AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.2 Released - tech
(hx) 09:51 PM CEST - Jun,29 2021 - Post a comment
AMD today released the latest version of the Radeon Software Adrenalin drivers. Version 21.6.2 beta comes with support for real-time raytracing in "DOOM Eternal," the first game to implement Vulkan RT. The drivers also add support for a handful new Vulkan API extensions, including "VK_EXT_custom_border_color," "VK_KHR_shader_subgroup_uniform_control_flow," and "VK_EXT_color_write_enable." Among the handful issues fixed are visual artifacts on "MechWarrior 5 : Mercenaries" in DirectX 11 mode, on Radeon RX 6000 series; the "Error 184" message when running AMD's auto-detect and install drivers mode on Windows 7; and an application freeze noticed with Adobe Substance 3D Painter on some RX 6000 series graphics products.

Support For
  • DOOM Eternal next-gen update
  • Vulkan raytracing
Added Vulkan Support
  • VK_EXT_custom_border_color: This extension allows applications to specify a custom border color for when the sampler address mode VK_SAMPLER_ADDRESS_MODE_CLAMP_TO_BORDER is used.
  • VK_KHR_shader_subgroup_uniform_control_flow: This extension exposes the availability of the SPV_KHR_subgroup_uniform_control_flow SPIR-V extension for shader modules use. The SPIR-V extension provides stronger guarantees that diverged subgroups will reconverge.
  • VK_EXT_color_write_enable: This extension allows applications to selectively enable and disable writes to output color attachments via a pipeline dynamic state. This has the potential to reduce pipeline counts for increased efficiency.
Fixed Issues
  • While playing MechWarrior 5 : Mercenaries on DirectX 11, visual artifacts may be observed on some AMD Radeon graphics products such as Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products.
  • An error message - Error 184 - may be received after running the AMD Auto-Detect and Install Updates utility program on Windows 7 based systems.
  • Adobe Substance 3D Painter may freeze while running this application on some AMD Radeon graphics products such as Radeon RX 6900.
Known Issues
  • Some users may experience elevated memory usage by AMD User Experience Program. A temporary workaround is to opt-out of the AMD User Experience Program. Learn more from AMD here on how to opt out of the program.
  • Resident Evil Village may experience an intermittent application hang or TDR on AMD Radeon VII graphics products in the first mission of the game.
  • Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.
  • Connecting two displays with large differences in resolution/refresh rates may cause flickering on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products.
  • An Oculus service error may be received on Radeon RX 5000 & 6000 series graphics products which prevents the Oculus Link setup software from running.
  • Radeon performance metrics and logging features may intermittently report extremely high and incorrect memory clock values.
  • If Ryzen Master is not detected in Adrenalin software after installation, a system restart may be required.
  • If Blue or Black screen is observed in mobile systems, temporarily disable Enhanced sign-in
  • A driver mismatch error may appear when two versions of Radeon software (Windows Store & AMD Support versions) are installed on your system. As a temporary workaround, launch the Windows Store version of Radeon software.
  • AMD is investigating an issue that may cause a small impact to battery life on AMD Ryzen 5000 notebooks.
  • A Blue or Black screen may be observed after updating to the latest Radeon Software. A workaround is to disable core isolation.
  • AMD is investigating a D3 code that may be seen in some motherboard after updating to the latest Radeon Software.
  • Lower than expected performance may be observed on select AMD Athlon mobile systems.

Microsoft details the features being removed in Windows 11 - tech
(hx) 03:32 PM CEST - Jun,25 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 today, sharing with the world the work that is has been doing in the past year to revamp Windows with new UI elements, a new store that supports Android apps, and more. The company also detailed the minimum hardware requirements needed to run the OS, which is expected to be released this holiday. For eligible Windows 10 users, the latest OS will be a free upgrade. While there is a lot of information about the new features, UI changes, and improvements, the company has also detailed all the features that it will be deprecating or removing from Windows 10 when users upgrade to Windows 11. While the list of deprecated features between major Windows 10 releases was usually small, there are a bunch of significant features that will no longer be worked on or completely removed from Windows 11. Some of these features are obvious additions, such as the tiles and app folders in the Start menu. With Windows 11 moving to a new layout that consists of just app icons, the OS will not retain any folders made in the Start menu when it upgrades to Windows 11. Another feature that will be removed is the ability to sync wallpapers across devices.

The company is also making S Mode – a version of the OS that prevents the installation of non-Store apps – available only for Windows 11 Home users. Previously, S Mode was essentially a locked-down version of Windows 10 Pro, so it isn’t clear if there will be a path for those running Windows 10 in S Mode to upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 11 will also prevent users from changing the position of the taskbar, which means that it is locked to the bottom of the screen, unlike with older versions that allowed for moving the taskbar to the top, or the sides. Here is the complete list of deprecated features:
  • Cortana will no longer be included in the first boot experience or pinned to the Taskbar.
  • Desktop wallpaper cannot be roamed to or from device when signed in with a Microsoft account.
  • Internet Explorer is disabled. Microsoft Edge is the recommended replacement and includes IE Mode which may be useful in certain scenarios.
  • Math Input Panel is removed. Math Recognizer will install on demand and includes the math input control and recognizer. Math inking in apps like OneNote are not impacted by this change.
  • News & Interests has evolved. New functionality has been added which can be found by clicking the Widgets icon on the Taskbar.
  • Quick Status from the Lockscreen and associated settings are removed.
  • S Mode is only available now for Windows 11 Home edition.
  • Snipping Tool continues to be available but the old design and functionality in the Windows 10 version has been replaced with those of the app previously known as Snip & Sketch.
  • Start is significantly changed in Windows 11 including the following key deprecations and removals:
    • Named groups and folders of apps are no longer supported and the layout is not currently resizable.
    • Pinned apps and sites will not migrate when upgrading from Windows 10.
    • Live Tiles are no longer available. For glanceable, dynamic content, see the new Widgets feature.
  • Tablet Mode is removed and new functionality and capability is included for keyboard attach and detach postures.
  • Taskbar functionality is changed including:
    • People is no longer present on the Taskbar.
    • Some icons may no longer appear in the System Tray (systray) for upgraded devices including previous customizations.
    • Alignment to the bottom of the screen is the only location allowed.
    • Apps can no longer customize areas of the Taskbar.
  • Timeline is removed. Some similar functionality is available in Microsoft Edge.
  • Touch Keyboard will no longer dock and undock keyboard layouts on screen sizes 18 inches and larger.
  • Wallet is removed.

Additionally, there are a bunch of apps that will no longer be pre-loaded in the OS, which the company says can be installed from the Microsoft Store. This includes the OneNote for Windows 10 app, which is the UWP-based version of OneNote. Skype is also being removed in favor of Teams in Windows 11.

Here are the four apps that will be removed:

With the official launch of Windows 11 still a few months away, it is not clear if there will be any additions or changes to these lists.

AMD 21.6.1 driver drops support for Windows 7/8/8.1 - tech
(hx) 09:19 AM CEST - Jun,22 2021 - Post a comment
AMD has released a brand new driver for its graphics cards. According to the red team, the AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 driver adds official support for FidelityFX Super Resolution for select titles. In addition, this driver adds support for the AMD Radeon RX 6800M GPU and Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. Moreover, this new driver fixes a number of bugs and issues. For instance, it fixes a crash in Anno 1800 upon launching the game when running DirectX 12. It also resolves a crash that could occur when enabling Ray Tracing in Ring of Elysium on DirectX 12.
  • Radeon FreeSync™ may intermittently become locked while on desktop after performing task switching between extended and primary displays upon closing a game, causing poor performance or stuttering.

  • Anno 1800™ may crash upon launching this game when running DirectX®12.

  • AMD cleanup utility may clean up chipset/RAID installer related folders/registries from the system.

  • Some Radeon Graphics products may experience lower than expected performance in Destiny 2™ when compared to previous Radeon Software versions.

  • Upon joining the AMD User Experience Program, the AMD User Experience Program Master service may have higher than expected CPU utilization.

  • Enabling Ray Tracing while running Ring of Elysium™ on DirectX®12 may cause this game to crash.

The 21.6.1 driver ends support for Windows 8.1 and earlier versions of Windows, and also won't be supporting pre-Polaris cards. This means the driver is only compatible with Windows 10 64-bit OS and Radeon RX 400 series or newer graphics cards. The move is similar to what Nvidia pulled for pre-Windows 10 and also with its legacy 700 series Kepler GPUs.

Graphics cards pricing beginning to decline - tech
(hx) 06:14 PM CEST - Jun,21 2021 - Post a comment / read (32)
In their regular updates on the GPU market situation in Europe, 3DCenter now reports on a major reduction of GeForce RTX graphics card pricing and better availability. While AMD graphics cards see neither a price reduction nor better availability month-to-month, there is a major shift in GeForce RTX pricing, according to 3DCenter’s report. On average GeForce RTX graphics cards are still 91% more expensive than MSRP, but that’s already a 113% difference month to month when GeForce cards pricing has skyrocketed to 304%. Last month NVIDIA has reduced the shipment of GPUs significantly as the company was shifting its production to the Lite Hash Rate series, this has led to a large backlog of orders, which are now progressively being reduced as LHR models being to ship to customers. GPU pricing is not expected to drop as quickly as it rose in May, mainly because retailers have ordered the cards at higher prices and now they are reluctant to sell at a loss. However, at some point distributors will lower their pricing (which is way above MSRP) will which then allows retailers to offer discounts and still make a profit. An introduction of GeForce RTX 30 Ti and RTX 30 LHR series in combination with the recent ban on cryptomining in China has been contributed to the price drop. Meanwhile, AMD have not released any desktop graphics cards in the last two months, but they have added the mobile RX 6000M series to their lineup which are too based on RDNA2 GPUs.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600G APU Review & Benchmarks: $260 CPU + GPU - tech
(hx) 01:39 PM CEST - Jun,20 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps over at Gamers Nexus bought the AMD R5 5600G APU for testing. This solution compares most directly to the Intel i3-10100 and GT 1030 combination, which combined (at time of publishing) come out to about the same price as an AMD R5 5600G's MSRP for when it officially launches to the DIY market on August 5th. Of course, the alternative to a CPU + GPU (cheap) combination is the APU, but the APU can also be coupled with a dGPU later, if you happen to get one, and so they have tested the R5 5600G with GPUs to determine the maximum capabilities of the CPU when compared to the Intel i5-10700K, i9-10900K, AMD R5 5600X, R7 5700X, and R5 3600, among others.

Microsoft confirms blurry taskbar bug in Windows 10's latest update - tech
(hx) 07:05 PM CEST - Jun,15 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
What is at issue here is an apparent bug in the 'news and interests' widget that Microsoft has begun pushing out to Windows 10 PCs. By default, this shows the weather in your particular region, and if you hover the mouse cursor over the widget (or click or tap it), it brings up news headlines, stock quotes, sports scores, traffic information, and other stuff (which you can personalize). That is all fine and dandy, but it is blurry compared to the rest of the taskbar.

Earlier this month, Microsoft published June 2021 security patch for Windows 10 version 21H1, version 20H2, and version 2004. KB5003637 is a security and mandatory update intended to patch the security bugs reported in the operating system and issues caused by the previous update, including the long-running memory leak bug. Based on the various posts we’ve seen across our own forum and social media sites, Windows 10’s taskbar bug appears to be a growing issue, particularly affecting devices where the "News and Interests" feed has been turned off using Group Policy or taskbar context menu.. Comments on the blurry taskbar icon problem are also available on the Feedback Hub, with various users explaining how their taskbar stopped working properly after they deployed the mandatory security update. In an update to the support document, Microsoft has finally acknowledged the reports, with the company stating that the blurry taskbar bug affects "certain display configurations" only. No specifics were provided and it’s unclear how many users are affected worldwide. "After installing KB5001391 or later updates, the news and interests button in the Windows taskbar might have blurry text on certain display configurations," the company stated in the updated documentation, and promised that the fix will be provided in an "upcoming release". Contrary to what Microsoft says, I’ve observed the blurry text bug across the taskbar/system tray icons and it’s not limited to the weather icon (News and Interests button).

To fix blurry icons or texts bug on your taskbar after applying June 2021 update Right-click on the taskbar, select News and interests and click Turn off. If it’s already disabled and you still have the issue, enable it to see if that fixes your problem. You can also use the "show icon only" mode of News and Interests.

Samsung Galaxy S22 - Apple Should Be Worried - tech

The Samsung Galaxy S22 won't arrive into next year, but leaks about Samsung's next flagship are already starting to appear. Potential upgrades include a possible under-display camera, a thinner design and even better 8K video recording. That's good news. As good as the Galaxy S21 is - especially the cameras on the Galaxy S21 Ultra - there’s definitely room for improvement. This is especially true because the Galaxy S22 will be competing with the iPhone 13 by the time Samsung releases this device. And with Samsung reportedly planning to skip the Galaxy Note 21's release this year, the pressure will be on the Galaxy S21 to deliver another premium flagship experience.

Windows 11 might be the next major Windows version - tech
(hx) 09:46 PM CEST - Jun,04 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Microsoft is slated to hold an event to unveil what is next for Windows (and not Windows 10 per se) on June 24. The Redmond giant’s executives have been dropping hints about the “next generation of Windows” since earlier this year, with the latest being the firm’s CEO himself. While there has been speculation about the possibility of Windows 11 being the successor to Windows 10, there hasn’t been much in the way of leaks to corroborate that theory. That changes now, thanks to prolific leaker Evan Blass who mentioned the “Windows 11” name for a “forthcoming Microsoft OS” on Twitter. The company is known to be working on a visual refresh of the OS – codenamed Sun Valley – which aims to modernize the UI and bring over some of the features that were expected to ship with Windows 10X – an OS that might not see the light of the day. Additionally, it is also rumored to be introducing new Microsoft Store policies which will help widen the reach of the store when it comes to the types of apps that can be offered through it. With the event still a few weeks away, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more information leak out, providing a clearer picture of the company’s plans for Windows. Microsoft will steam the virtual event live on June 24 at 11AM ET, which you can watch here.

As we can see, the RTX 3080Ti is faster than the RTX 3080 by around 10%, and almost as fast as the RTX 3090! The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080Ti will officially release on June 3rd with an MSRP of $1199. Now whether retailers and AIBs will sell these GPUs at their suggested MSRP remains to be seen.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is based on GA102 GPU with 10240 CUDA cores, this is a cosmetic reduction from 10496 cores on RTX 3090. The RTX 3090 will still remain the fastest card in the lineup, but thanks to a relatively small difference in clock speeds and identical TDP of 350W, the RTX 3080 Ti is to offer very similar performance. The RTX 3080 Ti is here to compete with RTX 3090 though, but rather offer a new option for those who were not able to buy RTX 3080. A higher memory capacity of 12GB GDDR6X and a wider bus, will provide a visible bandwidth increase. NVIDIA believes that this will help both gamers and creators alike. NVIDIA announced that RTX 3080 Ti will cost 1199 USD, a 500 USD increase over RTX 3080 while offering 18% more cores and 20% more memory. NVIDIA also announced RTX 3070 Ti which is based on full GA104 GPU with 6144 CUDA cores. This SKU will also get GDDR6X memory, but the capacity will remain the same as RTX 3070’s, which is 8GB. This model will cost 599 USD. The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be available on June 3 starting at $1,199, with the RTX 3070 Ti available on June 10 starting at $599. Both GPUs will be available for purchase as custom boards—including stock-clocked and factory-overclocked models—from leading add-in card providers, including ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galax, GIGABYTE, Inno3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, Zotac and other regional providers around the world. Limited-edition NVIDIA Founders Edition boards will also be available. Look for GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPUs at major retailers and etailers, as well as in gaming systems from major manufacturers and leading system builders worldwide.

Could these be Intel’s first 10nm desktop processors? It seems that Intel’s ark has been updated with yet unseen SKUs. Intel Core i9-11900KB appeared alongside other non-K (unlocked) variants, but they all share the same “B” moniker. According to Intel Ark, those processors are based on Tiger Lake and they indeed have 10nm architecture. Technically those would be the first 10nm desktop CPUs from Intel.
