  • How to Choose the Right CPU for 1080p Gaming: 14 Processors Compared - Balance is the goal here. Intel's Core i7-8700K is the first chip we think of when it comes to top-of-the-line for gaming PCs. But it doesn't always lead in our benchmarks. It would likely fare better with more heavily threaded titles tested. Otherwise, the Core i5-8600K seems to be a better value pairing for Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080. The GeForce GTX 1070 pairs well with either a Core i5-8600K or Ryzen 7 1800X, though the latter notably offers additional performance in other enthusiast-oriented desktop apps.
  • Intel has microcode updates for modern CPUs and fixed silicon for  - Krzanich has made a blog post that says the company has microcode updates ready for all of its products released in the past five years, and that CPUs with "hardware-based protection" for the security flaws will launch toward the end of 2018. Those microcode updates include every one of the company's processors back to the launch of the Haswell family in 2013. It's worth noting that Intel's also cooking up microcode updates for CPUs as old as 2007's Conroe series. Unfortunately, not every system may have Intel's updated microcode available as a firmware update. Intel has a whole site dedicated to helping users deal with Meltdown and Spectre, and down the page a bit there's a list of manufacturers with links to their own pages about the flaws. The upcoming chips with hardware-based protection against Meltdown and Spectre include the next generation of Xeon Scalable processors (code-named Cascade Lake) as well as another run of eighth-generation Core CPUs. In the blog post, Krzanich tacitly admits that the Spectre Variant 1 vulnerability won't be fixed by updated hardware and will "continue to be addressed via software mitigations." That's not really a surprise given the nature of the flaw, as it exploits fundamental concepts in modern microprocessor design. Intel doesn't say exactly what it's done to help mitigate Meltdown and Spectre in the upcoming CPUs, but Krzanich notes that the company "redesigned parts of the processor to introduce new levels of protection through partitioning."
  • IBM Unveils the World's Smallest Computer - IBM has managed to build a computer that is smaller than a grain of salt. Despite the tiny size, it features hundreds of thousands of transistors and is as powerful as an x86 processor from the 1990s. The goal of the chip is to combat fraud with the help of blockchain technology.
  • Intel Now Offering System Studio for Free - Intel has changed their licensing model for System Studio and now they're offering it as a free 90-day renewable commercial license as well as a paid version with full Intel technical support. If you have a business and are interested in it then just head over to the download page and register. Use Intel® System Studio with a free commercial license backed by community forum support. This license allows usage for 90 days, and can be refreshed an unlimited number of times to use the latest version. You can convert at any time to a paid license, which provides Priority Support for one year.
  • Microsoft wants to force Windows 10 Mail users to open links in Edge - When Microsoft released Windows 10 build 17623 to Skip Ahead today, one of the "changes, improvements, and fixes" listed was that the company is going to start testing a feature that will force users of the Windows 10 Mail app to open links in the Edge browser. Dona Sarkar, who wrote the blog post, said that Edge "provides the best, most secure and consistent experience on Windows 10 and across your devices." The only problem is that not everyone feels that way. Many users have Chrome, Firefox, or something else set as their default browser, and Microsoft wants to subvert that in order to get them to use its own in-house solution. Luckily, Windows 10's default Mail app isn't the only email client that you can use. Luckily, Microsoft is only testing the feature, and it will take feedback from the Windows Insider community. Depending on how that goes, it may decide to push the feature. But make no mistake, despite the fact that this showed up in a Redstone 5 build, it will be made available through a Mail & Calendar app update, meaning that this could be pushed through at any time.
  • Microsoft Admits It Incorrectly Upgraded Some Windows 10 Users To - Microsoft has admitted that it incorrectly updated some Windows 10 machines to version 1709 despite users having paused update operations in their OS settings according to a report from BleepingComputer. Only users that were on V1703 were affected, in that version Microsoft added special controls to the Windows Update setting section that allowed users to pause updates in case they had an issue with the latest version.
  • Apple Puts Family Resources On a Single Web Page - Apple recently published a new web site meant to help families manage their iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple accounts. The site offers high-level overviews of all the parental controls available, as well as deep-dive tutorials with step-by-step directions on how to enable each tool. Parents have long been able to manage iTunes purchases, control content, set time/usage limits, see location data, share calendars and iTunes purchases, and more. The new Families web page is meant to serve as a central resource. It describes in detail how parents can reduce distracted driving for teens, set family groups and manage communications, find lost devices, and so on. The web site arrives after shareholders published an open letter earlier this year asking the company to address smartphone addiction.
  • Apple is developing own microLED display tech for future Apple Watch - A report on Bloomberg states that the Cupertino giant is, for the first time, developing its own displays at a secret facility near its California headquarters. Per the report, according to sources familiar with the matter, the company is working on developing next-generation microLED screens that might be used in future Apple Watch, iPhone and other Apple products. microLED displays consist of arrays of microscopic LEDs that form individual pixel elements.
  • Google Home Lets People Set Reminders That Ping Their Phone - Google has this week added several new features to Google Home that make the product more useful. First, people can now set reminders on their Google Home that are triggered by their phone's location. For example, at home, say, "Hey Google, set a reminder to pick up more coffee at the grocery store," and Google Assistant will remind you on your phone when you're actually at the grocery store. This is an expansion of a feature Google first announced last month. Second, routines are now more widely available. Routines string together a handful of actions that are triggered by a specific catch phrase. For example, people can ask Google to tell them about their day and get the news, weather, and traffic information they need first thing in the morning. Routines can now proactively turn off mobile devices' silent mode, and even interact with Assistant-powered appliances. Google is offering a half dozen routines to start, including morning, leaving home, bedtime, and so on. Users can easily customize the routines, and even ensure Google Assistant recognizes individual users for personalized routines. The new tools are free to use.

If so, and you're in the market for a new phone, the Apple iPhone X, Google Pixel 2 XL, and Samsung Galaxy S9+ should be at the top of your list. Here's a rundown of the features offered by each and how the three devices compare in a head-to-head shoot-out
  • Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus Destroyed - SquareTrade, a company that sells insurance for all sorts of electronic devices, namely smartphones, gives the new Samsung S9 devices a fairly low score when it comes to breaking those.
  • Samsung 'Looking Into' Unresponsive Galaxy S9/S9+ Screens - Samsung has acknowledged that some Galaxy S9 and S9+ handsets have unresponsive screens. Early adopters of the handset have taken to Samsung's forums to voice complaints about the issue, which renders areas of the display unresponsive to touch input. "At Samsung, customer satisfaction is core to our business and we aim to deliver the best possible experience. We are looking into a limited number of reports of Galaxy S9/S9+ touchscreen responsiveness issues. We are working with affected customers and investigating," said Samsung in a statement provided to CNET. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ reached store shelves March 16.
  • Samsung reportedly testing multiple solutions to embed fingerprint sensor in Note 9 display - A source familiar with the matter recently told The Korea Herald that Samsung's display arm has prepared “three or four” solutions for Samsung Electronics to embed a fingerprint sensor inside the main display of the Galaxy Note 9. Both divisions are said to be “seriously considering” one of the solutions. The source added that the delay in finalizing the concept for the phone is due to the work in adopting the in-display fingerprint sensor. A final decision on adopting the technology will be made by the end of the month, the source said. That should still give Samsung enough time to manufacture the phone without any significant delays. The publication notes that in previous years, the concept for a flagship phone has been finalized about five months before launch. If finalized by the end of the month as the source indicates, that would put the launch somewhere around late August or early September - right in the middle of Samsung's usual Note launch window.
  • Ledger Crypto Wallet Hacked By 15-Year-Old -Saleem Rashid, a 15-year-old programmer has discovered a flaw in the Ledger hardware wallet that allows hackers to get secret PINs before or after the device gets shipped according to a story on his blog. The vulnerability discovered allos for a "supply chain hack" where the device could be compromised before the device is ever used, as well as an "Evil Maid attack" that can get the data after the device has been used at least once after it has been attacked.
  • Bitcoin's Blockchain Loaded with Child Pornography - Researchers at RWTH Aachen University in Germany claim to have found 274 links to child pornography while investigating what financial data has been stashed within the blockchain according to a report from PCMag. in a paper that was presented at a conference earlier this month, in which the researchers also state that a pornographic image, possibly of a minor was also embedded into the blockchain, which theoretically could make Bitcoin illegal to possess in 112 countries. If true this certainly makes for an interesting twist into the legality of Bitcoin, as well as possibly the future of cryptocurrency as a whole.
  • Cryptocurrency Exchange Offering $250k Bounty For Hackers - Cryptocurrency exchange Binance was the target of a hacking attempt on March 7th, and they aren't happy about it. In an article from Binance, they announced that they are offering a $250,000 USD equivalent bounty to anyone who supplies information that leads to the arrest of the hackers involved with the attempt on March 7th. Furthermore, the company has stated that they have allocated the equivalent of $10 million USD in crypto reserves for future bounty awards against and other hacking attempts on Binance. Of course the bounties will be paid in Binance Coin, which very well may be worthless when you get it, or worthless right now depending on your feelings on cryptocurrency.
  • Steve Jobs' job application from 1973 auctioned for $174,757 - A job application that was filled out by Steve Jobs back in 1973, just a few years before he and Steve Wozniak would setup Apple, has been auctioned off for $174,757. The typewritten and handwritten document can be partly seen here. It was won by an anonymous British Internet entrepreneur at an auction hosted by the Boston-based RR Auction house on Friday.
  • Facebook received four lawsuits in one week following Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal - According to an SFGate report, Facebook has been slapped with four separate lawsuits in San Francisco and San Jose-based federal courts. These lawsuits are being filed by the company's shareholders and regular users alike. One of the lawsuits in question was filed by Maryland resident Lauren Price, who hopes to turn the suit into a class-action case representing the 50 million people who have had their personal information compromised as a result of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Two other lawsuits filed by shareholders Fan Yuan and Robert Casey are also seeking class-action cases. The fourth lawsuit is perhaps the one with the most potential, however. Filed by San Francisco-based attorney Jeremiah Hallisey, the legal action is reportedly a "shareholder derivative suit" filed on behalf of Facebook's shareholders against the company's leadership team. The suit's targets include company CEO Mark Zuckerburg, COO Sheryl Sandberg and Facebook's board members.
  • Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Woman in Arizona - According to police, a woman was struck and killed by an autonomous Uber vehicle in Tempe, Arizona Sunday night. In a statement on Twitter, Uber wrote, "Our hearts go out to the victim's family. We're fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident." The company's vehicle pilot program was suspended around this time last year following a crash also in Tempe, though that incident did not result in any injuries. Uber says following this latest accident, the program has been suspended yet again

Real-Time Ray Tracing Star Wars Demo - tech
(hx) 11:12 PM CET - Mar,22 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
In the computer graphics community this week, companies from Nvidia to Microsoft have been stressing just how important real-time raytracing will be to making games look more movie-like in the near future. Epic Games used a striking demo at a Game Developers Conference keynote presentation this morning to show just how much better raytracing can make real-time, interactive graphics look with top-of-the-line hardware right now. The Star Wars "Reflections" demo, made with the cooperation of Nvidia and ILMxLAB, showed two extremely realistic-looking and talkative Stormtroopers clamming up in an elevator when the shiny Captain Phasma pops in. Running on what Epic still refers to as “experimental code” (planned to be introduced to Unreal Engine for production later this year) the raytracing in the demo allows background elements like the guns and the opening elevator doors to reflect accurately off Phasma’s mirror-like armor in real time. These are the kinds of effects that Epic CTO Kim Libreri highlights they’ve “never been able to do before [with rasterized graphics].”

Microsoft Announces DirectX Raytracing - tech
(hx) 11:39 PM CET - Mar,19 2018 - Post a comment / read (7)
Today at GDC, Microsoft announced DirectX Raytracing or DXR for short. It’s basically the first step towards getting real-time raytracing into mass market games. The technology, that will be built into the current DirectX 12 API, has been developed in partnership with Nvidia, and promises to take a step beyond what is possible with the current base of 3D graphics, rasterization. According to Microsoft, this will “bridge the gap between the rasterization techniques employed by games today, and the full 3D effects of tomorrow.” It will also “open the door to an entirely new class of techniques that have never been achieved in a real-time game.”

AMD Ryzen 2700X & 2600 Review Leaked - tech
(hx) 09:31 AM CET - Mar,17 2018 - Post a comment
WCCFTech is reporting that a review of the upcoming 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs has been leaked. The review shows faster inter-core communication, lower cache latency, as well as higher bandwidth. There are a ton of charts from the leaked review to browse through, but the gist of it is, the new 2700X is between 12-18% faster than the 17000X. AMDs Ryzen platform just keeps getting better and better, if the leaked review is true that is. The launch date for the new chips is April 19th, and I'm definitely looking forward to see how they perform.

  • Nvidia's GTX 2070 and 2080 cards could be unveiled next month - Speaking to TweakTown, a "well-placed source" in the industry said the first public showing would take place at Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference (GTC), which begins on March 26. The new cards will follow the current Pascal-based 10-series with either an 11-series or 20-series naming system, which means we could see the GTX 1180 or the GTX 2080. Whatever they're called, these new gaming GPUs are said to be based on the 12-nanometer Ampere architecture. It was thought that the new GeForce cards would use the same Volta architecture found in the Titan V and Tesla V100, but it now looks as if Volta will be reserved for Nvidia's top-end cards built for AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and deep learning.
  • The Intel Optane SSD 800p (58GB & 118GB) Review: Almost The Right Size - With today's prices, I would almost always choose a ~500GB 3D TLC SSD over the 118GB Optane SSD 800p. At 500GB and up, even the latest SSDs with 512Gb 3D TLC NAND don't really suffer the performance penalties of being too small, so the Optane SSD 800p's performance isn't a huge boost. It's always less of a hassle when your primary drive is big enough to hold most or all of your data, and drives like the Samsung 960 EVO or Intel SSD 760p (limited availability at the moment) are fast enough.
  • PCPer Male Bag Reaches 33# - This week the bag is full of Thunderbolt 3 usages, AMD stuffs, and the lack of DX12 games.
  • Upcoming Windows 10 update will bring a dedicated AI - Microsoft seems interested in kicking things up a notch as far as AI goes if their latest blog post is anything to go by. In the post, the company said the next "major update" for Windows 10 will arrive with a dedicated AI platform for developers. To be clear, making use of AI is nothing new for Microsoft. The company already uses machine learning for services like Windows Hello and Office 365. However, a developer-oriented AI platform could lead to some pretty significant improvements for many third-party Windows apps. This new AI platform, dubbed "Windows ML," will allow developers to take advantage of a user's PC resources to perform AI processing tasks, reducing or, in some cases, eliminating the need to use potentially expensive cloud processing solutions. According to Microsoft, this platform will be supporting the "industry standard" ONNX format for machine learning models, a format "driven by Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon Web Services." In addition to reducing operating costs, the upcoming ML platform could allow for much quicker, lower-latency AI processing. As Microsoft says in the blog post, "results can be delivered quickly and efficiently for use in performance-intensive workloads like game engines, or background tasks such as indexing for search." Developers will also be able to use some of Microsoft's pre-created machine learning systems to speed up generic AI tasks, further contributing to the aforementioned reduction in development costs.
  • Cortana gets Outlook integration - Although Cortana lacks many features its mainstream competitors had for many years, email integration will no longer be one of them. The company has officially rolled out Outlook integration for the Halo-inspired virtual assistant on Windows 10, and the Invoke. With this, it will allow you to ask if you received any new emails, and it will then respond with a list of senders and the message sent by them. Beyond that, it offers deeper functionality, that allows you to ask it for emails from a specific person or entity. Adding to this, it will also let you respond to these messages via dictation. Outlook integration for Cortana rolled out to a limited base for the time being, with those using the U.S. English language setting on Windows 10 getting access to it. Unfortunately, it does not function alongside iOS or Android devices yet. However, with it being Microsoft, this should change in due course.
  • Microsoft Says It Optimized Skype for Older, Slower Android Devices - Microsoft recently released an updated version of Skype for Android meant for older smartphones. Specifically, this down-tuned variant of Skype is intended for Android devices running 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich to 5.1 Lollipop. Microsoft says Skype for these phones uses less memory and less storage, allowing the app to run faster while also improving audio and video quality even in challenging network conditions. Microsoft is rolling out this update worldwide over the next few weeks. Those who want to download the app immediately can do so via the Skype Insiders Program. Skype is free from the Google Play Store.
  • Microsoft Selling Customized Variants of Samsung Galaxy S9 - Microsoft has added the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ to its online store. The devices are pre-configured with Microsoft apps and services. "A Microsoft customization is applied to the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Microsoft Edition when the devices are unboxed and connected to WiFi," explained Microsoft. When users first boot the device, they will be prompted to download Microsoft apps such as Office, Outlook, OneDrive, Cortana, and Microsoft's launcher for Android. Other than the software, the specs and features of the S9 and S9+ are unchanged from other versions of the phone. When purchased from Microsoft, the S9 and S9+ are unlocked. The S9 costs $720 and the S9+ costs $840.
  • AT&T Matches Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S9 Offer - Preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ start today and AT&T hopes its promotion will score with customers. Similar to Sprint's offer, AT&T will give customers up to $500 in account credits through combined promotions. First, customers who port in a number from a competing carrier will be rewarded with a $150 bill credit. Further, those who trade in a smartphone will receive a minimum of $200, and possibly as much as $350, in bill credits. Phones worth $350 on trade are the Apple iPhone 8, 8 Plus or iPhone X; LG V30; Google Pixel 2/XL Phones. Phones worth $300 on trade include any of the Samsung Galaxy S7 variants. With these offers combined, AT&T says the S9 price drops to as low $290, while the S9+ drops to $415. By way of comparison, Sprint is offering $350 off its S9/S9+ lease program and $150 via Visa gift card. The S9 is also sold by T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
  • Honor 7C shows off facial recognition feature in new leaked ad - The Honor 7C will be the firm's latest smartphone and will arrive with a 5.99-inch 18:9 720p display, dual cameras comprised of a 20MP and 13MP sensors, and a design that looks identical to the Honor 7X. If the ad is any indication, one of the handset's main attractions will be its ability to recognize a user's face and unlock the phone.
  • Xiaomi's upcoming Mi Mix 2S teased in new video - Xiaomi teased the newest addition to its bezel-less flagship series, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, in a video it released on MiaoPai, a Chinese streaming platform. It doesn't feature much in the way of engrossing content, outside of confirming the presence of the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC in the device through hand signs. While no other internals are confirmed, the rumor mill suggests that the Mix 2S will sport a 6" OLED screen in the newer 18:9 aspect ratio, along with a whopping 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. Some sources also say that it may feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen much like Vivo's recently announced handset, though again, this isn't officially confirmed.
  • Bill Gates: cryptocurrencies are killing people - Cryptocurrency tends to split opinion. Some people believe in digital currencies like bitcoin and maintain that their value will keep rising, while others call them Ponzi schemes beloved by criminals. After his Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session, it seems Bill Gates falls firmly into the latter camp. The former Microsoft CEO even said the technology "has caused deaths in a fairly direct way."  When asked for his opinion on cryptos, Gates said their main feature was the anonymity they offer, and he doesn't think this is a good thing. The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing. Right now cryptocurrencies are used for buying fentanyl and other drugs so it is a rare technology that has caused deaths in a fairly direct way, he explained.
  • Google Releases First Preview of Android P - Google today made the first preview of Android P available to developers. The revised version of Android adds a number of user-facing features as well as tools for app writers. For example, Android P tackles notifications for messaging. Users will be able to see image previews in notifications, as well as better see who sent the message and select auto-responses. A new API for developers gives them more power over devices with dual rear- or front-facing cameras, and Android P adopts supports for the HDR VP9 Profile 2 and HEIF multimedia formats. Android P brings with it support for "display cutouts" similar to the notch on the iPhone X.
  • Google Assistant Lets Device Makers Create Custom Actions - Google today introduced new Custom Device Actions for Google Assistant that will give devices native functionality specific to their hardware. Custom Device Actions build on the Assistant's existing Actions tool for issuing specific commands. Google says, for example, washing machines that include Google Assistant will let owners ask the machine to activate specific wash cycles simply by asking.
  • Google Maps Adds Mario Time for Navigation - Google today updated Google Maps for Android and iOS with a fun feature: Mario. Once users update to the latest version of Maps, they'll be able to turn on Mario Time for navigation. When activated, Mario will appear in place of the navigation arrow while driving, walking, or commuting. Google says the bonus feature is rolling out starting today and will be available for about a week.
  • Apple Confirms It Uses Google's Cloud for iCloud - In a report from CNBC, a file on Apple's website called the iOS Security Guide confirms that it is relying on Google's public cloud for storage for iCloud Services. Previous versions of the guide had stated that Apple was relying on Amazon Web Services, as well as Microsoft Azure for data storage, however in the newest report the Azure reference is now gone with Google in its place. Anyone want to take bets on when Google gets investigated for being a monopoly? It seems you can't do anything without them.
  • iTunes Store Dropping Windows Vista and XP Support on May 25th  - Apple has stated on a support page post that it will be dropping support for Windows Vista, XP, and the first generation of Apple TV on May 25th. Apple states that on Vista and XP machines, you will still be able to use older versions of iTunes without support, however you will not be able to make any purchases from the store.
  • California enters Right to Repair movement with new proposal - California is the latest state to get on board yesterday when it announced the California Right to Repair Act. The bill is being proposed by Democratic Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman, who believes consumers should have the right to choose where to have their devices repaired. One would think that such a law would not have much chance in California. However, other than Turkey, California is the only place where electronics manufacturers are required to service devices for at least seven years as opposed to five years everywhere else. This is reflected in Apple's own support policies.
  • Thieves Steal 600 Powerful Bitcoin-Mining Computers in Huge Heist - Hundreds of servers designed to mine bitcoin have been stolen in Iceland, and authorities have been unable to track down a single system. The missing hardware includes 600 graphics cards, as well as 100 processors, 100 power supplies, 100 motherboards, and 100 sets of computer memory. Law enforcement is hoping for an energy surge somewhere, as they appear to be out of leads. According to The Associated Press and Visir, those are the items a coordinated group of Icelandic thieves has stolen. And though 11 people have reportedly been arrested and at least two are still in custody, none of the stolen computers have yet been found by police The thefts, which occured between late December and early January, were reportedly captured on surveillance cameras by Advania, the server company hit by two of the three thefts. (The graphics cards, processors and so on were allegedly stolen from a home.) Advania had been offering its customers access to bitcoin-mining rigs, and it sounds like those were the type that were stolen. The Associated Press reports that the stolen computers are worth nearly $2 million.
  • Hardcoded Password Found in Cisco Software - Cisco is constantly releasing security advisories for their products, but the recent advisory has an interesting little tidbit about a hardcoded password. Believe it or not their Prime Collaboration Provisioning software app has a hardcoded password that can be exploited by a local attacker. There is no mitigation for this and Cisco customers are advised to patch the PCP application ASAP. In this day and age I just can't fathom a hardcoded password......you're supposed to be better than that Cisco.
  • T-Mobile Is Building 5G in 30 Markets This Year - T-Mobile today provided more details concerning its forthcoming 5G network. It will be building 5G across 30 cities in the U.S. this year. It will start with New York City in the 600 MHz and mmWave spectrum bands. Other named cities include Dallas, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The company has been fortifying its LTE 4G network with technologies such as carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM, License Assisted Access, and FD-MIMO with 64 antennas (32 transmit, 32 receive). The company is not going to cap its LTE network in any form, continuing to use it for the foreseeable future. All these technologies have helped the company prepare for 5G. T-Mobile says 5G and 4G are going to coexist and live together. T-Mobile reiterated that it will first use its 600 MHz spectrum for 5G, though it is also eyeing the 3.5 GHz mid-band and 28 GHz mmWave spectrum. The FCC expects to auction off 28GHz later this year. T-Mobile didn't specify what mmWave spectrum it will us for its 5G network. T-Mobile sees 5G encompassing fixed broadband (routers), mobile service (phones, AR/VR, wearables, drones), and IoT (sensors, industrial automation). It will cover every inch of the U.S. with some 5G service by 2020 with equipment from Nokia and Ericsson. The company is already deploying 5G NR-capable hardware in its base stations. T-Mobile expects to debut the first 5G smartphones and other products during the first quarter of 2019.

In this instance, a clip from Arma 3 briefly appeared in a segment on the war in Syria. State-run Channel One TV's weekly Voskresnoye Vremya program was airing a segment celebrating Russia's armed forces, to commemorate last week's Defender of the Fatherland Day. Roman Filippov, a Su-25 ground attack aircraft pilot killed in Syria earlier this month, was one of those honored. In a sequence showing Su-25 jets in action, one scene contained what appears to be a truck being attacked from the perspective of a sniper. It's on the screen for less than a second, but a closer look reveals the clip is from the 2015 military simulator game, Arma 3

Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9+ Hands-On - tech
(hx) 09:41 PM CET - Feb,25 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
Samsung has announced the Galaxy S9 and S9+ phones, updates to last year's S8 models. The devices bear a striking resemblance to their predecessors and make only modest changes to the hardware. The S9/S9+ feature 2:1 screens with slightly reduced bezels and glass panels front and back. Most significantly, Samsung rotated the camera/fingerprint module so the reader is in a central location on the rear. The phones also adopt stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and produce louder sound than the S8/S8+. The S9/S9+ carry over features such as the waterproof chassis, USB-C port, headphone jack, and dedicated Bixby button. Samsung made significant improvements to the camera. The 12-megapixel cameras now include switchable aperture, from f/1.5 to f/2.4, to help with low-light situations. The camera sensor includes embedded DRAM memory - similar to Sony's premium phones - that allows the S9/S9+ to capture 960fps slow-motion. The slow-mo mode includes a motion detection function so it knows when to slow down the video for maximum effect. Each phone also includes an 8-megapixel selfie camera, along with face and iris scanning for security. Samsung added AR Emoji, a tool that echos the Animoji feature on the iPhone X to a certain degree. Users record their face which is then turned into a cartoon avatar and applied to 18 different personalized GIFs. The AR Emoji also let users animate faces such as a devil, and even apply (and purchase) various types of makeup. Further, S9/S9+ owners can easily save and share the AR Emoji with most other devices. Samsung says the S9/S9+ include a more refined version of Bixby that is now able to recognize more actions. More importantly, Bixby Vision now works in real-time, allowing for instant language translation and searches when viewing items through the camera. The devices ship with Android 8 Oreo, the Samsung SmartThings app, and the latest version of Samsung's DeX software. Samsung's SmartThings will allow the S9/S9+ to interact with other connected Samsung devices, such as refrigerators. The DeX software now works with a new dock that lets the phone act as a virtual mouse and/or keyboard. The S9 includes a 5.8-inch quad HD+ screen and 3,000mAh battery, while the S9+ includes a 6.2-inch quad HD+ screen and 3,500mAh battery. The only other difference in the hardware is found on the rear of the S9+, which features a second camera for 2x telephoto images. Both phones rely on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The phones support microSD cards up to 400 GB. Preorders for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ kick off March 2 and the phones will reach stores March 16. Samsung is offering up to $350 for trade-ins when put toward the purchase of an S9/S9+. The phone will be sold in black, purple, and blue in the U.S. AT&T, Cricket Wireless, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless, and Xfinity Mobile all plan to carry the phone. It will also be available form Best Buy, Amazon, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart. Pricing is about $799 for the S9 and $899 for the S9+.

TechNews - Most Windows 10 PCs running v1709 - tech
(hx) 06:47 PM CET - Feb,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (18)
Microsoft is likely pleased with the updates adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. LOL, it's amazing the things you can accomplish when you FORCE change onto people!! If you have seen Windows.old folders which cannot be deleted without changing ownership/access rights. It's nice if you have workstation with 120GB SSD with few gigabytes free space...FYI, this week, the firm released new updates for PCs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) and the Creators Update (version 1703). If you're on version 1703, you'll see KB4077528, or build 15063.936. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes
  • World of Tanks enCore, Tested on 10 GPUs - Wargaming says it optimized its Core graphics engine for weaker configurations, and it only requires a dual-core CPU. Our results confirm the developer's assertions. Even with two physical cores enabled, the benchmark's frame rate remains excellent. Activating SMT helps improve our observed minimum frame rate, and there are no additional gains available beyond four physical cores.
  • 20 Multiplayer VR Games That Work Across Platforms - Virtual reality games are great fun, but with several platforms on the market, the communities for these games are often fractured and suffer from small installed bases. The best way to avoid a fractured community is to offer a way to bring everyone together. Here's a look at VR games that offer cross-platform gameplay in one form or another.
  • 5-Way Mech Keyboard Roundup - Chris over at Hot Hardware took the time to do a roundup review that covers five difference mechanical keyboards from Corsair, Azio, HyperX, Aukey, and Cherry.
  • Most Windows 10 PCs are now running the Fall Creators Update - Microsoft in October launched the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, delivering a bundle of small and medium-sized improvements to customers utilizing Microsoft’s latest operating system. If data from cross-promotion network AdDuplex is at all accurate, Microsoft is likely pleased with the update’s adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. In some countries like Canada, Germany and Finland, the update has a market share of over 90 percent although others such as China and India bring the global average down with adoption rates in the 60 percent range.
  • How To Disable Wi-Fi Sense In Windows 10 - Wi-Fi Sense is a feature in Windows 10 that saves you from the hassle of manually connecting your device to an open Wi-Fi hotspot and to those managed by your Facebook, Skype, and Outlook contacts. Wi-Fi Sense does this by sharing the secret passkeys that your contacts use to connect to the wireless networks, or by sharing your passkeys with your contacts to allow them to connect to your wireless network. Although Wi-Fi Sense is enabled in Windows 10 by default in an effort to provide a hassle-free experience, using the feature could also be a security concern.
  • Google's ARCore 1.0 Released to Public, Google Lens Hits More - Google today made ARCore 1.0 available to developers and the public, bringing augmented reality to some 100 million smartphones around the world. Handsets compatible with ARCore include Google's Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL; Samsung's Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8, S7, and S7 edge; LGE's V30 and V30+; Asus's Zenfone AR; and OnePlus's OnePlus 5. More devices from Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Asus, Xiaomi, HMD/Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile, and Vivo will be compatible with ARCore later this year
  • Google disclosed Microsoft Edge security flaw before it's fixed - The vulnerability reportedly relates to how Edge handles code execution and was first disclosed to Microsoft by Google back in November. After giving the software giant 90 days to fix the issue, Project Zero researchers have gone public with their findings. Though the specifics of the discovery are complicated and quite technical, the gist is hackers are able to bypass Microsoft Edge's existing security measures to inject malicious code into a victim's PC memory, according to Neowin. With this in mind, it's not hard to see why Project Zero awarded the flaw a "Medium" severity rating. As of writing, Microsoft has not rolled out a fix for the vulnerability so security conscious users may wish to use an alternate browser for the time being.
  • Samsung Halts Galaxy S8 Oreo Update Due to Reboot Bug - Samsung has pulled the Android 8 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 after users reported random reboots. "Following a limited number of cases where Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices have rebooted unexpectedly with the Android 8.0 Oreo, we have temporarily stopped the rollout of the update," said Samsung in a statement provided to SamMobile. "We are investigating the issue internally to ensure that the impact to the affected devices is minimized and the rollout of the update can resume as quickly as possible." Samsung has been rolling out Android 8 slowly over the last few weeks, mostly in European markets. The update had not yet reached the S8 and S8+ in the U.S. Samsung did not say when it expects the make the update available again.
  • Samsung Max Offers Data Savings and Security for Android - Samsung has announced Samsung Max, a free app for Android devices that will provide new data conservation and security tools. The app, a reborn version of the former Opera Max app, includes Data Saving Mode to help people stretch their mobile data buckets a bit further each month. The app can monitor which apps are using data and alert users to apps that consume too much. It also helps by actively compressing images, videos, music files, and web pages within apps and the browser to keep data consumption down. People can fine-tune how Data Saving Mode polices other apps in the advanced settings tools. On the security front, Samsung Max includes Privacy Protection Mode, a VPN for securing phones when on WiFi. It encrypts WiFi traffic with a single tap, blocks trackers and cookies, and includes a Domain Name System masking service to hide the user's location. Samsung says Samsung Max will reach the Google Play Store on February 23. The company will also preinstall it on some devices later this year.
  • New Samsung S9 Video Ad Reveals More Details - Between the three video advertisements, Samsung teases the abilities of the upcoming phone, without ever showing the actual phone. It's obvious that Samsung is trying to hint at the abilities of the camera on the Galaxy S9, as seen with the motif of the round hole in the '9' at the end of each video resembling the view through a round lens. What do you think?
  • Apple Puts Its Foot Down, Will Require Apps Support iPhone X - Apple today told developers that soon all new apps submitted to the iTunes App Store must support the screen of the latest iPhone. "Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK, included in Xcode 9 or later," said Apple in an email to developers. "All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X." The iPhone X display swaps the 16:9 aspect ratio found on the iPhone 6, 7, and 8 for a 2:1 aspect ratio with a notch at the top. It also boosts the resolution beyond full HD. Apps that haven't yet been updated for the iPhone X often have black bars at the top and bottom, which look unsightly. Developers can find the iOS 11 SDK on Apple's developer web site.
  • Apple Prepping Fix for Message Bug that Crashes iPhones  - Apple says it has a patch in the works that will counter a bug causing iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and even Macs to crash. The bug occurs when people receive a message with certain Indian language characters in apps including iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. According to The Verge, Apple will push the patch "soon." This means the bug will be fixed through a minor update (iOS 11.2.x) rather than the larger iOS 11.3 update expected later this spring. Apple also plans to issue patches for macOS and watchOS to resolve the issue on those devices
  • How iFixit Became the World's Best iPhone Teardown Team - The most important thing that happens when a new iPhone comes out is not the release of the phone, but the disassembly of it!
  • Phones At Apple Repair Center Are Calling 911 Multiple Times a Day - CBS Sacramento is reporting that phones located at an Apple repair center in Elk Grove California have been calling 911. The Elk Grove police states that they receive on average, 20 accidental 911 calls a day from the repair center, and roughly 1,600 calls since October. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Communication Center is also getting these calls, 47 since January.
  • Qualcomm Drops 802.11ax WiFi Modem with WPA3 Security for Phones - Qualcomm today announced the WCN3998, a pre-standard 802.11ax WiFi radio for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 is faster, more power efficient, and more secure than previous designs. To start, the 802.11ax spec allows for more throughput for each user, thanks to 8x8 MU-MIMO, even on congested access points. This ensures that end users see an increase of speeds by a factor of two. Moreover, the WCN3998 puts strict power management algorithms to work in order to reduce power consumption by up to 67%. The WiFi radio is among the first to adopt WPA3 encryption from the WiFi Alliance. WPA3 provides a much greater degree of security on home, public, and enterprise networks, and can even protect those who fail to pick strong passwords. Last, the WCN3998 adopts Bluetooth 5.1 with extended data rate and low energy mode. This makes for more robust wireless audio connections and battery life improvements of up to 75%. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 supports pre-draft access points that it expects to reach the market later this year and early next year. The WiFi radio will find its way into flagship smartphones by the end of 2018.
  • Blu Vivo X Boasts 4 Cameras, 6-Inch 18:9 Display - Blu Products today announced the Vivo X, a flagship handset that costs less than $200. The phone is among the first from Blu to jump to the 18:9 aspect ratio for its 6-inch 1440 by 720p display. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. A MediaTek Helio P25 processor powers the phone with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The Vivo X features two sets of dual cameras. A 13-megapixel main camera adorns the rear of the phone with LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and full HD video capture. The secondary camera has a 5-megapixel sensor. Together, they can produce bokeh-style images. On the front, the Vivo X features a 20-megapixel standard-angle camera with user-facing LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, and face unlock, and an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera. Other features include a 4,010mAh battery with rapid charging, fingerprint reader, MaxxAudio speakers, dual SIM card support, Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi, GPS, and support for GSM networks in the U.S. It runs Android 7 Nougat. Blu is selling the Vivo X unlocked from its own web site as well as Amazon for $199
  • New Crypto Payment System Available - Even though many vendors (Microsoft, Steam, others) have stopped taking crypto as payment for goods and services this isn't stopping Coinbase from offering a new service that lets vendors take crypto as payment. They call it Coinbase Commerce and they are offering it up to merchants all around the world. Whether or not this brings more merchants back into the fold is anyone's guess, but if it works as easily as Coinbase says it does then I bet some merchants take another look at this. In my opinion, it's just as important to get crypto out there as a purchasing device as it is to be an investment vehicle. Until crypto is used more often it's only going to be a novelty.

Midrange, high-end graphics card prices to rise - tech
(hx) 11:49 PM CET - Feb,23 2018 - Post a comment / read (4)
Things are not looking good for everyone wishing to build a new gaming PC. As we all know, the prices for all modern graphics cards have sky-rocketed over the past few months. And according to NVIDIA, this situation will not be resolved soon as the prices will continue increasing through Q3 2018
NVIDIA was here at Massdrop HQ a couple of weeks ago re-confirming what we already know. There is a couple of reason why there is a shortage and also such a high demand of cards.

First the shortage.
All new cell phones coming out by Apple and Samsung (and others) last year started using the same memory as graphics cards. Apple and Samsung are willing to pay more for this memory to make sure they get it first and all of it that they need. This has created a shortage of memory for the much smaller companies like MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, and EVGA to make graphics cards.

Next the demand
This is obvious as the mining craze thats been going on has created a huge demand in the market as miners are goblin up just about every card available on earth.

These two things combined has just made it a tough time for any system builder out there that just wants a card or two for their rig.

While NVIDIA was here they also let us know that the pricing in the market will continue to go up through Q3 of this year most likely before we start seeing any type of relief. So, unfortunately the end to this is not right around the corner and we have not seen the worst of it yet.

Let me finish by telling everyone on Massdrop this. I will continue to list graphics cards that I can for the community if I am able to offer a competitive price. Also, as I have mentioned in other graphics cards drops we are selling this for right above our cost just barely covering back end expenses.

Why should Massdrop offer these cards above MSRP? Well, there are still customers who want to build computers now and not wait 6, 9, 12 months for the market to stabilize. So as long as I can bring them a better deal than what is currently available I will continue to do so. That being said MSRP is kind of out the window at this point so keep your eye on market price VS Massdrop as you will not see any cards out there anywhere close to MSRP for a while to come.
Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.2.3 drivers - tech
(hx) 10:27 AM CET - Feb,23 2018 - Post a comment
AMD today released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition. Version 18.2.3, the third release for this month, comes with optimization for "Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age," "Sea of Thieves," and "Brass Tactics." With "Sea of Thieves," the drivers enable up to 29% higher frame-rates at 4K UHD, when measured with Radeon RX Vega 64, and up to 39% higher frame-rates at 1080p, when measured with an RX 580. With FFXII, it enables up to 13% higher frame-rates at 1440p measured with an RX Vega 64, and up to 20% higher frame-rates at 1080p, with an RX 580. A host of FreeSync-related bugs are addressed with this release. They correct a bug experienced with FreeSync kicking in during online video-playback in Google Chrome, causing flickering; rapid frame-rate changes between minimum and maximum FPS ranges when gaming in certain system configurations; which causes stuttering; and a flickering observed on FreeSync-capable displays when performance metrics overlay is enabled with Enhanced Sync. A Radeon Overlay flickering noticed on Vulkan API games was fixed. A display corruption issue with "Fortnite" was fixed

  • 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen CPU Showing Boot Issues with Old BIOS -  AMD has issued a support bulletin this morning pertaining to its 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen CPUs. It seems that some older UEFI BIOS are not playing nice with the new CPUs. All in all, this is not all that uncommon when it comes to new CPUs and motherboards that support previous generation processors. If you are unable to get your system to POST or boot with a new Ryzen, the solution is simple and hopefully you will have what you need on hand to make this happen.
  • Ryzen 5 2400G Live Testing! - Due to a retail slip-up, tech YouTuber SonofaTech received his AMD Ryzen 5 2400G early and proceeded with a 10-hour live test to demonstrate the chip's ability to run newer titles in 1080p at appreciable framerates. It did particularly well with games such as Overwatch (1080p, high preset, up to 70 FPS) and Dirt Rally (1080p, medium preset, average 57 FPS).
  • Microsoft is bringing HoloLens to two more markets - Microsoft has published its February update for mixed reality. It's the first in a series of monthly blog posts where the company will discuss what's new for its platforms. Most notably, the firm announced that HoloLens will now be available in two new markets: Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. This brings the total number of markets that the device is available in to 41, after 29 countries were added in December. The other significant development is that HoloLens is now available to rent. Businesses in the United States and Canada can rent one from ABCOMRENTS, so they can evaluate the product and decide whether to purchase it, or just to temporarily increase their inventory. Unfortunately, there's still no news of a second-generation HoloLens. The last we heard of such a device was a year ago, and that report said that the next model will be available in 2019. In the nearly two years since the Development Edition was made available, little has changed. In fact, the device is still running the Anniversary Update, and Microsoft still only sells a Development Edition for the same price of $3,000, and the Commercial Suite for $5,000.

If you don't have the individual apps it will prompt you to download them from the App Store and once they are setup the TV app will allow for single sign-on into any of them. Also, it integrates the Siri ability to start playing a specific network if you like. All in all it's a good capability for Apple fans. While not as extensive as the Sports interface, the News section in the TV app allows users to instantly access live streaming news content from several different networks. You get direct access to CBS News, CNN, Fox News, Cheddar, CNBC, and Bloomberg.
  • Microsoft will finally start letting users resume interrupted Windows updates - We've all been there. When Windows 10 is trying to download and install a big update, it takes a long time, and sometimes you'll have to shut down or reboot your PC before it's finished. Once you boot back up, you'll find an error message in Windows Update with a 'Retry' button, and it's time to start the process over. But according to a report from Windows Central's Andy Weir, that's all about to change. Soon, you'll be able to resume the download/install process, instead of starting from scratch.

  • Chrome 68 Will Mark All HTTP Sites As 'Not Secure' - In the interest of security, Google plans to call out web sites that don't adopt https. Later this year, version 68 of the Chrome web browser will proactively label web sites that don't make use of https encryption. The company has been casually marking such web sites, but will start to call them all out this summer. The goal is to encourage web developers to add https to their web sites, which will improve security for everyone. According to Google, over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows is now protected, while over 78% of Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac is now protected. Fully 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use https by default. Google said it will adjust Chrome's user interface so users understand which sites are insecure and why they are insecure. Google says it has simplified its set-up guides to help web developers secure their sites with https.
  • Half of All Cryptojacking Scripts Are Found on Porn Sites - Data from Qihoo 360's Netlab is being used to confirm the obvious: cryptojacking is rampant on adult sites. To be exact, 50% of all mining scripts live on some kind of porn site. These pages are typically intrusive and ad-ridden, so there is little surprise here, despite time-consuming gaming and video streaming portals being potentially better deployments. Based on the meta keywords each site used to describe its content, porn sites represented the bulk of the detected domains on which researchers found JS-based mining code. Adult sites accounted for 49%, followed by fraud sites (8%), advertising domains (7%), cryptocurrency mining (7%), and film and television streaming sites (6%).
  • Stealthy Data Exfiltration Possible via Magnetic Fields - en Gurion University researchers have developed two pieces of malware that rely on magnetic fields to exfiltrate data from an air-gapped device. One of them is called ODINI and it uses this method to transmit the data to a nearby magnetic sensor. The second piece of malware is named MAGNETO and it sends data to a smartphone, which typically have magnetometers for determining the device's orientation.
  • Hackers Infect Android Phones And Smart TV's to Mine Monero - Hackers have infected thousands of Android phones and smart TVs, turning the devices into Monero miners. Chinese cyber security firm 360Netlab announced that the attack affected more than 7,000 devices in China by taking advantage of an open port 5555. The report says that scan traffic for port 5555 is growing rapidly as the ADB.Miner worm spreads. The researchers told ZDNet the hackers weren't opening the port themselves, which would have been a much more worrying attack. "The 5555 ADB interfaces of those devices have already been opened before [they're] infected," the researchers said. "We have no idea about how and when this port was opened yet."
  • Verizon to Start Locking Its Phones Again to Fight Thieves -  In a statement provided to CNET. "These steps will make our phones exponentially less desirable to criminals."
  • Elon Musk's Satellite Broadband Clears Crucial U.S. Hurdle - Bloomberg is reporting today that Elon Musk's SpaceX application to provide broadband services using satellite technologies was recommended by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today. Last year SpaceX requested authority to deploy and operate a constellation of 4,425 satellites operating 700-800 miles above Earth. The proposal now has to go before Ajit Pai's four fellow commissioners for approval. If approved I have to wonder how ling it will take to deploy 4,425 satellites. While I love the idea of satellite internet, one thing that they still have not overcome is latency, we will see if the team at SpaceX can solve that problem..

(hx) 09:08 AM CET - Feb,13 2018 - Post a comment
Another driver update is available for AMD GPU users. Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition version 18.2.2 provides support for Kingdom Come: Deliverance as well as two of the most popular battle royale games in the industry, PUBG and Fortnite. The driver specifically provides performance boosts to the Radeon RX Vega 56 and RX 580 with games running at the resolutions of 1440p and 1080p, respectively. Warhorse’s medieval-based title should receive a performance boost of up to 3% on the RX Vega 56 and 4% on the RX 580. Those attempting to be the last player standing in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite will also benefit from the driver. PUBG fans may experience a 3% or 6% performance boost on the RX Vega 56 and RX 580, respectively. Fans of Epic Games’ early access title should see a performance improvement of 5% on the RX Vega 56 and a 7% increase on the RX 580.

Detailed Denuvo-Cracking Video Tutorial - tech

21-year-old Bulgarian cracker Voksi has revealed how he beat version 4.9 of Denuvo, which kept Assassin’s Creed Origins out of pirates’ hands for the last few months. The video is pretty dry and technical, but it does provide insight into the complexities and inner workings of DRM. Voksi says his entire cracking career began with this one indie game and his desire to play it with his best friend. Prior to that, he had absolutely no experience at all. He says he’s taken no university courses or any course at all for that matter. Everything he knows has come from material he’s found online. But the intrigue doesn’t stop there.

Final Fantasy XV PC Edition looks beautiful but ... - tech
(hx) 10:09 PM CET - Feb,10 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
The Digital Foundry put the Windows version of Final Fantasy XV to the test. The results were interesting, and at times controversial.
In terms of overall performance, the highest preset delivers a 45.9fps average on GTX 1060, dropping like a stone to 33.2fps on RX 580 - that's a huge 38.3 per cent advantage for Nvidia. Stripping out GameWorks sees the delta drop: 56.8fps vs 52.7fps - a mere 7.8 per cent lead for the Green Team, which drops again to just 5.5fps on the standard setting. However, frame-rate averages do not tell the whole story. As we look at averages of the lowest frame-times, Nvidia's lead is significant. When AMD performance is hit, it's hit harder - but the GeForce experience is still far from ideal.

Collating the lowest five per cent, one per cent and 0.1 per cent of frame-times (converted into frame-rate in the table below to make things a little easier to understand), it's clear that the averages aren't representative of consistency across the experience, and GameWorks has a big impact on the fluidity: it's clearly noticeable on Nvidia and sometimes disastrous for AMD. However, looking at the percentiles without Nvidia's proprietary tech in play, it's clear that AMD performance still has a long way to go. This is perhaps to be expected bearing in mind Square-Enix's Nvidia collaboration and the fact that we have no idea how much time, if any, AMD's driver team has had with the game.

  • Best Professional Monitors - Professional monitors always come at a premium price but for that extra coin you get multiple color gamut options, factory-certified calibration and often times the ability to create your own color presets with included software and instruments. When you need the absolute pinnacle of color accuracy, one of the screens can fulfill that need, usually without any initial adjustment.
  • Windows 10 S becoming a mode, not a version, as Microsoft shakes up its pricing - With the next big update to Windows 10, version 1803, Microsoft is making some big changes to how it sells the software to OEMs. The biggest casualty? Windows 10 S-the restricted version of Windows that can only run apps from the Store-is going away. Currently, Windows 10 S is a unique edition of Windows 10. It's based on Windows 10 Pro; Windows 10 Pro has various facilities that enable system administrators to restrict which software can be run, and Windows 10 S is essentially a preconfigured version of those facilities. In addition to locking out arbitrary downloaded programs, it also prevents the use of certain built-in Windows features such as the command-line, PowerShell, and Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  • No Office 2019 Without Windows 10 - A post on the Windows blog outlines changes to servicing and support of Windows and Office. • A critical Adobe Flash Player zero-day vulnerability - Adobe's Flash Player has been the cause of security concerns over the past few years with lots of attackers targeting the particular software. A few months ago, Kaspersky Lab discovered a Flash vulnerability through Microsoft Word, and in February 2017, even Microsoft was forced to release a critical security update for Flash on Windows, separate from its Patch Tuesday schedule. Now, another zero-day vulnerability has been discovered in the software, which allows Remote Code Execution (RCE) on various platforms. According to Adobe, it is already being utilized against Windows users on a limited scale. The latest security issue has been discovered by South Korea's CERT and has been reported in detail by Cisco Systems' Talos group. According to the security researchers, the exploit is carried out by embedding a Flash SWF file in a Microsoft Excel document. In the limited number of attacks carried out using this vulnerability so far, opening this document allows the Flash object to download the ROKRAT payload from malicious websites, load it into the memory and execute it
  • Facebook bans ads for cryptocurrencies, ICOs and binary options - Facebook has just made it a bit harder for scammers to solicit your hard-earned dollars for cryptocurrency purchases. Of course, the social media company's new policy also may hit some legitimate crypto ads as well. The policy, made public by Facebook Product Management Director Rob Leathern, "prohibits ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency." The move is to protect users from ads that are trying to capitalize on the popularity of these new financial opportunities through bad faith.
  • Bitcoin Free Fall Continues As Dominant Cryptocurrency Drops Below $7,000 - It looks as though it isn't just the Dow Jones that is having a crappy day in the financial world. Bitcoin, which was trading at close to $20,000 in late 2017, has come crashing down to earth in the past few weeks. Just last week, there panic coursed through the market which caused the cryptocurrency to drop below $10,000. Today, Bitcoin dropped under $7,000. According to Coindesk, Bitcoin is currently at $6,784, which represents a 17 percent drop for the day. Bitcoin hasn't seen these lows since it began a meteoric rise back in mid-November 2017. For those keeping score, Bitcoin has lost roughly half of its value since the start of 2018... ouch.
  • eBay is dropping PayPal as its main payment provider - eBay has announced it is moving away from the payment service. eBay said it had signed an agreement that will see Adyen become its primary payments processing partner. The Amsterdam-based company, which offers back-end payment services to businesses, counts Netflix, Spotify, and Uber among its customers. Adyen will offer an integrated payments solution within eBay itself, meaning you won't have to log into a separate website for transactions. This should make paying on eBay a smoother experience and bring it in line with other retailers such as Amazon. The good news for most users is that the move will result in reduced payment processing charges, which can eat into sellers' profits. Despite charging less, eBay is expected to add $2 billion of revenue to its business once it starts taking the processing fees, according to Recode.
  • Google Turning On Pixel Visual Core in All Pixel 2 Handsets - Google today made the February security patch available to its Nexus and Pixel devices. First and foremost, the patch closes a number of security holes in the code that left all the handsets vulnerable to certain types of attacks. Google plugged up issues in the kernel, framework, system, and in select Qualcomm components. The update also provides a number of feature updates specifically for Pixel 2 devices. For example, it boosts Bluetooth call quality, WiFi uplink performance, and battery performance. It also improves the camera, Android Auto, app compatibility, mobile data, and audio switching, and provides stability fixes. Last, as already mentioned, the February patch turns on the Pixel Visual Core in the Pixel 2 and 2 XL for better photography

  • Microsoft Releases $189 Laptops For Schools - Microsoft is unveiling 10 new Windows 10 devices for schools starting at $189, challenging the Chromebook to keep teachers and students using Windows. The least expensive if the group is the Lenovo 100e, which is an 11.6" rugged laptop, with an unspecified Intel Celeron Apollo Lake processor, 2 or 4 GB of LP-DDR4, 32-64GB of eMMC storage, and weighing in a 2.7 lbs. Affordable laptops isn't the only thing that Microsoft is announcing today for schools. They also go into free Professional Development for schools using Microsoft 365 Education, to train teachers how to get the most from the new technology. As well as additional learning tools, Minecraft: Education Edition, a curriculum using Mixed Reality and HoloLens, and more. It makes sense to get kids into the Windows environment as early as possible from a business standpoint to get them into the ecosystem early, although that didn't work with me and the Apple II's my school had.

Integral said its new 512 GB microSD card will reach stores in February, but it did not reveal pricing. By way of comparison, SanDisk's 400 GB card retails for $250.
  • Microsoft Is Retiring the Windows Homegroup - With the latest Windows Insider build of Windows 10, Microsoft has killed off "Windows HomeGroup." Originally a part of Windows 7 in 2009 and continuing until now, HomeGroup was a way to share files and devices between computers on your network. This change will go live in the Spring 2018 update to Windows 10.vReally does not phase me at all, except I'm happy to have less bloat on my machines. The handful of times I've tried to use HomeGroup it simply failed miserably compared to just sharing over the network without it. Quote below is from Microsoft's Blog post on Insider Build 17063.
  • Chrome to Support HDR Video Playback - Google today provided an update on the progress it has made with the Chrome browser over the last year and offered a peek at some features that will arrive later this year. To start, Chrome now supports play/pause, rewind, and fast forward controls for audio and video. The browser handles picture-in-picture playback on Android, and improved audio/video controls on both the lock screen and notification shade. The browser is able to mute web sites and soon will let people customize which sites are allowed to autoplay audio and video content. Google has already begin adding support for high dynamic range video content to Chrome for Windows 10 devices, and will expand HDR video playback to more platforms soon. HDR content of course offers more vibrant colors and darker blacks. Last, Google is prepared for the official release of virtual reality on the web, which it has been testing for the better part of a year. Google said HDR video and VR are coming to Chrome later this year. HDR and HDR+ content can be played back on a handful of smartphones, such as the LG V30 and the Samsung Galaxy Note8.
  • Google's Bulletin App Lets Everyone Be a Local Reporter - Google is testing a new application called Bulletin, a way for people to contribute stories about their own community. The free app lets people capture photos, videos, and text on their phone and then publish those microstories directly to the web without forcing people to create a blog or build any sort of web site. Google believes Bulletin can help communities highlight stories that aren't be told in regional newspapers or larger news sites. Stories published on Bulletin are public and easy to find via Google Search, social networks, and direct links. Bulletin relies on smartphones and no setup is necessary. The idea is to let more people share in creating the voice of their community. Google is testing Bulletin via limited pilots in Nashville, Tenn., and Oakland, Calif. People who live in those markets can request early access to the program.

Windows 10 update will reveal what data Microsoft is collecting - tech
(hx) 11:48 PM CET - Jan,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (4)
When Windows 10 was first released, the OS was received well enough on its merits but users were quick to voice concerns regarding Microsoft's new data collection measures, some of which could not easily be turned off. In October 2017, the Dutch data protection authority claimed Windows 10 violated local privacy laws. The year prior, France's data protection commission voiced similar concerns and ordered the software giant to "stop collecting excessive user data" without consent. Microsoft has taken steps to address these concerns -- including the implementation of a "privacy dashboard" -- but they haven't managed to silence them entirely. Microsoft will soon be offering Windows 10 users a new level of transparency in an upcoming OS update. The update will include the "Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer" feature which will let users see exactly what data the company is collecting about them. According to The Verge, Microsoft collects data regarding your peripherals, movie consumption habits, installed apps and more. This update will be made available to Windows 10 Insiders sometime this week but there's no word on when it will be launching for everyone else.
Intel Spectre&Meltdown fixes=complete&utter garbage - tech
(hx) 09:24 AM CET - Jan,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (5)
Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, has bashed Intel's Spectre and Meltdown fixes. In a public email exchange, Torvalds called Intel's fixes "complete and utter carbage" and wondered what the fuck was going on.
The patches do things like add the garbage MSR writes to the kernel entry/exit points. That's insane. That says "we're trying to protect the kernel". We already have retpoline there, with less overhead.

All of this is pure garbage. Is Intel really planning on making this shit architectural? Has anybody talked to them and told them they are f*cking insane? Please, any Intel engineers here - talk to your managers.

TechNews - Best Gaming CPUs - tech
(hx) 11:29 PM CET - Jan,20 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Best Gaming CPUs - For most high-end gamers, the flagship mainstream models in Intel's Core i7 and AMD's Ryzen 7 product families offer the best value. Intel's Coffee and Kaby Lake models offer the best absolute gaming performance, but AMD's Ryzen 7 series comes with more cores, which you might find attractive if you have more demanding requirements, such as streaming or intense multi-tasking. You can also often find the Ryzen processors well below MSRP.
  • NVIDIA Wants Retailers to Sell GeForce GPUs to Gamers, Not Miners - NVIDIA has publicized some of their thoughts on the GPU pricing situation: speaking with ComputerBase, spokesman Boris Bohles thinks that gamers, not miners, are more deserving of their products and that retailers should better meet their needs. There is no indication that NVIDIA will actually engage trading partners to ensure this happens, however.
  • Dell XPS 15 2-In-1 W/ Intel 8th Gen & AMD Radeon RX Vega - Needless to say, graphics performance definitely looks promising for these new 8th generation Intel Core processors with AMD graphics.
  • Windows 8.1 Mainstream Support Ends - Windows 8.1 has now moved into the Extended Support phase of its lifecycle, which means that customers can no longer request to have changes made to the OS or add new features. Non-security updates are only available with Extended Hotfix Support, and complimentary support from Microsoft gives way to paid support options. About the only good thing about Extended Support is that security updates will continue to be pushed out to Windows 8.1 systems. According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 Extended Support will end five years from today, on January 10th, 2023. At that point, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates (except in extremely rare situations).
  • Google's Fuchsia OS on the Pixelbook: It works! It actually works! - It's worth mentioning, once again, that Fuchsia probably has a long way to go. Android took five years at Google to become a consumer operating system, while Fuchsia has only been in development for about two years. For a few reasons, Fuchsia might even take longer than Android to hit version 1.0. By all accounts Android's initial development was a rush job at Google, as the company hurriedly tried to whip together an answer to the headline-grabbing first-gen iPhone. Today, Google has more than 80 percent of the smartphone OS marketshare, so it has no reason to rush Fuchsia out the door.
  • MacBook Users Claim Apple Overstates Standby Battery Life - Reports on Apple's Support Communities and other discussion groups suggest that MacBooks are not living up to their promise of "up to 30 days standby time." Their batteries are supposedly draining at 2 to 10 times the normal rate during standby, leaving the laptops dead after only 3 to 15 days. Apple is calling this 'normal behavior.' Reaching out to Apple CEO Tim Cook directly, Antoniou said he was contacted by spokesperson Shane Barton, who told him that "there was nothing wrong with [the battery] according to Apple," and "even blocked the local Apple store from letting me pay for a new battery."
  • iPhone X Reported to Have Overheating Problems - It's been reported that several customers over in the Apple forums are stating that their iPhone X is overheating for no reason at all. Some have said they even put the phone in the freezer to cool it down and that didn't help. At this point in time it's too soon to say this is a wide-spread issue, but it's worth keeping an eye on. Also, beside the overheating issue, some users are beginning to suspect Apple is using some kind of enhancement that uses the cellular connection for some reason even if they have wifi turned on and connected. In addition to the overheating, some iPhone X owners are also starting to believe that Apple's new device uses a lot more cellular data than earlier models and that iPhone X "has enhancements that might use cellular data regardless of a wifi connection." Apple hasn't provided any insight into what those "enhancements" are or if they can be turned off but it could be quite worrying for individuals with low data tariffs who ensure that they stay connected to WiFi to stay within their data limitations.
  • Intel AMT security hole lets hackers take control of corporate laptops - The way the attack is accomplished is by rebooting the computer and then entering the boot menu. In most circumstances, this is the end of the line for an attacker because any competent IT pro would have enabled the BIOS password and the exploit could go no further. However, on AMT machines, the attacker can select Intel's Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) and log in using the default password 'admin.'
  • World's most powerful mobile spyware can read WhatsApp messages - Security firm Kaspersky has uncovered a new Android spyware tool that's being described as one of the most powerful and advanced forms of mobile malware ever. Named after one of the domains where it was first identified, Skygofree can perform a number of malicious activities, including recording audio and reading WhatsApp messages. While Kaspersky discovered Skygofree in late 2017, it's been around and evolving since 2014. What makes the spyware particularly insidious is the way it's distributed through fake sites designed to look like those from mobile carriers. The tool is advertised as a piece of software designed to increase the internet speeds of anyone who downloads it.
  • iOS Update to Let iPhone Owners Keep Phones Running Fast - Apple plans to give iPhone owners more control over their devices, particularly the battery and performance, says CEO Tim Cook. Speaking to ABCNews, Cook addressed the issue concerning older iPhone batteries. The company admitted late last year that it slows down the performance of some devices in order to prevent them from shutting down. End users often complain that their devices feel slow after updating the software.
  • Google Sends Security Patch to Pixel Phones - Google has sent a fresh security patch to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets. Google says the update "fixes critical bugs and improves the performance and stability" of the Pixel smartphones. The update is about 50 MB and can be downloaded over the air. Google normally issues security patches at the beginning of each month. This mid-month update is atypical. Google has also begun distributing Google Play Services 11.9.74 beta, which contains fixes for the Chromecast WiFi-sapping bug revealed earlier this week. The Play Services update is being pushed in limited numbers. Google hasn't said when the final version of Play Services 11.9.74, with the Chromecast patch, will reach all devices.
  • Google Rolling Out Fix For Wi-Fi Killing Bug - In a post on a Google Home Help page, Google has announced they have identified the bug that was causing many users' router to be hammered with requests and subsequently freezing. These issues were most commonly reported by those who own a TP-Link Archer C7 router. Though initial user reports suggested it was strictly TP-Link routers that had these issues, Android Police has since found that users with Linksys and Synology routers have faced similar problems. If you were unlucky enough to be affected by one or more of these issues, you won't need to toss your Chromecast or Google Home device out just yet as Google is on the case. Today, the company started rolling out updates via Google Play services that should address these issues entirely. If the update is taking a while to hit your device, you can opt to download the Google Play Services 11.9.74 beta APK to get access to the fix ASAP.
  • Cisco can now sniff out malware inside encrypted traffic - Cisco has switched on latent features in its recent routers and switches, plus a cloud service, that together make it possible to detect the fingerprints of malware in encrypted traffic. Those devices can't do the job alone: users need to sign up for Cisco's StealthWatch service and let traffic from their kit flow to a cloud-based analytics service that inspects traffic and uses self-improving machine learning algorithms to spot dodgy traffic.
  • OnePlus Confirms 40,000 Customers' Data at Risk - OnePlus has said up to 40,000 customers' credit card data may have been lifted in an attack. Earlier this week, OnePlus customers reported fraudulent activity on their credit cards after making purchases from OnePlus' web site. OnePlus says its investigation shows the company was indeed compromised.

  • YouTube Announces Stricter Criteria For Monetization - YouTube has announced today that moving forward it wi be tougher to get a partnership and run ads on videos. Previously, channels had to reach 10,000 total views to be eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Starting today, new channels will need to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months to be eligible for ads. We will begin enforcing these new requirements for existing channels in YPP beginning February 20th, 2018.
  • Amazon Raises Price of Prime Monthly Memberships by Nearly 20 Percent - If you pay for Amazon Prime on a monthly basis, be prepared to spend a little more: the fee is increasing from $10.99 to $12.99 ($156 a year). The annual $99 option is seeing no changes, but it may just be a matter of time before that goes up, too, as Amazon continues to introduce more and more benefits.

  • Fully autonomous, manual control-free vehicles by 2019 - GM recently filed a Safety Petition with the Department of Transportation, asking for permission to "safely deploy self-driving [vehicles] in 2019." The vehicle GM plans to deploy, dubbed the Cruise AV, will reportedly be the "first production-ready vehicle built from the start to operate safely on its own." The company released a short video offering us a sneak peek at what the vehicle may look like when it rolls out of GM's factories. Not only will the vehicle reportedly be capable of driving itself, it doesn't have any manual controls at all - there's no steering wheel and no brake or gas pedals to be seen. Designing a vehicle from the ground up with full automation in mind is a bold move, given that the company has yet to receive approval to deploy the vehicle to begin with, but one that could usher in the age of full autonomy much more quickly if it proves successful.
