TSMC 5 nm+ Node Manufacturing Goes High-Volume in Q4 - tech
(hx) 02:36 PM CEST - May,31 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
The DigiTimes report indicates that TSMC is preparing the 5 nm+ node for AMD Ryzen 4000 "Vermeer" series of CPUs. Originally planned for using the 7 nm+ node, the CPUs are supposedly ported to a smaller node, providing better transistor performance and lower power consumption. The Ryzen 4000 series of desktop processors were planned for launching later this year, however, being that the new information provided by DigiTimes suggests 5 nm+ node could be used, we can expect to see Zen 3 based processors sometime in early 2021. Despite the current world pandemic happening, TSMC is relentless and seems like it can not be stopped. Sources at DigiTimes have confirmed that the company will do High-Volume Manufacturing of the chips in Q4, meaning that we can expect first chips on the 5 nm+ node somewhere in the beginning of 2021. This is very good news as it reassures us that TSMC is untouched by the happenings in the world and that they will manage to deliver just fine.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT and Ryzen 7 3800XT Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 01:14 PM CEST - May,27 2020 - Post a comment
AMD's 3rd generation Ryzen "Matisse Refresh" processors surfaced on the Futuremark online database, as dug up by TUM_APISAK, where someone with access to them allegedly posted some performance numbers. Interestingly, the clock-speeds as read by the Futuremark SystemInfo module appear very different from what were previously reported. The 3800XT is shown featuring a 3.80 GHz nominal clock, boosting up to 4.70 GHz, while the 3900XT has a 3.90 GHz nominal clock, boosting up to the same 4.70 GHz as the 3800XT. APISAK reports that the 3800XT scores 25135 points in the FireStrike physics test.

A WCCFTech report presents screenshots of Cinebench R20 single-thread performance scores of the 3900XT, where it is shown beating the i9-10900K (in a single-threaded test). The 3800XT is within striking distance of the i9-10900K in this test, and beats the i7-10700KF. This single-threaded performance figure suggests that AMD's design focus with "Matisse Refresh" has been to shore up single-threaded and less-parallelized application performance, in other words, gaming performance.
AMD Re-Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.4.2 as a WHQL - tech
(hx) 09:39 AM CEST - May,27 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD on Tuesday re-released its Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.4.2 graphics drivers as a WHQL-signed driver. The company hasn't released a driver update since April 21 (the same 20.4.2 as a beta). With no new AAA game releases, there probably wasn't much AMD could do. Then again, 20.4.2 beta came with a long list of "known issues" (new issues identified by AMD that needed to be solved), which could have been fixed in the last 35 days or so. The WHQL is identical to the beta. It comes with optimization for Gears Tactics and Predator: Hunting Grounds, and fixes a handful of issues.

Linus Torvalds abandons Intel for AMD - tech
(hx) 05:15 PM CEST - May,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (11)
What just happened? Remember when AMD’s processors were the inferior option for those who couldn’t afford Intel’s products? How times have changed. Team red has seen a resurgence in its CPU division since the arrival of Ryzen, and now one of the company’s famous users, ‘father of Linux’ Linus Torvalds, has revealed he’s moving to an AMD processor after 15 years of sticking with Intel. In yesterday’s announcement of the new Linux Kernel 5.7 RC7, Torvalds wrote: “The biggest excitement this week for me was just that I upgraded my main machine, and for the first time in about 15 years, my desktop isn't Intel-based. No, I didn't switch to ARM yet, but I'm now rocking an AMD Threadripper 3970x.” While he didn’t reveal which CPU processor he was using prior to the change, Torvalds added that “My 'allmodconfig' test builds are now three times faster than they used to be.” It’s interesting that Torvalds mentioned ARM, suggesting that his long-term aim is to use an ARM-powered desktop.

Intel Rocket Lake CPU Appears with 6 Cores and 12 Threads - tech
(hx) 08:46 PM CEST - May,23 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
We have been hearing a lot about Intel's Rocket Lake lineup of processors. They are supposed to be a backport of Willow Cove 10 nm core, adapted to work on a 14 nm process for better yielding. Meant to launch sometime around late 2020 or the beginning of 2021, Rocket Lake is designed to work on the now existing LGA1200 socket motherboards, which were launched just a few days ago along with Intel Comet Lake CPUs. Rocket Lake is there to supply the desktop segment and satisfy user demand, in light of lacking 10 nm offers for desktop users. The 10 nm node is going to present only on mobile/laptop and server solutions before it comes to the desktop. Thus far, the six-core, 12-thread model surfaced with a 3.5 GHz base clock and 4.2 GHz boost clock. According to the hardware sleuth, there are multiple Rocket Lake submissions for 3DMark 11, but this particular one has the best score of them all. For comparison, the tipster provided scores for the Core i5-10400 (codename Comet Lake) chip. The Core i5-10400 also conforms to a six-core, 12-thread design, making it the perfect comparison chip. The Core i5-10400 checks in with a 2.9 GHz base clock and 4.3 GHz boost clock. The Rocket Lake processor scored 11,944 points in the physics test and 1,900 points in the graphics test. The Core i5-10400, on the other hand, put up scores of 12,828 points and 1,822 points in the physics and graphics tests, respectively. On the computing side, the Comet Lake chip seemingly delivers up to 7.4% higher performance than the Rocket Lake chip. In regards to integrated graphics, the Rocket Lake part is up to 4.3% faster. Given that it's an engineering sample, it might be too early to draw any concrete conclusions for Rocket Lake. The estimated time frame for Rocket Lake's launch is between Q4 of this year and the Q1 2021.

Intel i9-10900K CPU runs very hot & consumes 235W - tech
(hx) 10:17 PM CEST - May,12 2020 - Post a comment / read (8)
The core i9 10900K is going to be the flagship gaming CPU in the “Comet Lake S” lineup from INTEL. With the launch date coming nearer, it would be hitting shelves soon. Based on the tests run by this user, it looks like this chip is quite power hungry and it can easily get hot as well. INTEL has been relying on the same aging 14nm process node for quite some time, with little changes done to the CPU architecture as well. This has now started to show its age. The chip also ran at a peak temperature of 93deg C, with an average temp of around 87deg C. This unlocked CPU does run at higher clock speeds and hence runs hotter and consumes more power at full load. The Core i9-10900K can hit 250W when all the cores are pushed to 5.2 GHz (at 1.3V+ voltage). 5.1 and 5.0 GHz speeds can also be achieved with lower voltages of 1.22-1.25V, with the power consumption being in the range of 220-230W, resulting in slightly lower temperatures too.

Windows 10 20H1 Update releases on May 26th - tech
(hx) 09:30 AM CEST - May,09 2020 - Post a comment
According to a recent post about the updated Driver Shiproom Schedule for this year (via Windows Latest), the next feature update for Windows 10 (in that case the May 2020 Update) could ship at some point between May 26 and May 28. So, if Microsoft sticks with this plan, you should expect the feature update to land on any of these three days (26th, 27th, and 28th May). Albeit, Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet reported earlier this month telling us that the possible rollout date could be May 28. Until now, all signs seem to indicate Microsoft’s intention to push back Windows 10 May 2020 update to the last week of this month, and today’s leak seems to confirm this anticipation. For those don’t know, Microsoft releases the Driver Shiproom Schedule for OEM developers so that they comply with monthly Patch Tuesday and feature updates. Proceeding this way allows PC manufacturers to improve the reliability of driver updates while avoiding conflicts.

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 Version 20H1 will officially support DirectX 12 Ultimate. Alongside the new features that DX12 Ultimate will bring are DirectX Raytracing Tier 1.1, Mesh Shader and Sampler Feedback. Moreover, the May 2020 Update will bring some Xbox Game Bar improvements. For instance, it will add an FPS counter and a performance overlay. Now I don’t know whether these metrics will be better than those of Rivatunner, however, it’s cool witnessing Microsoft improving the Game Bar. It’s also worth noting that this new version of Windows 10 will improve disk usage for Windows Search. It will also enable Windows Hello PIN in Safe Mode. Furthermore, Task Manager will now display GPU temperature, and it will add Mouse Speed to Settings.

While the update should be available later this month, it could take some time to arrive on your PC due to the phased nature of the rollout. If you can’t wait to receive it, then there are various available to you. For example, you can use the Media Creation Tool, ISO files, or the Insider program to install the update.

After May 2020 Update is released, Microsoft will begin testing Windows 10 20H2 (a minor cumulative update-like release) with testers in the Release Preview Ring.

AMD Ryzen 3 3300X and Ryzen 3 3100 Reviews - tech
(hx) 02:34 PM CEST - May,08 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
While Intel still technically holds some leadership on single thread/IPC performance, all in all, they have taken a beating by Ryzen 3000. Intel has just recently announced their new Comet Lake S desktop processors, which we will be doing a full writeup later this month on. However, for now, we have the intro to the mainstream, aka Ryzen 3 of the Ryzen 3000 product stack from AMD.

TechSpot:
Meet the new Ryzen 3 3100, set to cost just $100, it features 4 cores, 8 threads and clocks between 3.6 and 3.9 GHz depending on the workload. For such an affordable processor it also features a rather large 18MB of cache. This part is rated for a 65 watt TDP and so you get the Wraith Stealth cooler, a nice addition at this price point. Then we have the Ryzen 3 3300X which costs $120. It's also a 4 core, 8 thread part, with the same cache, TDP and box cooler. The core clocks are a bit higher, between 3.8 and 4.3 GHz. Now you might think a 10% increase in clock frequency is a bit weak for a 20% increase in price, but there’s more to it. The R3 3100 and 3300X feature a different topology. In other words, they are arranged differently within the core complex die.

Looking at gaming results from 7 games, here we see that the 3300X is comparable to the 2700X on average and the older Core i7-7700K CPU. It was also 4% faster than the 9400F for the average frame rate, but 13% faster when comparing 1% lows. When compared to the inexpensive 1600 AF you’re looking at a 16% boost on average.
TechPowerUp:
The AMD Ryzen 3 3100 has its multiplier unlocked, which means you are free to overclock it as you like—unlike Intel's non-K CPUs.

Overclocking was super easy, and we managed significant gains that greatly exceed what the default configuration is able to achieve. This is a first for Zen 2 because AMD usually clocks their processors right up to the maximum out of the box with clever boosting algorithms that pretty much nullify any manual overclocking potential. At a very reasonable 1.25 V, the maximum CPU overclock was 4350 MHz. Higher voltage and AIO watercooling made 4.4 GHz mostly stable, but not fully.

In application performance, the Ryzen 3 3100 does very well, beating all the Celerons, Pentiums, and i3 processors Intel has to offer. It roughly matches the Core i5-8400 in performance and ends up 5% behind the 9400F. Compared to AMD's first-generation Ryzen, the 3100 beats the mid-range Ryzen 5 1600 and is almost as fast as the Zen+ based Ryzen 5 2600—pretty impressive for the lowest-priced new member of the Ryzen 3000 family. Of course, there are faster processors on the market, with more cores and threads. For example, the Ryzen 5 3600 is 32% faster, and Intel's Core i5-9600 is 15% quicker. Overall, the Ryzen 3 3100 is an excellent choice for a home or office PC that can handle any consumer or productivity workload you throw at it. Gaming performance of the Ryzen 3 3100 is very decent, too, considering its price point. Gaming performance at 1080p matches the Ryzen 7 1700X and Ryzen 7 2600—these were powerful processors back in the day, which shows how much progress AMD has made with Zen 2.
TH:
At stock settings, the Ryzen 3 3300X offered nearly identical gaming performance (based on a geometric mean of our benchmark suite) to the Ryzen 5 3600, and actually squeaked past it in our 99th percentile measurements. If you're interested solely in gaming, the Ryzen 3 3300X takes the shine off of purchasing the Ryzen 5 3600, even though the 3600's twelve threads would come in handy for multi-tasking, streaming, and/or recording.

  • AMD Announces 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 Quad-Core Desktop Processors - AMD announced the newest additions to the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen desktop processor family, the AMD Ryzen 3 3100 and AMD Ryzen 3 3300X processors and AMD B550 Chipset for Socket AM4 designed for 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen desktop processors with over 60 designs in development. Taking advantage of the AMD world-class portfolio of technologies, these new Ryzen 3 desktop processors bring the groundbreaking "Zen 2" core architecture to business users, gamers, and creators worldwide, leveraging Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) technology for increased productivity. With double the threads, twice the bandwidth, and a wide selection of motherboards in development the AMD B550 chipset and Ryzen 3 desktop processors deliver the ideal processing solution from top to bottom.
  • Best CPUs for Gaming: April/May 2020 - Currently Amazon's best sellers are AMD Ryzen processors, with the Ryzen 5 3600 taking the top spot. Intel gets into position from sixth, with the Core i7-9700K. If users absolutely want Intel, then the Core i7-9700F is a good choice. It is slightly cheaper, it does peak at 4.7 GHz, and it's likely to match the 3800X on variable core performance, although where the 3800X has 8 cores and 16 threads, the Core i7-9700F only has 8 cores and 8 threads, as well as slightly slower recommended supported memory.
  • Intel Confirms Xe HP 'Superhero' GPU Successor Coming Sooner Than You Might Think - The Intel Graphics Twitter account was on fire today, because they posted an update on the development of the Xe graphics processor, mentioning that samples are ready and packed up in quite an interesting package. The processor in question was discovered to be a Xe-HP GPU variant with an estimated die size of 3700 mm², which means we sure are talking about a multi-chip package here. How we concluded that it is the Xe-HP GPU, is by words of Raja Koduri, senior vice president, chief architect, general manager for Architecture, Graphics, and Software at Intel. He made a tweet, which was later deleted, that says this processor is a "baap of all", meaning "big daddy of them all" when translated from Hindi. Mr. Koduri previously tweeted a photo of the Intel Graphics team at India, which has been working on the same "baap of all" GPU, which suggests this is a Xe-HP chip. It seems that this is not the version of the GPU made for HPC workloads (this is reserved for the Xe-HPC GPU), this model could be a direct competitor to offers like NVIDIA Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro.
  • Some WD Red HDDs Allegedly Use SMR, A Big Nono for NAS and RAID - Western Digital launched the WD Red line of hard drives and solid state drives specifically for NAS applications. The rigors of NAS involves not just near 24x7 uptime, but also the ability to work in RAID volumes, as most NAS servers ease the process for end users to set up RAID volumes for data redundancy. Data Storage-focused tech publication Blocks & Files alleges that some WD Red HDDs are shipping with shingled magnetic recording (SMR), a physical-layer data recording technique that makes the drive unfit for RAID, and in turn unfit for most serious NAS setups. An elaborate investigation and discussion in a Smartmontools thread reveals that both Western Digital and Seagate appear to be shipping HDDs with "DM-SMR" (drive-managed SMR), a feature where the HDD's controller internally performs SMR to increase data density when the physical media is running out of space under CMR (conventional magnetic recording, with conventionally spaced tracks). Think of this as a crude analogue to pseudo-SLC caching employed by modern SSDs. Making matters worse is that DM-SMR drives don't report SMR to host controllers. "Beware of SMR drives in CMR clothing," the thread's title reads. A thread in the user forums of Synology, a prominent NAS manufacturer, recounts a similar horror story.
  • TSMC Kicking Off Development of 2nm Process Node - A report via DigiTimes places TSMC as having announced to its investors that exploratory studies and R&D for the development of the 2 nm process node have commenced. As today's leading semiconductor fabrication company, TSMC doesn't seem to be one resting on its laurels. Their 7 nm process and derivatives have already achieved a 30% weight on the company's semiconductor orders, and their 5 nm node (which will include EUV litography) is set to hit HVM (High Volume Manufacturing) in Q2 of this year. Apart from that, not much more is known on 2 nm. After 5 nm, which is expected to boats of an 84-87% transistor density gain over the current 7nm node, the plans are to go 3nm, with TSMC expecting that node to hit mass production come 2022. Interestingly, TSMC is planning to still use FinFET technology for its 3 nm manufacturing node, though in a new GAAFET (gate-all-around field-effect transistor) technology. TSMC's plans to deploy FinFET in under 5nm manufacturing is something that many industry analysts and specialist thought extremely difficult to achieve, with expectations for these sub-5nm nodes to require more exotic materials and transistor designs than TSMC's apparent plans

  • Smartphone Contact Tracing Tech to be Released Ahead of Schedule - A new contact-tracing technology developed by Apple and Google to address the COVID-19 pandemic will see its first release to developers on April 28th, earlier than originally planned. The technology uses Bluetooth to keep a history of which phones come near which other phones for certain periods of time, as an approximation of people who have come into contact, so that when someone tests positive for COVID-19, other people who need to be tested can be identified quickly. The technology is fully interoperable between iOS and Android phones, thanks to a unique collaboration between Google and Apple. The API being released next week will enable verified public health authorities to use the technology in their own apps. Such apps will need to be installed on a large percentage of phones for the technology to be useful in any given population. Later, Apple and Google plan to integrate a more complete contact-tracing technology into both iOS and Android, which would not require an app install. Apple and Google have designed the technology to be anonymous, voluntary, transparent, temporary, secure, and interoperable, and EU regulators are working with the companies to ensure the technology meets their strict standards in those areas.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update on May 28 - tech
(hx) 12:26 AM CEST - May,02 2020 - Post a comment
Microsoft released Windows 10 build 19041.208 to the Release Preview ring yesterday. The build is a new RTM candidate for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004). The Redmond giant released build 19041to the Slow ring back in December and has ever since been servicing the update with cumulative patches, letting the OS cook for a stable release. However, while one might think that since the feature update has seen multiple bug-fixing cumulative updates, the firm would be ready to release the update to general users early in May, preferably on Patch Tuesday, it looks like that is not the case. Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet reports that the May 2020 Update might be released broadly on May 28. The update was reportedly slated for general availability on May 12, with the build starting to be released to OEMs and developers on April 28. However, those dates have been pushed back owing to a zero-day exploit that the firm wants to patch. As per the revised timelines, the software bits will now be released to OEMs on May 5, with developers getting their hands on the update on May 12. General availability is slated for May 28, 2020. Since the May 2020 Update has seen multiple cumulative updates already, with a few more likely in the future with fixes for the vulnerabilities, the update will most likely be more stable, without containing rough edges at launch.

Windows 10 2004 May Update Will Bring Better Disk Performance - tech
(hx) 06:20 PM CEST - Apr,28 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
According to the latest report by Windows Latest, Microsoft's Windows 10 2004 May update will bring a much-needed disk performance update. The underlying reason behind this improvement is the terrible performance of the Windows Search indexer, which in previous versions of Windows 10 had high disk usage and resulted in a slowdown of the system. However, Microsoft decided to improve that and found a way to optimize its performance. This improvement will be of much need to everyone who owns and runs Windows 10 on a Hard Drive. In Windows 10 update 1909, Microsoft has decided to separate Cortana from the Windows Search and thus brought disk usage a bit lower. However, Microsoft's engineers have been fine-tuning the Search Indexer, and now the performance is significantly better while having a lot less disk usage. Previously, the Search Indexer was very aggressive and spared no resources for its process, so this is a welcome addition. This improvement will leave disk usage capacity to other processes and will result in a noticeably snappier system, which Hard Drive users will appreciate the most.

NVIDIA is Secretly Working on a 5 nm Chip - tech
(hx) 09:06 PM CEST - Apr,24 2020 - Post a comment
According to the report of DigiTimes, which talked about TSMC's 5 nm silicon manufacturing node, they have reported that NVIDIA is also going to be a customer for it and they could use it in the near future. And that is very interesting information, knowing that these chips will not go in the next generation of GPUs. Why is that? Because we know that NVIDIA will utilize both TSMC and Samsung for their 7 nm manufacturing nodes for its next-generation Ampere GPUs that will end up in designs like GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 graphics cards. These designs are not what NVIDIA needs 5 nm for. Being that NVIDIA already has a product in its pipeline that will satisfy the demand for the high-performance graphics market, maybe they are planning something that will end up being a surprise to everyone. No one knows what it is, however, the speculation (which you should take with a huge grain of salt) would be that NVIDIA is updating its Tegra SoC with the latest node. That Tegra SoC could be used in a range of mobile devices, like the Nintendo Switch, so could NVIDIA be preparing a new chip for Nintendo Switch 2?

NVIDIA releases RTX Voice - tech
(hx) 10:32 AM CEST - Apr,24 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Team Green just released the beta of RTX Voice, and it might just be the best thing you can do with an Nvidia graphics card. The concept is simple, use the AI processing capabilities of Nvidia's Tensor Cores to block any background noise, whether it's coming in from your speakers, or going out through your microphone. In a time where millions of people are working from home, including us, a feature that gets rid of distracting noises is truly a godsend. The only potential problem is that this handy piece of software requires an Nvidia RTX graphics card to use. And while NVIDIA has locked this feature on its latest Turing GPUs, there is a workaround via which you can install it on almost all NVIDIA graphics cards. All you have to do is download the application, locate and open the RTXVoice.nvi. Then, you'll simply have to delete the following lines of code. After that, save the file. And that's it. You will now be able to install, configure and use RTX Voice with all NVIDIA graphics cards.

“<constraints>
<property name=”Feature.RTXVoice” level=”silent” text=”${{InstallBlockedMessage}}”/>
</constraints>”

I don't know why NVIDIA has locked this feature. Well, the green team is obviously trying to sell more Turing GPUs. That's it. According to reports, this workaround works on all 10 and 16 series GPUs. On the other hand, there are mixed reports regarding the 900 and 700 series GPUs.

  • NVIDIA Quietly Refreshes Mobile GeForce RTX Graphics Cards - NVIDIA has recently introduced its GeForce RTX 20-series SUPER mobile graphics cards, with the heap of new features that are present on the new GPU models. According to a report from ComputerBase, NVIDIA has refreshed few of the RTX 20-series mobile GPUs in addition to the previously announced SUPER models. Now there are a few models/variants of these RTX 20-series GPUs. Firstly, there is a standard RTX mobile GPU variant called the "Max-P" version - this represents the RTX 20-series GPUs that were launched initially in January of 2019 and it includes three SKUs like RTX 2060, 2070 and 2080. Secondly, there is a "Max-Q" revision of these graphics cards, meant to bring maximum efficiency. These SKUs are power-limited, so they are a bit slower compared to the regular "Max-P" version, and they have a Total Graphics Power (TGP) between 65 W and 90 W depending on the model. Next up we have GeForce RTX SUPER 20-series of GPUs that were launched on April 2nd just a few days ago. These GPUs are special because they bring a heap of new features like more CUDA cores, low-power (1.25 V compared to the old 1.35 V) GDDR6 memory, DynamicBoost, and Optimus support. So what are these new, refresh GPUs? On ComputerBase Forums, XMG (laptop maker) representative has revealed that NVIDIA refreshed some of the older RTX 20-series mobile GPU that were already in use.
  • Dell Launches SafeBIOS Security Update To Protect Remote Workers Amid COVID-19 Lockdowns - Dell says that the new SafeBIOS Events & IoA will allow it to further protect the commercial PCs the company offers that are already the most secure PCs in the industry. SafeBIOS Events & IoA uses behavior-based threat detection at the BIOS level to detect advanced endpoint threats. Dell says that securing the BIOS of a computer is particularly critical because a compromised BIOS can potentially provide an attacker with full access to all data on the endpoint. This includes information on high-value targets like credentials. A compromised BIOS in a worst-case scenario can allow the attacker to move around within an organization's network and attack its broader IT infrastructure.

This new OS-level technology will have an API designed to integrate with official apps offered by public health authorities. Google and Apple promise have committed to making "user privacy and security central to the design". The technology will roll out in two phases. First, in May, both companies will release APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. Second, in the coming months, Apple and Google will build a full contact-tracing function into each OS that is opt-in and works without a special app.

And according to some early leaks, the high-end model, the Intel Core i9 10900-series, will require a lot of power and will run really hot. HXL has shared the following images, showing the i9 10900F during a stress test. This CPU was running at 4.5Ghz on all ten cores and as we can clearly see, it hits 89 degrees of Celsia. And while Intel claims that this CPU may hit 5.3Ghz, it will obviously require the best CPU cooler solution in order to come close to that. Not only that, but the i9 10900F has a PL1 rating of 170W and a PL2 rating of 224W. What this means is that the official TDP will be around 170W. However, and in order to sustain such overclocks on all cores, this CPU will require at times 224W.

(hx) 07:27 PM CEST - Apr,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft could release the next major update to Windows 10, aka 2004, in May as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (build 19041.173). Codenamed "Manganese," Windows 10 2004 has been released to Windows Insiders (slow ring), who can now either update their current installations or get ISO files for the new operating system. For the rest of us, Microsoft could release the software some time in May. Windows 10 2004 introduces a "restore this PC from the cloud" option, refined Windows Update management system; a more functional Task Manager that can show GPU temperatures; improvements to Cortana, Windows Search, and Network management.

Windows 10 v2004 KB4552455 changelog

Today's Windows 10 version 2004 Build 19041.173 (KB4552455) brings all the fixes delivered through Build 19041.172 along with some additional bug fixes. These include:

  • We are mitigating app compatibility issues where older versions of certain apps won’t launch by directing users to go and install the latest version of these apps.
  • We have fixed an issue that fails to allocate resources during device initialization, which causes certain USB mass storage devices to stop working.
  • We have fixed an issue that prevents the mute button from working on certain devices with the Your Phone app.
  • We have fixed an issue that causes a fault in the input-output memory management unit (IOMMU) and a DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION (e6) error. This issue occurs after resuming from hibernate on systems that have Kernel Direct Memory Access (DMA) Protection and Dynamic Root of Trust Measurement (DRTM) enabled.
  • We have updated the Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) to increase the coverage for automatic cellular provisioning on devices with mobile broadband.

Build 19041.173: Known issue

  • We are aware Narrator and NVDA users that seek the latest release of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium may experience some difficulty when navigating and reading certain web content. Narrator, NVDA and the Edge teams are aware of these issues. Users of legacy Microsoft Edge will not be affected. NVAccess has released a NVDA 2019.3 that resolves the known issue with Edge.

Intel's next-generation Comet Lake CPUs will run hot - tech
(hx) 07:09 AM CEST - Apr,09 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
According to reports, Intel will officially reveal its next-generation Comet Lake CPUs on April 30th. And according to some early leaks, the high-end model, the Intel Core i9 10900-series, will require a lot of power and will run really hot. HXL has shared the following images, showing the i9 10900F during a stress test. This CPU was running at 4.5Ghz on all ten cores and as we can clearly see, it hits 89 deg Celsia.

AMD Posts Updated Chipset Drivers that Fix Installer Bugs - tech
(hx) 10:18 PM CEST - Apr,08 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD has posted updated versions of its Chipset Software for AMD "Promontory" 300-series, 400-series, and homebrew X570 chipsets. The new version 2.04.04.111 drivers now come with a brand new installer interface carried over from Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020. AMD has cleaned up several deprecated device IDs from the IOV and integrated USB 3.0 controller drivers. The company also mentions "general system stability improvements" without specifying what these are. Thanks to the new installer, the drivers no longer run into the "Error 1720" code during installation. A bug that caused the drivers to not install to a non C-drive location has been fixed. A screen rotation bug with certain mobile AMD processors has been fixed. Also fixed is a rare system halt bug with certain 7th gen A-series (socket AM4) processors.
Release Highlights
  • Removed deprecated device IDs from the IOV driver
  • Removed deprecated device IDs from the USB 3.0 driver
  • General system stability improvements
Fixed Issues
  • Installer may hang during installation progress
  • Installer may abort with "Error 1720" code
  • Installation will not install on a non C: location
  • Resolved screen rotation bug with select AMD mobile processors
  • Rare system halt on 7th Gen AMD A-Series APUs
Known Issues
  • Windows Installer pop up message may appear during install
  • Moving installer window during install process may cause installer window to flicker/move around the screen
  • Cannot open installation log file after completion
  • Installer may not update a sub-package to the latest version
o Workaround: Manually uninstall any prior sub-package, reboot, then re-install the full Chipset package

Intel 10th Gen Core Desktop Marketing Materials Confirm Core Counts - tech
(d@rkfu) 10:30 AM CEST - Apr,06 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
Marketing materials of Intel's upcoming 10th generation Core "Comet Lake-S" desktop processors leaked to the web confirm the lineup's core-counts. The series will be led by 10-core/20-thread Core i9 processors, with Thermal Velocity Boost frequencies of up to 5.30 GHz. The Core i7 series will consist of 8-core/16-thread processors, with up to 5.10 GHz TVB frequencies. The Core i5 series gets its biggest shot in the arm, with the introduction of HyperThreading for the first time in 8 generations (the last Core i5 desktop processors with HTT were dual-core first-generation Core chips). The 10th gen Core i5 series chips are 6-core/12-thread, with clock-speeds running up to 4.80 GHz. These frequencies should indicate two interesting things. One, that the Core i5-10600K will outperform the Core i7-8700K (6-core/12-thread, up to 4.70 GHz boost), resulting in a roughly 35% increase in price-performance vs. the i7-8700K, if it ends up being priced at $260. Two, that the Core i7-10700K will outperform the Core i9-9900K on virtue of 100 MHz higher frequencies, an give the segment a roughly 30% price-performance increase compared to the i9-9900K. The Core i9-10900K will outperform the i9-9900K both in single- and multi-threaded fronts given its 300 MHz higher max boost and two extra cores (four extra threads).

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.4.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 10:12 PM CEST - Apr,02 2020 - Post a comment
AMD today has released a new beta driver on their Radeon Software Adrenalin suite. Driver number 20.4.1 beta brings with it support for Capcom's Resident Evil 3. Alongside this support, AMD has also fixed a number of issues, including black screens or application hangs in both Overwatch and heroes of the Storm. One important known issue that is listed is the chance of a black screen or system hang when running Folding@Home while also running an application using hardware acceleration of video content. We shan't have that - so if you run into issues like these whilst offering your processing power to the world, beware.
Fixed Issues
  • Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm may experience a black screen or application hang while gaming for extended periods of time on some Radeon RX Vega series graphics product system configurations.
  • HDR may fail to enable or be detected in applications and games using the Vulkan API.
  • Doom Eternal may fail to launch in some hybrid graphics system configurations.
  • Radeon ReLive streaming may fail to launch or may crash when a stream session is started with performance metrics overlay enabled.
  • Some clock values may fail to populate for a limited number of graphics products in the Radeon Settings Hardware information tab.
  • Hotkeys can no longer be assigned to a single digit or character as this has the ability to block or cause interference with some default Windows functionality.
  • Some Radeon FreeSync Premium supported displays may not list all supported refresh rate options in Windows when Radeon FreeSync Premium is enabled in the displays OSD settings.
