$4,000 Audio Cable vs. $7 Amazon Basics: Test Proves They're Identically Uselessly Expensive - tech
(hx) 06:13 PM CEST - Mar,29 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
A rigorous blind test by Audio Science Review has demolished the myth of premium audio cables, showing that a high-end $4,000 Kimber Kable RCA interconnect performs no better than a $7 Amazon Basics cable. Using professional Audio Precision analyzer equipment, both cables delivered identical results for distortion, frequency response, phase, and jitter, with the cheap cable even showing marginally lower noise. The findings confirm what audio engineers have long known: competent basic cables transmit signals perfectly for high-fidelity audio without any audible or measurable advantage from luxury pricing. This latest evidence adds to decades of blind tests proving that perceived differences in expensive cables stem almost entirely from placebo and expectation bias.

Fake Samsung 990 Pro SSD Clone is So Good, It's Nearly Impossible to Spot - tech
(hx) 01:25 PM CET - Mar,27 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Exceptional counterfeit versions of Samsung's popular 990 Pro SSD are flooding the market, replicating near-identical performance that blurs the line between genuine and fake drives. The high-quality clones have emerged amid surging demand for AI computing hardware, fueling a booming knock-off industry. Buyers risk purchasing fakes that look and perform almost exactly like the real thing, making detection extremely difficult. This development highlights growing challenges in the PC component space as counterfeiters leverage advanced manufacturing techniques.
The fake Samsung 990 Pro features a sticker that closely mimics the original. This is where the technical know-how comes into play. The drive may look authentic on the surface, but a closer inspection reveals drastic discrepancies. For starters, the Samsung 990 Pro leverages the brand's proprietary Pascal SSD controller. The fake uses the Maxio MAP1602 SSD controller, which has a different design and is smaller than the Pascal controller. Tellingly, the rear of the counterfeit SSD even openly states the Maxio model number.

Another key distinction lies in DRAM and NAND. The Samsung 990 Pro features LPDDR4 memory, a component absent from the fake due to the DRAM-less nature of the Maxio MAP1602 SSD controller. As for the NAND, the original uses Samsung’s 176-Layer V-NAND TLC flash, while the type in the counterfeit remains uncertain. It’s likely QLC, though, since counterfeiters won't spend extra on TLC for a product whose primary purpose is to bamboozle the buyer.

Typical Samsung 990 Pro lookalikes fall flat when you benchmark them. Some fakes are slower than a USB 2.0 pendrive, while others perform similarly to a PCIe 3.0 SSD. However, the one that Akiba PC Hotline! had in its possession exhibited a solid, very convincing performance. The drive delivered sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,255 MB/s and 6,090 MB/s, respectively, just a bit shy of the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB's rated speeds of 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s.

Microsoft Kills Popular Windows 11 Registry Hack for Native NVMe SSD Support - tech
(hx) 07:08 PM CET - Mar,24 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft has shut down a widely used registry hack that enabled the native nvmedisk.sys driver on Windows 11, which users reported delivering 10-15% better SSD performance through lower latency and higher transfer speeds. The tweak, previously simple to apply, is now blocked in the latest Insider builds, forcing enthusiasts to hunt for workarounds like third-party tools or updated feature IDs. Some users argue the change harms Microsoft's image, especially since native NVMe support already exists in Windows Server. Others note the driver may have caused instability on certain hardware, while a few claim the feature still works with minor adjustments.
The trick, which ported a Windows Server 2025 feature to consumer PCs running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, had delivered up to 85% higher random write performance in earlier benchmarks. Unfortunately, the four FeatureManagement registry overrides that previously activated the native NVMe stack no longer function.

The native NVMe driver (nvmedisk.sys) replaces the legacy storage path that has routed NVMe commands through a SCSI translation layer since before NVMe SSDs existed. Microsoft originally shipped the driver in Windows Server 2025 last December, claiming up to 80% higher IOPS and 45% lower CPU utilization under high I/O loads. The driver binary was already present in Windows 11 but disabled by default.
Microsoft really isn't helping its image here. The NVME driver should've been brought officially to Windows 11 at the same time as the server build!!!

Samsung's SATA SSD Era Ends: Why Your Next Upgrade Just Got Pricier - tech
(hx) 04:03 PM CET - Mar,23 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Samsung is reportedly winding down production of SATA-based consumer SSDs like the popular 870 EVO series to prioritize faster NVMe drives and high-margin enterprise storage. Although the company has publicly denied fully ending SATA SSD production, industry sources indicate a shift that could make affordable high-capacity storage for older PCs, NAS systems, and secondary drives harder to find. This change comes as modern technology favors PCIe NVMe for superior speeds, rendering SATA's 600MB/s limit outdated. Consumers may face higher costs for upgrades, needing pricier NVMe options or adapters, with remaining SATA stock likely seeing price increases. Experts recommend stockpiling reliable models like the 870 EVO before the transition impacts availability further.
Samsung likely sees less value in dedicating engineering and production capacity to optimizing new high?density NAND for the 600MB/s ceiling of SATA, especially when NVMe can use the same NAND at much higher speeds. If Samsung eventually scales back SATA SSDs, the market may rely more on smaller brands and lower?tier OEMs, which can make it harder to find high?quality, long?warranty SATA drives at consumer?friendly prices. That doesn’t mean Samsung?grade reliability is gone, but the easiest path to it through Samsung’s 800?series may narrow.

To begin with, SATA drives are easy to cool. Their plastic/metal 2.5-inch shells act as natural heat sinks, meaning you don't have to implement active cooling. However, NVMe drives aren't so easy to deal with. As you migrate to high-capacity M.2 drives to replace your SATA storage, you might encounter thermal throttling. High-capacity NVMe drives, particularly faster, more modern drives, run extremely hot and, as a result, can slow themselves down to prevent overheating and damaging their internal components.

In order for you to prevent this further, you also need to make sure you have active cooling in place or at least a heat sink, which doesn't come included with the drive itself. This is another cost you have to incur on top of the price of the drive itself being more expensive than SATA to begin with.
Update 27.5.2026: Samsung says it is not planning to phase out its consumer SSD business. A company spokesperson denied the online claims that Samsung would stop making SATA SSDs.
