New GeForce 445.75 Game Ready Drivers - tech
(hx) 06:43 PM CET - Mar,23 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
NVIDIA today announced its new Deep Learning Supersampling 2.0 (DLSS 2.0) performance enhancement feature, being distributed through the new GeForce 445.75 Game Ready drivers. DLSS 2.0 is NVIDIA's second attempt at a holy grail of performance boost at acceptable levels of quality loss (think what MP3 did to WAV). It works by rendering the 3D scene at a lower resolution than what your display is capable of, and upscaling it with deep-learning reconstructing details using a pre-trained neural network. Perhaps the two biggest differences between DLSS 2.0 and the original DLSS that made its debut with GeForce RTX 20-series in 2018, is the lack of a need for game-specific content for training the DLSS neural net; and implementation of a rendering technique called temporal feedback. In addition to DLSS 2.0, GeForce 445.75 drivers come game-ready for "Half Life: Alyx."

DOOM Eternal - 26 Graphics Cards Compared - tech
(hx) 12:23 PM CET - Mar,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
DOOM Eternal is the long-awaited sequel to the epic DOOM series. There's even more carnage, and gameplay is super fast-paced. Built upon the id Tech 7 engine, visuals are excellent, and graphics performance is outstanding. The chaps over at TechPowerUp have tested the game on all modern graphics cards at Full HD, 1440p and 4K Ultra HD. Here's an excerpt:
DOOM Eternal is powered by id Tech 7, which is id Software's latest iteration of their famous graphics engine. The new version completely removes all OpenGL support and is Vulkan exclusive. This greatly simplifies development as code complexity has gone down and they no longer have to validate every feature for two platforms. DOOM Eternal features proper HDR support, and global illumination capabilities have been enhanced. The engine is now better equipped to handle open-world scenarios, possibly due to the removal of the MegaTexture pipeline. While that tech has given us super-crisp environment details in earlier titles, it was a huge disk space and memory hog.

Graphical fidelity of DOOM at the highest "Ultra Nightmare" setting is "good", maybe even "very good", but I'm not seeing anything that looks "next-gen". Many textures are blurry and some models definitely lack geometry. While the structural level design is amazing, I'd definitely have wished for more love when it comes to floor geometry and textures. It also puzzles me why they gave us six graphics presets yet built them in such a way that high-end hardware will be dishing out super high FPS (which could be traded for better graphics quality). Guess the good thing is that the performance hit from RTX Raytracing will not result in too low FPS. RTX support will be added in a later patch, one of the reasons being that Vulkan Raytracing support has just been released this week and NVIDIA only has had beta drivers out for a few days.

The level of customization for graphics and input settings is certainly high. This yields a lot of granularity in letting you fine-tune the game to your system. You may also adjust field of view and turn off post-processing effects like motion blur and sharpening. Both AMD and NVIDIA have released Game Ready drivers yesterday, which we used for all our testing—good to see that GPU companies got the gamers covered. We also used the public version of DOOM Eternal which includes a day 1 patch.

Hardware requirements are very modest overall—even at the highest setting. For fluid 1080p gaming even a RX 570 or GTX 1060 is sufficient. To achieve 60 FPS at 1440p, a GTX 1660 or RX 580 is enough! Some might say "good optimization"; I'm not denying it, but why not give gamers with the proper hardware the option to crank up the details? Even at 4K requirements are mild; a Radeon RX 5700 or RTX 2060 Super will be able to drive 60 FPS here. DOOM Eternal seems to be a posterchild to show off the improved capabilities of AMD's RDNA architecture, as the Radeon RX 5700 XT beats the Vega-based Radeon VII by quite a big margin at lower resolution. For 1440p and 4K, VRAM requirements are fine. We measured around 7-8 GB, which is something most graphics cards in this segment can handle just fine. At lower resolution, the Ultra Nightmare profile does require 7 GB VRAM, which means cards with 3 GB or 4 GB VRAM will be challenged. The good thing is that our results show no major loss of performance (due to VRAM) for GTX 1060 3 GB and RTX 570 4 GB. What's surprising is that the RX 5500 XT 4 GB is doing much worse than expected. My best guess is that AMD's VRAM management for Navi isn't as refined yet as that for Polaris. What could be a reason is that RX 5500 XT is only physically x8 PCI-Express lanes, which limits the bandwidth between CPU and GPU, whereas the GTX 1060 and RX 570 are x16 lane cards. At least the game doesn't crash when VRAM is exceeded, and continues to run just fine.

Microsoft has just announced DirectX 12 Ultimate; the culmination of the best graphics technology we’ve ever introduced in an unprecedented alignment between PC and Xbox Series X. Moreover, AMD has shared a new tech video, showing DirectX Raytracing 1.1. in action. According to Microsoft, DirectX 12 Ultimate supports all the next generation graphics hardware features. These include DirectX Raytracing, Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders and Sampler Feedback. Thus, DX12 will ensure stellar “future-proof” feature support for next generation games. What’s also important to note is that DX12 Ultimate will not impact game compatibility with existing hardware which does not support the entire breath of DX12 Ultimate features. Therefore, next-generation games which use DX12 Ultimate features will continue to run on non-DX12 Ultimate hardware.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.3.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 04:59 PM CET - Mar,19 2020 - Post a comment
AMD released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition drivers just in time for Asia and ANZ regions to begin "razing hell" with DOOM Eternal. Version 20.3.1 adds day-one optimization for DOOM Eternal, including an up to 5 percent performance improvement with "Ultra Nightmare" graphics settings. Optimization is also added for "Half Life: Alyx" and the Vulkan API mode of "Ghost Recon: Breakpoint." The drivers also add a few Vulkan extensions: VK_EXT_post_depth_coverage (only supported on RDNA or later graphics architectures); VK_KHR_shader_non_semantic_info, VK_EXT_texel_buffer_alignment, and VK_EXT_pipeline_creation_cache_control.
Support For
  • DOOM Eternal
  • Achieve up to 5% better performance playing Doom Eternal (Ultra Nightmare settings) at 1920x1080p on the Radeon RX 5700XT with Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.3.1, versus Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.2.2. RS-333
  • Half-Life : Alyx
  • Ghost Recon Breakpoint: Vulkan API
Added to Vulkan:
  • VK_EXT_post_depth_coverage: This extension indicates support for shader modules that use the SPV_KHR_post_depth_coverage extension. Fragment shaders using the SPV extension can control whether the SampleMask built-in input variable reflects the coverage after the depth and stencil tests are applied. This extension is only supported on AMD RDNA hardware.
  • VK_KHR_shader_non_semantic_info: This extension indicates support for shader modules that use the SPV_KHR_non_semantic_info extension. Shader modules using the SPV extension can include non-semantic instructions that can be safely removed from the module.
  • VK_EXT_texel_buffer_alignment: This extension provides a mechanism to query alignment requirements for uniform and storage texel buffers that cannot be well communicated via minTexelBufferOffsetAlignment.
  • VK_EXT_pipeline_creation_cache_control: This extension provides flags that can be used by an application to inquire about potential high cost that could be incurred during pipeline creation. The information can be obtained prior to carrying out the create operation, which would allow the application to adjust its behavior accordingly.
Fixed Issues
  • Frame skipping or choppy audio may be experienced in videos captured using Radeon ReLive.
  • Some games may experience stutter while using Instant Replay or third-party applications that stream or perform screen capture.
  • Hotkeys may fail to apply to scenes in ReLive scene editor when the scene has a custom name.

Intel Core i5-10400 Pictured and Detailed - tech
(hx) 06:42 PM CET - Mar,09 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Here is the first picture of Intel's upcoming Core i5-10400 processor, based on the company's 10th generation, 14 nm "Comet Lake-S" silicon. With its 10th generation, Intel is looking to bolster its Core i5 desktop processor series by introducing HyperThreading and increased L3 cache to existing price-points. The i5-10400 is hence a 6-core/12-thread processor with 12 MB of shared L3 cache at its disposal, compared to 9th and 8th generation Core i5 desktop chips being 6-core/6-thread with 9 MB of L3 cache. The Core i5-10400 succeeds the popular Core i5-9400/F and its equally popular predecessor, the i5-8400. The iGPU-devoid i5-9400F in particular owed its popularity to Intel pricing it $15-20 less than the standard i5-9400. The upcoming i5-10400 is expected to be priced under the $200 mark, with the i5-10400F being similarly discounted. Both chips feature identical CPU specs: 2.90 GHz nominal clock speeds, up to 4.30 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, and 4.00 GHz all-core Turbo Boost. As the chip lacks an unlocked multiplier, its TDP is reportedly rated at 65 W. The chip will compete with AMD's Ryzen 5 3600 for sub-$200 supremacy. The 10th generation Core desktop processor family is built in the new LGA1200 package, and launches alongside the new Intel 400-series chipset, in April.

Three Unknown NVIDIA GPUs GeekBench Compute Score Leaked - tech
(hx) 10:59 PM CET - Mar,04 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Another NVIDIA graphics card has been discovered in the Geekbench database, this one featuring a total of 124 CUs. This could amount to some 7,936 CUDA cores, should NVIDIA keep the same 64 CUDA cores per CU - though this has changed in the past, as when NVIDIA halved the number of CUDA cores per CU from Pascal to Turing. The 124 CU graphics card is clocked at 1.1 GHz and features 32 GB of HBM2e, delivering a score of 222,377 points in the Geekbench benchmark. We again stress that these can be just engineering samples, with conservative clocks, and that final performance could be even higher.)

When playing older or less demanding titles such as Far Cry New Dawn, the Core i3 did well, but so will the 1600 AF or any other hexa-core or better Ryzen processor.
  • The best portable SSDs you can buy right now - It's not just about how small the device is, how durable it is, or how many gigabytes of storage it has - the speed of a portable SSD can heavily influence your satisfaction with it. SSDs in general promise better read and write speeds than HDDs, so you'll see a general increase if you're going from one to the other. However, not all portable SSDs perform the same - even if they advertise similar maximum speeds.

  • Android 11 Preview Brings New Messaging Notifications and more - Google has released the first Developer Preview of Android 11. The list of features in this version provides a glimpse of what to expect when Android 11 becomes available to consumers later this year. Messaging receives the biggest update, with a new dedicated section of the notifications shade devoted to ongoing conversations. Messaging apps can also use "bubbles" to float a simple messaging thread window above other apps. System permission dialog boxes (for access to location, etc.) now have an "Only this time" option, similar to iOS. Android 11 also adds native support for secure storage and retrieval of verifiable identification documents, such as ISO 18013-5 compliant Mobile Driving Licenses. Call screening apps will now have standardized access to STIR-SHAKEN data, as well as a new screen that appears after each call, "to let users perform actions such as marking a call as spam or adding to contacts.". Also new are better support for pinhole displays, waterfall displays, animated HIEF image files, and low-latency video modes. Developers will benefit from new APIs for machine learning, as well as 5G network status and performance. Android 11 also advances Google's Project Mainline, moving additional components of the OS into modules that are quickly and easily updated via the Google Play Store, instead of requiring a manufacturer-supplied full OS update. The Developer Preview released today is not a "public beta" and is not intended for consumers; it will only run on certain Pixel devices and requires manual installation. Separately, Google announced that Android 11 will enhance Work Profile so that companies issuing company-owned phones to employees can give employees separate work and personal profiles on the same device. Companies still control the work profile and can set device-wide restrictions, but personal data is kept private from the employer. This feature was previously only available for personally-owned devices, not company-issued devices. Google is expected to reveal additional features of Android 11 at its developer conference in May.
  • Google Expands Stadia Support to Gaming Phones, Flagship Samsungs - Google is expanding the list of phones supported by its Stadia game-streaming service on February 20th. Initially supported only on its own Pixel phones, Stadia will support Samsung flagship Galaxy S and Note series phones (S8 and newer), as well as gaming phones from Razer and Asus (ROG Phone and ROG Phone II). For a controller, gamers can either connect a Stadia controller via USB, or third-party controllers via Bluetooth. Stadia competes with Microsoft's xCloud and Nvidia's GeForce Now. Like those other game-streaming services, Stadia runs full console-quality games on powerful servers in the cloud, streaming video of the rendered graphics to the user's device. Such services benefit from the higher data rates and lower latency of 5G networks. Forthcoming 5G SA networks will further reduce latency and improve data rates.
  • The Mandalorian was shot on a holodeck-esque set with Unreal Engine, video shows - Industrial Light and Magic has published a behind-the-scenes video on the production of Disney+'s The Mandalorian that gives an illuminating look at two of the biggest, high-tech trends in film and TV production: LED sets, and using game engines to create scenes. The video explains a major shift in virtual filmmaking that is unknown to most viewers.
  • TikTok Rolling Out Parental Controls -TikTok is rolling out a new feature called Family Safety Mode, which lets parents set limits on their children's TikTok accounts. Parents will need to install TikTok and link their account to their child's. The app will then let parents set screen time limits, restrict the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences, and limit who can direct message their child. The feature is available first in the UK, and will begin to roll out to "additional markets in the coming weeks".
  • MWC 2020 Trade Show Cancelled - The GSMA mobile industry trade group has cancelled its annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. An avalanche of companies have pulled out of the event in recent days, due to concerns over how the international event could potentially help spread the new coronavirus, even though that risk is extremely low thanks to quarantine measures put in place by China and other affected countries, and extensive preventative measures already announced for MWC. MWC is the largest trade show in the world for the mobile industry.
  • A neural network picks promising antibiotics out of a library of chemicals - But does it work? Apparently! After using the network on a small library of chemicals, it identified 99 molecules that looked promising. Testing of these revealed that over half inhibited the growth of bacteria. And, perhaps more significantly, there was a nice correlation between the score for the molecule generated by the neural network and its performance when tested against actual bacteria. After a few more tests, the researchers tackled a big one: a selection from a giant database with over 100 million molecules (107,349,233 to be exact). Going through them took the system four days, which is a lot faster than the "probably never" that it would take to screen that number of molecules in real life. Not surprisingly, a number of molecules came out of that screen, and the authors describe a few tests of two of them. Both were broad spectrum, killing a large variety of bacterial species—one of them brought growing bacterial cultures to a halt in only four hours.

Microsoft Redesigns Windows 10 Icons - tech
(hx) 12:25 AM CET - Feb,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system has been a mix of old and new designs since its launch, however, Microsoft decided to modernize its UI look by providing a fresh set of icons. If you are a user of Microsoft Office suite, then you already know how the new icons look for Office applications like Excel and Word. The material design present on those apps is now transferring to the rest of Windows 10 stock applications like Calendar and Calculator. In the effort to modernize the look of Windows 10 and end the Windows 7 inspired UI, Microsoft will be pushing the updated icon set over few following months. The updates icons are already available for Windows 10 Insiders, and specifically for Preview Build 19569. Regular users can expect to get the update in the coming months.

Intel Core i7-10700F Roughly Matches Ryzen 7 3700X - tech
(madman) 06:00 PM CET - Feb,19 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
The Core i7-10700F is an upcoming 8-core/16-thread processor that's expected to be significantly affordable compared to the i7-10700K. Unlike the i7-10700K targeted at overclockers, the i7-10700F is multiplier locked, has lower nominal clock speeds of 2.90 GHz, and lacks integrated graphics (hence the "F" extension). PC enthusiasts on Korean tech community QuasarZone posted a screenshot of an alleged i7-10700F test run on Cinebench R20. The chip is shown scoring 4781 points in the multi-threaded test, and 492 points single-threaded. These scores roughly compare with AMD's Ryzen 7 3700X processor. No other details such as motherboard or memory configuration were put out.

Cyberpunk 2077 themed GeForce RTX Graphics Card - tech
(hx) 12:30 PM CET - Feb,17 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
CD Projekt Red, a game developer behind an upcoming game called Cyberpunk 2077, decided to question, on Twitter, whatever NVIDIA will make any special-edition GeForce RTX graphics card for the Cyberpunk 2077 game launch. The official NVIDIA GeForce replied to it with a hint of a doubt, however, what followed was an official teaser of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 themed GeForce RTX graphics card. While the image is a bit blurry, it was done on purpose of teasing just enough, but not everything. Classical marketing is in play here, however, we can extract some details. The card in question is a GeForce RTX GPU with a reference type cooler that is colored with yellow accenting around the GPU shroud. Since Cyberpunk 2077 launches in September, NVIDIA should launch its special edition graphics card around that timeframe.

Intel Core i9-10900 10-core CPU Pictured - tech
(hx) 11:51 PM CET - Feb,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (6)
Intel's desktop Comet Lake-S lineup is close to being released and we are getting more leaks about the CPU models contained inside it. Perhaps one of the most interesting points for Comet Lake-S series is that it brings a boost in frequency and boost in core count, with the highest-end Core i9 processors going up to 10 cores. Thanks to Xfastest, a Hong Kong-based media outlet, we have first pictures of what appears to be an engineering sample of the upcoming Core i9-10900 processor. Being a non-K version, this CPU is not capable of overclocking and has a fixed TDP rating of 65 Watts. Compared to 125 W of the K models like the upcoming Core i9-10900K, this CPU will output almost half the heat, thus requiring a less capable cooling solution. The CPU is installed in LGA1200 socket, which is a new home for Comet Lake-S CPUs and provides backward compatibility for coolers supporting LGA1151. In the sample processor pictured here, we can see a marking on the CPU that implies 2.5 GHz base clock.

TechNews - Radeon RX 5600 XT vs. GeForce GTX 1060 - tech
(hx) 12:50 AM CET - Feb,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Intel Core i7-10700K Comet Lake-S CPU Spied Flexing 5.3GHz Turbo Clock - According to the benchmark result, which comes courtesy of leakster TUM_APISAK, the Core i7-10700K has 8 cores that are capable of executing 16 threads. The processor also allegedly has base clock of 3.8GHz and features a turbo frequency of 5.3GHz. For comparison, the Core i9-10900K has an additional two cores, and has a stated turbo clock of 5.1GHz. Based on its core counts and clock speeds, it looks as though the Core i7-10700K would be positioned to go up against the Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryzen 7 3700X, both of which are 8-core/16-thread processor
  • Radeon RX 5600 XT vs. GeForce GTX 1060 6GB vs. GTX 1070: 32 Game Benchmark - The Radeon RX 5600 XT is ~50% faster than the GTX 1060 and that makes it a solid upgrade choice for most gamers.
  • AMD Desktop Processor Market Share Now at 18.3% - Market intelligence firm Mercury Research published its findings on the x86 processor market towards the end of 2019, in which AMD has posted growth in all segments (not counting IoT or semi-custom). AMD held 18.3 percent of the desktop x86 processor market, according to the report. a 5-year high. The company's EPYC line of server processors face a more uphill battle against enterprises' entrenched brand loyalties to Intel. The company holds 4.5 percent of the server processor market, but growing 0.2 percent points versus the previous quarter, and 1.4 percentage points vs. the previous year. The last time AMD held such a market share in the server x86 processor market was in Q3-2013. AMD's mobile processor market share may come as a surprise to some. According to Mercury Research, the company holds 16.2 percent of the mobile x86 processor market, which is almost as much as its desktop market. This is probably propelled by the popularity of AMD APUs and low-power CPUs in the cost-effective notebook market segments. AMD is now eyeing higher market segments with its Ryzen 4000 "Renoir" processors that make landfall this year. AMD is growing faster in the mobile space than desktop, with 1.5 percentage points growth in just Q4, and 4 percentage points year-over-year. AMD's mobile market share was this high back in Q2-2013. Mercury Research pins AMD's overall hold over the x86 market at 15.5%, averaged on all segments, minus semi-custom and IoT.
  • Apple Finally Buying AMD CPUs? - Since its switch to the x86 machine architecture from PowerPC in the mid-2000s, Apple has been consistent with Intel as its sole supplier of CPUs for its Macbooks, iMac desktops, and Mac Pro workstations. The company's relationship with rival AMD has been limited to sourcing discrete GPUs. If pieces of code from a MacOS beta is anything to go buy, Apple could bite the AMD bullet very soon. References to several AMD processors were found in MacOS 10.15.4 Beta 1. These include the company's "Picasso," "Renoir," and "Van Gogh" APUs. It's very likely that with increasing CPU IPC and energy-efficiency, Apple is finally seeing the value in single-chip solutions from AMD that have a good enough combination of CPU and iGPUs. The 7 nm "Renoir" silicon in particular could change the mobile and desktop computing segments, thanks to its 8-core "Zen 2" CPU, and a "Vega" based iGPU that's highly capable in non-gaming and light-gaming tasks. AMD's proprietary SmartShift feature could also be leveraged, which dynamically switches between the iGPU and an AMD discrete GPU.
  • VMWare Updates Licensing Model, Setting 32-Core Limit - VMWare has announced changes to its licensing model. From now on, licensees will have to acquire a license per 32 CPU cores, instead of the former "per socket" model. This effectively means that users who had made a migration to AMD's 64-core EPYC CPUs, for instance, and who saved on both price-per core and VMWare licensing fees compared to Intel customers (who would need two sockets to achieve the same core-count, and thus, two licenses) are now being charged for two licenses for a 64-core, AMD-populated socket. This was a selling point for AMD - the company stated that their high-end EPYC processors could act as a dual-socket setup with a single processor, thanks to EPYC's I/O capabilities and core counts. VMWare claims this change is in line with industry standard pricing models. Of course this decision from VMWare hits AMD the hardest, and it comes at a time where there are already 48 and 64 core CPUs available in the market. Should this licensing change be done, perhaps it should be in line with the current state of the industry, and not following in a quasi-random core-count (it definitely isn't random, though, and I'll leave it at that). From VMware's perspective, AMD's humongous CPU core counts does affect their bottom line. The official release claiming customers license software based on CPU counts may be valid, and they do allow for free licenses for servers past 32 cores until April 30, 2020. Of course, VMWare is also preparing itself for future industry changes - Intel will obviously increase its core counts in response to AMD's EPYC attack on the expected core counts of professional applications
  • Cybersecurity in 2019: Ransomware up 41% in the US Alone -  Security firm Emsisoft reported a 41% increase in ransomware attacks in 2019 (in the US) compared to the previous year (up to 205,280 distinct attacks). The advent of cryptocurrencies with built-in anonimity, such as Monero, have become the favored extortion method employed by wrongdoers, shielding them from the usual checks and balances of the banking system. And with increasingly complex tools in the hands of hackers, plus the advantage of first strike new attacks enjoy, ransomware is becoming harder and harder to battle. According to the New York Times, citing security firm Coveware, the average payment for file decryption in 2019 rose to $84,116 in the Q4 2019, double what it was just in Q3. And in the last month of the year, the average decryption payment jumped more than twofold to $190,946.
  • Newly discovered PC malware version spreads through Wi-Fi networks - A newly discovered version of the Emotet Trojan has been observed to be spreading through Wi-Fi networks by using brute-force. The spread can be prevented by using strong, complex Wi-Fi passwords.
  • Microsoft xCloud Game Streaming Finally Lands On iOS With Some Caveats - Today, Microsoft is ready to make available a beta version of Project xCloud for iOS users, and it’s doing so through Apple’s TestFlight service. Given that Project xCloud is still in beta; that it is only available right now through TestFlight; and that this is Apple that we’re dealing with, there are some key difference compared to when the service launched on Android. For starters, it’s only open to users in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and only one game will be supported [at least initially] at launch: Halo: The Masterchief Collection. But it doesn’t end there; Xbox Console Streaming is not currently active, and a maximum of 10,000 users can be invited to the TestFlight. If you’re fine with all of those roadblocks, technical requirements for acceptance include the need to be running iOS 13 or higher, Bluetooth 4.0 support, a Bluetooth-based Xbox One controller, and a Wi-Fi or cellular connection of 10Mbps or higher.

It has a 13 megapixel camera on the back plus depth camera for portrait mode, and a 5 megapixel camera on the front
  • Hands On with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - The Galaxy Z Flip is a fascinating phone. The engineering is unlike other folding phones to date. Actually, it borrows ideas from both the Galaxy Fold and Motorola's razr. It doesn't fold 100% "flat", meaning when it's closed, there is a slight gap between the two halves at the hinge end. But it's a much thinner gap than what was on the Galaxy Fold. It's small enough that, at quick glance, you might not even notice it.
  • Android February Security Patch Fixes Critical Bluetooth  - A security flaw has been found in Android that allows attackers to access a phone via Bluetooth with no user interaction required. Android's most recent monthly security update, released on February 3rd, fixes the flaw. The vulnerability is rated "critical" - the highest rating - for Android versions 8 and 9. In Android 10, the same bug allows a remote attacker to crash the Bluetooth system, but does not present the same security vulnerability. Attackers must be within Bluetooth range (typically around 30 feet) to exploit the flaw. Users can ensure they're not vulnerable by turning off Bluetooth until their phone receives the February update. There are ways to continue using Bluetooth in public while making it difficult to exploit the flaw. Attackers need to know your Bluetooth MAC address (device ID). This can be obtained in two ways: The first is if your phone is in Bluetooth "discoverable" (pairing) mode. Also, on some devices, the Bluetooth MAC address can be deduced from the Wi-Fi MAC address. Therefore users with a non-updated Android phone who are concerned about the issue should avoid pairing new Bluetooth devices while near any public areas, and keep Wi-Fi turned off on their phone.

  • The filming of The Witcher season two is expected to start Feb 2020 - The filming of The Witcher season two is expected to start this February in the United Kingdom and will eventually relocate to Scotland and parts of Eastern Europe. Season two will probably be released somewhere in the next year. Actress Carmel Laniado will be joining the TV show according to Deadline. She will be playing Violet, "a young girl whose playful and whimsical demeanour is a front for a smarter and more sadistic character." The actress is relatively new in the show business. She appeared in the movie Dolittle as Lady Rose and as young Lottie in FX's miniseries A Christmas Carol. Personally I cannot recall any characters from the books or the games with the name Violet. There is also a rumor that Kristofer Hivju will also join the series for the new season. He is the actor who played Tormund Giantsbane on Game of Thrones. Showrunner Hissrich said she already has plans for more than five seasons. So it looks like Netflix's The Witcher is here to stay for quite some time.

Microsoft's Surface Duo spotted in the wild - tech
(hx) 07:27 PM CET - Feb,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft's upcoming dual-screen Android phone, the Surface Duo, is getting ready for prime time. A couple of days ago, Israel Rodriguez spotted one in use on Vancouver's SkyTrain, tweeting an image that shows what appears to be a flash next to the front-facing camera. But as promised, there's more. In fact, there's a lot more. Rodriguez tweeted out a link to a YouTube video that includes several photos and some video footage, although there's no sound. It shows various use cases, such as playing games, checking email, using the device in various form factors, and more.

Other than the fact that the Surface Duo runs Android, comes with two 5.6-inch displays, and will be out Holiday 2020, we know next to nothing about the device. Microsoft hasn't said a word about any of the internal specs like the SoC, RAM, or battery life of the strikingly thin device, and we have no idea how much the device will cost. Surface devices are usually high-end, but when it comes to foldable smartphones, "high-end" can mean anywhere from $1,000 to $2,700. Microsoft isn't shelling out for one of those expensive, high-tech flexible OLED displays, but it does have twice as many displays as normal, and they are in a weird aspect ratio to boot.

NVIDIA's GeForce Now Service is Launched - tech
(hx) 10:06 AM CET - Feb,05 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
After years in public beta, the company’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service is officially launching today with both free and paid tiers. GeForce Now officially supports around 400 games, which you can find via the service’s search bar. That tally includes most of the more popular titles being played today, and Nvidia says it adds four or five new games every week or so. PUBG, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 3, Dishonored 2, XCOM 2, and many, many more triple-A games work with GeForce Now, as do indie gems like Battletech, Stardew Valley, and Disco Elysium. The service doesn’t come with any games, but will run those you buy (or have bought) on Steam, Epic, Uplay or Battle.net — note that Origin, GoG, Microsoft Store and other launchers are not presently supported.

As of today, any user on the Internet can register and take advantage of the free edition, which allows you to connect to the cloud service for up to an hour per session. If you sign up for the Founder’s membership, which costs $4.99 per month, you can play for up to 6 six hours in a row and you’ll get priority access to the servers. The first three months of a Founder’s plan are free so there’s no reason right now to go with the free tier.

System requirements for NVIDIA's GeForce Now are as stands:
- 15 Mbps internet connection (25 Mbps recommended). A 5 GHz network is preferred if using wireless.
- Any Windows PC running Windows 7 (64-bit) or higher, 4 GB of system memory, a 2.0 GHz dual-core X86 CPU or higher and a GPU that supports DirectX 11.
- Any Mac with macOS 10.10 or higher.
- Any Nvidia Shield TV (2015, 2017, 2019; Base and Pro models).
- Any Android phone running Android 5.0 (L) or higher and 2 GB of system memory.
- A Bluetooth gamepad is strongly recommended, including the Shield controller, Razer Raiju and Junglecat Mobile, or Steelseries Stratus Duo.
The minimum hardware requirements for GeForce Now are so low that you can run it on even the cheapest Windows computer. To run on a PC, you need any dual-core or better CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a GPU that can handle DirectX 11, which even low-end, integrated graphics processors support. You can also run the cloud gaming service on Macs that date back as far as 2009 or on Android devices. To play on your TV, you can use one of Nvidia’s own Android-powered Shield set-top boxes. The one catch (which applies to all cloud streaming services) is that you need a stable Internet connection that’s at least 15 Mbps, which operates over either Wi-Fi 5 (aka 802.11ac) or higher wireless, or Ethernet. The service is unlikely to work well over 4G and you need to have really good Wi-Fi coverage.

Antivirus Providers Continue Supporting Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 06:58 PM CET - Jan,31 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Despite Microsoft ending Windows 7 support on January the 14th and declaring it End-Of-Life (EOL), most of the antivirus providers are still providing their services to Windows 7 users. With a large portion of the users unable to switch to the newer and supported OS versions like Windows 10, antivirus providers see a good opportunity to gain new customers that want to protect their PCs from the possible threats. Thanks to the AV-Test report we have a list of antivirus providers that are going to support Windows 7, and it includes all of the big players with a plan to support their software on Windows 7 until 2022. So some of the Windows 7 users unable to upgrade to the newer OS are going to be at least semi-protected against possible vulnerabilities, with exception of course for those found in OS level. When it comes to the number one source of the threats, the browser, there is some good news there as well. Google plans to support its Chrome browser to at least July 2021, while Mozilla declared no official information about their support plans, however, if they behave as they did with Windows XP and its support ending, your Firefox browser will likely get some more mileage out of it.

Intel 400-series Chipset Mobos to Lack PCIe Gen 4.0 - tech
(hx) 12:20 PM CET - Jan,27 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Intel's upcoming 400-series desktop chipset will lack support for PCI-Express gen 4.0. The motherboards will stick to gen 3.0 for both the main x16 PEG slots wired to the LGA1200 socket, and general purpose PCIe lanes from the PCH, according to a Tom's Hardware report. It was earlier expected that 400-series chipset motherboards will come with preparation for PCIe gen 4.0, so even if the upcoming 10th gen "Comet Lake" desktop processors lacked gen 4.0 root-complexes, the boards would be fully ready for the new bus standard in 11th gen "Rocket Lake" desktop processors.

10th gen "Comet Lake" desktop processors are built on 14 nm process, and implement Intel's current-gen CPU core design Intel has been implementing since 6th gen "Skylake." It's only with 11th gen "Rocket Lake" that the mainstream desktop platform could see a new CPU core design, with the company reportedly back-porting "Willow Cove" CPU cores to the 14 nm process. "Rocket Lake" is also expected to feature a small Gen12 iGPU with 32 execution units, and a new-gen uncore component that implements PCIe gen 4.0. PCIe gen 4.0 doubles bandwidth over gen 3.0, and while only a handful GPUs support it, the standard is made popular by a new generation of M.2 NVMe SSDs that are able to utilize the added bandwidth to push sequential transfer rates beyond M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 limitations.

In other news,Intel has delayed the launch of 10th gen Core desktop processors and 400-series chipset motherboards to Q2-2020, to as early as April.

Here's Why Windows 7 Is Nuking Your Background Image - tech
(hx) 07:37 PM CET - Jan,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
A recent security update appears to be messing with some Windows 7 PCs by replacing the custom background image with an all-black wallpaper. The timing of the mishap comes on the heels of Windows 7 officially entering retirement, leading to speculation that Microsoft is petty towards people who refuse to upgrade their OS to Windows 10. That is not necessarily what is happening, though. Reports of the black wallpaper issue are popping up in various places on the web, including over at Reddit and on Microsoft's own support forum.
After KB4534310 installed, every boot-up replaces my graphic wallpaper with a black solid color. I've tried creating a new theme, tried renaming transcodedwallpaper.jpg to .old, but although these changes allow me to restore my graphic wallpaper, after restarting, the desktop wallpaper is black again. Icons and start bar color are unaffected. The only solution was to uninstall the update. But now my PC is less secure. Microsoft, please fix this!
The issue is indeed related to KB4534310, and appears to be a bug rather than a crummy attempt to annoy users into upgrading to Windows 10. Users discovered the actual culprit is the Stretch setting in the Desktop Background options menu. This allows users to stretch an image to fit the entire screen, but for whatever reason, KB453410 broke the functionality. Unfortunately, it's not yet clear if Microsoft will fix the issue, since it is no longer supporting Windows 7. We hope it does, because it's a bad look to break something with a final update and then essentially tell users, 'Too bad!'.

Fortunately, there are a couple of workarounds. One is to uninstall the KB4534310 update, though I don't suggest going that route. The other is a clever trick. Since the stretch option is borked right now, you can take a screenshot of of your desktop with the image stretched out, and then use that resulting image as your background without the stretch option enabled.
  • Go into the Desktop Background settings and select the Fill option to restore your custom image, then select Stretch again. It will stretch the image as normal until your reboot your PC, at which point it is replaced by a black wallpaper. So don't reboot after doing this. Save the changes.
  • Right-click on your desktop, select View, uncheck Show Desktop icons, and select Show Desktop Gadgets.
  • Exit all windows and hit the Print Screen key to take a screenshot. Using your image editing program of choice (MS Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever), save your screenshot.
  • Go into the Desktop Background settings and use your saved image as the new background. In the position setting, select Center. You can now safely reboot your PC without having the background revert to a black wallpaper.
  • Right-click on your desktop, select View, and re-enable Show Desktop icons.

AMD Posts Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.1.3 - tech
(hx) 07:53 PM CET - Jan,21 2020 - Post a comment
AMD today released Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.1.3 beta drivers. These drivers add support for the new Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card that's hitting the shelves today; in addition to fixing a handful issues. To begin with, the drivers address a display signal loss noticed when performing parallel actions such as web browsing, gaming or watching video. Game crashes related to Nioh, Dragon Quest Builders 2, WWE 2K20, Dead or Alive 6 and Atelier Ryza were fixed. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus now appears correctly in Radeon Software. Text overflow in some UI elements have been fixed. Loss of fan-tuning settings when switching between available GPUs has been fixed. Another kind of intermittent black screen on desktop idling for extended periods has been fixed.

Fixed Issues

  • An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when performing parallel actions such as web browsing, gaming or watching video.
  • A limited number of games such as Nioh™, Dragon Quest Builders 2™, WWE™2K20, Dead or Alive 6™ and Atelier Ryza™ may crash or fail to launch.
  • Wolfenstein™ 2: The New Colossus is not detected in Radeon Software games manager.
  • Text overflow in some UI boxes or toast messages may be experienced in some language localizations.
  • Fan Tuning may change back to the default state when switching between available GPUs.
  • Copy text options are not available in the display specs table for Radeon Software.
  • An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when the system is left idle at desktop.
  • Factory Reset install may keep previously configured Radeon Software game profiles. This can cause mismatch between global graphics settings and per profile settings.

GeForce RTX 3080 / RTX 3070 'Ampere' Graphics Cards Detailed? - tech
(hx) 07:59 PM CET - Jan,20 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
On January 17, a Twitter user ‘KittyCorgi’ shares initial information about two GPUs: Ampere GA103 and GA104. The former GPU is supposedly associated with a higher-end GPU while the latter is likely for RTX 3070 series. According to the rumor, GA103 GPU would supposedly feature 60 SMs (Streaming Multiprocessors “Ampere”) while GA104 would end up with 48. The weird naming convention (103) is something we do no fully understand, NVIDIA does not use uneven numbers for high-end GPUs. The original source also shared die diagrams for GA103 and GA104, they look professional but they are not as detailed as Turing diagrams, hence we put a strong doubt on their credibility.

If this data is to be believed then RTX 3080 could get GA103 GPU, while GA104 would end up in RTX 3070. This is the same approach as we had for the original Turing series where RTX 2080 received the TU104 processor and 2070 was based on smaller TU106 silicon. Of course, this has changed for the SUPER series where both SKUs feature TU104. The rumor also mentions a 320-bit bus for RTX 3080, which would allow 10/20GB memory configuration. This is also very uncommon for NVIDIA and probably just as hard to believe.

NVIDIA has never confirmed Ampere as their next-generation architecture for the GeForce series. It is only present in multiple publications and leaks from foundries. For now, all we know is that the next-architecture could also be called Hopper. We actually expect NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang to present a new roadmap at GTC 2020, which starts on March 22nd.
