Microsoft's Surface Duo spotted in the wild - tech
(hx) 07:27 PM CET - Feb,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft's upcoming dual-screen Android phone, the Surface Duo, is getting ready for prime time. A couple of days ago, Israel Rodriguez spotted one in use on Vancouver's SkyTrain, tweeting an image that shows what appears to be a flash next to the front-facing camera. But as promised, there's more. In fact, there's a lot more. Rodriguez tweeted out a link to a YouTube video that includes several photos and some video footage, although there's no sound. It shows various use cases, such as playing games, checking email, using the device in various form factors, and more.

Other than the fact that the Surface Duo runs Android, comes with two 5.6-inch displays, and will be out Holiday 2020, we know next to nothing about the device. Microsoft hasn't said a word about any of the internal specs like the SoC, RAM, or battery life of the strikingly thin device, and we have no idea how much the device will cost. Surface devices are usually high-end, but when it comes to foldable smartphones, "high-end" can mean anywhere from $1,000 to $2,700. Microsoft isn't shelling out for one of those expensive, high-tech flexible OLED displays, but it does have twice as many displays as normal, and they are in a weird aspect ratio to boot.

Apple Finally Buying AMD CPUs? - tech
(hx) 10:59 PM CET - Feb,07 2020 - Post a comment
Since its switch to the x86 machine architecture from PowerPC in the mid-2000s, Apple has been consistent with Intel as its sole supplier of CPUs for its Macbooks, iMac desktops, and Mac Pro workstations. The company's relationship with rival AMD has been limited to sourcing discrete GPUs. If pieces of code from a MacOS beta is anything to go buy, Apple could bite the AMD bullet very soon. References to several AMD processors were found in MacOS 10.15.4 Beta 1. These include the company's "Picasso," "Renoir," and "Van Gogh" APUs. It's very likely that with increasing CPU IPC and energy-efficiency, Apple is finally seeing the value in single-chip solutions from AMD that have a good enough combination of CPU and iGPUs. The 7 nm "Renoir" silicon in particular could change the mobile and desktop computing segments, thanks to its 8-core "Zen 2" CPU, and a "Vega" based iGPU that's highly capable in non-gaming and light-gaming tasks. AMD's proprietary SmartShift feature could also be leveraged, which dynamically switches between the iGPU and an AMD discrete GPU.

NVIDIA's GeForce Now Service is Launched - tech
(hx) 10:06 AM CET - Feb,05 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
After years in public beta, the company’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service is officially launching today with both free and paid tiers. GeForce Now officially supports around 400 games, which you can find via the service’s search bar. That tally includes most of the more popular titles being played today, and Nvidia says it adds four or five new games every week or so. PUBG, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 3, Dishonored 2, XCOM 2, and many, many more triple-A games work with GeForce Now, as do indie gems like Battletech, Stardew Valley, and Disco Elysium. The service doesn’t come with any games, but will run those you buy (or have bought) on Steam, Epic, Uplay or Battle.net — note that Origin, GoG, Microsoft Store and other launchers are not presently supported.

As of today, any user on the Internet can register and take advantage of the free edition, which allows you to connect to the cloud service for up to an hour per session. If you sign up for the Founder’s membership, which costs $4.99 per month, you can play for up to 6 six hours in a row and you’ll get priority access to the servers. The first three months of a Founder’s plan are free so there’s no reason right now to go with the free tier.

System requirements for NVIDIA's GeForce Now are as stands:
- 15 Mbps internet connection (25 Mbps recommended). A 5 GHz network is preferred if using wireless.
- Any Windows PC running Windows 7 (64-bit) or higher, 4 GB of system memory, a 2.0 GHz dual-core X86 CPU or higher and a GPU that supports DirectX 11.
- Any Mac with macOS 10.10 or higher.
- Any Nvidia Shield TV (2015, 2017, 2019; Base and Pro models).
- Any Android phone running Android 5.0 (L) or higher and 2 GB of system memory.
- A Bluetooth gamepad is strongly recommended, including the Shield controller, Razer Raiju and Junglecat Mobile, or Steelseries Stratus Duo.
The minimum hardware requirements for GeForce Now are so low that you can run it on even the cheapest Windows computer. To run on a PC, you need any dual-core or better CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a GPU that can handle DirectX 11, which even low-end, integrated graphics processors support. You can also run the cloud gaming service on Macs that date back as far as 2009 or on Android devices. To play on your TV, you can use one of Nvidia’s own Android-powered Shield set-top boxes. The one catch (which applies to all cloud streaming services) is that you need a stable Internet connection that’s at least 15 Mbps, which operates over either Wi-Fi 5 (aka 802.11ac) or higher wireless, or Ethernet. The service is unlikely to work well over 4G and you need to have really good Wi-Fi coverage.

Antivirus Providers Continue Supporting Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 06:58 PM CET - Jan,31 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Despite Microsoft ending Windows 7 support on January the 14th and declaring it End-Of-Life (EOL), most of the antivirus providers are still providing their services to Windows 7 users. With a large portion of the users unable to switch to the newer and supported OS versions like Windows 10, antivirus providers see a good opportunity to gain new customers that want to protect their PCs from the possible threats. Thanks to the AV-Test report we have a list of antivirus providers that are going to support Windows 7, and it includes all of the big players with a plan to support their software on Windows 7 until 2022. So some of the Windows 7 users unable to upgrade to the newer OS are going to be at least semi-protected against possible vulnerabilities, with exception of course for those found in OS level. When it comes to the number one source of the threats, the browser, there is some good news there as well. Google plans to support its Chrome browser to at least July 2021, while Mozilla declared no official information about their support plans, however, if they behave as they did with Windows XP and its support ending, your Firefox browser will likely get some more mileage out of it.

Intel 400-series Chipset Mobos to Lack PCIe Gen 4.0 - tech
(hx) 12:20 PM CET - Jan,27 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Intel's upcoming 400-series desktop chipset will lack support for PCI-Express gen 4.0. The motherboards will stick to gen 3.0 for both the main x16 PEG slots wired to the LGA1200 socket, and general purpose PCIe lanes from the PCH, according to a Tom's Hardware report. It was earlier expected that 400-series chipset motherboards will come with preparation for PCIe gen 4.0, so even if the upcoming 10th gen "Comet Lake" desktop processors lacked gen 4.0 root-complexes, the boards would be fully ready for the new bus standard in 11th gen "Rocket Lake" desktop processors.

10th gen "Comet Lake" desktop processors are built on 14 nm process, and implement Intel's current-gen CPU core design Intel has been implementing since 6th gen "Skylake." It's only with 11th gen "Rocket Lake" that the mainstream desktop platform could see a new CPU core design, with the company reportedly back-porting "Willow Cove" CPU cores to the 14 nm process. "Rocket Lake" is also expected to feature a small Gen12 iGPU with 32 execution units, and a new-gen uncore component that implements PCIe gen 4.0. PCIe gen 4.0 doubles bandwidth over gen 3.0, and while only a handful GPUs support it, the standard is made popular by a new generation of M.2 NVMe SSDs that are able to utilize the added bandwidth to push sequential transfer rates beyond M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 limitations.

In other news,Intel has delayed the launch of 10th gen Core desktop processors and 400-series chipset motherboards to Q2-2020, to as early as April.

Here's Why Windows 7 Is Nuking Your Background Image - tech
(hx) 07:37 PM CET - Jan,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
A recent security update appears to be messing with some Windows 7 PCs by replacing the custom background image with an all-black wallpaper. The timing of the mishap comes on the heels of Windows 7 officially entering retirement, leading to speculation that Microsoft is petty towards people who refuse to upgrade their OS to Windows 10. That is not necessarily what is happening, though. Reports of the black wallpaper issue are popping up in various places on the web, including over at Reddit and on Microsoft's own support forum.
After KB4534310 installed, every boot-up replaces my graphic wallpaper with a black solid color. I've tried creating a new theme, tried renaming transcodedwallpaper.jpg to .old, but although these changes allow me to restore my graphic wallpaper, after restarting, the desktop wallpaper is black again. Icons and start bar color are unaffected. The only solution was to uninstall the update. But now my PC is less secure. Microsoft, please fix this!
The issue is indeed related to KB4534310, and appears to be a bug rather than a crummy attempt to annoy users into upgrading to Windows 10. Users discovered the actual culprit is the Stretch setting in the Desktop Background options menu. This allows users to stretch an image to fit the entire screen, but for whatever reason, KB453410 broke the functionality. Unfortunately, it's not yet clear if Microsoft will fix the issue, since it is no longer supporting Windows 7. We hope it does, because it's a bad look to break something with a final update and then essentially tell users, 'Too bad!'.

Fortunately, there are a couple of workarounds. One is to uninstall the KB4534310 update, though I don't suggest going that route. The other is a clever trick. Since the stretch option is borked right now, you can take a screenshot of of your desktop with the image stretched out, and then use that resulting image as your background without the stretch option enabled.
  • Go into the Desktop Background settings and select the Fill option to restore your custom image, then select Stretch again. It will stretch the image as normal until your reboot your PC, at which point it is replaced by a black wallpaper. So don't reboot after doing this. Save the changes.
  • Right-click on your desktop, select View, uncheck Show Desktop icons, and select Show Desktop Gadgets.
  • Exit all windows and hit the Print Screen key to take a screenshot. Using your image editing program of choice (MS Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever), save your screenshot.
  • Go into the Desktop Background settings and use your saved image as the new background. In the position setting, select Center. You can now safely reboot your PC without having the background revert to a black wallpaper.
  • Right-click on your desktop, select View, and re-enable Show Desktop icons.

AMD Posts Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.1.3 - tech
(hx) 07:53 PM CET - Jan,21 2020 - Post a comment
AMD today released Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.1.3 beta drivers. These drivers add support for the new Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card that's hitting the shelves today; in addition to fixing a handful issues. To begin with, the drivers address a display signal loss noticed when performing parallel actions such as web browsing, gaming or watching video. Game crashes related to Nioh, Dragon Quest Builders 2, WWE 2K20, Dead or Alive 6 and Atelier Ryza were fixed. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus now appears correctly in Radeon Software. Text overflow in some UI elements have been fixed. Loss of fan-tuning settings when switching between available GPUs has been fixed. Another kind of intermittent black screen on desktop idling for extended periods has been fixed.

Fixed Issues

  • An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when performing parallel actions such as web browsing, gaming or watching video.
  • A limited number of games such as Nioh™, Dragon Quest Builders 2™, WWE™2K20, Dead or Alive 6™ and Atelier Ryza™ may crash or fail to launch.
  • Wolfenstein™ 2: The New Colossus is not detected in Radeon Software games manager.
  • Text overflow in some UI boxes or toast messages may be experienced in some language localizations.
  • Fan Tuning may change back to the default state when switching between available GPUs.
  • Copy text options are not available in the display specs table for Radeon Software.
  • An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when the system is left idle at desktop.
  • Factory Reset install may keep previously configured Radeon Software game profiles. This can cause mismatch between global graphics settings and per profile settings.

GeForce RTX 3080 / RTX 3070 'Ampere' Graphics Cards Detailed? - tech
(hx) 07:59 PM CET - Jan,20 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
On January 17, a Twitter user ‘KittyCorgi’ shares initial information about two GPUs: Ampere GA103 and GA104. The former GPU is supposedly associated with a higher-end GPU while the latter is likely for RTX 3070 series. According to the rumor, GA103 GPU would supposedly feature 60 SMs (Streaming Multiprocessors “Ampere”) while GA104 would end up with 48. The weird naming convention (103) is something we do no fully understand, NVIDIA does not use uneven numbers for high-end GPUs. The original source also shared die diagrams for GA103 and GA104, they look professional but they are not as detailed as Turing diagrams, hence we put a strong doubt on their credibility.

If this data is to be believed then RTX 3080 could get GA103 GPU, while GA104 would end up in RTX 3070. This is the same approach as we had for the original Turing series where RTX 2080 received the TU104 processor and 2070 was based on smaller TU106 silicon. Of course, this has changed for the SUPER series where both SKUs feature TU104. The rumor also mentions a 320-bit bus for RTX 3080, which would allow 10/20GB memory configuration. This is also very uncommon for NVIDIA and probably just as hard to believe.

NVIDIA has never confirmed Ampere as their next-generation architecture for the GeForce series. It is only present in multiple publications and leaks from foundries. For now, all we know is that the next-architecture could also be called Hopper. We actually expect NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang to present a new roadmap at GTC 2020, which starts on March 22nd.

NVIDIA GeForce 442.01 Hotfix Driver - tech
(hx) 03:41 PM CET - Jan,17 2020 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released a new hotfix driver for its graphics cards. The NVIDIA GeForce 442.01 Hotfix Driver resolves issues with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare & The Witcher 3. As such, and only if you encounter glitches in these two games, you can go ahead and download it. Going into more details, this driver fixes an issue with COD: MW that could cause the streaming of gameplay using StreamLabs OBS to stop. It also resolves a crash when a user reaches a specific cut scene in The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine DLC. Furthermore, it addresses an issue that could cause minor stuttering when using NVIDIA SLI in combination with G-SYNC.

NVIDIA GeForce 442.01 Hotfix Driver Release Notes

  • [Call of Duty Modern Warfare] Streaming of gameplay using StreamLabs OBS will randomly stop
  • [The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine] Game may crash when a user reaches a specific cut scene
  • [SLI+G-SYNC Stutter] User may experience minor stuttering when using NVIDIA SLI in combination with G-SYNC.
NVIDIA Formally Cuts Prices of GeForce RTX 2060 to $299 - tech
(hx) 08:16 AM CET - Jan,17 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
When EVGA brought the $299 GeForce RTX 2060 KO graphics card to CES, we knew they couldn't pull it off without NVIDIA's blessings. With AMD claiming that its upcoming $279 Radeon RX 5600 XT outclassing the entire GeForce GTX 1660-series, including the GTX 1660 Super and range-topping GTX 1660 Ti, NVIDIA had to do something, and that something is a formal price-cut on its GeForce RTX 2060 down to USD $299.

When it launched a year ago in January 2019, the GeForce RTX 2060 commanded a $349 price-point, which was largely unfazed by AMD's introduction of the Radeon RX 5700 at the same price. The RX 5700 is faster than the RTX 2060, but NVIDIA probably counted on ray-tracing to sell the card. The new RX 5600 XT changes the landscape dramatically, if AMD's performance claims hold true. The entire GTX 16-series is outclassed at a sub-$300 price matching that of the top GTX 1660 Ti part, and there's no ray-tracing hardware to bail them out, either. NVIDIA could cut prices, but those would pancake the already cluttered product-stack. The only other option (which NVIDIA took), was to cut prices of the RTX 2060. It remains to be seen what AMD's next move is. With the RX 5700-series, it pulled off a last-minute price-cut ahead of launch.

Microsoft's Windows 7 Reaches End-Of-Life - tech
(hx) 10:51 PM CET - Jan,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Today, on January the 14th, Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 7 operating system. After more than 10 years since its launch, Windows 7 has remained a primary operating system on many PCs, especially OEM PCs manufactured before 2015, when Windows 10 came out. The user transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10 has not been an easy task for Microsoft, however, by declaring that the product has reached End-Of-Life, Microsoft is trying to make millions of users pull the trigger and embrace the new operating system.

When January 14th arrives, Microsoft will stop giving Windows 7 users technical support, software updates with new features, and most importantly security updates. The official recommendation from Microsoft is to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, meaning Windows 10. As some of the older PCs may have compatibility issues with newer OS, it is also recommended to check your PC specifications. If you are a customer of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, you will continue to see further support in the future, however, for regular users, the support period is over.
Microsoft will support Edge on Windows 7 for at least 18 months - tech
(hx) 12:04 AM CET - Jan,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
It's not a secret that the end of extended support for Windows 7 is tomorrow, and with Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge shipping for the unsupported OS the day after, there are questions about how long the browser will be supported. Google announced last week that it's committing to 18 months of support for Chrome on Windows 7, which means that Chromium is supported for as long. Today, Microsoft confirmed that it will commit to the same timeframe as Google. That means that you'll get Edge updates on Windows 7 until at least July 15, 2021. It's likely that the company will go beyond that. Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for businesses on Windows 7 that are willing to pay up, and ESUs are available for a total of three years. Given that the Redmond firm is committed to providing Windows 7 support, even to only some users, for another three years, it seems likely that it would support the browser for as long. Of course, that also depends on Chromium support.

Google to support Chrome on Windows 7 until at least mid-2021 - tech
(hx) 10:01 AM CET - Jan,11 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
As of this Tuesday, Microsoft's Windows 7 will no longer be supported. Of course, that still leaves questions about what will be available in terms of third-party apps, such as the most popular web browser in the world, Google Chrome. Yesterday, Google announced its plan. The Mountain View firm will still support its browser on the legacy OS for at least 18 months after Microsoft's end-of-life date. That means that Chrome will still get updates, and not just security updates, until July 15, 2021 at the earliest. This is an announcement that many have been waiting for, including fans of Microsoft's new Chromium-based Edge browser. With Chrome being fully supported with new feature updates on Windows 7, that means that the open-source Chromium is still supported as well, so Microsoft is likely to continue supporting Edge for as long.
We have enterprises covered, even if they haven’t yet made the full move to Windows 10. We will continue to fully support Chrome on Windows 7 for a minimum of 18 months from Microsoft’s End of Life date, until at least July 15, 2021. So if you haven’t started your move to Windows 10 yet, or even if your organization is mid-way through migration, you can still benefit from the enterprise capabilities of Chrome.

Intel Unveils Xe DG1-SDV Graphics Card - tech
(hx) 12:38 AM CET - Jan,10 2020 - Post a comment
The DG1-SDV is able to play games at 1080p, even if they are technically lightweight titles like "Warframe," and aren't maxing out settings. The SDV is a 15.2 cm-long graphics card that relies on the PCI-Express slot for power entirely (and hence pulling less than 75 W). We already know from Intel's Xe slides since 2019 that the Xe architecture is designed to be extremely scalable, with a single ISA scaling all the way from iGPUs to tiny discrete GPUs like the DG1-SDV, and scaling all the way up to double-digit TFLOP-scale compute processors for the HPCs. Along the way, though, Intel intends to compete in the gaming and client-graphics space by developing products at just the right scale of the Xe architecture, with just the right performance/Watt to compete with specific products from the NVIDIA-AMD duopoly. Forget the high-end for a moment. If Intel is able to match even the GTX 1650 and RX 5500 (or their future $150 successors) in performance and power, they end up tapping into a double-digit percentage of the client-graphics TAM, and that spells trouble for Santa Clara and Markham. The Xe DG1 is backed by Intel's robust software stack, which has seen breakneck development and feature-additions in recent times, such as a modern Control Center app, support for modern technologies such as variable-rate shading, integer scaling, etc. Intel has, for over a decade, established a foothold in the client media-acceleration space with its Quick Sync video encoders, and Xe only dials that a notch. The DG1 features Intel's entire media-acceleration and display-controller feature-set. Intel is also designing Xe to be extremely configurable by OEMs, to make the GPU finely-match their product's thermal and power targets.

The Xe DG1-SDV (software development vehicle) is a contraption that's more evolved than "working prototype," and stops short of being a production product. It is designed to to be stable and durable enough for its target audience: ISVs, individual software developers, and systems engineers evaluating the thing for major hardware OEMs. The card has the exact same physical dimensions as the Radeon R9 Nano, and fits into any machine that has two full-height expansion slots and a PCI-Express x16 interface, no additional power cables needed. A single fan cools an aluminium fin-stack heatsink underneath. Throughout the demo, the cooler was more than audible and in need of acoustic optimization. The cooler shroud and back-plate bear a futuristic silvery design, there's also a row of LEDs near the I/O shield that put out light into the grooves of the shroud.

Elgato 4K 60 S+ is an External Capture Card that Doesn't Require a PC - tech
(hx) 12:29 AM CET - Jan,07 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Capturing high-quality gameplay footage is about to get much easier. During CES today, the Elgato 4K 60 S+ external capture card was revealed, allowing you to record in 4K HDR at 60 fps from your PC, PS4, and Xbox One. While this isn’t the first time Elgato offered a card that records in 4K HDR at 60 fps (check out the Elgato 4K60 Pro), the 4K 60 S+ will not require a PC to begin recording. All you have to do is plug the standalone unit, insert an SD card, and hit record. This will allow you to get quality footage similar to the internal cards Elgato offers, but with the accessibility of the external cards, like the HD60 S+. The upcoming capture card’s ease of use is certainly a game-changer, however, hooking up the 4K 60 S+ to a PC gives you a bit more options, mostly with live streaming. Along with the ability to live stream, you will also have access to Elgato’s recording and streaming software. This unlocks several features that wouldn’t be available if you just recorded footage directly to an SD card, including Live Commentary. The Elgato 4K 60 S+ is set to release in Q1 2020 for $399.99. In terms of external capture cards, there are other options that don’t have a steep price, but don’t offer the same visual quality. In terms of Elgato’s offerings, the step below the newly announced capture card is the HD60 S+, which allows you to capture in 1080p at 60 fps. The other downside is you do need a PC in order to record footage or live stream.

NVIDIA GeForce v441.87 CES Game Ready Driver - tech
(hx) 09:09 PM CET - Jan,06 2020 - Post a comment / read (15)
NVIDIA has released a new major driver for its graphics cards. According to the release, the NVIDIA GeForce 441.87 WHQL driver (changelog), also known as CES 2020 driver, adds official support for Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s real-time ray tracing effects. MachineGames will release the RTX patch for Wolfenstein: Youngblood later this week.
Max Frame Rate: Cap Frame Rates, Save Power, and More
You asked for it - the number one community requested feature is here!

Now, you can set the max frame rate for a 3D application or game. This feature is particularly helpful when trying to save power, reduce system latency, or keep within a specific Variable Refresh Rate range on a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display.
  • Saving Power: Enable Max Frame Rate (NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Max Frame Rate) and set your power management mode to "Optimal Power"(NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Power Management Mode). While in this mode, GPU frequency is reduced and uses less power. For laptop users, Max Frame Rate also works alongside with Battery Boost and Whisper Mode. If either of these modes are enabled at the same time as Max Frame Rate, the NVIDIA Control Panel will cap the framerate to the lowest of the limits.
  • Reducing System Latency: Enable Max Frame Rate and set your power management mode to "Prefer maximum performance" to reduce latency. While in this mode, the GPU is kept at higher frequencies to process frames as quickly as possible. To maximize latency reduction in GPU bound scenarios where FPS is consistent, set Max Frame Rate to a framerate slightly below the average FPS and turn Low Latency Mode to Ultra.
  • Staying in VRR Range: Set the Max Frame Rate slightly below the maximum refresh rate of your display to stay within the Variable Refresh Rate range - providing a no-tear, low system latency experience! For the smoothest, no tear experience, set the low latency mode to Ultra and turn VSYNC on.
Variable Rate Supersampling: Improve Image Quality In VR
Variable Rate Supersampling (VRSS) is a new technique to improve image quality in VR games. It uses NVIDIA Variable Rate Shading (VRS), a key feature in NVIDIA's Turing architecture, to dynamically apply up to 8x supersampling to the center of the VR headset display, where the eye is generally focused. It intelligently applies supersampling only when GPU headroom is available in order to maintain the VR headset's fixed FPS and ensure a smooth VR experience.

Compared to alternative techniques that supersample the entire screen with large hits to frame rate, VRSS's adaptive use of Variable Rate Shading boosts image quality while staying about the typical 90Hz fixed refresh rate of the VR headset. In the VR game Boneworks, VRSS keeps FPS above 90, whereas a fullscreen 4x supersample drops frame rates to unplayable levels.

To enable VRSS, open the NVIDIA Control Panel and select Manage 3D Settings, then scroll to Virtual Reality - Variable Rate Supersampling, and change the setting to "Adaptive".

For advanced users, the Control Panel also offers an 'Always On' setting that applies up to 8x supersampling regardless of performance. Note, this may bring your frame rate below the VR headset's refresh rate and impact your experience.

VRSS is supported by the driver--no game integration required--and can be applied to DX11 VR games or application that have forward renderers and support MSAA, and have been tested by NVIDIA. At the time of writing, over 20 games meet this criteria.

New Freestyle Splitscreen Filter To Showcase Your Creations
In over 700 games, you can press Alt+F3 to load NVIDIA Freestyle, a GeForce Experience feature that enables you to adjust the look and feel of your gameplay in real-time using post-process filters. And in any game with NVIDIA Ansel support, you can press Alt+F2 to frame and snap in-game photos with an incredible level of visual customization.

With our latest Game Ready Driver, we're releasing a new Splitscreen filter that allows you to showcase screenshots or videos of your creation with the modding community. You can split the screen, showcase a side-by-side comparison, or even blend filters using the gradient function.

You can also import hundreds of new customization filters from ReShade. Download our collection of curated ReShade filters, and extract into "Program FilesNVIDIA CorporationAnselCustom" (typically on your C: drive). If you install DCH drivers, instead of the standard Game Ready Driver, you may have to create this folder yourself. A larger selection of 'custom' filters can also be downloaded directly from ReShade's Github repository.

Image Sharpening Update Further Improves Your Experience
We recently introduced a standalone image sharpening filter built into the NVIDIA Control Panel, enabling you to improve image clarity in all DirectX 9-12, Vulkan and OpenGL games. Based on your feedback, now you can separately enable the GPU Scaling feature without image sharpening. Furthermore, custom resolutions are supported when you enable GPU Scaling.

To use image sharpening on your system, open the NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings, select Image Sharpening, configure your options, hit OK, then click Apply on the bottom right of the Control Panel window.

Support For Newly Validated G-SYNC Compatible Displays

NVIDIA's Next-Generation Ampere GPUs to be 50% Faster than Turing - tech
(hx) 05:07 PM CET - Jan,03 2020 - Post a comment / read (8)
As we approach the release of NVIDIA's Ampere GPUs, which are rumored to launch in the second half of this year, more rumors and information about the upcoming graphics cards are appearing. Today, according to the latest report made by Taipei Times, NVIDIA's next-generation of graphics cards based on "Ampere" architecture is rumored to have as much as 50% performance uplift compared to the previous generations of Turing GPUs, while using having half the power consumption.

Built using TSMC's 7 nm manufacturing node, Ampere is poised to be the new king among all future GPUs. The rumored 50% performance increase is not impossible, due to features and improvements that the new 7 nm manufacturing node brings. If utilizing the density alone, NVIDIA can extract at least 50% extra performance that is due to the use of a smaller node. However, performance should increase even further because Ampere will bring new architecture as well. Combining a new manufacturing node and new microarchitecture, Ampere will reduce power consumption in half, making for a very efficient GPU solution. We still don't know if the performance will increase mostly for ray tracing applications, or will NVIDIA put the focus on general graphics performance.

NAND Flash Prices to Rise up to 40% in 2020 - tech
(hx) 07:48 PM CET - Jan,02 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
According to the sources over at DigiTimes, NAND flash prices are set to rise by up to 40% in 2020. This report is coming from sources over at memory chipmakers, presumably some of the biggest players like SK Hynix, Micron, and Samsung. If the prediction realizes, consumers will see a significant price jump for products based on NAND flash memory like most of today's solid-state drives. This incident alone could help contribute to the price rise of NAND memory in 2020. Other possible reasons may include an inefficient supply of materials used by NAND flash production lines or a simple supply-demand ratio, which would hurt prices of NAND flash long-therm. However, we hope that the underlying problems for this predicted price rise can be worked out and that companies like Samsung, which got power outage accident, can supplement the capacity loss during the unplanned turn of events.

Extended Security Updates will extend to 2023 for MSE on Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 07:33 PM CET - Dec,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
I reported earlier this month that Windows 7 users will begin seeing notifications warning that Windows 7 is no longer supported. These notifications state that, after January 14, 2020, Windows 7 will no longer receive software or security updates. That said, I also reported that those with Extended Security Updates (ESU) will not receive these notifications, as they will continue to receive updates to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). ESU is a paid service intended for enterprise customers, though a software bypass tool has been created that enables ESU for free. However, there was some question as to whether ESU actually would provide continued security updates, as the FAQ for ESU seemed to contradict this idea. It stated, “No, your Windows 7 computer is not protected by MSE after January 14, 2020. MSE is unique to Windows 7 and follows the same lifecycle dates for support.” Woody Leonhard from Computerworld asked for for clarification on this issue in a recent AMA. Fortunately, Mike Cure, a Microsoft engineer answered:
MSE will continue to receive signature updates after Jan. 14.
The FAQ has since been updated to clear up the confusion. Those with ESU will continue to receive signature updates to MSE until 2023.
Intel 10th Gen Core 'Comet Lake' Lineup and Specs - tech
(hx) 10:33 AM CET - Dec,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (4)
Ahead of a possible reveal in the sidelines of CES, followed by an early-Q2 2020 product-launch, company slides detailing Intel's 10th generation Core desktop processors in the LGA1200 package, codenamed "Comet Lake-S," leaked to the web courtesy Informatica Cero. They confirm that HyperThreading will play a key role, with Intel enabling it across the lineup. The range-topping Core i9 series will be 10-core/20-thread along with 20 MB of L3 cache. The Core i7 series will be 8-core/16-thread, along with 16 MB L3 cache. The all-important Core i5 series will be 6-core/12-thread, equipped with 12 MB of L3 cache. The Core i3 series will have two sub-tiers: i3-103xx series with 4-core/8-thread and 8 MB L3 cache; and i3-101xx series 4-core/8-thread with 6 MB L3 cache.

The Core i7 and Core i9 "Comet Lake" chips will feature native support for dual-channel DDR4-2933, while the Core i5 and Core i3 will make do with native DDR4-2667 support (memory overclocking possible). Besides core/thread counts, and cache size increases, Intel will dial up clock speeds across the board by as much as 300 MHz per SKU (vs. their 9th gen predecessor), and introduce Turbo Boost Max 3.0, which has been exclusive to its HEDT processors. The introduction of Turbo Boost Max 3.0 could also bring about modern favored-core capability (benefiting Windows 10 1909 and later). The classic Turbo Boost is also available. There's also a mysterious new feature called "Thermal Velocity Boost," with its own set of clock-speeds depending on core/thread load. The chips could also feature Modern Standby C10 power-state support (first to the desktop platform). Intel is said to have also added several new core and memory overclocking features on the K-SKUs.

Built on a 14 nm-class silicon fabrication node, and featuring the same IPC as "Skylake," the 10th generation Core "Comet Lake" series will rely on aggressive power-management to sustain 65 W TDP rating for most SKUs, but Intel's virtual barrier for 95 W as the TDP number for unlocked K SKUs ends with the 10 generation (the i9-9900KS already breaks that). The 10th generation Core K SKUs have a scorching 125 W TDP rating not just for the 10-core i9-10900K and 8-core i7-10700K, but also the 6-core i5-10600K.
Nvidia claims RTX 2080 Max-Q is faster than PS5, Xbox Series X - tech
(hx) 10:17 AM CET - Dec,30 2019 - Post a comment / read (2)
At the GTC China 2019 conference, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang compared a Maxwell 980M-equipped Lenovo Y900 with a Lenovo Y740, powered by an RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU. The presentation showcased how Max-Q technology enabled substantially thinner, lighter, and longer-lasting laptops to perform much faster than earlier models. The 980M obviously didn't look that great in the comparison. However, the real eyebrow-raiser was a slide that then claimed that the 2080 Max-Q was faster than the upcoming ninth-gen consoles' GPUs. The Xbox Series X and PS5 are set to be powered by GPUs that use AMD's RDNA architecture. Nvidia's claim that the 2080 Max-Q is faster raises questions about the expected performance of the consoles. The evidence so far points to the ninth-gen consoles having GPUs that are at least as fast, if not faster, than the RX 5700 XT.
