NVIDIA Ampere RTX 3090 card will get 21Gbps GDDR6X memory - tech
(hx) 08:45 AM CEST - Aug,15 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
In a recent technology brief Micron has confirmed that it has been developing GDDR6X memory for NVIDIA’s next-generation Ampere graphics card lineup. Micron has been a memory module supplier for the Geforce graphics cards, and this new partnership with Nvidia takes things to a whole new level, by bringing GDDR6X memory type support. Under a comparison on ultra bandwidth solutions, segregated into the GDDR6X column, Micron lists a next-gen NVIDIA card under the "RTX 3090" product name. According to the spec sheet, this card features a total memory capacity of 12 GB GDDR6X, achieved through 12 memory chips with a 384-bit wide memory bus. As we saw today, only 11 of these seem to be populated on the RTX 3090, which, when paired with specifications for the GDDR6X memory chips being capable of 19-21 Gbps speeds, brings total memory subsystem bandwidth towards the 912 - 1008 GB/s range (using 12 chips; 11 chips results in 836 GB/s minimum). It's possible the RTX 3090 product name isn't an official NVIDIA product, but rather a Micron-guessed possibility, so don't look at it as factual representation of an upcoming graphics card. One other interesting aspect from the tech brief is that Micron expects their GDDR6X technology to enable 16 Gb (or 2 GB) density chips with 24 Gbps bandwidth, as early as 2021. You can read over the tech brief - which mentions NVIDIA by name as a development partner for GDDR6X - by following the source link and clicking on the "The Demand for Ultra-Bandwidth Solutions" document.

New Windows Update Allows GPU Selection - tech
(hx) 09:03 PM CEST - Aug,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft's future update to Windows 10 will add a GPU-aware selector that allows both the OS and the user to adaptively select the best GPU for each usage scenario. The preview release of Windows 10 build 20190 features this in two ways. First is an OS-level layer that automagically selects the best GPU for the task at hand between installed options (let's assume, an Intel iGPU and your discrete GPU). For web browsing or productivity it's expected the OS will switch to the less power-hungry option, whilst for gaming and its all-cylinders philosophy, it would launch the discrete option. However, if you're not much into ceding that kind of control to the OS itself, you can override which specific GPU is activated for a specific application. This change is made via the Settings panel with a drop down menu in Graphics Settings. This feature should be a particular boon for laptops that don't feature a power-saving technology that enables this kind of behavior, but there are some other usages for power users that might come in handy with this OS-level integration.

AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.8.1 Driver - tech
(hx) 08:50 AM CEST - Aug,05 2020 - Post a comment
AMD's latest graphics driver comes packed with improvements for a trio of new games, with Horizon Zero Dawn, Hyper Scape, and Grounded receiving official support with today's new Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.8.1 release. According to the company, Obsidian's newly released massively popular survival game Grounded will run up to 9% better using these drivers compared to the previous 20.7.2 version. The tests were done on a machine running an RX 5700 XT, though most of the products in the Radeon line should see improvements to FPS in some form. AMD didn't go into detail on what sort of enhancements does this release carry for the upcoming PC launch of Guerilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn or the Ubisoft battle royale Hyper Scape. However, this driver is recommended for anyone using a graphics card from the red team who's looking to jump into any of these new games.

Fixed Issues

  • With Radeon FreeSync enabled, task switching to another display or application may intermittently cause the desktop refresh rate to be locked to an arbitrary interval causing stuttering.
  • Streaming and recording features are not working or are failing to enable on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products in Windows® 7 system configurations.
  • Radeon Software may experience an application crash or hang when waking from sleep after joining the AMD User Experience program.
  • DOOM™ Eternal may experience a very dark or dim screen when changing V-Sync settings in game with HDR enabled.
  • Hot plugging a powered off HDMI display and then powering on the display, may intermittently cause a system crash or hang.
  • Enabling Instant Replay may rarely cause a system hang or TDR on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products.
  • Compatibility Advisor may show an “Unable to get requirements” error message when opened. Users will need to perform a factory reset of settings in Radeon Software for this fix to take effect.

Intel Overhauls its Corporate Identity - tech
(hx) 09:30 PM CEST - Jul,30 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
EVO is likely to become a prominent client-segment processor brand by Intel as it wades into the post-Core product generation. Intel just registered a large tranche of trademarks and logos with the USPTO. It begins with a re-design of Intel's corporate identity from the ground-up, including the company's main logo. A clean new typeface replaces the one Intel has been using since the original Core i7 from a decade ago. The brands are placed with simple geometric backgrounds with fewer color gradients. The brand extension (i3/i5/i7/i9) is located at the bottom-right corner. The distinction between two logos, "EVO Powered by Core" and just Core i3, caught our eye. We speculate that EVO could refer to a new category of Hybrid processors (chips with more than one kind of CPU core), and could debut with "Alder Lake." The non-EVO chips could have only one kind of CPU core, and given the timing of this trademark application (July 2020), we expect it to debut only with the processor that succeeds "Tiger Lake," as notebooks based on the new chips may already be under mass-production. In any case, it's only a matter of the notebook ODM (eg: Quanta, Compal, Foxconn, etc.,) placing a sticker on the product or its packaging. It's also interesting to note the "powered by Core" subtext in the EVO branding. Intel could be using this to transition between the two brands.
Intel has $82 Billion in shareholder equity, of which $8 Billion is in cold, hard cash. $44 Billion in "current assets" and only ~$22 Billion in liabilities. Intel today could spend $20 Billion on one moonshot project and still have money left over to continue their operations. In the short term, it is clear that Intel is screwing up their process. But a giant pile of $20 Billion+ can turn things around, as long as the board + executives do the right thing with it. Based on other companies (IBM, Sears, etc. etc.) that have entered long periods of decline... Intel could easily remain giant for a decade to come, coasting entirely on its cash pile alone. And who knows? Maybe Intel really can turn things around and return to dominance.

In other news, Intel is apparently seeking external assistance and it seems like a deal has already been struck with TSMC which is now believed to be the designated foundry that can assist with Intel's 7 nm chip production in 2021. Intel indicated that its own 7 nm production will end up delayed by at least 6 months due to design defects, plus we know that AMD is ready to launch 5 nm CPUs by next year, so now that Intel can tap external foundries, the delay may never occur. However, Intel’s manufacturing nodes are not exactly compatible with TSMC’s nodes. The upcoming 7 nm node from Intel is comparable to TSMC’s 5 nm node as far as transistor densities and yields are concerned, which means Intel actually needs to validate and supply necessary design changes so that TSMC can repurpose its 5 nm and 3 nm EUV nodes. Another DigiTimes source reports that TSMC could also help Intel with the 10 nm production for upcoming CPUs and GPUs. The node discrepancies are still there, so the 10 nm Intel process is actually similar to TSMC’s 6 nm process. The two companies will need to work together in order to redesign the photomasks for select 10 nm Intel CPUs and GPUs, ensuring the compatibility with TSMC’s nodes. Apparently, Intel already ordered 180,000 wafers to be produced on the TSMC 6 nm node in 2021.

Intel Core i9-10850K Officialy Clocked At 5.2GHz - tech
(hx) 01:13 PM CEST - Jul,28 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
A few weeks ago, I posted a news about Intel’s Core i9-10850K processor, which is a slight downgrade from the flagship Core i9-10900K. The chip is still part of the 14nm 10th generation Comet Lake-S desktop processor family, but is clocked 100MHz slower across base, boost, Turbo Boost 3.0 and Thermal Velocity Boost thresholds. Today, Intel officially announced the processor, along with its bulk pricing. Whereas the Core i9-10900K is priced at $488 in lots of 1,000 for OEMs, the Core i9-10850K is available at a $35 discount, coming in at $453. For OEMs that have encountered trouble getting their hands on the Core i9-10900K, the Core i9-10850K seems like a worthy consolation prize given its relatively small downgrade in performance. I should note that while Intel has listed bulk pricing for the Core i9-10850K at $453, retail boxed versions of the processor (BX8070110850K) will be making their way to store shelves soon. These will be a bit easier to obtain than the Core i9-10900K once released, and should be slightly cheaper as well. However retail pricing will be very probably higher than the bulk rates, so we might see the chip priced closer to +$500 for individuals.

Windows 10's latest update bug is breaking internet - tech
(hx) 08:53 AM CEST - Jul,26 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Windows 10 May 2020 Update has received fixes for major bugs in Microsoft’s monthly patches for July, but it looks like the update has yet another unpatched problem and it has been finally acknowledged by Microsoft. Microsoft has acknowledged that Windows 10 version 2004 is displaying false internet connection warnings for some PCs. Users have been reporting that a dreaded yellow triangle would appear on the system tray annoyingly reporting that they have “No Internet Access”. The error will appear when your device is connected to the router correctly but it would seem like Windows 10 cannot connect to the internet. “I’ve rebooted my laptop, reset the router and reinstalled the network wireless adaptor but still the same message,” one user noted, and others have also confirmed it. While you’ll be able to browse the web in your browser, it appears that apps such as Spotify, Cortana, Microsoft Store and even Feedback Hub rely on the Windows 10’s internet status to reach the servers. In other words, Spotify and other apps may not work when you have the false internet connection warning.

To fix the no internet connection warning after upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004, follow these steps:
1.Open Windows Search.
2.Look for ‘Registry Editor’.
3.Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNlaSvcParametersInternet”
4.Modify “EnableActiveProbing” and change the value from ‘0’ to ‘1’.
5.Click on ‘OK’.
6.Close Registry Editor.
7.Restart your computer.

Windows 10X Delayed to 2021, Loses Win32 Support - tech
(hx) 08:33 PM CEST - Jul,20 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Citing multiple sources, Mary Jo Foley reports that Microsoft has delayed Windows 10X to Spring 2021 and won’t rollout a dual-screen version until 2022. As Foley notes, Windows 10X is not a new operating system. Instead, it is a more modular hybrid of what Microsoft now calls Windows 10 desktop, one that will offer a simpler user experience and a new container-based model for backward compatibility. While Windows 10X was originally designed for familiar form factors like laptops and tablets, Microsoft in 2019 decided to push its use in more interesting dual-screen form factors in a bid to further differentiate it from Windows 10 desktop. But those plans hinged on too many moving parts, and with the core of Windows 10X both untested and unready, the firm decided to delay its release and focus on single-screen PCs earlier this year. Foley’s report is the first update we’ve gotten since Microsoft announced the delay and refocus. She says that the latest plan is to deliver Windows 10X with new single-screen devices in early 2021 and that this first release will not include the Win32 container technology that provides backward compatibility with legacy desktop applications. Instead, this system will operate much like Windows 10 in S mode and will run Store and web apps only. With this change, Win32 app support is now delayed to 2022 at the earliest. That year, Microsoft also expects to ship Windows 10X on new dual-screen PCs. Even better, Foley has heard that Microsoft may be stepping back from the feature update cliff and will shift from the current twice-per-year schedule to a once-per-year schedule in 2021 so that it can put more engineering staff on Windows 10X.

Jesus :-( Instead of adding resources to Windows 10 to stabilize the platform and fix issues that users complain about every time Windows 10 gets updated, Microsoft diverts those resources to work on an OS that no one is asking for. Do we really need another OS that can only run Windows store apps? Fuck you. Does anyone know who is doing so bad decisions there?
Microsoft Cloud PC is Coming in Spring 2021 - tech
(hx) 08:26 PM CEST - Jul,20 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
Mary Jo’s at it again: In addition to today’s news about Windows 10X, Ms. Foley today reported that Microsoft is working on a virtualized Windows desktop experience for thin clients called Microsoft Cloud PC. It’s expected in Spring 2021. As she writes, Cloud PC won’t replace Windows and Office on rich PCs for the foreseeable future. Instead, this new service will be option for businesses that wish to deploy low-end PCs that will behave in many ways like thin clients, with software delivered from the Azure cloud.
I found a  job description posted June 5 for a program manager for Microsoft's Cloud PC team on the company's careers site. The description of Cloud PC isn't super-detailed -- or surprising to anyone following Microsoft's virtualization strategy.

"Microsoft Cloud PC is a strategic, new offering that is built on top of Windows Virtual Desktop to delivering Desktop as a Service. At its core, Cloud PC provides business customers a modern, elastic, cloud-based Windows experience and will allow organizations to stay current in a more simplistic and scalable manner," the job description says.

Microsoft is planning to make Cloud PC a Microsoft-365-powered experience that is managed by Microsoft and sold for a flat per user price, the job description says. This pricing piece is key. Windows Virtual Desktop pricing revolves around Azure consumption. Cloud PC sounds like it will be available for a set subscription fee.

Microsoft had dropped a few hints recently that it was looking to create some kind of virtualized PC management experience. In February, Scott Manchester, who had been Group Program Manager for Windows Virtual Desktop, took on a new role as Group Program Manager for "Cloud Managed Desktops." I'm guessing that this team, along with Windows engineering, are the ones honing the Cloud PC vision and deliverables.

The biggest question here is when will Microsoft introduce its Cloud PC service/offering. I'm hearing this could happen as early as next spring, but Microsoft officials would not talk about Cloud PC at all and provided the "Microsoft will not comment on rumors and speculation" boiler-plate answer to my query.
Imagine a nightmare of streaming OS and Apps, no matter how fast connection you have it is a horrible experience. There is no in hell I would ever sign up for such garbage idea, and most Windows users are not going to do the same. Microsoft is going to lose Windows users very quickly. They are really working hard on pushing everyone to Linux along with Gaming industry and that's the end of Windows and Microsoft as we know it.

Intel Core i9-10850K Priced at $449 - tech
(hx) 08:28 AM CEST - Jul,17 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Intel's upcoming Core i9-10850K processor started appearing as a configurator option on Digital Storm pre-built gaming desktops. The 10-core/20-thread Socket LGA1200 processor comes with an unlocked multiplier, but is positioned between the $440 Core i9-10900 (locked) processor and the $499 i9-10900K flagship part. Intel differentiates the i9-10900K from the i9-10850K by stripping the latter of the Thermal Velocity Boost feature. The processor now has a maximum boost frequency of 5.20 GHz, and it gets there using the Turbo Boost Max 3.0 algorithm. The lack of TVB is attributable to the processor model numbering being i9-108xx rather than i9-109xx. Despite being locked parts, the i9-10900 and i9-10900F get TVB.

It's still not known if Intel will release the Core i9-10850K to the DIY retail channel, but the fact that it's surfacing on a pre-built vendor's site points to the possibility of the chip being OEM-exclusive. Thermal Velocity Boost is a cooling-sensitive feature, and hitting the advertised 5.30 GHz TVB frequency comes with steep cooling requirements for OEMs, which they probably could do with less of. The processor should still perform nearly on-par with the i9-10900K in most scenarios, including gaming.

Intel is finally retiring its 9th Gen Core-X Skylake-X series - tech
(hx) 09:13 PM CEST - Jul,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel has recently issued a new product change notification (PCN) in which the company has announced the discontinuation of its 9th Gen Core X series “Skylake-X” HEDT processors. The new PCH applies to all the Skylake-X processors based on the ‘LGA2066’ socket as well as the Xeon W-2000 series workstation processors, which also use the same socket, and are based on a similar IP. The new PCN covers the entire 9th-Gen Core-X chips including the big Core i9-9980XE. These include the boxed and tray versions of the i7-9800X, i9-9820X, i9-9900X, i9-9920X, i9-9940X, i9-9960X, i9-9980XE, and the Xeon W-2102, W-2104, W-2123, W-2125, W-2133, W-2135, W-2145, W-2155, W-2195 chips. This discontinuation doesn’t come as a surprise, since Intel has already had its 10th Generation ‘Cascade Lake X’ chips on the market for quite some time, which includes the flagship extreme Core i9-10980XE. All these SKUs will be slowly removed from the shelves. From January 22, 2021, Intel will no longer take any more orders for these processors.

Huawei Desktop PC with Kunpeng 920 Processor Teased - tech
(hx) 08:40 AM CEST - Jul,07 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Huawei has been readying the entire new breed of desktop PCs with a custom motherboard, custom processor, and even a custom operating system. Being that Huawei plans to supply Chinese government institutions with these PCs, it is logical to break away from US-made technology due to security reasons. And now, thanks to the YouTube channel called "????" we have the first look at the new PC system. Powered by Huawei D920S10 desktop motherboard equipped with Kunpeng 920 7 nm Arm v8 processor with 8 cores, the PC was running the 64-bit UOS operating system, which is a Chinese modification of Linux. In the test, the PC was assembled by a third-party provider and it featured 16 GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 memory and 256 GB SSD.

The YouTube channel put it to test and in the Blender BMW render test, it has finished in 11 minutes and 47 seconds, which is quite slow. The system reportedly managed to stream 4K content well but has struggled with local playback thanks to poor encoding. Being that it runs a custom OS with a custom processor, app selection is quite narrow. The app store for the PC is accessible only if you pay an extra 800 Yuan (~$115), while the mentioned system will set you back 7,500 Yuan (~$1,060). At the heart of this system is eight-core, eight threaded Kunpeng 920 2249K processor. It features a clock speed of 2.6 GHz, has 128K of L1 cache (64K instruction cache and 64K data cache), 512K of L2, and 32 MB of L3 cache.

In a blog post by Steve Pronovost, a tech lead with Microsoft DirectX, Microsoft finally set out to explain what WDDM GPU Scheduling is. Introduced with Windows Vista, WDDM 1.0 introduced GPU scheduling, a software component that allocates workload from multiple sources onto a GPU, prior to which all applications that needed GPU-acceleration would send as much traffic as they could to the GPU driver. With growing complexity in the modern 3D rendering pipeline, the need for a scheduler, not unlike the OS thread scheduler, was needed.

AMD Adrenalin 20.5.1 Beta driver - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Jun,29 2020 - Post a comment
A couple of days back, AMD quietly rolled out a feature update to its 20.5.1 Adrenalin driver adding support for hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (GHS) on select Navi GPUs. Henceforth, the RX 5700 and 5600 series graphics cards, on both desktop and mobile, ie, RX 5700, RX 5600, and RX 5700M, RX 5600M, will support this feature. Sadly, it means Polaris and Vega owners, as well as Ryzen APU owners, will have to wait for a bit longer to get this feature. GHS is a major feature of WDDM 2.7 introduced in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004, build 19041). Rival Nvidia added support for the feature in its latest driver version 451.48 a few days back and AMD has followed suit, albeit only selectively for now. So if you own a Navi GPU and want to try GHS, head over to the official release notes page here to download the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.5.1 Beta driver. Moreover, AMD's Radeon Software app on Windows can also be used to upgrade to this driver, but do make sure to enable "Optional" updates since this is a beta release.

Support For

  • Windows® May 2020 Update
    • AMD is excited to provide beta support for Microsoft's Graphics Hardware Scheduling feature. By moving scheduling responsibilities from software into hardware, this feature has the potential to improve GPU responsiveness and to allow additional innovation in GPU workload management in the future. This feature is available on Radeon RX 5600 and Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products.

Known Issues

  • Oculus™ VR headsets may not display content or may experience severe performance drops with Hardware Scheduling enabled.
  • Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.
  • Using Edge™ web browser to playback video content with a multi display system configuration may cause a system hang or crash after extended periods of use.
  • Performance Metrics Overlay and Radeon WattMan incorrectly report higher than expected idle clock speeds on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products. Performance and power consumption are not impacted by this incorrect reporting.
  • Some games may exhibit stutter intermittently during gameplay on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products.
  • Radeon RX Vega series graphics products may experience a system crash or TDR when performing multiple task switches using Alt+Tab.
  • Desktop or In-game corruption may occur intermittently when HDR is enabled.
  • Direct ML Media Filters are currently unavailable in Radeon Software Media gallery for video or image content.
  • Some users may still experience black screen or system hang issues during extended periods of gameplay. AMD will continue to monitor and investigate reports of these issues closely.
  • Some game titles may experience hitching when Instant Replay is enabled on Radeon RX 5000 series system configurations.

iOS 14 Promotes Widgets to Home Screen - tech
(hx) 11:53 PM CEST - Jun,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (24)
Apple has revealed iOS 14, which brings a number of new features to the OS for Apple's iPhones:

  • Widgets: Apple has promoted Widgets to the main home screen. Just as Android has always allowed, you can now mix re-sizable widgets in with your app icons. A special widget called Smart Stack collects several widgets into one rectangle that lets you scroll through multiple widgets while taking up minimal home screen space.
  • App Clips: A new kind of micro-app designed to let you complete a single transaction using a rich app interface, without installing a full app. App Clips are limited to 10 MB so they download quickly. App Clips can be launched from a Maps listing, a message, a QR code, or a new type of physical sticker that includes an NFC tag and a visual code similar to QR codes. App Clips can leverage Sign in with Apple and Apple Pay so users don't need to spend time creating a new account. App Clips can be used to order take-out or delivery, rent a scooter, pay for parking, and more. To help small businesses to take advantage of App Clips, Apple will work with larger services like Yelp to help them create App Clips for individual business listings.
  • App Library: A new screen past the right-most home screen with auto-generated folders of apps, including Suggestions, Recently Added, Arcade, Social, etc. To make it easier to access, you can now hide infrequently-used home screens.
  • Picture in Picture: Video apps can now display playing video in a floating window over other apps. (Android has supported this since 2017.)
  • Translate app: Apple now has its own dedicated app for language translation. In landscape orientation, it switches to a Conversation Mode, for seamless two-way conversation with someone while both people look at the display. It auto-detects the language for each phrase spoken. The app supports English, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian.
Apple has also updated Siri so it's no longer a full-screen experience every time it's activated. A small animation pops up at the bottom of the screen while it's listening, and many results pop up in a small box at the top, like a notification. Apple has also updated Maps to finally add directions for cycling, including elevation info. At launch, this feature is available in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Shanghai, and Beijing. Maps also now has dedicated features for electric cars. It can track your battery status and estimate range, as well as direct you to charging stations compatible with your specific car. At launch, it's compatible with BMW and Ford EVs. Finally, CarPlay now supports various wallpaper options, and supports new types of apps, including parking, EV charging, and fast food ordering. Apple is also adding a new indicator in the status bar to show when apps access your camera and/or microphone. Apple said iOS 14 will launch for consumers "this fall".

Update: Apple has released a full list of new features in iOS 14, which includes many not mentioned in today's WWDC keynote presentation. One notable new feature is a setting that will let users choose which app launches when a user clicks on a web link or email address. For example, in iOS 13, clicking on an email address always launches Apple's Mail app. In iOS 14, you will be able to set this to Gmail instead.

iOS 14 is compatible with these devices: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPod touch (7th generation).

Microsoft is pushing out its new Edge browser to Windows 7 and 8.1 - tech
(d@rkfu) 12:00 PM CEST - Jun,20 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
When Microsoft first announced general availability of its new Chromium-based Edge browser, it said that those on Windows 7 and 8.1 would have to install the browser manually if they wanted it. As it turns out, Microsoft is pushing it out over Windows Update anyway, according to a KB article published this week. There are a few key things that you need to know when you install this. First of all, it's going to add Edge to your taskbar and as a desktop shortcut. Also, it's not going to replace Internet Explorer like it replaces Edge Legacy on Windows 10. And finally, it won't change your default browser. This is a particularly interesting change for Windows 7 users, because the OS hasn't been supported since January. The only users that are supposed to get updates are those paying for Extended Security Updates; however, it seems that Microsoft is willing to pick up Edge users wherever it can.

Microsoft Extends its ATP Defender Protection to UEFI BIOS - tech
(hx) 04:52 PM CEST - Jun,19 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Microsoft has announced an extension to the Windows Defender System Guard which will allow it to also verify and guarantee integrity of systems at a UEFI BIOS level. Citing an increase in hardware and firmware-level attacks over the years, the extended protection functionality aims to guarantee protection across the entire hierarchy of a device, from firmware up through to cloud processing. The UEFI scanner is a new component of the built-in antivirus solution on Windows 10 and gives Microsoft Defender ATP the unique ability to scan inside of the firmware filesystem and perform security assessment. Working in conjunction with your systems' chipset, the UEFI scanner features a three-pronged solution to firmware security: UEFI anti-rootkit, which reaches the firmware through Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI); Full filesystem scanner, which analyzes content inside the firmware; and a Detection engine, which identifies exploits and malicious behaviors. This new tool aims to increase odds of detection for devices whose boot has already been compromised by rootkits or other kind of malware acting at the firmware level. The idea is to keep your boot flow secure and trustworthy, something that will almost certainly be rendered impossible by a rootkit messing with OS and software protection privileges to keep escalating their control over your machine.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update is causing login problems - tech
(hx) 12:31 AM CEST - Jun,16 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
It seems that few updates from Microsoft are without problems these days, so the fact that a big release such as Windows 10 May 2020 Update is causing issues should shock no one. A particularly annoying problem that is plaguing some people who have installed the update is that they are not automatically signed into their user account in Chrome. As an extension of this issue, website passwords are not being remembered. Problems have also been found with Edge and OneDrive forgetting credentials after upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004. Numerous reports have popped up on the Chrome support forum, with people complaining that Google Sync is broken, and that Chrome keeps signing them out of their accounts. As reported by Windows Latest, other related problems users are experiencing include data relating to browser extensions being deleted, and cookies not being saved.

Over on Reddit there are also complaints that after the installation of Windows 10 May 2020 Update, there are similar problems with Edge -- which is probably not surprisingly considering Edge and Chrome share the same engine these days. Other people are experiencing problems with OneDrive forgetting login details. There are also issues with Battle.net and the Windows 10 Mail app forgetting credentials.

Microsoft has not yet acknowledged the issues, but there is a potential workaround for Chrome users. Start by killing the Chrome.exe tasks, lock Windows by pressing the Windows key and L simultaneously, then log back in and launch Chrome again. It's not an ideal solution, but it is something of a help until a proper fix materializes.

Intel Ice Lake CPUs Have a System Crashing Bug - tech
(d@rkfu) 11:29 AM CEST - Jun,15 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel CPUs have been rather notorious for system bugs recently. Starting from 2018's Spectre and Meltdown which used speculative execution to exploit systems, the string of new vulnerabilities just continued to this day. Recently we had CrossTalk exploit which represents a threat to cloud providers, where one user could compromise another just by using the same CPU from which the virtual instances are powered. These types of exploits are even more dangerous than ones that require local access, as that is already dangerous by itself. A lot of these issues are said to be ironed out by Intel's new microarchitecture designs like Ice Lake, Tiger Lake, and future revisions. However, it seems like Intel is encountering some problems with even the latest Ice Lake CPUs when it comes to system bugs. JetBrains, a Czech provider of software development tools has a Java programming language development environment called IntelliJ integrated development environment. It was recently reported that on MacBook Air 2020 and Microsoft Surface Pro models equipped with 10th generation Intel Ice Lake CPUs, IntelliJ IDE causes system restart or a complete OS crash. In the report, the CPU ran in a Linux VM that isolates itself from MacOS so the macOS XNU kernel is not to blame. In the report thread, another user running Windows on Microsoft Surface Pro experienced the crash as well.

Developer Warns VR Headset Damaged Eyesight - tech
(hx) 05:44 PM CEST - Jun,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
Software developer Danny Bittman tweeted about how he's convinced that his eyesight was damaged from wearing a VR headset for hours a day. The BBC reports:
Danny Bittman, who has worked as a virtual reality developer for four years, suggested it could have affected his eyesight. "Just had my first eye doctor visit in three years. Now I'm very worried about my future VR use. I have a new eye convergence problem that acts like dyslexia. The doc, a headset owner, is convinced my VR use caused this. He said "these glasses we usually prescribe to 40-year-olds", he tweeted.

He went on to describe the problem: "My eyes jump when I read things like a screen or books. I've always had a small level of this but it's greatly intensified now. It's also linked to headaches and vertigo." He said that the issue was about "prolonged use", and admitted that he could spend up to six hours a day wearing a headset, split into 30-minute sessions. Ceri Smith-Jaynes, from the Association of Optometrists, told the BBC: "We currently do not have any reliable evidence that VR headsets cause permanent deterioration in eyesight in children or adults. There have been some studies looking into the effects of short-term use of VR headsets only; these did not reveal a deterioration in eyesight. "However, some people do suffer from temporary symptoms such as nausea, dry, irritable eyes, headache or eyestrain. " But she did have some advice about usage: "If you spend all day in VR without a break, you'll need time to readjust to the light and the different visual environment of the real world. I would suggest taking a five-to-ten minute break each hour, using that time to move about, blink and look out of a window, or take a short walk.
The key to understanding that is the quote from his doctor, "these glasses we usually prescribe to 40-year-olds." That's because EVERYONE develops presbyopia (aka "farsightedness"), if they live long enough. It's caused by the lens becoming too rigid for the muscles inside the eye to squeeze it sufficiently to allow it to properly focus up close. That's a normal consequence of aging, but it can also be brought on or accelerated (because presbyopia is progressive - the older you get, the worse it gets) by spending too many hours focusing on things at a close, unvarying distance over a long period of time. The link between long hours of staring into a computer monitor and developing premature presbyopia is firmly enough established that the American Optometric Association calls the condition Computer Vision Syndrome [aoa.org] or, alternatively Digital Eye Strain. Wearing a VR headset for hours and hours every day would be even worse, because, when you're staring into a monitor, you still wind up looking down at your keyboard, or off to one side or the other while you're thinking about what you're looking at, and even those brief glances allow your eyes to change their focal length, however briefly. Wearing a VR headset, you literally have nowhere else to look, so your eyes' focal length never varies. It looks like a lot of hype has been surrounding this Game lately. We have previously seen NVIDIA tease a Cyberpunk 2077 Edition RTX 2080 Ti graphics card, and some of these variants were actually selling for as high as $5000 on EBAY as well. Now, GOG is giving away a rare Cyberpunk 2077 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Graphics card. All you have to do is just describe Cyberpunk 2077 in 8 simple words, and the card will be yours! Not a word under or over, mind you ! You can’t mention “Cyberpunk 2077” either.

All you have to do is visit their forum, and then describe Cyberpunk 2077 in exactly 8 words. You can’t write 7, you can’t write 9 — it has to be just 8 simple words. Well, you can go and try out your luck on GOG’s official forum, but hurry, since you only have until June 15, 9am EST /1pm GMT/ 11pm AEST when the most “creative and unique” answer will be chosen by the GOG.com team.
