AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.2 Drivers - tech
(hx) 11:29 PM CEST - Sep,13 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD late Thursday released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.2 beta drivers. These drivers add optimization for "Borderlands 3," with up to 16 percent improvement in frame-rates compared to the older 19.9.1 drivers, as tested with a Radeon RX 5700. The drivers also introduce support for Radeon Image Sharpening on graphics cards based on the "Polaris" architecture (such as RX 580, RX 480, etc), for DirectX 12 and Vulkan games. Among the issues fixed with 19.9.2 are frame-rates getting locked to 30 with V-sync enabled on some displays with 75 Hz refresh-rate set; system instability when watching videos in a web-browser on some machines with RX 5700 series graphics cards; audio in ReLive desktop capture being corrupted; and problems with Enhanced Sync.
Windows 10 KB4515384 is now causing audio issues - tech
(hx) 12:10 AM CEST - Sep,13 2019 - Post a comment / read (3)
On September 10, Microsoft shipped Patch Tuesday updates for all supported versions of Windows 10, including the May 2019 Update (version 1903). The update comes with a number of security fixes and quality improvements, but it also breaks Windows Search and even audio on some PCs. The last optional update Windows 10 version 1903 had a couple of issues hitting Cortana (SearchUI.exe) to Windows Search. Fortunately, the high CPU has been fixed in the Build 18362.356 (KB4515384). However, some PCs with Windows 10 KB4515384 suffers from an annoying audio bug and as well as a load of other problems. According to numerous posts (1, 2, 3), users are reporting that the cumulative update breaks down audio or reduces the volume when playing games. Tweaking with audio settings and uninstalling the update apparently restores the expected behaviour.

The issue has yet to be acknowledged by Microsoft in its Windows 10 release information page, but users have suggested a few workarounds. In the Windows Sound settings - which you can access by right-clicking the speaker icon in the system tray, then choosing Sound Control Panel from the sidebar options - changing the audio quality to 16-bit, 44,100Hz seems to have fixed the issue for some. For others, enabling and disabling all sound effects fixed the issue.

In related news, Windows 10 Build 18362.356 also breaks the Start menu and Search on the desktop for a number of users. Microsoft says they are investigating the issue and a fix will be included in the upcoming release.

GTX 1080 Ti vs. RTX 2070 Super vs. 5700 XT - tech
(hx) 06:49 PM CEST - Sep,09 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
This is a straightforward comparison pitting the previous generation GeForce flagship, the GTX 1080 Ti head to head against the RTX 2070 Super and RX 5700 XT in 39 games. A standard GPU test rig was used, comprising a Core i9-9900K clocked at 5GHz with 16GB of DDR4-3400 memory.
GTX 1080 Ti vs. RTX 2070 Super
As you can see on the graph below, the older GTX Pascal was 3% faster on average at 1440p. Overall that means very similar performance on average, though we see big differences when looking at individual titles in some instances. The 1080 Ti, for example, was 16% faster in Gears 5, 15% faster in World of Tanks and 13% faster in Quake Champions and War Thunder. It was also up to 10% slower in CSGO and Wolfenstein Youngblood, 9% slower in Forza Horizon 4 and 8% slower in Rainbow Six Siege.

GTX 1080 Ti vs. Radeon 5700 XT
When compared to the RX 5700 XT, the 1080 Ti was 9% faster on average at 1440p and as this figure suggests, the GeForce GPU came out on top in significantly more titles. The outliers include a 34% victory in War Thunder and 32% in Vermintide 2, while it was also quite a bit faster in World of Tanks and Metro Exodus.

Now, should you buy the 1080 Ti? Only if the price is right. Looking at completed listings on eBay we see that GTX 1080 Ti’s are currently selling for about $500 with the most affordable example priced at around $450. Honestly we were expecting them to be much cheaper.

You can buy a brand new RTX 2070 Super for $510. Saving ~$60 for a second hand card that probably has been abused a bit, a 1080 Ti doesn’t seem like a smart investment. Moreover, you can snag brand new 5700 XT's for around $425 right now, so given the 1080 Ti was on average only 9% faster, paying a little more for a second hand model doesn’t seem worth it. Based on today's results, we wouldn't pay more than $400 for a used GTX 1080 Ti, in fact they’d only start to tempt us around the $350 mark.

Intel Core i9-9900KS to be Available from October - tech
(hx) 07:00 AM CEST - Sep,06 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel's response to the 3rd generation Ryzen processor series, the Core i9-9900KS, will be generally available in October. The company will extensively market it as the best processor money can buy for gaming, and the specs to support that claim are formidable - 8-core/16-thread, with an all-core Turbo Boost frequency of 5.00 GHz. Intel will also actively publicize the growing clamor against real-world boost frequencies of 3rd gen Ryzen processors falling short of what's advertised, as detailed in the slide below. "5 GHz means 5 GHz" could be a prominent catchphrase of the chip's marketing, highlighting the all-core boost clocks. This chip is based on the existing 14 nm++ "Coffee Lake Refresh" silicon, but is likely its topmost bin. Intel didn't, however, specify the TDP or pricing of the processor. The TDP is bound to be higher than that of the i9-9900K, as it would take a lot more power to sustain 5.00 GHz across all 8 cores. Intel may also try to retake the $499 price-point. The company may time the launch of this chip to closely follow AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 3950X 16-core/32-thread processor launch, which is due later this month. Intel's performance numbers for the i9-9900KS focus squarely on gaming and applications relevant to home users or PC enthusiasts. The i9-9900KS ships in a similar-looking acrylic case as the i9-9900K, with "Special Edition" branding on the front face. The retail package continues to lack a cooling solution.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Sep,05 2019 - Post a comment
AMD today posted the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition drivers. Version 19.9.1 beta comes with day-one optimization for "Gears 5," with up to 5 percent performance improvement in the DirectX 12 mode. It also expands the Vulkan API feature-set with four new extensions, "VK_AMD_device_coherent_memory," "VK_EXT_calibrated_timestamps," "VK_EXT_line_rasterization," and "VK_EXT_shader_demote_to_helper_invocation." Lastly, the drivers address a bug that causes GIGABYTE RGB Fusion 2.0 software to hang the system on graphics cards based on RX 5700-series GPUs.
The change-log follows.

Support For
  • Gears 5: Up to 8% performance improvement in Gears of War 5 running DirectX 12 on Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition version 19.9.1 vs. 19.8.2
Added Vulkan Support
  • VK_AMD_device_coherent_memory: This extension adds device coherent and device uncached memory types. Device coherent and uncached memory are expected to have lower performance for general access than non-device coherent memory but can be useful in certain scenarios particularly so for debugging.
  • VK_EXT_calibrated_timestamps: This extension provides an interface to query calibrated timestamps obtained quasi simultaneously from two time domains such as host and device time domains.
  • VK_EXT_line_rasterization: This extension adds some line rasterization features that are commonly used in CAD applications and that are supported in other APIs like OpenGL. These features include Bresenham-style line rasterization, smooth rectangular lines (coverage to alpha) and stippled lines for all three line rasterization modes.
  • VK_EXT_shader_demote_to_helper_invocation: This extension adds Vulkan support for the SPV_EXT_demote_to_helper_invocation SPIR-V extension. The SPIR-V extension provides a new instruction that allows shaders to "demote" a fragment shader invocation to behave like a helper invocation for its duration. The demoted invocation will have no further side effects and will not output to the framebuffer but remains active and can participate in computing derivatives and in subgroup operations. This is a better match for the "discard" instruction in HLSL.
Fixed Issues
  • Launching RGB Fusion 2.0 may cause a system hang on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products system configurations.

Kodi 18.4 released - tech
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Sep,02 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
The Kodi media centre has today been updated to version 18.4 will a selection of new bug fixes pertaining to the user interface, playback and display, PVR, and other general fixes. The new release certainly doesn’t bring anything groundbreaking but the bug fixes should provide for a more stable experience. The most interesting fixes in this release concern media playback, for example, in Kodi 18.3 there was a memory leak and a segfault issue on Linux systems, with the patches in 18.4, users will experience fewer crashes and less hardware resource use. Users on all platforms will benefit from the inclusion of FFmpeg 4.0.4 in this update which itself includes a plethora of its own fixes over earlier versions.

You can find the downloads for the update on Kodi’s website right now. Linux and Android users are advised to wait until the update makes it to the official repositories or the Play Store respectively for the sake of stability. If you’ve installed Kodi via the Microsoft Store the update will arrive according to Microsoft’s schedule. For a complete changelog between Kodi 18.3 and Kodi 18.4, check out this comparison over at Github.
Only Small % of 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs Hit Their Advertised Speeds - tech
(hx) 10:05 PM CEST - Sep,02 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
WDer8auer published his survey of boost clocks found on 3rd generation Ryzen CPUs. Collecting data from almost 3,000 entries from people around the world, he has found out that a majority of the 3000 series Ryzen CPUs are not hitting their advertised boost speeds. Perhaps one of the worst results from the entire survey are for the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X, for which only 5.6% of entries reported have managed to reach the boost speeds AMD advertises. However, the situation is better for lower-end SKUs, with about half of the Ryzen 5 3600 results showing that their CPU is boosting correctly and within advertised numbers.

AMD Readies Three HEDT Chipsets: TRX40, TRX80, and WRX80 - tech
(hx) 11:01 PM CEST - Aug,29 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD is preparing to surprise Intel with its 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper processors derived from the "Rome" MCM (codenamed "Castle Peak" for the client-platform), that features up to 64 CPU cores, a monolithic 8-channel DDR4 memory interface, and 128 PCIe gen 4.0 lanes. For the HEDT platform, AMD could reconfigure the I/O controller die for two distinct sub-platforms within HEDT - one targeting gamers/enthusiasts, and another targeting the demographic that buys Xeon W processors, including the W-3175X. The gamer/enthusiast-targeted processor line could feature a monolithic 4-channel DDR4 memory interface, and 64 PCI-Express gen 4.0 lanes from the processor socket, and additional lanes from the chipset; while the workstation-targeted processor line could essentially be EPYCs, with a wider memory bus width and more platform PCIe lanes; while retaining drop-in backwards-compatibility with AMD X399 (at the cost of physically narrower memory and PCIe I/O). To support this diverse line of processors, AMD is coming up with not one, but three new chipsets: TRX40, TRX80, and WRX80. The TRX40 could have a lighter I/O feature-set (similar to the X570), and probably 4-channel memory on the motherboards. The TRX80 and WRX80 could leverage the full I/O of the "Rome" MCM, with 8-channel memory and more than 64 PCIe lanes.

Porting DirectX 12 games to Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Aug,28 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has released a new set of official resources to help game devs port their DirectX 12-based games onto the Windows 7 operating system. Most notably this means that it will be possible to get Nvidia-supported DirectX Raytracing (DXR) games running on the older OS. To some Windows 10 users that might seem entirely unnecessary – after all Windows 7 is an operating system that’s two generations behind – but with a 32% overall market share there are still a whole lot of Win7 users, and not far behind the percentage of people running the latest version of Microsoft’s OS on their PC. And that means a lot of potential gamers are being locked out of running all those DX12-based games.

Synced Off-Planet Performance with Geforce RTX 2080 Ti - tech
(hx) 05:28 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
PCGamesHardware have shared a video, showing the ray tracing effects of SYNCED: Off-Planet. SYNCED: Off-Planet is a game that is heavily inspired by The Division, and its Gamescom 2019 demo had major performance issues even on NVIDIA’s most powerful gaming GPU, the RTX2080Ti. PCGamesHardware used FRAPS in order to record the game’s performance. As we can clearly see, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX2080Ti was struggling to keep 50-60fps. In some scenes, there were even drops below 45fps, something that is really disappointing.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.8.1 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 02:21 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment
AMD late-Tuesday silently posted a WHQL-signed version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.8.1 drivers that it originally released as a Beta on August 12. The new 19.8.1 WHQL drivers, released on 20th August, are the first proper WHQL drivers since AMD's Radeon RX 5700-series launch. Besides WHQL, the underlying code is identical to 19.8.1 Beta, and hence the changelog is untouched. TechPowerUp confirmed with AMD that there are no underlying code changes, and that WHQL signing is the only change. Adrenalin 19.8.1 adds Microsoft PlayReady 3.0 DRM standard compliance to Radeon RX 5700-series GPUs.
NVIDIA Fixes GeForce 436.02 Installer - tech
(hx) 02:18 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment
NVIDIA yesterday posted its much publicized GeForce 436.02 WHQL Gamescom Special graphics drivers that brought about performance improvements across a spectrum of games, and added new features such as low-latency input (akin to AMD Radeon Anti-Lag), and beat Intel to Integer Upscaling. The installer that brought all these goodies to you, however, was buggy, as NVIDIA admitted. It originally installed GeForce Experience regardless of obtaining GDPR-mandated user-consent, and made deselecting the application in the "Custom Install" components list impossible. Later in the evening, NVIDIA temporarily pulled the driver from the Downloads section of its website, and hours later, re-uploaded the drivers with an installer that fixes this bug. The driver version number remains the same, all that's changed is an "-rp" suffix in the installer binary's file-name (eg: "436.02-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql-rp.exe").

WD announces a 12TB external HDD - tech
(hx) 09:15 PM CEST - Aug,20 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
For gamers who regularly have to delete old games to make space for newer ones in their limited capacity consoles, Western Digital has now announced five models under the "WD Black" line-up of external gaming hard drives to take care of those worries. These drives range in capacity from a 500GB P50 Game Drive SSD to a 12TB D10 Game Drive for Xbox One that can store up to 300 games to make for an impressive library of titles, which showing off would probably be as much fun as playing. Jared Peck, WD's Senior Product Manager in an interview with GamesBeat, said that people often don't play games citing their fully stuffed console storage in what the company has identified as one of the pain points in its survey. It mentions 45% of gamers who'd be buying a storage device in the next year and 41% of PC gamers who'll definitely be getting more storage. There's also a double-digit figure for console owners who are already attaching external storage to their consoles, reports VentureBeat.
  • WD Black P50 Game Drive SSD (500GB $180, 1TB $250, 2TB $500) - This aluminum drive comes with a 20 Gbps Superspeed USB over Type-C (only drive in the line-up with this connector, rest have Micro-B) for transfer speeds of up to 1,980MB/s. It has a five-year warranty with shipment expected later this year.
  • WD Black P10 Game Drive (2TB $90, 4TB $130, 5TB $150) - This drive has 140MB/s transfer speeds for the 2TB version while the 4TB and 5TB versions have 130MB/s. The latter variant can store 125 games coming in at roughly 40GB each. It also supports Superspeed USB 5GB/s connectivity, comes with a three-year warranty and ships this month.
  • WD Black P10 Game Drive for Xbox One (3TB $100, 5TB $150) - This drive comes with a two-month free subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, features USB 3.2 Gen 1 and transfer speeds of 130MB/s. It has a three-year warranty and ships this month.
  • WD Black D10 Game Drive (8TB $200) - With space for up to 200 games, this 7200 RPM drive has a faster 250MB/s transfer speed. It features active cooling and has an external power supply that also has two 7.5W charging ports for your devices. It has a three-year warranty and ships in September.
  • WD Black D10 Game Drive for Xbox One (8TB $200, 12TB $300) - The most capacious offering in this model weighs a rather hefty 0.96kg that's capable of storing 300 games. The ample storage can be put to good use with the three-month free subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offered with this drive. Spinning at 7200 RPM, it can transfer data at 250MB/s and like the standard D10, there's an external power supply with two 7.5W charging ports. Also coming with a three-year warranty, this drive ships in September.
NVIDIA GeForce 436.02 WHQL driver - tech
(hx) 05:49 PM CEST - Aug,20 2019 - Post a comment / read (6)
NVIDIA has released a brand new driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, the NVIDIA GeForce 436.02 WHQL driver improves performance by up to 23% in popular games. Furthermore, this Gamescom 2019 driver adds New Ultra-Low Latency, Integer Scaling and Image Sharpening. Going into more details, NVIDIA claims that most of the performance improvements come for 1080p and 1440p. Some of the games that see better performance with these new drivers are: Apex Legends, Battlefield V, Forza Horizon 4, Strange Brigade and World War Z. In addition, NVIDIA has introduced a new Ultra-Low Latency mode. If enabled, this feature would benefit games that are GPU bound with framerates hovering between 60 to 100, per Nvidia. It’s worth noting, however, that this mode can only be enabled for DX9 and DX11 titles as DX12 and Vulkan APIs give a game more control over the render queue.

FYI, The installer of these drivers appears to have a major bug that forces the installation of GeForce Experience without obtaining GPDR-compliant consent from the user so you cannot deselect GeForce Experience from the list of components in the Custom Install screen. TechPowerUp has a free utility that lets users take complete control over their NVIDIA graphics driver installation, called NVCleanstall. Using this software you may skip lot more optional components than what the NVIDIA Installer allows, such as Telemetry. Grab a beta version of NVCleanstall from here.

Minecraft to Get NVIDIA RTX Ray-tracing Support - tech
(hx) 10:57 PM CEST - Aug,19 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
Minecraft is the perfect gaming paradox. It's a stupidly-popular title, but with simple graphics that can run on practically any Windows machine, but supports the latest 3D graphics APIs such as DirectX 12. The title now adds another feather to its technical feature-set cap, with support for NVIDIA RTX real-time raytracing. RTX will now be used to render realistic light shafts using path-tracing, global illumination, shadows, ambient occlusion, and simple reflections. "Ray tracing sits at the center of what we think is next for Minecraft," said Saxs Persson, Franchise Creative Director of Minecraft at Microsoft. "RTX gives the Minecraft world a brand-new feel to it. In normal Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow, but with ray tracing turned on, you really get to see the specular highlight, you get to see the reflection, you can even see a mob reflected in it." NVIDIA and Microsoft are yet to put out a release date on this feature update. It remains to be seen how hardcore crafters take this feature.

The "Phantom Canyon" NUC is powered by a 28 W 10 nm+ "Tiger Lake-U" SoC that features PCI-Express gen 4. The package also implements Intel's "Gen 12" graphics processor that's derived from the Xe architecture it's currently working on, according to Chinese publication PTTWeb. The NUC will also feature discrete graphics options in the price-range of the current GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060 ($299 to $349). In related news, we see subtle hints that Intel will give its chipset bus a major update in future generations of its desktop and mobile platforms. Apparently, future platforms could feature DMI spread over 8 lanes as opposed to 4 on current platforms, besides the update to PCIe gen 4. This quadrupling in bandwidth compared to DMI 3.0 (PCIe 3.0 x4) is necessitated by the growth in bandwidth-hungry devices such as NVMe SSDs, external Thunderbolt 3 graphics cards, USB 3.2 flash drives, etc.

NVIDIA Issues Warning to Upgrade Drivers Due to Security Patches - tech
(hx) 11:39 AM CEST - Aug,05 2019 - Post a comment / read (5)
NVIDIA has found a total of five security vulnerabilities with its Windows drivers for GeForce, Quadro and Tesla lineup of graphics cards. These new security risks are labeled as very dangerous and have the potential to cause local code execution, denial of service, or escalation of privileges, unless the system is updated. Users are advised to update their Windows drivers as soon as possible in order to stay secure and avoid all of these vulnerabilities, so be sure to check your drivers for latest version. Exploits are only accessible on Windows based OSes, starting from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

However, one fact that is easing this situation is that in order to exploit a system, attacker must have local access to the machine that is running NVIDIA GPU, as remote exploit can not happen. Bellow are the tables provided by NVIDIA that show type of exploit along with rating it carries and which driver versions are affected. There are no mitigations for this exploit, as driver update is the only available solution to secure the system.

he vulnerabilities are rated using CVSS V3 base scoring system and they are arranged as following:
  • CVE-2019-5683 - Most dangerous of all the vulnerabilities. This exploits uses driver's trace logger weakness to create hard links, that software does not check. Attacker could create any link without getting warned by the system and force local code execution, denial of service or escalation of privileges. Rated with a score of 8.8.
  • CVE-2019-5684 - Vulnerability which uses carefully crafted shaders in order to cause out of bounds access to input texture array, possibly leading to denial of service or code execution. Rated with a score of 7.8
  • CVE-2019-5685 - Vulnerability which also uses carefully crafted shaders in order to cause out of bounds access to shader local temporary array, possibly leading to denial of service or code execution as well. Rated with a score of 7.8
  • CVE-2019-5686 - Vulnerability hidden in kernel mode layer handler for DxgkDdiEscape, which uses different data structures and DirectX API functions that are not always valid, leading to denial of service if the API function or data structure is incorrect. Rated with a score of 5.6.
  • CVE-2019-5687 - Least dangerous exploit of all five. It is also a problem in kernel model layer handler for DxgkDdiEscape, which may put system at risk if incorrect default permissions are used for an object. This can lead to information disclosure or denial of service. Rated with a score of 5.2.

Intel Plans to Launch Its Discrete GPU Lineup Starting at $200 - tech
(hx) 05:50 PM CEST - Aug,02 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
During interview with Russian YouTube channel called PRO Hi-Tech, Raja Koduri, Intel's chief architect and senior vice president of architecture, software and graphics, talked about his career, why he left AMD, and where Intel is going with its discrete GPU attempts. However, one of the most notable things Mr Koduri said was regarding upcoming GPU lineup code-named Arctic Sound. He noted that Intel plans to release first GPU as a mid-range model at a price of $200, while enterprise solutions that utilize HBM memory will follow that. Koduri said that he wants to replicate AMD's strategy of capturing high-volume price-points, such as the $199 Radeon RX 480. The plan here is to bring an affordable, good performing GPU to the masses - "GPUs for everyone" as he calls them. Additionally, he states that Intel's current strategy revolves around price, not performance, providing best possible value to consumers. Intel's approach for the next two or three years is to launch a complete lineup of GPUs, with a common architecture being used for everything from iGPUs found inside consumer CPUs to data-center GPUs.

Valve proposes changes to Linux kernel - tech
(hx) 11:26 PM CEST - Aug,01 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Valve has long supported the idea of improving the capabilities of Linux when it comes to PC gaming. Its recent efforts began with the ill-fated Steam Machine, which ran on the Linux-based SteamOS. It also made efforts to improve the open-source Windows compatibility layer Wine.

The problem with Wine is that it struggles with more hardware-demanding programs. Valve attacked this challenge by launching a beta version of Steam Play that includes Proton — a game-friendly build of Wine. While this did help some, there were still many issues with performance.

In the most recent build of Proton's patch notes, Valve proposes changes to the Linux kernel to overcome problems it saw while trying to run some games.

To begin with, it has an experimental replacement for esync called fsync which provides "support for futex-based in-process synchronization primitives" and reduces CPU usage more than esync. However, because it requires the use of the kernel's eventfd() function, it needs modifications to the Linux kernel to work correctly.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.7.4 Drivers - tech
(hx) 10:55 PM CEST - Jul,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD late Monday released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition. Version 19.7.4 Beta fixes a bug that caused "Grand Theft Auto V" to crash on machines with Radeon RX 5700-series graphics cards. The rest of its feature-set is identical to that of the 19.7.3 drivers. There's no mention in the change-log of the worsened idle fan-noise of RX 5700-series graphics cards observed from the upgrade to 19.7.3. However I can confirm that the 19.7.4 drivers do not fix this issue.
