DRAM Prices Predicted to Increase by 20% in Q2 2021 - tech
(d@rkfu) 05:22 PM CET - Mar,20 2021 - Post a comment
While consumers are currently more than a little displeased (and rightly so) with the increase in cost of both graphics cards and processors, thankfully, for the last 2-3 years, DRAM has (generally speaking) been on something of a significant downwards trend. Put simply, memory today costs about half as much as what the equivalent would've done back in around 2016/2017. Following a report via DRAMExchange, however, a leading market intelligence group has predicted that the cost of DRAM is shortly set to spike quite notably! Following a statement from TrendForce, they have cited that due to the continued COVID-19 situation, as well as increased supply requests made on semiconductor foundries (seemingly having multiple-month long orders on queue), it would appear that after years of being produced in something of a significant surplus, DRAM might be (relatively speaking) running out. As such, and as often is the way in supply and demand economics, the less of something there is, the more expensive it will get! Although RAM prices have (apparently) already increased throughout Q1 at a rate of about 5-8%, it is now being suggested that a further spike of around 20% can be expected by consumers and will likely persist throughout at least Q2-Q3 2021. So, the short version is, if you are planning on building a new PC or upgrading your memory, do it now, because if this is proven true, the good times regarding DRAM may finally be coming to an end.

What do you think? How much memory do you currently have in your system?
Xe-HPG Gaming GPU Teaser Video - tech
(hx) 10:06 AM CET - Mar,20 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Before the end of this year, Intel is expected to formally make its debut in the world of gaming graphics cards with the launch of the Xe HPG. Now, admittedly, there’s still absolutely nothing written in stone suggesting that this will definitely happen before 2022, but given the potential on offer, specifically in providing both AMD and Nvidia with some much-needed competition, it’s certainly exciting for us humble consumers. Well, just in case you needed some proof that this is definitely on the way and not just smoke and mirrors, Intel has just released a brand new teaser video! Even with the Xe HPG rumored to appear (in some form) before the end of this year, there is still much about it we don’t know. In fact, all we really know is that it is set to be a gaming-orientated dedicated graphics card. So, with the video below, don’t expect to see or find any huge revelations within it. It would, at least on the surface, merely appear to be a reminder that this is definitely happening!

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060's unhackable mining limiter has been hacked - tech
(hx) 10:37 AM CET - Mar,16 2021 - Post a comment / read (5)
NVIDIA announced that their new mid-range RTX 3060 graphics card will have a built-in anti cryptocurrency mining firmware that will automatically reduce the mining hash rate by 50%. NVIDIA confirmed that this technology does not only work on the software level, but also on the hardware level. Bryan Del Rizzo claimed that there is a secure handshake between the driver and the BIOS that ‘prevents removal of the hash rate limiter’. This today has been confirmed as untrue. Following PC Watch reports, HardwareLuxx and ComputerBase now both confirm that by using the GeForce 470.05 driver, the Ethereum hash rate limiter is not working. It was earlier claimed that by using a special BIOS and driver the limiter can easily be removed. As it turns out, the hash rate can already be removed simply by replacing the driver alone, without the necessity to flash a new firmware. The driver is available through a BETA program and it is not available publically.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Memory-Modded with 16GB - tech
(hx) 11:57 PM CET - Mar,08 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
PC enthusiast and overclocker VIK-on pulled off a daring memory chip mod on his Palit GeForce RTX 3070 GamingPro OC graphics card, swapping its 8 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory with 16 GB of it, using eight replacement 16 Gbit chips. The modded card is able to recognize the 16 GB of memory, is able to utilize it like other 16 GB graphics cards (such as the Radeon RX 6800), and is fairly stable with benchmarks and stress tests, although not initially stable. It did spring up some black-screens. VIK-on later discovered that locking the clock-speeds using EVGA Precision-X stabilizes the card, so it performs as expected. The mod involves a physical replacement of the card's stock 8 Gbit memory chips with 16 Gbit ones; and shorting certain straps on the PCB that let it recognize the desired memory chip brand and density. After the mod, the GeForce driver and GPU-Z are able to read 16 GB of video memory, and the card is able to handle stress tests such as FurMark. The card was initially underperforming in 3DMark, putting out a TimeSpy score of just 8356 points; but following the clock-speed lock fix, is able to score around 13000 points.

Intel i7 11700K Looses to Ryzen 7 5800X - tech
(hx) 06:06 PM CET - Mar,06 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel’s 11th gen desktop processor lineup will feature both Rocket Lake-S and Comet Lake-S “refresh” CPUs. The 11th generation lineup includes 13 Rocket Lake/RKL and a total of 13 Comet Lake refresh desktop CPUs. Rocket Lake lineup features the core i9, i7 & i5 variants, while the Comet Lake refresh desktop CPUs will come in Core i3, Pentium & Celeron variants. Intel has officially confirmed that its 11th gen Rocket Lake-S desktop CPUs will be launching on the 30th of March, 2021. According to SiSoftware’s own benchmark results, the new Intel Core i7-11700K was slower than AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X, and also more inefficient than Skylake and power-hungry too. These results clearly show that Intel’s performance, albeit substantial, still trails its main competitor, AMD. In a core-for-core comparison, Intel is slightly slower and a lot more inefficient as well. There are rumors circulating that Intel could aggressively price these chips at around $400 USD for the Core i9 and $300 USD for the Core i7 SKU, which is necessary if they want to compete with AMD’s flagship Zen 3 processors.

Intel Confirms March 30 for Rocket Lake-S Launch - tech
    (hx) 12:14 AM CET - Mar,03 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel in a statement to Hardwareluxx has confirmed that the release date for the company's next-gen CPU family, codenamed Rocket Lake-S, will indeed see a global launch come March 30th. The 11000 family of CPUs is already being sold on Germany, however, via etailer Mindfactory.de, who apparently jumped the gun on the actual availability of said CPUs. Mindfactory only ships within Germany, meaning that that country is actually the sole current field for Intel's latest-gen CPUs. The etailer says that they have the right to sell the CPUs, and stands by its decision, which likely means that their supplier failed to convey the proper NDAs and launch dates when selling - or so we're led to believe. That's the reason why benchmarks of Intel's 11000-series are already in the wild - even for currently unannounced CPUs, such as the Core i7-11700K. WCCFTech over the weekend got their hands on the full table for Intel's upcoming Core i9 and Core i7 products (at least those available at launch). Mainstream CPUs on the Core i5 family and below weren't listed, however. It remains to be seen whether the previously speculated March 15th launch date will actually be the official announcement date from Intel, of if something else is afoot for that particular day of March.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards already available on second-hand market - tech
    (hx) 12:11 PM CET - Feb,28 2021 - Post a comment / read (11)
NVIDIA’s upcoming mid-range GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card has just appeared on Belarusian second-hand market Onliner. Probably no other graphics card in history was sold in this number before it was even officially released. We have been hearing about distributors and retailers selling RTX 3060 before the embargo in almost every part of the planet. This is despite no drivers being available, which essentially generates those cards useless in gaming, but not for mining. A person named Artem is offering three Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Eagle OC graphics cards for sale at a price of 2800 BYN, which is 1080 USD. Unfortunately, this is not the price of all three cards, but for a single one. So yes, this person is selling RTX 3060 for 1080 USD each. The description says that one of the graphics cards was already unpacked for verification. One would guess that the verification was limited to checking mining performance. NVIDIA has announced that RTX 3060 will be the first graphics card that will feature a crypto-mining limiter, that will reduce the hash rate once the firmware detects the mining algorithm. Upon checking how slow the graphics card is, the seller might have decided to get rid of the graphics cards. However, there are reports that due to the high value of cryptocurrency, the RTX 3060 can still generate enough money to be considered profitable. (thanks Videocardz.com)

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Anti-Mining Feature - tech
    (hx) 11:34 AM CET - Feb,21 2021 - Post a comment / read (12)
NVIDIA announced (thanks Csimbi) the company's first Crypto Mining Processor (CPM) that serves the purpose of having a dedicated processor only for mining with no video outputs. Alongside the new processors, the company has also announced that in the next driver update the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU will get Etherium mining performance halved, limiting the use of this GPU SKU by miners. However, up until now, we have thought that NVIDIA is limiting the mining performance of this card by simply having a driver detect if crypto mining algorithms are in place and limit the performance. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. According to Bryan Del Rizzo, director of global PR for GeForce, more things are working behind the driver. According to Mr. Del Rizzo: "It's not just a driver thing. There is a secure handshake between the driver, the RTX 3060 silicon, and the BIOS (firmware) that prevents removal of the hash rate limiter." This means that essentially, NVIDIA can find any way to cripple the mining hash rate even if you didn't update your driver version. At the same time, according to Kopite7Kimi, we are possibly expecting to see NVIDIA relaunch its existing SKUs under a different ID, which would feature a built-in anti-crypto mining algorithm. What the company does remains to be seen.

Microsoft acknowledges the Windows 10 21H1 update - tech
    (hx) 12:08 AM CET - Feb,18 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has finally acknowledged the next Windows 10 update, version 21H1, publicly. The company has adopted a twice-a-year release cadence for its Windows 10 feature updates for a while now, but it's been unusually quiet about the update we'd expect this spring. Now, it has finally shown up in a blog post on the Tech Community forums, and it seems like it will be a pretty small update. The post is about the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program, and the changes that version 21H1 will bring - or rather, the changes it won't. The blog post is nearly a carbon copy of the post for version 20H2, and it confirms that no changes are being made to hardware certification. All the same requirements and rules that applied to Windows 10 version 2004 a year ago remain the same for both of the versions that follow it.

If you're on the Beta channel, you're going to end up on build 19043.844, and you can check and find that you're on version 21H1. If you're on the Release Preview ring, you should actually get the same cumulative update today, but you'll end up on build 19042.844. Oddly, Microsoft published a second blog post to announce the cumulative update. That's it though, as this is a very minor update. Microsoft only said that broad deployment of the update will begin in the first half of this year, and this is the first time that it didn't give the feature update a name like the Windows 10 May 2021 Update. Now, it's just Windows 10, version 21H1.

Chinese GPU miners buying Nvidia laptops to mine Ether - tech
    (hx) 11:04 PM CET - Feb,15 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Chinese cryptocurrency miners are reportedly buying Nvidia's new laptops to mine Ether ( ETH ) amid the altcoin hitting new all-time highs . Nvidia's latest GeForce RTX 30 laptops have become increasingly popular in China as a tool for mining cryptocurrency, according to several sources. On Feb. 6, a Weibo user known as BTCer posted a bunch of images showing off GeForce RTX 30 series gaming laptops making up a solid crypto mining farm. "A laptop mine is up?," BTCer noted in the post depicting dozens of laptops stacked up on shelves. Several tech media outlets including VideoCardz and Wccftech subsequently suggested that the mining farm was set up specifically for mining Ether. The reports also cited a recent fun video by Bilibili user Fish Pond F2pool showing how easy it is to mine crypto on a laptop equipped with a new RTX 3060 graphics card. Using a laptop plugged into the wall socket at Starbucks, the user reportedly mined 0.00053 ETH (worth an estimated $0.89) in around two hours. According to some estimations , one GeForce RTX 3060 laptop can potentially generate up to around 2.3 ETH per year ( $3,900 ) at the current prices, apparently being able to cover up the cost of the laptop and energy costs in China. Having arrived in market on Jan. 26, different GeForce RTX 30 series laptops are priced between $1,000 and $2,000. Chinese GPU miners are apparently driving more demand to the already shortaged market, should the latest reports be true. In January 2021, Nvidia's chief financial officer Colette Kress said that the company's supply "will likely remain lean throughout Q1," stating that gaming demand was "off the charts," and the firm has not been able to keep up. Ether price spikes have historically been associated with higher miner rewards , particularly generated through abnormally high gas fees . On Feb. 5, average gas fees peaked at an all-time high of $25.2 amid Ethereum breaking above $1,700. As Ethereum is set to become a Proof-of-Stake blockchain one day, the Ethereum mining community will have to find other options to generate rewards. As reported, the first phase of Ethereum's PoS upgrade has been launched in late 2020 .

When it launched back in 2016, the Nvidia 1050 Ti was undoubtedly a very popular graphics card when it came to more budget-focused consumers. Was it a world-beater? Absolutely not. However, it was more than good enough to give a lot of people a very affordable entry-point to the world of PC gaming. With current modern GPU stock levels so poor though, largely thanks to a combination of consumer demand, scalpers, and cryptocurrency miners, (and the possibility that they’re simply not being made in particularly high volumes), following a report via Videocardz, it is being suggested that in something of a response, Nvidia may be set to re-start the production of the 1050 Ti!

It is time for another AMD graphics driver update. The red team's driver suite received an update today that bumped it up to version number 21.2.2 of the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 (still) Edition series of releases. AMD did not detail any game optimizations that may be present in the driver this time. This release seems to be solely focused on fixing a few specific issues related to Blender, Quake III Arena, and AMD Smart Access Memory.
    • Objects may fail to render correctly when using EEVEE render in Blender on Radeon RX 400 and Radeon RX 500 series graphics products.
    • Quake III Arena™ may experience corruption during loading or gameplay.
    • Performance may be lower than expected in Wolfenstein: Youngblood when a system is AMD Smart Access Memory enabled.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti with 12GB memory to launch in April? - tech
    (hx) 12:26 AM CET - Feb,09 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
At the recent CES 2021 keynote, NVIDIA officially announced the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU having 12GB of VRAM. Now we have some fresh info on this upcoming mainstream RTX 3060 12GB Ampere SKU. Wccftech reports that this card is officially launching this month on February 25th at 6AM Pacific Time.

The date has not been confirmed by other sources yet. This is actually a third date from the same roadmap, so I wouldn’t necessarily believe that cannot change again. However, this is the latest information that I have. More importantly though, the card is no longer listed as ‘on hold’! Kopite has revealed that the card might feature 10240 CUDA cores, which means that the RTX 3080 would offer 80 Streaming Multiprocessors, 12 more than RTX 3080 and 2 fewer than RTX 3090. Thus the card should offer a very similar performance to RTX 3090, but it will all depend on the clock speeds and enforced TDP (earlier reports have suggested it will be 320W like RTX 3080). With 12GB GDDR6X memory, the graphics card would have to rely on a wider 384-bit memory bus. Previous rumors have suggested that the card might feature 20 GB GDDR6X memory, in fact, this information has been available to board partners for at least 2 months. Some of them have already prepared product codes for the RTX 3080 Ti 20GB. However, it would seem that those product codes need to change now.

A beta version of iOS 14.5 just released to developers introduces the ability for Face ID to unlock your phone even when wearing a lower-face mask, provided the user is also wearing an Apple watch. Face ID by itself offers reduced security in this new mask mode, but the presence of an authenticated, unlocked Apple Watch provides enough of an extra security signal to compensate. In the beta version currently available to developers, the feature must be enabled manually. Apple has not announced when iOS 14.5 will be available to the general public.

MD graphics users now have another driver waiting for them, as the red teaming came out with the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.2.1 suite today. Just like the AMD driver from last month, this one still sports the 'Adrenalin 2020' name tag. It's unclear when will the yearly feature revamp and name refresh come through this time. There is only one major change listed for this driver, which is the optimization of The Medium, Bloober Team's latest psychological horror game. According to AMD's testing, today's 21.2.1 driver can improve performance by a whopping 9% compared to machines using the previous driver

    Support For

    Medium

    • Up to 9% increase in performance in The Medium @ 4K High settings, with Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.2.1 on the 16GB Radeon RX 6800XT graphics card, versus the previous software driver edition 21.1.1. RS-351

    Fixed Issues

    • Display flicker or corruption may be experienced when two displays are connected to Radeon RX Vega series graphics products with at least one display set to a high refresh rate.

AMD is slowly preparing to launch its next-generation of mid-range graphics cards based on the RDNA 2 architecture. Following the launch of Navi 21 GPU SKUs, next in line comes the slower Navi 22 variant with fewer compute units (CU). Envisioned to compete against NVIDIA's GA104 and GA106 GPU SKUs, the Navi 22 based GPU is targeting 1440p gamers mainly. Today, thanks to Andreas Schilling from the German website HardwareLuxx, we got a few pieces of information regarding AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card. The source is claiming that we are getting this card sometime in the first half of this year, with the possibility to get it in Q1. The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card is designed for 1440p gaming as mentioned, and its VRAM configuration is interesting. It features 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, which is more than enough for the types of workloads this card is meant for. The memory communicates using 192-bit bus. The Navi 22 GPU is configured for 40 CUs in total, with 2560 cores maximum. The Radeon RX 6700 XT features the Navi 22 XT variant with the fully enabled die, while its smaller brother Radeon RX 6700 is featuring Navi 22 XL die that has possibly fewer CUs and smaller TDP. The pricing of the upcoming cards is unknown.

Google Competitor Presearch Launches Decentralized Search Engine - tech
    (hx) 01:52 PM CET - Jan,30 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
Blockchain-based startup Presearch has released a decentralized search engine to help provide a more private alternative to Google. Taking a play out of privacy-centric web browser Brave's book, it also rewards its users with it native crypto token, PRE. The Ethereum-based project uses searches powered by independent nodes to help protect the identity of the people who make queries for data. Moreover, it puts a dent in the monopolistic power of Google to organize and rank results. The project's origin story begins in 2011, when Colin Pape's ShopCity.com had its content buried by Google's algorithm. The company filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission that the results were due to Google's algorithm preferring its own, competing products over ShopCity's. Ultimately, Pape decided there was a need for an independent search engine, so he started building Presearch. The rollout of the new search engine will occur during the next two weeks as it transitions from a third-party tool to a fully decentralized search engine. The first nodes will be run by the Presearch team while beta testing of independent nodes is finalized and implemented. The new system will help protect personally identifiable information like user IP addresses, device info, browsers, and location data. Presearch says it has grown to over 1.7 million registered users with around 300,000 active. Over 100 operators are providing feedback during beta testing of user nodes.

AMD 21.1.1 Adrenalin driver comes with support for Hitman 3 - tech
    (hx) 10:02 PM CET - Jan,21 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD today delivered its first graphics driver of 2021, providing support and optimizations for two games in particular: Hitman 3 and Quake II RTX. The newly released Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.1.1 driver also comes with a suite of bug fixes. It doesn't appear as though AMD is changing the branding of its driver just yet. IO Interactive's Hitman 3 launched yesterday, bringing back Agent 47 for another round of assassinations in the rebooted trilogy. According to AMD, this driver will provide performance improvements of up to 10% compared to the 20.12.1 driver. The testing had been done on an RX 6800 XT 16GB GPU and a Ryzen 9 5900X CPU with Hitman 3 running at 4K Ultra settings.

The fixed issues in this release detailed by AMD are as follows:

    • The recording and streaming overlay indicator may sometimes reset itself to the default position.
    • Performance Metrics Overlay size may intermittently reset or may not match values that are set in Radeon Software after performing a task switch.
    • The Radeon Software installer screen can sometimes display the incorrect release date of the Radeon Software version you are installing.
    • Performance Metrics Overlay may flicker during video playback on displays with HDR enabled.
    • Reflections in Grand Theft Auto V™ may fail to appear when ‘Reflection MSAA’ is enabled in the game settings.
    • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds™ session timer may continue in Radeon Software even after the game has been exited.
    • DOOM Eternal™ may experience an application crash while gaming and having Steam™ overlay enabled.
    • Recorded content from Radeon Software may appear cropped or recorded at an incorrect resolution on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products.
    • The Samsung™ Odyssey G9 C49G95T may experience display or corruption issues when set to 5120x1440@240hz.
    • Anisotropic Filtering in Radeon™ Software graphics settings is not taking effect in DirectX®9 applications on RDNA graphics products.
    • Some displays such as the Sceptre C series or Samsung™ Odyssey G9 series may experience an intermittent black screen on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products.
    • Oculus Link users may experience intermittent crashes on Polaris and Vega series graphics products.
