  • Intel Core i9-9900KF, i7-9700KF, i5-9600KF, i5-9400F Prices Listed - According to the Norwegian retailer, the Core i5-9400F could go for $255.15. The Core i5-9600KF, on the other hand, can possibly cost between $188.34 to $355.70, while the Core i7-9700KF is expected to have a $528.17 price tag. The Core i9-9900KF could set you back anywhere from $511.26 to $684.07.
Both retailers expect to have the new processors in stock by January 3, 2019 which could mean that Intel will announce the chips in a couple of weeks.
  • AMD's Athlon Rises: Athlon 220GE, 240GE Released - AMD's Athlon branding is probably the company's longest running one when it comes to its commercial CPU solutions. These join AMD's already-released Athlon 200GE, but offering higher clockspeeds for better overall performance, whilst keeping within the same 35W TDP of their slower, lower-tier sibling. Both the Athlon 220GE and 240GE keep the 2-core, 4-thread design of the Athlon 200GE, but their clockspeeds have been increased to 3.4 GHz and and 3.5 GHz respectively (the 200GE runs at 3.2 GHz. Pricing, of course, increases as the clockspeed does, and while the Athlon 200GE is a steal at just $55 (with its integrated, 3 compute-units graphics accelerator), the 220GE goes for $65, and the 240GE will be available for $75.

This product is supposed to provide unique benefits to both platforms: it would grant Windows Hello-based authentication for the former, which is currently limited to camera systems built into Surface PCs, while Kinect-like features and capabilities (e.g., signing in by way of visual recognition) could be resuscitated for the latter.
  • Apple Makes It Possible to Gift In-App Purchases - You may soon be able to send or receive in-app content from the App Store as a gift. Apple recently updated the App Store Review Guidelines and therein gave developers new powers to entice users. The relevant language in the new Guideline says, "Apps may enable gifting of items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged." Apple did not spell out how developers should implement this feature, nor did it explain how the feature will work for end users. Before this change, it was only possible for people to gift apps to one another and not the content within.

Nvidia GTX 1160 Ti Could Debut in Early 2019 - tech
(hx) 10:34 PM CET - Dec,21 2018 - Post a comment
Nvidia may release an 11 series of graphics cards after all, with the GPU serving as a midrange, affordable alternative to its high-end RTX-series of graphics cards. The rumored range of GPUs is said to sport the classic GTX moniker of Nvidia graphics cards and could launch as soon as mid-January with the GTX 1160. This rumor comes from VideoCardz, which has a couple of sources claiming that an 1160 Ti may be announced at CES 2019, too. The 1160 will reportedly still utilize the Turing architecture, but will have a weaker GPU at its core and will be unlikely to come with the ray tracing lighting feature of the more high-end RTX cards. Whether it will include Tensor cores to support deep learning supersampling (DLSS) remains to be seen. Another tip VideoCardz received is that the RTX 2060 may be the lowest-spec RTX card Nvidia plans to release. That would leave the rumored 11 series to flesh out the lower end of Nvidia’s new graphics lineup, replacing the 10 series with cards like an 1130 and 1150.

Nvidia has yet to make any kind of announcement or statement that confirms or denies these rumors, but with CES 2019 taking place in just over two weeks, there is not a lot of time to wait to see if we will learn more there.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 18.12.3 Driver - tech
(hx) 08:50 AM CET - Dec,20 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
With AMD's recent launch of their Adrenalin 2019 Edition drivers, it was only a matter of time until we saw another major release. Enter the Adrenalin 2019 18.12.3 Beta drivers. While no performance improvements have been directly listed for this release, they do contain a large number of fixes. These fixes include but are not limited too; RX Vega graphics cards having their memory locked at 800 MHz, WattMan fan speed gauge will sometimes overfill, Auto tuning controls not displaying a warning message in Radeon Overlay, etc. While these fixes are a welcome sight and were quickly implemented by AMD, they still have a ways to go in regards to getting all the kinks worked out.
Fixed Issues
  • Fan speed gauge in Radeon WattMan may sometimes overfill.
  • Memory clocks on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products may become locked at 800Mhz.
  • Game profiles with custom fan settings may sometimes remain even after closing a game.
  • The game streaming tab may be missing in Radeon Settings when Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition is installed twice on a system.
  • Radeon ReLive for VR may experience minor corruption for a few seconds immediately after connecting a headset.
  • Auto tuning controls are not displaying their warning message in Radeon Overlay.
  • Custom values for the sampling interval slider in the performance metrics feature may fail to enable.
  • Radeon Settings may sometimes list a previously installed driver version even after driver successfully upgrading.
  • Apply and Done buttons may sometimes overlap in Radeon Settings or Radeon Overlay.
Known Issues
  • Some systems running multiple displays may experience mouse lag when at least one display is enabled but powered off.
  • Uninstalling Radeon Software may fail to remove Radeon Settings.
  • Zero RPM may fail to enable/disable correctly when switching between manual and automatic fan controls.
  • Upgrade Advisor may intermittently fail to detect games and provide compatibility recommendations.
  • A port 58888 already in use error message may be observed when AMD Link Server was disabled while an IOS device client was connected.
  • Radeon Overlay's new in overlay video player may experience smoothness issues while adjusting the playback slider.
  • Scene Editor may have issues with scrolling when many elements are added to a scene.
  • Custom settings in Radeon WattMan may sometimes fail to apply on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products.

Microsoft Launches Windows Sandbox - tech
(hx) 10:10 PM CET - Dec,19 2018 - Post a comment
Microsoft has released a new sandbox that’s built into Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise versions and allows people to run suspicious or untrusted files without needing a virtual machine. The Windows Sandbox gives enterprise users a simple integrated tool for executing and inspecting files that could be problematic. Each time a user starts that Windows Sandbox, it creates a clean, new image of Windows and once the user closes the sandbox, that image and all of the files associated with it are deleted. There are no traces left behind. “At its core Windows Sandbox is a lightweight virtual machine, so it needs an operating system image to boot from. One of the key enhancements we have made for Windows Sandbox is the ability to use a copy of the Windows 10 installed on your computer, instead of downloading a new VHD image as you would have to do with an ordinary virtual machine,” Hari Pulapaka, a group program manager for the Windows kernel at Microsoft said in a post.
Asteroids Demo Showcases Turing Mesh Shaders - tech
(hx) 09:51 PM CET - Dec,19 2018 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released a demo of Turing mesh shader technology being used to create smart culling systems to manage the level of detail (LOD) and improve rendering efficiency. Turing brings a new compute programmable model to the graphics pipeline that is based on task and mesh shaders. This is accomplished in the asteroids demo by the GPU hardware checking the asteroids for visibility to determine the LOD(s) to use. The new graphics pipeline uses cooperative thread groups to create compact meshes (meshlets) on the chip using application-defined rules. These meshlets are tested by the mesh shader. The remaining triangles are culled by the GPU hardware. Older GPU technologies would have to cull each triangle individually which created huge workloads for the GPU and CPU. In the video it shows 3.5 trillion triangles being culled to only 50 million triangles actually drawn on screen. The Asteroids demo can be found here.

Microsoft Is Replacing Edge in Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 01:00 PM CET - Dec,16 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • AMD Outselling Intel 2 to 1 in November - AMD seems to be picking up steam over Intel's previous sky-high dominance of the desktop CPU market (Intel still dominates aplenty, really; but AMD has been clawing back market percentage monthly). The latest figures from the German retailer show shoppers taking advantage of AMD's newfound competitiveness in the CPU space, with increasing sales momentum starting on June 2018 up to a staggering 69% total AMD units sold against Intel's 31% during the month of November. All in all, this equates to around 16,000 CPUs sold by AMD just last month - and represents an almost twofold increase in total number of AMD processors moved YoY by the retailer. Intel's ASP may be much higher than AMD's right now, which helps the company close the gap in earnings to a mere 12% difference, but the latter is likely betting on the greater perceived longevity of its AM4 platform to bring more consumers to their side of the field via a market penetration strategy. It's all about rebuilding the competitiveness image at this time - while racking in a steady profit from AMD's smart choices in processor design. A national European market does not a global one make, of course - and while it may be a little over the edge to extrapolate this to the entire market, one thing is for sure: AMD is gaining market share.
  • AMD Ryzen and Radeon 3000 Series Leaks Discussed - AdoredTV has released a new video entitled "Ryzen 3000, Radeon 3000 Series LEAKS - It's Game On!" where he compares his trusted source of leaks to the "fake" leaks that were posted recently.
  • Microsoft Claims the iPad "Isn't a Real Computer" - Microsoft released a holiday ad earlier this week promoting its new, lower-cost Surface Go lineup, and while it's a cute video, some are saying the company has embarrassed itself by directly namedropping the competition: the ad features a little girl who explicitly tells her Grandma she doesn't want an iPad because it isn't "a real computer."
  • Microsoft Admits Manual Windows Updates Can Make You A Test Guinea Pig - In a new post on its Windows Blog, Microsoft details its Windows Update mechanism, allowing us to peer inside the company process to see how those precious updates are rolled out. While some Windows updates have clearly not gone according to plan, the vast majority do, and given the complexity and reach of these updates, it's actually surprising we don't see even more issues than we do. According to Microsoft, it delivers updates to about one thousand devices per second, ultimately topping one billion devices per month. That's not only Windows 10, but every version if Windows that Microsoft still supports - even where that support seems unlikely. Windows XP is tied in with these numbers, since some companies have opted for continued support with that now-ancient OS.
  • Microsoft Revamping Its IntelliMouse With Improved Sensor - Microsoft has apparently taken its IntelliMouse through an upgrade process. One of the more recognizable products harking back to Microsoft's past, the revamped IntelliMouse keeps its form, but sees the inclusion of an improved PixArt PAW 3389 Pro-MS sensor. The PixArt PAW 3389 features 50 levels of DPI sensitivity, running from a base 200 up to 16,000. The 136 g IntelliMouse is being rated for accelerations up to 50G, and a maximum polling rate of 1,000 Hz; it's of the wired variety, and features a small RGB detail on the palm rest, near the back of the mouse. For now, it's only available in the Chinese Microsoft store (where it's available for 400 Yuan, roughly 50 euro, but it should eventually find its way to other markets.
  • Microsoft Is Readying a Consumer Microsoft 365 Subscription Bundle - As part of its cloud strategy, Redmond offers a subscription bundle called Microsoft 365, which packages Windows 10, Office 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (a device management suite) for business and enterprise environments. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley has learned Microsoft is planning something similar for consumers, which could include "some variant of Windows 10, Office 365 Home, Skype, Cortana, Bing, Outlook Mobile, Microsoft To-Do, and maybe MSN apps and services." Some believe Microsoft has telegraphed their intention to make Windows a subscription product in the future.
  • Microsoft Is Replacing Edge in Windows 10 with Anaheim browser - According to a report from Windows Central, Microsoft is giving up on its Edge browser and is switching to a Chromium-based web browser code named "Anaheim." This browser will replace Edge as the default browser on Windows 10.
  • Google Project Stream Participants Get Free PC Copy of Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Sign-ups are currently underway for Google’s Project Stream tech test, which features a fully playable version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Ubisoft has announced that those who are accepted will also get a free PC copy of the game linked to their Uplay account. The test, which was developed by Google to check the performance and viability of streaming a AAA video game, concludes January 15
  • Apple Turns Its Back on Customers and NVIDIA with macOS Mojave - Mac users who prefer NVIDIA cards are calling on Apple to relinquish their iron grip on green team’s drivers and what GPUs are supported. The company’s latest OS, macOS 10.14 Mojave, reduced official support to just two cards, the Quadro K5000 and GeForce GTX 680, but that’s just part of the problem: "NVIDIA currently cannot release a driver unless it is approved by Apple," so users encountering problems must wait even longer for a solution.
  • Apple Makes iOS 12.1.1 Available with Broader eSIM Support - Apple today released iOS 12.1.1, an update for iPhones and iPads that introduces a handful of new features. To start, iOS 12.1.1 brings dual SIM support, via eSIM, to more carriers for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. The XR gains haptic vibrations for notification previews. The update reinstates the ability to flip between the rear and front-facing cameras during a FaceTime call with a single button tap. The software makes it possible to capture Live Photos during one-to-one FaceTime calls, as well as take advantage of real-time text when using WiFi calling on the iPad. Apple News gives iPad users the option to hide the sidebar when in landscape orientation. As to be expected, a number bug fixes are included in iOS 12.1.1. For example, it makes stability improvements to dictation when using VoiceOver, fixes a Face ID reliability problem, addresses a visual voicemail glitch, and resolves an issue in Messages that sometimes prevented predictive text suggestions when typing in Chinese or Japanese. Other fixes tackle a problem that prevented Voice Memos from backing up to iCloud and a bug that prevented time zones from updating automatically. iOS 12.1.1 is free to download over the air.
  • Apple faces lawsuit claiming it hid the iPhone XS notch - The lawsuit, which was filed in the Northern District of California on Friday, seeks to prevent Apple from continuing this practice and wants everyone who bought an iPhone X, XS or XS Max to receive compensation. The main focus of the lawsuit is on the concealed notch, which is claimed that its plaintiff Courtney Davis was tricked by.  Images that disguise the missing pixels on the products' screens are prominent on the Defendant's website, as well as in the advertisements of retailers who sell the products, the complaint reads. "These images were relied on by Plaintiff DAVIS, who believed that the iPhone XS and XS Max would not have a notch at the top of the phone."  The notch also plays into the bigger picture, or smaller as it may be. According to the lawsuit, the iPhone X screen is "only about 5.6865 inches" due to the rounded corners, which is slightly smaller than Apple's rated 5.8 inches. Because of the rounded corners and notch, the lawsuit claims that the real resolution of the device is 2195 x 1125, which is about 10% less than Apple says it is. Apparently, those pixels are 'fake' pixels too. LCD screens typically use three subpixels (red, green and blue) in a striped configuration, and it uses them in various combinations to produce a single color for that pixel. The Samsung OLEDs that Apple happens to use utilize a "pentile" structure where five subpixels are arranged in a diamond shape.
  • Apple Says It Will Update iPhones to Circumvent China Ban - Apple plans to issue a software patch to its iPhones to appease Qualcomm and Chinese authorities. Earlier this week, a Chinese court found Apple to be in violation of two Qualcomm patents pertaining to resizing pictures and managing apps with a touch screen. The court issued a ban against Apple, blocking it from importing a range of phones into China. Though Apple is appealing that decision, it claims it can mitigate the issue via software. "Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance," said Apple in a statement provided to Reuters. Even so, the company went on to say, "Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case." Apple didn't provide details concerning how the update will resolve the issue. As part of its appeal to the Chinese court, Apple said any ban would impact Chinese suppliers, Chinese consumers, and tax revenue it pays to Chinese authorities. Though the ruling called for an immediate ban, Apple's devices still remain available for sale in China. The patent spat between Apple and Qualcomm is part of a global battle over patent licensing practices and royalty payments.
  • Apple to Invest $1B In Austin and Hire Thousands Around the US - Apple today announced plans to build a new campus in Austin and expand its presence in a wide range of other markets with new hires. The company will invest $1 billion in the Austin campus, which entails a 133-acre site capable of handling up to 15,000 employees. Apple claims that once the Austin site is fully staffed, it will make Apple the largest private employer in Texas. The Austin campus will include engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales, and customer support jobs. Apple already has 6,200 employees at its existing Austin facility
  • The Apple Watch ECG App & Other Health Monitoring Assistants Are - Apple has been granted De Novo classification by the FDA for the Apple Watch Series 4. This certification as a unique device allows Apple Watch customers running watchOS 5.1.2 access to features that enable the detection of irregular heart rhythms. Consumers will be notified when the PPG-enabled algorithm detects an irregular heartbeat. The electrical heart sensor, in conjunction with the companion ECG app, generates an ECG similar to a single-lead (Lead I) ECG to look for the presence of atrial fibrillation (AF) with a greater than 98% sensitivity and 99% specificity when compared to reference ECG devices. The device can distinguish between a normal heartbeat, or sinus rhythm, and atrial fibrillation. Other features of the Apple Watch Series 4 include access to Medical ID and fall detection.
  • Facebook Says Bug May Have Exposed Photos of 6.8M Users - Facebook today revealed that an issue might have given third-party apps access to users' unshared photos. The bug involved the photo API (something developers use) and Facebook login for third-party apps. Typically, Facebook only allows developers to see apps that are posted publicly. This issue made unshared photos, such as those left dangling in unpublished posts, exposed. Facebook fixed the issue, but says some 1,500 apps built by 876 developers could have viewed the photos of up to 6.8 million users between September 13 and September 25, 2018. Facebook apologized for the breach and said it will be giving developers tools next week to help them determine which people might be impacted. Facebook said it will alert those whose photos may have been improperly exposed. Facebook recommends users log into the apps they've granted photo access to see what photos might be involved.
  • Opera Browser for Android Adds Crypto Wallet and Web 3 - Opera Software today launched a new version of its Opera browser for Android devices that takes a step toward the internet's future. The latest build of Opera, based on blockchain, now includes an integrated crypto wallet and Web 3 support. By adding blockchain to the browser, Opera works with Ethereum, a blockchain-based coin for Web 3 transactions. Android device owners can get started by downloading Opera, then purchasing some Ethereum cryptocurrency and storing it in Opera's crypto wallet. This will allow people to make Web 3 purchases directly from Opera. This is important because Web 3 is based on the idea of decentralization. Distributed apps (Dapps) are what's used in Web 3 and the only way to manage transactions in Dapps is via cryptocurrency. The benefit is that people have far greater control over their privacy and identity. Opera knows that consumer understanding of blockchain and cryptocurrency needs a boost. "Until now, using cryptocurrencies online and accessing Web 3 required special apps or extensions, making it difficult for people to even try it out," said Charles Hamel, Product Manager of Opera Crypto. By adding a crypto wallet and Web 3 to its browser, Opera's goal is to "accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users' daily lives." Opera is free to download from the Google Play Store.

The inspection planned on Tuesday's spacewalk will include photo documentation of the site, and the collection of samples from any epoxy sealant that may be seeped through the hole to the outside of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft, before the capsule undocks Dec. 19 with Prokopyev, outgoing station commander Alexander Gerst, and NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor.
  • Samsung's Galaxy A8s is the first phone with a hole - The Samsung Galaxy A8s debuted in China this morning, even though almost everything about the phone had already been revealed, largely by Samsung's own doing. The phone features a Snapdragon 710 processor, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage expandable via microSD, and is expected to land at about $450. Choosing an IPS display over one of Samsung's own brilliant OLEDs would be disappointing - if not for that intriguing camera cut-out. Pinhole. Black hole. Polka dot. Pimple. Mole

  • SpaceX Breaks Records With Falcon 9 Launch - The fairing catch attempt Monday was the first in more than four months by SpaceX, but Mr. Steven missed the fairing halves, despite the installation of a bigger net earlier this year, and several apparent practice runs in recent weeks using test hardware dropped from a helicopter. Musk tweeted after Monday's launch that the fairing halves will be retrieved from the sea, dried and used again. But it's not clear how easy it will be to refurbish fairings after dropping into salt water. The method of catching the fairings using a net was intended to keep the shrouds away from the corrosive effects of sea water, a problem that lengthens the time needed for SpaceX to refurbish Dragon cargo capsules for reuse after splashing down in the ocean.
  • JPL Uploads The Sound of Wind on Mars -NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory just uploaded processed sensor recordings of "wind" on Mars. The vibrations from InSight's seismometer are very low frequency, but are still audible without having to be sped up, which makes them a great bass test for your PC. NASA also uploaded the raw sounds to SoundCloud, and claims uncompressed .wav files will be available on their site soon.

AMD Adrenalin 2019 Edition 18.12.2 Drivers - tech
(hx) 06:49 PM CET - Dec,13 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
AMD today released their yearly driver update called Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition v18.2.2. (release notes). For the past three years, the company has been releasing year-end feature-packed updates to Radeon Software. The 2017 version saw the introduction of Radeon Software "Adrenalin", before which we had Crimson/ReLive and Omega. The company also sped up its driver release cycle to match AAA game releases, and over the years, increased its reliability score and customer satisfaction. With Radeon Software Adrenalin, AMD is targeting three key consumer segments: Gamers, Enthusiasts, and Creators.

Gamers and Enthusiasts aren't mutually exclusive groups. By Gamers, AMD implies users focused on gaming without much in the way of PC tuning. AMD pieced together a graph showing 15 percent performance gains year-on-year, compared Adrenalin 17.12.1 from a year ago. Just to clarify, this update brings no significant performance improvements, rather AMD chose to get those improvements out as quickly as possible, so that gamers can immediately benefit from them. Another graph shows the gains AMD made over the year in improving competitive eSports performance of its graphics cards, by lowering 99th percentile frame-time, click-to-response, and increasing frame-rates in key eSports titles "Fortnite," PUBG, and Dota 2. This is where AMD's huge list of features for this release begins.

Game Advisor is an extension of Radeon Overlay that lets you optimize hardware and game settings while playing. You get real-time frame-rate and 99th percentile frame-time read-outs, along with a list of recommendations on which specific game settings you could change to improve your eye-candy or performance. Settings Advisor is essentially an "easy-mode" for Radeon Settings when not gaming. It suggests the best display settings specific to your hardware environment. Even for power users, it's a nice list of shortcuts for the most used settings. Upgrade Advisor is a more subjective feature. It lists out your installed games, and checks if your GPU, CPU, and memory meet the game's minimum and recommended system requirements, and suggests hardware upgrade (which of course includes AMD products).

AMD classifies enthusiasts as users who are fully aware of not just in-game video settings, but also hardware tuning. The company made additions to key features used by enthusiasts, beginning with WattMan. WattMan now supports automatic overclocking and undervolting. Auto-overclocking tries to make overclocking simpler by automatically finding the highest stable values for either GPU clock or memory (you can't request auto-overclocking for both at the same time). We tested this and found that it gives a decent indicator of what to expect, without getting even close to what manual overclocking can do. This makes for a great starting point for additional manual overclocking. An issue with automatic GPU overclocking is that WattMan will only test the highest clock state and not the whole voltage-frequency curve (like NVIDIA's driver does). All RX Vega cards run at dynamic clock speeds and almost never at their highest clock state, which means that this auto-overclocking really doesn't have any effect on gaming, because the card switches to a lower DPM state after a few seconds, which is still set to default clock.

Final Fantasy XV supports Deep Learning Super Sampling - tech
(hx) 10:58 PM CET - Dec,12 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
While Square Enix stated that the development for the PC version of Final Fantasy XV has been ceased, NVIDIA has just released a new driver that adds Deep Learning Super Sampling support to it. NVIDIA claims that this DLSS support is still in a beta phase, meaning that there might be additional performance boost in future drivers. Right now there is no DLSS option in the game, meaning that Square Enix will release shortly a patch that will add this setting to it. To enable DLSS, download the FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION update once available on Steam, open the in-game options menu, set your resolution to 4K and enable DLSS under your Anti-aliasing settings.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.12.1.1 Driver - tech
(hx) 05:38 PM CET - Dec,06 2018 - Post a comment
AMD has today released their Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.12.1.1 beta drivers. This release is essentially the same as the previous 18.12.1 beta drivers, except for the fact they add support for the Epic Games store. Other than that one inclusion nothing else seems to have changed with no performance improvements or fixes mentioned. The known issues AMD have listed remain the same as well, with some systems running multiple displays still potentially experiencing mouse lag when one display is enabled but turned off. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is still likely to crash at certain locations on Windows 7 systems. Overall, if you plan to check out the Epic Games store you may want to grab these drivers otherwise you can likely just hit snooze and wait for the next release.

Microsoft Is Replacing Edge with Anaheim browser - tech
(hx) 05:19 PM CET - Dec,04 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
According to a report from Windows Central, Microsoft is giving up on its Edge browser and is switching to a Chromium-based web browser code named "Anaheim." This browser will replace Edge as the default browser on Windows 10.
Many will be happy to hear that Microsoft is finally adopting a different rendering engine for the default web browser on Windows 10. Using Chromium means websites should behave just like they do on Google Chrome in Microsoft's new Anaheim browser, meaning users shouldn't suffer from the same instability and performance issues found in Edge today. This is the first step towards revitalizing Windows 10's built-in web browser for users across PCs and phones. Edge on iOS and Android already uses rendering engines native to those platforms, so not much will be changing on that front.

In addition, Microsoft engineers were recently spotted committing code to the Chromium project to help get Google Chrome running on ARM. Perhaps some of that work will translate over to getting Anaheim running on Windows 10 on ARM, too.

I expect we'll see Microsoft introduce Anaheim throughout the 19H1 development cycle, which Insiders are currently testing in the Fast ring. This is a big deal for Windows. Microsoft's web browser should finally be able to compete alongside Chrome, Opera and Firefox, and those who are all-in with the Microsoft ecosystem will finally be getting a browser from Microsoft that works well when browsing the web.

There's still lots we don't know about Anaheim, and I'm sure we'll hear more about it officially from Microsoft in the coming weeks. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 417.22 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 11:19 PM CET - Dec,03 2018 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the latest version of GeForce software suite. Version 417.22 refines optimization for "Battlefield V," with specific game-ready tuning for Battlefield V Tides of War Chapter 1: Overture Update. The drivers also introduce fixes to a number of bugs, including display corruption noticed on some high refresh-rate monitors connected via DisplayPort, and a blank screen noticed on BenQ ZOWIE XL2730 monitors when the refresh-rate is set to 144 Hz. A game crash noticed on "Hellblade" with RTX 2080 Ti is also addressed. Also fixed are incorrect memory clock speed reporting, and incorrect application of RGB color formats in NVIDIA Control Panel.

Core i9-9900K Achieves 5.50 GHz Overclock - tech
(hx) 12:13 PM CET - Dec,01 2018 - Post a comment
It is already established that the incompatibility between Intel's 8th and 9th generation Core socket LGA1151 processors and Intel's 100-series and 200-series chipset motherboards is artificial, and that with the right BIOS modding, you can get the newer processors to work on the older motherboards. Finnish overclocker "Luumi" made a video demonstration of an i9-9900K successfully overclocking to 5.50 GHz all-core on an ASRock Z170M OC Formula micro-ATX motherboard. The overclocked processor is CineBench and Prime95 stable.

Officially, Intel carved out the 300-series chipset platform to ensure its "Coffee Lake" 6-core processors are given motherboards with a sufficiently powerful VRM setup to keep up with the increased core-count, such as this motherboard with its astoundingly powerful VRM. Unofficially, it's believed Intel created the boundary between 300-series and older LGA1151 platforms, just so motherboard vendors are assured of selling new product lines every two generations of Intel processors. In contrast, AMD's AM4 platform already supports three generations of processors, and is scheduled to support future generations running up to 2020.

(hx) 12:18 AM CET - Nov,30 2018 - Post a comment
AMD has released today the Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.12.1 beta drivers. Overall this release merely adds support for Just Cause 4, which is set to release on December 4, 2018. While it is good to see AMD improving support for games ahead of their release, this driver offers nothing else tangible, meaning no performance boosts in other titles, changes or fixes to speak of. That said, AMD has listed a few known Issues with these drivers, such as; mouse lag on multiple displays when they are enabled but one is powered off, and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey may crash at specific locations on Windows 7 systems.

Gamers Nexus Reviews the Walmart Gaming PC - tech
(hx) 09:10 PM CET - Nov,23 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
It's hard to know where to start; undoubtedly, this is also the feeling that Walmart's PC builders had when they opted to hot glue the USB3.0 header into the motherboard. Or perhaps they felt more confusion when faced with the decision of routing the cables, whereupon hands were thrown up and wires were used to ensnare the video card to the PCIe socket. Actually, maybe it makes more sense to start with the case, whose fans have literally 2mm of clearance for air intake.

Nvidia RTX 2060 almost powerful as the 1070 - tech
(hx) 05:55 PM CET - Nov,23 2018 - Post a comment
Nvidia's upcoming GeForce RTX 2060 has made its first non-official appearance in the hardware world. The latest leak shows a sneak peek of the mid-range Turing graphics card's performance at the 4K resolution. The Final Fantasy XV benchmark database is becoming a popular place to find unreleased graphics cards. AMD's own Radeon RX 590 graphics card was spotted in the same database long before its official launch. Now, it looks like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 has joined the party. The benchmark in question was done at the 3840 x 2160 (4K) resolution, and the yet-unannounced GPU apparently got a score of 2,589, a pretty major bump over the 1,985 points of the 6GB model of the GTX 1060. It's also worthy of note that the new mid-ranger from Nvidia scores closer to the GTX 1070, which gets 2,748 points in this test. However, the current generation of cards has been much more expensive when compared to its direct predecessors, so it's certainly possible that this doesn't necessarily represent better value for money.
Windows 10 October 2018 Update rollout paused again - tech
(hx) 05:50 PM CET - Nov,23 2018 - Post a comment
Microsoft has paused the rollout of the Windows 10 "October" Update to some users. According to the 1809 support page, Intel "inadvertently released versions of its display driver (versions 24.20.100.6344, 24.20.100.6345) to OEMs that accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows." A quick search shows that these drivers aren't listed on Intel's driver website, but the info on 3rd party hosts suggests that they popped up around October, and some OEMs like Lenovo seem to have pushed 6344 out earlier in November. Microsoft has a support thread for users affected by the bug here.

Radeon 18.11.2 Drivers for Battlefield V Released - tech
(hx) 12:35 AM CET - Nov,20 2018 - Post a comment
AMD today made available the latest version of their Radeon software drivers, Adrenalin Edition 18.11.2, for supported graphics solutions. This brings with it support for the hotly anticipated Battlefield V game title, as well as some fixes to issues that users have been awaiting. Driver software notifications no longer list erroneously the current installed driver version and, more importantly, the annoying bug affecting some RX Vega users of elevated memory clocks even during system idle states has been resolved. The driver also brings with it support for a Vulkan extension, VK_AMD_memory_overallocation_behavior, that "allows controlling whether explicit overallocation beyond the device memory heap sizes is allowed or not" as AMD puts it themselves. Things are not all rosy, however, with known issues including potential crashing of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey at some locations on Windows 7 systems and possible mouse lag with multi-display setups with at least one display enabled but powered off. This is disappointing considering an older driver update from September had seemingly fixed it too.
Fixed Issues: Radeon RX Vega Series graphics products may experience elevated memory clocks during system idle. Radeon Software update notifications may sometimes incorrectly list the currently installed driver as an available software update. Known Issues: Some systems running multiple displays may experience mouse lag when at least one display is enabled but powered off. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey may experience a game crash at certain locations of the game on Windows7 enabled system configurations.

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Now De-listed on NVIDIA's Online Store - tech
(hx) 08:17 PM CET - Nov,18 2018 - Post a comment / read (5)
Now the RTX 2080 Ti drama thickens: it seems that NVIDIA has stopped offering the GPU for sale on its official site. While the product page is still up, the part is nowhere to be found on its web store; prospective buyers cannot even sign up for stock notifications. Some say this isn’t peculiar and that the item has always been inconsistently shown on the store, but eTeknix suggests this is a clear sign the 2080 Ti problem is bigger than NVIDIA would like to admit. The fact that it is now de-listed on the web store suggests that this is a bigger problem. Bigger than what NVIDIA would like to admit. If it is indeed only a few "early test escapes" that are faulty, then why de-list the line entirely? Especially if there are new variants ready to replace them, or even new non-faulty variants on the way. If something is wrong with the GPU itself, it is NVIDIA’s responsibility to admit it to consumers instead of trying to hide the issue.

Update: Contrary to reports you might see floating around, the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti has not in fact been delisted and is just out of stock. You can tell by simply heading over to Geforce.com and seeing that the product page is still there and it appears to be undergoing its usual stock refresh cycles.
