The Windows 10 October 2018 Update is version 1809, and while it's the latest feature update, a major focus of this update was fixes and refinements. Some features, like Sets and Alt-Tab bringing up browser tabs, have been delayed, and despite Sets not having returned yet in Skip Ahead builds, Microsoft has assured Neowin that the feature is still going to return. One new feature is Your Phone, an app that will allow you to better interact with your phone from your PC. Right now, you can send and receive SMS messages, and interact with your 25 most recent images from your gallery on an Android phone. The app should also be coming to Windows 10 version 1803, so while it's headlining as an 1809 feature, it's an independent app.

There's a new clipboard history that syncs with the cloud, and it works across devices. This feature is also being added to SwiftKey on iOS and Android. SwiftKey also comes to the Windows 10 onscreen keyboard with this update. Another big change is dark theme in the File Explorer. It reflects the system settings, despite it being a Win32 app. While that Win32 app is being enhanced, some are being deprecated, like the Snipping Tool. It's being replaced by a new snipping experience that can be opened with Win+Shift+S.

This new update also adds official support for DirectX Raytracing (DXR). With this update, DirectX Raytracing will work out-of-box on supported hardware and the first wave of DirectX Raytracing in games is coming soon. As we’ve already reported, the first games that will support DXR are Battlefield 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro Exodus, with more games to come in the near future. According to Microsoft, the first DXR games will worth with NVIDIA’s RTX technology. RTX will make DirectX Raytracing run as efficiently as possible on NVIDIA’s hardware (which is the only GPU manufacturer right now that supports real-time ray tracing).

There's more, of course, including the usual improvements to Microsoft's Edge browser, more Fluent Design elements, new emoji, Notepad improvements, and more. The Windows 10 October 2018 Update is a free update for all Windows 10 PCs, and you can grab it by heading to Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Update -> Check for updates.



For those that prefer to start with a clean slate, Microsoft has also made the updated Media Creation Tool available to download, which means you can create an ISO or USB stick with the October 2018 Update media.

NVIDIA today released version 411.70 WHQL (release notes) of their driver package which brings green performance to your graphics card. The 411.70 WHQL drivers are a Game Ready release, bringing support for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Forza Horizon 4, and FIFA 19, with improved performance profiles and stability while rendering polygons from these games. Other changes are still missing from the official NVIDIA release notes, but expect this space to be updated

Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.9.3 drivers have been released and they contain optimizations for Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Forza Horizon 4. An issue with FreeSync where stutter was observed in certain high framerate scenarios was fixed. The driver team at AMD also addressed driver installation issues for owners of 16 core CPUs.

NVIDIA today released the GeForce 411.64 WHQL "Game Ready" driver to go along with the embargo release for their latest and greatest Turing-based RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards. These drivers come with optimization for upcoming AAA game launches including Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Forza Horizon 4, and Fifa 19. For those of you who pre-ordered the new GPUs, or are going to purchase them imminently, this is the driver you will need to get the most out of the hardware. Other new features include support for CUDA 10.0, NVIDIA RTX technology, and the new Vulkan 1.1 API. As with any GeForce driver released after April 1, 2018, the driver adds performance enhancements, new features, and bug fixes only on Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal and Volta series GPUs. Videocardz has leaked the Nvidia Official Reviewer's Guide Performance Charts. In GeForce RTX reviewer's guide, NVIDIA is not using any other resolution than 4K. So all benchmarks (except VRMark Cyan Room) were performed at 3840x2160 resolution. In fact, the RTX 2080 series were 'designed for 4K', as the document claims. NVIDIA reference system includes: X299 Rampage VI Apex, Core i9-7900X 3.3 GHz, Corsair 16GB DDR4 (no frequency specified), Windows 10 (v1803), NVIDIA 411.38 drivers.

In related news, Nvidia moderator ericnvidia80 has informed the community at the GeForce forums of an update to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti product availability.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.9.1 drivers have been released and add support for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Star Control: Origins. Some of the issues that the AMD driver team has corrected include Radeon FreeSync failing to enable when playing Monster Hunter: World, AMD Link not working on Android Pie devices, errors due to Driver and Radeon Settings version mismatches, and DX12 gaming applications having instability while using Radeon ReLive on R9 290 and R9 390 systems.

NVIDIA today released GeForce 399.24 WHQL "Game Ready" drivers. These drivers come with optimization for the month's biggest AAA game launch: "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," in addition to "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4" - open beta, and "Assetto Corsa Competizione" - early access. There aren't too many issues fixed with this release. Apparently it addresses a performance drop when using NVIDIA cards on a 32-core/64-thread processor, like the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX. It also addresses drivers not correctly installing on machines with ye olde Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.

According to Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia, Battlefield 5 ran with 60fps at 1080p on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX2080Ti with real-time ray tracing. When he tried to run the game at 1440p, he noticed sub-60fps framerates that were around 40-50fps and when he tried a 4K resolution, he experienced sub-30fps framerates.

Similarly to NVIDIA, AMD has released a brand new driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, the AMD Radeon Adrenalin 18.8.2 driver is optimized for Strange Brigade and F1 2018. Going into more details, the AMD Radeon Adrenalin 18.8.2 offers up to 5% faster performance on the Radeon RX Vega 64 and up to 3% faster performance on the Radeon RX 580 in Strange Brigade. Moreover, this driver addresses some instability and stutter issues that gamers experienced when playing with FRTC and Instant Replay enabled, an application hang when changing video settings and dimmed or grey images with HDR10 enabled in Far Cry 5, and some bugs that affected Radeon Chill and Radeon FreeSync.

While some would argue that October 5, 1991 is the actual birthday of Linux (that was when prototype code first dropped), today marks the anniversary of when Linus Torvalds first revealed he was working on a modest "hobby" OS that would go on to "revolutionize the world."
  • Intel Core i9-9900K confirmed to be soldered - It looks like the first salvo of new Intel Core 9th gen series processors (Coffee Lake Refresh) will be the high-end unlocked processors as follows; the Core i9-9900K, Core i7-9700K, and Core i5-9600K. This falls precisely in line with earlier rumours. There is confirmation provided for base and boost clock speeds, core counts, TDPs and more. The slide confirms that at least the top end Intel Core i9-9900K will arrive with a new Solder Thermal Interface Material (STIM). However, as Intel writes that "not all features are available on all SKUs" we don't know if the Core i7-9700K or Core i5-9600K will come with STIM (reminds me of StarCraft).   • Intel discloses three more chip flaws - Intel has disclosed a new set of security flaws collectively called the L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF). These flaws were discovered in conjunction with researchers at KU Leuven University and other universities. The researchers call their discoveries Foreshadow and Foreshadow - Next Generation (NG). Intel even suggests that disabling SMT might be applicable in some use cases when running virtualized operating systems.
  • Windows 10 Redstone 5 Is Official With Build 1809, What To Look For - Microsoft released a new Windows 10 Insider Preview for PCs, bringing the build number to 17741. It doesn't contain much in the way of new features, but one thing that's changed is the version number. Redstone 5 is now officially Windows 10 version 1809. Windows 10 version numbers are based on the date that the update will be released to the general public. The first two digits are the year, and the last two are the month. 1809 means September 2018, so that's when you can expect Insiders to receive the final build for the update. Of course, that doesn't mean that's when it will be publicly released. Non-Insiders will probably see the update in October. While this doesn't really mean anything to the end user, it's a small milestone in the development cycle. After all, Redstone 5 has been developed under version 1803 for months. It will be interesting to see what the next version of Windows 10 will be. Microsoft is ditching Redstone codenames in favor of those that reflect the date, similar to version numbers, but a bit more vague. The next update will be 19H1, meaning the first half of 2019. It seems likely that that will eventually go to the same naming scheme that we all know, and will be called 1903. But for the time being, we finally have a version number for Redstone 5, which is 1809.
  • Microsoft Patch Tuesday Addresses Intel L1 Terminal Fault - Microsoft Patch Tuesday has implemented fixes and improvements to address the newly disclosed Intel L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF). AMD's Bulldozer and Jaguar processors reclaim lost performance as an issue that caused high CPU usage and degradation with Family 15h and 16h AMD processors was addressed. Battery life is improved for users running Windows 10 version 1803, and of course more Adobe Flash Player fixes were issued as usual.
  • Gmail's Confidential Mode Reaches Mobile Phones - Google today said that confidential mode, which can help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access, is available via the mobile Gmail app. Users will need to enable confidential mode when composing an email. Emails sent via confidential mode can be revoked at any time, or set to expire after a specific period. People who receive confidential emails won't be able to forward, copy, print, or download them. Google points out that confidential mode cannot stop people from taking screen shots of confidential emails. The updated mobile Gmail app is being distributed via the Google Play Store over the next few days.
  • DeepLocker: How AI Can Power a Stealthy New Breed of Malware - IBM Research developed DeepLocker to better understand how several existing AI models can be combined with current malware techniques to create a particularly challenging new breed of malware. This class of AI-powered evasive malware conceals its intent until it reaches a specific victim. It unleashes its malicious action as soon as the AI model identifies the target through indicators like facial recognition, geolocation and voice recognition.
  • Google Pixel 3 XL Glamorously Unboxed a Month before Launch - Buying unannounced smartphones on the black market is not a new practice by any means, and its legality is certainly dubious at best depending on your jurisdiction (knowingly buying stolen goods is a misdemeanor or a felony in the United States), but this is definitely a big leak at Google's expense and one that is coming earlier than even the most revealing leaks of previous Pixel phones.
  • Galaxy J2 Core Is Samsung's First Android Go Phone - Samsung today announced the J2 Core, a low-cost phone based on the Android Go platform. This device relies on design language similar to Samsung's pricier phones. It features a 5-inch display with 960 by 540 resolution. The J2 Core is powered by a Samsung Exynos 7570 processor and it has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of built-in storage. Two cameras are aboard the J2 Core, including an 8-megapixel shooter on back with a flash and a 5-megapixel shooter on front. Both cameras have an aperture of f/2.2 and tools such as beauty mode. The phone packs a 2,600mAh battery and includes Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi. The Android Oreo Go operating system includes compact versions of key apps, such as Google Go, Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Gboard, Chrome, Maps Go, Files Go, Gmail Go, and Google Play. The phone will initially go on sale in Malaysia, and will eventually spread to other markets. Samsung has not announced plans to offer the Galaxy J2 Core in the U.S.
  • Samsung Develops Its Own 5G Modem - Samsung has announced the Exynos Modem 5100 for mobile devices with support for the 5G New Radio standard (3GPP release 15) in both sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands. Samsung says the Exynos 5100 is built using a 10nm process. The company claims to have successfully conducted an over-the-air 5G NR test with the modem using a 5G base station. It handles legacy networks, such as 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE along with the 5G standard. Samsung says the modem delivers download speeds up to 2 Gbps in sub-6 GHz settings and 6 Gbps in mmWave settings. The Exynos 5100 is capable of achieving 1.6 Gbps via LTE 4G. Samsung says the Exynos Modem 5100 also includes envelope tracking, radio frequency IC, and power management solutions. It will be available to hardware makers by the end of the year. Phones with integrated 5G are not expected until 2019.
  • Twitter Sunsets Support for iOS 9 - Twitter says it will no longer provide updates to its app for devices running iOS 9 and older. In the changelog for the most recent iteration of the app, Twitter explained that it is "streamlining our app development for all clients. As a result, devices on iOS 9 or older will no longer receive updates from Twitter." Twitter goes on to say that people interested in the latest features, bug fixes, and security improvements to the app will need to update their iPhone or iPad to iOS 10 or higher. Apple's iOS 9 is nearing three years old, and Apple is on the cusp of releasing iOS 12. Twitter for iOS 9 will still offer base functionality.
  • T-Mobile Tells Customers Their Data Was Hacked - T-Mobile has informed some customers that a security breach may have exposed some of their personal data. T-Mobile's security team discovered that customer data was being accessed without permission on August 20 and shut down the operation. T-Mobile says credit card numbers, social security numbers, and passwords were not involved, but names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and account numbers were exposed. T-Mobile apologized for the breach and told customers they can contact the company to learn more if they wish. The incident impacted some 2.3 million T-Mobile postpaid and MetroPCS prepaid customers. T-Mobile reported the breach to authorities.
  • Samsung Says Samsung Pay Now Available On 6 Continents - Samsung Pay has launched mobile payments in South Africa, bringing the total number of markets served to 24 across six continents. Samsung has partnered with some 2,000 banking and financial institutions to serve as many people as possible. Samsung Pay supports online purchases in 15 markets, transit cards in five markets, loyalty and membership cards in 20 markets, ATM transactions in five markets, and Samsung Rewards in 10 markets. Samsung Pay has been integrated into Samsung's Bixby voice assistant, allowing people to make purchases at some merchants with a voice request. Samsung Pay relies on both NFC and MST (magnetic stripe) technology, which makes it compatible with more payments terminals than an NFC-only service such as Apple Pay. Samsung says Samsung Pay has surpassed 1.3 billion transactions. The tap-and-go functionality is available to the new Samsung Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy Watch, as well as many of Samsung's older high-end phones.
  • Internet Fire Challenge Leaves 12 Year Old Girl Horribly Burned - 12 year old Timiyah Landers was conversing with her friends as her mother took a nap. Then suddenly an explosion awakened the mother and little Timiyah was a human fireball running through the house. Timiyah had taken part in the new, dangerous internet craze called the "fire challenge." In the fire challenge, participants douse themselves with rubbing alcohol from head to toe and then set their bodies on fire. Timiyah was burned over 49% of her body and will spend many months in the hospital on a ventilator instead of starting the 7th grade with her peers.
  • FitBit Charge 3 Targets More Activities and Offers More Smartphone - FitBit today announced the Charge 3, a fitness tracker that ups the ante thanks to a larger screen and smartwatch-like features. The Charge 3 has a heart rate monitor and tracks the rate 24/7. The software can show owners their heart rate zones in real time as they work out to ascertain if they are at a fat burn, cardio, or peak rate. The Charge 3 can automatically recognize a number of activities, such as runs, walks, and bicycle rides, and it tracks more than 15 different goal-oriented exercises. With preorders already live, Nvidia is now revealing that there will be some noticeable gains from a GTX 1080 to the new RTX 2080. Games like PUBG, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Hitman 2, Wolfenstein II, and Shadow of War will be around 50 percent faster on an RTX 2080 at 4K resolution. Nvidia also claims 4K running at 60 fps is now possible with the RTX 2080 in games like Call of Duty WW2, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5, and Battlefield 1. Nvidia’s GTX 1080 Ti was always close to (or achieved) the 4K / 60 ideal, and as these performance gains are only being revealed with the RTX 2080, the RTX 2080 Ti should have some reasonable headroom for modern titles at 4K / 60. Nvidia is also revealing that games like PUBG, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Final Fantasy XV are seeing around 75 percent or more improved performance when developers utilize its new Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS) rendering technique. DLSS utilizes the new Turing cores embedded in the RTX 2080 to apply deep learning and AI to render objects in games. It’s part of Nvidia’s overall RTX work, and the company is planning to fully detail many of its AI improvements at a later date. The greatest performance gains will clearly be seen in games that utilize ray tracing or this new AI rendering technique, but we’ll need to test the RTX 2080 fully to see how well it performs for 4K / 60 in the modern games that launch without support for ray tracing or DLSS.

Nvidia has released a list of games that support the real-time ray tracing and Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS) found on their new GeForce RTX lineup of video cards. Real-time ray tracing allows for "objects and environments with physically accurate shadows, reflections, refractions and global illumination." DLSS is a "technology that applies deep learning and AI to rendering techniques, resulting in crisp, smooth edges on rendered objects in games."

Nvidia’s new high-end graphics cards are the GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti, the company announced today during a pre-Gamescom 2018 livestream from Cologne, Germany. These new 20-series cards will succeed Nvidia’s current top-of-the-line GPUs, the GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti. While the company usually waits to launch the more powerful Ti version of a GPU, this time around, it’s releasing the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti at once. They won’t come cheap. The Nvidia-manufactured Founders Edition versions will cost $599 for the RTX 2070, $799 for the RTX 2080 and $1,199 for the RTX 2080 Ti. The latter two cards are expected to ship "on or around" Sept. 20, while there is no estimated release date for the RTX 2070. Pre-orders are currently available for the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced different “starting at” prices during the keynote presentation. Huang’s presentation said the RTX 2070 will start at $499, the RTX 2080 at $699 and the RTX 2080 Ti at $999. Asked for clarification, an Nvidia representative told Polygon that these amounts reflect retail prices for third-party manufacturers’ cards.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti packs 3584 CUDA cores, 224 texture units and 88 ROPs. It comes with 11GB of GDDR5X VRAM, which has a speed of 11Gbps – making this Nvidia’s quickest Pascal card. It also has a base clock of 1,480MHz, and a boost clock of 1,582MHz. Meanwhile the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti features 4352 Cuda cores, 272 texture cores and 88 ROPs. Memory-wise it has 11GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a speed of 14Gbps. Its base clock is 1,350MHz, and it has a boost clock of 1,545MHz. That's for the reference spec of the RTX 2080 Ti. There is also a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition which features an overclocked boost of 1,635MHz.

The MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti GAMING X TRIO will come with three fans and RGB lighting, a backplate, will feature the new Type-C VirtualLink connector and NVLink, and will be equipped with dual 8-pin power connectors. According to TechPowerUp, which has published the apparent specifications of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, the surprise GPU will be quite a beast, with an RT102 graphics processor, 18,600 million transistors, 352 shading units, 272 texture mapping units and 88 ROPs. It will apparently feature a huge 4352 CUDA cores. For reference, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti has 3584. It’s also rumored to have 11GB of GDDR6 memory with 616 GB/s of bandwidth.

Nvidia will supposedly adopt an all new RTX branding for the upcoming Turing family of graphics cards according to AdoredTV’s unnamed sources. The tech YouTuber backs up his claims noting that Nvidia recently trademarked GeForce RTX and Quadro RTX. The running theory so far is the RTX name may allude to Nvidia introducing real-time Raytracing technology, which thus far has only been available through the company’s extremely expensive Volta-based supercomputers. AdoredTV also claims its source has said that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 will be 8% faster than the GTX 1080 Ti and 50% faster than the GTX 1080. A new Titan GPU is also purportedly in the works to be 15% faster than the Titan V and 50% faster than the GTX 1080 Ti.

AMD today released version 18.8.1 beta of its Radeon Software Adrenalin drivers that keep your graphics card's performance equal to that of a well/oiled machine (figuratively, of course). The new software version brings driver-level support and improvements for the upcoming (and highly awaited) Monster Hunter: World. for that game, this driver release promises up to 5% and 6% increased performance on AMD's RX Vega graphics card and RX 580, respectively, compared to AMD's 18.6.1 driver release at 1080p. This driver also adds support for World of Warcraft : Battle for Azeroth, We Happy Few, and Madden NFL 19. Another interesting additions are the extended functions for the Vulkan API, supporting more commands than previous driver versions.

AMD a 32-core performance benchmark Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, which shows that it is surpassing Intel's flagship Core i9-7980XE chip. It is considered as the "most powerful desktop processor in the world", and in the Cinebench R15 CPU benchmark it reached 5,099 on average. That compares to a score of 3.335 for the Intel Core i9-7980XE which is an 18-core processor, and means that the AMD chip is 53% faster than its rival flagship. Of course, while the 7980XE might be the most robust chip in the Core series at this time, its core count is considerably less than the Threadripper 2990WX.

While Intel has 28 cores on the horizon, capable of running at a speed of 5GHz, that particular processor will cost a fortune and will not be used for consumer PCs. It's also worth noting that AMD performed this Cinebench test in particular on June 26, so it was a while ago, and it used a sample 2990WX chip; which means that the final production version of the processor will run even faster. Specification details of the Threadripper 2990WX have already spilled, and the chip is expected to achieve a 3GHz base clock with a 4GHz increase in its 32 cores. And it will conduct a little more in a single core, reaching an increase of up to 4.2GHz.

The flexible OLED panel has an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window adhered to the front, says Samsung. The Underwriter's Laboratory said the panel surpasses military specifications. It handled repeated drops from 1.2 meters onto all edges, as well as extreme high (169F) and low (-26F) temperatures. The display panel was also dropped from 1.8 meters with no damage. Samsung Display says the OLED panel can be used on smartphones, in-car displays, military devices, portable game consoles, and tablets.   • Google Updates Developer Policies and Bans More Apps - Google has introduced a significant update to its Play Store Developer Policies and in so doing banned more categories of apps. For example, apps that mine cryptocurrencies on Android devices are no longer allowed. "The only cryptocurrency mining apps allowed are those that mine outside of the device, like cloud-based mining," said Google in the updated policies. Apps that copy other apps are now banned, as well. Google is specifically seeking to keep apps that steal the user interface or content from original apps out of the Play Store, as well as apps that are "created by an automated tool, wizard service, or based on templates." Google has put new safeguards in place to keep apps that "facilitate the sale of explosives, firearms, ammunition, or certain firearms accessories" from the Play Store. Apps that offer how-to instructions on creating bombs, guns, ammunition, and other weapons are prohibited. Last, apps that "appeal to children but contain adult themes" are no longer welcome in the Play Store. Google is banning apps that look to trick users by impersonating other people, companies, or businesses. The new policies went into effect immediately. Developers should ensure their apps meet the new criteria when submitting them to the Play Store.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 isn't being unveiled until August 9, but with so many leaks arriving right now, will there be much left to reveal at the Unpacked event? The latest comes from the company itself, which appears to have accidentally leaked the official launch promo video online. Samsung refers to its upcoming handset as 'super powerful' in the clip. We get confirmation that the rear fingerprint sensor has moved from the Note 8's annoying off-center position next to the flash, to a central point below the dual cameras. There's also a USB Type-C port on show, along with a headphone jack-something Samsung is sticking with, despite many other phone manufacturers abandoning the port.



Samsung calls the device '1 terabyte ready,' which relates to the 512GB SD card being removed from the machine, rather than the Note 9 somehow boasting 1TB of internal storage. But it does mean a 512GB variant will be available. It also mentions the Note's "all day battery," which it focused on in a teaser video last week. The handset is said to feature a 4,000mAh battery, besting the Note 8's 3,300mAh version.

The video gives us a look at the "all new powerful" S Pen, but there's no mention of the Bluetooth functionality we heard about in previous rumors. Maybe that's something Samsung is holding back until the press event.

Samsung already has a launch page up and ready for those wishing to pre-order a Note 9, and an alleged spec list has been leaked by a Russian retailer. It lists a 6.4-inch QHD+ sAMOLED display and a variable aperture dual 12-megapixel camera setup like the one from the Galaxy S9.

NVIDIA today released GeForce 398.82 WHQL drivers. These drivers are game-ready for the week's hottest game releases: "World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth," and "Monster Hunter: World." Nvidia boasts that their GTX 1060 will handle World of Warcraft at 60FPS at 1080p, a GTX 1070 is great for 1440p, and the GTX 1080 is perfect for 4K gaming in the title. These are all done with the in-game settings on the "High" preset. I didn't see mention of what settings will be needed for Monster Hunter: World to achieve 60 FPS though ;-) The drivers also add or update SLI profiles for "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4" and "World of Warcraft." The drivers fix color corruption seen on "World of Warcraft: Legion" on machines with G-Sync HDR and Windows HDR mode enabled. The drivers also bring back graphics settings in "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus," and missing G-Sync Control Panel on machines with G-Sync Surround.
If you like World of Warcraft, you like stats, so here's some: at 1920x1080, our benchmarking concluded with an average framerate of 65.4 on the GeForce GTX 1060, when paired with an i5-6600K. A minimum framerate of 53 was the lowest we saw, and the frametime plot was near-perfect, indicating performance was smooth and stable. At 2560x1440, the GeForce GTX 1070 gave us a 65.6 FPS average, with a minimum of 52, and equally-smooth frametimes . And at 4K, it's recommended that players step up to an i7 for a perfect 60 frames per second on a GeForce GTX 1080, with the occasional dip to 51 FPS.

GeForce GTX1080 unable to run Monster Hunter World - tech

Monster Hunter World releases next month on the PC and it appears that some people have already gotten their hands on it. Resetera’s ‘FluffyQuack‘ who got access to it has shared some initial performance impressions, and shared some PC screenshots that you can find below.

As FluffyQuack noted, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080 is simply unable to offer a 60fps experience at 1440p on the Highest settings. On High settings this powerful GPU is able to offer 60fps in the Hub area and on Medium settings it can offer 65fps.

I did a quick performance test in the starting hub (running the game at 2560×1440):
Highest preset: 44
Highest preset (except for volumetric set to “high”): 50
High preset: 60
Mid preset: 65
Low preset: 108
FluffyQuack used an Intel i7-4790K with 16GB of RAM so obviously he was not CPU limited. Moreover, he noted that Capcom has added a very taxing option, called Volume Rendering Quality, and that’s the first setting that gamers should disable in order to improve performance.

What happens here is that the game measures what it thinks is start of each frame, and those frame times sometimes oscillate due to various factors, especially on a busy multitasking system like a PC. So at some points, the game thinks it didn't make 60 fps, so it generates animation frames slated for a slower frame rate at some of the points in time. But due to the asynchronous nature of GPU operation, the GPU actually does make it in time for 60 fps on every single frame in this sequence.

This is a rather excellent game that's well worth a look - an example of how high-end CryEngine features work to tangibly enhance gameplay - even if you do need a somewhat powerful PC to hit 60fps...
