Microsoft Admits Updates Are Freezing Windows 10 Computers - tech
(hx) 12:48 AM CEST - May,20 2019 - Post a comment / read (7)
Last month I reported how the April Windows 10 "Patch Tuesday" updates were freezing some computers during the update process itself and preventing others from rebooting afterwards. Now it appears that the latest operating system updates are once again preventing Windows 10 computers from rebooting properly. The previous issue only involved users running certain antivirus solutions, but this time it's anyone. Or at least anyone who wants to restore their computer back to a point before the latest Windows 10 update was installed. Which is, let's face it, a pretty common scenario considering the problematical nature of the update process. Bleeping Computer was first to spot that Microsoft had updated a support document regarding system restore reboot problems. As long as you have system protection turned on in Windows 10 and have created a system restore point before applying the latest update, then you are at risk of being frozen out of your computer. Simple as. Microsoft confirms that under those circumstances the computer may experience "a Stop error (0xc000021a)" and when you restart the device "the system cannot return to the Windows desktop." In other words, your computer is borked in a failed reboot scenario caused by the Windows 10 update that is meant to protect your system from potential harm.

How do you fix it? Restart the computer and enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) which should happen automatically after two consecutive failed attempts to start Windows 10. From the WinRE screen, select "Troubleshoot|Advanced options|More recovery options|Startup settings" and then the "Restart now" option. A number of startup settings will be available and you need to ensure you have selected "Disable driver signature enforcement." Microsoft advises that the F7 key may need to be employed in order to select this setting. The startup process will now proceed and system restore should resume and complete as intended.

Intel Tried to Bribe Dutch University to Suppress Knowledge of MDS Vulnerability - tech
(hx) 03:30 PM CEST - May,16 2019 - Post a comment / read (3)
Cybersecurity researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, also known as VU Amsterdam, allege that Intel tried to bribe them to suppress knowledge of the latest processor security vulnerability RIDL (rouge in-flight data load), which the company made public on May 14. Dutch publication Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant reports that Intel offered to pay the researchers a USD $40,000 "reward" to allegedly get them to downplay the severity of the vulnerability, and backed their offer with an additional $80,000. The team politely refused both offers. Intel's security vulnerability bounty program is shrouded in CYA agreements designed to minimize Intel's losses from the discovery of a new vulnerability. Under its terms, once a discoverer accepts the bounty reward, they enter into a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) with Intel, to not disclose their findings or communicate in the regard with any other person or entity than with certain authorized people at Intel. With public knowledge withheld, Intel can work on mitigation and patches against the vulnerability. Intel argues that information of vulnerabilities becoming public before it's had a chance to address them would give the bad guys time to design and spread malware that exploits the vulnerability. This is an argument the people at VU weren't willing to buy, and thus Intel is forced to disclose RIDL even as microcode updates, software updates, and patched hardware are only beginning to come out.

Remote Code Execution security vulnerability affecting Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 06:08 PM CEST - May,15 2019 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft is warning that the Internet could see another exploit with the magnitude of the WannaCry attack that shut down computers all over the world two years ago unless people patch a high-severity vulnerability. The software maker took the unusual step of backporting the just-released patch for Windows 2003 and XP, which haven't been supported in four and five years, respectively. "This vulnerability is pre-authentication and requires no user interaction," Simon Pope, director of incident response at the Microsoft Security Response Center, wrote in a published post that coincided with the company's May Update Tuesday release. "In other words, the vulnerability is wormable, meaning that any future malware that exploits this vulnerability could propagate from vulnerable computer to vulnerable computer in a similar way as the WannaCry malware spread across the globe in 2017. While we have observed no exploitation of this vulnerability, it is highly likely that malicious actors will write an exploit for this vulnerability and incorporate it into their malware."

As if a self-replicating, code-execution vulnerability wasn't serious enough, CVE-2017-0708 (as the flaw in Windows Remote Desktop Services is indexed) requires low complexity to exploit. Microsoft's Common Vulnerability Scoring System Calculator scores that complexity as 3.9 out of 10. (To be clear, the WannaCry developers had potent exploit code written by, and later stolen from, the National Security Agency, to exploit the wormable CVE-2017-0144 and CVE-2017-0145 flaws, which had exploit complexities rated as "high.") Ultimately, though, developing reliable exploit code for this latest Windows vulnerability will require relatively little work.

Bartholomew said network firewalls and other defenses that block the RDP service would effectively stop the attack from happening. But as the world learned during the WannaCry attacks, those measures often fail to contain damage that can collectively cost billions of dollars. Independent researcher Kevin Beaumont, citing queries on the Shodan search engine of Internet-connected computers, said here that about 3 million RDP endpoints are directly exposed.

Besides Windows 2003 and XP, CVE-2019-0708 also affects Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008. In a testament to Microsoft's steadily improving security, later versions of Windows aren't at risk.

Microsoft: The open source company - tech
(hx) 10:24 PM CEST - May,11 2019 - Post a comment
The news from Microsoft's Build developer conference that surprised me most was that Microsoft will ship a genuine Linux kernel—GPLed, with all patches published—with Windows. That announcement was made with the announcement of Windows Terminal, a new front-end for command-line programs on Windows that will, among other things, support tabs. Microsoft's increased involvement with open source software isn't new, as projects such as Visual Studio Code and the .NET runtime have operated as open source, community-driven projects. But this week's announcements felt a bit different.
The Linux kernel will be powering Microsoft's second generation Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The first generation WSL contains a partial re-implementation of the Linux kernel API that uses the Windows NT kernel to perform its functionality. In choosing this approach, Microsoft avoided using any actual Linux code, and hence the company avoided the GPL license with its "viral" stipulations that would have arguably forced Microsoft to open source WSL and perhaps even parts of Windows itself.

No less significant is the Windows Terminal project. Many Windows users will know that Windows' command-line programs depend on a process named conhost.exe that's responsible for drawing the command-line windows. As part of Windows Terminal, Microsoft has published the source to conhost.exe. This is an important (albeit uninteresting) part of Windows itself, and Microsoft has published it using the permissive MIT license. This is, I think, unprecedented. While Microsoft has open sourced Windows utilities such as Calculator, this represents the first time that the company has published core Windows code—and with an open source license to boot.

The Windows Terminal project is similarly permissively licensed. While it's branded an early alpha release at present, once it stabilizes and has a solid feature set, it's likely to be integrated into Windows itself and to ship as a standard Windows component. Just as with the publishing of conhost.exe, this too represents something of a first: a (new) core Windows component that's developed as open source.

Microsoft has changed. It's not the company it once was. Open source is no longer the enemy—it's now something that has a role across the entire company. And open source is not just for discrete, standalone applications; it's now a viable building block for core Windows features.

Mozilla releases Firefox 66.0.4 which re-enables user extensions - tech
(hx) 02:45 PM CEST - May,06 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Mozilla has finally released Firefox 66.0.4 which addresses a certificate issue which caused many Firefox users’ extensions to become disabled. The hiccup occurred on Friday, May 3rd and, as a result, many users flocked to forums such as Reddit to see just what was going on. For users on desktop, Mozilla was fairly quick to push a temporary fix via the Studies programme but this didn’t extend to the ESR or Android versions of the browser.
A Firefox release has been pushed — version 66.0.4 on Desktop and Android, and version 60.6.2 for ESR. This release repairs the certificate chain to re-enable web extensions, themes, search engines, and language packs that had been disabled. There are remaining issues that we are actively working to resolve, but we wanted to get this fix out before Monday to lessen the impact of disabled add-ons before the start of the week

While the new update fixes a ton of issues that users will have faced, it doesn’t solve them all. Some users may notice the following issues:

  • A small number of add-ons are listed as unsupported or may not appear in about:addons, the data isn’t lost and users should be able to re-install the add-ons and recover the data.
  • Add-ons that use container functionality may have lost site data or custom configurations and may need to be set up again.
  • Themes may not have automatically been re-enabled but users can re-enable them manually in about:addons.
  • Home page and search settings that were customised by an add-on may have been reset to default, requiring users to customise the settings again.

It’s not clear whether Mozilla plans to fix these issues in another point release or just wait for the next major release of the browser which is slated for May 14.

Firefox is having trust issues with add-ons - tech
(hx) 09:34 PM CEST - May,04 2019 - Post a comment / read (19)
According to an announcement on Mozilla Discourse, a certificate used to sign Firefox add-ons expired some hours ago and is causing new add-ons to fail to install and existing add-ons to stop working. As a result, users have reported on Reddit that they have been left without functioning add-ons such as content blockers, password managers, and download managers.

Mozilla is now rolling out a fix for the issue affecting add-ons to release, beta, and nightly users on desktop and should automatically be applied to Firefox in the next few hours. However, it relies upon remaining opted into "Studies" found in the Firefox preferences under Privacy & Security > FireFox Data Collection and Use and making sure that Allow Firefox to install and run studies is enabled in addition to Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla. These options can be disabled after the fix has been applied.

In the meantime, Mozilla is still working on a general fix that does not rely on the above configuration.

Windows 7 users won't let go of the aging OS - tech
(hx) 03:26 PM CEST - May,03 2019 - Post a comment / read (29)
Analytics company NetMarketShare’s latest figures show that while Windows 10’s market share continues to climb, it is doing so at a slower pace. It went from 43.62 percent in March to 44.10 percent in April. And while Windows 7 declined, it did so by just 0.09 percent—from 36.52 percent to 36.43 percent. It was only in December that Windows 10 finally surpassed Windows 7 to become the most popular version of the operating system. Surprisingly, the older OS experienced slight growth in February, but has been falling since then, though not as quickly as Microsoft wants. Windows 7 will no longer receive extended security updates on January 14, 2020. After this point, the only users to receive them will be business and education customers willing to pay the high prices. In an attempt to get more people to migrate to Windows 10, Microsoft started sending out courtesy reminders last month. These contain a link to pages that offer advice on how to prepare for Windows 7's last days and encourage people to upgrade to Windows 10 or buy a new PC.

Backblaze Releases Hard Drive Stats for Q1 2019 - tech
(hx) 12:01 AM CEST - May,02 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
At the end of Q1 2019, Backblaze was using 104,325 hard drives to store data. For our evaluation we remove from consideration those drives that were used for testing purposes and those drive models for which we did not have at least 45 drives (see why below). This leaves us with 104,130 hard drives. The table below covers what happened in Q1 2019. If a drive model has a failure rate of 0%, it means there were no drive failures of that model during Q1 2019. The two drives listed with zero failures in Q1 were the 4 TB and 5 TB Toshiba models. Neither has a large enough number of drive days to be statistically significant, but in the case of the 5 TB model, you have to go back to Q2 2016 to find the last drive failure we had of that model.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update Blocks Prior To Launch - tech
(hx) 12:34 PM CEST - May,01 2019 - Post a comment
Microsoft is likely just days away from publicly launching the next major release for Windows 10: Version 1903, aka, the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. Although Microsoft has been testing the May 2019 Update for months internally and externally – via the Windows Insider program – the company doesn’t want a repeat of what happened with the disastrous Windows 10 October 2018 Update. With that in mind, the company pushed the update out to the Release Preview ring much earlier than usual so that it could catch any last-minute bugs before going to a full-scale public release. The next step that the company has taken it to implement upgrade blocks for specific configurations that are known to have issues with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. By issuing these blocks, customers who otherwise would have been pushed the update will be spared the headaches of dealing with sometimes crippling bugs. Once Microsoft has pushed out fixes for these particular problems, the blocks will be lifted.
With this in mind, Microsoft has posted the following list of upgrade blocks that will be in place when the Windows 10 May 2019 hits the public next month:

    * If you have an external USB device or SD memory card is attached to your PC, you will be blocked from updating to the May 2019 Update. If you remove any external USB devices and/or SD memory cards, the update should proceed normally. This issue will be resolved in a future servicing update for Windows 10.
    * If you have older versions of anti-cheat software used with games installed on your PC, you will be blocked from updating to the May 2019 Update. Some older versions of anti-cheat software may cause PCs to experience crashes after updating to the May 2019 Update. This block is specific to older versions of anti-cheat software. We are working with partners on getting their software updated with a fix, and most games have released patches to prevent PCs from experiencing this issue. To minimize the chance of hitting this block, please make sure you are running the latest version of your games before attempting to update the operating system.
    * If you have redirected any Known Folders (for example: Desktop, Documents, Pictures), an empty folder with that same name is created in your %userprofile% directory when you update. Your Known Folders are redirected if you chose to back up your content to OneDrive using the OneDrive wizard, or if you chose to keep your content backed up during the Windows Out-of-box-Experience (OOBE). You may have also redirected your Known Folders manually through the Properties Dialog in File Explorer. ?This issue does not cause any user files to be deleted and a fix is in progress.

GeForce 430.39 driver causes High CPU usage - tech
    (hx) 10:27 PM CEST - Apr,29 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
A few days ago, NVIDIA released a brand new driver for its graphics cards. The GeForce 430.39 driver was optimized for Mortal Kombat 11, Anthem and Strange Brigade, however, it appears that it is also plagued by a really weird bug. According to numerous reports, this latest driver caused high CPU usage on a variety of PC system configurations. However, and contrary to other similar reports, NVIDIA has acknowledged this issue and stated that it is currently working on a fix.
Thank you. We have been able to reproduce the bug consistently now and are currently testing a fix.

Enable Google Chrome 74 Dark Mode In Windows 10 - tech
    (hx) 03:24 PM CEST - Apr,25 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
Google has now released Chrome 74 for Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, and Android users. The biggest thing in any of those releases is that Dark Mode has now landed for Windows users. If you want to turn on Dark Mode, you have to first change Windows 10 to use "dark" setting via the personalization tab, and then Chrome will automatically switch to Dark Mode with the OS. Next, you will need to enable Dark Mode in Chrome using the following steps:

Go to the shortcut icon that you use to that start Google Chrome.
Right-click the shortcut icon and click Properties.
Add --force-dark-mode at the end of the Target field.
    Click Apply, then OK.
    Start Google Chrome.

The other changes in Chrome 74 are for web developers, and some things have been removed in this version. One of the removed features is the deprecation of file downloads initiated from sandbox iframes. That was removed because it was a common method for malware distribution. Google also removed the ability of a webpage to open a new tab when the current page is being closed. Data Saver mode was replaced by Lite Mode on Android; that mode is only on Chrome for Android. Google's page offering all the details on changes for Chrome 74 can be found here.

    (hx) 10:54 AM CEST - Apr,24 2019 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released GeForce 430.39 WHQL drivers, which introduce support for the new GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card launched earlier today. The drivers also add support for the new notebook variants of the GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1660. Most importantly, the drivers add support for Windows 10 May 2019 Update (1903), which adds a standardized method of variable-rate shading. The drivers add or improve optimization for "Mortal Kombat XI," "Anthem," and "Strange Brigade." NVIDIA tested and approved 7 more VESA Adaptive Sync-capable monitors for G-Sync support added through these drivers. Among the other features is the new ability to merge two portrait monitors to a landscape display head. Fixes include MadVR not correctly rendering HDR mode using MPC-HC; a random desktop flicker seen in some multi-display PCs, and memory leaks noticed when launching certain games.

Happy Easter to all those who celebrate! :-)
    • The Western Digital WD Blue SN500 SSD Review: Moving The Mainstream To NVMe - The WD Blue SN500 may be a bit low-end by NVMe standards, but its performance specifications are still far above what SATA SSDs can provide. The SN500's write endurance rating of 0.3 DWPD over a 5-year warranty is standard for mainstream and many high-end SSDs. The current retail pricing is about 10-15% higher than the good deals on mainstream SATA SSDs of comparable capacity, so Western Digital is only charging a small premium for delivering NVMe performance
    • The latest Windows update breaks McAfee, Sophos, Avira, Avast (KB4493472) - Affected machines seem to be fine until an attempt is made to log in, at which point the system grinds to a halt. It's not immediately clear if systems are freezing altogether or just going extraordinarily slowly. Some users have reported that they can log in, but the process takes ten or more hours. Logging in to Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, and Server 2012 R2 are all affected.
    • Facebook Quietly Reveals That Millions of Instagram Passwords Were Exposed - Facebook originally said in March that up to 20,000 employees could have accessed the passwords of more than 600 million people. They wouldn't even have to do anything to make the data readable either because it was stored in plain text. The company essentially left keys to the digital lives of half a billion people lying around for any of its employees to use as they saw fit.  Then, on April 18 the company updated its March blog post with more information: "Since this post was published, we discovered additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a readable format. We now estimate that this issue impacted millions of Instagram users. We will be notifying these users as we did the others. Our investigation has determined that these stored passwords were not internally abused or improperly accessed." The company didn't say when it discovered that Instagram users were also affected; it could've been anytime between March 21 and April 18. Nor did Facebook mention the issue on social media, republish the blog post to make it clear that it was updated, or inform journalists of the change.

    • Samsung shares fall following reports of Galaxy Fold issues - Despite tech reviewers only having their Galaxy Folds for a few days, there have been several reports of them experiencing display problems, including a piece of debris getting under the screen and eventually causing it to break, and an instance where one side of the display started flickering white. In some cases, the damage was caused by users missing the warning label on the phone and removing the protective layer. Samsung only recently started taking pre-orders for the $1,890 phone.

    • AT&T Prepaid Promo Doubles the Data - AT&T has a new promotion offering double the data on its mid-range plan. For $40/month, customers get 16GB of high-speed data, instead of the usual 8GB. The plan also includes unlimited talk and text across North America. The promo requires that customers enroll in AutoPay (without AutoPay, the plan is $50/month and only includes the usual 8 GB of data.) The plan includes rollover, where unused data is available the following month. The promo works by adding a special 8 GB block of "bonus data" each month. That bonus data is used first, followed by the standard data allotment. The bonus data does not roll over. Therefore if a customer used 8 GB one month, they could have up to 24 GB of high-speed data available the following month (8 bonus + 8 standard + 8 rollover). The plan also includes HD video and mobile hotspot. The next plan up is the unlimited prepaid plan for $65/month ($55 with AutoPay), but that does not include HD video nor mobile hotspot. The double-data promo will be available until July 11th, but customers who sign up before then will continue to receive the double data as long as they stay on the plan and signed up for AutoPay

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Specs,Price - tech
    (hx) 12:09 AM CEST - Apr,18 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
NVIDIA is releasing its most affordable graphics card based on the Turing architecture, the GeForce GTX 1650, on the 23rd of April, starting at USD $149. There doesn't appear to be a reference-design (the GTX 1660 series lacked one, too), and so this GPU will be a partner-driven launch. Based on NVIDIA's smallest Turing silicon, the 12 nm TU117, the GTX 1650 will pack 896 CUDA cores and will feature 4 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide memory interface. The GPU is clocked at 1485 MHz with 1665 MHz GPU Boost, and the 8 Gbps memory produces 128 GB/s of memory bandwidth. With a TDP of just 75 Watts, most GTX 1650 cards will lack additional PCIe power inputs, relying entirely on the slot for power. Most entry-level implementations of the GTX 1650 feature very simple aluminium fan-heatsink coolers. VideoCardz compiled a number of leaked pictures of upcoming GTX 1650 graphics cards.

AMD Readies 50th Anniversary Special Edition Ryzen 7 2700X - tech
    (hx) 10:00 AM CEST - Apr,16 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a new commemorative special edition package of the Ryzen 7 2700X eight-core desktop processor. This package carries the PIB SKU number "YD270XBGAFA50." American online retailer ShopBLT had it listed for USD $340.95 before pulling the listing down and marking it "out of stock." The listing doesn't come with any pictures or details about the SKU, except mentioning that a Wraith Prism RGB CPU cooler is included (as it normally is for the 2700X PIB package). Given that AMD hasn't changed the model number, we expect these processors to have the same specifications as regular Ryzen 7 2700X, but with some special packaging material, and perhaps some special laser engraving on the processor's IHS. AMD has used tin boxes in the past for its first FX-series processors, so the possibility of something similar cannot be ruled out. Since pricing of this SKU isn't significantly higher, we don't expect it to be of a higher bin (better overclockers) than regular 2700X chips. Based on the 12 nm "Pinnacle Ridge" silicon, the 2700X is an 8-core/16-thread processor derived from the "Zen+" architecture, with 3.70 GHz clock-speed, 4.30 GHz maximum Precision Boost, XFR, L2 cache of 512 KB per core, and 16 MB of shared L3 cache.

NVIDIA Also Releases Tech Demos for RTX - tech
    (hx) 10:22 PM CEST - Apr,11 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
NVIDIA has released the Game Ready Driver 425.31 WHQL which enables ray tracing for GeForce GTX graphics cards - a capability previously reserved for the company's RTX series of graphics cards. This change "enables millions more gamers with GeForce GTX GPUs to experience ray tracing for the first time ever", as the list of DXR-capable graphics cards from NVIDIA has grown considerably as of today. In addition to the driver release which enables the visual goodies associated with real-time ray tracing, NVIDIA has also released a trio of tech demos on GeForce.com which you can freely download to check out ray tracing first hand on GTX and RTX graphics cards. Not only will these demos give you a taste of what you might expect from games that incorporate DXR features, but like any good demo they will help users get a sense of how their system might handle these effects.

The Star Wars tech demo is the most well known, certainly, with its studies on reflections on Captain Phasma's breastplate. Atomic Heart is another one that makes use of RTX for reflections and shadows, while Justice adds caustics to that equation. If you have a Turing graphics card, you can test these demos in their full glory, with added DLSS for improved performance. If you're on Pascal, you won't have that performance-enhancing mode available, and will have to slog it through software computations.
NVIDIA GeForce 425.31 WHQL driver adds DXR - tech
    (hx) 04:51 PM CEST - Apr,11 2019 - Post a comment / read (5)
NVIDIA today released the year's most important GeForce driver update, version 425.31 WHQL. The drivers enable DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API support for GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1660, GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1070, and GTX 1060 6 GB, in addition to TITAN graphics cards based on the "Pascal" and "Volta" architectures. The DXR workload is executed by the CUDA cores entirely, which makes these GPUs significantly slower than NVIDIA's RTX 20-series chips that have dedicated hardware such as RT cores and tensor cores. We've detailed this in our special article. In addition these drivers add Game Ready optimization for "Anno 1800," and fix a number of issues listed below.
    Fixed Issues in this Release
    • With SLI enabled, artifacts may appear in Adobe applications.
    • Fixed random crashes on GeForce RTX 20 series GPUs.
    • The game crashes when accessing the inventory menu.
    • Blue-screen crash occurs randomly with Bad Pool error during gameplay.
    • Artifacts appear when Texture Filtering is set to High Quality in the NVIDIA Control Panel.
    • Applications crash when using the Fabfilter plugin.
    • Fixed corrupted graphics in games on ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS notebooks.
    • With Stereo enabled, OUT of Memory message appears when launching the application.
    AOC Readying New AGON 353-series - 4K HDR 1000 Gaming - tech
    (hx) 04:46 PM CEST - Apr,11 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
AOC is readying the next generation of their enthusiast-gaming AGON line. The 353 series supersedes the 352 series launched in February last year, and keeps the 35" diagonal of its previous iteration. The specs are up there with the best available for what a VA panel can offer: 4K resolution, 1000 nits peak brightness in HDR mode, 1 ms (MTRT response time, or a rated 4 ms GtG) and a 200 Hz maximum refresh rate with support for AMD's FreeSync 2 or NIDIA's G-Sync HDR. There's also 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, if color accuracy is a must. The AGON 353-series will be available in two models, for either AMD FreeSync 2 or NVIDIA G-SyncHDR certification. AG353UCG featuring NVIDIA's G-Sync HDR as well as another one supporting AMD's FreeSync 2 HDR. The G-Sync HDR version, however, will be carrying a 512-zone full array local dimming for increased contrast. Connectors include HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and a four port USB 3.1 (5 Gbps) HUB. The NVIDIA G-Sync version is expected to launch around June this year; no word on the AMD equivalent. No word on pricing either, but don't expect these (particularly the NVIDIA one, with its full array local dimming) to come cheap.

Adobe Declares Shockwave Dead - tech
    (hx) 04:27 PM CEST - Apr,11 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
In an almost absolutely non-shocking move, Adobe has declared their Shockwave software plugin for accelerating web content to be going the way of the dodo when it comes to official support. The move follows the internet's advancement, where HTML5 and WebGL have superseded the usage of the proprietary Shockwave solution. A more open approach means there are a whole lot more players working on and paying attention to others' mistakes, and means there are a much higher number of developers working with the tools at any one timer than Adobe ever could dedicate engineers to. Following its statement on Shockwave being dead, Adobe pulled the downloads from their website, meaning that no additional versions or downloads of the software are coming from the company itself. Enterprise customers won't be left hanging, with a grace period of support from Adobe with new security updates for the remainder of their contracts. Current Shockwave-based content's future is unclear, but some content is bound to become inaccessible to most users.

No More Forced Updates in Windows 10 - tech
    (hx) 10:03 PM CEST - Apr,05 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
One of the big no-nos for some users looking to upgrade do Windows 10 was the fact that Microsoft enforced constant, 6-month update cycles independent of whether users wanted them or not. This move was done to streamline the update process and keep all users at parity when it comes to important security and feature updates that Microsoft considered relevant. However, it seems Microsoft is now abandoning this practice, which means that users that like to know exactly what is being changed in their systems - and at a time of their convenience - now have one less reason to not upgrade. Not only will Windows no longer push updates inadvertently, now home users will also have the ability to not only pause updates, but also remove them. There's a caveat, though - you won't be able to postpone feature updates forever. As it stands, Microsoft has an 18 month "end of life" period for major Windows 10 versions, which means that after your 18 months of postponing updates are up, you PC will still update to the latest version

Additional improvements to put users more in control of updates that are being introduced with the May 2019 Update include:

    • Extended ability to pause updates for both feature and monthly updates. This extension ability is for all editions of Windows 10, including Home. Based on user feedback we know that any update can come at an inconvenient time, such as when a PC is needed for a big presentation. So, we’re making it possible for all users to pause both feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times). Once the 35-day pause period is reached, users will need to update their device before pausing again.
    • Intelligent active hours to avoid disruptive update restarts. The active hours feature, introduced in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, relies on a manually configured time range to avoid automatically installing updates and rebooting. Many users leave the active hours setting at its 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. default. To further enhance active hours, users will now have the option to let Windows Update intelligently adjust active hours based on their device-specific usage patterns.
    • Improved update orchestration to improve system responsiveness. This feature will improve system performance by intelligently coordinating Windows updates and Microsoft Store updates, so they occur when users are away from their devices to minimize disruptions.
Windows 10 Game Bar will add Spotify, Gallery and Memes - tech
    (hx) 03:12 PM CEST - Apr,05 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Today, Microsoft announced some new features that are coming to the Windows 10 Game Bar, which all Xbox Insiders can enable right now as long as they're on Windows 10 version 1809 or higher. First off, Spotify integration is coming, so you'll be able to stream your music while you play your games. In the widget menu on the Game Bar, you'll find an option for Spotify where you can sign in with your credentials. There's also a widget for adjusting the volume. You can also turn your screenshots into memes. You can take your screenshot with the Capture widget, add text to it in the Game Bar gallery, and share it to Twitter directly. Next, there's a new Xbox Social widget that allows you to see what your friends are up to, send them a message, and more. You can use the same features in the Xbox app for mobile platforms and for Windows 10. And finally, you can now customize the Game Bar to pin widgets, decide where you want them, and more. To access these features, go to the Xbox Insider Hub app on your PC, select Insider Content, and choose Windows Gaming.
