AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.11.3 drivers - tech
(hx) 12:21 PM CET - Dec,01 2020 - Post a comment
AMD late Monday released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition. Version 20.11.3 beta adds support for Vulkan Ray Tracing Extensions. Additionally, the drivers add optimization for Immortals: Fenyx Rising. The drivers also address a fairly long list of issues. For starters, it addresses lower performance observed for the RX 6800 series GPUs on Watch Dogs Legion and DiRT 5; and low performance noticed for the RX 5000 and older GPUs on Godfall. Some character models facing display corruption in Crysis Remastered on RX 6800 series has been fixed. Intermittent game crashes with Troy: A Total War Saga, and WoW Shadowlands have been fixed. A bug that caused WoW Shadowlands to fail to launch on Windows 7 machines with DirectX 12 renderer selected, has been fixed. Some intermittent game crashes seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with DXR enabled on RX 6800 series, have been fixed. Doom Eternal with HDR enabled disabling HDR on Windows 10, has been fixed. Certain issues found with Adobe Illustrator and AIDA 64 have been fixed. Some display corruption issues with RDR2 using RX 6800 series at 1080p, has been fixed.
Support For
  • Immortals: Fenyx Rising
  • Vulkan raytracing Extensions
Added Vulkan Support
  • VK_KHR_fragment_shading_rate: This extension provides the ability to change the shading rate per fragment. This extension allows for multiple pixels to be shaded via a single fragment shader invocation as opposed to the normal rate of one invocation per pixel.
  • VK_KHR_acceleration_structure: This extension provides acceleration structures for representing geometry that is spatially sorted. Acceleration structures are the most common way for quickly identifying potential ray intersections by raytracing techniques.
  • VK_KHR_ray_tracing_pipeline: This extension introduces raytracing pipelines along with new shader domains and an indirection table to link shader groups with acceleration structures.
  • VK_KHR_ray_query: This extension introduces ray queries, which can be used by any shader type outside of the optional dedicated ray tracing pipeline to return traversal results to the calling shader.
  • VK_KHR_deferred_host_operations: This extension defines the infrastructure and usage patterns for deferrable commands, which allows dependent extensions to defer their own operations. The VK_KHR_deferred_host_operations extension itself does not specify any commands as deferrable.
  • VK_KHR_pipeline_library: This extension introduces pipeline libraries. A pipeline library is a new special pipeline type that defines a set of pipeline states. It cannot be bound, rather it can be linked into other pipelines.
  • VK_KHR_shader_terminate_invocation: This extension indicates support for the SPV_KHR_terminate_invocation SPIR-V extension. The SPIR-V extension introduces a new instruction OpTerminateInvocation that allows a shader invocation to immediately terminate, which provides the behavior required by the GLSL discard statement.
Fixed Issues
  • Lower than expected performance may be experienced on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products in Watchdogs: Legion and Dirt 5.
  • Lower than expected performance may be experienced on Radeon RX 5000/500/400 series graphics products in Godfall.
  • Godfall is not detected or listed in Radeon Software gaming tab.
  • Crysis Remastered may experience corruption on character models on Radeon RX 6800 Series graphics products.

Microsoft could be developing a way to run Android apps authentically on Windows - tech
(hx) 09:31 AM CET - Nov,29 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft's ambitious project is codenamed Latte, according to Windows Central. The report adds that Microsoft is planning to announce Latte next year, aiming to release it as part of the Windows 10 Fall 2021 update.

Project Latte aims to deliver a similar product, and is likely powered by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL.) Microsoft will need to provide its own Android subsystem for Android apps to actually run, however. Microsoft has announced that WSL will soon get support for GUI Linux applications, as well as GPU acceleration which should aid the performance of apps running through WSL. It's unlikely that Project Latte will include support for Play Services, as Google doesn't allow Play Services to be installed on anything other than native Android devices and Chrome OS. This means that apps which require Play Services APIs will need to be updated to remove those dependencies before they can be submitted on Windows 10.

Today, users can run Android apps on their PCs via app streaming using the Your Phone app built into Windows 10, but this functionality has been limited to a handful of Samsung devices and isn't always reliable. Being able to install and run Android apps locally on your PC will provide a much better experience and won't depend on what phone you have. Project Latte will allow app developers to bring over apps that don't already have a Windows version available. I'll be interested to see what kind of apps show up if Project Latte ever ships, as many Android apps are primarily designed for phones and are less desirable on anything larger than a phone-sized screen. Microsoft has made it clear in the last couple of years that it no longer considers native Windows apps as the be-all end-all when it comes to app development on the platform. Microsoft now welcomes many app platforms, including PWA, UWP, Win32, Linux (via WSL) and soon, Android apps.

TSMC Completes Its Latest 3nm Factory - tech
(hx) 05:58 PM CET - Nov,27 2020 - Post a comment
They say that it is hard to keep up with Moore's Law, however, for the folks over at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), that doesn't seem to represent any kind of a problem. Today, to confirm that TSMC is one of the last warriors for the life of Moore's Law, we have information that the company has completed building its manufacturing facility for the next-generation 3 nm semiconductor node. Located in Southern Taiwan Science Park near Tainan, TSMC is expecting to start high-volume manufacturing of the 3 nm node in that Fab in the second half of 2022. As always, one of the first customers expected is Apple. Estimated to cost an amazing 19.5 billion US Dollars, the Fab is expected to have an output of 55,000 300 mm (12-inch) wafers per month. Given that the regular facilities of TSMC exceed the capacity of over 100K wafers per month, this new facility is expected to increase the capacity over time and possibly reach the 100K level. The new 3 nm node is going to use the FinFET technology and will deliver a 15% performance gain over the previous 5 nm node, with 30% decreased power use and up to 70% density increase. Of course, all of those factors will depend on a specific design.

Google extends Chrome support for Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 09:14 PM CET - Nov,23 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Good news for everyone who still prefers Windows 7 over newer versions of the operating system. Google has extended Chrome support for the venerable OS by another six months, giving businesses whose plans to migrate to Windows 10 were put on hold because of the pandemic more breathing space. Despite Windows 7 reaching its end of extended support period for non-paying users in January, it's still found on around a fifth of all Windows machines. Part of the reason for the slow decline is the pandemic; with businesses' IT departments having to deal with the shift to remote work, new security protocols, and other related projects, moving onto Windows 10 became less of a priority.

Before the pandemic, Google said that it would continue to update Chrome on Windows 7 for 18 months after the latter's end of extended support date, which would have taken us to July 2021. Now, security updates have been extended to at least January 2022.

Apple's M1-Based MacBook Air Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Nov,12 2020 - Post a comment
When Apple announced that they are going to switch their Mac lineup from Intel-based x86 processors to the custom "Apple Silicon," everyone was wondering how the new processors will look and perform. To everyone's luck, Apple has just a few days ago announced its first Apple Silicon custom processor for MacBook. The M1, as the company calls it, is their first processor designed for higher-power and performance tasks The M1 features eight CPU cores (four high-performance and four-high efficiency) paired with eight cores dedicated to the graphics. On the die, there is also a 16-core neural engine made to accelerate machine learning tasks found in the new applications.

Today, we are getting the first GeekBench 5 CPU benchmarks that showcase just how far Apple has come with its custom design. What we have is the M1 processor found in MacBook Air. This Mac model features a passive cooling system, cooling a CPU with a base frequency of 3.2 GHz. The system scored 1719 points in the single-core result, and 6967 points in the multi-core result. The single-threaded results measure itself with some of the highest-end offerings from Intel and AMD, while the multi-threaded results are very good given the mix and match of small and big cores.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Landing in January at $999 - tech
(hx) 06:22 PM CET - Nov,11 2020 - Post a comment
According to the unknown manufacturer (AIB) based in Taiwan, NVIDIA is preparing to launch the new GeForce RTX 3000 series "Ampere" graphics card. As reported by the HKEPC website, the Santa Clara-based company is preparing to fill the gap between its top-end GeForce RTX 3090 and a bit slower RTX 3080 graphics card. The new product will be called GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. If you are wondering what the specification of the new graphics card will look like, you are in luck because the source has a few pieces of information. The new product will be based on GA102-250-KD-A1 GPU core, with a PG133-SKU15 PCB design scheme. The GPU will contain the same 10496 CUDA core configuration as the RTX 3090.

The only difference to the RTX 3090 will be a reduced GDDR6X amount of 20 GB. Along with the 20 GB of GDDR6X memory, the RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards will feature a 320-bit bus. The TGP of the card is limited to 320 Watts. The sources are reporting that the card will be launched sometime in January of 2021, and it will come at $999. This puts the price category of the RTX 3080 Ti in the same range as AMD's recently launched Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card, so it will be interesting to see how these two products are competing.

AMD Hurts Intel BAD - Ryzen 9 5900X vs 10900K Review and Benchmarks! - tech
(hx) 06:20 PM CET - Nov,06 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
The big AMD "Zen 3" architecture we've been hearing a lot about is finally here, and we have with us its most affordable part, the 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X. AMD claims that the 5600X is everything an AAA gamer would possibly want, and that the processor shouldn't get in the way of even premium 4K graphics cards.

AMD is debuting the Ryzen 5 5600X at a staggering $299, which is the highest launch price ever for a Ryzen 5-series processor, higher than what you'd pay for an 8-core 3700X. AMD states that the 5600X should have everything you need to build a gaming desktop for any resolution. Unlike the 5800X and 5900X which lack stock cooling solutions, AMD is including a cooler with the Ryzen 5. The chip has the same 95 W TDP as its predecessor, the 3600X, and is built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication node. The Ryzen 9 5900X is a 12-core/24-thread processor AMD is pricing at $549, about the same as the current Core i9-10900K street price (it originally launched at around $500). Ryzen 9 5900X's CPU cores are built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication process as the Ryzen 3000 "Zen 2" processor, but with several refinements to the microarchitecture. The biggest change with "Zen 3" has to be the company doing away with the 4-core CCX and unifying all cores of the CPU chiplet into a single 8-core CCX. Even within the CPU core, AMD has worked to reduce latencies, improved branch-prediction, optimized the execution engine, fattened the front-end and load/store units, and deployed faster caches, which has a direct impact on IPC, or single-thread performance. IPC is the single biggest contributor to gaming performance, and the 19% claimed IPC gain over "Zen 2" should mean AMD has taken the gaming crown since the "Zen 2" architecture wasn't too far behind "Comet Lake" at gaming to begin with.

Unlike the competition, AMD isn't launching a new chipset with Zen 3. Existing motherboards based on AMD 500-series or 400-series chipsets will work with the new Ryzen 5000 Series processors after a BIOS update.

NVIDIA Reportedly Working on GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - tech
(hx) 06:28 PM CET - Nov,04 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
A leak from renowned (and usually on-point) leaker Kopite7kimi claims that NVIDIA has finally settled on new graphics cards to combat AMD's RX 6800 threat after all. After the company has been reported (and never confirmed) to be working on double-memory configurations for their RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 graphics cards (with 16 GB GDDR6 and 20 GB GDDR6X, respectively), the company is now reported to have settled for a 20 GB RTX 3080 Ti to face a (apparently; pending independent reviews) resurgent AMD.

The RTX 3080 Ti specs paint a card with the same CUDA core count as the RTX 3090, with 10496 FP32 cores over the same 320-bit memory bus as the RTX 3080. Kopite includes board and SKU numbers (PG133 SKU 15) along a new GPU codename: GA102-250. The performance differentiator against the RTX 3090 stands to be the memory amount, bus, and eventually core clockspeed; memory speed and board TGP are reported to mirror those of the RTX 3080, so some reduced clocks compared to that graphics card are expected. That amount of CUDA cores means NVIDIA is essentially divvying-up the same GA-102 die between its RTX 3090 (good luck finding one in stock) and the reported RTX 3080 Ti (so good luck finding one of those in stock as well, should the time come). It is unclear how pricing would work out for this SKU, but pricing comparable to that of the RX 6900 XT is the more sensible speculation. Take this report with the usual amount of NaCl.

AMD announces Radeon RX 6800XT & RX 6900XT - tech
(hx) 12:25 AM CET - Oct,29 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
AMD started off October with a bang, announcing the new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs and now to close out the month, we’ve got official details on three new Radeon RDNA 2 GPUs – RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6800. All three GPUs are based on AMD’s new RDNA 2 architecture, delivering up to 65% more performance per watt compared to the original RDNA 1 architecture while using the same 7nm process. AMD has also been able to squeeze out an additional 30 percent in average clock speeds. Another interesting feature is Infinity Cache, which allows for more bandwidth while keeping power consumption down. This is a particularly big benefit for 4K gaming, where large amounts of data needs to move through the GPU memory. The AMD Radeon RX 6800XT features 72 compute units, 2015Mhz game clock, 2250Mhz boost clock, and 128MB Infinity Cache. It also comes with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and requires 300W total power. This GPU will be priced at $649, and will be available on November 18th. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 features 60 compute units, 1815Mhz game clock, 2105Mhz boost clock, and 128MB Infinity Cache. It also comes with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and requires 250W total power. This GPU will be priced at $579, and will be more powerful than the RTX2080Ti. AMD also revealed its highest RDNA 2 model, the AMD Radeon RX 6900XT. AMD Radeon RX 6900XT will be available on December 8th and will cost $999. This GPU will challenge the RTX3090, a GPU that costs way more than it. The AMD Radeon RX 6900XT features 80 compute units, 2015Mhz game clock, 2250Mhz boost clock, and 128MB Infinity Cache. It also comes with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and requires 300W total power.

This 8K Monitor Costs HOW MUCH?! - tech
(hx) 06:38 PM CET - Oct,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (9)
With anything tech related, manufacturers are always striving to give you the very best product and Dell thinks that the UP3218K ticks that box. With production focussed tasks bigger than ever and GPUs catered specifically for 8K gaming like the RTX 3090, you’re going to need a monitor to utilise it but is it worth that hefty price tag?

While it's cool 4k is barely starting to get a bit more adopted so I think 8k is still something to look forward to 5-6 years from now!

NVIDIA Reportedly Cancels Launch of RTX 3080 20GB, RTX 3070 16GB - tech
(hx) 04:18 PM CEST - Oct,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Fresh reports floating in the rumor mill's circulatory system claim that NVIDIA backtracked on its plans to launch higher VRAM capacity versions of their RTX 3080 and the (in the meantime, delayed) RTX 3070. These cards launched with 10 GB VRAM for the RTX 3080 and 8 GB VRAM for the RTX 3070, with reports circulating as early as their announcement that there would be double-capacity versions hitting the market just a few months later - specifically, in December of this year. Videocardz, however, claims that these long-rumored 20 GB and 16 GB SKUs have now been canceled by NVIDIA, who sent this news to its AIB partners - and the usage of canceled, not postponed, is perfunctory. For cards theoretically shipping come December, this is indeed a small advance notice, but it might be enough for AIB partners to feed all their GA102-200 (RTX 3080) and GA104-400 (RTX 3070) silicon towards the already - if not readily - available models. This report, Videocardz claims, has been confirmed by two of their sources, and comes at the exact same day specifications for AMD's RX 6000 series leaked. It's likely NVIDIA already had knowledge of its competition's designs and performance targets, however, so this could be seen as nothing more than a coincidence. One of the publications' sources claims GDDR6X yields might be the cause for the cancellation, but this doesn't help explain why the alleged RTX 3070 16 GB card (with its GDDR6 chips) was also canceled. Remember: these are rumors on cards that were never announced by NVIDIA themselves, so take these with the appropriate salt-mine level of skepticism.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Benchmarked - tech
(d@rkfu) 11:26 PM CEST - Oct,19 2020 - Post a comment
Since AMD announced its next-generation Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors based on Zen 3 core, everyone has been wondering how the new processors perform. For a detailed review and performance numbers, you should wait for official reviews. However, today we have the scores of Ryzen 5 5600X CPU. Thanks to the popular hardware leaker @TUM_APISAK, the Ryzen 5 5600X performance numbers in the SiSoftware Sandra benchmark suite have been leaked. When digging under the hood, the new Ryzen CPU contains six of Zen 3 cores with 12 threads, paired with as much as 32 MB of level three (L3) cache. These cores are running at 3.7 GHz base frequency, while the boost speeds are reaching 4.6 GHz.

In the test results, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU has scored Processor Arithmetic and Processor Multi-Media scores of 255.22 GOPS and 904.38 Mpix/s. These scores are not much on their own until we compare them to some of the Intel offerings. When compared to the Intel Core i5-10600K CPU, which is likely its targeted competing category, it scores 224.07 GOPS and 662.33 Mpix/s for Processor Arithmetic and Processor Multi-Media tests respectively. This puts the AMD CPU ahead 13.9% and 36.5% in these tests, indicating the possibility of Zen 3. Another important note here is the thermal headroom both of these CPUs run. While the Intel model is constrained withing 125 W TDP, the AMD model runs at just 65 W TDP. This could be an indication of the efficiency that these new processors harness.

Microsoft xCloud May Bypass Apple App Store with Web App - tech
(hx) 12:35 AM CEST - Oct,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft is reportedly planning to release a "direct browser-based solution" to bring their Xbox Game Pass xCloud streaming service to iOS and iPadOS devices targeting a 2021 launch according to sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft has faced numerous issues with bringing the service to Apple devices due to App Store policies requiring each game to be uploaded as a separate application for review. Microsoft has previously stated that this solution is unacceptable and they would be investigating other options, they seem to have concluded that a web app would be the best route forwards. This approach is very similar to Amazon's Luna game streaming service which will also utilize a web app for access on Apple devices.

Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees at an all-hands meeting on Wednesday the company is planning to bring Game Pass to Apple's iPhone and iPad, targeting 2021 for the potential release of a "direct browser-based solution," Business Insider has learned.

"We absolutely will end up on iOS," Spencer told employees, according to two people with direct knowledge of his comments. Microsoft did not comment at the time of publication. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Microsoft last month added a key new feature to Game Pass, its Netflix-style subscription service that gives Xbox and PC gamers access to a vast catalogue of games. Now, Game Pass subscribers can stream many of the included titles directly to their Android phones or tablets, no console required.

Notable by its absence at the feature's launch was support for Apple's iPhone and iPad. An Apple spokesperson told Business Insider this summer that doesn't allow for game streaming in apps like Game Pass or Google's Stadia because it is unable to review each game in the services' respective libraries.

AMD has officially unveiled its Ryzen 5000 processors in an online event that really went hard in highlighting the gaming capabilities of these new processors, with CEO Lisa Su stating that “gaming begins with AMD”. The first Ryzen 5000 CPU AMD showed off was the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, a high-end processor which will come with 12 cores, 24 threads and a 4.8GHz boost. It will have a 105W TDP. It will cost $549 when it launches November 5. Gamers can expect average performance improvement of 26% at 1080p, compared to the AMD Ryzen 3900XT, according to the company. Zen 3, if you're wondering, is the name of the architecture the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will be based on. AMD then also showed off the monster AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, a 16-core, 32 thread CPU with a 4.9GHz boost, 72 MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP, which will sell at a seriously competitive $799. We also found out about the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and the 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 5600X as well. Based on a 7nm+ manufacturing process, AMD Ryzen 5000 desktop processors could be tremendously powerful and potentially push clock speeds high enough to really make Intel hurt, especially if Team Blue stays stuck at 14nm on desktop. At the October 8 launch, CEO Lisa Su announced that the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will all launch on November 5, 2020. Thankfully, that's not too far away at all, and hopefully stock will be plentiful, so everyone who wants one, can buy one.

On paper, these AMD Ryzen 5000 specs look pretty darn excellent, combined with their affordable price tags. At the October 8 launch, AMD talked up the new CPUs performance, with the "AMD Ryzen 9 5900X [offering] up to a 26% generational uplift in gaming performance" compared to the last gen.

It also claims that the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X has "the highest single-thread performance of any desktop gaming processor" and the "most multi-core performance of any desktop gaming processor and any desktop processor in a mainstream CPU socket."

Meanwhile, the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, according to the company, is on average "7% faster in 1080p gaming across select game titles than the competition," which AMD claims is the Intel Core i9-10900K. This is a 10-core CPU which sold for $488 (about £400, AU$750), which is slightly cheaper than what AMD is asking for.

Windows 10 to support hardware-accelerated AV1 playback - tech
(hx) 10:42 AM CEST - Oct,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
This fall, Microsoft’s hardware partners are rolling out hardware accelerated AV1 video support on new Windows 10 systems with the latest GPUs. With video consuming an ever-increasing portion of the world's internet traffic, better compression technology helps to improve video image quality while also reducing bandwidth consumption. AV1, which is developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), can reach 50% better compression than H.264 and 20% better than VP9 for the same video content. Enabling hardware support for AV1 allows users to get the benefits of this improved video codec, and shifting decode work from software to hardware typically reduces power consumption and increases battery life on mobile devices.

Here are the components required to experience hardware accelerated AV1 video on Windows 10:

Once you have those pieces in place, you will see the benefits of hardware accelerated AV1 video as streaming services roll out more video content encoded with AV1.

If you want to look under the hood to see when you are receiving AV1, some streaming services have ways to show this information. For example, on YouTube you can right-click on the video and select “Stats for nerds”. When the video is AV1 encoded, you will see “av01…” in the “Codecs” line on the stats overlay.

When NVIDIA introduced its Ampere consumer graphics cards, they launched three models - the GeForce RTX 3070, RTX 3080, and RTX 3090 GPUs. Both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 have seen the light of the day as they are now available for purchase, however, one card has remained. The GeForce RTX 3070 launch was originally planned for October 15th launch, but it has officially been postponed by NVIDIA. According to the company, the reason behind this sort of delay in the launch is the high demand expected. Production of the cards is ramping up quickly and the company is quickly stocking up the cards. Likely, NVIDIA AIBs are taking their time to stock up on cards, as the mid-range is usually in very high demand.

As a reminder, the GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card features 5888 CUDA cores running at a base frequency of 1.5 GHz and boost frequency of 1.73 GHz. Unlike the higher-end Ampere cards, the RTX 3070 uses older GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus with a bandwidth of 448 GB/s. The GPU features a TDP of 220 W and will be offered in a range of variants by AIBs. You will be able to purchase the GPU on October 29th for the price of $499.
