Intel i3-12100 Beats AMD Ryzen 3600 - tech
(hx) 10:58 PM CET - Jan,12 2022 - Post a comment / read (5)
Well, following the release of the first independent benchmark figures, it seems that this exceptionally price-friendly model is going to give AMD some stiff competition as following a report via TechSpot, it seemingly outperforms the AMD Ryzen 3600 in gaming by a margin of around 7-8%. The Intel i3-12100 is expected to retail for a price in the region of £125-£150. Compared to the circa £250 price tag of the 3600, therefore, while seemingly beating it in gaming performance, Intel also has the huge advantage here of being, roughly speaking, a whopping £100 less expensive.

NVIDIA announces GeForce RTX 3090Ti and RTX 3050 - tech
(hx) 09:35 AM CET - Jan,05 2022 - Post a comment / read (3)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti ships with 10752 CUDA cores and 24GB GDDR6X memory. It is NVIDIA’s first model to feature 21 Gbps 16Gb modules, which is part is the reason why this card has a higher TDP of 450W, over 100W more than the RTX 3090 model. It is also the first GPU to utilize a 16-pin power connector, which will hopefully become a standard that will replace standard 8-pin power connectors. The new flagship GPU has a boost clock of 1860 MHz unlocking nearly 40 TFLOPs of single-precision compute power, a compute performance not available to any NVIDIA Ampere GPU yet. NVIDIA was not ready to share the specs of this new card just yet, but promises to reveal more details later this month. NVIDIA is also launching its entry-level RTX 3050 GPU with 9 TFLOPS of single-precision compute power. This model is based on GA106-150 GPU with 2560 CUDA cores. It is equipped with 8GB GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit memory bus. NVIDIA announced that RTX 3050 will become available on January 27th with a suggested retail price of 249 USD. As with the previous entry level NVIDIA RTX 30-series card, the RTX 3050 does not come with a Founder's Edition model and will have to be purchased with one of NVIDIA's partners instead. While the RTX 3050 is set to become available for purchase on January 27th, high demand and the ongoing semiconductor shortages, are likely to make it extremely difficult to obtain one of these graphics cards. While NVIDIA is touting the RTX 3050 has an MSRP of $249 USD, given the high demand it may very well be even more difficult to obtain the RTX 3050 at those prices.

Amazon Alexa asked a 10-year old to perform a shocking TikTok challenge - tech
(hx) 09:40 PM CET - Dec,28 2021 - Post a comment / read (4)
If you are somewhat acquainted with TikTok and other social media platforms, you are probably aware of certain trendy (and often weird) challenges that go viral as they are performed and filmed by millions of users. One such dangerous act was the "outlet challenge" that broke out last year. In this, a person needed to plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, and then touch a penny to the exposed prongs Unfortunately, Amazon's Alexa picked it up while scouring the web and proposed this challenge to a 10-year-old kid, writes the child's mother, Kristin Livdahk, on Twitter. Alexa said: "Here’s something I found on the web. According to ourcommunitynow.com: The challenge is simple: plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs"

The issue has now been fixed according to a statement the company offered to media outlet indy100:
Customer trust is at the center of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide accurate, relevant, and helpful information to customers. As soon as we became aware of this error, we took swift action to fix it.
However, incidents like these demonstrate the potential dangers of what non-curated aggregation of internet information can mean to users. Thankfully the child's parent was present close by or else the situation could have turned ugly.

NVIDIA Pushes RTX 3070 Ti 16GB and RTX 3080 12GB Launches - tech
(hx) 12:30 PM CET - Dec,14 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
NVIDIA has reportedly pushed midlife refreshes to its GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics card family to beyond January, according to a report by Igor's Lab. The company was supposed to launch as many as three high-end graphics card SKUs in early-Q1, which include a 16 GB variant of the RTX 3070 Ti, which maxes out the GA104 silicon, a refreshed RTX 3080 12 GB variant, which keeps the CUDA core count of the original RTX 3080, but maxes out the 384-bit memory bus width of the GA102; and the RTX 3090 Ti, which maxes out both memory and CUDA cores on the GA102. It's being reported that while the RTX 3090 Ti launch is on schedule, with announcements slated for NVIDIA's 2022 International CES presentation; the RTX 3070 Ti 16 GB and RTX 3080 12 GB could be launched only after the Chinese New Year (at least mid-February). The three SKUs, we predict, are designed to calibrate NVIDIA's lineup against a possible refresh of AMD's RDNA2 graphics architecture on the TSMC N6 (6 nm) node, which could allow the company to dial up engine clocks across the board, along with faster 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory, to better compete against the RTX 30-series. AMD is expected to announce these 6 nm GPUs in its CES presentation.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti to launch on January 27th - tech
(hx) 10:28 AM CET - Dec,11 2021 - Post a comment
The embargoed document listing RTX 3090 Ti launch date is so fresh that it does not even have an announcement date listed. NVIDIA releases embargo dates to its board partners in advance. Those documents include all dates that apply to the upcoming product, such as ‘product announcement’, ‘review sample seeding’, ‘reviews’ or ‘on-shelf’ date. The first official RTX 3090 Ti document from NVIDIA only lists the on-shelf dates, which is January 27th. Furthermore, we have also learned that on December 17th, NVIDIA will be announcing its RTX 3070 Ti 16GB graphics card. This card will be released next year, on January 11th to be exact. It is said that the card will feature ‘the same’ CUDA core count as the 8GB model and the same clock speeds. In this case, it means full GA104 GPU (GA104-401 to be precise) with 6144 cores. Board partners do not expect this card to be faster than the 8GB model. With the RTX 3050 coming on the same day as RTX 3090 Ti, we now have a full list of desktop GPUs that should be *available* in January 2022.

GeForce RTX 3050 rumored to be faster than GTX 1660 SUPER - tech
(hx) 12:24 AM CET - Nov,29 2021 - Post a comment / read (2)
The chaps over at Videocardz.com have learned some new details on the upcoming RTX 3050 series. The new information comes from the same source that told them about RTX 2060 12GB weeks in advance before any such rumors appeared elsewhere.
A graphics card which is internally referred to as PG190 SKU 70 will feature GA106-150 GPU. It was indeed rumored to be RTX 3050 Ti, but our source now believes it is actually the non-Ti model. We were also told that it might feature 8GB memory, but we couldn’t verify this claim with other sources, which is why it is marked as ‘to be confirmed’ in the charts below.

As we were told, the GeForce RTX 3050 is to have higher performance than GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER, but still lower than RTX 2060 12GB, which is launching next month. What this means is that the card will not compete with Radeon RX 6600 series, but rather the rumored RX 6500XT which is to launch in the first quarter of 2022. Additionally, we also have Intel Arc A128 (rumored SKU name) coming a bit later.

The RTX 3050 isn’t the only new card on internal roadmaps, NVIDIA is also planning RTX 3090 Ti, RTX 3080 12GB, and RTX 3070 Ti 16GB models, all expected to launch early next year. The chart also lists board and SKU numbers (some of them were never published before), which should help you keep track of all these new cards

This $5000 Graphics Card Can't Game - tech
(hx) 05:20 PM CET - Nov,25 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Linus Tech Tips got a chance to test a CMP 170HX, a high-end cryptomining card from NVIDIA. In fact, unlike other CMP HX models, this card was actually manufactured by NVIDIA themselves. It's a headless graphics card with a large copper heatsink enclosed in a large aluminum shroud. The card does not have any fans, as it relies on server chassis cooling. The card is equipped with GA100-105F GPU, which is a cut-down version of the processor used by NVIDIA A100 SXM or PCIe data-center accelerators.

The video from Linus Sebastian confirms that the card is not recognized by any software out of the box, in fact, there aren't even any public drivers available for this SKU. The resale value of this card is actually not very high considering it does not work with anything other than mining. As an example, despite listing CUDA capability, it is not even capable of rendering with CUDA kernel in Blender. Furthermore, any gaming API support has been removed, so no Vulkan or DirectX API support for potential cloud or virtual machine gaming either.

The CMP 170HX GA100 GPU is equipped with 4480 CUDA cores and 8GB HBM2e memory - a significant downgrade compared to A100 which features 6912 cores and up to 80GB memory. The CMP model obviously does not require such a large memory buffer, because the current DAG file for Ehtereum mining is still under 5GB. And speaking of mining, the card does not have many tunning options available, but users can still adjust the power limit, which visibly improves efficiency from 250W to 200W almost with the same hash rate (~165 MH/s for Ethereum).

Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine - free - tech
(hx) 11:59 AM CET - Nov,23 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has made no fanfare about it, but the company has made available a virtual machine based on Windows 11 Enterprise that developers -- or anyone else -- can install and use free of charge. A few days ago, Microsoft updated a page in the Windows Dev Center to include download links for Windows 11 VMs for VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels. The development environments have been designed to help users "start building Windows applications quickly" but they could be put to other uses instead.

Although Microsoft has updated the virtual machine so it is now based on Windows 11, the page title still refers to the previous version of the operating system. On the page entitled "Get a Windows 10 development environment", four separate VMs are available, each weighing in at around 20GB.

Microsoft shares details of what is included in the virtual machines, which are due to expire on 01/09/22 (although it is possible that this date will be extended when the page is fully updated):

Window 11 Enterprise (evaluation)
Windows 10 SDK, version 2004 (10.0.19041.0)
Visual Studio 2019 (latest as of 10/09/21) with the UWP, .NET desktop, and Azure workflows enabled and also includes the Windows Template Studio extension
Visual Studio Code (latest as of 10/09/21)
Windows Subsystem for Linux enabled with Ubuntu installed
Developer mode enabled
Windows Terminal installed

You can download the virtual machines directly from Microsoft here. On the page you will find download links for  VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels versions of the VM.

Known Issues
  • During Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy gameplay, some users may experience driver timeouts on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 5500 XT Graphics. A temporary workaround is to disable the Radeon Anti-Lag feature in Radeon Software.
  • Some users may experience elevated disk space consumption by the Multimedia Athena Dumps folder.
  • Visual artifacts may be observed while playing Call of Duty : Black Ops Cold War on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 6800M Graphics.
  • While playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds with multiple displays connected in extended mode, Radeon Software may become unresponsive when the user is in the lobby and attempts to open Radeon Software on the secondary display via the context menu. A temporary workaround is to press the Alt + R keyboard shortcut if this happens.
  • Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.
  • Radeon performance metrics and logging features may intermittently report extremely high and incorrect memory clock values.
