Real Time Graphics are Progressing Nicely - tech
(hx) 06:57 PM CEST - Apr,26 2018 - Post a comment
What happens when you ignore performance, memory, technical limitations and purely focus on getting it right? Would you still produce roughly the same results? Would you be able to get closer to photo realism? Knowing that the movie industry has managed to fool us more than once by creating realistic images, what would it take for games to look and feel the same?

GeForce Game Ready 397.31 WHQL drivers - tech
(hx) 09:54 AM CEST - Apr,26 2018 - Post a comment
As expected NVIDIA has released GeForce 397.31 WHQL drivers (Win10 64-bit here). The drivers see NVIDIA discontinue regular support for 32-bit versions of Windows. It also sheds support for GPUs based on NVIDIA "Fermi" GPU architecture (GeForce 400 series and 500 series). The drivers also add first official support for NVIDIA RTX real-time ray-tracing technology. To use it, you'll need a GPU based on NVIDIA's next-generation "Volta" architecture (such as the $3,000 TITAN V), the latest major version of Windows 10, and Microsoft DXR developer package. The drivers also add support for Vulkan 1.1 API. Besides the above three, GeForce 397.31 WHQL is game-ready for "BattleTech" and "FrostPunk."

Nvidia GTX 1180 specs and performance data leaks out - tech
(hx) 11:47 PM CEST - Apr,18 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
Nvidia managed to keep the next gen GeForce GTX 11xx family of GPUs under wraps pretty well up until now, but this did not really stop speculators to extrapolate all the available data and come up with a preliminary specs sheet and performance projections. The guys over at WCCFTech put together a list of GTX 1180 specs and expected performance, however, strangely enough, they do not cite any sources, so the usual salt disclaimer should apply here, as well. First of all, it’s still not clear if Nvidia will use the Turing or the Ampere architecture, both derived from the Volta one released last year. The new GPUs will be manufactured using the 12 nm FinFET process and the die size will be around 400 square mm. Based on the original Volta specs, the GTX 1180 could come with 3584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs and 64 ROPs, while the core clock could be set at 1.6 GHz (1.8 GHz boost). On the memory side, the interface should not change from the current 256-bit one. Bandwidth and transfer speeds will theoretically reach 512 GB/s and 16 Gbps, respectively, thanks to the new GDDR6 memory that should come in 8/16 GB configurations. The expected TDP is somewhere between 170-200 W. Regarding the actual performance numbers, the GTX 1180 could end up 50% faster than the GTX 1080 and around 10% faster than the Titan Xp, at least in 2560 x 1440 tests. The next gen GPU could be even faster in 1080p, but the real improvement should be seen in 4K tests.

TechNews - New AMD Ryzen CPUs - tech
(hx) 01:29 PM CEST - Apr,14 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • New AMD Ryzen CPUs Announced - AMD announces their second generation Ryzen CPUs, saying they are already accepting preorders for the new processors, and they offer the following details on why you may be interested.
  • Intel Expands 8th Gen Core: Core i9 on Mobile, Iris Plus, Desktop, Chipsets, and vPro - The headline is that Intel’s mobile platform will now get Core i9 and Core i7 products with six cores at 45W, along with some 28W U-series mobile chips with Iris Plus graphics. Desktop also gets some extra chips, filling out the Coffee Lake stack for desktop users, and vPro is littered around both mobile and desktop. Also on the plate is new branding for 8th Gen Core products being used with Intel’s Optane drives, new mobile and desktop chipsets which include wireless capabilities and USB 3.1, and Intel’s new ‘Thermal Velocity Boost’ which promises more frequency in devices that can handle the thermal stress.
  • Apple Rumored To Ditch Intel Processors In Macs By 2020 - If you've been following Apple for the past decade, then you know that the company has become adept at producing its own silicon for iPhones and iPads. Apple's A-Series SoCs are performance juggernauts, often outpacing their Qualcomm Snapdragon 8xx rivals in cross-platform benchmarks versus Android devices. That same chip design prowess, which has paid dividends for Apple's mobile fortunes, might also transfer to its PC products as well, according to a new report. Bloomberg, which often obtains some rather accurate details about Apple's unreleased product lines, says that the company will begin ditching Intel as a supplier of processors for its Macs as soon as 2020. Intel shares were down 6 percent on the news. These ARM processors are part of an initiative reportedly dubbed Kalamata. It is highly likely that the first products to make the transition would be thin and light notebooks like the 12-inch MacBook, and then expands to the rest of the MacBook Pro (and Air) families. Things would definitely get more interesting when it comes to Apple's desktop family, which include the iMac, iMac Pro and the Mac Pro (which is due for a redesign). In the case of the iMac Pro, it's currently available with up to an 18-core Intel Xeon W processor. There is nothing in Apple's current arsenal that can deliver that sort of firepower, but there's no telling what the company's secret chip skunkworks is up to at this point.
  • The Best Storage Devices: SSD, HDD, External Drives & NAS - The SSD 960 Evo showed no faults throughout in testing back in 2016 and its price vs. performance ratio remains largely unparalleled, being even more affordable today at $200 for around 40 cents a gig for the 500GB version. Offering sequential reads and writes of 3,200MB/s and 1,800MB/s, the 960 Evo is available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB versions, though the smaller drive will cut down on performance, so our buying recommendation exclusively applies to 500GB and larger variants.
  • ASIC Miners and Cryptocurrency - This is actually a very good article over at Motherboard about ASICs and what sort of wide reaching effects those could have on the cryptocurrency markets, specifically Monero and Ethereum.
  • HARD DRIVE Mining? This is getting ridiculous... - Hard drive mining... could this be the solution to the GPU crisis?
  • Samsung's DeX Pad for Galaxy S9 Arrives May 13 for $99 - Samsung today revealed that the DeX Pad docking station for its new Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones will be available starting next month. The company is accepting preorders online for the accessory, with a stated ship date of May 13. This revised accessory turns the S9/S9+ into a mobile PC. It connects the phone to monitors, keyboards, and mouses (wired or wireless) and allows it to act like a full computer, complete with multitasking. New on this year's product is the ability to use the S9/S9+ screen as a trackpad when in computer mode. The phone connects to the dock via USB-C and will charge when in use. The DeX Pad costs $99.99.
  • Honor 7A makes its debut with 18:9 display and $130 price tag - Honor 7A packs quite an assortment of features like its 5.7-inch 720p 18:9 display, a Snapdragon 430 processor, and can be picked up in either a 2GB or 3GB RAM configuration, with 32GB of internal storage, and microSD card support. The phone will also have a dual camera setup utilizing a 13MP and 2MP sensor on the rear and an 8MP front-facing camera
  • uTorrent Flagged as Threat by Microsoft and Antivirus Vendors - TorrentFreak is reporting that this week several Windows users that the uTorrent BitTorrent client was suddenly being flagged as a threat by Windows Defender as "Potentially Unwanted Software." The article goes on to state that other Antivirus software has been labeling uTorrent as a threat, and the uTorrent download page now triggers a warning from MalwareBytes real-time protection. If you use BitTorrent to get your latest Linux distro, you may want to stray away from uTorrent. I know personally I never updated passed 1.6 until switching to qBittorrent a couple years ago. Based on what I saw from later versions of uTorrent, this news isn't all that surprising.
  • Try Google's New OS In Your Browser -  Google has been fighting with itself for a long time having Android and Chrome OS overlapping each other, and now Slash Gear is reporting that Google is apparently working on a third wheel. "Andromeda" was a rumor that had started from people thinking that Google would merge their two current operating systems together, however Google Fuchsia is a new OS built from the ground up that you can play with today in your browser.
  • Gmail.com redesign includes self-destructing emails - Set expiration dates and password requirements on your sensitive emails.
  • Google Details April Security Patch with Pixel Fixes Aplenty - Google today shared information about the April security patch headed to Pixel handsets over the next few days. The update tackles dozens of vulnerabilities. Google is pushing two separate updates, dated April 1 and April 5, that improve Google Play Protect, Google Mobile Services, the Android media framework, Android runtime, and the core kernel. In particular, Google says it worked with Qualcomm to resolve scores of existing vulnerabilities impacting Qualcomm hardware and drivers back to 2016. The April security patches are being made available to Google's Pixel and Nexus phones first. It is up to individual device makers to implement the fixes on their own hardware
  • Phone Makers Mislead Consumers About Security Patches - Security Research Labs says Android phone makers often miss security patches but still tell owners the phones are up-to-date. Researchers Karsten Nohl and Jakob Lell examined the code of some 1,200 phones from more than a dozen phone makers for every security patch released during 2017. They discovered phones from nearly all makers missed at least some patches. Phones from Google, Sony, and Samsung ranked fairly well, missing an average of just one patch. Phones from Xiaomi, Nokia, and OnePlus missed between one and three patches per update, while devices from HTC, Motorola, LG, and Huawei missed three to four, and phones from TCL (Alcatel) and ZTE often missed more than four patches per update. High-end devices with processors from Samsung or Qualcomm were more likely to updated properly, while low-cost devices with processors from MediaTek were less likely to be updated properly. Nohl and Lell say what's worse than the missed patches are the phone makers' claims to the contrary. "We find that there's a gap between patching claims and the actual patches installed on a device. It's small for some devices and pretty significant for others," said Nohl to Wired.
  • How To Increase His 16GB iPhone's Storage By 800% - Scotty Allen, who runs the YouTube channel Strange Parts, journeyed around Shenzhen, China to get the parts he needed to boost his iPhone's storage. It was harder than he expected.
  • iOS Update Bricks Repaired iPhones Again - Motherboard reports that if you have had your screen repaired on your iPhone 8 by anyone other than Apple, and have updated to iOS 11.3, you likely already know your phone no longer responds to touch commands. Apple released iOS 11.3 at the end of March, and the update is killing touch functionality in iPhone 8s repaired with some aftermarket screens that worked prior to the update. That means people who broke their phone and had the audacity to get it repaired by anyone other than Apple is having a hard time using their phone. "This has caused my company over 2,000 reshipments," Aakshay Kripalani, CEO of Injured Gadgets, a Georgia-based retailer and repair shop, told me in a Facebook message. "Customers are annoyed and it seems like Apple is doing this to prevent customers from doing 3rd party repair."

This message was then promptly leaked to Bloomberg, where it can be read in its entirety. These leaks come from direct employees, contractors, and suppliers and include information about future products and software features. In the strongly worded memo, Apple describes their commitment to stopping and punishing such leakers. They claim to have caught 29 employees last year and 12 of them were eventually arrested

  • Instagram to Let Users Download Their Content - Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is preparing a tool that will eventually make it simpler for users to download all the photos, videos, messages, and other content they've uploaded to the imaging-based social network. "We are building a new data portability tool," said Instagram in an email to Reuters. Specifics concerning how the tool might work and when it might be released were not revealed. The news arrives as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent the last two days answering Congress' questions on Capitol Hill in the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The social network has taken steps the last few weeks to ensure users have easier access to and control over their own data.
  • Instagram Debuts Advanced Portrait Mode - Instagram today announced a new feature that makes it easier to capture artistic selfies or portraits. The tool, called Focus, lets people take pictures or video of people using either the front or rear camera with gently blurred backgrounds. Focus seeks out faces in the viewfinder and locks on to create sharp focus on the face. Once the media is captured, users can then apply stickers or otherwise dress up their portraits or videos before sharing. Focus is available on the iPhone 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+ and X, and select Android devices. Instagram is also rolling out a new @mention sticker feature for iOS devices. iPhone users can capture pictures or video and then tag friends using the sticker creation tool. Stickers with @mentions can be resized and moved around as users deem fit. Instagram is free to download from the Google Play Store and the iTunes App Store
  • Snapchat's TrueDepth Lenses for iPhone X Now Live - Snapchat has made a handful of lenses available specifically for the iPhone X. These lenses, first previewed last year, take advantage of the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone X and its 3D face-mapping capabilities. The result is more accurate and more form-fitting augmented reality masks that appear on users' faces. There are three AR Snapchat lenses to start, a gold eye mask, a Day of the Dead skull, and a Mardi Gras-style mask. Snapchat says the TrueDepth camera allows it to blur the background and more accurately handle ambient light with these lenses. The new lenses will only appear to those using Snapchat on an iPhone X. More are likely to be made available over time. Snapchat is free to download from the iTunes App Store

"PUBG" Ransomware - tech
(hx) 07:02 PM CEST - Apr,10 2018 - Post a comment
Before you forget that it is not April Fool's Day, this actually looks to be a real thing. This PUBG Ransomware does not go in search of your hard earned cash, but rather will decrypt your hijacked files if you play PUBG for an hour (actually you just have the run an executable for 3 seconds). It does however just give you the key to decrypt as well if an hour's worth of PUBG is not your thing.
Discovered by MalwareHunterTeam, when the PUBG Ransomware is launched it will encrypt a user's files and folders on the user's desktop and append the .PUBG extension to them. When it has finished encrypting the files, it will display a screen giving you two methods that you can use to decrypt the encrypted files.

As stated in the ransom instructions, the first method that can be used to decrypt the files is to simply enter the "s2acxx56a2sae5fjh5k2gb5s2e" code into the program and click the Restore button.

If you want to be fancy, though, the ransomware also checks to see if your playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds by monitoring the running processes for one named "TslGame" as shown below. Even though the ransom note states you need to run it for 1 hour, you only need to run the executable for 3 seconds.

Once a user plays the game and the process is detected, the ransomware will automatically decrypt the victim's files. This ransomware is not too advanced as it only looks for the process name and does not check for other information to confirm that the game is actually being played. That means you can simply run any executable called TslGame.exe and it will decrypt the files.

Game Load Times on HDD and SSD - tech
(hx) 10:46 PM CEST - Apr,09 2018 - Post a comment / read (5)
Nasty Nathan Kirsch of Legit Reviews fame has put together a good read on real world load times when it comes to games. He takes a look at six SSDs and throws in a 10TB spinning drive for good measure. He covers traditional SATA drives as well as M.2 drives, and throws and Intel Optane PCIe drive into the mix.
Many gamers have their gaming PC configured with an SSD for a boot drive and a hard drive for mass storage. Therefore the first performance test we ran was on the Seagate Barracuda Pro 10TB hard drive ($349.98 shipped) and this 7200RPM SATA III 3.5-inch internal hard drive averaged 42.388 seconds game load times on FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood. This is our baseline performance number, so next we tested the ‘old’ circa 2015 Crucial BX200 value SATA III SSD that featured 2D Planer TLC NAND Flash memory. Game load times improved to 33.885 seconds by moving from a HDD to an SSD, which is an improvement of just over 20%. This is the significant performance increase that most gamers sense when they upgrade to an SSD for the very first time.

We then ran a 2TB drive from the worlds best selling SSD series, which is the Samsung SSD 850 EVO. This drive series uses Samsung V-NAND (3D TLC NAND) and we saw performance improve once again, but not to the degree that we saw from moving from a HDD to an SSD. We are seeing about a 23% improvement over the HDD, but only about 4% over the Crucial BX200 series drive. The Samsung SSD 850 EVO 2TB drive runs $749.99 shipped, which puts it out of reach for many despite costing under $0.38 per GB. The good news is that the Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB drive has similar performance is only $154 shipped or $0.31 per GB.

Next, we tested four PCIe NVMe drives to see how they would perform over SATA III SSDs. First up we have the Kingston A1000 that is a value drive series was just released here in 2018. The 1TB model that we tested performed about half a second better than the Crucial BX200, but was actually slower than the Samsung SSD 850 EVO drive. PCIe NVMe drives look great on paper, but this just goes to show that PCIe NVMe drives might not be better than SATA III drives for gamers when it comes to load times. This is also why when some users upgrade from a SATA III SSD to a PCIe NVMe SSD that they don’t notice any difference.

  • Nvidia GTC 2018 Highlights: AI Trucks, Mega-Video Cards & Ray Tracing - Nvidia's yearly GPU Technology Conference (GTC) was overflowing with demos, presentations, tutorials, and sessions. As expected, AI and deep learning topics dominated the show. Sadly, Nvidia didn't announce new cards for gaming. The company did announce a new Tesla-powered Quadro professional graphics card and what it bills as 'The World's Largest GPU,' which is actually sixteen Tesla GV100 GPUs crammed into a single chassis that draws a mind-bending 10kW of power.
  • Corsair Wants to Stop GPU Abuse - Corsair has released a new video to raise awareness for GPU abuse
  • New VR Controller Brings KB+Mouse Accuracy to VR Gaming - The controller is called the Po!nt and it has the W-A-S-D setup we're all familiar with and a few other keys used frequently by KB players. It can be customized for all of your games and the company claims almost all of the initial feedback on the product is positive. However, I'm not a VR player yet so I can't really opine on whether I think it's going to work so I'd like some of our resident VR players to chime in on this one.
  • Canon's 120 megapixel image sensor captures video in frightening details -  In Canon's latest video, we can see the incredibly high detail that a sensor of this caliber is capable of capturing. Fine details that are lost in standard Full HD are readily apparent with the 120 megapixel solution. It's impressive, no doubt, but also a bit frightening. The stadium scene, specifically, shows what's possible in terms of surveillance when you've got an ultra-high resolution camera at your disposal.
  • Windows on ARM: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 vs. Intel Celeron N3450 - When the Snapdragon fails to get even close to a measly Atom-based Celeron processor in a number of workloads, you're not going to get a good real world experience. When you use the device with a desktop app like Excel or Photoshop, it's easy to get frustrated by how sluggish, laggy and unimpressive the performance is. Using a Celeron N3450 is tough when you're used to Core i5 or i7 performance, and the Snapdragon 835 is significantly worse than this.
  • Huawei's P20 Series Boasts Gradient Paint and Advanced Cameras  - Huawei has introduced the P20 and P20 Pro at an event in Paris. The new phones, direct competitors to Apple's iPhone, are high-end devices that include unique colors, powerful processors, and the newest camera technology. Shared features of the P20 and P20 Pro include metal frames with gradient, painted 3D glass panels on the back. Huawei says the colors were inspired by Monet. The 2:1 displays on front feature notches at the top to hold the user-facing camera and sensors. The notch can be "hidden" with software that blacks out the info bar on the screen. Huawei has improved its facial recognition security software, which now works in the dark by illuminating the display. The P20 and P20 Pro carry over Huawei's premiere Kirin 970 processor with neural processing unit and Master AI to recognize scenes (group shots, landscapes) and objects (dogs, cats). The P20 series ads Master Stabilization software that allows owners to take exposures up to 4 seconds in length without using a tripod. The selfie camera on both phones has a 24-megapixel sensor with a lens at f/2.4. Other specs include 128 GB of storage, USB-C, Cat 18 LTE, Bluetooth 4.2 with aptHD+, and rapid charging. The phones ship with Android 8.1 and Huawei's EMUI 8.
  • Apple launches new $299 iPad with Pencil support - At an education event held in Chicago, Apple has unveiled its newest iPad to date poised to compete with the abundance of Chromebooks found in schools. The latest rendition features a 9.7-inch display with an A10 Fusion chip. Weighing in at one pound, the new iPad is as light as ever. Despite Apple's push for Face ID on the iPhone X, a Touch ID fingerprint reader remains a part of the home button.
  • Apple iWork Suite Update Targets Education - Apple today updated is entire suite of iWork productivity apps for iPhones, iPads, and Mac devices. The changes primarily tackle educational use of these apps and focus on bringing new features to Apple's mobile devices. For example, the apps now allow people to draw, write, or annotate documents using the Apple Pencil (on supported iPads) or your finger. A new Smart Annotation tool lets people add comments and marks that remain anchored to the text as files are shared via iCloud and/or Box. iWork adds digital book templates, the ability to add an image gallery, and new paragraph and character styles. People can use presenter mode to read and auto-scroll text while giving a speech, while iWork now lets people view pages side-by-side as they work, or turn on facing pages to format documents as two-page spreads. Other new tools include master pages to keep design consistent across layouts, instant document reorientation (landscape/portrait), editable shapes, donut charts, conditional highlighting, and fraction formatting. The iWork apps, which include Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, are free to download from the iTunes and Mac App Stores.
  • Microsoft Edge Now Available on iOS and Android - Microsoft has announced today that Microsoft Edge is now available for free on the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. The mobile versions allow you to share favorites, reading lists, and passwords across all your devices, and is available a few languages, including 5 versions of English for the Android version!
  • Apple Releases iOS 11.3 for iPhones - Apple has made iOS 11.3 available to the general public after testing it privately the last few months. First, iOS 11.3 provides iPhone users with more control over their phone's battery performance. People can asses the health of their iPhone's battery to see whether or not it needs to be replaced. The tool also allows people to turn off Apple's power management function that is used to prevent battery shutdowns at the expense of speed. iOS 11.3 introduces four new animoji for the iPhone X: a bear, lion, dragon, and skull, making for a total of 16. iOS 11.3 improves augmented reality for iPhones by expanding the ability to map surfaces to include horizontal and vertical surfaces. This means AR apps can place virtual objects on walls and doors, in addition to floors and tables. Apple says the iPhone's camera is now able to offer 50% greater resolution when shooting AR, and can take advantage of auto-focus for sharper results. iOS 11.3 adds a new tool to iMessage that will allow iPhone owners to chat with select businesses. Some early adopters include Discover, Hilton, Lowe's, and Wells Fargo. Through this new business chat feature, people can converse with service representatives, schedule appointments, and make purchases via Apple Pay. iOS 11.3 adds a new Health Records feature that lets health providers share patient health data in an easy-to-digest format. Patients can collect their health records from various institutions and view them in a single place on the iPhone. The health records support notifications for lab results, medications, conditions, and more. Apple says this data is encrypted and password-protected. Other features in iOS 11.3 include the addition of music videos to Apple Music, more video content within Apple News, software authentication for HomeKit devices, and support for Advanced Mobile Location so more accurate location data is made available to emergency services during 911 calls. iOS 11.3 is free to download from Apple.

  • New BranchScope Attack Vector for Intel CPUs - BranchScope is a newly identified side-channel attack that can be used on Skylake, Haswell, and Sandy Bridge CPUs. Dmitry Evtyushkin, one of the people involved in this research, told SecurityWeek that while they have not been tested, the microcode updates released by Intel in response to Meltdown and Spectre might only fix the BTB vector, which means BranchScope attacks could still be possible. However, Intel told the researchers that software guidance for mitigating Spectre Variant 1 could be effective against BranchScope attacks as well.
  • Meltdown Malware Patch That Opens Other Holes Fixed on Windows 7 - Microsoft just issued a March 2018 patch for the January 2018 patch that was directed at fixing a Meltdown malware attack vector according to Bleeping Computer. Make sure if you still use those operating systems that you have both of these patches installed. This issue affected only 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Frisk said. We say affected because Microsoft patched the bug by flipping the PML4 permission bit back to its original value in this month's Patch Tuesday.

Under Armour believes the hackers made off with usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords. Data such as social security numbers, driver's license numbers, and payment card data was not accessed. Under Armour began notifying impacted users within several days of the breach. The notice provides users with recommendation on steps they can take to protect their information. Under Armour is encouraging all users to change their passwords immediately. The investigation into the nature of the breach is ongoing and Under Armour will provide more information as it is available. Customers can find more information on a FAQ posted to the company's web site. • Monero Crypto Not as Anonymous as You Might Think - If you have been mining Monero on your Threadripper, then using that cryptocurrency for buying hookers and blow, you might want to be aware those some of those older Monero transactions are not as private as you might think. All of which means Monero may continue to leak small amounts of information that could be used to point to likely spenders—even if not providing a smoking gun. Even so, the researchers warn that small information leaks can build up over time, and can be combined with other data sources to provide that more concrete evidence. Perhaps more disturbingly for Monero users who spent coins before its privacy improvements, indelible fingerprints could lead to their front door. And that points to a more fundamental problem for cryptocurrencies offering privacy: Any security flaw discovered in the future might apply retroactively, allowing observers to dig up old skeletons buried in the currency's blockchain.

NVIDIA GeForce 391.35 WHQL driver - tech
(hx) 04:39 PM CEST - Mar,27 2018 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the latest version of its GeForce software suite. Version 391.35 WHQL drivers are game-ready for "Far Cry 5," the week's biggest AAA game release. This includes game optimization, an SLI profile, and GeForce Experience optimal settings. The drivers also add SLI profiles for "WRC 7" and GRIP. The drivers also introduce security updates for a staggering seven CVEs, mostly relating vulnerabilities discovered in the kernel-mode layers of the driver, and user-mode drivers for DirectX and OpenGL. NVIDIA discovered that certain specially crafted pixel shaders can cause infinite loops and denial of service (system hang), or escalation of privileges. Besides these, the drivers patch a memory leak found in NVIDIA Freestyle (custom shader tool), bugs with 3D Profile Manager, and a game freeze noticed on "Diablo III" when rapidly switching tasks on SLI machines.
Game Ready
Provides the optimal gaming experience for Far Cry 5.

  • How to Choose the Right CPU for 1080p Gaming: 14 Processors Compared - Balance is the goal here. Intel's Core i7-8700K is the first chip we think of when it comes to top-of-the-line for gaming PCs. But it doesn't always lead in our benchmarks. It would likely fare better with more heavily threaded titles tested. Otherwise, the Core i5-8600K seems to be a better value pairing for Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080. The GeForce GTX 1070 pairs well with either a Core i5-8600K or Ryzen 7 1800X, though the latter notably offers additional performance in other enthusiast-oriented desktop apps.
  • Intel has microcode updates for modern CPUs and fixed silicon for  - Krzanich has made a blog post that says the company has microcode updates ready for all of its products released in the past five years, and that CPUs with "hardware-based protection" for the security flaws will launch toward the end of 2018. Those microcode updates include every one of the company's processors back to the launch of the Haswell family in 2013. It's worth noting that Intel's also cooking up microcode updates for CPUs as old as 2007's Conroe series. Unfortunately, not every system may have Intel's updated microcode available as a firmware update. Intel has a whole site dedicated to helping users deal with Meltdown and Spectre, and down the page a bit there's a list of manufacturers with links to their own pages about the flaws. The upcoming chips with hardware-based protection against Meltdown and Spectre include the next generation of Xeon Scalable processors (code-named Cascade Lake) as well as another run of eighth-generation Core CPUs. In the blog post, Krzanich tacitly admits that the Spectre Variant 1 vulnerability won't be fixed by updated hardware and will "continue to be addressed via software mitigations." That's not really a surprise given the nature of the flaw, as it exploits fundamental concepts in modern microprocessor design. Intel doesn't say exactly what it's done to help mitigate Meltdown and Spectre in the upcoming CPUs, but Krzanich notes that the company "redesigned parts of the processor to introduce new levels of protection through partitioning."

  • Microsoft wants to force Windows 10 Mail users to open links in Edge - When Microsoft released Windows 10 build 17623 to Skip Ahead today, one of the "changes, improvements, and fixes" listed was that the company is going to start testing a feature that will force users of the Windows 10 Mail app to open links in the Edge browser. Dona Sarkar, who wrote the blog post, said that Edge "provides the best, most secure and consistent experience on Windows 10 and across your devices." The only problem is that not everyone feels that way. Many users have Chrome, Firefox, or something else set as their default browser, and Microsoft wants to subvert that in order to get them to use its own in-house solution. Luckily, Windows 10's default Mail app isn't the only email client that you can use. Luckily, Microsoft is only testing the feature, and it will take feedback from the Windows Insider community. Depending on how that goes, it may decide to push the feature. But make no mistake, despite the fact that this showed up in a Redstone 5 build, it will be made available through a Mail & Calendar app update, meaning that this could be pushed through at any time.
  • Microsoft Admits It Incorrectly Upgraded Some Windows 10 Users To - Microsoft has admitted that it incorrectly updated some Windows 10 machines to version 1709 despite users having paused update operations in their OS settings according to a report from BleepingComputer. Parents have long been able to manage iTunes purchases, control content, set time/usage limits, see location data, share calendars and iTunes purchases, and more. The new Families web page is meant to serve as a central resource. It describes in detail how parents can reduce distracted driving for teens, set family groups and manage communications, find lost devices, and so on. The web site arrives after shareholders published an open letter earlier this year asking the company to address smartphone addiction.

  • Google Home Lets People Set Reminders That Ping Their Phone - Google has this week added several new features to Google Home that make the product more useful. First, people can now set reminders on their Google Home that are triggered by their phone's location. For example, at home, say, "Hey Google, set a reminder to pick up more coffee at the grocery store," and Google Assistant will remind you on your phone when you're actually at the grocery store. This is an expansion of a feature Google first announced last month. Second, routines are now more widely available. Routines string together a handful of actions that are triggered by a specific catch phrase. For example, people can ask Google to tell them about their day and get the news, weather, and traffic information they need first thing in the morning. Routines can now proactively turn off mobile devices' silent mode, and even interact with Assistant-powered appliances. Google is offering a half dozen routines to start, including morning, leaving home, bedtime, and so on. Users can easily customize the routines, and even ensure Google Assistant recognizes individual users for personalized routines. The new tools are free to use.

Early adopters of the handset have taken to Samsung's forums to voice complaints about the issue, which renders areas of the display unresponsive to touch input. "At Samsung, customer satisfaction is core to our business and we aim to deliver the best possible experience. We are looking into a limited number of reports of Galaxy S9/S9+ touchscreen responsiveness issues. We are working with affected customers and investigating," said Samsung in a statement provided to CNET. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ reached store shelves March 16.
  • Samsung reportedly testing multiple solutions to embed fingerprint sensor in Note 9 display - A source familiar with the matter recently told The Korea Herald that Samsung's display arm has prepared “three or four” solutions for Samsung Electronics to embed a fingerprint sensor inside the main display of the Galaxy Note 9. Both divisions are said to be “seriously considering” one of the solutions. The source added that the delay in finalizing the concept for the phone is due to the work in adopting the in-display fingerprint sensor. A final decision on adopting the technology will be made by the end of the month, the source said. That should still give Samsung enough time to manufacture the phone without any significant delays. The publication notes that in previous years, the concept for a flagship phone has been finalized about five months before launch. If finalized by the end of the month as the source indicates, that would put the launch somewhere around late August or early September - right in the middle of Samsung's usual Note launch window.

Two other lawsuits filed by shareholders Fan Yuan and Robert Casey are also seeking class-action cases. The fourth lawsuit is perhaps the one with the most potential, however. Filed by San Francisco-based attorney Jeremiah Hallisey, the legal action is reportedly a "shareholder derivative suit" filed on behalf of Facebook's shareholders against the company's leadership team. The suit's targets include company CEO Mark Zuckerburg, COO Sheryl Sandberg and Facebook's board members.

Real-Time Ray Tracing Star Wars Demo - tech
(hx) 11:12 PM CET - Mar,22 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
In the computer graphics community this week, companies from Nvidia to Microsoft have been stressing just how important real-time raytracing will be to making games look more movie-like in the near future. Epic Games used a striking demo at a Game Developers Conference keynote presentation this morning to show just how much better raytracing can make real-time, interactive graphics look with top-of-the-line hardware right now. The Star Wars "Reflections" demo, made with the cooperation of Nvidia and ILMxLAB, showed two extremely realistic-looking and talkative Stormtroopers clamming up in an elevator when the shiny Captain Phasma pops in. Running on what Epic still refers to as “experimental code” (planned to be introduced to Unreal Engine for production later this year) the raytracing in the demo allows background elements like the guns and the opening elevator doors to reflect accurately off Phasma’s mirror-like armor in real time. These are the kinds of effects that Epic CTO Kim Libreri highlights they’ve “never been able to do before [with rasterized graphics].”

  • Nvidia's GTX 2070 and 2080 cards could be unveiled next month - Speaking to TweakTown, a "well-placed source" in the industry said the first public showing would take place at Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference (GTC), which begins on March 26. The new cards will follow the current Pascal-based 10-series with either an 11-series or 20-series naming system, which means we could see the GTX 1180 or the GTX 2080. Whatever they're called, these new gaming GPUs are said to be based on the 12-nanometer Ampere architecture. It was thought that the new GeForce cards would use the same Volta architecture found in the Titan V and Tesla V100, but it now looks as if Volta will be reserved for Nvidia's top-end cards built for AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and deep learning.
  • The Intel Optane SSD 800p (58GB & 118GB) Review: Almost The Right Size - With today's prices, I would almost always choose a ~500GB 3D TLC SSD over the 118GB Optane SSD 800p. At 500GB and up, even the latest SSDs with 512Gb 3D TLC NAND don't really suffer the performance penalties of being too small, so the Optane SSD 800p's performance isn't a huge boost. It's always less of a hassle when your primary drive is big enough to hold most or all of your data, and drives like the Samsung 960 EVO or Intel SSD 760p (limited availability at the moment) are fast enough.
  • PCPer Male Bag Reaches 33# - This week the bag is full of Thunderbolt 3 usages, AMD stuffs, and the lack of DX12 games.
  • Upcoming Windows 10 update will bring a dedicated AI - Microsoft seems interested in kicking things up a notch as far as AI goes if their latest blog post is anything to go by. In the post, the company said the next "major update" for Windows 10 will arrive with a dedicated AI platform for developers. To be clear, making use of AI is nothing new for Microsoft. The company already uses machine learning for services like Windows Hello and Office 365. However, a developer-oriented AI platform could lead to some pretty significant improvements for many third-party Windows apps. This new AI platform, dubbed "Windows ML," will allow developers to take advantage of a user's PC resources to perform AI processing tasks, reducing or, in some cases, eliminating the need to use potentially expensive cloud processing solutions. According to Microsoft, this platform will be supporting the "industry standard" ONNX format for machine learning models, a format "driven by Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon Web Services." In addition to reducing operating costs, the upcoming ML platform could allow for much quicker, lower-latency AI processing. As Microsoft says in the blog post, "results can be delivered quickly and efficiently for use in performance-intensive workloads like game engines, or background tasks such as indexing for search." Developers will also be able to use some of Microsoft's pre-created machine learning systems to speed up generic AI tasks, further contributing to the aforementioned reduction in development costs.
  • Cortana gets Outlook integration - Although Cortana lacks many features its mainstream competitors had for many years, email integration will no longer be one of them. The company has officially rolled out Outlook integration for the Halo-inspired virtual assistant on Windows 10, and the Invoke. With this, it will allow you to ask if you received any new emails, and it will then respond with a list of senders and the message sent by them. Beyond that, it offers deeper functionality, that allows you to ask it for emails from a specific person or entity. Adding to this, it will also let you respond to these messages via dictation. Outlook integration for Cortana rolled out to a limited base for the time being, with those using the U.S. English language setting on Windows 10 getting access to it. Unfortunately, it does not function alongside iOS or Android devices yet. However, with it being Microsoft, this should change in due course.
  • Microsoft Says It Optimized Skype for Older, Slower Android Devices - Microsoft recently released an updated version of Skype for Android meant for older smartphones. Specifically, this down-tuned variant of Skype is intended for Android devices running 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich to 5.1 Lollipop. Microsoft says Skype for these phones uses less memory and less storage, allowing the app to run faster while also improving audio and video quality even in challenging network conditions. Microsoft is rolling out this update worldwide over the next few weeks. Those who want to download the app immediately can do so via the Skype Insiders Program. Skype is free from the Google Play Store.
  • Microsoft Selling Customized Variants of Samsung Galaxy S9 - Microsoft has added the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ to its online store. The devices are pre-configured with Microsoft apps and services. "A Microsoft customization is applied to the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Microsoft Edition when the devices are unboxed and connected to WiFi," explained Microsoft. When users first boot the device, they will be prompted to download Microsoft apps such as Office, Outlook, OneDrive, Cortana, and Microsoft's launcher for Android. Other than the software, the specs and features of the S9 and S9+ are unchanged from other versions of the phone. When purchased from Microsoft, the S9 and S9+ are unlocked. The S9 costs $720 and the S9+ costs $840.
  • AT&T Matches Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S9 Offer - Preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ start today and AT&T hopes its promotion will score with customers. Similar to Sprint's offer, AT&T will give customers up to $500 in account credits through combined promotions. First, customers who port in a number from a competing carrier will be rewarded with a $150 bill credit. Further, those who trade in a smartphone will receive a minimum of $200, and possibly as much as $350, in bill credits. Phones worth $350 on trade are the Apple iPhone 8, 8 Plus or iPhone X; LG V30; Google Pixel 2/XL Phones. Phones worth $300 on trade include any of the Samsung Galaxy S7 variants. With these offers combined, AT&T says the S9 price drops to as low $290, while the S9+ drops to $415. By way of comparison, Sprint is offering $350 off its S9/S9+ lease program and $150 via Visa gift card. The S9 is also sold by T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
  • Honor 7C shows off facial recognition feature in new leaked ad - The Honor 7C will be the firm's latest smartphone and will arrive with a 5.99-inch 18:9 720p display, dual cameras comprised of a 20MP and 13MP sensors, and a design that looks identical to the Honor 7X. If the ad is any indication, one of the handset's main attractions will be its ability to recognize a user's face and unlock the phone.
  • Xiaomi's upcoming Mi Mix 2S teased in new video - Xiaomi teased the newest addition to its bezel-less flagship series, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, in a video it released on MiaoPai, a Chinese streaming platform. It doesn't feature much in the way of engrossing content, outside of confirming the presence of the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC in the device through hand signs. While no other internals are confirmed, the rumor mill suggests that the Mix 2S will sport a 6" OLED screen in the newer 18:9 aspect ratio, along with a whopping 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. Some sources also say that it may feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen much like Vivo's recently announced handset, though again, this isn't officially confirmed.
  • Bill Gates: cryptocurrencies are killing people - Cryptocurrency tends to split opinion. Some people believe in digital currencies like bitcoin and maintain that their value will keep rising, while others call them Ponzi schemes beloved by criminals. After his Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session, it seems Bill Gates falls firmly into the latter camp. The former Microsoft CEO even said the technology "has caused deaths in a fairly direct way."  When asked for his opinion on cryptos, Gates said their main feature was the anonymity they offer, and he doesn't think this is a good thing. The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing. Right now cryptocurrencies are used for buying fentanyl and other drugs so it is a rare technology that has caused deaths in a fairly direct way, he explained.
  • Google Releases First Preview of Android P - Google today made the first preview of Android P available to developers. The revised version of Android adds a number of user-facing features as well as tools for app writers. For example, Android P tackles notifications for messaging. Users will be able to see image previews in notifications, as well as better see who sent the message and select auto-responses. A new API for developers gives them more power over devices with dual rear- or front-facing cameras, and Android P adopts supports for the HDR VP9 Profile 2 and HEIF multimedia formats. Android P brings with it support for "display cutouts" similar to the notch on the iPhone X.
  • Google Assistant Lets Device Makers Create Custom Actions - Google today introduced new Custom Device Actions for Google Assistant that will give devices native functionality specific to their hardware. • Google Maps Adds Mario Time for Navigation - Google today updated Google Maps for Android and iOS with a fun feature: Mario. Once users update to the latest version of Maps, they'll be able to turn on Mario Time for navigation. When activated, Mario will appear in place of the navigation arrow while driving, walking, or commuting. Google says the bonus feature is rolling out starting today and will be available for about a week.
  • Apple Confirms It Uses Google's Cloud for iCloud - In a report from CNBC, a file on Apple's website called the iOS Security Guide confirms that it is relying on Google's public cloud for storage for iCloud Services. Previous versions of the guide had stated that Apple was relying on Amazon Web Services, as well as Microsoft Azure for data storage, however in the newest report the Azure reference is now gone with Google in its place. Anyone want to take bets on when Google gets investigated for being a monopoly? It seems you can't do anything without them.
  • iTunes Store Dropping Windows Vista and XP Support on May 25th  - Apple has stated on a support page post that it will be dropping support for Windows Vista, XP, and the first generation of Apple TV on May 25th. Apple states that on Vista and XP machines, you will still be able to use older versions of iTunes without support, however you will not be able to make any purchases from the store.
  • California enters Right to Repair movement with new proposal - California is the latest state to get on board yesterday when it announced the California Right to Repair Act. The bill is being proposed by Democratic Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman, who believes consumers should have the right to choose where to have their devices repaired. One would think that such a law would not have much chance in California. However, other than Turkey, California is the only place where electronics manufacturers are required to service devices for at least seven years as opposed to five years everywhere else. This is reflected in Apple's own support policies.
  • Thieves Steal 600 Powerful Bitcoin-Mining Computers in Huge Heist - Hundreds of servers designed to mine bitcoin have been stolen in Iceland, and authorities have been unable to track down a single system. The missing hardware includes 600 graphics cards, as well as 100 processors, 100 power supplies, 100 motherboards, and 100 sets of computer memory. Law enforcement is hoping for an energy surge somewhere, as they appear to be out of leads. According to The Associated Press and Visir, those are the items a coordinated group of Icelandic thieves has stolen. And though 11 people have reportedly been arrested and at least two are still in custody, none of the stolen computers have yet been found by police The thefts, which occured between late December and early January, were reportedly captured on surveillance cameras by Advania, the server company hit by two of the three thefts. (The graphics cards, processors and so on were allegedly stolen from a home.) Advania had been offering its customers access to bitcoin-mining rigs, and it sounds like those were the type that were stolen. The Associated Press reports that the stolen computers are worth nearly $2 million.
  • Hardcoded Password Found in Cisco Software - Cisco is constantly releasing security advisories for their products, but the recent advisory has an interesting little tidbit about a hardcoded password. Believe it or not their Prime Collaboration Provisioning software app has a hardcoded password that can be exploited by a local attacker. There is no mitigation for this and Cisco customers are advised to patch the PCP application ASAP. In this day and age I just can't fathom a hardcoded password......you're supposed to be better than that Cisco.
  • T-Mobile Is Building 5G in 30 Markets This Year - T-Mobile today provided more details concerning its forthcoming 5G network. It will be building 5G across 30 cities in the U.S. this year. It will start with New York City in the 600 MHz and mmWave spectrum bands. Other named cities include Dallas, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The company has been fortifying its LTE 4G network with technologies such as carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM, License Assisted Access, and FD-MIMO with 64 antennas (32 transmit, 32 receive). The company is not going to cap its LTE network in any form, continuing to use it for the foreseeable future. All these technologies have helped the company prepare for 5G. T-Mobile says 5G and 4G are going to coexist and live together. T-Mobile reiterated that it will first use its 600 MHz spectrum for 5G, though it is also eyeing the 3.5 GHz mid-band and 28 GHz mmWave spectrum. The FCC expects to auction off 28GHz later this year. T-Mobile didn't specify what mmWave spectrum it will us for its 5G network. T-Mobile sees 5G encompassing fixed broadband (routers), mobile service (phones, AR/VR, wearables, drones), and IoT (sensors, industrial automation). It will cover every inch of the U.S. with some 5G service by 2020 with equipment from Nokia and Ericsson. The company is already deploying 5G NR-capable hardware in its base stations. T-Mobile expects to debut the first 5G smartphones and other products during the first quarter of 2019.

  • Russian TV shows Arma 3 clip as actual footage of Syrian war - Not for the first time, Russia has used footage taken from a video game and used it in a report on real-life military action. In this instance, a clip from Arma 3 briefly appeared in a segment on the war in Syria. State-run Channel One TV's weekly Voskresnoye Vremya program was airing a segment celebrating Russia's armed forces, to commemorate last week's Defender of the Fatherland Day. Roman Filippov, a Su-25 ground attack aircraft pilot killed in Syria earlier this month, was one of those honored. In a sequence showing Su-25 jets in action, one scene contained what appears to be a truck being attacked from the perspective of a sniper. It's on the screen for less than a second, but a closer look reveals the clip is from the 2015 military simulator game, Arma 3

Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9+ Hands-On - tech
(hx) 09:41 PM CET - Feb,25 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
Samsung has announced the Galaxy S9 and S9+ phones, updates to last year's S8 models. The devices bear a striking resemblance to their predecessors and make only modest changes to the hardware. The S9/S9+ feature 2:1 screens with slightly reduced bezels and glass panels front and back. Most significantly, Samsung rotated the camera/fingerprint module so the reader is in a central location on the rear. The phones also adopt stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and produce louder sound than the S8/S8+. The S9/S9+ carry over features such as the waterproof chassis, USB-C port, headphone jack, and dedicated Bixby button. Samsung made significant improvements to the camera. The 12-megapixel cameras now include switchable aperture, from f/1.5 to f/2.4, to help with low-light situations. The camera sensor includes embedded DRAM memory - similar to Sony's premium phones - that allows the S9/S9+ to capture 960fps slow-motion. The slow-mo mode includes a motion detection function so it knows when to slow down the video for maximum effect. Each phone also includes an 8-megapixel selfie camera, along with face and iris scanning for security. Samsung added AR Emoji, a tool that echos the Animoji feature on the iPhone X to a certain degree. Users record their face which is then turned into a cartoon avatar and applied to 18 different personalized GIFs. The AR Emoji also let users animate faces such as a devil, and even apply (and purchase) various types of makeup. Further, S9/S9+ owners can easily save and share the AR Emoji with most other devices. Samsung says the S9/S9+ include a more refined version of Bixby that is now able to recognize more actions. More importantly, Bixby Vision now works in real-time, allowing for instant language translation and searches when viewing items through the camera. The devices ship with Android 8 Oreo, the Samsung SmartThings app, and the latest version of Samsung's DeX software. Samsung's SmartThings will allow the S9/S9+ to interact with other connected Samsung devices, such as refrigerators. The DeX software now works with a new dock that lets the phone act as a virtual mouse and/or keyboard. The S9 includes a 5.8-inch quad HD+ screen and 3,000mAh battery, while the S9+ includes a 6.2-inch quad HD+ screen and 3,500mAh battery. The only other difference in the hardware is found on the rear of the S9+, which features a second camera for 2x telephoto images. Both phones rely on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The phones support microSD cards up to 400 GB. Preorders for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ kick off March 2 and the phones will reach stores March 16. Samsung is offering up to $350 for trade-ins when put toward the purchase of an S9/S9+. The phone will be sold in black, purple, and blue in the U.S. AT&T, Cricket Wireless, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless, and Xfinity Mobile all plan to carry the phone. It will also be available form Best Buy, Amazon, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart. Pricing is about $799 for the S9 and $899 for the S9+.

TechNews - Most Windows 10 PCs running v1709 - tech
(hx) 06:47 PM CET - Feb,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (18)
Microsoft is likely pleased with the updates adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. LOL, it's amazing the things you can accomplish when you FORCE change onto people!! If you have seen Windows.old folders which cannot be deleted without changing ownership/access rights. It's nice if you have workstation with 120GB SSD with few gigabytes free space...FYI, this week, the firm released new updates for PCs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) and the Creators Update (version 1703). If you're on version 1703, you'll see KB4077528, or build 15063.936. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes
  • World of Tanks enCore, Tested on 10 GPUs - Wargaming says it optimized its Core graphics engine for weaker configurations, and it only requires a dual-core CPU. Our results confirm the developer's assertions. Even with two physical cores enabled, the benchmark's frame rate remains excellent. Activating SMT helps improve our observed minimum frame rate, and there are no additional gains available beyond four physical cores.
  • 20 Multiplayer VR Games That Work Across Platforms - Virtual reality games are great fun, but with several platforms on the market, the communities for these games are often fractured and suffer from small installed bases. The best way to avoid a fractured community is to offer a way to bring everyone together. Here's a look at VR games that offer cross-platform gameplay in one form or another.
  • 5-Way Mech Keyboard Roundup - Chris over at Hot Hardware took the time to do a roundup review that covers five difference mechanical keyboards from Corsair, Azio, HyperX, Aukey, and Cherry.
  • Most Windows 10 PCs are now running the Fall Creators Update - Microsoft in October launched the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, delivering a bundle of small and medium-sized improvements to customers utilizing Microsoft’s latest operating system. If data from cross-promotion network AdDuplex is at all accurate, Microsoft is likely pleased with the update’s adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. In some countries like Canada, Germany and Finland, the update has a market share of over 90 percent although others such as China and India bring the global average down with adoption rates in the 60 percent range.
  • How To Disable Wi-Fi Sense In Windows 10 - Wi-Fi Sense is a feature in Windows 10 that saves you from the hassle of manually connecting your device to an open Wi-Fi hotspot and to those managed by your Facebook, Skype, and Outlook contacts. Wi-Fi Sense does this by sharing the secret passkeys that your contacts use to connect to the wireless networks, or by sharing your passkeys with your contacts to allow them to connect to your wireless network. Although Wi-Fi Sense is enabled in Windows 10 by default in an effort to provide a hassle-free experience, using the feature could also be a security concern.
  • Google's ARCore 1.0 Released to Public, Google Lens Hits More - Google today made ARCore 1.0 available to developers and the public, bringing augmented reality to some 100 million smartphones around the world. Handsets compatible with ARCore include Google's Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL; Samsung's Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8, S7, and S7 edge; LGE's V30 and V30+; Asus's Zenfone AR; and OnePlus's OnePlus 5. More devices from Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Asus, Xiaomi, HMD/Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile, and Vivo will be compatible with ARCore later this year
  • Google disclosed Microsoft Edge security flaw before it's fixed - The vulnerability reportedly relates to how Edge handles code execution and was first disclosed to Microsoft by Google back in November. After giving the software giant 90 days to fix the issue, Project Zero researchers have gone public with their findings. Though the specifics of the discovery are complicated and quite technical, the gist is hackers are able to bypass Microsoft Edge's existing security measures to inject malicious code into a victim's PC memory, according to Neowin. With this in mind, it's not hard to see why Project Zero awarded the flaw a "Medium" severity rating. As of writing, Microsoft has not rolled out a fix for the vulnerability so security conscious users may wish to use an alternate browser for the time being.
  • Samsung Halts Galaxy S8 Oreo Update Due to Reboot Bug - Samsung has pulled the Android 8 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 after users reported random reboots. "Following a limited number of cases where Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices have rebooted unexpectedly with the Android 8.0 Oreo, we have temporarily stopped the rollout of the update," said Samsung in a statement provided to SamMobile. "We are investigating the issue internally to ensure that the impact to the affected devices is minimized and the rollout of the update can resume as quickly as possible." Samsung has been rolling out Android 8 slowly over the last few weeks, mostly in European markets. The update had not yet reached the S8 and S8+ in the U.S. Samsung did not say when it expects the make the update available again.
  • Samsung Max Offers Data Savings and Security for Android - Samsung has announced Samsung Max, a free app for Android devices that will provide new data conservation and security tools. The app, a reborn version of the former Opera Max app, includes Data Saving Mode to help people stretch their mobile data buckets a bit further each month. The app can monitor which apps are using data and alert users to apps that consume too much. It also helps by actively compressing images, videos, music files, and web pages within apps and the browser to keep data consumption down. People can fine-tune how Data Saving Mode polices other apps in the advanced settings tools. On the security front, Samsung Max includes Privacy Protection Mode, a VPN for securing phones when on WiFi. It encrypts WiFi traffic with a single tap, blocks trackers and cookies, and includes a Domain Name System masking service to hide the user's location. Samsung says Samsung Max will reach the Google Play Store on February 23. The company will also preinstall it on some devices later this year.
  • New Samsung S9 Video Ad Reveals More Details - Between the three video advertisements, Samsung teases the abilities of the upcoming phone, without ever showing the actual phone. It's obvious that Samsung is trying to hint at the abilities of the camera on the Galaxy S9, as seen with the motif of the round hole in the '9' at the end of each video resembling the view through a round lens. What do you think?
  • Apple Puts Its Foot Down, Will Require Apps Support iPhone X - Apple today told developers that soon all new apps submitted to the iTunes App Store must support the screen of the latest iPhone. "Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK, included in Xcode 9 or later," said Apple in an email to developers. "All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X." The iPhone X display swaps the 16:9 aspect ratio found on the iPhone 6, 7, and 8 for a 2:1 aspect ratio with a notch at the top. It also boosts the resolution beyond full HD. Apps that haven't yet been updated for the iPhone X often have black bars at the top and bottom, which look unsightly. Developers can find the iOS 11 SDK on Apple's developer web site.
  • Apple Prepping Fix for Message Bug that Crashes iPhones  - Apple says it has a patch in the works that will counter a bug causing iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and even Macs to crash. The bug occurs when people receive a message with certain Indian language characters in apps including iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. According to The Verge, Apple will push the patch "soon." This means the bug will be fixed through a minor update (iOS 11.2.x) rather than the larger iOS 11.3 update expected later this spring. Apple also plans to issue patches for macOS and watchOS to resolve the issue on those devices

  • Qualcomm Drops 802.11ax WiFi Modem with WPA3 Security for Phones - Qualcomm today announced the WCN3998, a pre-standard 802.11ax WiFi radio for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 is faster, more power efficient, and more secure than previous designs. To start, the 802.11ax spec allows for more throughput for each user, thanks to 8x8 MU-MIMO, even on congested access points. This ensures that end users see an increase of speeds by a factor of two. Moreover, the WCN3998 puts strict power management algorithms to work in order to reduce power consumption by up to 67%. The WiFi radio is among the first to adopt WPA3 encryption from the WiFi Alliance. WPA3 provides a much greater degree of security on home, public, and enterprise networks, and can even protect those who fail to pick strong passwords. Last, the WCN3998 adopts Bluetooth 5.1 with extended data rate and low energy mode. This makes for more robust wireless audio connections and battery life improvements of up to 75%. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 supports pre-draft access points that it expects to reach the market later this year and early next year. The WiFi radio will find its way into flagship smartphones by the end of 2018.
  • Blu Vivo X Boasts 4 Cameras, 6-Inch 18:9 Display - Blu Products today announced the Vivo X, a flagship handset that costs less than $200. • New Crypto Payment System Available - Even though many vendors (Microsoft, Steam, others) have stopped taking crypto as payment for goods and services this isn't stopping Coinbase from offering a new service that lets vendors take crypto as payment. They call it Coinbase Commerce and they are offering it up to merchants all around the world. Whether or not this brings more merchants back into the fold is anyone's guess, but if it works as easily as Coinbase says it does then I bet some merchants take another look at this. In my opinion, it's just as important to get crypto out there as a purchasing device as it is to be an investment vehicle. Until crypto is used more often it's only going to be a novelty.

Midrange, high-end graphics card prices to rise - tech
(hx) 11:49 PM CET - Feb,23 2018 - Post a comment / read (4)
Things are not looking good for everyone wishing to build a new gaming PC. As we all know, the prices for all modern graphics cards have sky-rocketed over the past few months. And according to NVIDIA, this situation will not be resolved soon as the prices will continue increasing through Q3 2018
NVIDIA was here at Massdrop HQ a couple of weeks ago re-confirming what we already know. There is a couple of reason why there is a shortage and also such a high demand of cards.

First the shortage.
All new cell phones coming out by Apple and Samsung (and others) last year started using the same memory as graphics cards. Apple and Samsung are willing to pay more for this memory to make sure they get it first and all of it that they need. This has created a shortage of memory for the much smaller companies like MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, and EVGA to make graphics cards.

Next the demand
This is obvious as the mining craze thats been going on has created a huge demand in the market as miners are goblin up just about every card available on earth.

These two things combined has just made it a tough time for any system builder out there that just wants a card or two for their rig.

While NVIDIA was here they also let us know that the pricing in the market will continue to go up through Q3 of this year most likely before we start seeing any type of relief. So, unfortunately the end to this is not right around the corner and we have not seen the worst of it yet.

Let me finish by telling everyone on Massdrop this. I will continue to list graphics cards that I can for the community if I am able to offer a competitive price. Also, as I have mentioned in other graphics cards drops we are selling this for right above our cost just barely covering back end expenses.

Why should Massdrop offer these cards above MSRP? Well, there are still customers who want to build computers now and not wait 6, 9, 12 months for the market to stabilize. So as long as I can bring them a better deal than what is currently available I will continue to do so. That being said MSRP is kind of out the window at this point so keep your eye on market price VS Massdrop as you will not see any cards out there anywhere close to MSRP for a while to come.
Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.2.3 drivers - tech
(hx) 10:27 AM CET - Feb,23 2018 - Post a comment
AMD today released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition. Version 18.2.3, the third release for this month, comes with optimization for "Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age," "Sea of Thieves," and "Brass Tactics." With "Sea of Thieves," the drivers enable up to 29% higher frame-rates at 4K UHD, when measured with Radeon RX Vega 64, and up to 39% higher frame-rates at 1080p, when measured with an RX 580. With FFXII, it enables up to 13% higher frame-rates at 1440p measured with an RX Vega 64, and up to 20% higher frame-rates at 1080p, with an RX 580. A host of FreeSync-related bugs are addressed with this release. They correct a bug experienced with FreeSync kicking in during online video-playback in Google Chrome, causing flickering; rapid frame-rate changes between minimum and maximum FPS ranges when gaming in certain system configurations; which causes stuttering; and a flickering observed on FreeSync-capable displays when performance metrics overlay is enabled with Enhanced Sync. A Radeon Overlay flickering noticed on Vulkan API games was fixed. A display corruption issue with "Fortnite" was fixed

  • 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen CPU Showing Boot Issues with Old BIOS -  AMD has issued a support bulletin this morning pertaining to its 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen CPUs. It seems that some older UEFI BIOS are not playing nice with the new CPUs. All in all, this is not all that uncommon when it comes to new CPUs and motherboards that support previous generation processors. If you are unable to get your system to POST or boot with a new Ryzen, the solution is simple and hopefully you will have what you need on hand to make this happen.
  • Ryzen 5 2400G Live Testing! - Due to a retail slip-up, tech YouTuber SonofaTech received his AMD Ryzen 5 2400G early and proceeded with a 10-hour live test to demonstrate the chip's ability to run newer titles in 1080p at appreciable framerates. It did particularly well with games such as Overwatch (1080p, high preset, up to 70 FPS) and Dirt Rally (1080p, medium preset, average 57 FPS).
  • Microsoft is bringing HoloLens to two more markets - Microsoft has published its February update for mixed reality. It's the first in a series of monthly blog posts where the company will discuss what's new for its platforms. Most notably, the firm announced that HoloLens will now be available in two new markets: Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. This brings the total number of markets that the device is available in to 41, after 29 countries were added in December. The other significant development is that HoloLens is now available to rent. Businesses in the United States and Canada can rent one from ABCOMRENTS, so they can evaluate the product and decide whether to purchase it, or just to temporarily increase their inventory. Unfortunately, there's still no news of a second-generation HoloLens. The last we heard of such a device was a year ago, and that report said that the next model will be available in 2019. In the nearly two years since the Development Edition was made available, little has changed. In fact, the device is still running the Anniversary Update, and Microsoft still only sells a Development Edition for the same price of $3,000, and the Commercial Suite for $5,000.

If you don't have the individual apps it will prompt you to download them from the App Store and once they are setup the TV app will allow for single sign-on into any of them. Also, it integrates the Siri ability to start playing a specific network if you like. All in all it's a good capability for Apple fans. While not as extensive as the Sports interface, the News section in the TV app allows users to instantly access live streaming news content from several different networks. You get direct access to CBS News, CNN, Fox News, Cheddar, CNBC, and Bloomberg.
  • Microsoft will finally start letting users resume interrupted Windows updates - We've all been there. When Windows 10 is trying to download and install a big update, it takes a long time, and sometimes you'll have to shut down or reboot your PC before it's finished. Once you boot back up, you'll find an error message in Windows Update with a 'Retry' button, and it's time to start the process over. But according to a report from Windows Central's Andy Weir, that's all about to change. Soon, you'll be able to resume the download/install process, instead of starting from scratch.

  • Chrome 68 Will Mark All HTTP Sites As 'Not Secure' - In the interest of security, Google plans to call out web sites that don't adopt https. Later this year, version 68 of the Chrome web browser will proactively label web sites that don't make use of https encryption. The company has been casually marking such web sites, but will start to call them all out this summer. The goal is to encourage web developers to add https to their web sites, which will improve security for everyone. According to Google, over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows is now protected, while over 78% of Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac is now protected. Fully 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use https by default. Google said it will adjust Chrome's user interface so users understand which sites are insecure and why they are insecure. Google says it has simplified its set-up guides to help web developers secure their sites with https.
  • Half of All Cryptojacking Scripts Are Found on Porn Sites - Data from Qihoo 360's Netlab is being used to confirm the obvious: cryptojacking is rampant on adult sites. To be exact, 50% of all mining scripts live on some kind of porn site. These pages are typically intrusive and ad-ridden, so there is little surprise here, despite time-consuming gaming and video streaming portals being potentially better deployments. Based on the meta keywords each site used to describe its content, porn sites represented the bulk of the detected domains on which researchers found JS-based mining code. Adult sites accounted for 49%, followed by fraud sites (8%), advertising domains (7%), cryptocurrency mining (7%), and film and television streaming sites (6%).
  • Stealthy Data Exfiltration Possible via Magnetic Fields - en Gurion University researchers have developed two pieces of malware that rely on magnetic fields to exfiltrate data from an air-gapped device. One of them is called ODINI and it uses this method to transmit the data to a nearby magnetic sensor. The second piece of malware is named MAGNETO and it sends data to a smartphone, which typically have magnetometers for determining the device's orientation.
  • Hackers Infect Android Phones And Smart TV's to Mine Monero - Hackers have infected thousands of Android phones and smart TVs, turning the devices into Monero miners. Chinese cyber security firm 360Netlab announced that the attack affected more than 7,000 devices in China by taking advantage of an open port 5555. The report says that scan traffic for port 5555 is growing rapidly as the ADB.Miner worm spreads. The researchers told ZDNet the hackers weren't opening the port themselves, which would have been a much more worrying attack. "The 5555 ADB interfaces of those devices have already been opened before [they're] infected," the researchers said. "We have no idea about how and when this port was opened yet."
  • Verizon to Start Locking Its Phones Again to Fight Thieves -  In a statement provided to CNET. "These steps will make our phones exponentially less desirable to criminals."
  • Elon Musk's Satellite Broadband Clears Crucial U.S. Hurdle - Bloomberg is reporting today that Elon Musk's SpaceX application to provide broadband services using satellite technologies was recommended by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today. Last year SpaceX requested authority to deploy and operate a constellation of 4,425 satellites operating 700-800 miles above Earth. The proposal now has to go before Ajit Pai's four fellow commissioners for approval. If approved I have to wonder how ling it will take to deploy 4,425 satellites. While I love the idea of satellite internet, one thing that they still have not overcome is latency, we will see if the team at SpaceX can solve that problem..
