AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.9.2 Drivers - tech
(hx) 11:04 PM CEST - Sep,21 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD today released the latest version of their Radeon Software Adrenalin drivers, guaranteeing the best possible experience for AMD GPU users. The latest driver revision introduces support for World War Z: Aftermath, and Amazon's New World MMORPG. Besides that initial game release support, the drivers also deliver an up to 13% performance improvement in Diablo II: Resurrected. This performance increase seems to solve a rendering bottleneck experienced with the RX 6700 XT graphics card at 4K resolution, with Very High settings enabled. AMD also fixed four outstanding issues with this driver release. The CPU Additional Metrics section within the Performance tab should now show up for all users; compatibility error messages when trying to load a previously saved tuning profile should no longer appear; water should no longer spontaneously evaporate in Hitman III for RX 6000 series users; CPU Auto Overclock in Radeon Software should no longer be absent for users sporting an AMD 5000 series CPU alongside an RX 6000 series graphics card. Check after the break for the list of outstanding issues;

The Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.9.2 optional driver can now be downloaded via the Radeon Settings app on Windows or the links on the official release notes page. Official support for Windows 11 (including early builds) landed with the 21.9.1 driver last week, which means this latest release is fully supported for Microsoft's latest operating system as well.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.9.1 - tech
(hx) 12:38 AM CEST - Sep,16 2021 - Post a comment
AMD has released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin. Version 21.9.1 is feature-packed with stuff enthusiasts are bound to love. To begin with, it introduces Smart Access Memory (PCI Resizable BAR) support for AMD Radeon RX 5000 series (RDNA) graphics processors, when used with a compatible platform. Next up, it adds optimization for "Call of Duty Vanguard Open Beta," and "Deathloop." The drivers also add a handful Vulkan API extensions, including VK_KHR_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory, VK_KHR_shader_integer_dot_product, VK_EXT_shader_atomic_float2, and VK_EXT_load_store_op_none. Perhaps the biggest new feature addition is AMD Auto Overclock.

On machines with AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors and Radeon RX 6000 series graphics, the Auto-Overclock feature detects CPU load, and automatically overclocks it in increments of 50 MHz, beyond the processor's rated maximum boost frequency. Just like manual overclocking, this comes with sizable costs to power consumption and cooling. The feature also automatically overclocks your RX 6000 series GPU. Using the feature is as easy as pulling up the Tuning tab in Radeon Software, and clicking on "Auto Overclock" in the Tuning Control tab. Lastly, Adrenalin 21.9.1 adds support for the upcoming Windows 11 operating system. The software is released alongside AMD's latest 3.09.01.140 Chipset Software, which also add Windows 11 support.

iPhone 13 Upgrades Cameras, Displays - tech
(hx) 12:02 AM CEST - Sep,15 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Apple today announced the iPhone 13 series. All models feature improved battery life, display, cameras, and processor. Although the model options and designs are similar to the iPhone 12 series, the notch for the TrueDepth camera system that powers Face ID is now 20% smaller, allowing more usable display area. The OLED displays on all models are now more efficient and offer greater peak brightness outdoors, while supporting HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The Pro models gain adaptive refresh of 10–120 Hz. The cameras have been updated to let in much more light for better performance, especially in low light. The main camera features a f/1.6 aperture on the standard models and f/1.5 on the Pro models. Apple has also brought sensor-shift OIS to the standard models, a feature previously exclusive to the Pro Max. On the Pro models, the telephoto camera has been bumped from 2x to 3x, for 6x total optical zoom range. The Pro models also feature an all-new ultra-wide camera with an unprecedented f/1.8 aperture as well as true auto-focus, enabling a new macro mode. All three cameras now support night mode. A new Cinematic Mode in the camera app can automatically change focus based on who is looking where in the scene, and lets the user adjust focus in videos after they have been shot. A new Photographic Styles feature offers greater control over Apple's advanced multi-frame image processing. The Pro models can also now shoot and edit Apple ProRes video at 4K (30 fps). The new A15 Bionic chip powers all four models. Apple claims it's 50% faster than the best competing chip. The A15 variant in the Pro models is slightly more powerful with five GPU cores instead of four. Improved efficiency and larger batteries give the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 Pro 1.5 hours more of battery life, while the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max gain 2.5 hours of battery life. iPhone 13 and 13 mini will be available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED in a new entry-level capacity of 128 GB (double last year's starting option), as well as 256 or 512 GB. The standard-size iPhone 13 starts at $799 while the mini starts at $699. iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will be available in graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue in 128, 256, or 512 GB, plus a new 1 TB option. The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 while the Pro Max starts at $1,099. Customers will be able to pre-order all four iPhone 13 models this Friday, with full availability September 24th.

Microsoft will officially release Windows 11 on October 5th - tech
(hx) 05:19 PM CEST - Aug,31 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft officially announced Windows 11 back in June and since then the company has delivered multiple Windows 11 updates to Windows Insiders. After a couple of months of testing, Microsoft has confirmed the Windows 11 release date. In a blog post today, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will start shipping to new and existing PCs on October 5. Unfortunately, the company also confirmed that Windows 11 will not come with Android app support at launch. Microsoft has further confirmed that Windows 11 will roll out to users in phases meaning not everyone will get the update on October 5. The company will roll the update out to "new eligible devices" first and will use intelligent models to decide the roll the update out to other devices. Microsoft is eying mid-2022 to complete the Windows 11 roll out to all the eligible devices.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER with 10752 CUDA cores? - tech
(hx) 10:47 PM CEST - Aug,30 2021 - Post a comment
While many gamers still struggle to find GeForce RTX 30 based on Ampere architecture at a reasonable price, NVIDIA is allegedly already working on updated models called SUPER. NVIDIA is now expected to release its RTX 30 SUPER series by the end of this year, Greymon55 hints on Twitter. While it is unclear whether we will see a full lineup refresh, the RTX 3090 SUPER is allegedly coming. The part would feature full GA102 silicon with 10752 CUDA cores and even faster memory. At this point, one would wonder why NVIDIA won’t just release a next-gen TITAN, but NVIDIA might be struggling to put more memory on the GA102 models. This is why RTX Workstation models are based on GDDR6 memory instead. Furthermore, Greymon55 hints that RTX 3090 SUPER might have a TDP above 400W, which is at least 50W more than the existing model. It was previously rumored that NVIDIA might launch a new GA103 GPU for its RTX 3080 SUPER refresh as well as new high-end mobile parts. This GPU alongside the updated RTX 3090 SUPER might provide some performance uplift, but it shouldn’t be much faster than the existing RTX 3090 model which features only 256 CUDA cores fewer.

Intel Core i7-12700 Geekbenched, Matches Ryzen 7 5800X - tech
(hxx) 03:23 PM CEST - Aug,25 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel's upcoming Core i7-12700 (non-K) processor matches AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X in the Geekbench 5 benchmark. The i7-12700 is a locked 65 W TDP processor with 8 "Golden Cove" P-cores, and 4 "Gracemont" E-cores. 4 fewer E-cores, lower clocks, and lack of features such as Thermal Velocity Boost, is what differentiates the 12th Gen Core i7 from 12th Gen Core i9. The Core i7-12700 allegedly scored 1595 points single-thread, along with 10170 points in the multi-threaded test. This puts it within 5% of the Ryzen 7 5800X in the single-threaded test (averaged from the Geekbench database), and within 2% in the multi-threaded. One has to consider that the i7-12700 lacks an unlocked multiplier, but should Intel 600-series chipset motherboards come with the same power-limit unlocks as the 400-series and 500-series; more performance can be squeezed out.

Intel discloses details on its first discrete gaming series - tech
(hx) 07:15 PM CEST - Aug,19 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
Videocardz has shared some new details about Intel’s upcoming AI-upscaling tech that will be a direct rival to NVIDIA’s DLSS tech. Intel’s upcoming GPUs will support this new tech and it will most likely be better than AMD’s FSR. Intel has already stated that its upcoming super sampling tech will be artificial intelligence-driven. And, according to some leaked slides, this will be a “temporal-based upscaling technology that will account for motion vectors (velocity) and the history of previous frames“. In other words, it will be closer to what NVIDIA DLSS does and not as generic as AMD’s FSR.
Intel XSS will be powered by DP4a and XMX instructions which are present in either already-released DG1 GPUs (Xe-LP) or the upcoming Intel Xe-HPG series (DG2). The XMX Matrix Engines are the building block of AI acceleration on next-generation Arc “Alchemist” GPUs. Each DG2 chip will feature 16 Matrix Engines and 16 Vector Engines Intel discloses that frame render time will be higher than traditional upscaling methods, but it will also be significantly lower than rending native 4K images. Those values are not tied to any numbers, it is just a conceptual diagram. Intel XeSS is temporal-based upscaling technology that will account for motion vectors (velocity) and the history of previous frames. This data will be processed by XeSS XMX instructions before they reach postprocessing.

Best Case of 2021 So Far: Fractal Torrent Case Review & Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 08:39 PM CEST - Aug,18 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
Fractal's Torrent case is among the best tower cases we've reviewed anytime recently, competing most directly with the Corsair 7000D, Fractal's own Meshify 2 XL, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, the P500A, and maybe Cooler Master's H500 series. The Torrent most closely resembles the old Silverstone Raven RV-02, which is one of our favorite cases of all time. The Torrent does well to follow this up, and is most unique for its huge 180mm fans and full accompaniment of 140mm fans. We're hoping to do a PC build in the Fractal Torrent sometime soon as well, since we actually like it enough to use for a production build for GN.

The Google Pixel 5a is $449, adds a bigger screen and water resistance - tech
(d@rkfu) 08:30 PM CEST - Aug,17 2021 - Post a comment / read (3)
Google has officially unveiled its next mid-range phone, the Pixel 5a. The big news today (and always the main selling point of the Pixel A-series) is the price, which is $449, or $100 more than the Pixel 4a. Google's blog post has a phone comparison sheet. Part of the reason for the price increase is that the Pixel 5a is a bigger phone, with a 6.34-inch display and 73.7 mm width compared to the Pixel 4a's 5.8-inch display and 69.4 mm width. Another big change is the addition of IP67 dust and water resistance, which means the phone should survive submersion in 3 feet of water (1 meter) for 30 minutes. Like the Pixel 5, the body is metal coated in plastic instead of the pure plastic body of the Pixel 4a.

As usual, we're getting a no-frills design that just takes care of the basics. On the front, there's a slim-bezel OLED display and a hole-punch camera in the top right, while on the back there are two cameras (main and wide-angle) and a capacitive fingerprint reader. Specs include a Snapdragon 765G (that's a 7nm chip with two Cortex A76 cores and six Cortex A55 cores), 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and the biggest battery of any Pixel: 4680 mAh. The main camera is 12.2 MP and looks like the same Sony IMX363 sensor that Google has used for the past four years. There's a 16 MP wide-angle and an 8 MP front camera. Oh yeah, the headphone jack is sticking around for at least one more year. If there's a disappointment with the Pixel 5a, it's the 60 Hz display, which is looking pretty slow in a world where 90 Hz and 120 Hz are often the norm. We're not talking about high-end phones, either. OnePlus sells a 90 Hz phone in the US for $180, while the Galaxy A52 5G has a 120 Hz display and costs $500 in the US.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.8.1 Drivers - tech
(hx) 04:59 PM CEST - Aug,10 2021 - Post a comment
AMD today released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin. Version 21.8.1 Beta comes with support for the Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card (which we reviewed here). It also fixes an issue with "The Medium" that caused the game to crash while running FrameView. The company also identified a handful issues, some even specific to the RX 6600 XT, such as inaccurate point-lights in "Control," and driver timeouts observed in "Horizon Zero Dawn" with RX 6700 XT, and less specifically on RX 500 series products with simultaneous gaming+streaming.

Support For
  • AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT Graphics
Fixed Issues
  • The Medium may crash after launching the game while running FrameView.
Known Issues
  • Upgrading to the latest Radeon graphics driver may cause the auto update feature on Ryzen Master to stop working. A temporary workaround is to manually update Ryzen Master.
