Intel discontinues its 300-series chipset - tech
(hx) 07:51 AM CET - Jan,06 2021 - Post a comment
Intel has announced that the 300 chipset series will no longer be shipped starting from January 28 next year. The products based on 300 series, including Z390, Z370, H370, B360, H310, B365, H310D, and mobile QMS380 motherboards have officially entered the discontinuation period starting from yesterday. Intel has already discontinued the 9th Gen Core series a month ago, which were based on the LGA1151 socket. The discontinuation of the 300 series motherboards effectively means that no more CPUs based on this socket will appear in the future. The manufacturer is set to announce its 500 series motherboards next week at CES 2021. The new motherboards will support the 10th Gen Core Comet Lake-S series as well as the 11th Gen Core Rocket Lake-S chips, although only the latter will benefit from the PCIe Gen4 interface standard.

INTEL Graphics Driver 27.20.100.9126 - tech
(hx) 11:41 PM CET - Jan,05 2021 - Post a comment
A new graphics driver has been published by Intel for its GPUs (Intel 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Gen processors) on Windows 10. This new driver (version 27.20.100.912) is a patch driver that brings the following bugfixes:

KEY ISSUES FIXED:

– Lower than average score observed in SPECViewperf 13 benchmark on 11th Generation Intel Core Processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics.
– YouCam Camera Preview & Video Playback may be black on 10th Generation Intel Core processors and higher.
– Sporadically error code may be observed when playing Netflix content on edge browser and hot plugging or unplugging external display on 11th Generation Intel Core Processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics.
– Flash may be observed on 3D Monitor when ‘3D display mode’ is enabled on 11th Generation Intel Core Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
Intel Core i7-11700K tops PassMark's Single Thread Rating - tech
(d@rkfu) 12:25 AM CET - Jan,05 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
The 11th Gen Core series may not be here yet, but the samples of new Intels processors certainly are. It appears that after visiting Geekbench, the upcoming 8-core and 16-thread processor based on Cypress Cove architecture has made its way to PassMark ranking. The CPU is listed with a 3.6 GHz base clock and a 5.0 GHz turbo clock, which are identical specifications to what the Geekbench leak had already confirmed. The CPU scored 27,108 points in the CPU Mark test with 3,548 points in the single-thread rating alone. The CPU may not be as strong in the multi-threaded test as Intel’s i9-10900K featuring 10 cores, and Ryzen 9 5950X featuring 16 cores, but the sample still managed to score really high single-thread result. Unfortunately, PassMark website does list detailed benchmark results of each run, thus we are not sure what was testing platform was used for this test (motherboard, DDR4 memory specs etc.)

Intel is expected to unveil its 11th Gen Core series at CES 2021, but the availability is not planned till March. Intel Rocket Lake-S CPUs are still based on 14nm process technology, but they rely on new core architecture known as Cypress Cove. The CPUs also support PCI Gen4 and feature Gen12 Xe onboard graphics. The main concern for the new series is the lack of 8+ core SKUs, despite the current (Comet Lake-S) series already offering such a configuration.

ASUS confirms GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - tech
(hx) 05:40 PM CET - Dec,29 2020 - Post a comment
The manufacturer becomes the first to confirm that such NVIDIA SKU even exists. The listing reveals that two ROG STRIX graphics cards are in development: ROG-STRIX-RTX3080TI-O20G-GAMING (with factory-overclocking) and ROG-STRIX-RTX3080TI-20G-GAMING (likely to feature reference clock speeds). According to ASUS, the RTX 3080 Ti SKU would feature 20GB of memory, which would confirm the previous rumors about the graphics card’s specifications. The graphics card is expected to feature GA102 GPU with 10496 CUDA cores, the same number as the flagship RTX 3090. It would appear that RTX 3080 Ti will simply offer less memory (20GB vs 24GB) and carry a lower TDP, to better combat Radeon RX 6900 XT series.
NVIDIA was initially planning to launch the RTX 3080 Ti in January, although new information seems to confirm that the SKU has been pushed back till after the Chinese New Year in February. It is unclear why the 3080 Ti listing appears on the ASUS website right now. The listing also confirms that ASUS will launch RTX 3060 with 12GB memory. The company is expected to launch two ROG STRIX SKUs as well. The RTX 3060 12GB is the only SKU that was still planned for late January launch.

Epic Games Launcher Caught Spiking Ryzen - tech
(d@rkfu) 08:15 PM CET - Dec,26 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Though Epic Games is giving away games for Christmas, not everything that seems free truly is. Either by lousy design, stealthy data collection, or a combination of the two, the Epic Games Launcher appears to be continuously running some sort of relatively demanding process in the background. This issue is so pronounced that a Reddit user by the name Neoncarbon noticed that his AMD Ryzen 7 5800X idle temps dropped from 50C to 37C when he closed down the app. We actually proved this out for ourselves as well, as you'll see in the screen shots below. What's odd is that other game store apps, like GOG and Steam, do not show this behavior at all. What exactly could Epic Games Launcher be doing in the background that is elevating CPU temps even while idle, when other launchers do not have this issue?

With over 10.7k upvotes and +1200 comments, Neoncarbon’s Reddit post has evolved into people sharing similar experiences after shutting down the Epic Games Launcher. It appears that anyone that has the Epic Games launcher running in the background has higher CPU temps and usage, even while idle on the desktop. However, it seems especially pronounced on Ryzen CPUs such as Neoncarbon’s Ryzen 7 5800X. Currently there is no fix for this issue, but there is one workaround. You can try to link Epic Games Launcher to the GOG Galaxy client, which has a built-in feature to automatically close 'original' launchers after the game is shut down, as pointed out by Videocardz. It has also been reported that the Epic Games Launcher/EGL is sending 14x more as much data as Steam and NVIDIA Geforce Experience, while working in the background during the same timeframe. It has been discovered that the “EpicWebHelper” seems to send some data to the following URL/server, though it remains to be seen whether this data collection behavior is indeed the cause of the high CPU usage/temp issue which is being reported: “tracking-website-prod07-epic-961842049.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com”

Fake mobile app of Cyberpunk 2077 game is being distributed as a ransomware - tech
(hx) 07:59 PM CET - Dec,25 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Earlier this week, one Kaspersky Android malware analyst Tatyana Shishkova discovered an Android ransomware masquerading as a mobile version of the Cyberpunk 2077 game. A fake website which was actually disguised to look like Google’s Play Store was offering a mobile version of CDPR’s latest title, but it turns out that the said version actually installed a ransomware on the victim’s Mobile device, thus infecting it in the whole process.
This new ransomware has been dubbed as Coderware, and once it infects any mobile device, the contents are then fully encrypted. However, this ransomware uses a “hardcoded key”, which means that a decryptor can be used to recover files without having to pay any demanded ransom fee by the cybercriminals. According to the ransomware instructions, the affected victims have only 10 hours to send $500 worth of bitcoins to the attackers, or else their encrypted file will be permanently deleted. The hardcoded key is ‘21983453453435435738912738921’.

As pointed out by Tatyana Shishkova, this ransomware attack uses the same variant as the BlackKingdom ransomware that was released in early 2020. This ransomware is the same as one discovered by the MalwareHunterTeam in November that was disguised as a Windows Cyberpunk 2077 installer. The Windows variant was actually a python compiled exe that would encrypt the victim’s files and then append the .DEMON extension to encrypted file’s names. Though, it is not known if the Windows version also uses a hardcoded key at this time.

Thank you to everyone who has continuously supported this web site. I would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas. I hope that crypto-holo-virtual-or-real Santa brings you everything you've asked but above all else, good health, good wealth - and plenty of gaming computers, consoles and games! Whatever you plan to do, be healhy (COVID sucks) be safe, be happy, and be good!! :) I'm probably just going to eat potato salad and fried turkey, drink beer! Regular TV is quite dead but we have computers, Netflix, Hulu and things like that. I mean lots of fun. You probably won't believe me, but I'm going to play old good Titan Quest with my wife and both little girls tonight! It will be something else for them since they still play Roblox, Brawlstars, Minecraft and weird games like that :-) FYI, I don't play Cyberpunk yet...maybe I will buy it later for less $. What about you guys?

Despite the handicap, the Core i7-11700KF still managed to pull ahead. While we know that the Core i9-10900K boosts up to 5.3 GHz, it remains a fact that the boost clock speed for the Core i7-11700KF is unknown.
  • Microsoft Is Reportedly Developing Custom Arm Chips - According to reports from Bloomberg, Microsoft has been working on its own brand of SoC for servers that it provides as part of its cloud services, including Azure. Arm SoCs with a lot of cores and plenty of PCI Express connectivity can service many concurrent clients at once. Microsoft has begun recruiting chip designers over the last year, reportedly poaching talent from Intel and Qualcomm, among others. Building its own processors allows Microsoft to commit on-chip resources to what's important and cut features that it doesn't need while also gaining some independence from Intel's pricey Xeon server CPUs. While the reports focus on server SoCs, at least one source has said that a follow-up Surface SoC may also be in the works. That would surprise exactly nobody, since Microsoft has already had a hand in Arm PC design. The company partnered with Qualcomm to produce the SQ1 in the Surface Pro X late last year. Back in October, the SQ2 version of the Surface Pro X debuted. Unlike the second-generation Snapdragon 8cx that it's based on, the SQ2 stuck with 4G LTE modems for now, but we expect yet another follow-up with 5G modems will come eventually. So far, Microsoft and Arm have both declined to comment on the rumors directly. However, Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw didn't exactly rule out the company's rumored server CPU plans, either. In a statement to Bloomberg,
  • Testing The World’s Best APUs: Desktop AMD Ryzen 4750G, 4650G and 4350G - Can an integrated option have enough thermal headroom and graphics power to worthwhile for gaming? This is the pitch of AMD’s Ryzen 4000 based APUs, which combine Zen 2 CPU cores with fast Vega 8 graphics. With a 65W headroom, it should surpass anything that mobile processors have to offer, but is it enough to replace the low-end discrete graphics market?
  • AMD's Graphics Driver will Eat One CPU Core when No Radeon Installed - Looks like AMD is doing things differently and just pre-loads Radeon Settings in the background every time your system is booted and a user logs in, no matter if AMD graphics hardware is installed or not. It would be trivial to add a check "If no AMD hardware found, then exit immediately", but ok. Also, do we really need six entries in Task Scheduler? I got curious and wondered how it is possible in the first place that an utility software like the Radeon Settings control panel uses 100% CPU load constantly—something that might happen when a mining virus gets installed, to use your electricity to mine cryptocurrency, without you knowing. By the way, all this was verified to be happening on Radeon 20.11.2 WHQL driver, 20.11.3 Beta and the press driver for an upcoming Radeon review. If you are affected by this issue, just uninstall the AMD driver from Windows Settings - Apps and Features. If that doesn't work, use DDU. It's not a big deal anyway, what's most important is that you are aware, in case your system feels sluggish after a graphics hardware change.
  • Intel graphics driver version 27.20.100.9079 fixes crashes in Assassin's Creed Valhalla - Intel has released a new update for its DCH graphics driver, specifically targeting the integrated GPUs in its processors (not the Irix Xe Max graphics card). The new update brings the driver version to 27.20.100.9079, and it's mostly focused on bug fixes, so it doesn't add support for any new games. The highlight of the release is that it fixes crashes and hangs that could happen in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as well as Tom Clancy's The Division 2 when running in DirectX 12 mode
  • Prices of NAND Flash Controller ICs Poised to Rise by 15-20% due to Tightening Production Capacity for Foundry Services, Says TrendForce - In the upstream semiconductor industry, the major foundries such as TSMC and UMC are reporting fully loaded capacities, while in the downstream, the available production capacity for OSAT is also lacking, according to TrendForce's latest investigations. Given this situation, suppliers of NAND Flash controller ICs such as Phison and Silicon Motion are now unable to meet upside demand from their clients. Not only have many controller IC suppliers temporarily stopped offering quotes for new orders, but they are also even considering raising prices soon because the negotiations between NAND Flash suppliers and module houses over 1Q21 contracts are now at the critical juncture. The potential increases in prices of controller ICs from outsourced suppliers (IC design houses) are currently estimated to be the range of 15-20%.

  • Microsoft fixes Windows 10 chkdsk issue - Microsoft released the usual set of Patch Tuesday updates to supported Windows versions earlier this month. While the updates brought the usual bug fixes, improvements, and security patches, there were also known issues documented in the KB articles. However, one of the issues that wasn't documented, which users began reporting, was that of a problem with the chkdsk error-checking utility. The bug - supposedly introduced with KB4592438 - affects Windows 10 versions 2004 and 20H2, and causes the chkdsk /f command to affect file systems adversely, resulting in blue screens (BSOD) and corruption of the file system in the worst case. The issue seemingly affects SSDs and can be reproduced even when run on a virtual machine (VM). Microsoft has now acknowledged the issue, documented a workaround, and has begun rolling out a fix.
  • Zero-click iMessage zero-day used to hack the iPhones - Three dozen journalists had their iPhones hacked in July and August using what at the time was an iMessage zero-day exploit that didn't require the victims to take any action to be infected, researchers said. The exploit and the payload it installed were developed and sold by NSO Group, according to a report published Sunday by Citizen Lab, a group at the University of Toronto that researches and exposes hacks on dissidents and journalists. NSO is a maker of offensive hacking tools that has come under fire over the past few years for selling its products to groups and governments with poor human rights records. NSO has disputed some of the conclusions in the Citizen Lab report. The attacks infected the targets' phones with Pegasus, an NSO-made implant for both iOS and Android that has a full range of capabilities, including recording both ambient audio and phone conversations, taking pictures, and accessing passwords and stored credentials. The hacks exploited a critical vulnerability in the iMessage app that Apple researchers weren't aware of at the time. Apple has since fixed the bug with the rollout of iOS 14.
  • US regulator charges Ripple over its XRP asset  - Blockchain company Ripple has been running a $1.3 billion unregistered offering, akin to an unlicensed stock sale, according to a complaint filed Tuesday by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The suit revolves around XRP, launched in 2013, which Ripple calls a cryptocurrency. The SEC says XRP is an "unregistered securities offering to investors in the US and worldwide." "Issuers seeking the benefits of a public offering, including access to retail investors, broad distribution and a secondary trading market, must comply with the federal securities laws that require registration of offerings unless an exemption from registration applies," said Stephanie Avakian, SEC Enforcement Division director, in a statement. Tuesday's suit amounts to one of the most significant federal actions taken to shift unlicensed cryptocurrencies under the umbrella of more traditional registered securities. As the crypto industry has exploded in the last decade, the SEC and other agencies have struggled to classify and regulate them. In a separate action, the US Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network last week proposed new disclosure rules to better keep tabs on crypto wallets.

Cyberpunk 2077 Does Not Leverage SMT on AMD Ryzen - tech
(d@rkfu) 11:05 AM CET - Dec,14 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
Cyberpunk 2077 does not leverage simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) on AMD Ryzen processors, according to multiple technical reviews of the game that tested it with various processors. The game does leverage the analogous HyperThreading feature on rival Intel Core processors. While this doesn't adversely affect performance of higher core-count Ryzen chips, such as the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X or to a lesser extent the 12-core 5900X, lower core-count variants such as the 6-core 5600X take a definite performance hit, with PCGH reporting that a Ryzen 5 5600X is now matched by a Core i5-10400F, as the game is able to take advantage of HyperThreading and deal with 12 logical processors on the Intel chip, while ignoring SMT on the AMD one. CD Projekt RED may have bigger problems on its hands than performance optimization for a PC processor, such as the game being riddled with glaring performance issues on consoles; but in the meantime, the PC enthusiast community swung to action with a fix. Authored by chaosxk on Reddit, it involves manually editing the executable binaries of the game using a Hex Editor, which tricks the game into using logical processors as cores. This fix has been found to improve frame-rates on AMD Ryzen machines. Before attempting the hex edit, make sure you back up your original executables. The screenshot below provides a before & after-patch view of Cyberpunk 2077 loading a Ryzen 9 5950X. You can learn more about this fix, and a step-by-step guide here.

Another Reddit post by CookiePLMonster sheds light on what is possibly happening with the game. According to them, Cyberpunk 2077 reuses AMD GPUOpen pseudo-code to optimize its scheduler for the processor. It was originally designed to let an application use more threads when an AMD "Bulldozer" processor is used; but has the opposite effect when a non-Bulldozer AMD processor is detected. The game looks for "AuthenticAMD" processor brand, and "family = 0x15" (AMD K15 or Bulldozer/derivative), and only then engages "logical processors" (as identified by Windows OS scheduler as part of its Bulldozer-optimization). When any other, including a newer AMD processor is detected, the code makes the game scheduler only send traffic to the physical cores, and not to their logical processors. The game indeed uses this archaic GPUOpen code from 2017 to identify AMD processors, and this is responsible for its sub-optimal performance with AMD Ryzen processors. This clearly looks like a bug or oversight, not like it's intentional.

Intel graphics driver version 27.20.100.9030 improves Fortnite - tech
(hx) 04:34 PM CET - Dec,11 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Just like AMD and Nvidia did earlier this week, Intel has released a new version of its graphics driver for Windows 10 PCs, bringing it to version 27.20.100.9030. This update is only for Intel processors with integrated graphics, and the Intel Iris Xe Max GPU has its own set of drivers that's also likely to be updated soon.
This update brings with it a handful of improvements for gaming, starting with playability improvements for the ever-popular Fortnite on 7th generation Intel Core processors. Support for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Age - Definitive Edition, Twin Mirror, and Football Manager 2021 has been added for those using Iris Xe graphics, the integrated GPU in 11th generation Intel Core processors. Finally, Empire of Sin, Halo 4, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, and Haven are now supported on processors with Iris Plus graphics or better. While AMD and Nvidia's updates earlier this week added support for Cyberpunk 2077, which also released this week, you won't be playing that game on integrated graphics. Aside from the new improvements, the driver includes a handful of bug fixes, including some game-specific crashes in games like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
  • Intermittent crash or hang seen in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege* (DX11) on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • Intermittent crash or hang seen when running Shadow of the Tomb Raider* (DX12) benchmark on 10th Generation Intel® Core™ processors with Intel Iris Plus graphics.
  • Minor graphic anomalies seen in Hitman 2* (DX12), Rise of the Tomb Raider* (DX12), Forza Motorsport 6* (DX12), Battlefield V* (DX12) on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2* (Vulkan) Application window automatically flickering and resizing during launch on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • Video corruption observed on PowerDVD20 when mouse is hovered over the progress bar during local video playback on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • Garbage seen when play video with PowerDVD18 on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® X e graphics.
  • External display not enumerating after Hot-plug/unplug with mDP -DP cable on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • Corruptions seen with excel and power point in different scenarios on 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.

1 Hour Power Outage at Micron Plant Could Mean Increased DRAM Prices - tech
(hx) 07:35 PM CET - Dec,04 2020 - Post a comment / read (7)
Semiconductor manufacturing is a risky business. Not only is it heavily capital-intensive, which means that even some state-backed would-be players can fail in pooling together the required resources for an industry break-in; but the entire nature of the manufacturing process is a delicate balance of materials, nearly-endless fabrication, cleanup, and QA testing. Wafer manufacturing can take months between the initial fabrication stages through to the final packaging process; and this means that power outages or material contamination can jeopardize an outrageous number of in-fabrication semiconductors. Recent news as covered by DigiTimes place one of Micron's fabrication plants in Taiwan as being hit with a 1-hour long power outage, which can potentially affect 10% of the entire predictable DRAM supply for the coming months (a power outage affects every step of the manufacturing process). Considering the increased demand for DRAM components due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated demand for DRAM-inside products such as PCs, DIY DRAM, laptops, and tablets, industry players are now expecting a price hike for DRAM throughout 2021 until this sudden supply constraint is dealt with. As we know, DRAM manufacturers and resellers are a fickle bunch when it comes to increasing prices in even the slightest, dream-like hint of reduced supply. It remains to be seen how much of this 10% DRAM supply is actually salvageable, but projecting from past experience, a price hike seems to be all but guaranteed.

NVIDIA: RTX 30-series Shortages Partly Caused by Insufficient Wafer - tech
(hx) 11:24 PM CET - Dec,03 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
The current widespread shortages on anything gaming-related (be it gaming consoles or the latest GPUs from both NVIDIA and AMD) are a well-known quantity by now. However, it now seems that NVIDIA's shortages aren't just the result of "outstanding, unprecedented demand", aided by scalping practices, but also from wafer and component shortages. NVIDIA's CFO Colette Kress at Credit Suisse 24th Annual Technology Conference expanded on these issues, saying that "We do have supply constraints and our supply constraints do expand past what we are seeing in terms of wafers and silicon, but yes some constraints are in substrates and components. We continue to work during the quarter on our supply and we believe though that demand will probably exceed supply in Q4 for overall gaming." There was no further information on exactly which components are experiencing shortages. An educated guess might pin some of these issues on the exotic GDDR6X memory subsystem on high-tier Ampere graphics cards, but there could be other factors at play here. If NVIDIA did underestimate demand for its Ampere graphics cards, though, that will make it that much harder for the company to ramp up orders (and hence production) with Samsung - semiconductor manufacturing works with several months of lead time between orders and their actual fulfillment. Kress further expanded on NVIDIA's optimism towards solving these supply issues, saying that "We do expect it probably to take a couple months for it to catch up to demand, but at this time, it is really difficult for us to quantify. So, we stay focused on trying to get our parts to the market for this very important holiday season. Each day things continue to improve. But before the end of the quarter, we will be able to provide some more information."

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.11.3 drivers - tech
(hx) 12:21 PM CET - Dec,01 2020 - Post a comment
AMD late Monday released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition. Version 20.11.3 beta adds support for Vulkan Ray Tracing Extensions. Additionally, the drivers add optimization for Immortals: Fenyx Rising. The drivers also address a fairly long list of issues. For starters, it addresses lower performance observed for the RX 6800 series GPUs on Watch Dogs Legion and DiRT 5; and low performance noticed for the RX 5000 and older GPUs on Godfall. Some character models facing display corruption in Crysis Remastered on RX 6800 series has been fixed. Intermittent game crashes with Troy: A Total War Saga, and WoW Shadowlands have been fixed. A bug that caused WoW Shadowlands to fail to launch on Windows 7 machines with DirectX 12 renderer selected, has been fixed. Some intermittent game crashes seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with DXR enabled on RX 6800 series, have been fixed. Doom Eternal with HDR enabled disabling HDR on Windows 10, has been fixed. Certain issues found with Adobe Illustrator and AIDA 64 have been fixed. Some display corruption issues with RDR2 using RX 6800 series at 1080p, has been fixed.
Support For
  • Immortals: Fenyx Rising
  • Vulkan raytracing Extensions
Added Vulkan Support
  • VK_KHR_fragment_shading_rate: This extension provides the ability to change the shading rate per fragment. This extension allows for multiple pixels to be shaded via a single fragment shader invocation as opposed to the normal rate of one invocation per pixel.
  • VK_KHR_acceleration_structure: This extension provides acceleration structures for representing geometry that is spatially sorted. Acceleration structures are the most common way for quickly identifying potential ray intersections by raytracing techniques.
  • VK_KHR_ray_tracing_pipeline: This extension introduces raytracing pipelines along with new shader domains and an indirection table to link shader groups with acceleration structures.
  • VK_KHR_ray_query: This extension introduces ray queries, which can be used by any shader type outside of the optional dedicated ray tracing pipeline to return traversal results to the calling shader.
  • VK_KHR_deferred_host_operations: This extension defines the infrastructure and usage patterns for deferrable commands, which allows dependent extensions to defer their own operations. The VK_KHR_deferred_host_operations extension itself does not specify any commands as deferrable.
  • VK_KHR_pipeline_library: This extension introduces pipeline libraries. A pipeline library is a new special pipeline type that defines a set of pipeline states. It cannot be bound, rather it can be linked into other pipelines.
  • VK_KHR_shader_terminate_invocation: This extension indicates support for the SPV_KHR_terminate_invocation SPIR-V extension. The SPIR-V extension introduces a new instruction OpTerminateInvocation that allows a shader invocation to immediately terminate, which provides the behavior required by the GLSL discard statement.
Fixed Issues
  • Lower than expected performance may be experienced on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products in Watchdogs: Legion and Dirt 5.
  • Lower than expected performance may be experienced on Radeon RX 5000/500/400 series graphics products in Godfall.

Microsoft could be developing a way to run Android apps authentically on Windows - tech
(hx) 09:31 AM CET - Nov,29 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft's ambitious project is codenamed Latte, according to Windows Central. The report adds that Microsoft is planning to announce Latte next year, aiming to release it as part of the Windows 10 Fall 2021 update.

Project Latte aims to deliver a similar product, and is likely powered by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL.) Microsoft will need to provide its own Android subsystem for Android apps to actually run, however. Microsoft has announced that WSL will soon get support for GUI Linux applications, as well as GPU acceleration which should aid the performance of apps running through WSL. It's unlikely that Project Latte will include support for Play Services, as Google doesn't allow Play Services to be installed on anything other than native Android devices and Chrome OS. This means that apps which require Play Services APIs will need to be updated to remove those dependencies before they can be submitted on Windows 10.

Today, users can run Android apps on their PCs via app streaming using the Your Phone app built into Windows 10, but this functionality has been limited to a handful of Samsung devices and isn't always reliable. Being able to install and run Android apps locally on your PC will provide a much better experience and won't depend on what phone you have. Project Latte will allow app developers to bring over apps that don't already have a Windows version available. I'll be interested to see what kind of apps show up if Project Latte ever ships, as many Android apps are primarily designed for phones and are less desirable on anything larger than a phone-sized screen. Microsoft has made it clear in the last couple of years that it no longer considers native Windows apps as the be-all end-all when it comes to app development on the platform. Microsoft now welcomes many app platforms, including PWA, UWP, Win32, Linux (via WSL) and soon, Android apps.

TSMC Completes Its Latest 3nm Factory - tech
(hx) 05:58 PM CET - Nov,27 2020 - Post a comment
They say that it is hard to keep up with Moore's Law, however, for the folks over at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), that doesn't seem to represent any kind of a problem. Today, to confirm that TSMC is one of the last warriors for the life of Moore's Law, we have information that the company has completed building its manufacturing facility for the next-generation 3 nm semiconductor node. Located in Southern Taiwan Science Park near Tainan, TSMC is expecting to start high-volume manufacturing of the 3 nm node in that Fab in the second half of 2022. As always, one of the first customers expected is Apple. Estimated to cost an amazing 19.5 billion US Dollars, the Fab is expected to have an output of 55,000 300 mm (12-inch) wafers per month. Given that the regular facilities of TSMC exceed the capacity of over 100K wafers per month, this new facility is expected to increase the capacity over time and possibly reach the 100K level. The new 3 nm node is going to use the FinFET technology and will deliver a 15% performance gain over the previous 5 nm node, with 30% decreased power use and up to 70% density increase. Of course, all of those factors will depend on a specific design.

Google extends Chrome support for Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 09:14 PM CET - Nov,23 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Good news for everyone who still prefers Windows 7 over newer versions of the operating system. Google has extended Chrome support for the venerable OS by another six months, giving businesses whose plans to migrate to Windows 10 were put on hold because of the pandemic more breathing space. Despite Windows 7 reaching its end of extended support period for non-paying users in January, it's still found on around a fifth of all Windows machines. Part of the reason for the slow decline is the pandemic; with businesses' IT departments having to deal with the shift to remote work, new security protocols, and other related projects, moving onto Windows 10 became less of a priority.

Before the pandemic, Google said that it would continue to update Chrome on Windows 7 for 18 months after the latter's end of extended support date, which would have taken us to July 2021. Now, security updates have been extended to at least January 2022.

Apple's M1-Based MacBook Air Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Nov,12 2020 - Post a comment
When Apple announced that they are going to switch their Mac lineup from Intel-based x86 processors to the custom "Apple Silicon," everyone was wondering how the new processors will look and perform. To everyone's luck, Apple has just a few days ago announced its first Apple Silicon custom processor for MacBook. The M1, as the company calls it, is their first processor designed for higher-power and performance tasks The M1 features eight CPU cores (four high-performance and four-high efficiency) paired with eight cores dedicated to the graphics. On the die, there is also a 16-core neural engine made to accelerate machine learning tasks found in the new applications.

Today, we are getting the first GeekBench 5 CPU benchmarks that showcase just how far Apple has come with its custom design. What we have is the M1 processor found in MacBook Air. This Mac model features a passive cooling system, cooling a CPU with a base frequency of 3.2 GHz. The system scored 1719 points in the single-core result, and 6967 points in the multi-core result. The single-threaded results measure itself with some of the highest-end offerings from Intel and AMD, while the multi-threaded results are very good given the mix and match of small and big cores.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Landing in January at $999 - tech
(hx) 06:22 PM CET - Nov,11 2020 - Post a comment
According to the unknown manufacturer (AIB) based in Taiwan, NVIDIA is preparing to launch the new GeForce RTX 3000 series "Ampere" graphics card. As reported by the HKEPC website, the Santa Clara-based company is preparing to fill the gap between its top-end GeForce RTX 3090 and a bit slower RTX 3080 graphics card. The new product will be called GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. If you are wondering what the specification of the new graphics card will look like, you are in luck because the source has a few pieces of information. The new product will be based on GA102-250-KD-A1 GPU core, with a PG133-SKU15 PCB design scheme. The GPU will contain the same 10496 CUDA core configuration as the RTX 3090.

The only difference to the RTX 3090 will be a reduced GDDR6X amount of 20 GB. Along with the 20 GB of GDDR6X memory, the RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards will feature a 320-bit bus. The TGP of the card is limited to 320 Watts. The sources are reporting that the card will be launched sometime in January of 2021, and it will come at $999. This puts the price category of the RTX 3080 Ti in the same range as AMD's recently launched Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card, so it will be interesting to see how these two products are competing.

AMD Hurts Intel BAD - Ryzen 9 5900X vs 10900K Review and Benchmarks! - tech
(hx) 06:20 PM CET - Nov,06 2020 - Post a comment / read (4)
The big AMD "Zen 3" architecture we've been hearing a lot about is finally here, and we have with us its most affordable part, the 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X. AMD claims that the 5600X is everything an AAA gamer would possibly want, and that the processor shouldn't get in the way of even premium 4K graphics cards.

AMD is debuting the Ryzen 5 5600X at a staggering $299, which is the highest launch price ever for a Ryzen 5-series processor, higher than what you'd pay for an 8-core 3700X. AMD states that the 5600X should have everything you need to build a gaming desktop for any resolution. Unlike the 5800X and 5900X which lack stock cooling solutions, AMD is including a cooler with the Ryzen 5. The chip has the same 95 W TDP as its predecessor, the 3600X, and is built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication node. The Ryzen 9 5900X is a 12-core/24-thread processor AMD is pricing at $549, about the same as the current Core i9-10900K street price (it originally launched at around $500). Ryzen 9 5900X's CPU cores are built on the same 7 nm silicon fabrication process as the Ryzen 3000 "Zen 2" processor, but with several refinements to the microarchitecture. The biggest change with "Zen 3" has to be the company doing away with the 4-core CCX and unifying all cores of the CPU chiplet into a single 8-core CCX. Even within the CPU core, AMD has worked to reduce latencies, improved branch-prediction, optimized the execution engine, fattened the front-end and load/store units, and deployed faster caches, which has a direct impact on IPC, or single-thread performance. IPC is the single biggest contributor to gaming performance, and the 19% claimed IPC gain over "Zen 2" should mean AMD has taken the gaming crown since the "Zen 2" architecture wasn't too far behind "Comet Lake" at gaming to begin with.

Unlike the competition, AMD isn't launching a new chipset with Zen 3. Existing motherboards based on AMD 500-series or 400-series chipsets will work with the new Ryzen 5000 Series processors after a BIOS update.
