Samsung allegedly hacked by the same group as NVIDIA - tech
(hx) 05:49 PM CET - Mar,05 2022 - Post a comment
The same hacking group that managed to infiltrate NVIDIA servers 2 weeks ago has now begun leaking Samsung confidential data. The group managed to obtain as much as 1 TB of data from NVIDIA servers and has already released the source code for DLSS technology. After failed ransom and lack of NVIDIA cooperation, the team is now trying to sell the stolen information to 3rd party, including a bypass for cryptocurrency mining hash rate limited. It is not mentioned which Samsung servers did the group target specifically, but they mention the data that has been stolen from Samsung servers.

After publishing a teaser LAPSUS$ provided the following description of the stolen data:

  • source code for every Trusted Applet (TA) installed in Samsung’s TrustZone environment used for sensitive operations (e.g. hardware cryptography, binary encryption, access control)
  • algorithms for all biometric unlock operations
  • bootloader source code for all recent Samsung devices
  • confidential source code from Qualcomm
  • source code for Samsung’s activation servers
  • full source code for technology used for authorizing and authenticating Samsung accounts, including APIs and services

Should this claim turn out to be true, then Samsung suffered from a major data breach that may have serious security consequences for both the company and their partners (such as Qualcomm).

Is Your Galaxy Phone's Performance Being Intentionally Gimped? - tech
(hx) 07:10 PM CET - Mar,04 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
A service found on some of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones might be holding back performance in games and other applications. It's called Game Optimizing Service (GOS) and it appears to be throttling Galaxy phones in more than 10,000 apps. Curiously, it seems to leave benchmarking applications like 3DMark alone. The knee-jerk reaction to that sort of thing is that Samsung could be gaming the benchmark scene so that its phones (like the Galaxy S22 Ultra) perform better in reviews than the competition. This tactic is not unprecedented, and is obviously frowned upon. To be clear, we're not suggesting Samsung is doing that, but everything is on the table at the moment. So what's going on? Most of the claims trace to Samsung's Korean community forums, and were brought to wider light by @GaryeonHan with this Twitter post:

UPDATE: Samsung is readying a software update that will offer users “more control over the performance” of their smartphones. The company has issued a statement that suggests it was intentionally reducing the performance of its mobile phones, presumably to prevent overheating and optimize battery life. Samsung claims the service is only supposed to throttle games, but for reasons yet unknown, GOS was throttling the performance of smartphones even for regular apps. The aforementioned list contains several non-gaming apps such as TikTok, Microsoft Office, Instagram, Netflix, and more. Interestingly, some of Samsung's own apps such as Samsung Cloud and Samsung Pay are on the list too. It is not immediately clear how Samsung will offer “greater control” over their smartphones’ performance. It is possible the company might offer some settings that can be switched on or off. Throttling essentially reduces the performance of the processor. This effectively reduces the heat generated and even improves battery life. It is concerning to note that benchmarking apps such as GeekBench 5 and 3DMark aren't present on the list.

NVIDIA has Allegedly Been Hacked - tech

According to several reports in various media, NVIDIA has been hacked and several key systems, such as email and its internal developer tools have been down for the past few days. According to CRN, NVIDIA is investigating "an incident" and the company issued the following statement to the publication. "Our business and commercial activities continue uninterrupted. We are still working to evaluate the nature and scope of the event and don't have any additional information to share at this time."

According to vx-underground, it's a South American "extortion group" by the name LAPSUS$ that's behind the hack. Based on screenshots provided by vx-underground, NVIDIA has allegedly hacked LAPSUS$ back and encrypted the data that was stolen. Unfortunately for NVIDIA, it seems like LAPSUS$ had backups of the data. The group claims to be sitting on around 1 TB of data from the hack.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CET - Feb,13 2022 - Post a comment / read (15)
Mini Review of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra after using it for a few days! Regardless of whether you call it a Galaxy Note 22 there's a lot to like here and Note fans will be happy! It's not perfect though and some might be better off with the S21 Ultra. The second video compares cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Unfortunately, I'm going to replace my phone this year, which I don't want to do. I've had the HTC Touch black, Samsung Note 1, Samsung Note 3 and now I have the Samsung Note 9. For now, I really don't know if I'll buy a Samsung S22 Ultra (I'm used to the built-in stylus) or an iPhone for the first time in my life. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. What bothers me most about the Note 9 at the moment is probably that I don't have a complete cloud backup of my phone like the iPhone can. Samsung has this all wrong, something is in the Samsung cloud, something is in my Google account and my photos end up in One Drive. For that you have two stores - Google Play and the Galaxy Store. It's just fucked up.

Facebook Threatens to Withdraw its Platform From Europe - tech
(hx) 06:57 PM CET - Feb,07 2022 - Post a comment / read (32)
Facebook has never had a particularly great relationship with its users. In fact, I know many people who are seemingly only one minor aggravating point away from quitting from it entirely. Following a report via via ITWire,, however, it seems that the social media platform may be considering taking that decision for them as an official legal filing by Facebook (well, technically Meta, but I’m never going to call them that!) has cited that the tech giant is considering a complete withdrawal of its platform in Europe. The reasons behind is that a recent ruling by European courts effectively blocked US authorities from having the right to collect personal data from EU citizens without their expressed consent. Why is this a problem? Well, not only does Facebook hold a lot of information about its users, but it also actively looks to collect more of it for the purpose of targeted advertising. You know, that whole business of you casually searching for a new pair of shoes then finding practically every website you visit crammed full of adverts for Ugs, Nike, Adidas, etc. (other shoe brands are available). Put simply, if the EU court doesn’t consider rescinding this action, Facebook is legitimately threatening to terminate its services within the region entirely!

If you want to hear my opinion, it is without any doubt a 100% empty threat. Facebook is already trying to reassure investors by effectively lying about the growth the platform has (not) achieved in recent years. The latest results with the stock down 25% will only confirm that I am telling the truth. I don't think Mr. Zuckerberg is exactly in a position to jump out of the box. Just effectively wiping out hundreds of millions of people over a dispute over targeted advertising makes literally no sense :-) It's similar to Biden's threats of sanctions on Russia. Biden just got Russia to start trading more with China instead of Europe now. I've never really commented much on any news here. However, the world is getting so crazy that I feel the need to write something about it from time to time. Because freedom, which is really very important to me in life, is disappearing. It has disappeared completely for Americans and unfortunately it is starting to spread to Europe where I live. Do you still feel that you can say whatever you want in this country without any sanctions? A lot of people here in the Czech Republic are now in trouble on Facebook, Instagram, they are being banned just for writing 5 years ago that someone is an asshole. Often it's not just a ban, but a complete deletion of the account without the person being able to do anything. And this brings me to what I started to write, maybe it wouldn't be better news if Facebook and Instagram and META's other networks disappeared from the world, I'm convinced we'd all be better off. That's it Mr. Zuckerberg, shut down Facebook in Europe! We don't need or want it then :-)

I guess this is interesting for recent generations, but heavy swap file use was just par for the course back in the 80s/90s when addressable memory was limited and few people could afford to purchase as much RAM as their system used.

Not counting ATARI 800XL, my first PC was PC XT 8088/4.77MHz 640K RAM 20MB HDD,FDD 5.25,MS DOS 2.0 and a Hercules monitor. I bought it in 1990 for about 45.000CZK, which at that time was the equivalent of fifteen yearly salaries. It's really unbelievable how far things have come in 30 years....

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 is a 250 USD entry-level model featuring GA106-160 GPU with 2560 CUDA cores. This SKU is equipped with 8GB GDDR6 memory attached to a 128-bit bus, clearly aiming at 1080p gamers. The RTX 3050 is yet another XX50-class model to launch with hardware acceleration for ray tracing, following the mobile RTX 3050 series (based on GA107 GPU) and later RTX 2050 (Turing). This model also comes with DLSS support, which can make this card a lot more compelling based on how many games already support this technology. One of the drawbacks of RTX 3050 is the limited PCIe Gen4 interface to eight lanes. It is said that NVIDIA might at some point decide to switch production to GA107 GPU, which would not support 16 lanes due to its hardware limitations. In terms of pricing, NVIDIA promises that at least some cards today are launching with an MSRP of 249 USD. However, even in NVIDIA supplied MSRP list, it seems that this pricing was rather forced upon board partners, who will be offering much more expensive cards at the same time.

Update: Just a few hours in and all RTX 3050 GPUs are out of stock from the select few retailers that are selling RTX 3050s in the United States. Even if you did manage to find a card in stock, there was a good chance it was priced well above Nvidia's baseline MSRP.
