these issues, Android Police has since found that users with Linksys and Synology routers have faced similar problems. If you were unlucky enough to be affected by one or more of these issues, you won't need to toss your Chromecast or Google Home device out just yet as Google is on the case. Today, the company started rolling out updates via Google Play services that should address these issues entirely. If the update is taking a while to hit your device, you can opt to download the Google Play Services 11.9.74 beta APK to get access to the fix ASAP.
  • Cisco can now sniff out malware inside encrypted traffic - Cisco has switched on latent features in its recent routers and switches, plus a cloud service, that together make it possible to detect the fingerprints of malware in encrypted traffic. Those devices can't do the job alone: users need to sign up for Cisco's StealthWatch service and let traffic from their kit flow to a cloud-based analytics service that inspects traffic and uses self-improving machine learning algorithms to spot dodgy traffic.
  • OnePlus Confirms 40,000 Customers' Data at Risk - OnePlus has said up to 40,000 customers' credit card data may have been lifted in an attack. Earlier this week, OnePlus customers reported fraudulent activity on their credit cards after making purchases from OnePlus' web site. OnePlus says its investigation shows the company was indeed compromised.
  • Twitter Looks at Your DMs and Saves those for Later - Project Veritas has released undercover footage of Twitter Engineers and employees admitting that Twitter employees view all of your private messages on their servers and analyze it to create a "virtual profile" of you which they sell to advertisers. The footage features four current Twitter software engineers–Conrado Miranda, Clay Haynes, Pranay Singh, and Mihai Alexandru Florea.
  • YouTube Announces Stricter Criteria For Monetization - YouTube has announced today that moving forward it wi be tougher to get a partnership and run ads on videos. Previously, channels had to reach 10,000 total views to be eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Starting today, new channels will need to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months to be eligible for ads. We will begin enforcing these new requirements for existing channels in YPP beginning February 20th, 2018.
  • Amazon Raises Price of Prime Monthly Memberships by Nearly 20 Percent - If you pay for Amazon Prime on a monthly basis, be prepared to spend a little more: the fee is increasing from $10.99 to $12.99 ($156 a year). The annual $99 option is seeing no changes, but it may just be a matter of time before that goes up, too, as Amazon continues to introduce more and more benefits.

  • Fully autonomous, manual control-free vehicles by 2019 - GM recently filed a Safety Petition with the Department of Transportation, asking for permission to "safely deploy self-driving [vehicles] in 2019." The vehicle GM plans to deploy, dubbed the Cruise AV, will reportedly be the "first production-ready vehicle built from the start to operate safely on its own." The company released a short video offering us a sneak peek at what the vehicle may look like when it rolls out of GM's factories. Not only will the vehicle reportedly be capable of driving itself, it doesn't have any manual controls at all - there's no steering wheel and no brake or gas pedals to be seen. Designing a vehicle from the ground up with full automation in mind is a bold move, given that the company has yet to receive approval to deploy the vehicle to begin with, but one that could usher in the age of full autonomy much more quickly if it proves successful.

Intel's security fixes cause reboot issues - tech
(hx) 09:34 AM CET - Jan,13 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel has released some security firmware updates for its CPUs in order to address the Meltdown and Spectre issues that affect its processors. However, it appears that these updates cause reboot issues on Broadwell and Haswell PC configurations. As Intel noted, Intel Broadwell and Haswell configurations – for both client and data center – experience higher system reboots after applying the new firmware security updates.
We have received reports from a few customers of higher system reboots after applying firmware updates. Specifically, these systems are running Intel Broadwell and Haswell CPUs for both client and data center. We are working quickly with these customers to understand, diagnose and address this reboot issue. If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels.  We are also working directly with data center customers to discuss the issue.
Intel concludes that end-users should continue to apply updates recommended by their system and operating system providers. As such, we strongly recommend applying the software updates that Microsoft and Windows will list for your systems, however, you should hold your horses when it comes to firmware updates.

As a bonus, here is a graph from Intel showing the performance hit that its security updates for Meltdown and Spectre will bring to various Intel processors.

  • Intel's first chip with AMD graphics is the Core i7-8809G - Intel and AMD in November shocked some in the hardware world by announcing a partnership that'll see the two chipmakers collaborate on future mobile CPUs with integrated graphics. Now, thanks to an overclocking page on Intel's India portal, we've got some additional details to go on. A new chip recently surfaced on the site, the Core i7-8809G. According to the listing, the silicon in question is a quad-core part with eight threads that carries a target TDP of 100W. Also mentioned is a clock speed of 3.1GHz, 8MB of L3 cache and support for dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory. Under the "Graphics" column, Intel has listed support for Intel HD Graphics 630 and the Radeon RX Vega M GH Graphics
  • Meltdown and Spectre: 'worst ever' CPU bugs affect virtually all computers - Serious security flaws that could let attackers steal sensitive data, including passwords and banking information, have been found in processors designed by Intel, AMD and ARM. The flaws, named Meltdown and Spectre, were discovered by security researchers at Google's Project Zero in conjunction with academic and industry researchers from several countries. Combined they affect virtually every modern computer, including smartphones, tablets and PCs from all vendors and running almost any operating system. Meltdown is "probably one of the worst CPU bugs ever found", said Daniel Gruss, one of the researchers at Graz University of Technology who discovered the flaw. Meltdown is currently thought to primarily affect Intel processors manufactured since 1995, excluding the company’s Itanium server chips and Atom processors before 2013. The Spectre flaw affects most modern processors made by a variety of manufacturers, including Intel, AMD and those designed by ARM, and potentially allows hackers to trick otherwise error-free applications into giving up secret information. Spectre is harder for hackers to take advantage of but is also harder to fix.
  • Apple Says Chip Flaws Impact All iOS and Mac Devices - Apple has verified that many of its laptops, tablets, and smartphones are compromised by the security issues known as Meltdown and Spectre. These exploits take advantage of a modern CPU tool called speculative execution, which allows processors to predict where instructions will travel. Hackers could use certain techniques to manipulate speculative execution in order to access privileged memory, such as that of the kernel. Apple says the vulnerabilities are found in all modern processors and touch nearly every computing device and operating system, including its Mac computers, iPads, and iPhones. However, Apple has already mitigated the issue via recent system updates. For example, iOS 11.2 for iPhones and iPads, macOS 10.13.2 for Mac computers, and tvOS 11.2 for the Apple TV defend against these exploits. Apple has a release planned for Safari that will help protect Macs against the Spectre vulnerability. The company will continue to monitor the exploit and test further updates to keep Meltdown and Spectre at bay. There are no known exploits of either Meltdown or Spectre.
  • Western Digital My Cloud drives have a built-in backdoor - Intel has issued a press release, claiming that it will release updates for more than 90 percent of its processor products introduced within the past five years. Moreover, the blue team has already issued updates for the majority of processor products introduced within the past five years. Intel also claimed that the performance impact for the average user is not significant.
  • Linux Mint project sheds light on next big update - With the recent release of Linux Mint 18.3, attention has now shifted to the Linux Mint 19.x series which will represent the biggest update the Linux distribution will have seen since 2016. The first of the four releases of the new series, simply known as Linux Mint 19, will be dubbed Tara and all subsequent releases of the series should also begin with the letter T with the second letter going further through the alphabet for each release, for example, the Linux Mint 18 releases were called Sarah, Serena, Sonya, and Sylvia. Aside from the new name, the team have given us a timeframe to expect the new release, which version of Ubuntu it will be based on, how long it's supported for, and which version of GTK it is built upon. As we already knew from previous release cycles, Linux Mint 19.x will be based on an LTS release, namely the yet-to-be released Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 'Bionic Beaver' which is due in April. The new Mint series will closely follow the Ubuntu release and drop in May or June. Mint 19 will be supported for the same length of time as Ubuntu, meaning users will receive updates for a hefty five years until 2023. As a reminder, the Linux Mint 17 series releases are supported until 2019 and the Linux Mint 18 series is supported until 2021.
  • GNOME 3.28 Removes Option to Put Icons on the Desktop - Starting with version 3.28, GNOME users will have to seek an alternative way to display and manage files and folders. According to developer Ernestas Kulik, the team is scrubbing the "desktop" feature because it is impeding the progress of the overall environment.
  • Edge browser is still giving you more battery life than Chrome - What happens when three identical devices run different browsers? The Microsoft Edge team wanted to find out. This experiment showed that battery life on a PC running Microsoft Edge lasts 63% longer than Mozilla Firefox and 19% longer than Google Chrome.
  • OnePlus Slots New Oreo Betas for the 5 and 5T Smartphones - OnePlus has made Android 8 Oreo available to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T smartphones in new betas. Specifically, the OnePlus 5 gains access to OxygenOS Open Beta 3, which adds the face unlock feature of the 5T. Other changes in the beta include a new app shortcut in the launcher, changes to the vibrate alert, improved 5G WiFi performance, general bug fixes, and the December security patch. Beyond the standard Oreo features, the 5T will see a new shortcut style and an option for combining app icons and shortcuts. The 5T beta also installs the latest December security patch. Last, OnePlus is offering incremental software updates to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones, which add support for aptX HD, a WiFi hotspot manager, and the December security patch. Owners of the OnePlus 5 and 5T will need to enroll in OnePlus' open beta program to gain access to those downloads. The incremental updates for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are available to all owners.
  • Nissan Unveils Brain-to-Vehicle Driving Technology - Nissan has unveiled a new technology today they call Brain-to-Vehicle and it sounds like a doozy of a technology. BtV will interpret signals from the brain and help the vehicle better predict a movement that the driver would like to initiate - such as pushing the accelerator or hitting the brakes. They expect this to reduce reaction times and improve the safety of the vehicle. Also, the tech will detect whether a driver is comfortable while the car is in autonomous mode and adjust the driving style or configuration on the fly. Overall, this tech is really fascinating and should seriously improve the safety of their vehicles. Yet again, an excellent use of AI. Other possible uses include adjusting the vehicle's internal environment, said Dr. Lucian Gheorghe, senior innovation researcher at the Nissan Research Center in Japan, who's leading the B2V research. For example, the technology can use augmented reality to adjust what the driver sees and create a more relaxing environment
  • Major Banks Reportedly Just Began Freezing Accounts of Bitcoin Users - Adding to the pressures on bitcoin early this morning, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that bitcoin users across Australia are reporting that their accounts have been abruptly frozen by the country's "Big Four" banks. And while the banks have remained largely tight-lipped about the closures, many angry account-holders are jumping to conclusions and blaming the banks for punishing them because of their involvement with bitcoin. According to the Herald, cryptocurrency trader and Youtuber Alex Saunders called out National Australia Bank, ANZ, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation on Twitter for freezing customer accounts and transfers to four different bitcoin exchanges - CoinJar, CoinSpot, CoinBase and BTC Markets. In response, some users complained that their activities with the cryptocurrency had still been described as a "security risk by their financial institutions. While not every bank had explicit policies governing their relationship with cryptocurrencies, according to the Morning Herald, Commonwealth Bank's June 2017 terms and conditions for CommBiz accounts specifically excludes this activity, saying it can refuse to process an international money transfer or an international cash management transaction "because the destination account previously has been connected to a fraud or an attempted fraudulent transaction or is an account used to facilitate payments to Bitcoins or similar virtual currency payment services.

Intel has already issued updates for the majority of processor products introduced within the past five years. By the end of next week, Intel expects to have issued updates for more than 90 percent of processor products introduced within the past five years. In addition, many operating system vendors, public cloud service providers, device manufacturers and others have indicated that they have already updated their products and services.”
Update: As Epic Games showcased, the CPU utilization of one of its gaming servers sky-rocketed from 25% to almost 60%. That’s a really big performance hit and it is something that may affect gamers worldwide. Weaker gaming servers may reach their peak due to this security fix, resulting in possible latency issues. So yeah, while the performance impact of this fix on a PC system may be relatively small for individual users, it can potentially lead to major gaming performance issues – especially for online games like Fortnite or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – caused by the gaming servers.

Intel Braces for an Avalanche of Class Action Lawsuits - tech
(hx) 06:14 PM CET - Jan,05 2018 - Post a comment
Following reports of Intel's gross mishandling of its CPU vulnerabilities Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715), and Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754); particularly its decision to not call off 8th generation Core "Coffee Lake" processor launch after learning of its vulnerability; and a general barrage of "false marketing" allegations, with a dash of "insider trading" allegations added to the mix, the company is bracing for an avalanche of class-action lawsuits in the US, and similar legal action around the world.

Owners of Intel CPU-based computers in California, Oregon, and Indiana, have filed separate complaints alleging that Intel sold vulnerable processors even after the discovery of Meltdown and Spectre; that the chips being sold were "inherently faulty," and that patches that fix them are both an "inadequate response to the problem," and "hurt performance" (false marketing about performance), by 5 to 30 percent. All three complainants are in the process of building Classes.

By the time Intel launched its 8th generation Core "Coffee Lake" desktop processor family (September 25, 2017, with October 5 availability), the company was fully aware that the product it is releasing was vulnerable to the three vulnerabilities plaguing its processors today, the two more publicized of which, are "Spectre" and "Meltdown." Google Project Zero teams published their findings on three key vulnerabilities, Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715); and Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754) in mid-2017, shared with hardware manufacturers under embargo; well before Intel launched "Coffee Lake." Their findings were made public on January 3, 2018.

Intel's engineers would have had sufficient time to understand the severity of the vulnerability, as "Coffee Lake" is essentially the same micro-architecture as "Kaby Lake" and "Skylake." As one security researcher puts it, this could affect Intel's liability when 8th generation Core processor customers decide on a class-action lawsuit. As if that wasn't worse, "Skylake" and later micro-architectures could require micro-code updates in addition to OS kernel patches to work around the vulnerabilities. The three micro-architectures are expected to face a performance-hit, despite Intel extracting colorful statements from its main cloud-computing customers that performance isn't affected "in the real-world." The company was also well aware of Spectre and Meltdown before its CEO dumped $22 million in company stock and options (while investors and the SEC were unaware of the vulnerabilities).

The holding company is composed of people who worked for the Chinese factories, company spokesman Alex Verrey said "It's not like people are just using the Mad Catz name to push out a new and unrelated range of products."

AMD fixes a Radeon driver bug breaking DX9 games - tech
(hx) 10:39 PM CET - Jan,04 2018 - Post a comment
If you are one of the gamers that have been impacted by AMD's new Adrenalin driver and its issues with DX9 games, you may now just be in luck. AMD has released an ALPHA version of its Adrenalin driver v18.1.1 that will hopefully fix some of your issues. Be advised, "Alpha" means alpha as this driver has not been fully tested and is NOT recommended for general use. I would suggest a backup of your OS before installing this driver. If you are still seeing specific issues, I highly recommend making AMD aware of the problem.
Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.1.1 Alpha Highlights

This early access driver is being provided for users who have had issues launching a small number of DirectX 9 based games. This alpha driver has not been fully tested by AMD and is not recommended for general use.
Windows 10 Intel Security Update is now available - tech

Yesterday, I informed you about a security design flaw in Intel’s processor that required a new software update. According to initial reports, this fix would bring a performance hit on Intel’s CPUs somewhere between 5-30%. Microsoft has released this security fix for Windows 10 so it’s time to test some triple-A games under CPU-bound scenarios.

Looks like games generally won't be worst case scenario, but applications that switch to kernel mode a lot will be the most affected.

Security fix may decrease performance on Intel's CPUs - tech
(hx) 09:34 AM CET - Jan,03 2018 - Post a comment
If the reports are accurate, it appears that Intel might have a pretty severe chip-level security bug on its hands that cannot be simply swatted away with a microcode update. The bug affects all modern Intel processors dating back at least a decade. We should note that squashing the bug requires a patch at the OS level; and Linux patches have already been distributed (with redacted comments). Microsoft is expected to address the bug in its monthly Patch Tuesday update

In a nutshell, the bug allows everyday programs to "illegally" access certain contents in protected kernel memory. The "fix", so to speak, is to implement Kernel Page Table Isolation (PTI), which, for all intents and purposes, makes the kernel invisible to running processes. In a perfect world, such training wheels shouldn't be needed to isolate the kernel, but software patches that are nearing release for Windows, Linux and macOS systems will address the exploit head-on.

There's one big problem, however. Fixing this vulnerability in software also comes with a big hit on performance. Additional overhead is introduced to maintain a barrier between memory address spaces, which can result in a performance handicap of 30 percent or more :-(

GTX 1060 now the most popular GPU now - tech
(hx) 08:15 PM CET - Jan,02 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
Steam's monthly hardware and software survey results have arrived. December brought changes at the top of some categories, including the most popular graphics card and virtual reality headset. In the GPU category, it’s Nvidia’s GTX 1060 that now stands above the rest. The card didn't actually see its usage increase; it fell, but by less than the other top GPUs. November’s number one, the GTX 750 Ti, dropped by 4.13 percent, while the second-place GTX 960 went down by 3.52 percent, leaving the GTX 1060, which only fell by 0.85 percent, to take the top spot. The biggest GPU winners are the GTX 970 and 1070, which increased by 1.14 percent and 1.05 percent, respectively. As usual, the highest AMD entry is far down the list: the Radeon 8800 series is the red team’s top performer. It took the 23rd position with a share of just 0.54 percent.
AMD Unlikely to Fix DX9 Games Bugged by Adrenalin Driver - tech
(hx) 10:58 AM CET - Jan,02 2018 - Post a comment
AMD ended 2017 with its year-end mega driver release, the Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition (17.12), which introduced a large number of new features. The drivers, incidentally, also inadvertently caused bugs with some 10-year old games running on the older DirectX 9 API. When AMD Radeon users took to Reddit, and other tech forums to report these issues, AMD responded on its official support forums that it is "unlikely to devote any valuable engineering resources to this issue." Among the games affected, old as they may seem, are AAA blockbusters, including "C&C3 Tiberium Wars," "C&C3 Kane's Wrath," "C&C Red Alert 3," "C&C Red Alert 3 Uprising," "C&C4 Tiberian Twilight," "Battle for Middle Earth 1-2," and "The Witcher Enhanced Edition." AMD blames its inability to fix these issues to outdated API models. The company's full statement reads "This title is from 2007, so we are unlikely to devote any valuable engineering resources to this issue, which is most likely caused by outdated API modules."

AMD has lost a lot of good will on their GPU side this past year. The awful VEGA launch, the deceptive 560 change and now this. I really hope they can bounce back and bring competition, but they certainly ain't the unambiguous pro consumer company fanboys make them out to be. AMD is just digging its own grave at this point.

Wishing you a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings in the year to come!
  • NVIDIA to Launch GeForce GTX 1060 with 5GB Memory - NVIDIA is allegedly preparing a new variant of GTX 1060 that is aimed at Internet cafes. This version of the card will feature slightly lower VRAM and a cut-down memory bus, while retaining the same number of cores as the 6GB variant. The GTX 1060 is an exclusive model for the Chinese market, where the popularity of Internet cafes is booming. These cards are to be sold in bigger quantities, hence no fancy packaging is to be expected (so in that regard, it would be similar to P106-100 mining series). Expreview has confirmed that GTX 1060 5GB will use 1280 CUDA cores. This should be enough for solid 1080p gaming at higher settings.
  • GPD Win 2 Handheld Launches April 2018, Runs GTA V - The second iteration of the GPD Win will arrive in the spring of 2018 with a bigger screen, faster memory and storage, and a more powerful processor than the original, letting you play popular games such as GTA V and Need for Speed: Rivals on the go. The one big negative we know of so far is the price. Whereas the original cost $400, the GPD Win 2 is expected to be $699. However, an Indiegogo campaign planned for Jan. 15 will offer it for $599 with the launch happening at some point in April.

  • Apple apologizes for slowing iPhone, drops battery prices - In a lengthy message posted on its site Thursday, the company gave an in-depth explanation for the controversial update. To make amends, Apple will temporarily drop the price of replacement batteries to $29 starting in late January. The price will go back up to the usual $79 in 2019. Customers are upset with the company over a software update that deliberately slowed down older phones in some situations to extend battery life. Some thought it was a ploy to get people to upgrade to new devices. A number of people have filed lawsuits over the feature and are seeking class action status. The feature will stay on phones, but Apple says an upcoming iOS update will " give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery." It did not say if it will give them the ability to turn the feature off or on.
  • Apple Lowers Battery Replacement Cost to $29 Immediately - Apple made $29 replacement batteries available to owners of older iPhones effective starting today. The drop, announced earlier this week, was originally slated to go into effect in late January. "We expected to need more time to be ready, but we are happy to offer our customers the lower pricing right away," said Apple in a statement provided to Axios. "Initial supplies of some replacement batteries may be limited." Apple uses software to limit the performance of some older iPhones in order to prevent battery-related shutdowns. Replacing the original, aging battery with a new one resolves such issues and leads to better performance of the smartphone. The battery replacement service typically costs $79, but Apple has lowered the cost to $29. The program will run through December 2018 and targets the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and SE.
  • Microsoft Says It's Time to Kill Off the Password - Microsoft's solution to the password? You. In what is probably a veiled attempt at drumming up interest for Windows Hello, its facial, fingerprint, and iris-scanning system, the company is touting the superiority of biometrics over strings of typed text for security.
  • The Pixelbook Is Being Used to Test Google's Fuchsia OS - New documentation pertaining to Fuschia suggests that Google’s upcoming OS, designed to run across a wide array of devices, will support higher-end laptops such as the Pixel, which has recently been listed as a "targeted" device. While the project is open source and subject to public inspection, nobody seems to know what it will really look like or how it will perform.
  • First Power-At-A-Distance Wireless Charging Technology Approved by  - Energous Corporation announced they have received FCC certification for power-at-a-distance charging technology. The new technology sends focused RF power to devices up to three feet away. This technology should be very handy for anyone using small wireless devices like earbuds, smart watches, wireless keyboards and mice, and other similar devices you hate to plug in or set on a pad. I can't wait for this to make it to market because the convience this type of charging offers is excellent

  • Intel Outs Unannounced 1TB BGA SSD, 64L 512Gb NAND Die - Intel released the image of a new 1TB BGA SSD with little fanfare, but while we don't know many definitive technical details, we can deduce a few things from the design. Intel will soon join Toshiba and Samsung with a multichip package (MCP) SSD sporting up to 1TB of 3D NAND capacity. A leaked roadmap earlier this year listed a BGA-mounted 1TB Intel 600p SSD, but we cannot verify that this is a 600p model.

  • Apple Confirms It Slows Older iPhones To Manage Battery Performance  - Apple today confirmed what owners of older iPhones have long suspected: that new versions of iOS will slow down the performance of older iPhones. The matter has regained significant discussion in recent days due to benchmark scores shared on Reddit that appear to show a correlation between new versions of iOS and reduced performance. Apple says this is a feature, not a bug. "Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices," said Apple in a statement provided to TechCrunch. "Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components." Device shutdowns are problematic for a number of reasons, including safety. "Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future." In short, Apple says older iPhones will in fact slow down from time to time in order to preserve battery performance and prevent the shutdowns. Apple has not previously disclosed this policy. Doing so might have helped it mitigate customer complaints. It is worth pointing out that iPhone owners have the option of having Apple install a new battery in their older iPhone (~$79), which would resolve the battery-related slow down issue.
  • Microsoft Quietly Adds Native OpenSSH Client to Windows 10 - It's a long-overdue move that's guaranteed to delight developers who use Windows as their daily driver: Microsoft is introducing a native OpenSSH client to Windows 10. This means that developers won't have to rely on third-party software (like PuTTY) whenever they log into a remote server. They can just use an officially Microsoft-supported tool, from the familiar Windows command prompt. Once you download and install the OpenSSH client using the settings app in Windows 10, you will be able to use SSH from an elevated CMD or PowerShell. Of course, users using the Windows Subsystem for Linux have already been able to use SSH in Windows 10, but the addition of the built-in OpenSSH client right in Windows 10 will be a welcome addition for those who don't need all the features that come with the entire Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  • Windows 10 Facial Recognition Feature Can Be Bypassed with a Photo - Microsoft has released updates earlier this month to patch a vulnerability in the Windows 10 Hello facial recognition system that allows an attacker to bypass the facial scan with a printed photo. The feature uses near infrared (IR) imaging to authenticate and unlock Windows devices. Researchers say that by using a laser color printout of a low-resolution (340x340 pixels) photo of the device owner's face, modified to the near IR spectrum, they were able to unlock several Windows devices where Windows Hello had been previously activated.
  • Edward Snowden Surprises With Security App - Edward Snowen's new app, Haven, turns your spare Android device into (ironically, maybe) a watchdog, monitoring for intrusions and invasions of privacy using available software and hardware features. Snowden, who exposed the National Security Agency's intrusions of privacy by spying on private phone calls, is the President of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which released Haven in conjunction with the Guardian Project. Haven works by sensing motion, sound, vibration and light caused by "unexpected guests and unwanted intruders". It captures and saves images and sound when it senses any motion or noise, and is also able to send notifications immediately as they occur, while allowing users to access sensor and trigger logs remotely. Snowden is currently living in Russia under asylum, with his passport terminated by authorities in the United States following his whistleblowing. True to his predicament, Snowden's Haven aims and claims to protect "investigative journalists, human rights defenders, and people at risk of forced disappearance."
  • Google Releases Tool To Help iPhone Hackers - Google released a hacking tool for iOS 11.1.2 (11.2 is out now) that is says can find bugs in that release. Supposedly in can only be used on the 7, 6s, and iPod touch 6G, but can be adapted for use on others. According to Google this tool is out there to help Apple patch exploits faster and make iOS more secure. I guess we'll just have to take Google at their word on this one.
  • Top-Selling Handgun Safe Can Be Remotely Opened in Seconds without PIN  - The Vaultek VT20i, one of Amazon's top-selling electronic gun safes, contains a critical vulnerability that allows it to be opened by virtually anyone, even when they don't know the password. Researchers with security firm Two Six Labs were able to open a VT20i safe in a matter of seconds by using their MacBook Pro to send specially designed Bluetooth data while it was in range.
  • New Cryptomining Malware Spreading Through Facebook Messenger - The good folks at Trend Micro have discovered a new cryptomining bot in the wild and it spreads through Facebook Messenger. The good news is this one won't melt down your phone or tablet and the bad news is it will infect your Chrome web browser on your desktop. If you get a video file through FM, and don't know where it's from, you might have received this critter. Digmine is coded in AutoIt, and sent to would-be victims posing as a video file but is actually an AutoIt executable script. If the user's Facebook account is set to log in automatically, Digmine will manipulate Facebook Messenger in order to send a link to the file to the account's friends. The abuse of Facebook is limited to propagation for now, but it wouldn't be implausible for attackers to hijack the Facebook account itself down the line. This functionality's code is pushed from the command-and-control (C&C) server, which means it can be updated.
  • YouTube VR is now available to Steam VR users - Fans of YouTube's ever-growing 360-degree video content library may be pleased to hear that Google has finally launched a YouTube VR app on PC. The app, which was previously only officially available to Google Daydream VR and PlayStation VR users, has been a long time coming for the PC audience. While YouTube's 360-degree videos have always technically been available for viewing without any VR hardware on PC, users haven't been able to get the full experience until now. Instead, fans of the content have had to take advantage of unreliable workarounds or shell out the extra cash for a Daydream or PlayStation VR headset. At any rate, the app is now available on Steam VR as a public beta to all HTC Vive owners. That said, the initial user response to the app has been a bit frosty, with Ars Technica reporting that many users can't seem to get the app to work at all. As a result, some have taken to the app's community discussions and reviews to vent their frustrations.
  • New Chrome update lets you easily mute autoplay videos - One of the most annoying things about browsing the web is videos that autoplay with sound. For anyone that has tried to browse discretely in the back of a boring meeting or presentation, you know how loathsome these can be. The latest update for Google Chrome aims to make web browsing just less annoying overall. Chrome 64 beta allows users to easily mute autoplaying videos across an entire website. To enable this feature, click on the green lock or info section to the left of the URL. From here you will have the option to always allow audio, always block audio, or use the default setting. In addition to this new setting, the latest Chrome also comes with an improved pop-up blocker. This is aimed at preventing websites from using transparent overlays or decoy play/download buttons to open new tabs or pop-ups. Along a similar line, the update will also help prevent malicious redirects. It does this by blocking third-party content hidden in a webpage unless the user has interacted with that element.
  • Netflix subscribers are about to surpass paid TV - As the trend of cord cutting continues, Netflix is about to have more subscribers than cable providers. In a survey by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, it was found that 73 percent of respondents subscribe to Netflix and pay for TV services.  Over the last few years, cable subscribers dropped from 79 percent to 73 percent. It is almost certain that the cord cutting trend will continue while Netflix will continue to bring in new customers. After showing massive subscriber growth earlier this year, Netflix remains on track to surpass traditional TV. The main reason that consumers still pay for TV is access to live sports. An astounding 82 percent of those surveyed said they would end or reduce their TV packages if it were possible to watch sporting events live. Sports fans are likely to pay approximately $23 per month to obtain unlimited access to live sporting events.
  • Sprint to Launch 5G In 2019 Using 2.5 GHz Spectrum - Sprint today voiced its support of the recently ratified NSA 5G NR specification and revealed its own plans for deploying 5G. The specification for NSA 5G NR includes support for up to 100 MHz on a single carrier (in the 2.5 GHz band) versus today's limit of 20 MHz per carrier. Sprint holds a massive 160 MHz slice of 2.5 GHz spectrum in the top 100 markets around the U.S., which will allow Sprint to offer mid-band 5G to many Americans. The company is working with Qualcomm and SoftBank to bring 5G services and devices to market by late 2019. Sprint says it will first use Massive MIMO as a stepping stone to 5G. It will launch Massive MIMO in its 2.5 GHz spectrum in 2018. These radios contain 64 transmitters and 64 receivers each, which allow for incredibly accurate beam-forming. These radios will be software-upgradeable to 5G NR. Sprint did not say anything about plans to support mmWave-based 5G in high-band spectrum. "This is an important milestone and we're making great progress accelerating the development and commercialization of 5G NR in the 2.5 GHz band," said Dr. John Saw, Sprint CTO. "5G will spur dramatic innovation and progress around the world, and we see great opportunity in mobile 5G, massive machine type communications, and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications." AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all have similar plans and timeframes for bringing 5G to market.

Nvidia Will no Longer Support 32-bit OS - tech
(hx) 08:00 PM CET - Dec,22 2017 - Post a comment / read (3)
If you're running a 32-bit operating system and are using an Nvidia GPU you better start thinking about upgrading to 64-bit if you want to continue to get game ready drivers. Yes, you read that correctly. Nvidia will no longer provide drivers for 32-bit operating systems after the 390 driver release. Not surprising. Existing drivers will probably keep extreme legacy programs on older operating systems going for another 10 years or so. That should be adequate. And new games usually require more than 4GB ram (32 bit OS limit), so I don't see a problem with this.

RAM Matters: How Much Do You Need for Gaming? - tech
(hx) 01:20 PM CET - Dec,16 2017 - Post a comment / read (6)
It's hard to determine the impact that RAM capacity has on gaming because of all the factors at play. Before we get into the results, we'd just like to discuss a few challenges we faced when testing system memory capacity. The first and possibly the biggest challenge is picking the right hardware to test RAM capacity. The graphics card you use can influence how much memory you'll need for smooth gameplay, the speed of your storage can also impact performance.
For casual gamers, the bare minimum is still 8GB but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the upgrade to 16GB will ensure smoother gameplay.

For serious gamers with mid-range to high-end hardware, we're almost at the point where we'd say 16GB the the minimal acceptable amount of system memory. Of course, as we said earlier, if you've invested over $1,000 in your GPU and SSD combo then chances are spending just shy of $200 to secure a decent 16GB DDR4 memory kit probably isn't something you're going to think twice about. For GTX 1060 or RX 580 owners who've spent $200-$250 on their graphics card, dumping another $200 on DDR4 memory is something they're probably umming and ahhing about. If you're playing games such as Battlefield 1 or in particular Call of Duty WWII and you care about being competitive, then 16GB really is a must.

Alternatively, if you have a relatively high-end GPU such as the GTX 1070 or Vega 56 but play older, less memory-intensive games, then 8GB will no doubt be fine. But again, for these newer titles you'll ideally want 16GB.

NVIDIA TITAN V Gaming Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 11:31 PM CET - Dec,13 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
GamersNexus and HardwareLUXX have published some more gaming benchmarks for NVIDIA’s latest graphics card, the NVIDIA TITAN V. Both of these websites have tested numerous triple-A games and below you can find benchmarks for Sniper Elite 4, Destiny 2, Call of Duty: WWII, The Witcher 3, Project CARS 2 and more.
Sniper Elite 4 is our next title. We run this game at 4K with High settings, DirectX 12, and async compute enabled. Stock, the Titan V operates at 115FPS AVG, with lows at 97 and 91FPS for 1% and 0.1%, respectively. This places it about 27% ahead of the Titan Xp stock GPU, posting massive leads over the predecessor. This is after retesting the Titan Xp with the latest drivers, too, so what we’re seeing is a legitimate performance uplift in the Titan V, despite its clock deficit.

Before digging into this data more, let’s analyze it a bit: We’ve learned in the past that Sniper Elite tends to be surprisingly shader intensive. This is true when comparing the Vega 56 and 64 cards and the GTX 1080 and 1070 Ti cards. The game likes shaders, and that makes sense, as it’s built to asynchronously queue render jobs into those shaders. Having more available means more simultaneous in-flight render jobs. Sniper tends to be particularly sensitive to GPUs in general, but more to shaders than we see in other games.

Back to the chart, overclocking the Titan V to its +200 offsets gets us 41% ahead of our overclocked Titan Xp Hybrid card. This is a tremendous gain, and shows that the card becomes more constrained by its stock clocks in this particular game. The takeaway is that the extra shaders help, but they need to be fed with higher frequencies to really engage fully.
