Apple's M1-Based MacBook Air Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Nov,12 2020 - Post a comment
When Apple announced that they are going to switch their Mac lineup from Intel-based x86 processors to the custom "Apple Silicon," everyone was wondering how the new processors will look and perform. To everyone's luck, Apple has just a few days ago announced its first Apple Silicon custom processor for MacBook. The M1, as the company calls it, is their first processor designed for higher-power and performance tasks The M1 features eight CPU cores (four high-performance and four-high efficiency) paired with eight cores dedicated to the graphics. On the die, there is also a 16-core neural engine made to accelerate machine learning tasks found in the new applications.

Today, we are getting the first GeekBench 5 CPU benchmarks that showcase just how far Apple has come with its custom design. What we have is the M1 processor found in MacBook Air. This Mac model features a passive cooling system, cooling a CPU with a base frequency of 3.2 GHz. The system scored 1719 points in the single-core result, and 6967 points in the multi-core result. The single-threaded results measure itself with some of the highest-end offerings from Intel and AMD, while the multi-threaded results are very good given the mix and match of small and big cores.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Landing in January at $999 - tech
(hx) 06:22 PM CET - Nov,11 2020 - Post a comment
According to the unknown manufacturer (AIB) based in Taiwan, NVIDIA is preparing to launch the new GeForce RTX 3000 series "Ampere" graphics card. As reported by the HKEPC website, the Santa Clara-based company is preparing to fill the gap between its top-end GeForce RTX 3090 and a bit slower RTX 3080 graphics card. The new product will be called GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. If you are wondering what the specification of the new graphics card will look like, you are in luck because the source has a few pieces of information. The new product will be based on GA102-250-KD-A1 GPU core, with a PG133-SKU15 PCB design scheme. The GPU will contain the same 10496 CUDA core configuration as the RTX 3090.

The only difference to the RTX 3090 will be a reduced GDDR6X amount of 20 GB. Along with the 20 GB of GDDR6X memory, the RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards will feature a 320-bit bus. The TGP of the card is limited to 320 Watts. The sources are reporting that the card will be launched sometime in January of 2021, and it will come at $999. This puts the price category of the RTX 3080 Ti in the same range as AMD's recently launched Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card, so it will be interesting to see how these two products are competing.

AMD Hurts Intel BAD - Ryzen 9 5900X vs 10900K Review and Benchmarks! - tech
(hx) 06:20 PM CET - Nov,06 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
The big AMD "Zen 3" architecture we've been hearing a lot about is finally here, and we have with us its most affordable part, the 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X. AMD claims that the 5600X is everything an AAA gamer would possibly want, and that the processor shouldn't get in the way of even premium 4K graphics cards.

AMD is debuting the Ryzen 5 5600X at a staggering $299, which is the highest launch price ever for a Ryzen 5-series processor, higher than what you'd pay for an 8-core 3700X. AMD states that the 5600X should have everything you need to build a gaming desktop for any resolution. Unlike the 5800X and 5900X which lack stock cooling solutions, AMD is including a cooler with the Ryzen 5. The chip has the same 95 W TDP as its predecessor, the 3600X, and is built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication node. The Ryzen 9 5900X is a 12-core/24-thread processor AMD is pricing at $549, about the same as the current Core i9-10900K street price (it originally launched at around $500). Ryzen 9 5900X's CPU cores are built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication process as the Ryzen 3000 "Zen 2" processor, but with several refinements to the microarchitecture. The biggest change with "Zen 3" has to be the company doing away with the 4-core CCX and unifying all cores of the CPU chiplet into a single 8-core CCX. Even within the CPU core, AMD has worked to reduce latencies, improved branch-prediction, optimized the execution engine, fattened the front-end and load/store units, and deployed faster caches, which has a direct impact on IPC, or single-thread performance. IPC is the single biggest contributor to gaming performance, and the 19% claimed IPC gain over "Zen 2" should mean AMD has taken the gaming crown since the "Zen 2" architecture wasn't too far behind "Comet Lake" at gaming to begin with.

Unlike the competition, AMD isn't launching a new chipset with Zen 3. Existing motherboards based on AMD 500-series or 400-series chipsets will work with the new Ryzen 5000 Series processors after a BIOS update.

NVIDIA Reportedly Working on GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - tech
(hx) 06:28 PM CET - Nov,04 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
A leak from renowned (and usually on-point) leaker Kopite7kimi claims that NVIDIA has finally settled on new graphics cards to combat AMD's RX 6800 threat after all. After the company has been reported (and never confirmed) to be working on double-memory configurations for their RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 graphics cards (with 16 GB GDDR6 and 20 GB GDDR6X, respectively), the company is now reported to have settled for a 20 GB RTX 3080 Ti to face a (apparently; pending independent reviews) resurgent AMD.

The RTX 3080 Ti specs paint a card with the same CUDA core count as the RTX 3090, with 10496 FP32 cores over the same 320-bit memory bus as the RTX 3080. Kopite includes board and SKU numbers (PG133 SKU 15) along a new GPU codename: GA102-250. The performance differentiator against the RTX 3090 stands to be the memory amount, bus, and eventually core clockspeed; memory speed and board TGP are reported to mirror those of the RTX 3080, so some reduced clocks compared to that graphics card are expected. That amount of CUDA cores means NVIDIA is essentially divvying-up the same GA-102 die between its RTX 3090 (good luck finding one in stock) and the reported RTX 3080 Ti (so good luck finding one of those in stock as well, should the time come). It is unclear how pricing would work out for this SKU, but pricing comparable to that of the RX 6900 XT is the more sensible speculation. Take this report with the usual amount of NaCl.

AMD started off October with a bang, announcing the new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs and now to close out the month, we’ve got official details on three new Radeon RDNA 2 GPUs – RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6800. All three GPUs are based on AMD’s new RDNA 2 architecture, delivering up to 65% more performance per watt compared to the original RDNA 1 architecture while using the same 7nm process. AMD has also been able to squeeze out an additional 30 percent in average clock speeds. Another interesting feature is Infinity Cache, which allows for more bandwidth while keeping power consumption down. This is a particularly big benefit for 4K gaming, where large amounts of data needs to move through the GPU memory. The AMD Radeon RX 6800XT features 72 compute units, 2015Mhz game clock, 2250Mhz boost clock, and 128MB Infinity Cache. It also comes with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and requires 300W total power. This GPU will be priced at $649, and will be available on November 18th. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 features 60 compute units, 1815Mhz game clock, 2105Mhz boost clock, and 128MB Infinity Cache. This 8K Monitor Costs HOW MUCH?! - tech
(hx) 06:38 PM CET - Oct,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (9)
With anything tech related, manufacturers are always striving to give you the very best product and Dell thinks that the UP3218K ticks that box. With production focussed tasks bigger than ever and GPUs catered specifically for 8K gaming like the RTX 3090, you’re going to need a monitor to utilise it but is it worth that hefty price tag?

While it's cool 4k is barely starting to get a bit more adopted so I think 8k is still something to look forward to 5-6 years from now!

NVIDIA Reportedly Cancels Launch of RTX 3080 20GB, RTX 3070 16GB - tech
(hx) 04:18 PM CEST - Oct,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Fresh reports floating in the rumor mill's circulatory system claim that NVIDIA backtracked on its plans to launch higher VRAM capacity versions of their RTX 3080 and the (in the meantime, delayed) RTX 3070. These cards launched with 10 GB VRAM for the RTX 3080 and 8 GB VRAM for the RTX 3070, with reports circulating as early as their announcement that there would be double-capacity versions hitting the market just a few months later - specifically, in December of this year. Videocardz, however, claims that these long-rumored 20 GB and 16 GB SKUs have now been canceled by NVIDIA, who sent this news to its AIB partners - and the usage of canceled, not postponed, is perfunctory. For cards theoretically shipping come December, this is indeed a small advance notice, but it might be enough for AIB partners to feed all their GA102-200 (RTX 3080) and GA104-400 (RTX 3070) silicon towards the already - if not readily - available models. This report, Videocardz claims, has been confirmed by two of their sources, and comes at the exact same day specifications for AMD's RX 6000 series leaked. It's likely NVIDIA already had knowledge of its competition's designs and performance targets, however, so this could be seen as nothing more than a coincidence. One of the publications' sources claims GDDR6X yields might be the cause for the cancellation, but this doesn't help explain why the alleged RTX 3070 16 GB card (with its GDDR6 chips) was also canceled. Remember: these are rumors on cards that were never announced by NVIDIA themselves, so take these with the appropriate salt-mine level of skepticism.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Benchmarked - tech
(d@rkfu) 11:26 PM CEST - Oct,19 2020 - Post a comment
Since AMD announced its next-generation Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors based on Zen 3 core, everyone has been wondering how the new processors perform. For a detailed review and performance numbers, you should wait for official reviews. However, today we have the scores of Ryzen 5 5600X CPU. Thanks to the popular hardware leaker @TUM_APISAK, the Ryzen 5 5600X performance numbers in the SiSoftware Sandra benchmark suite have been leaked. When digging under the hood, the new Ryzen CPU contains six of Zen 3 cores with 12 threads, paired with as much as 32 MB of level three (L3) cache. These cores are running at 3.7 GHz base frequency, while the boost speeds are reaching 4.6 GHz.

In the test results, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU has scored Processor Arithmetic and Processor Multi-Media scores of 255.22 GOPS and 904.38 Mpix/s. These scores are not much on their own until we compare them to some of the Intel offerings. When compared to the Intel Core i5-10600K CPU, which is likely its targeted competing category, it scores 224.07 GOPS and 662.33 Mpix/s for Processor Arithmetic and Processor Multi-Media tests respectively. This puts the AMD CPU ahead 13.9% and 36.5% in these tests, indicating the possibility of Zen 3. Another important note here is the thermal headroom both of these CPUs run. While the Intel model is constrained withing 125 W TDP, the AMD model runs at just 65 W TDP. This could be an indication of the efficiency that these new processors harness.

Microsoft xCloud May Bypass Apple App Store with Web App - tech
(hx) 12:35 AM CEST - Oct,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft is reportedly planning to release a "direct browser-based solution" to bring their Xbox Game Pass xCloud streaming service to iOS and iPadOS devices targeting a 2021 launch according to sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft has faced numerous issues with bringing the service to Apple devices due to App Store policies requiring each game to be uploaded as a separate application for review. Microsoft has previously stated that this solution is unacceptable and they would be investigating other options, they seem to have concluded that a web app would be the best route forwards. This approach is very similar to Amazon's Luna game streaming service which will also utilize a web app for access on Apple devices.

Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees at an all-hands meeting on Wednesday the company is planning to bring Game Pass to Apple's iPhone and iPad, targeting 2021 for the potential release of a "direct browser-based solution," Business Insider has learned.

"We absolutely will end up on iOS," Spencer told employees, according to two people with direct knowledge of his comments. Microsoft did not comment at the time of publication. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Microsoft last month added a key new feature to Game Pass, its Netflix-style subscription service that gives Xbox and PC gamers access to a vast catalogue of games. Now, Game Pass subscribers can stream many of the included titles directly to their Android phones or tablets, no console required.

Notable by its absence at the feature's launch was support for Apple's iPhone and iPad. An Apple spokesperson told Business Insider this summer that doesn't allow for game streaming in apps like Game Pass or Google's Stadia because it is unable to review each game in the services' respective libraries.

AMD Ryzen 5000 release date, price and specs - tech
(hx) 08:16 PM CEST - Oct,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD has officially unveiled its Ryzen 5000 processors in an online event that really went hard in highlighting the gaming capabilities of these new processors, with CEO Lisa Su stating that “gaming begins with AMD”. The first Ryzen 5000 CPU AMD showed off was the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, a high-end processor which will come with 12 cores, 24 threads and a 4.8GHz boost. It will have a 105W TDP. It will cost $549 when it launches November 5. Gamers can expect average performance improvement of 26% at 1080p, compared to the AMD Ryzen 3900XT, according to the company. Zen 3, if you're wondering, is the name of the architecture the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will be based on. AMD then also showed off the monster AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, a 16-core, 32 thread CPU with a 4.9GHz boost, 72 MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP, which will sell at a seriously competitive $799. We also found out about the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and the 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 5600X as well. Based on a 7nm+ manufacturing process, AMD Ryzen 5000 desktop processors could be tremendously powerful and potentially push clock speeds high enough to really make Intel hurt, especially if Team Blue stays stuck at 14nm on desktop. At the October 8 launch, CEO Lisa Su announced that the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will all launch on November 5, 2020. Thankfully, that's not too far away at all, and hopefully stock will be plentiful, so everyone who wants one, can buy one.

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600: $199 (about £160, AU$290)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G: $149 (£139, AU$240)
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3300G: $99 (£94, AU$144)

AMD Ryzen 5000 specs

We finally know the specs of the following AMD Ryzen 5000 processors:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X: 16-core, 32 thread, 4.9GHz boost, 72 MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X: 12-core, 24 thread, 4.8GHz boost, 70MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X: 8-core, 16 thread, 4.7GHz boost, 36MB cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: 6-core, 12-thread, 4.6GHz boost, 35MB cache, 65W TDP

On paper, these AMD Ryzen 5000 specs look pretty darn excellent, combined with their affordable price tags. At the October 8 launch, AMD talked up the new CPUs performance, with the "AMD Ryzen 9 5900X [offering] up to a 26% generational uplift in gaming performance" compared to the last gen.

It also claims that the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X has "the highest single-thread performance of any desktop gaming processor" and the "most multi-core performance of any desktop gaming processor and any desktop processor in a mainstream CPU socket."

Meanwhile, the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, according to the company, is on average "7% faster in 1080p gaming across select game titles than the competition," which AMD claims is the Intel Core i9-10900K. This is a 10-core CPU which sold for $488 (about £400, AU$750), which is slightly cheaper than what AMD is asking for.

Windows 10 to support hardware-accelerated AV1 playback - tech
(hx) 10:42 AM CEST - Oct,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
This fall, Microsoft’s hardware partners are rolling out hardware accelerated AV1 video support on new Windows 10 systems with the latest GPUs. With video consuming an ever-increasing portion of the world's internet traffic, better compression technology helps to improve video image quality while also reducing bandwidth consumption. AV1, which is developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), can reach 50% better compression than H.264 and 20% better than VP9 for the same video content. Enabling hardware support for AV1 allows users to get the benefits of this improved video codec, and shifting decode work from software to hardware typically reduces power consumption and increases battery life on mobile devices.

Here are the components required to experience hardware accelerated AV1 video on Windows 10:

Once you have those pieces in place, you will see the benefits of hardware accelerated AV1 video as streaming services roll out more video content encoded with AV1.

If you want to look under the hood to see when you are receiving AV1, some streaming services have ways to show this information. For example, on YouTube you can right-click on the video and select “Stats for nerds”. When the video is AV1 encoded, you will see “av01…” in the “Codecs” line on the stats overlay.

AMD continues to achieve a win in the CPU market, with Steam’s latest Hardware Survey now reporting a 25% market share for AMD processors, which marks a new milestone for the Red Team. AMD will officially announce its next-gen Zen 3-based CPU lineup on October 8, and the company has been decidedly marketing these Ryzen 5000 series Zen 3 CPUs as gaming processors. Valve’s gaming platform STEAM does a random survey asking users to post data about their hardware. Of course, the data is not perfectly representative of the market as a whole, but it still paints a picture of the current market trend. According to the latest data AMD made up 22.45 percent of registered CPUs in May this year, and that number has been growing by about 0.8-1 percentage points every month. Intel still takes the crown with a share of nearly 74 percent. AMD will officially announce its next-gen Zen 3-based CPU lineup on October 8, and the company has been decidedly marketing these Ryzen 5000 series Zen 3 CPUs as gaming processors.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Launch Postponed - tech
    (hx) 11:00 PM CEST - Oct,02 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
When NVIDIA introduced its Ampere consumer graphics cards, they launched three models - the GeForce RTX 3070, RTX 3080, and RTX 3090 GPUs. Both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 have seen the light of the day as they are now available for purchase, however, one card has remained. The GeForce RTX 3070 launch was originally planned for October 15th launch, but it has officially been postponed by NVIDIA. According to the company, the reason behind this sort of delay in the launch is the high demand expected. Production of the cards is ramping up quickly and the company is quickly stocking up the cards. Likely, NVIDIA AIBs are taking their time to stock up on cards, as the mid-range is usually in very high demand.

As a reminder, the GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card features 5888 CUDA cores running at a base frequency of 1.5 GHz and boost frequency of 1.73 GHz. Unlike the higher-end Ampere cards, the RTX 3070 uses older GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus with a bandwidth of 448 GB/s. The GPU features a TDP of 220 W and will be offered in a range of variants by AIBs. You will be able to purchase the GPU on October 29th for the price of $499.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.9.2 - tech
    (hx) 07:51 AM CEST - Sep,30 2020 - Post a comment
Hot on the heels of NVIDIA's latest driver release comes AMD's Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.9.2, an update for Radeon graphics hardware. Very much a 'nuts and bolts' revision to the driver stack, RSAE 20.9.2 prioritizes fixed issues and support for Vulkan over new consumer features, but also addresses the expected stability for this week's biggest videogame launch. On October 2nd EA will release Star Wars: Squadrons, the latest title springing from Disney's gargantuan IP and first in a long while in the first-person spaceship combat genre. In common with all first-person titles, performance - that is to say smooth and high average framerates - will be critical to the experience of players, and AMD aim to meet their needs on PCs with AMD Radeon graphics hardware as soon as the load up the game for the first time. AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.9.2 offers day-0 optimisations for Star Wars: Squadrons, hopefully resulting in excellent stability and frame rates. The revision continues AMD's run of solid day-0 driver updates, despite the challenging nature of software development in the current global climate. The second highlighted aspect of this driver launch is support for new Vulkan API extensions VK_KHR_buffer_device_address, VK_EXT_robustness2 and VK_EXT_shader_image_atomic_int64. Although chiefly a developer feature, they will no-doubt be important to consumers for future games developed with Vulkan. Finally, the new drivers incorporate 13 headline fixes to issues identified in the previous driver(s), as well as identifying a selection of problems next on the chopping block. In particular, the expected launch of World of Warcraft's Pre-Expansion Patch (9.0) in the coming weeks, with a concurrent increase to its active player counts, put a fix to corruption when using a DX12 render mode all the more time-sensitive.

    Fixed Issues

    • A black screen, system crash or TDR may occur while gaming when performing task switches, enabling performance metrics overlay, or having video content/web browsers open on secondary displays on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products system configurations.
    • Project CARS 3™ may experience performance issues when the Radeon Software performance metrics overlay is enabled.
    • Error 1603 may occur during Radeon Software installation on some AMD Ryzen™ 5 Mobile Processors with Radeon™ Graphics system configurations.
    • Error 195 may occur during Radeon Software installation on some AMD Ryzen™ 3 Mobile Processors with Radeon™ Vega Graphics.
    • On some displays, power cycling the display while Radeon FreeSync is enabled may cause the display to remain black until the system is rebooted or the display is hot plugged.
    • Flickering may occur in Borderlands™ 3 in some locations when Radeon Boost is enabled.
    • Decoding some HEVC content using AMF Decoder may result in corruption in the clips playback.
    • Performance Tuning fan profiles may sometimes not be applied after loading a saved profile.
    • Radeon Software may sometimes crash or automatically exit when performing a game scan in the Gaming tab.
    • Random color corruption may intermittently occur on some surfaces while playing matchmaking in Counter-Strike™: Global Offensive.
    • Notifications may be missing icons or text when hotkeys are used to invoke some Radeon Software streaming and recording features.
    • Brightness flickering may be experienced on some VP9 video content playback through applications or web browsers on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics product system configurations.

Xbox Series X Requires Nearly 200GB of Storage for System - tech
    (hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Sep,28 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
According to GameSpot, who already has an Xbox Series X in their possession, the 1TB drive that the console has installed needs nearly one-fifth of that space for the basic files attached to the console. In total, 198GB of the Xbox Series X are needed for the platform’s operating system and other various files. This means that in reality, 802GB are then left open for you to install games and other applications that you might download. It’s worth noting that the version of the console that GameSpot has in its hands might not be finalized just yet though, so these numbers could change by launch day. In some ways, this is to be expected. With video games as a whole getting larger over time, it’s not a shock that the general operating system of the Xbox Series X is going to be larger than what we’re used to as well. On the downside, it sure seems like the Series X could run out of space pretty darn quickly. 800GB isn’t a lot by modern standards and, as mentioned, if game sizes keep getting larger, that storage is going to diminish very fast. Considering the expandable storage options for Xbox Series X and S also cost a staggering $220, it sure seems like we’ll have to do more management than normal in this upcoming generation. Both the Xbox Series X and S are due out in a little over a month on November.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti will launch after RTX 3070 - tech
    (hx) 08:01 PM CEST - Sep,27 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
Videocardz’s sources have claimed that the RTX 3060 Ti Ampere card will be launching soon after the RTX 3070. This should be the first budget mainstream offering from NVIDIA and will feature a new GA104-200 GPU core. The RTX 3060 Ti will be the next GPU to get released in the Ampere lineup.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti will feature GA104-200 GPU with 4864 CUDA cores (1024 cores or 8 SMs fewer than RTX 3070). Similarly to RTX 3070, this model will feature 8GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14 Gbps. The bus width will remain at 256-bits and this should provide 448 GB/s of bandwidth.

Naturally, this model will require less power. We are told that custom boards are rated at 200W, which implies that the reference board is somewhere near 180W. If this number is correct then RTX 3060 Ti will consume slightly more power than RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 SUPER, both rated a 175W.

The launch date has not yet been confirmed, but internal roadmaps point toward the end of October. We might hear more about this SKU at GeForce RTX 3070 launch. We are not sure entirely why NVIDIA decided to launch the Ti model first, but one would guess that AMD might have a strong mid-range offer where RTX 3060 would simply not offer a firm competition.

Manufacturers response on NVIDIA RTX 3080 issues during gaming - tech
    (d@rkfu) 08:14 PM CEST - Sep,26 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
In the past few days there have been reports of several crashes/CTDs, and random black screen issues while Gaming, with factory-overclocked custom NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards. The issues were reported on several tech forums and also social media platforms. Users have been experiencing severe crashes during Gaming sessions. According to posts made on various Forums, the card seems to crash to the desktop while gaming, which is commonly referred to as CTD. Some users have also reported black screen issues as well, where the GPU driver simply bugs out. Many users claimed that the crash occurs when the GPU tries to exceed a boost clock value of 2.0 GHz. The problem was widespread. On September 25th igor’s LAB published the first analysis of the problem, suggesting that the capacitors/CAPs used in the GPU are the main culprit. The capacitors can be seen at the back of the GPU, since most of these cards don’t have a backplate. The reference board PG132 design was used as base design by AIB partners to architecture their custom cards. But the issue here is that apparently NVIDIA’s BOM/ bill of materials left an open choice in terms of power cleanup and regulation in the mounted capacitors. The Base Design actually features six mandatory capacitors for filtering high frequencies on the GPU voltage rails, NVVDD and MSVDD. There are a number of choices for capacitors to be installed here, with varying levels of capability. The better the filtering the less likely the GPU is to encounter any crash or instability issue at high GPU clock frequencies, including factory-overclocking. The point that Igor makes about improper power design causing instability is a very plausible one. Especially with first production runs where it indeed could be the case that they did not have the time/equipment/driver etc to do proper design verification.

An electrical engineer who specializes in PCB design @Mirrormaster85 has posted more info on these capacitors. At this time, NVIDIA has not responded back. But the chaps over at DSOGaming have some statements from some AIBs.
    COLORFUL:

The manufacturer was the first to report on a issue unofficially to the press. Review samples that were already sent out, were later recalled.

    EVGA:

“Recently there has been some discussion about the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 series.

During our mass production QC testing we discovered a full 6 POSCAPs solution cannot pass the real world applications testing. It took almost a week of R&D effort to find the cause and reduce the POSCAPs to 4 and add 20 MLCC caps prior to shipping production boards, this is why the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 series was delayed at launch. There were no 6 POSCAP production EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 boards shipped.

But, due to the time crunch, some of the reviewers were sent a pre-production version with 6 POSCAP’s, we are working with those reviewers directly to replace their boards with production versions.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 XC3 series with 5 POSCAPs + 10 MLCC solution is matched with the XC3 spec without issues. Also note that we have updated the product pictures at EVGA.com to reflect the production components that shipped to gamers and enthusiasts since day 1 of product launch. Once you receive the card you can compare for yourself, EVGA stands behind its products! — Jacob Freeman, EVGA Forums.”

    ASUS:

ASUS has changed the design in pre-production. No official statement was made.

    MSI:

MSI acknowledged the issue during the MSI Insider Livestream, suggested it could be a driver issue.

    ZOTAC:

Igor’sLAB reports that PC Partner, Zotac’s mother company, seems to have recognized this and is obviously changing its cards.

    GIGABYTE, GALAX and other brands:

No official statement, at this time of writing. Check back again for any updates.

Personally, I suspect that any major revisions will not make it to mainstream until November/December, or even not until after the new year, since all the early batches (including the "more incoming stock" being promised) were produced according to the original, finalized setup that's currently in the wild, and it'll take a bit of time to sort out the issues and get that change passed in the manufacturing process. And we're still dealing with a human virus that's still hampering the world's recovery.

Windows XP source code allegedly leaked online - tech
    (hx) 11:36 PM CEST - Sep,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
Source code of several older Windows versions, including Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000, have been leaked online by a hacker on the 4Chan platform in the form of a torrent file. The entire torrent file containing the source code is 43GB in size, and the person behind the alleged leak has been collecting and compiling leaked Microsoft source codes for the past two months. For the uninitiated, source code is a set of human-readable instructions of a program before it is compiled. This pre-compiled version is often written in a text editor and then fed into a compiler to turn it into machine language. Most big tech companies safeguard their source codes by filing proprietary rights to them. Users on 4Chan posted screenshots of the allegedly leaked source code of Windows XP and the iconic Bliss Background of the Windows operating system. In addition to the 43GB file, a file with 7zip extension containing the source code of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 has spread on the internet by 4Chan users and Redditors and is now available as a torrent file on several platforms. Microsoft has yet to confirm whether the leaked data is legitimate. But if you're interested in the subject, combing through the files may be interesting, as this is a newer version of Windows than what we've seen leaked in the past.
RTX 3080 Users Report Crashes to Desktop While Gaming - tech
    (hx) 08:07 AM CEST - Sep,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
A number of RTX 3080 users have been reporting crashes to desktop while gaming on their newly-acquired Ampere graphics cards. The reports have surged in numerous hardware discussion venues (LinusTechTips, NVIDIA, THG's forum), and appear to be unlinked to any particular RTX 3080 vendor (ZOTAC, MSI, EVGA, and NVIDIA Founders Edition graphics cards are all mentioned).

Apparently, this crash to desktop happens once the RTX 3080's Boost clock exceeds 2.0 GHz. A number of causes could be advanced for these issues: deficient power delivery, GPU temperature failsafes, or even a simple driver-level problem (though that one seems to be the least likely). Nor NVIDIA nor any of its AIB partners have spoken about this issue, and review outlets failed to mention this happening - likely because it never did, at least on samples sent to reviewers. For now, it seems that manually downclocking the graphics card by 50-100 MHz could be a temporary fix for the issue while it's being troubleshooted. An unlucky turn of events for users of NVIDIA's latest and greatest, but surely it's better to face a very slight performance decrease in exchange for system stability.

GeForce RTX 3090 is only 10-15% faster than the RTX 3080 - tech
    (hx) 05:22 PM CEST - Sep,24 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
NVIDIA has just published a new blog post detailing the performance of the upcoming flagship RTX 3090 GPU, which Nvidia refers to as the ‘BFGPU’, aka big, ferocious GPU. Some official performance metrics have been posted. According to the green team, the GeForce RTX 3090 flagship GPU is only 10-15% faster than the RTX 3080 in 4K gaming. Nvidia claims the card is designed specifically for gaming at ultra-high resolutions such as 8K, and it is also the fastest GPU for professional applications. What this means is that the RTX 3090 is basically a prosumer-class product.
For gamers pushing the limits, the GeForce RTX 3090 is also the first GPU that lets you connect, play, capture, and watch in 8K HDR. That’s an insane 4x the pixels of 4K and 16x the pixels of 1080p.

For 4K gaming, the GeForce RTX 3090 is about 10-15% faster on average than the GeForce RTX 3080, and up to 50% faster than the TITAN RTX.

Since we built GeForce RTX 3090 for a unique group of users, like the TITAN RTX before it, we want to apologise upfront that this will be in limited supply on launch day. We know this is frustrating, and we’re working with our partners to increase the supply in the weeks to come.
Since Nvidia is now advertising the RTX 3090 flagship TITAN-class graphics card for productivity, while at the same time promoting it for 8K gaming as well, so this may raise some slightly controversy within board partners, reviewers, and gamers alike. Like mentioned before, the RTX 3090 is only 10 to 15% faster in 4K gaming, when comparing it with the RTX 3080 GPU. But the performance of the card appears to be much better in synthetic and productivity workloads. According to Nvidia, the RTX 3090 is up to 50% faster than the Titan RTX graphics card. Nvidia has also shared a chart which shows the GeForce RTX 3090 to be twice as fast as the Titan RTX in professional applications such as Luxmark, Blender, V-ray, and Red Shift,
