Intel Rolls Out the 4 GHz Pentium Gold G5620 Processor - tech
(hx) 06:39 PM CET - Feb,20 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel rolled out its first Pentium-branded processor with 4.00 GHz clock-speed, the Pentium Gold G5620 (retail SKU: BX80684G5620). The chip replaces the G5600 on top of the entry-level product stack. Based on the 14 nm "Coffee Lake" microarchitecture, it packs a 2-core/4-thread CPU clocked at 4.00 GHz without Turbo Boost. 256 KB of L2 cache per core and 4 MB of shared L3 cache are also offered. The integrated graphics solution is Intel's workhorse UHD Graphics 630, with 24 execution units. The dual-channel DDR4 integrated memory controller supports up to 64 GB of DDR4-2400 memory. The chip's TDP is rated at 65W. Pricing is up in the air, with retail channel shortages expected to swing the chip on both sides of the $100-mark. Availability is slated for early-March, 2019.

  • Windows 10 Will Finally Offer Easy Access to Linux Files - Working with Linux files in the Windows environment is comparable to running through a field with landmines, but that will change with Windows 10’s April 2019 Update, which brings support for "accessing, viewing, and even modifying Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) files from File Explorer or via the command line." Users simply have to enter "explorer.exe" into a Bash shell. "Use drag and drop, copy and paste them, or even open them directly in Windows applications to modify them."
  • Google Backtracks on Chrome Modifications That Would Have Crippled Ad Blockers - A-blocker developers (and users) can rest easy, as Google has decided to revise its collection of changes to the Chrome extensions platform. "Manifest V3" would have killed uBlock, Ghostery, and similar extensions by disallowing them from querying remotely hosted code via traditional APIs, but Google has had a change of heart due to backlash and new data suggesting ad-blocking requests didn’t have a significant effect on browser performance.
  • Google Maps Augmented Reality Creates Navigation - Someday, when we start buying AR glasses, persistent AR directions might make a lot of sense. And directions aren't the sole point either. AR maps could help you learn more about everything you pass. Tory Smith, product strategy lead for autonomous vehicles at Mapbox, a navigation startup, envisions a possible future in which your windshield could display the nearest parking garage, then tell you how many spots are open, how much it costs and whether there's a good coffee shop nearby. You might someday navigate indoors--where GPS doesn't work--using AR maps, with Google Translate instantly turning every sign you pass into your own language.
  • Website Uses AI to Generate the Faces of People Who Don't Exist - Will the real-life version of Skynet model its Terminators after real people? That's up in the air, as currently existing AI is already capable of crafting convincing faces all on its own. • Researchers, scared by their own work, hold back 'deepfakes for - OpenAI, a non-profit research company investigating "the path to safe artificial intelligence," has developed a machine learning system called Generative Pre-trained Transformer-2 (GPT-2 ), capable of generating text based on brief writing prompts. The result comes so close to mimicking human writing that it could potentially be used for "deepfake" content. Built based on 40 gigabytes of text retrieved from sources on the Internet (including "all outbound links from Reddit, a social media platform, which received at least 3 karma"), GPT-2 generates plausible "news" stories and other text that match the style and content of a brief text prompt. The performance of the system was so disconcerting, now the researchers are only releasing a reduced version of GPT-2 based on a much smaller text corpus.
  • Hackers destroy all of VFEmail's US customers' data - Unknown intruders have breached servers of US-based email provider VFEmail.net and destroyed all the data of its US customers in what the company has described as a "catastrophic destruction". According to VFEmail, hackers did not demand a ransom, nor attempt to steal users' confidential data, so the motive behind the damage would appear to be sabatage, although the reason is unclear at the moment. The attack occurred on 11th February and was detected after VFEmail's website and webmail client went down all of a sudden. Later, VFEmail posted a message on Twitter stating that its external-facing systems across multiple data centres had gone offline. After about two hours, the company revealed that its backup server had been formatted by an unknown attacker. The damage, Romero reported, extended to VFEmail's "entire infrastructure," including mail hosts, virtual machine hosts, and a SQL server cluster.

  • The Samsung Galaxy S10 is coming! Here's what to expect - Samsung's mainline flagships, the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, will still clearly share plenty of design DNA with the Galaxy S8, S9, Note8, and Note9 from the past two years. This year though, the devices are going to be leading the way in the mobile industry with a lot of "firsts" (or at least, "among the firsts"). In the US, the Galaxy S10 will be one of the first phones with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. It'll be one of the first phones with a hole-punch camera cutout instead of a notch. This will be our first look at Qualcomm's ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint reader, and it will be one of the first devices with Wi-Fi 6 compatibility. Metro: Exodus RTX Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 10:13 PM CET - Feb,15 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Metro: Exodus RTX benchmarks are now here. In this one, we benchmark RTX on the 2080 Ti, 2080, 2070, and 2060, along with tests of built-in benchmarks vs. gameplay. This testing looks at Metro: Exodus with RTX in various states -- on/off, high/ultra -- and also looks at non-RTX graphics scaling in the game. Our benchmarks show the change in performance from low to extreme settings, for DX11 vs. DX12, and more. Interestingly, the usability of the built-in benchmark is one of the more philosophical topics in the content, as we talk about when it would be (or wouldn't be) a useful tool for performance testing.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.2.2 Beta Drivers - tech
(hx) 03:43 PM CET - Feb,14 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD today made available the latest version of their Radeon software drivers, Adrenalin Edition 19.2.2, for supported graphics solutions. This brings with it support for the recently released Radeon VII graphics card, in addition to equally new and upcoming game titles including Metro Exodus, Far Cry New Dawn, the Civ VI: Gathering Storm expansion, and Crackdown 3. More pleasing to many users no doubt will be the large list of fixed issues, including a timely Alt + Tab shortcut on a DisplayPort monitor and plenty of bug fixes related to Radeon Wattman as it pertains to the Radeon VII. The drivers are up for download at the link below, hosted directly on TechPowerUp for your convenience, and the full change log is available past the break for those interested.
Fixed issues include: Using the Alt+Tab shortcut out of a fullscreen application or game may be slow or take longer than expected when using a display connected by DisplayPort. Apply and Discard buttons may not appear in some areas of Radeon Overlay under the Radeon WattMan overclocking tab. Radeon WattMan may fail to apply memory clock changes on AMD Radeon VII. AMD Radeon VII may intermittently experience a system hang when attempting to perform a timeout detection and recovery on Windows7 system configurations. Radeon WattMan may display the incorrect max fan/temperature values for AMD Radeon VII. Radeon WattMan may experience issues with changed values failing to save or load when multiple changes are applied at once. AMD Radeon VII may experience intermittent system stability issues on some X399 motherboards. Player Unknown's Battlegrounds may intermittently experience an application crash when changing post-processing settings. Radeon Settings may experience an application hang when loading the performance histogram in a game profile through game manager. Update Notifications may sometimes incorrectly list the currently installed driver as an available upgrade. Apex Legends may intermittently experience line corruption on AMD Radeon VII.
NVIDIA GeForce 418.91 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 12:38 AM CET - Feb,14 2019 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the latest version of GeForce desktop software. Version 418.91 WHQL adds day-one optimization for "Metro Exodus," including the game's RTX support. It also adds support for DLSS in both "Battlefield V" and "Metro Exodus." This last part is crucial because DLSS requires a lot of pre-processed "ground truth" data from NVIDIA to work, which are shipped in driver updates like these. The drivers also fix a wide range of issues related to G-SYNC, "Apex Legends," display corruption on "Hitman 2," and "ARK Survival."

Though it's hard to compare with other bundles since these change all the time, it's a good one AMD is offering at launch.
  • Radeon VII Priced 739 euro in the EU, France and Spain Only Have Dozens of Cards - Hot on the heels of our earlier report of there being just 100 Radeon VII graphics cards in stock to sell in the UK, we're hearing from French tech publication Cowcotland of an even worse situation in the Old Continent. Apparently, there are only 20 cards allocated to France and Spain, each. The price Cowcotland reports for the card is 739€ (including VAT), although paucity of cards could allow retailers to price the card just about anything, if there is demand for them. AMD has not given retailers in Europe inventory replenishment dates. Factories in China are down for the Lunar New Year holiday there, and depending on demand, another production run could be underway only by mid-thru-Late February, with fresh stocks reaching Europe only a month after.

  • NVIDIA Lied about Its Cryptocurrency Earnings to Avoid Stock Crash - In its recent earnings report, NVIDIA says it generated around $602 million in crypto-related sales. Not so, says Royal Bank of Canada capital market analyst Mitch Steves, who did some math and claims the actual number is closer to $1.95 billion. While the figure isn't something he can definitively prove, AMD's earnings report lends credence to the theory ($234M/25% vs. NVIDIA's hypothetical $1.95B/75%, with total crypto revenue being $2.75B). Some presume NVIDIA is concealing revenue in a desperate attempt to smooth over their stock troubles.
  • Major Shareholder Abandons Nvidia After Disappointing Year - In a report via PCGamesN, Japanese Investment company Softbank has officially sold off their entire stock in the company. An investor who was believed to be the graphics card giants 4th largest private investor. It should be noted, for the sake of fairness, that the company had been for well over a year scaling back their investment in Nvidia. With the recent downturn in the company though, and the significant hit to the share price, Softbank is believed to have lost around £2.7bn. To put the share price drop into context we would need to give you some figures. The current Nvidia share price is around $155. In late 2017, however, this was around $290. With a near 50% drop in around 12-months is pretty shocking by any standard.
  • Microsoft Makes Final Push to Rid World of Internet Explorer 10 - Microsoft is attempting to terminate Internet Explorer 10 by January 2020. "After this, we will not release any security or non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content changes for IE10." Users are advised to switch to IE11, which will be available for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard for the first time later this year. Microsoft assures customers that IE10 will continue to get updates through the Windows Update Catalog and WSUS as a 'Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 10'. The browser will also continue to get updates in the Monthly Rollup. Microsoft also notes that IE11 for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard will only be available in the 'classic' desktop IE experience, meaning the tiled experience will not be supported for these versions of Windows.
  • Firefox 66 to Block Audible Sound from Autoplay Video&Audio - Mozilla has announced that Firefox 66 will automatically block audible audio and video initiated by autoplay media on websites. As this is the default behavior for Firefox 66, users will have to interact with the website to initiate the audio such as hitting the "Play" button. Firefox users will be able to override this behavior by clicking on an icon in the URL bar and changing the settings for individual websites. Firefox for Android will incorporate the same behavior as the desktop version. Firefox 66 has a scheduled release date of March 19, 2019.

According to Google Project Zero team lead, Ben Hawkes, "CVE-2019-7286 and CVE-2019-7287 were exploited in the wild as 0day." CVE-2019-7286 allowed hackers to gain elevated privileges by using a malicious app to exploit a memory corruption bug. CVE-2019-7287 allowed a malicious app to exploit a memory corruption bug to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple credited multiple Google members for reporting the exploits.
  • Phones with 1TB Storage Coming Thanks to New Samsung Chip - Samsung has a new storage chip for phones that can hold twice as much data in the same space as last year's chip, and enables faster data access. The new embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 2.1 chip can store 1 TB (1,000 GB) of data, in the same size as Samsung's 512 GB eUFS chip introduced in late 2017. 1 TB is enough for over 43 hours of 4K video. The new chip is also up to 38% faster at reading data, and up to 25% faster at writing, compared to Samsung's 512 GB chip. eUFS chips provide internal storage for phones, which is distinct from RAM and removable memory cards. If the past is any indication, Samsung will likely use the chip in its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S 10, which is slated to be announced on February 20th.
  • Hands On with the Moto g7 Series - Moto's new g-series phones bring up-to-date features, upgraded specs, and clean Google software to three models ranging from $200 to $300. This year's series moves to a notched-screen design, steps up to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor, and supports USB-C across the board. They will all launch with Android 9 (Pie). All three will eventually come to US carriers, most by this spring.
  • iPhone XR And iPhone XS Chinese Sales Soar After Apple Slashes - Apple has had a particularly hard road in China where its high-prices are sending consumers to Chinese brands like Huawei and Xiaomi, but Apple is not lying down in the Chinese market without a fight. The company has slashed the price of iPhone models in China, and unsurprisingly, sales have grown for the device. Reports indicate that after Apple cut the price on the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and on several older iPhones, sales are up. Price cuts landed for third-party distributors in China on January 10. Price cuts allowed Chinese vendors to save on the purchase price from Apple, and lower the prices they are offering consumers. Not long after Apple dropped the prices, the iPhone XR was on sale online in China for 6099 yuan, which is about $899. Apple sells the iPhone XR directly in China via its stores for $958. Data sourced from Alibaba alleges that since the price cuts were made, sales on its website have increased 76%; other online sites are reporting similar sales booms after price cuts. Suning, for example, claims that since Apple cut prices, its sales have grown by 83%. The price cuts were in response to slowing iPhone sales in China, which is a crucial market for vendors as much of the rest of the world is seeing smartphone sales decline. Apple CEO Tim Cook had stated previously that the company was returning to prices similar to last year in some international markets to boost sales; it appears the tactic has worked in China.
  • Google Nukes 29 Malicious Android Apps - Google has removed over two dozen malicious Android apps from the Play Store that were collectively downloaded millions of times. The apps, which went to great lengths to appear legitimate, sent users pornographic content, redirected them to phishing websites, and collected photos under the guise of applying filters to them. The three most downloaded of the bunch were camera apps, and specifically Pro Camera Beauty, Cartoon Art Photo, and Emoji Camera. Each one notched over 1 million downloads. Several others were downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, such as Artistic Effect Filter, which racked up over half a million downloads.
  • Nutaku Announces World's First Boob-Shaped Console for Adult Gaming - Adult gaming platform Nutaku, best known for its vast library of hentai titles, has released its first piece of hardware: a breast-shaped, plug-and-play game console featuring more than 200 free-to-play and premium adult games. It's already sold out, but perverts waiting on new stock can check out a making-of video in the meantime, which explains how the company made a console with a "flesh-like feel" and "nipple-shaped power button.". Turning on the console is pretty straight-forward. You just got to press the nipple. The "boob" is created out of silicone to give it an authentic feel when touched. But it's pretty cool because it comes with two USB ports, one HDMI port, an audio jack and a wireless internet connection. Certainly the perfect console for those who love adult gaming. Priced at US$169, the console comes in limited quantities.
  • The Factory Flawed Air Jordans Worth $143,000 - Andrea Canziani has the sole pair of a factory defected Nike Air Jordan 1. The defect? An upside down swoosh on the left sneaker. The price tag: nearly $150,000. An error that would seem trivial to most has become a phenomenon in the sneaker world.
  • Toyota Finally Embraces Android Auto and CarPlay - After holding out longer than most auto makers, Toyota's new 2020 lineup includes, for the first time, a variety of models that support both Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto. The new models include the 2020 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra. Last year's Avalon supported CarPlay, but not Android Auto. The two technologies are comparable, letting the driver sync their phone to the car and display an interface on the dash touchscreen that's driven by the phone, and includes voice control. The interfaces are tailored to driving, with a focus on navigation, music, and basic communication. Other car companies already supporting both CarPlay and Android Auto are: Chrysler (and Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram), Ford (and Lincoln), GM (Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, GMC), Honda (and Acura), Hyundai (and Kia), Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, VW (and Audi), and Volvo.
  • Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - Official Trailer [HD] - After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America's Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015's Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they've tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever - and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown's Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw's sister - these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

GeForce RTX Gaming Laptops - tech
(hx) 04:21 PM CET - Jan,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (3)
Nvidia RTX-equipped gaming laptops are out, and both Nvidia and their retail partners are heavily promoting them. But before you jump on one, remember that Nvidia (and AMD) have a long-running habit of using somewhat deceptive branding for their laptop GPUs. As TechSpot points out, the mobile RTX 2080, 2070, and 2060 are not necessarily equivalent to their desktop counterparts.

  • Testing Intel Whiskey Lake CPUs: Core i7-8565U Review - Intel unveiled a new series of U-series laptop processors last year designed for ultraportables. These CPUs are codenamed Whiskey Lake, and they're still 8th-gen parts that are not radically different from Kaby Lake Refresh. The focus of this review will be the Core i7-8565U, which is essentially the new flagship 15W CPU in Intel's line-up.
  • Triple RAID - Max Performance Or Max Headache??? - WD sent us 3 of their new Black SN750 NVME drives so we wanted to see what kind of crazy speeds we could get with them when put into RAID 0. Sadly it didn't go exactly as planned, but we were still able to get some results that are more than fast enough. Also let us know in the comments section if you'd like to see us explore this even further.
  • AdoredTV: Comprehending the Navi No-Show - Having received criticism for leaks that weren't entirely accurate, AdoredTV's Jim Parker has returned with a new video that attempts to explain what went wrong and why Navi was a no-show. While critics are calling this another round of damage control, AMD hopefuls say that a leak doesn't have to be 100% accurate to be "right."
  • Follow Up: More Epyc 7551P Testing & Your Questions Answered - Wendell of Level1Techs explains, "NUMA is only really meant to make things better from a program performance perspective. It's not worse. And Linux is well engineered enough that in Ubuntu, NUMA on the 2990WX is squeezing all of the performance out of the platform; out of everything that it possibly can. And you have to concede that Windows and uniform memory access (UMA) mode is basically fine. So its not just the Windows bloatedness and overhead. Its not just differences in the Windows platform. I think that's sort of the final nail on the whole NUMA versus uniform memory access (UMA). And its also not being a hardware thing."

  • LG 34GK950F Curved Gaming Monitor Review: 144Hz Ultrawide With HDR - LG's new 34GK950F combines many desirable features into a single display. An IPS panel runs at a 144Hz refresh rate without overclock while delivering FreeSync 2, HDR10 and extended color covering over 90 percent of DCI-P3. LG even throws in blur reduction, which isn't often seen in FreeSync monitors. This is all wrapped in a stylish chassis with an ideal 1900R curvature with QHD resolution (3440x1440) and a pixel density of 109ppi. At around $1,000 (£990), it isn’t cheap but offers more features than many similarly priced screens, including its predecessor, the LG 34WK650
  • Google Pixel Slate Review: Premium, But Pricey - Regardless of how good the hardware is (and it’s mostly good), a $1,000-plus Chrome convertible is a long, long way from the Chromebook’s affordable beginnings. And while you certainly can do more with Chrome OS today than you could even two years ago, the operating system still feels like a work in progress, and plenty of Android apps still don’t look great on this good-looking hardware.
  • Windows Lite will reportedly feature a new Start Menu - Windows Lite is Microsoft’s ChromeOS competitor, which is expected to run a user interface called Webshell and which will not look like Windows 10, and also not be able to be upgraded to Windows 10.  It will still be able to run Windows apps, but only those downloaded from the Store. Today we have heard one of the ways Windows Lite will be different from Windows 10 is that it will drop Live Tiles, which does make sense as, again according to the WC, this is a very underused Windows 10 feature, both by users and developers.
  • Windows 10 Mobile Is Officially Dead - Microsoft has officially signed the death certificate for Windows 10 mobile as it recently posted a "Windows 10 Mobile End of Support: FAQ." On December 10, 2019, "Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free." Microsoft has a suggestion for users of Windows 10 mobile; "move to a supported Android or iOS device."
  • HoloLens news incoming - Microsoft began sending out invitations for its press event at Mobile World Congress today, which will be held on Sunday, February 24 at 5pm CET. Speakers at the keynote will include CEO Satya Nadella, CVP Julia White, and Alex Kipman. Alex Kipman is known for his work on HoloLens, and HoloLens news is exactly what we were expecting. Sources told us that MWC is when it will be officially unveiled that the next HoloLens will use a Snapdragon 850 chipset, making it an always connected PC. It seems likely that we'll get even more details on Microsoft's next-generation AR headset, and a full unveil would be particularly interesting. Don't expect any new Surface hardware, as Panos Panay's name wasn't on the list. It's possible that the firm could show off some partner devices, but that's somewhat unlikely given that this is a pre-event show. For example, at CES, Microsoft did a partner showcase a couple of days into the event, after partners had announced their new wares. Aside from HoloLens and the various business applications that will come from features like 4G LTE, there may be some Azure news as well, since Julia White will be there. We'll find out more on February 24.
  • 15-inch, 4K OLED laptops are coming - Larger OLED laptop screens are coming sooner than we anticipated. Samsung Displays announced that it has made a 15.6-inch 4K laptop display and will begin producing the panels next month. The company plans on providing them to other manufacturers to put into their premium notebooks. Samsung's 15.6-inch display has a brightness range of 0.0005 to 600 nits, and its spectrum of 34 million colors is double that of similar, 15-inch LCD panels. Samsung claims that its panel can produce blacks that are 200 times darker than those of LCD panels, and whites will be more than twice as bright. These attributes contribute to the HDR capabilities of the panel, and the company claims that the panel passes VESA's new DisplayHDR TrueBlack standard. While OLED panels provide better contrast ratios, color gamut, and brightness levels than most LCD panels, they're also more expensive to produce. Lots of manufacturers have skipped OLED panels for their premium laptops because they cost more to put into the device, thereby driving up the retail price for consumers. Also, OLED screens have burn-in problems that some consumers don't want to deal with neither in their smartphones nor in their laptops. Regardless, Samsung's announcement will be exciting for those who have been itching for larger, higher-resolution OLED panels in the newest laptops. It's unclear which manufacturers will be the first to get Samsung's OLED panels, but plenty of OEMs including HP, Lenovo, and Dell have laptops with OLED screens slated for launch this year.

Apple started a relatively affordable program to replace batteries in older iPhones for $29, and some analysts thought the program could put a dent in Apple's profits. That claim hinges on just how many batteries Apple replaced, and the Daring Fireball blog claims to have a concrete number. Citing an Apple executive meeting on January 3rd, the report claims that Apple replaced about 11 million iPhone batteries, which is far above previous estimates.

  • Next RAZR Might be a $1,500 Foldable Smartphone - Motorola will soon revive the RAZR brand for a pricey folding-screen phone for Verizon, the Wall Street Journal reports today. The phone is in testing but could launch as soon as February. The phone would cost roughly $1,500 and be exclusive to Verizon Wireless. Samsung has said it also plans to introduce a phone this year with a screen that bends, allowing the phone to fold in half. Motorola Mobility is owned by Lenovo. The original RAZR was a thin metal flip phone introduced in 2004. Motorola revived the RAZR brand in 2011 for a line of Droid phones that were also exclusive to Verizon. The new "foldable" RAZR has yet to be announced and no other details are available.
  • Nokia Phones Return to US Carriers -  Nokia phones are back on US carrier store shelves as of today. The Nokia 3.1 Plus goes on sale today with Cricket, and Verizon will start selling the Nokia 2 V on January 31st. The announcement was made today by HMD Global, the independent company formed by ex-Nokia employees when Nokia stopped making its own phones. HMD licenses and has exclusive use of the Nokia brand for phones. The company plans additional phones for US carriers this year. "Our approach to operator relationships is not transactional - our users will see more devices at different price points launching with our prepaid and post-paid wireless prover [sic] partners and on the open market", said Maurizio Angelone, Vice President Americas for HMD Global. The Nokia 3.1 Plus has a tall (2:1) 6-inch HD screen, 3,500 mAh battery, fingerprint reader, NFC, and Snapdragon 439 processor with 2 GB RAM. It has dual rear cameras including a 13 megapixel main sensor. It sells for $160 from Cricket. The Nokia 2 V has a huge 4,000 mAh battery for "two-day battery life". It also has a 5.5-inch HD display, Snapdragon 425 processor, 8 megapixel main camera, and 8 GB storage plus a memory card slot. Pricing was not announced for the 2 V.
  • Target, Taco Bell Finally Accepting NFC Payments - Apple Pay and Google Pay are closer to being accepted everywhere, with the announcement that Target, Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, Hy-Vee and Speedway are now rolling out support for NFC payments. Target was one of the last big holdouts in supporting the technology, which lets you simply tap your NFC-equipped phone or smartwatch on the card terminal to pay. Target expects its rollout to all 1,850 locations across the US to be complete in the "coming weeks". Taco Bell and Jack in the Box expect to finish their rollout in the "next few months". Previous holdouts CVS, 7-Eleven, and Costco launched support for NFC payments last year.
  • YouTube Bans Dangerous Challenges and Pranks Videos - YouTube has rolled out new Community Guidelines that will ban videos that depict dangerous challenges and pranks. Examples of dangerous challenges and pranks include, setting yourself on fire, eating Tide Pods, driving blindfolded, shooting a loved one for views, home invasion pranks, drive-by shooting pranks, and pranks that cause children severe emotional distress.
  • New Bluetooth Sticker Tags Powered by Ambient Radio Waves - A new design for Bluetooth LE tags removes the need for a battery and fits into a cheap, thin, stamp-size sticker, or can be embedded directly in consumer product packaging. A tiny ARM processor transmits an ecrypted ID code like other Bluetooth tracking tags, but is powered by a new antenna design that harvests power from ambient radio waves. It can also sense temperature and weight info, and transmit that data, as well, to nearby Bluetooth LE devices, including phones. The tags have been created and successfully demonstrated by Wiliot, which has secured $50 million in funding from eight major investors, including the investment arms of Samsung, Qualcomm, and Amazon. Wiliot expects manufacturers to embed its tag into products and product packaging, which consumers could interact with, both in stores and at home, to get additional product information on their phones, or track lost items.
  • First-Ever 2020 Toyota Supra Sells for a Whopping $2.1 Million - That's almost double what the first 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 pulled at the same venue, 42 times the 2020 Supra's starting MSRP of $49,990, and over 17 times more than what that pristine 1994 version sold for on Bring a Trailer a couple weeks ago. The car is finished in matte gray with matte black wheels and, to make it really stand out at Cars and Coffee, gloss red wing mirrors. To continue the racer-boy theme, the interior is red with carbon fiber inserts.

  • Most Customers Would Stop Watching Netflix if it had Commercials - Netflix reportedly tested video ads for other series earlier this year, and those tests didn't go well. The company has no public plans to implement video ads anytime soon, and a recent survey conducted by the market research firm Audience Project seems to justify Netflix's reluctance. After asserting that Netflix is the leading streaming in the US and several European countries, the research firm claims that over half of Netflix's users would stop watching content if the streaming platform introduced commercials. In the U.S, 42% said they would still stop watching if a price drop accompanied the commercials.
  • Resident Evil Heading to Netflix - According to sources close to Deadline, a Resident Evil TV series is in the works for Netflix. Just like the Resident Evil movie series, it is reportedly under development by Constantin Films. The movie series is currently getting a reboot of its own, also produced by the same German company. This time, they are hiring British director Johanes Roberts to replace Paul W.S. Anderson. Although quite successful and earning over a billion dollars worldwide, Anderson's film series are a significant departure from the original CAPCOM video game series. So fans are naturally hoping that this time around it would actually resemble the video game closely
  • Star Wars Theory Prevails after Disney Claims Copyright on Vader - Disney and their partner company Warner Chappell had claimed that because the custom score used in the film used a rendition of the Imperial March score, then it was in violation of their copyright policy. They used this copyright to claim that the entire film was now their intellectual property and were now going to run ads on it and collect the revenue themselves. Theory was given the option to appeal it, which he stated he was not going to do because he would likely lose and then Disney would delete the film and possibly get his channel taken down.

The AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.1.2 driver has been released and it adds support for Resident Evil 2, Tropico 6, and Anthem Early Access. AMD Radeon RX 580 owners should see a 7% uplift in performance over the Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 19.1.1 driver at 1920x1080 (1080p). Issues fixed in this release include: Some displays may experience a black screen on reboot until the display is power cycled. A toast message may intermittently popup incorrectly suggesting that a new driver upgrade is available. Rocket League may experience flickering or erratic refresh rates when Radeon FreeSync is enabled. Custom installations of Radeon Software may sometimes fail to install Radeon Settings. Radeon Settings may experience an application crash when Upgrade Advisor is refreshed by the user multiple times. Users may not be able to upgrade to an optional driver if the latest recommended driver was installed by AMD Link.

GeForce GTX1660Ti Will Launch on Feb 15 at $279 - tech
(hx) 02:42 PM CET - Jan,24 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to HardOCP, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti will launch on February 15, with an MSRP of $279. The GTX 1660 will launch in early March at $229, while the GTX 1650 will go on sale for $179 in late March. Additionally, Nvidia will continue to supply the 1050 Ti to retailers, and its price will drop to keep it competitive. The exact launch prices are still in flux, and any performance figures that show up on the web need to be taken with a grain of salt until independent testers like us get the cards in our labs. But if Nvidia's RTX lineup is too pricey for you, and if you're having trouble finding GTX 10 series cards in stock at major retailers, some cheaper alternatives from Nvidia should be here soon.

GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is 16% Faster Than GTX 1060 - tech
(hx) 06:33 PM CET - Jan,22 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
Thai PC enthusiast TUM Apisak posted a screenshot of an alleged GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Ashes of the Singularity (AoTS) benchmark. The GTX 1660 Ti, if you'll recall, is an upcoming graphics card based on the TU116 silicon, which is a derivative of the "Turing" architecture but with a lack of real-time raytracing capabilities. Tested on a machine powered by an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, the AoTS benchmark was set to run at 1080p and DirectX 11. At this resolution, the GTX 1660 Ti returned a score of 7,400 points, which roughly compares with the previous-generation GTX 1070, and is about 16-17 percent faster than the GTX 1060 6 GB. NVIDIA is expected to launch the GTX 1660 Ti some time in Spring-Summer, 2019, as a sub-$300 successor to the GTX 1060 series.

How Well Do FreeSync Monitors Work with NVIDIA GPUs? - tech
(hx) 11:48 AM CET - Jan,17 2019 - Post a comment
Techspot has performed testing on FreeSync monitors and NVIDIA GPUs to determine how well do they work together. After explaining the 4 tiers of adaptive sync support that NVIDIA has, Techspot ended up testing 7 different monitors that didn't have NVIDIA certification. All worked except for one monitor that required FreeSync over HDMI. NVIDIA currently doesn't support FreeSync over HDMI as it has tied its G-SYNC technology to Displayport only. Owners of high end FreeSync televisions are left out in the cold for now as most TVs only have HDMI connections. Everything worked perfectly fine and without issues just as they predicted. NVIDIA even supports low framerate compensation (LFC) and HDR with adaptive sync support on FreeSync monitors. They haven't tested the exclusive FreeSync 2 AMD features on NVIDIA GPUs, but they expect the basic FreeSync and HDR on those to work just fine also.

Check Point Finds Fortnite Login Vulnerability - tech
(hx) 06:42 PM CET - Jan,16 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Security experts from Check Point Research claim they found a bug in Fortnite's login system that allowed potential attackers to hijack accounts. Unlike the thousands of Fortnite scams that already exist online, this hack allegedly didn't require entering any login credentials or financial info. According to the researchers' technical writeup, the exploit used existing authentication tokens tied to other accounts and a vulnerability related to old Epic Games domains. Once logged in, the attacker could buy V-Bucks, listen in on chat, and presumably mess with Fortnite accounts in other ways. Fortunately, CPR says that "a fix was responsibly deployed" after informing Epic Games.

The code opens a window and makes an oAuth request to the SSO provider server (in our case, Facebook) with all user cookies and the crafted "state" parameter. Facebook then responds with a redirection to "account.epicgames.com" which contains the SSO token ("code" parameter) and the crafted "state" parameter that was previously affected by the attacker. As the user has already logged on with his Facebook account, the server "account.epicgames.com" makes a redirection to the URL that is found within the crafted "state" parameter. In our case, the redirection goes to "ut2004stats.epicgames.com" with the XSS payload and the Facebook user oAuth token. Finally, the token is then extracted from the request and sent to the attackers' server (for POC purposes we used "ngrok" server - 0aa62240.ngrok.io). The attacker now has the users' Facebook token and can make a login to the victims' account.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 417.71 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 05:57 PM CET - Jan,15 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA today released its latest version of GeForce software. Version 417.71 WHQL is the first public driver to add support for the new GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card. More importantly, it makes good on CEO Jen-Hsun Huang's promise to make NVIDIA GPUs, "Pascal" and "Turing," compatible with VESA Adaptive-Sync (AMD FreeSync) monitors. NVIDIA maintains this repository of monitors it has tested to support Adaptive Sync, although any compatible monitor meeting the cable requirements can be made to run G-Sync. The only feature only supports single-displays for now, and NVIDIA plans to add multi-display Adaptive-Sync support later.

NVIDIA also addressed a number of issues. To begin with, it fixed the problem of the GeForce GTX 1080 not dropping down GPU clock-speed to idle when three displays are connected. Also addressed is a black-screen noticed on monitors connected via DisplayPort, when resuming from S3 sleep. Also fixed is black screen noticed on BenQ XL2730 when the refresh-rate is set to the monitor's advertised 144 Hz. A Windows 7-specific error in which game frame-rates drop when both G-Sync and the in-game V-sync are enabled. Multiple apps throw up artifacts on Windows RS5 when resolution is changed, on machines with RTX 2080, which NVIDIA fixed with this release. An occasional crash on "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" with the game running in DirectX 12 mode was fixed.
