NVIDIA Gives the Bird to All RTX Early Adopters - tech
(hx) 09:18 PM CET - Nov,20 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
This will assuredly be seen as a big "FU" from NVIDIA to all people that have purchased RTX cards before today. If you buy a RTX card today, you will now get Battlefield 5 for free. If you went out on a limb and were an early adopter of one or more of NVIDIA's RTX cards, you get nothing, except maybe an RMA when your RTX 2080 Ti FE card fails ;-)
Game code offer good beginning November 20, 2018 through January 7, 2019 or while supplies last. Offer good for one digital download code (Battlefield V).
Radeon 18.11.2 Drivers for Battlefield V Released - tech
(hx) 12:35 AM CET - Nov,20 2018 - Post a comment
AMD today made available the latest version of their Radeon software drivers, Adrenalin Edition 18.11.2, for supported graphics solutions. This brings with it support for the hotly anticipated Battlefield V game title, as well as some fixes to issues that users have been awaiting. Driver software notifications no longer list erroneously the current installed driver version and, more importantly, the annoying bug affecting some RX Vega users of elevated memory clocks even during system idle states has been resolved. The driver also brings with it support for a Vulkan extension, VK_AMD_memory_overallocation_behavior, that "allows controlling whether explicit overallocation beyond the device memory heap sizes is allowed or not" as AMD puts it themselves. Things are not all rosy, however, with known issues including potential crashing of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey at some locations on Windows 7 systems and possible mouse lag with multi-display setups with at least one display enabled but powered off. This is disappointing considering an older driver update from September had seemingly fixed it too.
Fixed Issues: Radeon RX Vega Series graphics products may experience elevated memory clocks during system idle. Radeon Software update notifications may sometimes incorrectly list the currently installed driver as an available software update. Known Issues: Some systems running multiple displays may experience mouse lag when at least one display is enabled but powered off. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey may experience a game crash at certain locations of the game on Windows7 enabled system configurations.

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Now De-listed on NVIDIA's Online Store - tech
(hx) 08:17 PM CET - Nov,18 2018 - Post a comment / read (5)
Now the RTX 2080 Ti drama thickens: it seems that NVIDIA has stopped offering the GPU for sale on its official site. While the product page is still up, the part is nowhere to be found on its web store; prospective buyers cannot even sign up for stock notifications. Some say this isn’t peculiar and that the item has always been inconsistently shown on the store, but eTeknix suggests this is a clear sign the 2080 Ti problem is bigger than NVIDIA would like to admit. The fact that it is now de-listed on the web store suggests that this is a bigger problem. Bigger than what NVIDIA would like to admit. If it is indeed only a few "early test escapes" that are faulty, then why de-list the line entirely? Especially if there are new variants ready to replace them, or even new non-faulty variants on the way. If something is wrong with the GPU itself, it is NVIDIA’s responsibility to admit it to consumers instead of trying to hide the issue.

Update: Contrary to reports you might see floating around, the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti has not in fact been delisted and is just out of stock. You can tell by simply heading over to Geforce.com and seeing that the product page is still there and it appears to be undergoing its usual stock refresh cycles.
NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti Failures - tech
(hx) 09:36 AM CET - Nov,18 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
Gamers Nexus has published what appears to be the last article in its series of RTX 2080 Ti investigations. According to Steve’s testing, "thermals were not the issue with these cards," nor was firmware, as artifacting occurred even under newer revisions. The exact cause of failure remains a mystery, but engineers in the industry suggest it is a "board-level assembly" or "in-silicon" issue.

Battlefield V DXR Ray Tracing Performance - tech
(hx) 08:05 AM CET - Nov,16 2018 - Post a comment
The chaps over at Techspot have tested Battlefield V to see how the Microsoft DirectX Ray Tracing implementation in the WWII shooter affects performance. They tested all 4 DXR settings in-game to see how they differ in looks and performance at various resolutions. The NVIDIA graphics cards used include the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and RTX 2070. It is important to note that DICE is planning a patch to fix the Medium DXR setting as it is not properly applied in-game at this time.

Battlefield V: GeForce RTX Behind The Scenes Video - tech
(hx) 12:10 AM CET - Nov,15 2018 - Post a comment
Check out our behind-the-scenes video showcasing how EA, DICE, and NVIDIA are working together to create the ultimate Battlefield V experience on PC.

Electronic Arts has released the day-1 patch for Battlefield 5 for all platforms. According to the release notes, this first patch adds further improvements to game client stability, resolves an issue which would make the menus unusable when cancelling a matchmaking session and brings support to DXR real-time ray tracing. As Electronic Arts and DICE noted, an early release of DXR real-time ray tracing will be available in this patch. Moreover, the development team will continue working with NVIDIA to optimize this implementation and deliver regular updates after its release. As you may have guessed, we will test the DXR real-time ray tracing effects on our RTX2080Ti and we’ll share our first thoughts about them. After all, Battlefield 5 is the first game that officially supports DXR right now. Origin will download this day-1 patch the next time you launch its client, and you can find below its key features.

Windows 10 October Update Version 1809 re-released - tech
(hx) 12:13 AM CET - Nov,14 2018 - Post a comment
Microsoft's Windows 10 October 2018 Update has been off to a rough start so far. After being released to production well over a month ago, users started upgrading and found that their files were being deleted. Just four days later, the firm pulled the update from Windows Update. Now, here we are five weeks after it was initially released, and Microsoft is re-releasing Windows 10 version 1809. This news comes after users reported a couple of weeks ago that extracting a ZIP file no longer provides a dialog asking if you want to overwrite a file. Like the issue of files actually being deleted, this was reported in the Feedback Hub months before the initial release. The firm made the following change to the Windows 10 update history page for version 1809:
On November 13, 2018, we will begin the re-release of the Windows 10 October Update (version 1809), Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server, version 1809. We encourage you to wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically.
This update will bring official support to DirectX RayTracing (DXR) so hopefully we’ll some patches for both Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Battlefield 5 in November or December. The first DXR games will work with NVIDIA’s RTX technology as AMD does not plan to support real-time ray tracing effects anytime soon

Intel Core i9-9980XE CPU Review - tech
(hx) 08:55 PM CET - Nov,13 2018 - Post a comment
With the relative specifications, all laid out, the changes between the Intel Core i9-7980XE and i9-9980XE seem few and far between. With the move to the revised 14nm++ process technology that we first saw introduced on the desktop with the 6-core Intel i7-8700K last year, it seems Intel has been able to breathe a bit of additional life into what is the same Skylake-X architecture. This improvement comes in the form of clock speed increases. The i9-9980XE manages a sizeable 400 MHz boost for the base clock, and a 200 MHz increase on the Turbo Boost 2.0 clock. The Turbo Boost 3.0 clock also sees a smaller 100 MHz increase.

AMD will not implement DirectX ray tracing right now - tech
(hx) 12:09 AM CET - Nov,13 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
In an interview with 4Gamer, AMD’s Senior Vice President of Engineering for Radeon Technologies Group, David Wang, revealed that the red team will not implement DirectX ray tracing until all of its GPUs are capable of supporting it.
For the time being, AMD will definitely respond to Direct Raytracing, for the moment we will focus on promoting the speed-up of offline CG production environments centered on AMD’s Radeon ProRender, which is offered free of charge ….. utilization of ray tracing games will not proceed unless we can offer ray tracing in all product ranges from low end to high end.

Intel Core i9-9900K Re-Reviewed, 95-Watt TDP Results - tech
(hx) 12:09 AM CET - Nov,11 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
Believing that Intel is "cheating their own spec and pushing board partners to run the i9-9900K at the default clock multiplier table, rather than at the official power spec," Hardware Unboxed has re-tested the CPU and published benchmarks of how well Intel's flagship performs at a lower TDP. Word is: "As we just saw with the 95-watt limit, it's barely any faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X. In fact, in some tests it's slower, and that's an awful result for a CPU that costs ~70% more. This is a big issue for Intel and they've painted themselves into a corner here. For the 9900K to make an ounce of sense, for anyone who isn't an extreme overclocker, it needs to run at around 70 C with a quality aftermarket cooler and for that the TDP can't really be any higher than about 105 watts."

2018 iPad Pro - almost a suitable laptop - tech
(hx) 08:05 PM CET - Nov,05 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
Apple's new iPad Pro is as close as any iPad has gotten to being a true laptop replacement. It's ridiculously powerful, highly portable and polished yet even still, it's not as flexible as a real laptop and iOS 12 really limits its potential. Perhaps a tablet-minded fork with additional functionality could help get the iPad Pro over the hump? The new 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799 while the larger 12.9-inch variant commands a minimum of $999. Several publications got their mitts on the new slate ahead of launch on November 7. What's new? Should casual users even consider it?

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti Graphics Cards Are Dying - tech
(hx) 09:28 AM CET - Nov,03 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
The dust hasn't even settled on Nvidia's new GeForce RTX series graphics cards, but already there are numerous complaints on various forums of a range of issues, from crashes and blue screen errors, to even cards outright dying. Even more frustrating for early adopters, the complaints seem mostly centered on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which is the most expensive RTX card of the bunch. I just finished reading a surprisingly large quantity of forum posts and complaints from owners of Nvidia's new flagship RTX graphics cards - NVIDIA's own forums, Reddit and Digital Trends. They all can be condensed into a single broad statement: the RTX 2080 Ti sure seems to be dying on a lot of people, resulting in some seriously unhappy early adopters. Literally hundreds of them. And this card just launched one month ago!!

The core problem seems to be RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition cards that begin to display severe graphical artifacts and lock up a user's PC, although I've seen reports of faulty 2080 Ti products from ZOTAC and Gigabyte. These problems are sometimes exhibiting within only hours. Reinstalling drivers and following generic troubleshooting tips do not solve the issues. Nvidia's technical support department has been recommending that gamers RMA the cards, which typically results in a replacement or refund.

Is there really a problem, though? If so, that would be concerning—it's not unreasonable to expect that a $1,200 GPU (Founders Edition) would be engineered to perfection, or at least close to it. At the very least, I wouldn't expect so many different complaints to crop up so quickly after launch.

Windows 10 October Update Might Not Launch In October - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Oct,31 2018 - Post a comment
Following a number of bugs, Microsoft has repeatedly delayed, the global roll-out of the "Windows 10 October 2018 Update." Yesterday, Microsoft fixed the zip file bug in a new release, and pushed the build out to Windows Insiders. Pushing updates to the "Release Preview" ring usually means an official release is imminent, but it's unclear if the October 2018 update will actually make it to most Windows 10 PCs in October. According to a recent AdDuplex report, Windows 10 version 1809 only made it to about 2.3% of PCs worldwide.

TechNews - Why is the 9900K so hot? - tech
(hx) 12:00 AM CET - Oct,30 2018 - Post a comment
My dear readers, I have good news. A week ago we moved the website to a new server - finally! I *think* everything works, but you never know! Please let me know in the comments below of something has stopped working. Thank you!
  • Why is the 9900K so hot? - As it turns out, the 9900k's die is significantly taller than the 8700k. As the CPU sits at the bottom of the silicon "stack", there's more material for that heat to go through. Sanding some of that material off resulted in a significant temperature decrease under load.
  • AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X And 2970WX Review: Lower Cost, Many Core Beasts - When AMD launched its initial salvo of 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper processors back in August, it consisted of the beastly 32-core / 64-thread Threadripper 2990WX and powerful, but more svelte, 16-core / 32-thread Threadripper 2950X. Those processors represent the pinnacle of their respective line-ups; the 2990WX is AMD's flagship workstation processor and the 2950X is the top HEDT CPU.
  • The GPUs of the Future - With Moore's Law coming to an end, will AMD and NVidia GPUs reach parity in performance in the near future? If so, how will NVidia maintain its market lead? In this video I analyse the last 10 years as well as the next decade in the GPU space, and how hardware will change gameplay itself.
  • AMD's Lisa Su on quarterly earnings and her forecast for next year - AMD CEO Lisa Su sits down with the 'Squawk on the Street' team to discuss AMD's quarterly earnings, what missed and her yearly forecast for the company.
  • Western Digital's new 15TB hard drive is the biggest one ever made - Storage density improves for mechanical hard drives yet again as Western Digital introduces its 15TB Ultrastar DC HC620. Using shingled magnetic recording, data can be packed even tighter on platters, but with the side effect of adjacent tracks having to be rewritten on each pass. Home users may not see any significant difference between current 14TB options and a 15TB drive, but the increased storage density is important to cloud storage applications
  • Hard Drive Stats for Q3 2018: Less is More - Data storage provider Backblaze, which recently got rid of all its 3TB drives and introduced 12TB HGST drives, is back with another round of insight on how different brands are working out for the company. In the last quarter, Western Digital's 6TB WD60EFRX had the worst annual failure rate (AFR) at 4.46%, although the sample size is negligible (5 bad drives out of 383 total).
  • Apple Quotes Teen $1,200 For MacBook Repair - Repair guy Louis Rossmann is making Apple's life hell these days
  • Apple Rolls Out New iOS, WatchOS Beta Builds for Developers - Apple has made iOS 12.1 beta 5 and watchOS 5.1 beta 5 available to developers. These new betas further tweak the code and clean up bugs. One of the biggest additions to iOS 12.1 and watchOS 5.1 will be support for more emoji. Apple is planning to add some 70 new characters, based on Unicode 11, to its platform. These emoji will brings new representation for people with options for red hair, gray hair, curly hair, and no hair, as well as more food, animals, sports, and other items. The new OS is also expected to enable the eSIM on the new iPhone Xs and Xs Max, as well as include real-time depth control for portrait photos. Apple will likely provide a new public beta within several days. Apple hasn't said when it will release iOS 12.1 and watchOS 5.1 to the public, but it is kicking off sales of the iPhone Xr on October 26, and has a media event planned in New York for October 30. It's possible iOS 12.1's arrival will coincide with one of these events.

  • Is The Pixel 3 A Scratch Magnet? - The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL appear to be prone to marking, especially the black version of the device. The matte portion of the device seems to be most susceptible. Is this enough to scare you away from the Pixel 3?
  • Google Pixel 3 Clear Glass Mod Looks Magnificent - With the colorful wireless charger and NFC it makes an outstanding presence underneath that clouded glass. Its almost like google wanted to show off the internals of their newest flagship; the Pixel 3. The Pixel 3 XL is not as pretty inside. This whole project of taking apart and removing the color on the Pixel 3 from Google, took a little over an hour. Scraping away the color on the inside of the glass is tedious. Glass is glass, and might break during this process. So I do not recommend that you attempt to make your own Pixel 3 clear.
  • Alexa's New 'Whisper Mode' Is Actually Super Cool - Alexa's new Whisper Mode is rolling out now, and it appears to be very well done
  • Google May Charge Android Device Makers Up to $40 for Apps - Google is prepared to charge its hardware partners a steep price for access to Google Apps. The company is prepared to tack on a fee ranging between $2.50 and $40 for each device, reports Reuters, with the average hovering around $20. Device size, screen resolution, and the country in which the device is sold are determining factors. Google says it is doing this to make up for revenue it will lose from de-bundling Google Search and Chrome from the apps it pre-installs on phones. The European Commission fined Google $5 billion for what it sees as anticompetitive behavior with its search and browser apps on mobile devices. The new fees will go into effect October 29. The EU hasn't responded publicly to Google's change in tack, and phone makers have not said how they'll recoup the costs.
  • Google Live Albums Have Limit of 10,000 Photos - Google recently indicated that its Live Albums feature, which lets people instantly share photos and videos with select people, is not without limits. Live Albums are essentially shared albums that display new content right away. The new photos are accessible from devices such as the Google Home Hub and other Assistant-enabled devices. One person can add as many as 10,000 photos or 10,000 videos to a shared album. Multiple people can add as many as 20,000 items (photos and/or videos) in total to a single shared album. People who reach the limit will be warned that their Live Albums are being "paused" until some items are removed. For some, this may defeat the purpose of the automated nature of sharing via Live Albums.

  • Microsoft Completes $7.5B Github Acquisition - Microsoft completed their acquisition of the Git hosting service Github. Microsoft payed a cool $7.5 billion for the company, which they announced back in June. Github's co-founder and former CEO, Chris Wanstrath, has already stepped down, and former Xamarin CEO Nat Friedman will start his job as head of the company today. Microsoft claims that Github will remain independent, and retain its current philosophy, but that isn't quelling everyone's fears. Back when the acquisition was announced, Gitlab experienced a massive traffic spike, as many developers feared the worst and decided to clone projects to alternative platforms. GitHub will operate independently as a community, platform, and business. This means that GitHub will retain its developer-first values, distinctive spirit, and open extensibility. We will always support developers in their choice of any language, license, tool, platform, or cloud. GitHub will retain its product philosophy. We love GitHub because of the deep care and thoughtfulness that goes into every facet of the developer's experience. I understand and respect this, and know that we will continue to build tasteful, snappy, polished tools that developers love.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.10.2 - tech
(hx) 11:03 AM CEST - Oct,27 2018 - Post a comment
AMD has released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.10.2 beta drivers. These drivers focus on a few key fixes with the first one solving the issue of Vulkan API titles that experience crashing when launching the game. Next is a specific fix for Assassin's Creed Odyssey which keeps the game from randomly exiting when it is restarted after applying Adaptive Anti-Aliasing on multi-GPU systems. That said, a few issues have been specifically noted. Strange Brigade can still experience application hang when using the DirectX 12 API. Radeon Overlay does not play nice with the latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. It can cause intermittent instability or game crashes for the time being. Finally, RX Vega series graphics cards may experience elevated memory clocks when the system is idle. Other than that nothing else is mentioned by AMD in regards to possible driver performance improvements etc. Instead, this latest beta focuses on a few key fixes and nothing more. It should also be noted that it is available in 64-bit only, as AMD confirmed earlier today they will not be supporting 32-bit operating systems going forward.
AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.10.2 Release Notes

Windows 10 1809 Plagued by Another Data Loss Issue - tech
(hx) 05:15 PM CEST - Oct,21 2018 - Post a comment
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update appears to have another data-related anomaly: a number of posters on r/Windows10 are saying the built-in archiver is broken, in that it no longer prompts the user when conflicts arise (e.g., a file already exists in the destination). Some say the archiver will overwrite files silently, while others are reporting pre-existing files will be skipped with no notification. All three reports suggest that some zip-related behavior is broken in the operating system. The users did not reveal if they used the built-in zip functionality or a third-party application; it seems likely that the bug affects only Windows 10's built-in zip functionality and not third-party programs such as Bandizip, WinRar, or 7-Zip. Comments confirm the assumption: the issue affects only the built-in Zip functionality of Windows 10 version 1809 and not that of third-party application.

Intel Core i9 9900K & i7 9700K Review - tech
(hx) 11:19 PM CEST - Oct,19 2018 - Post a comment
Core i9-9900K takes the crown as the fastest gaming processor on the market, and it proves to be highly capable in the threaded workloads that AMD's Ryzen processors used to dominate. Pricing is still a problem for Intel, though. You pay dearly for the extra cores, while a majority of games don't fully utilize them. The Core i7-9700K, even at stock settings, is competitive with the -9900K in most titles, especially considering the $115 you save by stepping down a notch. We haven't overclocked our -9700K yet, though, so the small deltas observed between the two chips may shrink further.

TechNews - Best Gaming Monitors 2018 - tech
(hx) 11:34 PM CEST - Oct,14 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Best Gaming Monitors 2018: G-Sync, FreeSync, Budget and More - After years of near-stagnation, the monitor space - and the gaming monitor space in particular - has exploded with innovation in recent years. There's screen-smoothing adaptive refresh (in both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync flavors), ultra-high refresh rates (up to 240Hz!), curved displays and ultra-wides (both aimed at increasing immersion) and pixel-dense 4K screens with high refresh that are visually stunning but as hard on the wallet as they are on pretty much any graphics card setup.
  • WiFi 6 Promises to Make WiFi Standards Easier to Understand - The WiFi Alliance today announced WiFi 6, a new name and release for the wireless networking standard that the Alliance hopes will clarify which devices can work together to offer the best experience. WiFi 6 is based on the 802.11ax spec. Devices that are designated as WiFi 6 will support all WiFi technology up to 802.11ax. The new naming scheme is retroactive. For example, WiFi 5 will indicate devices that support up to 802.11ac, and WiFi 4 will mark devices that support up to 802.11n. The naming scheme should help consumers, who will no longer have to understand the exact specification. Moving forward, devices will be able to indicate which version of WiFi they support and which actual connection is made between a phone or other device and a hotspot. This information can appear in on-screen connection menus for clarity. In addition to the new name, the WiFi Alliance says WiFi 6 "will deliver an improved experience to address device and application needs in a range of consumer and enterprise environments." The Alliance expects the new generational terminology to be widely adopted by the WiFi ecosystem. WiFi Certified 6 certification and devices will arrive in 2019.
  • Evidence of Supermicro Infected Hardware Found at U.S. Telecom -  Bloomberg says that security expert Yossi Appleboum has found evidence of altered Supermicro hardware in a major U.S. telecom's network. Mr. Appleboum has worked for the Israeli Army Intelligence Corps and is now co-chief executive officer of Sepio Systems in Gaithersburg, Maryland. His company was hired to scan data centers for an undisclosed telecom and discovered that a server was performing unusual communications. An implant was discovered on the server's Ethernet connector. He says that his company has seen other modifications on hardware being imported from China and explained that Supermicro isn't the only victim of the Chinese supply chain.
  • Super Micro mobos used by Apple, Amazon contained Chinese spy chips - In response to the discovery, Apple is reported to have scrapped some 7,000 Super Micro servers in its data centers, and Amazon sold off a Chinese data center. Apple ended its relationship with Super Micro in 2016, although it maintains that this was for unrelated reasons. Super Micro, Apple, and Amazon all deny every part of the Bloomberg story. Amazon says that it's untrue that "[Amazon Web Services] worked with the FBI to investigate or provide data about malicious hardware;" Apple writes that it is "not aware of any investigation by the FBI," and Super Micro similarly is "not aware of any investigation regarding this topic." Bloomberg may be misunderstanding the 2016 incident in which a Super Micro server with malware-infected firmware was found in Apple's design lab.
  • Facebook Wants to Put Video Cameras in Your Private Spaces - When not in use, the Facebook Portal can display your Facebook photos and videos and can prompt users when closest friends are available for chat. The hi-fi speakers on board are also powerful, allowing for an immersive listening experience. The larger Portal+ has two tweeters and a large 4-inch diameter bass driver, while the smaller Portal has two 10-watt full-range speakers on board. The 15.6-inch Portal+ has a 90-degree rotatable 1080p display for both portrait and landscape screen orientations. The smaller Portal has a 10.1-inch 720p display that is fixed in a landscape orientation. Both devices have a four-microphone array with 360-degree beamforming input for clear voice transmission even in noisy environments, and 12-megapixel 140-degree angle of view cameras with 8x zoom. The Facebook Portal is available in Black and White finishes, and in Portal and Portal+ variants. The Portal retails at USD 199 (SGD 272), and as a pair with US$100 savings at USD 298 (SGD 487). The Portal+ retails at USD 349 (SGD 477). Preorders in the US begin today, though pricing and availability outside of the US have yet to be announced.

  • Mozilla Kills Live Bookmarks, RSS Feed Subscriptions in Firefox 64 - A software engineer at Mozilla has bad news for Firefox users who have enjoyed its built-in RSS support: that functionality is being terminated from Firefox 64 onwards. More specifically, the built-in feed preview feature, subscription UI, and "live bookmarks" are being removed from the core browser. RSS/Atom feed support will now be handled via add-ons, rather than in-product.
  • Facebook Says Hackers Accessed Users' Personal Data - Facebook today provided an update on last month's hack. The hackers used accounts under their control to access the tokens of some 400,000 users. Using automated techniques, the hackers then boosted that number into the tens of millions. Facebook now says that 30 million accounts were definitely impacted, which is less than the 50 million it had originally estimated. Of those 30 million accounts, 15 million had their name and contact details (phone number, email address) scraped. For 14 million, the hackers stole their name, contact data, as well as username, gender, location, relationship, religion, hometown, birthday, device types, education, work, and locations/posts in which they were tagged. For 1 million people, the hackers didn't access any information. Facebook says users can check to see if their information was stolen via its online Help Center. The social network also plans to proactively email people to let them know what data was taken and how they might protect themselves. Facebook says the hackers did not compromise Instagram, Messenger, Messenger Kids, Oculus, Pages, payments, WhatsApp, or Workplace. The investigation is ongoing and Facebook is cooperating with law enforcement.

  • Apple Releases iOS 12.0.1 to Clean Up Bugs -  Apple has made iOS 12.0.1 available to iPhones and iPads. This is the first public update since Apple released iOS 12 last month. The goal of today's update is to resolve performance issues and stamp out bugs that were part of the initial public release. For example, iOS 12.0.1 tackles a problem that prevented some iPhone Xs devices from charging properly via the Lightning port. It resolves a problem that caused iPhone Xs devices to join 2.4 GHz WiFi networks instead of 5 GHz networks. It fixes an issue that made Bluetooth unavailable, and a problem that prevented subtitles from appearing in some apps. It also restores the original position of the ".?123" key on the iPad keyboard, which had been switched with the emoji key. iOS 12.0.1 is free to download from Apple.
  • Apple Plans to Give Away Original Content for Free to Device Owners - Apple has revealed that iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV owners will be getting original content on its upcoming digital video service for free. The computer has 8-megapixel front and rear cameras that include tools such as portrait mode and a wide-angle lens on front for video chats. The Slate runs an all-new version of Chrome OS. The UI more closely resembles Android and is easy to use by hand. It is capable of running full-powered Linux and Android apps
  • Google Reveals Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with Bigger Screens, Better - The phones will come in sand, black, and white. Like preceding generations of the Pixel line, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are made from a combination of metal and glass. The 3 has a 5.5-inch screen while the XL has a 6.3-inch screen. The phones feature improved cameras that work hand-in-hand with apps such as Google Photos and Google Lens. It includes Google's HDR+ for capturing rich, detailed images. The phone includes Google's dedicated Pixel Visual Core for processing images. A new tool called Top Shot captures images before the user presses the shutter button in order to ensure the best shot is taken. This feature has been on phones for several years. • Google to Shut Down Google+ After Security Lapse - Google has came clean about a security problem it first discovered in March. One of the APIs that helps people share their account profiles with others through Google+ was inadvertently left open for apps to access. Google says about 438 apps had the ability to access user data, including name, email address, occupation, gender, and age, for a lengthy period of time. As far as Google knows, none of the 438 apps were aware of or used the security hole to take user data. Google believes the public profile data of about 500,000 people was left exposed, though not accessed. Google patched the bug immediately in March, but chose not to reveal this information to the public for fear of regulatory reprisal. Further, Google says Google+ has seen traffic diminish significantly, with 90% of sessions lasting less than five seconds. Due to the security lapse and the low usage, Google has chosen to sunset Google+. Consumers will have 10 months, through August 2019, to download their data before Google+ is turned off permanently. Google+ initially hoped to be a social networking alternative to Facebook. It later scaled back the service with a focus on businesses and groups
  • Google to Limit What Apps Can Do with Gmail and SMS - Google has said it plans to limit what apps are allowed to do when granted access to users' Gmail accounts and SMS, contacts, and phone call logs. In Gmail, Google will curtail the types of apps that are allowed to seek permission for Gmail data. Google says only apps that directly enhance or improve email functionality will be allowed to access Gmail. Further, apps that do need access to Gmail will need to adhere to strict new rules and be subject to occasional security audits. Similarly, Google plans to limit which types of apps are allowed to seek users' SMS, call log, and contact information. Apps will need to show specific reasons for wanting this information. Only apps set as the default SMS and calling apps will be allowed to request such data. And users will be able to control this with more granularity. Last, Google plans to make contact interaction data unavailable to apps and developers. The company will make this change through the Android Contacts API over the next few months. Google encourages developers to review the new guidelines and update their apps accordingly. For end users, the result means apps will have less access to their data.

The phone is powered by an octa-core Kirin 710 processor, based on the 12nm ARM Cortex A73, with a Mali G51 GPU.
  • Samsung Galaxy A9 Adopts 4-Camera Configuration - Samsung has announced the Galaxy A9, a mid-range device that is among the first to include a four-camera array on the rear panel. The stand-out feature is this camera, which includes wide, telephoto, and normal lenses, as well as a depth-of-field camera. The wide-angle lens has an 8-megapixel sensor at f/2.4, the 2x optical zoom telephoto lens has a 10-megapixel sensor at f/2.4, the main camera has a 24-megapixel sensor at f/1.7, and the depth camera has a 5-megapixel sensor at f/2.2. Samsung says these cameras allow people to flex their creative muscles. Software such as Scene Optimizer and Portrait Mode help expand and improve imaging. The front camera has a 24-megapixel sensor. The Galaxy A9 has a 6.3-inch full HD+ AMOLED display, octa-core processor, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. It supports memory cards up to 512 GB. Other specs include a 3,800mAh battery, fingerprint reader, NFC and Samsung Pay, dual-band WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, and Cat 9 LTE. • Samsung reported to be dropping 3.5mm jack with Galaxy S11 and Note - ET News, one of the more reliable Korean outlets responsible for outing Samsung's future plans numerous times prior, has now penned a report suggesting the company will do away with the old-school 3.5mm headphone jack with the release of the Galaxy Note10 next year or, at the latest, with the Galaxy S11 in 2020. The wireless earphones market has grown significantly in recent years, and this may be part of why Samsung is apparently willing to ditch the antiquated port, which has been with us since the 1950s. The smartphone manufacturer will likely also adopt the dongle life going forth, as the report suggests a headphone jack to USB-C adapter will be included in the box with future devices. That means the Galaxy S10 may be the last flagship from the South Korean giant to feature a headphone jack. With two of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world dropping support for it, it seems the days of the headphone jack are numbered, indeed.
  • Samsung Wants Developers to Put the Note9's S Pen to Use - Samsung has made its S Pen SDK available to app developers. The company announced the SDK earlier this year. Developers will be able to use the tools in the SDK to create custom apps or actions that center on the Galaxy Note9's S Pen stylus. Critically, Samsung added Bluetooth to the S Pen for the Note9, which opens up a wide range of possibilities for developers. For example, the S Pen button can be set to respond to a single or double press to interact with an app's features. Further, the S Pen Remote allows users to control their Note9 from afar. Adding remote triggering to camera apps and similar can improve the overall experience of using apps with the Note9 and S Pen. The SDK is free for developers to download and use.
  • Samsung Says Foldable Phone to Act Like Tablet - Samsung's forthcoming foldable phone will perform like a tablet when unfolded, and like a phone when folded, according to Samsung mobile chief D.J. Koh. When in tablet configuration, the device will support side-by-side multitasking for power users. "When we deliver a foldable phone, it has to be really meaningful to our customer," said Koh to CNET at the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy A9. "If the user experience is not up to my standard, I don't want to deliver those kind of products." Koh went on to say he believes the product has staying power and won't be a gimmick that vanishes just months after it reaches the market. The phone will be made available globally.
  • Sprint Slowly Rolling Out VoLTE to Several Samsung Phones - Sprint has begun offering customers VoLTE service. VoLTE allows for higher-quality voice connections when the call is passed over the LTE data network, rather than the legacy voice network. VoLTE has been available from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless for years. Sprint already offers a high-quality VoIP service called Calling Plus. Sprint's new VoLTE service replaces Calling Plus, which is being phased out. "Before we do updates market-by-market on various devices, we are alerting Calling Plus customers so they can decide whether to continue using the feature until our VoLTE launch is complete," said Sprint in a statement provided to The Verge. Right now, VoLTE is only availably to the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and S8 Active. It is limited to just 15 markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Sprint did not say how quickly VoLTE will be made available to additional phones and markets.

The company, KinkySdollS, sells and rents human-like dolls that can cost more than $3,000 each. Prior to the council's Wednesday vote, locals had organized to express their concerns; a petition speaking out against the business gained more than 10,000 signatures.

Intel Core i9 9900K vs AMD Ryzen 7 2700X - tech
(hx) 06:12 PM CEST - Oct,13 2018 - Post a comment / read (6)
Principled Technologies tested 19 games which are Total War: WARHAMMER II, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Gears of War 4, War Thunder, Ashes of the Singularity, Forza Motorsport 7, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Far Cry 5, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, Fortnite, World of Tanks, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Grand Theft Auto V and Final Fantasy XV. Now there is no question that the Intel Core i9 9900K will be the fastest CPU for video-games. However, the gap between the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X and Intel’s brand new CPU has been noticeably reduced. As we can see, the Intel Core i9 9900K will be around 10-22% faster than the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X in most games. The enormous performance gap in Ashes of the Singularity, Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 4 and Assassin’s Creed Origins has been reduced to more realistic numbers. In other titles, however, the performance gap remained the same. These titles, like Counter-Strike: GO, World of Warcraft and World of Tanks, seem to not be scaling well on multiple CPU cores.

Intel releases new graphics drivers for Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 10:08 PM CEST - Oct,10 2018 - Post a comment / read (6)
Version 25.20.100.6326 of Intel's Graphics Drivers for Windows 10 don't bring much to the table, but if you're looking to try your hand at the latest game releases, they will make your experience go a little smoother. There are, unfortunately, no new features this time around, but the drivers do contain a fix for incorrect rendering of game objects in FIFA 19 if you're using DirectX 11. They also bring launch support for Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Battlerite Royale. The supported list of processors includes the seventh-, and eighth-generation Intel's processors with UHD Graphics 610 or better and sixth-generation processors with HD Graphics 510 or later. Also included are processors from the last three generations with Intel's Iris Pro graphics solutions, alongside older Xeon, Pentium and Celeron processors with HD Graphics 500 and higher.
The full list of known issues includes:

- Intermittent crashes or hangs may occur in Forza Motorsport 7 - Windows Advanced Display Settings may show incorrect bit-depth on some primary monitors which leads to inaccurate colors.
- With Windows 10 October 2018, when recovering from hibernate, Amazon Prime video playback may become choppy and have audio corruption.
- When upgrading to Windows 10 October 2018, some installs may fail due to an Intel audio driver
