NVIDIA Allegedly Testing a 900 Watt TGP Ada Lovelace AD102 GPU - tech
(hx) 11:32 PM CEST - Apr,27 2022 - Post a comment / read (6)
With the release of Hopper, NVIDIA's cycle of new architecture releases is not yet over. Later this year, we expect to see next-generation gaming architecture codenamed Ada Lovelace. According to a well-known hardware leaker for NVIDIA products, @kopite7kimi, on Twitter, the green team is reportedly testing a potent variant of the upcoming AD102 SKU. As the leak indicates, we could see an Ada Lovelace AD102 SKU with a Total Graphics Power (TGP) of 900 Watts. While we don't know where this SKU is supposed to sit in the Ada Lovelace family, it could be the most powerful, Titan-like design making a comeback. Alternatively, this could be a GeForce RTX 4090 Ti SKU. It carries 48 GB of GDDR6X memory running at 24 Gbps speeds alongside monstrous TGP. Feeding the card are two 16-pin connectors.

Another confirmation from the leaker is that the upcoming RTX 4080 GPU uses the AD103 SKU variant, while the RTX 4090 uses AD102. For further information, we have to wait a few more months and see what NVIDIA decides to launch in the upcoming generation of gaming-oriented graphics cards.

European Union MEPs Agree on Making USB Type-C the Standard Charging Connector - tech
(hx) 12:13 AM CEST - Apr,25 2022 - Post a comment / read (2)
This past week, the EU's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee agreed on adopting USB Type-C as the union's standard charging connector, with 43 votes in favour and two against. It's part of the Radio Equipment Directive and it means that USB-C is now very close to becoming the de facto connector for charging a wide range of consumer electronics. The charging standard will apply to what the committee calls small and medium-sized electronic gadgets and include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers. Exemptions will apply for devices that are too small to incorporate a USB-C port, such a smart watches, health trackers and some sports equipment.

The directive still has to be approved by the EU parliament, which is expected to happen in May during the plenary session. There will be an initial transition period and the new requirements aren't expected to start to apply until early 2024. In addition to the new directive, the MEPs also want to see clear labelling on devices in terms of how much power they can deliver, since this can sometimes be hard to figure out as a consumer. They also want to see clear labelling on product packaging if a charger is supplied or not. Furthermore, the MEPs want the European Commission to present a strategy with regards to wireless chargers by the end of 2026, to make sure there's some kind of minimal interoperability between the various wireless charging standards. This is said to be to try and avoid market fragmentation, as well as to reduce e-waste and to try and prevent consumer "lock-in" to proprietary charging standards. The EU is said to end up with 11 to 13-thousand tons of e-waste from chargers alone on a yearly basis, so it's not hard to see why the union wants to see a unified charging standard for most electronics.

TSMC to Start 2 nm Production by 2025, 3 nm by the End of 2022 - tech
(hx) 05:33 PM CEST - Apr,18 2022 - Post a comment / read (2)
Responding to investor questions in TSMC's first quarter earnings call for 2022, CEO C. C. Wei reiterated that the company's upcoming manufacturing processes are generally moving smoothly throughout development. Even as TSMC announced historic revenues on the back of increased pricing throughout the semiconductor industry, the company is showing no signs of slowing down on its development. When further asked regarding the company's ability to navigate the world's troubled, inflation-ridden waters, Wei added that TSMC's strategic positioning as the leading semiconductor foundry makes it resilient to market and demand fluctuations.

TSMC's roadmap has seen multiple accelerations of late, which have placed 3 nm tape-out to occur before the end of the year. Perhaps more significantly, the company's next-generation 2 nm manufacturing process, which will make use of GAA (Gate All Around) transistor designs for greater design efficiency and density, are still on track for a 2025 volume production following an expected 2024 tape-out.

AMD Hits Hard: Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU Review & Benchmarks vs. i9-12900KS - tech
(hx) 11:07 PM CEST - Apr,14 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
The new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is here, and it's the fastest gaming processor the red team has ever made. It also offers a value proposition Intel's elite gaming CPUs cannot compete with, even if they are actually the faster chips in the final reckoning. But that doesn't change the fact that AMD's new chip is a technically impressive beast, using the latest packaging processes from TSMC to bung an inordinate amount of cache into its new CPU. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is architecturally identical to the standard Ryzen 7 5800X, using the same Zen 3 processor design, and therefore the same chiplet setup that has made AMD's recent generations of CPU such world-beaters. The original Ryzen 7 5800X runs at 3.8GHz with a 4.7GHz boost clock, while this new chip comes in with a 3.4GHz base and 4.5GHz boost clock. The “3D” in the model name refers to the additional 64MB of vertically-mounted L3 cache (V-Cache) that AMD has attached on top of the CPU die. The new chip features 96MB of L3 cache in total and a slightly lower clock speed compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X. Overall, AMD is claiming a 15 percent improvement in gaming.

Microsoft to End Windows 10 20H2 Support Next Month - tech
(hx) 12:11 PM CEST - Apr,11 2022 - Post a comment / read (3)
It’s no secret that the Windows 11 adoption rate has been pretty terrible. In fact, some sources claim that despite it being officially available now for over 6 months now, less than 9% of desktop users have actually bothered to upgrade to it. – The reasons for this are, of course, quite varied. Some have no idea how to enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Others don’t meet its rather terse system requirements. Oh, and some, rather a significant majority it seems, simply don’t want to upgrade to it. With so many remaining on Windows 10, however, it does still bear note that Microsoft is undoubtedly going to start to get terser and terser in the push for getting people to make the transition. And in one possible such example of this, following a report via BetaNews, it has been confirmed that support for Windows 10 version 20H2 will officially be ending next month. What does this mean? Well, in a nutshell, for those people still on that version of Windows 10, if you don’t at least transition to a more recent version, you’re going to shortly start losing security updates!

In all, there are four editions of Windows 10 that reach end of support at the same time. The Home, Pro, Education and Pro for Workstation releases of Windows 10 version 20H2 all reach end of service on May 10, 2022 -- just one month from now.

In a support article on its product lifecycle page, Microsoft advises users:

Windows 10, version 20H2 will reach the end of servicing on May 10, 2022. This applies to the following editions* of Windows 10 released in October of 2020:

- Windows 10 Home, version 20H2

- Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2

- Windows 10 Pro Education, version 20H2

- Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 20H2

These editions will no longer receive security updates after May 10, 2022.

The company points that that: "Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be directed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to remain supported". With Microsoft having been forcibly installing Windows 10 version 21H2 on computers since the beginning of the year, and these systems will be supported for some time to come. For the longest support times, however, an upgrade to Windows 11 is needed, although the hardware requirements mean that this will not be an option for everyone.

So to sum it all up, Windows 10 end-of-life is still on for late 2025, just need to update your version of Windows 10.

NVIDIA Claims Grace CPU Superchip is 2x Faster Than Intel Ice Lake - tech
(hx) 11:33 AM CEST - Apr,11 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
When NVIDIA announced its Grace CPU Superchip, the company officially showed its efforts of creating an HPC-oriented processor to compete with Intel and AMD. The Grace CPU Superchip combines two Grace CPU modules that use the NVLink-C2C technology to deliver 144 Arm v9 cores and 1 TB/s of memory bandwidth. Each core is Arm Neoverse N2 Perseus design, configured to achieve the highest throughput and bandwidth. As far as performance is concerned, the only detail NVIDIA provides on its website is the estimated SPECrate 2017_int_base score of over 740. Thanks to the colleges over at Tom's Hardware, we have another performance figure to look at. NVIDIA has made a slide about comparison with Intel's Ice Lake server processors. One Grace CPU Superchip was compared to two Xeon Platinum 8360Y Ice Lake CPUs configured in a dual-socket server node. The Grace CPU Superchip outperformed the Ice Lake configuration by two times and provided 2.3 times the efficiency in WRF simulation. This HPC application is CPU-bound, allowing the new Grace CPU to show off. This is all thanks to the Arm v9 Neoverse N2 cores pairing efficiently with outstanding performance. NVIDIA made a graph showcasing all HPC applications running on Arm today, with many more to come, which you can see below. Remember that NVIDIA provides this information, so we have to wait for the 2023 launch to see it in action.

AMD Radeon Software Could Alter CPU Settings Quietly - tech
(hx) 10:26 AM CEST - Apr,05 2022 - Post a comment / read (2)
According to the latest investigation made by a German publication, Igor's Lab, AMD's Adrenalin GPU software could experience unexpected behavior when Ryzen Master software is integrated into it. Supposedly, the combination of the two would allow AMD Adrenalin GPU software to misbehave and accidentally change CPU PBO and Precision Boost settings, disregarding the user's permissions. What Igor's Lab investigated was a case of Adrenalin software automatically enabling PBO or "CPU OC" setting when applying GPU profiles. This also happens when the GPU is in the Default mode, which is set automatically by the software.

Alterations can happen without user knowledge. If a user applies custom voltage and frequency settings in BIOS, Adrenalin software can and sometimes will override those settings to set arbitrary ones, potentially impacting the CPU's stability. The software can also alter CPU power limits as it has the means to do so. This problem only occurs when AMD CPU is combined with AMD GPU and AMD Ryzen Master SDK is installed. If another configuration is present, there is no change to the system. There are ways to bypass this edge case, and that is going back to BIOS to re-apply CPU settings manually or disable PBO. A Reddit user found that creating new GPU tuning profiles without loading older profiles will also bypass Adrenalin from adjusting your CPU settings. AMD hasn't made comments about the software, and so far remains a mystery why this is happening.

AMD rumored to release a low-end Radeon RX 6300 GPU - tech
(hx) 02:53 PM CEST - Apr,03 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD brought the Navi 24 to the DIY market in the form of the RX 6500 XT and the card was widely criticized by reviewers due to the aforementioned limitations. So while you may be wondering why an even slower card in the form of the RX 6300 could be a reason for worry, the answer lies in its mobile counterpart, the RX 6300M, which only comes with 2GB of VRAM across a 32-bit memory interface. If AMD decides to go this route for the desktop 6300 too, ie, a RX 6300 with only 2GB of memory, then once more we could have a repeat of the 6500 XT situation, or potentially worse, when running the card on a PCIe 3.0 or older system.
Two gigs of buffer is too low nowadays and textures, among other things, eat it up quickly and that, paired with the low x4 PCIe bandwidth could severely affect the card's performance. Fortunately though, the card is rumored to be an OEM only option which means it may not have to bear the brunt of most reviewers, though it would likely still be a bad card offered by OEMs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti reviews - tech
(hx) 12:47 PM CEST - Mar,30 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA announces the launch of its new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics cards, "the fastest GeForce GPU for the most demanding creators & gamers." For those lucky enough to get one, a new GeForce Game Ready Driver is here for your support. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti enables all 10,752 CUDA cores physically present on the "GA102" silicon that powers five GeForce SKUs. Maxing out the GA102 also gives it 84 RT cores, 336 Tensor cores, many TMUs, 112 ROPs, and of course the full 384-bit wide GDDR6X memory interface. Speaking of which, NVIDIA is introducing new 21 Gbps-rated GDDR6X memory chips with the RTX 3090 Ti that are over 7.5% faster than the 19.5 Gbps chips on the RTX 3090. This gives it a whopping 1008 GB/s bandwidth, compared to 940 GB/s on the RTX 3090. The memory size is 24 GB on both cards, and NVIDIA calculates that the large memory amount should come in handy with certain creator use-cases dealing with large data sets.

The RTX 3090 Ti is also the first graphics card to introduce the new ATX 16-pin power connector recently announced by Intel, which should become standard with the next generation of graphics cards. The connector is capable of delivering up to 600 W of power through a single set of cables. The need for this connector arose on the RTX 3090 Ti, as its typical board power for the reference spec is rated at 450 W, which takes a spaghetti of three 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The 16-pin connector is still new to the market, and PSUs with with it can be counted on your fingers, which is why board partners are required to include an NVIDIA-designed adapter cable that converts three 8-pin to a 16-pin. NVIDIA is quoting an MSRP of $2,000 for the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition, and the ASUS STRIX LC is listed online for $2,200. That is A LOT of money. Most people won't be able to afford such a graphics card. But just like the RTX 3090, I'm sure the RTX 3090 Ti will sell. Considering the +10% performance increase over the RTX 3090, which sells for $1,900 right now, slightly above $2,000 doesn't seem crazy.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090/4080 to Feature up to 24 GB of GDDR6X Memory - tech
(hx) 04:41 PM CEST - Mar,27 2022 - Post a comment / read (5)
After the data center-oriented Hopper architecture launch, NVIDIA is slowly preparing to transition the consumer section to new, gaming-focused designs codenamed Ada Lovelace. For starters, the source claims that NVIDIA is using the upcoming GeForce RTX 3090 Ti GPU as a test run for the next-generation Ada Lovelace AD102 GPU. Thanks to the authorities over at Igor's Lab, we have some additional information about the upcoming lineup. We have a sneak peek of a few features regarding the top-end GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 GPU SKUs. According to Igor's claims, NVIDIA is testing the PCIe Gen5 power connector and wants to see how it fairs with the biggest GA102 SKU - GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Additionally, we find that the AD102 GPU is supposed to be pin-compatible with GA102. This means that the number of pins located on GA102 is the same as what we are going to see on AD102. There are 12 places for memory modules on the AD102 reference design board, resulting in up to 24 GB of GDDR6X memory. As much as 24 voltage converters surround the GPU, NVIDIA will likely implement uP9512 SKU. It can drive eight phases, resulting in three voltage converters per phase, ensuring proper power delivery. The total board power (TBP) is likely rated at up to 600 Watts, meaning that the GPU, memory, and power delivery combined output 600 Watts of heat. Igor notes that board partners will bundle 12+4 (12VHPWR) to four 8-pin (PCIe old) converters to enable PSU compatibility.

Lapsus$ Gang Claims Okta Hack - tech

On Monday evening, the Lapsus$ digital extortion gang published a series of increasingly shocking posts in its Telegram channel. First, the group dumped what it claims is extensive source code from Microsoft's Bing search engine, Bing Maps, and Cortana virtual assistant software. A potential breach of an organization as big and security-conscious as Microsoft would be significant in itself, but the group followed the post with something even more alarming: screenshots apparently taken on January 21 that seem to show Lapsus$ in control of an Okta administrative or “super user” account. Okta has provided further details of the cybersecurity incident. In an updated statement, the technology vendor said "Okta service has not been breached and remains fully operational. There are no corrective actions that need to be taken by our customers." Okta also said that during the January incident, the impacted customer support engineer's account was quickly suspended while a third-party cyberforensics firm investigated the issue. "Following the completion of the service provider's investigation, we received a report from the forensics firm this week," Okta said. "The report highlighted that there was a five-day window of time between January 16-21, 2022, where an attacker had access to a support engineer's laptop."

Lapsus$ respond to Okta's statement:
