Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti supports 22GB of GDDR6 - tech
(d@rkfu) 11:47 AM CEST - May,11 2021 - Post a comment
Known for doubling the VRAM of an RTX 3070 and an RTX 2070 card, Vik-On has now done something similar to an RTX 2080 Ti. Although he couldn't actually mod 22GB of GDDR6 memory into an RTX 2080 Ti card, he has proven that such feat is possible with the right skills, equipment, and the correct firmware. If you have watched the video where the modder doubles the memory of an RTX 3070 card, you may fully appreciate how complex this process can be. However, in his latest attempt to mod a graphics card, he complicated things a bit more. Instead of just adding memory to a brand new card and making the appropriate adjustments for it to work, the modder grabbed a used and damaged RTX 2080 Ti. The card had already gone through three different stores to be repaired, but instead of fixing it, the card just got worse. When all seemed lost, the modder took matters into his own hands. After resoldering the GPU, fixing and testing the PCB, and installing new memory chips and other missing components, VIK-on made a strap mod to trick the GPU BIOS into supporting more memory.

Antminer has recently announced their most powerful Ethereum miner yet the E9 with performance of 3 GH/s as the price of Ethereum reaches all-time highs. The Chinese manufacturer advertises that this is equivalent to 32 NVIDIA RTX 3080 cards while coming in with significantly less power consumption and likely a lower price. The Antminer E9 achieves its 3 GH/s mining speed with a power consumption of just 2556 W which gives it an efficiency of 0.85 J/M which would make it one of the most efficient Ethereum miners available. While the ASIC appears to offer significant advantages it is unlikely to meet the global demand for global Ethereum miners and is unlikely to affect global GPU shortages. Bitmain did not announce specific pricing or availability information for the Antminer E9 ASIC.

AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.4.1 driver - tech
(hx) 08:38 PM CEST - Apr,20 2021 - Post a comment
AMD today released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1 drivers, which introduce major updates to the soft-product that completes your AMD Radeon graphics cards. The drivers come with updates to the Radeon Software interface, and the AMD Link remote-gameplay utility. Radeon Software now comes with an improved installer with installation presets that let you choose between a Full (typical) installation, with all software features installed; a Minimal installation with an interface that only has basic settings related to the display and GPU; and "driver-only" that only installs the display driver, and no additional software. There are several new features introduced within Radeon Software. Vivid Gaming Display Color Enhancement is a new monitor color profile that enables a more "vivid" color palette that lets you liven up "color deficient" scenes. The interface lets you take control of protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia components of the color. The search bar that lets you dig through the hundreds of features, has been improved. There are many other minor UI improvements, such as stats in the Games tab, a toggle for the in-built web-browser, and global controls for the hotkeys.

Perhaps the most talked about feature addition with Radeon Software 21.4.1, has to be the AMD Link remote-gaming feature. Until now, AMD Link was a mobile app that let you control your drivers. It's grown in functionality over the years to include game streaming. Your game, as rendered on your PC, is streamed to your portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs; and now AMD has also introduced a Windows app that lets you share your gameplay with anyone with the app, across the Internet. The process of sharing is very similar to that of Team Viewer. Besides gameplay, AMD Link can also let you share your non-gaming Desktop. AMD has significantly updated the streaming backend, which now offers better visuals and lower latencies, along with a dynamic quality control that adjusts quality with changes to your Internet bandwidth/latency. The service now supports up to 4K UHD resolution, with refresh-rates of up to 144 Hz.

A number of bugs have been fixed with this release, as llisted below.
  • Brightness flickering may intermittently occur in some games or applications when Radeon FreeSync is enabled, and the game is set to use borderless fullscreen.
  • SteamVR may experience an application crash when a VR headset is connected on Radeon RX 500 series graphics products.
  • Some high refresh rate, high resolution TV displays may experience corruption when connected via HDMI on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products.
  • Applying changes in Radeon Performance Tuning may sometimes fail to take effect for changes made to power tuning.
  • Lower than expected performance may be experienced in some CPU intensive workloads or games.
  • Global performance tuning overclock profiles may sometimes override game specific performance tuning profiles or cause game specific performance tuning profiles to fail to load on a games launch.
  • Radeon Chill may experience lower than expected performance when a game is left idle for an extended period with Radeon Chill enabled.
  • Flickering may be observed in Radeon Software performance overlay while playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products.
How to Mine Chia, Hard Drive crypto mining - tech
(hx) 03:38 PM CEST - Apr,20 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
A new cryptocurrency going by the name of Chia could bring about a boom in demand for HDD and SSD, which have been kept relatively untouched by the latest mining and supply constraints. However, optimistic predictions of falling prices for NAND (optimistic for consumers, that is) could prove to be erroneous. Apparently, the new cryptocurrency, which saw its whitepaper being published in February 9th and has already led to shortages of high-performance SSDs from China's Jiahe Jinwei. The cryptocurrency was designed to be mined in SSDs and HDDs, looking to cut on electricity cost from proof of Work (PoW) cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and (still) Ethereum. The intention is for the cryptocurrency to have as broad an appeal as possible, by excluding the need for prohibitive investments in either ASICs (for Bitcoin) or GPUs (for Ethereum and other Dagger/Hashimoto-based calculations). It also leverages that which is most widely available and oftentimes left empty of any workload - storage space. Due to this, it's been reported that Chinese miners are already buying HDDs (4 TB through to 18 TB) and SSDs (mainly NVMe solutions) in bulk. This could prevent technologists from ushering in the current trend of falling storage pricing - if demand becomes as crazy as it has become in the GPU space. Chia was designed by BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen, and uses a specific type of consensus and ledger-assurance system that's described as Proofs of Space and Time. The blockchain is farmed via Proof of Space, which is done inside your HDD or SSD via computing through already-in-storage models, and then contacts Chia's servers for Proof of Time - which essentially ensures that a required amount of time has passed between the block's generation and its actual inclusion in the network, to prevent any ill-intentioned farmer from assuming control of the network. There are several advantages to farming a cryptocurrency such as Chia over the more general proof of work models. HDDs and SSDs take up much lesser space than a rack of GPUs, whilst consuming much less power, generating much less heat and noise, and thus allowing for much higher scalings in farming scenarios (which is what Chia calls its mining, because it's more ecologically sustainable than the usual mining workloads).

DRAM Prices Projected to Rise by 18-23% QoQ in 2Q21 - tech
(hx) 11:02 AM CEST - Apr,20 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
TrendForce's investigations find that DRAM suppliers and major PC OEMs are currently participating in the critical period of negotiating with each other over contract prices for 2Q21. Although these negotiations have yet to be finalized, the ASP of mainstream DDR4 1G*8 2666 Mbps modules has already increased by nearly 25% QoQ as of now, according to data on ongoing transactions. This represents a higher price hike than TrendForce's prior forecast of "nearly 20%". On the other hand, prices are likewise rising across various DRAM product categories in 2Q21, including DDR3/4 specialty DRAM, mobile DRAM, graphics DRAM, and in particular server DRAM, which is highly related to PC DRAM and is therefore also undergoing a higher price hike than previously expected. TrendForce is therefore revising up its forecast of overall DRAM price hike for 2Q21 from 13-18% QoQ to 18-23% QoQ instead. However, the actual increase in prices of various DRAM product categories will depend on the production capacities allocated to the respective products by DRAM suppliers.

PC DRAM prices are now expected to undergo a 23-28% QoQ growth in 2Q21 due to the increased production of notebook computers
PC DRAM contract prices are rising by a higher margin than previously expected for 2Q21 primarily because major PC OEMs are now aggressively expanding their production targets. Furthermore, as second quarters are generally peak seasons for notebook production, PC ODMs are now estimated to increase their quarterly production of notebook computers by about 7.9% QoQ in 2Q21. Finally, with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccination rates remain relatively low across the globe, meaning WFH and distance education are likely to persist and create continued demand for notebook computers, thereby further expanding the hike in PC DRAM prices.

DRAM Suppliers will enjoy increased bargaining power in price negotiations as server DRAM prices are expected to increase by 20-25% QoQ in 2Q21
Apart from the issue of short DRAM supply, server DRAM procurement in 2Q21 has benefitted from the positive turn in the view of enterprises toward IT investments as well as the stronger-than-expected demand related to cloud migration. There was already a supply gap in 1Q21, and these developments will further drive up demand in 2Q21. Hence, difficulty has increased for buyers and suppliers in reaching an agreement on price. Suppliers are in a more advantageous position in contract negotiations since the DRAM market is an oligopoly. Therefore, compared to the previous forecast of nearly 20%, TrendForce is now expecting server DRAM contract prices to increase by 20-25% QoQ in 2Q21.

KB5001330 Bad Gaming Performance from Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 09:21 PM CEST - Apr,19 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Problems range from Vsync issues to games stuttering, frames dropping, and in some cases frequent BSOD crashes. It’s far from an isolated incident, with many comments identifying that the Windows 10 update is the culprit, and it doesn’t look like you’ll be safe on either side of the colour spectrum, either. Team green, blue, and red are all affected with a wide range of Nvidia and AMD graphics cards and Intel and AMD CPUs caught up in the mix. It looks like the issues are present on Windows 10 versions KB5001330 and KB5001337, according to a report from Computer Base. Nvidia has put out a statement on the issue, saying "if you are seeing lower performance in games, check if rolling back Windows 10 Update KB5000842 solves the issue".

Redditors give a non-exhaustive list of games suffering from the update, including Doom Eternal, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Red Dead Redemption 2, although there could be many more. There are ways to boost fps if Windows 10 doesn’t take no for an answer, which it regularly doesn’t, but there’s no guarantee these methods will help, so it’s best to roll back your update if you’re stuck with rampant fps issues that weren’t there before.

Intel's new driver 27.20.100.9466 fixes Cyberpunk 2077 glitches - tech
(hx) 06:26 PM CEST - Apr,17 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel today has released its latest DCH display driver bringing the version up to 27.20.100.9466. The driver fixes glitches related to graphics rendering in a few titles like Cyberpunk 2077, although the company has noted the game is still not playable as according to its internal testing, Intel's Iris Xe graphics only gets around 20fps. So it is safe to assume that the slower UHD Graphics will struggle even more. It also resolves some display problems on 8K monitors and issues related to Multi-Stream Transport (MST) or Daisy Chaining.
  • Minor graphic anomalies seen on main character during character creation in Cyberpunk 2077 (DX12).
  • Minor graphic anomalies seen on floor when graphics quality is set to High in Valorant.
  • Minor graphic anomalies seen in Battlefield I (DX11) and Valheim(Vulkan) (loading screen).
  • Black squares seen after cutscenes with Video Quality Profile set to High in Wolfenstein: Youngblood (Vulkan).
  • Intermittent crash or hang seen in Cyberpunk 2077 (DX12), Ridge Racer Unbounded, StarCraft 2, Horizon Zero Dawn (DX12).
  • Lag observed while playing a 4K/2K/ Full HD video in 8K60 Tiled mode with application window maximized.
  • Video freezes and lags when playing movie in Movies and TV application and zooming in / out by double clicks.
  • Video will freeze when exit from full screen to small window during video playback.
  • Green color corruption observed while rotating media playback.
  • MST side monitors will not display after unplug DP switch side monitor and plug to MST side.
  • Fourth display cannot light on in second screen only mode when four displays are connected via DP in daisy chain.
  • 8K monitor keeps blinking in extend mode/ 2nd only mode.
  • Video will show lag or garbage observed in full screen mode with 8K monitor connected.
  • 8K monitor is inactive after upgrade to latest graphics driver.
  • Half display may blank out when rebooting with 4K single Tiled display connected via Display Port.
In terms of compatibility, there are no major changes here. You'll need a 6th-generation Intel Core processor or newer, or related Celeron and Pentium processors with Intel HD Graphics 500 and higher. The driver is also compatible with Iris Xe-based graphics, be it integrated or dedicated. Software-wise, the driver will work with any version of Windows 10 starting with version 1709. To download the 27.20.100.9466 driver, head over to Intel's official website here. As usual, the display driver package contains the graphics driver, the Intel Graphics Command Center, audio drivers, and more.

Windows 10 version 21H1 is coming - tech
(hx) 09:37 AM CEST - Apr,05 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Spring is one of the two seasons of the year when Microsoft typically releases a new feature update for Windows 10, and that means we're due for another one soon. Microsoft has already been testing the next feature update - known as version 21H1 - for a while now, and it shouldn't be too long before it becomes publicly available. Moving to version 21H1, there's some background required here. For the past couple of years, Microsoft has released a major feature update in the spring (see versions 1903 and 2004) and a smaller update focused on refinements and smaller improvements in the fall (versions 1909 and 20H2). These updates are delivered through enablement packages, meaning the actual bits in the fall updates are the same as the spring update, but they have an enablement package that makes certain features light up. The spring and fall updates each year even receive the exact same cumulative updates every month. This time, however, the spring update - version 21H1 - is yet another enablement package update, meaning it's only lighting up certain changes that are already hidden in version 2004 and 20H2. In fact, this is the smallest feature update Windows 10 has had, and it can hardly be considered a "feature update". It's only here to line up with Microsoft's usual timeframe for these updates. So what exactly is new?

For now, Windows 10 version 21H1 should be releasing soon, and even if it doesn't bring much that's new, it should at least be safe to install considering it doesn't bring any big changes. Microsoft does say version 21H1 will remove the Edge Legacy browser from the operating system, but in reality, that's being removed from older versions of Windows 10 with a cumulative update in April, too. Are you planning on installing Windows 10 version 21H1 as soon as it's available?

Nvidia Reported Ramps Up GTX 1650 GPU Supplies! - tech
(d@rkfu) 10:34 PM CEST - Apr,04 2021 - Post a comment
As reported by the Chiphell forum (via PC Gamer), consumers will start seeing more availability of the TU117-powered GTX 1650 cards from this month and into May. In the report, sources reportedly close to Nvidia have said that the company has decided to attempt to give consumers at least some GPU options (that won’t be immediately gobbled up by Cryptocurrency miners or scalpers) by reutilizing some older chipsets/graphics card designs. I write this in the plural because we’ve already seen some indications that Nvidia has already done this with the exceptionally popular 1050 Ti. With the GTX 1650 offering a slightly more potent option when compared to the 1050 Ti, while I’ll freely admit that it isn’t exactly a colossal powerhouse, if you are currently trying to cobble together a budget PC gaming build, it would still represent an excellent choice. Well, presuming that Nvidia keeps the 1650 at the same price it has been for the last 2 years since it was released.

(hx) 09:55 PM CEST - Mar,30 2021 - Post a comment
NVIDIA today released the latest version of GeForce Software. Version 465.89 WHQL comes with optimization for "DiRT 5" update with raytracing support; "Outriders," and "Evil Genius 2: World Domination." More importantly, the drivers formally introduce Resizable BAR support for GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" desktop and mobile discrete GPUs. Priliminary (beta) support is also added for virtualization on GeForce GPUs. Other major changes include support for the new OpenCL 3.0 compute API, NVIDIA SLI support for "Shenmue III" and "The Medium" (on "Turing" GPUs only). Support for 8K TVs is improved by extending the DP-to-HDMI 2.1 PCON clock frequency range. Among the handful issues fixed with 465.89 WHQL are pixellated smoke with "Rainbow 6 Siege" in Vulkan API mode; a crash with X4 on RTX 30-series; a BSOD when a Samsung Odyssey G9 display is paired with HDMI TV; a BSOD when playing games and watching YouTube videos simultaneously on an RTX 2060; "Sunset Overdrive" showing green display corruption with in-game DOF enabled; Realtek DP to HDMI 2.1 converters being limited to 600 MHz pixel clock, abnormal idle power draw on "Turing" and "Ampere" GPUs with higher refresh-rate G-SYNC monitors; and screenshots captured using GeForce Experience appearing washed out with HDR enabled.
