  • The Ryzen V1000 is Perfect for Gaming  - "Gaming Unit" however refers to the V1000 being used in gaming machines, as in slot machines and other casino games, so V1000 is not for us "gamers." but for other gamers. The Advantech DPX-E140 is still pretty cool to see in action and considering it ran run four 4K displays we will likely see tech like this wind up in a lot of places. There is a closeup shot of the board that shows off the four DisplayPort outputs in the video along with six USB and two NICs.
  • SD Cards Add PCIe and NVMe, Hit 985 MB/Sec and 128TB - The new standards both retain the existing SD Card form factor, so will work in anything that can already read one of the cards. Not all devices will get the new speed, because adding NVMe and PCIe (versions 1.3 and 3.0 respectively) uses the second set of pins already present on ultra-high speed SD cards and not everything is built to hit those pins.
  • WPA3, Next-Generation Security for WiFi, Is Here - The WiFi Alliance today launched WiFi Certified WPA3, its fully updated security protocol for WiFi. The Alliance first announced WPA3 in January. Today marks the updated standard's introduction to real-world products. There are two branches of WPA3, WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise each with its own distinct mode of operation. One core feature of WPA3 is stronger protection even when users choose weak passwords. WPA3 simplifies the process of securing access points that don't have a display or interface. The WiFi Alliance calls this WiFi Certified Easy Connect. The standard provides individualized data encryption to protect data as it moves from computers, tablets, and phones to access points. WPA3 also includes a 192-bit security suite to help businesses and governments adopt the highest levels of protection. The WiFi Alliance says WPA2 devices will continue to operate as before and can interact with devices that have adopted the new standard. It's not clear just when Certified WPA3 devices will land on store shelves.

  • Micro-LED Display Boasts of 1 Million Nits Capability - Jay Bird Display (JBD) has unveiled their new Micro-LED technology that boasts of 5000ppi, and 1 million nits capability on a 2560x1920 device. The CEO suggested uses included integration into sniper scopes where the display would take over the duties of a spotter, lithography, 3D printing, projectors, head up display (HUD) and Augmented Reality (AR). The chips have already been manufactured on a wafer, but the yields need to be increased to meet the $10 - $20 per chip estimated price.
  • KaiOS Wins $22 Million Investment from Google - KaiOS says Google has agreed to invest $22 million in its light-weight mobile operating system. The investment from Google follows commitments made earlier this year by Google, Facebook, and Twitter to support the platform. "This funding will help us fast-track development and global deployment of KaiOS-enabled smart feature phones, allowing us to connect the vast population that still cannot access the internet, especially in emerging markets," said Sebastien Codeville, CEO of KaiOS Technologies. KaiOS is already available on a number of low-cost phones, including Nokia's 8110 5G "banana" phone and the Doro Phone 7050. KaiOS says it is working with other manufacturers, including TCL, HMD Global, and Micromax, and that it has partnerships with carriers including AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Beyond the investment, Google plans to bring Google Assistant, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search to KaiOS. Google said it is "excited to work with KaiOS to further improve access to information for feature phone users around the world."
  • Samsung announces Galaxy Note 9 event for August 9th - The Verge - The August 9th date was rumored by Bloomberg earlier in the month, and the Note 9 itself recently cleared the FCC, so a launch event was likely to happen sooner or later. As for the Note 9, rumors indicate that it'll be a similar upgrade to the Note 8 as the Galaxy S9 was to last year's S8, with a focus on an improved camera rather than a completely overhauled design. The invitation also seems to hint at a new yellow color for the device. Given that Samsung also tends to use the Note line as a platform for bigger hardware experiments, though, it's likely we could see some other additions - like, say, the long-rumored in-display fingerprint scanner. Whatever the case, we'll find out in just a few weeks when Samsung's event rolls around (or, if past history is any indication, when the leaks start to come out).

AMD Dominates the Battlefield V Closed Alpha - tech
(hx) 11:58 PM CEST - Jul,03 2018 - Post a comment / read (5)
Despite Battlefield V being a full blooded GeForce game, the crew at PCGamesN is reporting that AMD is handily winning the battle for performance so far. They pitted the GTX 1060 up against the RX 580 8GB at both 1080p and 1440p, and the results were surprising, with the RX 580 being around 33% faster.
With the GTX 1060 the DX 12 performance is 9% down compared with the card running under the DX 11 API with the exact same system settings. That’s not a huge amount, but is still a problem given that there is practically zero difference between DX 12 and DX 11 performance when you throw an RX 580 into the mix.

Still, at least the GTX 1080 Ti is still nailing gaming performance - it was delivering a pleasing 114fps at 1080p Ultra settings. Though it too was struggling with DX 12, losing around 14fps on average compared with the DX 11 performance.

Some bugs in Win 10 (1803) fixed, others persist - tech
(hx) 11:23 PM CEST - Jul,01 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
Computerworld continues their critical analysis of Windows 10: while Microsoft released a patch this week (KB 4284848) fixing two major bugs related to the SMBv1 protocol and Edge browser, they advise that Windows 10 1803 is still riddled with old problems. These include Intel NIC and VLAN issues, Chrome conflicts, and lack of home network connectivity.

Microsoft may think that Win10 (1803) is ready for widespread deployment, but there are a few folks who would take issue with that stance.

Yesterday, Microsoft finally released a fix for two big bugs that have dogged Win10 1803 since its inception. In theory, patch KB 4284848 fixes these acknowledged bugs:

  • Some users running Windows 10 version 1803 may receive the error "An invalid argument was supplied" when accessing files or running programs from a shared folder using the SMBv1 protocol.
  • Microsoft Edge may stop working when it initializes the download of a font from a malformed (not RFC compliant) URL.

In practice, life isn’t so simple. WSUS (the Windows Update Server software) isn’t “seeing” KB 4284848, as of late Wednesday afternoon –  which may be a good thing.

Old problems remain in abundance. There are many reports of munged Intel NICs and VLAN problems after installing 1803. Josh Mayfield (whom you may recall from GWX days) reports that you’re forced to set up a PIN during fresh installs. The ancient problem with restore partitions getting assigned drive letters on install remains. Chrome continues its indigestion with 1803, although Microsoft claims the latest patch cures all ills. None of this is acknowledged anywhere I can see.

One problem that has been acknowledged – but only by a Microsoft Agent on an Answers Forum post – says that installing 1803 can clobber your peer-to-peer network. That certainly matches my experience. With earlier versions of Win10, I’d fire up the Homegroup Troubleshooter and that usually solved the problem. Unfortunately, Microsoft discontinued Homegroups in version 1803.

Razer has released a pair of new keyboards that feature their new "opto-mechanical" switches. The switches are available in the new "Razer Huntsman Elite" and "Razer Huntsman" keyboards. The switches use an infrared beam of light, that is broken when the key is depressed, and allows light to pass when the key is pressed. In addition they also have a mechanical component, giving them a similar "clicky" feel to the Razer Green switch.

Microsoft Re-Releases The IntelliMouse - tech
(hx) 01:45 PM CEST - Jun,28 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
In an announcement today on the Windows Blog, Microsoft is bringing back the Classic IntelliMouse. Originally launched in 1996, this new version is based upon the 2003 IntelliMouse, which was the last model in the lineup. To go along with the announcement, Microsoft has released a fantastic Rube Goldberg machine video unveiling the mouse.
We improved two really important factors, the tracking sensor and the tactility and feel of the buttons. What we know our fans will see and feel is that it’s the exact same shape and size of the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 from 2003. However, underneath the hood it’s all brand-new technology, brand new mechanical engineering and brand-new structures so it’s a lot more rigid than the original. The build quality is really excellent.

We were really careful to keep the same Omron switches for the left and right click, and have added three Kailh switches for the middle wheel button and side buttons. We also made a huge improvement to the two side buttons. They now feel snappy and crisp and have just the right force and click to them

  • AMD trolls Intel with offer to trade in Core i7 CPU for Threadripper - Intel at Computex 2018 officially announced the Core i7-8086K, a limited edition processor (only 50,000 examples are being made) to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original 8086 processor released on June 8, 1978. As part of the festivities, Intel announced a sweepstakes in which it would give away 8,086 CPUs during a 24-hour span. The entry date - June 7 at 5:00 p.m. PST through June 8 at 5:00 p.m. PST - came and went without much fanfare - that is, until rival chipmaker AMD got involved. AMD on Monday announced a promotion of its own to celebrate the "next 40 years of high-performance computing." The first 40 US-based winners of Intel's competition can opt to trade in their shiny new Core i7-8086K for a Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, AMD's flagship 16-core / 32-thread processor.

Android Messages on the web is rolling out today, with the rest of the features reaching the mobile app over the weeks ahead.
  • iOS 12 to Give 911 Precise iPhone Location During Emergencies - Apple has said iPhones will soon provide 911 emergency services with more exact locations of callers. Since 2015, Apple has relied on HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location), which uses cellular, GPS, and wifi access points to estimate 911 callers' locations. This system is not always perfect. Starting with the release of iOS 12 in the fall, Apple will use RapidSOS's internet protocol-based pipeline to share HELO location data with 911 centers quickly and securely. Apple says this new system will integrate with 911 centers' existing software to more finely pinpoint location. Importantly, Apple says user location data cannot be used for non-emergency purposes and 911 centers will only have access to location during 911 emergency calls. By law, wireless network operators are required to locate callers within 50 meters 80% of the time, but not until 2021. Apple says its new feature exceeds this requirement today. "This new functionality is an example of how companies and first responders can use technology to dramatically improve public safety," said Tom Wheeler, former chairman at the FCC. "Lives will be saved thanks to this effort by Apple and RapidSOS." iOS 12 is expected to reach iPhones and iPads in September or October.

  • Intel Readying 22-core LGA2066 and 8-core LGA1151 Processors - Intel is readying a refresh to its "Basin Falls" HEDT platform (LGA2066 client high-end desktop), with a new 22-core silicon. This part is neither Skylake HCC (20 tiles, up to 18 cores) nor Skylake XCC (30 tiles, up to 28 cores), but a new die with four more tiles than the Skylake HCC silicon, all of which are cores. The new silicon could let Intel design 20-core and 22-core SKUs for the X299 Express chipset, and is seen as a direct response to AMD's 24-core Ryzen Threadripper II processor, which was recently shown beating the 18-core i9-7980X in tech demos. The 32-core Threadripper II could face competition from the 28-core HEDT processor Intel is readying for Q4-2018, but that processor won't be compatible with LGA2066.
  • Intel CPUs have another bug that can leak sensitive information - Security researchers have discovered a vulnerability affecting all modern Intel Core and Xeon processors, which is an exploit of a performance optimization feature called "lazy FP state restore," which can be exploited to sniff out sensitive information, including cryptographic keys used to protect sensitive data. The flaw affects all x86 micro-architectures by Intel, "Sandy Bridge" and later. The "lazy FP state restore" feature is a set of commands used to temporarily store or restore the FPU states of applications running "lazily" (as opposed to "eagerly"). Red Hat put out an advisory stating that numbers held in FPU registers could be used to access sensitive information about the activities of other applications, including encryption keys. Intel began working with popular OS vendors to quickly roll out software patches against the vulnerability.
  • Intel Teases 28-Hour Laptop Battery Life Using One-Watt Display - At the conference, Intel said they were working on a new Low Power Display Technology that combined more efficient energy use with lower power consumption to increase the battery life of a 13-inch display. For some devices, that could lead to a battery that lasts longer than a full day. "The display consumes the most battery in a device, and one way we're working to enable all-day battery life is by co-engineering the new Intel Low Power Display Technology, featured in a one watt panel manufactured by Sharp and Innolux, which can cut LCD power consumption by half," Gregory Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel, said in a press release. "Through continued innovation with the industry, we expect to deliver an additional four to eight hours of local video playback - that means battery life could be up to 28 hours on some devices."  In a presentation at the conference, Intel played a time-lapse video showing the laptop operating for 25 hours. Bryant also added that changes in hardware and new Intel GPU software allow for the lower battery power use. According to the release, lighting up the screen is the most energy-consuming task laptops perform, and their system takes measures to address this while keeping screen brightness relatively high. With the help of Sharp and Innolux, their new screens use half of the energy they used to.

  • Synology Releases Active Backup for Office 365 and Business - Synology today released two major backup applications in Active Backup suite of packages, the official version of Active Backup for Office 365 that supports SaaS cloud backup, and the beta version of Active Backup for Business that provides data availability for workloads in physical and virtual environments.
  • Microsoft HoloLens 2 Tipped For Q1 2019 Launch - The rumor claims that the new HoloLens is going to arrive in Q1 2019. This is interesting in part because Microsoft reportedly stopped developing the V2 of the HoloLens and was instead moving directly to a more groundbreaking "V3" device. It was said at the time that the new HoloLens would by an augmented reality device. Thurrott reports that it has seen documents that claim the new headset will be lighter, more comfortable, and have improved holographic displays. The big win for Microsoft and anyone who has been on the fence about getting the current HoloLens is that the new version is tipped to cost significantly less than the current version.
  • Google Brings Offline Neural Machine Translations to Mobile - Google today made its neural machine translation (NMT) technology available to Google Translate even when mobile devices are offline. Google says NMT will run on Android and iOS phones in Google Translate, powering accurate translations when there's no internet connection. NMT translates text entire sentences at once, rather than word by word or phrase by phrase. This means translations sound more like they would if spoken by a real person. This is particularly helpful with longer sections of text, such as paragraphs or articles. Users will need to download the specific language pack they want/need to their device in order to access offline NMT. Most languages are between 35 MB and 45 MB, so they don't take up too much space. Google Translate is adding offline NMT support for 59 languages around the world over the next few days, with more in the works.

  • Google Releases Android P Beta 2 with Final APIs -Google today made Android P Beta 2 available to developers. Importantly, Google says this beta includes the final Android P APIs (level 28) and the official SDK, which means developers have what they need to customize their apps for the new features in Android P. Google says those who've already enrolled in the beta program will automatically get Android P Beta 2 over the next day or so. Android P includes features such as Adaptive Battery for smarter power consumption; App Actions, which rely on machine learning so apps are more engaging with users; Slices, which surface rich content in places like Google Search and Assistant; and new controls for notch-style displays. The beta so packs 157 new emoji. In addition to Google's own Pixel and Nexus phones, several other devices from OnePlus, Sony, and others will have access to the Android P Beta 2. Google expects to roll out the final version of Android P later this summer.
  • "Glitch" Allows A Google Search Request to Show Your Text Messages - In a report from PhoneArena, a Reddit user noticed that when he accidentally typed an extra period into a google search for "the1975..com" instead of a search result, he received a page showing his text messages. The same page that appears if you asked Google to "show me my text messages." Another user noted that searching for "zela viagens" will trigger the same result. Interesting find. Of course what this also means is Google is likely spying on your text messages as well. Fortunately PhoneArena notes in the article, that if you remove SMS permissions from the Google app, the Google can no longer spy on your texts.
  • VPNFilter Router Malware is a Lot Worse Than Everyone Thought - A couple of weeks ago I reported about a Russian malware (VPNFilter) that was infecting a large number or routers from different vendors. This week I have bad news to report because this malware is far more widespread than originally thought. More vendors have been added to the vulnerable list and additional models from already named vendors have been added as well. Take a look at the source and you'll be able to see if your router is vulnerable. The researchers believe the criminals controlling VPNFilter are profiling endpoints to pick out the best targets, and will swipe confidential information in transit where possible. The code snoops on the destination IP address, to help it identify valuable traffic such as a connection to a bank, as well as visited domain names. It also attempts to downgrade secure HTTPS connections to unencrypted forms, so that login passwords and the like can be obtained.
  • Apple Will Lock iPhone Lightning Port to Protect Users from Law - Apple today said it will change the behavior of iPhones in order to protect its users. The company plans to alter its software to lock the Lightning port of iOS devices that are not used for an hour. The function, called USB Restricted Mode, prevents data transfer via USB, though the phone can still charge through a Lightning cable. The idea is to thwart law enforcement use of GrayShift and Cellebrite boxes, which are able to crack iOS security using a direct USB connection through the Lightning port. The devices work by disabling the number of times passwords/PINs can be guessed by the machine before the iPhone is locked or erased. "We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data," said Apple in a statement to Reuters. "We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs." The Lightning port will be re-enabled for data transfer once the owner enters their password, PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID. Apple primarily expects the feature to protect consumers "in countries where police seize phones at will." Researchers discovered USB Restricted Mode in beta builds of iOS 10.4 last month. Apple told Reuters that it will be added permanently to iOS in a future release.
  • Apple Says Apps Can't Be Used to Mine Cryptocurrency - Apple doesn't want iPhones and iPads to be used by developers to mine Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. The company recently updated its App Store guidelines with specific bans on mining. "Apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device" such as in the cloud, said Apple. Some apps have hidden cryptocurrency mining in their background processes, using mobile and other devices to mine the currencies unbeknownst to device owners. This is now forbidden. Apple is still allowing apps to facilitate transactions or transmissions of cryptocurrency on an approved exchange, as well as facilitate Initial Coin Offerings as long as they come from established banks. Google has put a similar cryptocurrency mining ban in place in its Chrome Web Store.
  • Snapchat's 'Clear Chats' Tool Lets You Unsend Messages - Snapchat is rolling out a new feature over the next few weeks that will allow people to unsend messages. The tool, called Clear Chats, lets users retract messages. Users wishing to delete a note will need to do so directly from the thread by pressing and holding the message they want to get rid of. The operation is not perfect. Snapchat says it will do what it can to retract messages, but it may not be able to if the recipient isn't connected to the internet or doesn't have the most recent version of the app installed. The recipient will be notified that they received a message and that it was retracted. The tool still doesn't protect against screen shots. Snapchat says it should reach all users globally soon.
  • Samsung Rounds Out Entry-Level Roster with Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J3 - Samsung has announced the Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J3, simple phones that offer basic functionality at affordable price points. Shared features include Android 8 Oreo, 2 GB of memory, 16 GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.2, and WiFi. The international configuration of these phones ship with Samsung Exynos processors on board, but U.S. versions will likely swap for Qualcomm processors.
  • Xiaomi Mi 8 in-depth Review - Xiaomi's Mi 8 is the Chinese phone company's flagship for 2018 and like every other handset's flagship it too will feature an edge-to-edge display broken only by a "notch" on its upper edge. But that's not the only similarity the Mi 8 bears to the iPhone X. It has a pair of cameras on its rear that are arranged vertically (both are 12 megapixel), and the front of the Explorer Edition of the phone features a 20MP camera equipped with infrared face unlocking technology (which sounds a lot like Apple's Face ID to us). Elsewhere, the phone is every bit the flagship Android device we'd expect in 2018. It's got Qualcomm's top of the line Snapdragon 845 chip, and a 6.21-inch AMOLED display. In terms of software, the phone will run Xiaomi's MIUI 10 skin on top of Android (which we've got our fingers crossed is version Oreo, but Xiaomi wasn't able to officially confirm this) and Xiaomi is also packing in its own Xiao Ai voice assistant.
  • Tesla Updates Autopilot Nag - Whiners Start Whining - Given all the bad press that Tesla has gotten lately from people using its not-so-aptly-named "Autopilot," and running into things, it is making some changes to the "Nag" system, as its users call it. Previously, the nag would only nag you every 5 minutes if under 45mph on a straight road, and 1 to 3 minutes over 45mph. With new updates being pushed out, you will be alerted every 15 to 20 seconds to keep you hands on the steering wheel, since of course "Autopilot" does not automatically pilot your car. Oh the horror of having the drive your car. Maybe if you don't want to drive, you should take an Uber? That said, all you have to do is actually touch the steering wheel, so don't worry, you still don't have to actually drive.

Steam will stop working on WinXP/Vista - tech
(hx) 03:14 PM CEST - Jun,13 2018 - Post a comment / read (11)
Valve's Steam software has been around for almost 15 years and has arguably come a long way from its somewhat humble beginnings. In fact, the company just announced a complete overhaul to its built-in chat client, now available via the beta channel, foreshadowing some marked improvements over the fundamentals currently offered. Now, there's another big change set for Steam on the horizon, impacting users of older versions of Windows.
Starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. This means that after that date the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.
The primary reason cited for the cessation of Windows XP and Vista support was attributed to the "embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows". In addition, future versions of the Steam client will need access to security updates and features that only exist in Windows 7 and later editions of the operating system. If your gaming rig is still running Windows XP or Vista then you've still got the best part of six months before the client will stop working on your system. While you will still be able to launch games from your library in the interim, new enhancements such as the upgraded Steam Chat experience, will not be made available.

Nvidia releases fix for DisplayPort issues - tech
(hx) 09:13 AM CEST - Jun,09 2018 - Post a comment
A number of users of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 900 series and GeForce 10-series have experienced problems using newer monitors connected via DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4. Problems have ranged from blank screens to the inability to properly boot up at all. Unfortunately, regular driver updates cannot fix the problems that many users have experienced. That said, the fix is now available to flash the BIOS of affected graphics cards. Nvidia's tool first unloads the existing driver from your system and then proceeds to flash the BIOS of your GPU. Do not interrupt the process during this time since a failed flash attempt could lead to serious problems. This firmware update tool should only be run if you are experiencing any problems running a Maxwell or Pascal-based graphics card with a DisplayPort output. Following the flashing of firmware, a restart is recommended.

To be able to run the tool if you are unable to boot with DisplayPort, you must use a DVI, HDMI, or VGA cable instead or use a different monitor all together. Nvidia also recommends changing boot modes from UEFI to Legacy or from Legacy to UEFI. Forcing use of integrated graphics is also an acceptable solution in order to run Nvidia's update tool.

Intel's 28-Core 5 GHz CPU: Coming in Q4 - tech
(hx) 04:57 PM CEST - Jun,05 2018 - Post a comment
At their Computex Press Conference Intel made a surprise announcement, revealing their plans to release a 28-core consumer CPU before the end of the year. The sheer number of processing threads on this unit isn't the only thing that is impressive; Intel demoed their chip running at 5GHz on all cores, clock speeds that are not available on any consumer-grade Intel processor without overclocking. Given the all-core 5GHz nature of this test, it is unlikely that any consumer-grade version of this chip will offer an all core boost this high, it is more likely that Intel overclocked their engineering sample for the wow factor. In their demo, Intel's 28-core offered a Cinebench R15 score of 7,334, a result that is higher than anything that we have ever tested, showcasing Intel's desire to hold onto the CPU performance crown.

No other details were provided, however for it to exist in a current platform, this new processor would likely be in LGA2066 (X299) or LGA3647 (the server socket). Intel technically already makes 28-core monolithic designs in the Intel Xeon Scalable Platform with the Xeon Platinum 8180, which is a $10k processor, which runs a lot slower than 5.0 GHz.

GeForce Game Ready 397.93 WHQL drivers - tech
(hx) 05:55 PM CEST - May,24 2018 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released GeForce 397.93 WHQL "Game Ready" drivers. The drivers come with optimization for "The Crew" closed beta and "State of Decay 2." SLI profiles are either added or updated for "DRG Initiative," and "Star Wars: Battlefront II." The drivers also introduce CUDA 9.2 support. In addition, the drivers also address a number of bugs. You now no longer need to close Steam to enable/disable SLI. A "Wolfenstein II: TNC" bug that causes the game to freeze in the Roosevelt area, is fixed. A critical issue is fixed on machines with both "Pascal" and "Kepler" GPUs installed, in which the driver fails to load. Green flickering noticed in "Far Cry 5" when using HDR on non-native screen-resolution, is fixed.

  • Google Accused Of Faking Duplex AI Speech Demo - It's safe to say that the most impressive thing shown off at Google I/O this year was the awesome demo of Google Duplex and the Google Assistant interacting with humans to book hair appointments and dinner reservations. Despite the potential of such a mind-blowing demo, some complained that the AI hadn't identified itself and that it was unethical to have humans in the dark about the computer on the other end of the phone. It's safe to say that the most impressive thing shown off at Google I/O this year was the awesome demo of Google Duplex and the Google Assistant interacting with humans to book hair appointments and dinner reservations. Despite the potential of such a mind-blowing demo, some complained that the AI hadn't identified itself and that it was unethical to have humans in the dark about the computer on the other end of the phone. What some are finding incredibly suspicious about the interactions is that the people who answer the calls never identify the business that is being called. Typically when you call a business the person answering the phone will say the business name and their own name; nothing of that sort was said by the people answering these calls. When the hair salon demo call was answered, the woman simply says "Hello, how can I help you?" and when the restaurant call is answered the woman says "Hi, may I help you?" Another thing that detractors are citing is that the calls have no ambient noise in the recordings as you would typically expect in a busy hair salon or restaurant. In addition, neither business in the demos asked for the customer's phone number or contact information. Google has declined to comment
  • Google Home Now Lets You Control Play Movies Via Voice -As promised, Google has added voice control support to its own video service, Google Play Movies & TV, to Google Home. People who own Google Home products can now speak voice commands to access movies and television shows purchased or rented through the Google Play Store and have that content play on Chromecast-connected television sets. Google says people won't have to change any settings or reconfigure their device to access this feature, as it has been added automatically on the backend. Google Home has for some time allowed people to use voice commands to access Netflix and other third-party streaming video content. The tool lets people start movies and shows, fast-forward, rewind, pause, and more.
  • Google Wifi Lets You Check Network Connections for Each Device - Google is rolling out a new tool to its wifi product that will let people gain more insight with respect to the performance of their home network. The Google Wifi Network Check function lets people measure how each individual device is performing on their wifi network. "Knowing wifi coverage is poor in an area of your home can help you pinpoint the exact bottleneck when you notice a connectivity slowdown. Then, you'll know to move your Google Wifi point closer to that device or even move the device itself for a stronger connection," explained Google. Google says most users of Google Wifi have an average of 18 devices connected. The new tool means people can explore how each is connecting to the network and then make adjustments to improve performance as needed. The new feature in Network Check will be available in the Google Wifi app in the next few weeks.
  • Qualcomm to Add WPA3 to Mobile Devices This Summer - Qualcomm this week laid out its plan to adopt the latest wifi security protocol in future products. The company said it will apply the Wifi Alliance's Wifi Protected Access (WPA3) across its portfolio of mobile and networking products starting this summer. The core feature of WPA3 is stronger protection when users choose weak passwords. WPA3 also simplifies the process of securing access points that don't have a display or interface. The standard provides individualized data encryption to protect data as it moves from computers, tablets, and phones to access points. Further, it includes a 192-bit security suite to help businesses and governments adopt the highest levels of protection. Qualcomm says it has already added WPA3 to its WCN3998 wifi radio and IPQ807x AP platform. The company says phons based on the Snapdragon 845 mobile application processor will be the first to support WPA3. The chip and phones that rely on it will gain WPA3 this summer, with Qualcomm's portfolio of networking devices to follow soon thereafter.

The AMOLED display measures 6.28 inches across the diagonal with 2,280 by 1,080 pixels at a 19:9 aspect ratio
  • Mozilla to Display Ads in Firefox - In a move laced with irony, Mozilla would soon be putting paid advertisements into its popular browser Firefox. These advertisements would come in the form of sponsored links shown when one opens a new browser tab.
  • Senate Vote Passes to Save Net Neutrality - Democrats in the Senate forced a vote on net neutrality today and walked away victorious. Members of the Senate voted 52-47 to retain the net neutrality regulations put in place by the Obama administration that were later nixed by the FCC. The margin of victory was large than expected, with three Republicans, two independents, and 47 Democrats all voting in favor of keeping the rules. Though the bill has passed the Senate, it still has to get through the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and, if it succeeds there, President Trump. Obama's FCC established firm rules governing broadband service as a utility under Title II. As such, paid prioritization, fast lanes, blocking, and throttling were strictly prohibited. The Republican-led FCC has largely scaled back those rules, preferring to let the industry govern itself with "light regulation" from the FTC rather than the FCC. For the moment, the FCC's repeal of net neutrality will go into effect on June 11.

NVIDIA GTX1180 reportedly coming out in July - tech
(hx) 05:17 PM CEST - May,17 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
Another day, another GTX 1180 report. This time it’s related to the next generation card’s release date. According to Tom’s Hardware, Nvidia is set to launch the Founders Edition of the upcoming GPU in July, which matches previous rumors. That means we don't have long to wait before getting our hands on it. The news comes from industry sources who spoke with Tom's Hardware Germany's Igor Wallossek on condition of anonymity. In addition to the FE cards’ arrival in a couple of months, they revealed that third-party cards would follow in August or September. There had also been confusion over whether the new cards would use Volta, Ampere, or Turing architecture, but it seems the chips will be based on the Turing platform. There are still no official details, but rumors say the 1180 will use TSMC’s 12nm FinFET process and have 3584 CUDA cores, 224 texture mapping units, and 64 ROPs. It’s also said to sport "8-16GB" of DDR6 memory and features a TDP of 170 to 200 watts. The GTX 1170, meanwhile, is rumored to come with 2,688 CUDA cores, run at 1.5GHz to 1.8GHz, and also have 8 to 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

(hx) 12:42 AM CEST - May,15 2018 - Post a comment / read (8)
During the Google I/0 conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the new Google Assistant and gave a live demonstration of one of the features – The Google Duplex. The Duplex is a highly interactive chatbot able to engage in specific conversations when attending to user assigned tasks such as scheduling an appointment or making dinner reservations and is highly attuned to respond to such nuances as a time ranges, time conflicts and/or interruptions. As presented in the demonstration, the Duplex scheduled a woman''s haircut by phone in a friendly, conversational manner that was incredibly human-like. Next step: AI does not only make the appointment with the salon, but also receives the haircut! :-) Oh well, what do you think about this technology? Cons/Pros please...

  • Windows 10 Your Phone Feature Will Mirror Any Smartphone On Your PC - Microsoft had a trick up its sleeves at the Microsoft Build conference last week, one that integrates Windows 10 with your smartphone. The app is called "Your Phone" and it is a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app that will be pushed for Windows Insiders in the coming weeks. No exact ETA is known at this time. What it does is allow users to access text messages, photos, and notifications on any Windows 10 PC from your phone. Microsoft has also suggested that it will allow users to drag and drop photos from the phone to the PC without having to touch the smartphone. The demo shown off at Build used an Android smartphone and showed that you can drag a photo from your desktop into a text message on your Android device. The lack of an iOS demo has left some thinking that perhaps the same experience won't be offered on Apple devices. This is due to how vigorously Apple locks down iOS devices. Word is that Microsoft might propose an idea of sharing messages with the iPhone and PC, whether Apple will bite remains to be seen.
  • A Quick History Of The Keyboard - Keyboards are ubiquitous devices that most of us use every day without thinking twice about it. Who invented the first keyboard, and why are they designed the way they are?
  • Critical flaw found in email encryption tools - Sebastian Schinzel, a professor of Computer Security at the Munster University of Applied Sciences, this week issued a dire warning about a critical flaw in the S/MIME and OpenPGP encryption tools, which would allow attackers to read supposedly encrypted emails in plaintext form. Schinzel and his team's research has been corroborated by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and has been described in detail by the researchers in a paper published earlier today. The flaw, named EFAIL, reportedly affects both sent and received messages, including past correspondence. According to Schinzel, no fixes currently exist for the vulnerability, and the best thing users can do for now is to disable the relevant encryption standards.
  • USB Stick That Can BSOD Any Windows 10 Device Even If Locked - Back in July 2017, Bitdefender researcher Marius Tivadar discovered an exploit in Windows operating systems that allows anyone with physical access to a computer to invoke a BSOD by simply inserting a USB thumb drive loaded with a bit of software. He reported the issue to Microsoft, but at the time they brushed him off. Now, he's stepping out with details and a demonstration to raise awareness of this vulnerability.
  • You Better Reset Your Twitter Password - Just a couple of days ago we posted news of GitHub leaving some of passwords in plain text within the internal logging system. Guess what? It has happened again and Twitter is the culprit. According to a blog post explaining things they say that a bug left passwords in plain text within the logging system before the passwords were hashed. Supposedly there hasn't been any sign of malicious use of these passwords, however, they recommend you change your password just in case.
  • Facebook Says It has Suspended 200 Apps After Audit - Facebook today provided an update on its internal audit with respect to apps' access to user data. Specifically, the company is examining which apps had access to large amounts of user data, similar to Cambridge Analytica, and if those apps misused that data. So far, Facebook has identified some 200 apps that it plans to investigate further. "Where we find evidence that these or other apps did misuse data, we will ban them and notify people," said the social network. As it preps its in-depth infestation into these apps, it has suspended their access to Facebook and its data. Facebook says it has already looked at thousands of applications. It will provide more information about what it finds as it continues its investigation. Before 2015, when it changed its data access policies, an app gained access to the data of millions of Facebook users and shared that data with a U.K.-based analyst firm. The data was used to to create voter profiles of Americans ahead of the 2016 election.
  • Google Revamps Storage Options Under 'Google One' Name - Google today relaunched its online, cloud-based storage service as Google One. Along with the new name, Google One includes new storage tiers and pricing. Moving forward, all Google account holders continue to receive 15 GB of storage for free. Those who need more can opt for the 100 GB plan for $1.99 per month, 200 GB for $2.99, 2 TB for $9.99, 10 TB for $99.99, 20 TB for $199.99, or 30 TB for $299.99 per month. Google is allowing users to share storage allotments with up to five family members. Moreover, Google One will provide people with 24/7 access to Google Experts for help with Google's consumer-level products and services. Google says existing paid Google Drive subscribers will be upgraded to Google One automatically over the next few months. Everyone else will be able to access the new Google One later this year.

  • Google's ARCore to Let Multiple People See the Same AR Content - Google has announced an update to its ARCore platform for augmented reality. The platform gains a handful of new tools to help developers create more immersive and shared AR experiences. First and foremost, ARCore introduces something Google calls Cloud Anchors. With Cloud Anchors, multiple devices can generate a shared, synchronized image of the world. It allows multiple phones to see and interact with the same content in the same place at the same time. It's a way to enable multi-player games, for example, or group room decorating. Sceneform is another new tool that makes it easier for developers to make AR experiences from Java-based applications. Sceneform has an expressive API, renderer, and seamless support for 3D objects. Last, Augmented Images makes it possible to attach augmented reality content to objects in the real world and expand them to view 3D renderings, such as opening a box. This is made possible in pat thanks to new support for vertical plane detection. The new ARCore will be made available to both Android and iOS devices. Developers can grab the new ARCore developer tools from the Android Developer web site.

Now, people can use Google Pay to make online purchases whether they're browsing on their desktop or their mobile device. Google Pay is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on PCs and iPhones/iPads. This means Apple device users can put Google Pay to work from their phone or tablet. Google Pay supports multiple payment sources, including debit/credit cards and bank accounts. Google says it can automatically update cards as they are about to expire, and will offer to fill in shipping and/or billing information via Chrome's autofill tool when warranted. Google Pay is free to use on the web. The app for Android devices is free to download from the Google Play Store.
  • Desktop Chrome Now Sports Autoplay Muting - There's nothing worse than crappy autoplay videos on websites and I'm constantly having to mute them so I can read content and not listen to them. However, from this point forward Chrome is going to do something about this and it will learn your browsing behavior and start muting this stuff for you. According to Google, it will mute autoplay stuff for about 1,000 sites within six seconds. Also, they claim that once your browser is fully trained it should block about half of the autoplays you run across. This isn't perfect, but I'm sure over time they will increase the percentage of mutes. With that said, I'm glad I'm a Chrome user and this feature makes me like it even more.
  • ChromeOS Gains Support for Linux - Pixelbook owners will soon be able to use Linux on their ChromeOS device. Google today announced that Chromebooks will be able to run Linux apps, which will let developers open a window and use their favorite Linux-based tools without leaving ChromeOS. Linux will run in a virtual machine environment made just for Chromebooks. It launches instantly and integrates directly with apps on the host device. Google says developers will be able to drag Linux windows around the desktop, open files from downloads, and even deploy Android code from the Linux window to their ChromeOS machine. Google expects to offer Linux in ChromeOS as a preview in the next few weeks. It will offer compatibility with more devices over time. "We were looking at ways to expand support for power users and developers, especially on devices like the Pixelbook," remarked Kan Liu, director of product management, Chrome OS. "Users told us they want the ability to run Linux apps and developer apps, whether it's Android Studio or Visual Studio Code, on ChromeOS." Linux will hit the developer channel soon. It is based on the Debian 4.4 kernel and supports any and all Linux apps.
  • iPhone X Gains HDR Playback in YouTube - YouTube has rolled out support for HDR video playback on the Apple iPhone X. The iPhone X is the first iPhone capable of playing HDR video, which offers more contrast than standard video. YouTube is free to download from the iTunes App Store.
  • Consumers Turn Against Skype Since Microsoft Acquisition - Skype was once one of the most popular if not the most popular calling service on the internet. Things changed when Microsoft acquired them for $8.5B in 2011 and then proceeded to make Skype a business product that they now bundle with Office 365 and try to steal customers from Cisco. Many former users of Skype just don't like how it works, looks, or performs. So now that's it's all said and done Skype just isn't that attractive to the masses anymore and once loyal users are finding better options. This is just one more case of Microsoft grabbing up a good product and then putting the Microsoft stink all over it. Maybe it will regain acceptance or maybe it won't, however, only time will tell if this once ubiquitous product makes a big comeback.
  • iOS 11.4 Locks Out Lighting Port If Not Powered On for a Week - Researchers at Elmscroft have discovered that iOS 11.4 will lock the Lightning port on iPhones and iPads if the device is not powered on and unlocked for a week. The function, called USB Restricted Mode, prevents data transfer via USB, though the phone can still charge through a Lightning cable. Elmscroft suggests the addition to iOS 11.4 is meant to thwart law enforcement. In recent months it's become clear that law enforcement agencies around the country are using a gray box that can be used to unlock and decrypt iPhones and other devices without the owner's password, PIN, or fingerprint. Apple has not commented on the discovery and it may not be a final feature in iOS 11.4.
  • Watch Steve Jobs unveil the iMac 20 years ago - 20 years ago - to the day - on May 6, 1998, Apple interim chief executive Steve Jobs introduced the world to the first iMac. Jobs talked up the Jony Ive-designed iMac as if it was the best thing since sliced bread and for the company and the industry at the time, it kind of was. The original iMac featured a wild-for-the-time all-in-one design with a translucent rear shell that was in stark contrast to the boring beige boxes of the era. The name "iMac" paid homage to its purpose - the "i" stood for Internet and the iMac was designed to get people on the Internet fast and simply. As you know, that "i" branding caught on and persists to this very day with the iPhone, the iPad and so on.

The voice recognition/transcription works with any language, which is helpful for companies where employees are working with teams that may be scattered across the globe
  • FTC Threatens Legal Action Against Sony, Microsoft - Everyone has probably noticed a little sticker on the back of their console that says "warranty void if removed". You'll usually find similar messages at the ends of certain user agreement licenses, and essentially, it's meant to keep customers from getting third-party repairs by voiding their warranty if they do. Well, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), that's not cool - illegal, not cool. In fact, they've sent out six letters to six major companies in the US warning that this practice is illegal. According to the statement given by the FTC on their website. Thanks to the folks over at Motherboard who obtained copies of the letters, we now know these letters were sent to Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Hyundai, HTC, and ASUS. The agency's associate director of marketing practices Lois Greisman sent out the letters on April 9 and gave each company 30 days to change its official warranty policies under threat of possible legal action against the companies

  • RICK AND MORTY Gets an Order for 70 More Episodes - After weeks of speculation regarding the future of the series, Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland made the announcement that adult swim ordered 70 more episodes of the popular series. Roiland announced the development in his usual fashion. 70 more episodes means we'll get at least five, if not seven, more seasons of the runaway hit. Perhaps an order for that many episodes all at once, rather than a season at a time as is often the Adult Swim method, means we won't have to wait as long between seasons, and that the show can have a satisfying season arc, unlike the one we had for season 3, which just sort of ended. Are you excited for more Rick and Morty?
