Intel Arc GPU Tear-Down: A380 Gunnir Photon Disassembly - tech
(hx) 04:27 PM CEST - Jul,16 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
In this video, we're tearing-down the Intel Arc A380 GPU on a Gunnir Photon video card. The A380 is Intel's first meaningful jump into the gaming GPU market, so these early cards have to be impressive from the board partners and all the way up to Intel's GPUs. We filmed this after collecting data but prior to writing the review; however, the review is now live

NVIDIA GeForce 516.79 HOTFIX - tech
(hx) 11:29 AM CEST - Jul,16 2022 - Post a comment
Nobody likes it when a game freezes up or outright crashes (not even gaming masochists), so kudos to NVIDIA for pushing out a GeForce hotfix driver to address that very thing in a handful of popular titles. The hotfix also promises better overall stability in some specific games, and addresses a performance issue some people have observed in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Here's the full list of games and fixes...
  • Apex Legends: Improves gameplay stability
  • Overwatch: Game may freeze on launching a match
  • Dungeons 3: Game will crash on startup
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: Performance improvement when using DLSS is lower compared to previous drivers
  • Destiny 2: Game may randomly freeze after launching game or during gameplay
  • Halo Infinite: Increase stability during gameplay
If you're not running into any of the above issues, you'd be fine to skip the hotfix, as it doesn't include anything else of note—there are no security patches, additional game optimizations, or anything else not listed above. The only way to get the hotfix is through a manual download. NVIDIA's GeForce Experience doesn't fetch hotfix releases, nor will you find it when heading to NVIDIA's driver download page
Ryzen 7600X LOOKS AMAZING In Leaked Benchmark - tech
(hx) 12:02 AM CEST - Jul,16 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
A Zen 4 benchmark has LEAKED, specificially for the Ryzen 7600X, and in this early performance benchmark, the Zen 4 Ryzen 7600X CPU BEATS the flagship Zen 3 processor, the 5950X. We take a look at the specs and synthetic performance revealed by this early bench, and what it means for Zen 4. While this is an early engineering sample, we can still see how much of a MONSTER even the mid range Ryzen 7000 CPUs can be. But how will the Ryzen 7600X, and the other Zen 4 SKUs, do not only in gaming benchmarks, but against Intel's Raptor Lake?

Intel Arc A380 Gaming GPU Review & Benchmarks vs. AMD RX 6400,GTX 1650 - tech
(hx) 06:12 PM CEST - Jul,13 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
This is our first Intel Arc GPU benchmark & review (other than the DG1) for a true gaming desktop video card from Intel. The Arc A380 competes with the AMD RX 6400 closest, maybe the GT 1630 (we'll see), and aims to be a $130-$150 card. The A380 launched only in China at first, but will very likely find its way into the rest of the world's markets. The Intel Arc A750 is coming next, and we have shots of that in this video, but we don't have a price target on it yet. These cards also have AV1 capabilities, which is something we'll look at in a future piece!

Breaking AMD's Rules: Overclocking the Ryzen 7 5800X3D - tech
(hx) 11:05 AM CEST - Jul,07 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
We're benchmarking MSI's "Kombo Strike" feature that circumvents AMD's rules to "overclock" (lightly used) the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPUs. Kombo Strike is a new MSI feature ranging Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 and is available on the company's X570 and B550 boards. We've already performed benchmarking and reviews on the Gigabyte X570 Master, so we'll be comparing MSI vs. Gigabyte motherboards for AMD both stock and with MSI's (exclusive) Kombo Strike utility.

Intel's CPU socket for the Alder Lake (12th Gen) CPUs applies higher pressure on one side, causing reduced pressure between the cooler coldplate and CPU. We're replacing the stock Intel ILM (on the socket) with a Thermal Grizzly Contact Frame. Testing includes analysis of pressure on the 12900KS, 12900K, and other CPUs, core-to-core deltas, thermals, and more.

AMD Releases New Adrenalin Edition Driver for Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 01:04 PM CEST - Jun,25 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD has released a new version of its Adrenalin Edition driver, and it's an unusual one in that it targets Radeon users who are still using Windows 7, an older version of the operating system that red team's modern drivers no longer officially support. Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 fixes a single issue on the older OS, whereby AMD Radeon Software may fail to install on some graphics cards that include the Radeon RX 6900 XT. There are also two known issues in the form of Enhanced Sync potentially causing black screens on some games and system configurations and Radeon performance metrics and logging features reporting extremely high and incorrect memory clock values. AMD's latest Adrenalin Edition driver for Windows 7 follows 22.5.2, which was released earlier this week with support for new games (e.g., Sniper Elite 5), DirectX 11 optimizations for Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards, and other improvements.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 for Windows 7 Release Notes

Fixed Issues

  • AMD Radeon Software may fail to install on some AMD Graphics Products such as the Radeon RX 6900 XT.

Known Issues

  • Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.
  • Radeon performance metrics and logging features may intermittently report extremely high and incorrect memory clock values.
The AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 for Windows 7 installation package can be downloaded from the following links:

The Brewing Problem with GPU Power Design - tech
(hx) 10:58 AM CEST - Jun,24 2022 - Post a comment
Power transients from high-end NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards can cause PC shutdowns. We explain what they are, measure them in the 30 series, and discuss their impact on the upcoming NVIDIA RTX 40 series GPUs (e.g. the rumored RTX 4080 and RTX 4090). NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 Ti consumes more power than any consumer GPU we’ve ever seen. The power draw of this card prompted investigation into how much power 3090s, 3080s, and even the venerable 1080 Ti consume. Transient power spikes from these cards can ask for 2x and more than the normal max power target. PSUs like the Seasonic PRIME line and the EVGA GA line might have trouble with these transients. We explain what these transient spikes are and how they impact PC building, and particularly, how much you need to plan ahead for future GPU purchases if this problem doesn’t get addressed by NVIDIA and AMD (or the PSU manufacturers) adequately.
