Intel's upcoming Core i7-12700 (non-K) processor matches AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X in the Geekbench 5 benchmark. The i7-12700 is a locked 65 W TDP processor with 8 "Golden Cove" P-cores, and 4 "Gracemont" E-cores. 4 fewer E-cores, lower clocks, and lack of features such as Thermal Velocity Boost, is what differentiates the 12th Gen Core i7 from 12th Gen Core i9. The Core i7-12700 allegedly scored 1595 points single-thread, along with 10170 points in the multi-threaded test. This puts it within 5% of the Ryzen 7 5800X in the single-threaded test (averaged from the Geekbench database), and within 2% in the multi-threaded. One has to consider that the i7-12700 lacks an unlocked multiplier, but should Intel 600-series chipset motherboards come with the same power-limit unlocks as the 400-series and 500-series; more performance can be squeezed out.

Videocardz has shared some new details about Intel’s upcoming AI-upscaling tech that will be a direct rival to NVIDIA’s DLSS tech. Intel’s upcoming GPUs will support this new tech and it will most likely be better than AMD’s FSR. Intel has already stated that its upcoming super sampling tech will be artificial intelligence-driven. And, according to some leaked slides, this will be a “temporal-based upscaling technology that will account for motion vectors (velocity) and the history of previous frames“. In other words, it will be closer to what NVIDIA DLSS does and not as generic as AMD’s FSR.
Intel XSS will be powered by DP4a and XMX instructions which are present in either already-released DG1 GPUs (Xe-LP) or the upcoming Intel Xe-HPG series (DG2). The XMX Matrix Engines are the building block of AI acceleration on next-generation Arc “Alchemist” GPUs. Each DG2 chip will feature 16 Matrix Engines and 16 Vector Engines Intel discloses that frame render time will be higher than traditional upscaling methods, but it will also be significantly lower than rending native 4K images. Those values are not tied to any numbers, it is just a conceptual diagram. Intel XeSS is temporal-based upscaling technology that will account for motion vectors (velocity) and the history of previous frames. This data will be processed by XeSS XMX instructions before they reach postprocessing.

Fractal's Torrent case is among the best tower cases we've reviewed anytime recently, competing most directly with the Corsair 7000D, Fractal's own Meshify 2 XL, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, the P500A, and maybe Cooler Master's H500 series. The Torrent most closely resembles the old Silverstone Raven RV-02, which is one of our favorite cases of all time. The Torrent does well to follow this up, and is most unique for its huge 180mm fans and full accompaniment of 140mm fans. We're hoping to do a PC build in the Fractal Torrent sometime soon as well, since we actually like it enough to use for a production build for GN.

Google has officially unveiled its next mid-range phone, the Pixel 5a. The big news today (and always the main selling point of the Pixel A-series) is the price, which is $449, or $100 more than the Pixel 4a. Google's blog post has a phone comparison sheet. Part of the reason for the price increase is that the Pixel 5a is a bigger phone, with a 6.34-inch display and 73.7 mm width compared to the Pixel 4a's 5.8-inch display and 69.4 mm width. Another big change is the addition of IP67 dust and water resistance, which means the phone should survive submersion in 3 feet of water (1 meter) for 30 minutes. Like the Pixel 5, the body is metal coated in plastic instead of the pure plastic body of the Pixel 4a.


As usual, we're getting a no-frills design that just takes care of the basics. On the front, there's a slim-bezel OLED display and a hole-punch camera in the top right, while on the back there are two cameras (main and wide-angle) and a capacitive fingerprint reader. Specs include a Snapdragon 765G (that's a 7nm chip with two Cortex A76 cores and six Cortex A55 cores), 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and the biggest battery of any Pixel: 4680 mAh. The main camera is 12.2 MP and looks like the same Sony IMX363 sensor that Google has used for the past four years. There's a 16 MP wide-angle and an 8 MP front camera. Oh yeah, the headphone jack is sticking around for at least one more year. If there's a disappointment with the Pixel 5a, it's the 60 Hz display, which is looking pretty slow in a world where 90 Hz and 120 Hz are often the norm. We're not talking about high-end phones, either. OnePlus sells a 90 Hz phone in the US for $180, while the Galaxy A52 5G has a 120 Hz display and costs $500 in the US.

NVIDIA has today decided to update the company's game-ready graphics drivers with the release of 471.68 WHQL. In the latest installment of the GeForce drivers, NVIDIA is bringing some much-needed support for the latest games. That includes the launch of Psychonauts 2, Naraka: Bladepoint, and Back 4 Blood Open Beta. These new games are now supported and are expected to be played on all GPUs from 3000 series to the older 500 series. As Naraka: Bladepoint game features NVIDIA's latest DLSS and Reflex technologies, this driver version is here to support it. Alongside game support, the new driver also adds support for seven new G-SYNC displays listed below. For a full list of changes, including bug fixes, please see the aforementioned list.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.8.1 Drivers - tech

AMD today released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin. Version 21.8.1 Beta comes with support for the Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card (which we reviewed here). It also fixes an issue with "The Medium" that caused the game to crash while running FrameView. The company also identified a handful issues, some even specific to the RX 6600 XT, such as inaccurate point-lights in "Control," and driver timeouts observed in "Horizon Zero Dawn" with RX 6700 XT, and less specifically on RX 500 series products with simultaneous gaming+streaming.

Microsoft Unveils Pricing for Cloud Streaming Windows 365 Service - tech

Microsoft has recently launched their Windows 365 cloud streaming service that allows businesses to stream a Windows 10 or 11 machine over the internet. The Windows 365 service will initially be available in 12 different tiers with the cheapest offering 1 virtual core, 2 GB RAM, and 64 GB storage for 24 USD/month while the most expensive option at 162 USD/month includes 8 virtual cores, 32 GB RAM, and 512 GB storage. Microsoft is also offering up to a 16% monthly discount to businesses that already use Windows 10 Pro on their devices. These machines are not intended to be used for network heavy applications like server hosting and Microsoft has implemented strong outbound data limits. The Windows 365 cloud PC can be accessed from any device with the Microsoft Remote Desktop app or a HTML5 compatible browser.

Notebookcheck received their first review sample of the latest Dell XPS 9510 laptop featuring Intel Core i7-11800H processor alongside NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. While the new XPS series was never known for good GPU performance, the latest 15-inch model from Dell appears to offer the worst RTX 3050 Ti implementation so far tested by the media. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU is based on GA107 GPU with 2560 CUDA cores and 4GB GDDR6 memory. Officially, the TGP (Total Graphics Power) range for this SKU is 35 to 80W. NVIDIA has forced notebook makers to display TGP and clock information alongside each implementation of their RTX 30 Laptop GPU to prevent misleading marketing that led customers to buy much slower GPUs than intended. In this case, the official TGP for RTX 3050 Ti in XPS 9510 is 45W, but as proven by the Notebook check, this value has little to do with reality. Dell XPS 9510 already offers one of the slowest implementations of RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU with an official TGP of 45W, however, this value appears to be lowered almost instantly to 35W in gaming, resulting in nearly 20% loss in performance. The performance of RTX 3050 Ti in Dell XPS 9510 is so bad, that the laptop is actually out-classed by Dell’s own XPS 9500 equipped with GTX 1650 Ti GPU in games such as Witcher 3. The performance is not improved by enabling Dell’s Ultra Performance profile through its ‘Power Manager’ software either.

AMD today released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin drivers. Version 21.7.2 beta introduces optimization for "Chernobylite." It also adds support for two new Vulkan API extensions, including "VK_KHR_copy_commands2," and "VK_EXT_extended_dynamic_state2." Among the handful issues fixed include incorrect upgrade advice by the Game Compatibility advisor over certain CPUs and GPUs; a BSOD error noticed on certain mobile platforms when using Enhanced sign-in; "Resident Evil Village" experiencing application hang or driver crash on machines with Radeon VII; and an application crash with Radeon Software when upgrading with core isolation enabled.

A thread on Reddit has reports from gamers who have found their RTX 3090 graphics cards bricked after playing the closed beta of New World, Amazon's upcoming MMORPG. Sorting through them it seems the problem may primarily affect EVGA 3090s.

I just bricked a 3090 in the main menu after setting my graphics quality to medium and hitting save. Cant believe it. Anyone else had a catastrophic failure like this? I've been playing cyberpunk 3090 on Ultra for months, so this really doesn't make sense.

Well. Think this just happened to me. Display went out while in queue. Now I can’t get the display to come back on. But GPU fans run on max when I power on my PC for some reason.

Edit 2: welp, starting the RMA process. I have a red light over the 4-pin which after some googling seems to suggest I need to RMA. This actually needs more visibility. I honestly read these posts about people having “bricked” cards before playing and blew it off as them having some other issue. Count me in as a total believer now.

Encountered same issue, EVGA 3090 FTW with power supply of over 1000w, I guess this is not a game issue, the cards were just bad and waiting for the right conditions to fail.

NVIDIA today released the latest version of GeForce Game Ready drivers. Version 471.41 WHQL comes with support for Windows 11, including a WDDM 3.0 compliant display driver, making it NVIDIA's first official driver for the upcoming operating system. In addition, the drivers introduce DLSS performance enhancement on Red Dead Redemption 2 and Chernobylite. The drivers also introduce CUDA 11.4 support. Among the issues fixed are lack of hardware acceleration on Capture One; HUD loss issues on Valorant; a game freeze noticed with DOOM Eternal; League of Legends failing to launch; mouse pointer issues with certain DSC monitors in HDR mode; blurry Ansel depth-of-field in certain games; display resolution being limited to 640x480 on some monitors after updating from older drivers; distorted HDMI audio playback on 8K displays connected via HDMi 2.1, and HDMI audio drop-outs on LG C9 OLED TVs.

In related news, looks like that Windows 10 will officially support DirectStorage after all.
Microsoft is committed to ensuring that when game developers adopt a new API, they can reach as many gamers as possible. As such, games built against the DirectStorage SDK will be compatible with Windows 10, version 1909 and up; the same as the DirectX 12 Agility SDK.
