Microsoft Hides Windows 10's Offline Account Option - tech
(hx) 11:27 PM CEST - Sep,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
Setting up a local account on Windows 10 was already a convoluted process: people had to make sure their device wasn't connected to the internet, confirm they don't have internet, click "Continue with limited setup" and then finally select the option to create an offline account. Otherwise the setup process would all but force them into setting up a Microsoft Account even though they really only wanted to use the system they had paid for. So how could that process be made even worse? The "Offline account" option has simply been renamed to "Domain join instead". Once clicking this option, you will see the familiar prompt that allows you to set your username and go through the motions to complete your install. Microsoft of course still tries once again to get you to create an online account, but you obviously don’t have to at this point. It’s a small change, but one that is likely to leave more than a few customers scratching their heads on how to create a local account. And that is likely just what Microsoft wanted to do; sow confusion so that users would throw their hands up in frustration and simply cave to creating a Microsoft Account.
AMD Releases Radeon Software 19.9.3 - tech
(hx) 11:21 PM CEST - Sep,30 2019 - Post a comment
AMD today released their latest Radeon Software driver. Version 19.9.3. brings with it a much requested feature: support for Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) on graphics cards based on the Vega architecture. It has been a sore point in the community for some time now how AMD's Vega, their high-performance architecture that offered greater performance than Polaris, was left in the dust in support for AMD's RIS, with only Navi (and then Polaris) users being able to benefit from the image quality-enhancing feature. Now, AMD has finally baked in driver support for that feature with Vega, so you can go on, install the latest driver, and see what it's all about. Additionally to adding RIS support for Vega, this driver includes specific performance and stability optimizations for Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the online tactical shooter from Ubisoft whose release is slated for October 4th. You can rest assured that you will have the best gameplay experience AMD could muster for launch day with this particular set of drivers
AMD "Raise the Game" Bundle is back - tech
(hx) 11:09 PM CEST - Sep,30 2019 - Post a comment
AMD announced the 2019 edition of its "Raise the Game" game-bundle offer that goes with purchase of its Ryzen desktop processors and Radeon RX graphics cards. The bundle extends the 3-month Xbox Game Pass to a much larger part of AMD's product lineup, and not just the Radeon RX 5700-series. The bundle introduces three new AAA games to the mix - Tom Clancy's "Ghost Recon: Breakpoint," "The Outer Worlds," and "Borderlands 3," including AMD-exclusive in-game content. Depending on what AMD product you buy, you either get both games, or get to choose between the two. The 3-month Xbox Game Pass stays included. AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 series and Ryzen 7 3800X includes both games - "The Outer Worlds" and "Borderlands 3," - and the 3-month Xbox Game Pass. The Ryzen 7 3700X, 3600X, 2700X, and 2700 include one of the two games - "The Outer Worlds" or "Borderlands 3," and the 3-month Xbox Game Pass. The Ryzen 5 3600, 3400G, and Ryzen 5 2000-series include just the 3-month Xbox Game Pass. Over in the GPU front, buyers of Radeon RX 5700-series, RX 590, RX 580, and RX 570, get to choose one of the two games - Tom Clancy's "Ghost Recon: Breakpoint" or "Borderlands 3," and also receive the 3-month Xbox Game Pass. The Radeon VII, Radeon RX Vega series, and Radeon RX 560 stocks include 3-month Xbox Game Pass. You also get to choose either of the two games when you buy a qualifying pre-built desktop or notebook powered by AMD Ryzen or Radeon products
First details surface for Intel's next-generation CPU - tech
(hx) 04:35 PM CEST - Sep,30 2019 - Post a comment
Sunny Cove is codename for Intel's first truly new performance CPU core design since "Skylake," and made its debut with the company's 10 nm "Ice Lake" processors, packing the first tangible IPC increase in years. VLSI guru Jim Keller is leading the effort to build Intel's future CPU core designs, and dropped a big hint on what to expect, speaking at a gathering in U.C. Berkeley. It's unclear which specific core Keller is referring to. The immediate successor to "Sunny Cove" is codenamed "Willow Cove," and Intel's own public sketch hints at an incremental upgrade over Sunny Cove, with faster caches and process-level optimization. It's only with "Golden Cove," slated for 2021, that Intel speaks of its next round of IPC increases (dubbed "ST perf"). It's plausible that Keller is referring to this core since a 2021 launch would fit better with a 2018-19 design phase.

In his talk, Keller describes Intel's next big CPU core as being "significantly bigger" than "Sunny Cove," with its 800-wide instruction window, and "massive" data- and branch-predictors, to put Intel back on a linear performance growth trajectory between generations. Keller also commented on this being a "mindset change" at Intel, which over the past decade, only delivered minor IPC increments between generations, and focused on other areas, such as efficiency. In stark contrast, through the 1990s and 2000s, Intel delivered IPC leaps between generations, such as the one between "Netburst" and "Conroe," and onwards to "Nehalem." These were in-part helped by rapid process advancements that slowed in the 2010s as Intel approached the sub-10 nm scale.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900: A 12-Core 65W CPU Listed - tech
(hx) 07:08 PM CEST - Sep,29 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
A motherboard maker has added support for AMD's yet-to-be-announced Ryzen 9 3900 CPU. The product will be one of the industry’s first 12-core CPU featuring a mainstream TDP of 65 W. In addition, the same manufacturer revealed that there is a Pro version of the said CPU incoming. Biostar's X470NH motherboard recently gained support for AMD's yet-to-be-announced Ryzen 9 3900 CPU with a 65 W TDP, which may indicate that the launch of the unit is imminent. This is not the first time an unannounced CPU has been listed in a CPU validation list. As a second source, the processor was listed in Eurasian Economic Union’s index of crypto-capable devices as a 'twelve-core microprocessor'. Based on the information provided by the sources, AMD’s Ryzen 9 3900 is a 12-core CPU with SMT that operates at 3.1 GHz default frequency (and presumably featuring a 4.2 GHz maximum turbo frequency from a 3DMark listing) and a 65 W TDP. The relatively low thermal envelope makes the Ryzen 9 3900 compatible with mainstream motherboards and cooling systems and enables PC makers to build relatively small computers featuring a 12-core processor. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 9 Pro 3900 adds various security technologies, enterprise management, and reliability enhancements for business and corporate computers. It is unclear when exactly AMD plans to introduce its 12-core Ryzen 9 3900 and Ryzen 9 Pro 3900 processors and how much will they cost, yet it is reasonable to think that both products will be available in the near future.

In other news, AMD’s Ryzen 9 3900X CPU which currently reigns supreme as the flagship offering of the 3rd Gen Ryzen lineup is facing a severe shortage across the globe and in all major retail outlets. The 12 core chip launched back in July at an introductory price of $499 US but you’d be lucky if you can find it now & for the same price. Now three months after the launch of the processor, it faces an incredible shortage throughout the globe. Just going through major retailers, the chip is now selling for $799.99 US on Newegg, $829.99 US on Amazon and $799.99 US (plus $222.03 Additional Costs) on eBay. The chip was selling for a lower price on Micro Center but is no longer available and same is the case with the renowned German retailer, MindFactory, who don’t have the chip available anymore. There’s also a 1-2 week shipping delay depending on the retailer you get the product from.

Intel's 14nm Chip Shortage Continues - tech
(hx) 06:22 PM CEST - Sep,25 2019 - Post a comment
Intel is constantly having troubles with its silicon manufacturing business lately. Firstly the late delivery of 10 nm, then the shortage of 14 nm chips that started all the way back in 2018. Despite the making of $1 Billion investment into extending its 14 nm production capacity, there seems to be no end of troubles in sight. According to sources close to DigiTimes, 14 nm production has fallen short of demand again and will likely cause many notebook manufacturers to delay their products to 2020. Most likely victim of this delay is the newly announced 10th generation mobile CPUs codenamed Comet Lake. Those CPUs were supposed to be built using Intel's "14nm++" revision of 14 nm technology which targets higher CPU frequencies and improved efficiency, but most likely due to continued shortage of 14nm, there will be only a few notebooks powered by these chips. As the source suggests, many manufacturers are likely to delay the launch of their products to 2020, when this situation is supposed to be resolved.

Intel i9-9900KS CPU details - tech
(hx) 06:46 PM CEST - Sep,21 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel's upcoming 5 GHz-on-all-cores Core i9-9900KS will certainly be a beast of a processor for the company - in more ways than one. The 8-core, 16-thread 5 5 GHz all-core turbo CPU will be Intel's best-performing consumer CPU for a while. The steps taken to ensure that have been the only ones Intel could do with their current CPU design and fabrication process - increase the TDP and improve all-core boost frequency, which should allow the CPU to perform incredibly well in peak performance.

The question that remains, of course, is how long the CPU will actually be able to keep its 5.0 GHz all-core frequency when it's engaged. The 127 W TDP as outed by an ASUS BIOS is a monstrous amount for an 8-core CPU, and I don't envy the heatsinks that will have to keep it in check. All in all, this seems to be nothing more than a CPU binned for Intel's purposes of becoming the best CPU for gaming and "home user relevant applications".

No amount of ridicule will change the fact that it will the fastest CPU for gaming. Whether buying one is a sane thing to do is another question...Otherwise it's a Pentium 4 HT, now in 14nm! :-D Do you remember guys the massive heat? :-D
AMD Ryzen 5 3500X Gaming Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 06:16 PM CEST - Sep,21 2019 - Post a comment
The AMD Ryzen 5 3500X as a six-core CPU that supports six threads (in other words, no SMT support) and has a base clock of 3.6 GHz, The CPU can turbo boost to 4.1GHz, has a 65W TDP and 32MB of L3 cache. According to the first gaming benchmarks, this budget CPU is as fast as the Intel Core i5-9400F. There is an extreme case in which AMD’s budget CPU is way faster than Intel’s counterpart, however, there are also some cases in which Intel’s CPU is slightly faster. The Ryzen 5 3500X's success will depend hugely on how AMD prices the six-core chip. Intel's Recommended Customer Price (RCP) for the Core i5-9400F is $182. However, we can usually find it on sale for $139.99. The price for the Ryzen 5 3500X on JD.com is 1,099 yuan, which converts to $155. There's also the more powerful AMD Ryzen 5 3600 selling for $199. If AMD could match the price of the Core i5-9400F, it'll be strong competition for the Intel chip.

NVIDIA Could Launch GTX 1650 Ti on October 22nd - tech
(hx) 05:43 PM CEST - Sep,19 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to the recent round of rumors, NVIDIA could extend its budget GPU offering on October 22nd when it will launch the new GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card. Expected to sit between GTX 1650 and GTX 1660, the new graphics card is supposed to be NVIDIA's answer to AMD's unannounced, low-end NAVI GPUs rumored to be called the RX 5600 series.

As per ITHome, GTX 1650 Ti will be priced at 1100 yuan which translates to $155, meaning that either GTX 1650 will get a price cut to sit below new Ti model or upcoming GTX 1650 Ti will have a price slightly above the rumored number. Envisioned to feature 4 GB of VRAM and anything between 1024 to 1280 CUDA cores, the new GPU could provide a good balance between current offerings and reduce the gap between GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 graphics cards.

Intel Adds More L3 Cache to Its Tiger Lake CPUs - tech
(hx) 10:15 PM CEST - Sep,17 2019 - Post a comment
nstLatX64 has posted a CPU dump of Intel's next-generation 10 nm CPUs codenamed Tiger Lake. With the CPUID of 806C0, this Tiger Lake chip runs at 1000 MHz base and 3400 MHz boost clocks which is lower than the current Ice Lake models, but that is to be expected given that this might be just an engineering sample, meaning that production/consumer revision will have better frequency. Perhaps one of the most interesting findings this dump shows is the new L3 cache configuration. Up until now Intel usually put 2 MB of L3 cache per each core, however with Tiger Lake, it seems like the plan is to boost the amount of available cache. Now we are going to get 50% more L3 cache resulting in 3 MB per core or 12 MB in total for this four-core chip. Improved cache capacity can result in additional latency because of additional distance data needs to travel to get in and out of cache, but Intel's engineers surely solved this problem. Additionally, full AVX512 support is present except avx512_bf which supports bfloat16 floating-point variation found in Cooper Lake Xeons. Tiger Lake is set to launch next year.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Bundles - tech
(hx) 10:08 PM CEST - Sep,17 2019 - Post a comment
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's re-release will see the game supporting real-time raytracing, and given NVIDIA's current stand in the market as the only provider of hardware-accelerated raytracing capable GPUs, this partnership makes total sense. NVIDIA has announced that they will be bundling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with select RTX series GPUs, which gives gamers on the fence towards buying an RTX graphics card one more reason to take the plunge. The bundle is available for eligible GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 2080, 2070 Super, 2070, 2060 Super and 2060 products, whether in discrete card or laptop/desktop pre-built form. The game will be taking advantage of ray tracing and adaptive shading, and will bring gamers back to Soap and Price's story.

Borderlands 3: How to fix stuttering - tech
(hx) 10:58 PM CEST - Sep,14 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
Borderlands 3 drops frames as readily as it drops guns, it seems. Aside from significant lag and frame drops across all platforms, nearly everyone in the official Reddit bug report thread has complained about a frame drop problem. The stuttering happens whenever they aim down the weapon’s sights. Borderlands 3 relies heavily upon users to aiming down their weapon's sights or their scope. The stuttering leaves them open to attack, or to consistently miss. The stuttering can get so bad. The issue kills the game for some players. Aiming down the sights is a major cause of stuttering. The game drops frames suddenly whenever a player looks down their scopes and then going out of it. While there’s no official fix, a Reddit user has found a temporary solution. Note that the answer work for every weapon. Weapons with major scopes, such as snipers, will still face an issue.

The temporary fix is to go to graphics settings and move the overall setting to low. From there, change the individual settings to what you wish. Users report that this works well for most weapons. Some still have issues, but it’s better than all of them having the problem. Some other users claimed that they were able to reduce the stutters they were experiencing by setting Texture Streaming on Low or Medium. On the other hand, some other users stated that they were able to reduce the stuttering issues by using a previous version of the GeForce drivers.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.2 Drivers - tech
(hx) 11:29 PM CEST - Sep,13 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD late Thursday released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.2 beta drivers. These drivers add optimization for "Borderlands 3," with up to 16 percent improvement in frame-rates compared to the older 19.9.1 drivers, as tested with a Radeon RX 5700. The drivers also introduce support for Radeon Image Sharpening on graphics cards based on the "Polaris" architecture (such as RX 580, RX 480, etc), for DirectX 12 and Vulkan games. Among the issues fixed with 19.9.2 are frame-rates getting locked to 30 with V-sync enabled on some displays with 75 Hz refresh-rate set; system instability when watching videos in a web-browser on some machines with RX 5700 series graphics cards; audio in ReLive desktop capture being corrupted; and problems with Enhanced Sync.
Windows 10 KB4515384 is now causing audio issues - tech
(hx) 12:10 AM CEST - Sep,13 2019 - Post a comment / read (3)
On September 10, Microsoft shipped Patch Tuesday updates for all supported versions of Windows 10, including the May 2019 Update (version 1903). The update comes with a number of security fixes and quality improvements, but it also breaks Windows Search and even audio on some PCs. The last optional update Windows 10 version 1903 had a couple of issues hitting Cortana (SearchUI.exe) to Windows Search. Fortunately, the high CPU has been fixed in the Build 18362.356 (KB4515384). However, some PCs with Windows 10 KB4515384 suffers from an annoying audio bug and as well as a load of other problems. According to numerous posts (1, 2, 3), users are reporting that the cumulative update breaks down audio or reduces the volume when playing games. Tweaking with audio settings and uninstalling the update apparently restores the expected behaviour.

The issue has yet to be acknowledged by Microsoft in its Windows 10 release information page, but users have suggested a few workarounds. In the Windows Sound settings - which you can access by right-clicking the speaker icon in the system tray, then choosing Sound Control Panel from the sidebar options - changing the audio quality to 16-bit, 44,100Hz seems to have fixed the issue for some. For others, enabling and disabling all sound effects fixed the issue.

In related news, Windows 10 Build 18362.356 also breaks the Start menu and Search on the desktop for a number of users. Microsoft says they are investigating the issue and a fix will be included in the upcoming release.

GTX 1080 Ti vs. RTX 2070 Super vs. 5700 XT - tech
(hx) 06:49 PM CEST - Sep,09 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
This is a straightforward comparison pitting the previous generation GeForce flagship, the GTX 1080 Ti head to head against the RTX 2070 Super and RX 5700 XT in 39 games. A standard GPU test rig was used, comprising a Core i9-9900K clocked at 5GHz with 16GB of DDR4-3400 memory.
GTX 1080 Ti vs. RTX 2070 Super
As you can see on the graph below, the older GTX Pascal was 3% faster on average at 1440p. Overall that means very similar performance on average, though we see big differences when looking at individual titles in some instances. The 1080 Ti, for example, was 16% faster in Gears 5, 15% faster in World of Tanks and 13% faster in Quake Champions and War Thunder. It was also up to 10% slower in CSGO and Wolfenstein Youngblood, 9% slower in Forza Horizon 4 and 8% slower in Rainbow Six Siege.

GTX 1080 Ti vs. Radeon 5700 XT
When compared to the RX 5700 XT, the 1080 Ti was 9% faster on average at 1440p and as this figure suggests, the GeForce GPU came out on top in significantly more titles. The outliers include a 34% victory in War Thunder and 32% in Vermintide 2, while it was also quite a bit faster in World of Tanks and Metro Exodus.

Now, should you buy the 1080 Ti? Only if the price is right. Looking at completed listings on eBay we see that GTX 1080 Ti’s are currently selling for about $500 with the most affordable example priced at around $450. Honestly we were expecting them to be much cheaper.

You can buy a brand new RTX 2070 Super for $510. Saving ~$60 for a second hand card that probably has been abused a bit, a 1080 Ti doesn’t seem like a smart investment. Moreover, you can snag brand new 5700 XT's for around $425 right now, so given the 1080 Ti was on average only 9% faster, paying a little more for a second hand model doesn’t seem worth it. Based on today's results, we wouldn't pay more than $400 for a used GTX 1080 Ti, in fact they’d only start to tempt us around the $350 mark.

Intel Core i9-9900KS to be Available from October - tech
(hx) 07:00 AM CEST - Sep,06 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel's response to the 3rd generation Ryzen processor series, the Core i9-9900KS, will be generally available in October. The company will extensively market it as the best processor money can buy for gaming, and the specs to support that claim are formidable - 8-core/16-thread, with an all-core Turbo Boost frequency of 5.00 GHz. Intel will also actively publicize the growing clamor against real-world boost frequencies of 3rd gen Ryzen processors falling short of what's advertised, as detailed in the slide below. "5 GHz means 5 GHz" could be a prominent catchphrase of the chip's marketing, highlighting the all-core boost clocks. This chip is based on the existing 14 nm++ "Coffee Lake Refresh" silicon, but is likely its topmost bin. Intel didn't, however, specify the TDP or pricing of the processor. The TDP is bound to be higher than that of the i9-9900K, as it would take a lot more power to sustain 5.00 GHz across all 8 cores. Intel may also try to retake the $499 price-point. The company may time the launch of this chip to closely follow AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 3950X 16-core/32-thread processor launch, which is due later this month. Intel's performance numbers for the i9-9900KS focus squarely on gaming and applications relevant to home users or PC enthusiasts. The i9-9900KS ships in a similar-looking acrylic case as the i9-9900K, with "Special Edition" branding on the front face. The retail package continues to lack a cooling solution.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.9.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Sep,05 2019 - Post a comment
AMD today posted the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition drivers. Version 19.9.1 beta comes with day-one optimization for "Gears 5," with up to 5 percent performance improvement in the DirectX 12 mode. It also expands the Vulkan API feature-set with four new extensions, "VK_AMD_device_coherent_memory," "VK_EXT_calibrated_timestamps," "VK_EXT_line_rasterization," and "VK_EXT_shader_demote_to_helper_invocation." Lastly, the drivers address a bug that causes GIGABYTE RGB Fusion 2.0 software to hang the system on graphics cards based on RX 5700-series GPUs.
The change-log follows.

Support For
  • Gears 5: Up to 8% performance improvement in Gears of War 5 running DirectX 12 on Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition version 19.9.1 vs. 19.8.2
Added Vulkan Support
  • VK_AMD_device_coherent_memory: This extension adds device coherent and device uncached memory types. Device coherent and uncached memory are expected to have lower performance for general access than non-device coherent memory but can be useful in certain scenarios particularly so for debugging.
  • VK_EXT_calibrated_timestamps: This extension provides an interface to query calibrated timestamps obtained quasi simultaneously from two time domains such as host and device time domains.
  • VK_EXT_line_rasterization: This extension adds some line rasterization features that are commonly used in CAD applications and that are supported in other APIs like OpenGL. These features include Bresenham-style line rasterization, smooth rectangular lines (coverage to alpha) and stippled lines for all three line rasterization modes.
  • VK_EXT_shader_demote_to_helper_invocation: This extension adds Vulkan support for the SPV_EXT_demote_to_helper_invocation SPIR-V extension. The SPIR-V extension provides a new instruction that allows shaders to "demote" a fragment shader invocation to behave like a helper invocation for its duration. The demoted invocation will have no further side effects and will not output to the framebuffer but remains active and can participate in computing derivatives and in subgroup operations. This is a better match for the "discard" instruction in HLSL.
Fixed Issues
  • Launching RGB Fusion 2.0 may cause a system hang on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products system configurations.

Kodi 18.4 released - tech
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Sep,02 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
The Kodi media centre has today been updated to version 18.4 will a selection of new bug fixes pertaining to the user interface, playback and display, PVR, and other general fixes. The new release certainly doesn’t bring anything groundbreaking but the bug fixes should provide for a more stable experience. The most interesting fixes in this release concern media playback, for example, in Kodi 18.3 there was a memory leak and a segfault issue on Linux systems, with the patches in 18.4, users will experience fewer crashes and less hardware resource use. Users on all platforms will benefit from the inclusion of FFmpeg 4.0.4 in this update which itself includes a plethora of its own fixes over earlier versions.

You can find the downloads for the update on Kodi’s website right now. Linux and Android users are advised to wait until the update makes it to the official repositories or the Play Store respectively for the sake of stability. If you’ve installed Kodi via the Microsoft Store the update will arrive according to Microsoft’s schedule. For a complete changelog between Kodi 18.3 and Kodi 18.4, check out this comparison over at Github.
Only Small % of 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs Hit Their Advertised Speeds - tech

WDer8auer published his survey of boost clocks found on 3rd generation Ryzen CPUs. Collecting data from almost 3,000 entries from people around the world, he has found out that a majority of the 3000 series Ryzen CPUs are not hitting their advertised boost speeds. Perhaps one of the worst results from the entire survey are for the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X, for which only 5.6% of entries reported have managed to reach the boost speeds AMD advertises. However, the situation is better for lower-end SKUs, with about half of the Ryzen 5 3600 results showing that their CPU is boosting correctly and within advertised numbers.

AMD Readies Three HEDT Chipsets: TRX40, TRX80, and WRX80 - tech
(hx) 11:01 PM CEST - Aug,29 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD is preparing to surprise Intel with its 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper processors derived from the "Rome" MCM (codenamed "Castle Peak" for the client-platform), that features up to 64 CPU cores, a monolithic 8-channel DDR4 memory interface, and 128 PCIe gen 4.0 lanes. For the HEDT platform, AMD could reconfigure the I/O controller die for two distinct sub-platforms within HEDT - one targeting gamers/enthusiasts, and another targeting the demographic that buys Xeon W processors, including the W-3175X. The gamer/enthusiast-targeted processor line could feature a monolithic 4-channel DDR4 memory interface, and 64 PCI-Express gen 4.0 lanes from the processor socket, and additional lanes from the chipset; while the workstation-targeted processor line could essentially be EPYCs, with a wider memory bus width and more platform PCIe lanes; while retaining drop-in backwards-compatibility with AMD X399 (at the cost of physically narrower memory and PCIe I/O). To support this diverse line of processors, AMD is coming up with not one, but three new chipsets: TRX40, TRX80, and WRX80. The TRX40 could have a lighter I/O feature-set (similar to the X570), and probably 4-channel memory on the motherboards. The TRX80 and WRX80 could leverage the full I/O of the "Rome" MCM, with 8-channel memory and more than 64 PCIe lanes.

Porting DirectX 12 games to Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Aug,28 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has released a new set of official resources to help game devs port their DirectX 12-based games onto the Windows 7 operating system. Most notably this means that it will be possible to get Nvidia-supported DirectX Raytracing (DXR) games running on the older OS. To some Windows 10 users that might seem entirely unnecessary – after all Windows 7 is an operating system that’s two generations behind – but with a 32% overall market share there are still a whole lot of Win7 users, and not far behind the percentage of people running the latest version of Microsoft’s OS on their PC. And that means a lot of potential gamers are being locked out of running all those DX12-based games.

Synced Off-Planet Performance with Geforce RTX 2080 Ti - tech
(hx) 05:28 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
PCGamesHardware have shared a video, showing the ray tracing effects of SYNCED: Off-Planet. SYNCED: Off-Planet is a game that is heavily inspired by The Division, and its Gamescom 2019 demo had major performance issues even on NVIDIA’s most powerful gaming GPU, the RTX2080Ti. PCGamesHardware used FRAPS in order to record the game’s performance. As we can clearly see, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX2080Ti was struggling to keep 50-60fps. In some scenes, there were even drops below 45fps, something that is really disappointing.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.8.1 WHQL Drivers - tech
(hx) 02:21 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment
AMD late-Tuesday silently posted a WHQL-signed version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.8.1 drivers that it originally released as a Beta on August 12. The new 19.8.1 WHQL drivers, released on 20th August, are the first proper WHQL drivers since AMD's Radeon RX 5700-series launch. Besides WHQL, the underlying code is identical to 19.8.1 Beta, and hence the changelog is untouched. TechPowerUp confirmed with AMD that there are no underlying code changes, and that WHQL signing is the only change. Adrenalin 19.8.1 adds Microsoft PlayReady 3.0 DRM standard compliance to Radeon RX 5700-series GPUs.
NVIDIA Fixes GeForce 436.02 Installer - tech
(hx) 02:18 PM CEST - Aug,22 2019 - Post a comment
NVIDIA yesterday posted its much publicized GeForce 436.02 WHQL Gamescom Special graphics drivers that brought about performance improvements across a spectrum of games, and added new features such as low-latency input (akin to AMD Radeon Anti-Lag), and beat Intel to Integer Upscaling. The installer that brought all these goodies to you, however, was buggy, as NVIDIA admitted. It originally installed GeForce Experience regardless of obtaining GDPR-mandated user-consent, and made deselecting the application in the "Custom Install" components list impossible. Later in the evening, NVIDIA temporarily pulled the driver from the Downloads section of its website, and hours later, re-uploaded the drivers with an installer that fixes this bug. The driver version number remains the same, all that's changed is an "-rp" suffix in the installer binary's file-name (eg: "436.02-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql-rp.exe").

WD announces a 12TB external HDD - tech
(hx) 09:15 PM CEST - Aug,20 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
For gamers who regularly have to delete old games to make space for newer ones in their limited capacity consoles, Western Digital has now announced five models under the "WD Black" line-up of external gaming hard drives to take care of those worries. These drives range in capacity from a 500GB P50 Game Drive SSD to a 12TB D10 Game Drive for Xbox One that can store up to 300 games to make for an impressive library of titles, which showing off would probably be as much fun as playing. Jared Peck, WD's Senior Product Manager in an interview with GamesBeat, said that people often don't play games citing their fully stuffed console storage in what the company has identified as one of the pain points in its survey. It mentions 45% of gamers who'd be buying a storage device in the next year and 41% of PC gamers who'll definitely be getting more storage. There's also a double-digit figure for console owners who are already attaching external storage to their consoles, reports VentureBeat.
  • WD Black P50 Game Drive SSD (500GB $180, 1TB $250, 2TB $500) - This aluminum drive comes with a 20 Gbps Superspeed USB over Type-C (only drive in the line-up with this connector, rest have Micro-B) for transfer speeds of up to 1,980MB/s. It has a five-year warranty with shipment expected later this year.
  • WD Black P10 Game Drive (2TB $90, 4TB $130, 5TB $150) - This drive has 140MB/s transfer speeds for the 2TB version while the 4TB and 5TB versions have 130MB/s. The latter variant can store 125 games coming in at roughly 40GB each. It also supports Superspeed USB 5GB/s connectivity, comes with a three-year warranty and ships this month.
  • WD Black P10 Game Drive for Xbox One (3TB $100, 5TB $150) - This drive comes with a two-month free subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, features USB 3.2 Gen 1 and transfer speeds of 130MB/s. It has a three-year warranty and ships this month.
  • WD Black D10 Game Drive (8TB $200) - With space for up to 200 games, this 7200 RPM drive has a faster 250MB/s transfer speed. It features active cooling and has an external power supply that also has two 7.5W charging ports for your devices. It has a three-year warranty and ships in September.
  • WD Black D10 Game Drive for Xbox One (8TB $200, 12TB $300) - The most capacious offering in this model weighs a rather hefty 0.96kg that's capable of storing 300 games. The ample storage can be put to good use with the three-month free subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offered with this drive. Spinning at 7200 RPM, it can transfer data at 250MB/s and like the standard D10, there's an external power supply with two 7.5W charging ports.
