Steve & Gordon discuss AMD's new laptop CPU naming problem where, after 17 minutes of discussion, we determine that the year is ultimately the problem for AMD's new naming scheme. This was mostly meant to be a fun discussion at an event where we had just been given a decoder wheel for AMD's new CPU names. The wheel is genuinely really cool, but it does indicate a bigger problem -- needing a decoder ring to understand a product name.

Apple's iPhone 14 Event: Everything Revealed in 12 Minutes - tech
(hx) 10:24 PM CEST - Sep,07 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
At Apple's "Far Out" event, the company unveils new products including the iPhone 14, Apple AirPods Pro and Apple Watch Series 8.

Apple has revealed the iPhone 14 series, with new features, improved specs, and new size options. In place of a Mini option, the iPhone 14 will come in the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen size options as the Pro models. The larger model is called the iPhone 14 Plus, while the Pro models keep the same screen sizes and naming scheme (Pro and Pro Max) as last year. All of the new iPhone 14 models include at least 2x better low-light performance on all cameras, including front cameras. They also include Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection, and move completely to eSIM, eliminating physical SIM cards. The Pro models move from a notched display design to a "pill" shape for the TrueDepth camera-and-sensor system, which changes shape via software in a feature Apple calls Dynamic Island. Emergency SOS via Satellite uses a low-bandwidth satellite data network. It requires you to point the phone at the satellite, which the interface guides you through. It only supports short messages sent at low speed, even using 3x compression. Messages may take 15 seconds or up to a few minutes to send. The interface guides you through creating a concise message that contains the info emergency responders will need to provide help. For 911 call centers that can't receive text messages directly, Apple will call that center and relay your message. The service also supports non-emergency usage, but only in the form of location sharing. The feature will be available first in the US and Canada starting in November, and will be free for the first two years. Crash Detection utilizes a new high dynamic range gyroscope and dual-core accelerometer to automatically detect a car crash and alert emergency services. The new dual eSIM works with all major US carriers and can be set up even without Wi-Fi. The 12 megapixel main camera has a larger sensor and faster lens for 49% better low-light performance in low light via hardware alone, while Deep Fusion has been improved and renamed Photonic Engine, boosting low-light performance 2x on all cameras, for a total boost of 2.5x on the main camera. The front camera is also improved and now has auto-focus. A new Action Mode provides gimbal-like stabilization for video. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus do not feature an all-new chip like the Pro models, instead using an A15 Bionic chip like last year's models. However, Apple has redesigned the aluminum body to provide better thermals, which may improve peak chip performance. Apple says the iPhone 14 Plus has the best battery life ever for an iPhone. The 14 series will come in five colors: blue, purple, Midnight, Starlight, and Product Red. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have all the features of the standard iPhone 14 models, plus the new Dynamic Island display design, always-on display, better display specs, better cameras, a new A16 Bionic chip, and stainless steel bodies. The Dynamic Island takes up 30% less space than Apple's notch. Via software, the black pill area can expand a little to the sides to show background activity status, or split in two to show two different activities. For more important alerts or interactive controls, it can expand vertically as well. An API will allow third-party apps to access the Dynamic Island display area, such as a sports app showing a live-updating game score. The always-on display uses LPTO dimming and refresh down to 1 Hz to keep battery life in check. Unlike some always-on displays, it supports widgets and can show wallpaper over the whole display. The display also has thinner bezels and is (Apple claims) the brightest display on any smartphone, offering up to 2,000 nits peak brightness outdoors. The main camera is now 48 megapixel, enabling a high-quality 2x tele mode while leaving the dedicated telephoto camera to 3x. The camera also offers a 48-megapixel ProRAW mode. The wide camera offers 3x better low-light performance, while the other cameras offer 2x better. A sophisticated new LED flash offers nine discrete LEDS shining through a special lens that lets it effectively "zoom" to match the current focal length. The new A16 Bionic chip engages the whole chip for photography, able to perform 4 trillion operations per photo. It uses a 4nm manufacturing process that improves power efficiency. The Pro and Pro Max will be available in black, silver, gold, and purple. The iPhone 14 will start at $799, the iPhone 14 Plus: $899, the iPhone 14 Pro: $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max: $1,099. All models will be available with 128, 256, or 512 GB of storage, while the Pro series also gets a 1 TB option. Pre-orders start Friday, September 9th. Most models ship September 16th, except the 14 Plus which will ship October 7th.

Apple has also revealed its 2nd-generation AirPods Pro, now with ANC (active noise cancellation) that can cancel 2x the noise. It has has a revamped transparency mode called Adaptive Transparency, which samples outside sound 48,000 times per second so it can react quickly to dampen sudden loud noises. These features are thanks to a new Apple H2 chip, which also improves battery life 33%, to 6 hours of listening time. You can now adjust volume by swiping up or down on the stalk. The case is also upgraded, offering 6 more hours of battery life (for 30 total), precision finding when lost thanks to a U1 UWB chip, and a speaker that can also help locate the case when lost. The case can also now charge from a Apple Watch charger. A Personalized Spatial Audio feature uses the TrueDepth camera on your iPhone to create a 3D map of your unique ears, enabling more personalized sound. Finally, a new XS ear tip size enables a better fit for some users. The AirPods Pro 2nd Gen. will run $249 and ship Sept. 23rd.

AMD Ryzen 7950X, 7900X, 7700X, & 7600X Specs, Price, Release Date, & Zen 4 - tech

AMD just announced its Ryzen 9 7950X, Ryzen 9 7900X, R7 7700X, and R5 7600X CPU specs, prices, release dates, and gave some details about its Zen 4 architecture. The company's new AM5 motherboards with X670, X670E, and eventual B-series chipsets will be launching alongside the Ryzen 7000 CPUs on September 27, 2022.

This puts AMD into direct competition with Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs and its upcoming 13 series CPUs, like the 13900K. Benchmarks of the AMD R9 7950X, R9 7900X, R7 7700X, and R5 7600X will come soon, closer to launch, when we'll have our reviews of the new AMD Zen 4 CPUs. As for pricing, the range starts at $300 and goes up to $700; motherboards are cited to start at $125 for B650. We think AMD's biggest weak spot here will be its low-end 7600X, which will mostly run into value proposition challenges with AM5 motherboards and DDR5 RAM, as it doesn't support DDR4 as a cheaper option. We'll have additional videos soon about AMD Ryzen 7000 overclocking, architecture, and more.

Walmart's $8 CPU Frame vs. $800 i9-12900KS - tech
(hx) 04:47 PM CEST - Aug,28 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
As a final part of our CPU Contact Frame for Intel 12th Gen coverage, we're testing and reviewing the Walmart CPU frame by putting it on our $800 test CPU -- hopefully it goes OK. This CPU contact frame follows our previous reviews of Intel "unbending" CPU frames, starting with the Thermal Grizzly contact frame and leading to the Thermalright contact frame. Now, we're looking at the Binyou or Cheukchi frame from Walmart and Amazon only. We haven't heard of these companies, but the product is simple enough, so it's cheap enough. At $8 to $14 or so, these frames land between Thermalright (which is a known brand) and Thermal Grizzly (which bills itself as a 'premiere' brand, priced at $35).

The world's first 240 Hz OLED screen on the MSI Raider GE67 HX gaming laptop revealed - tech
(hx) 05:03 PM CEST - Aug,19 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
MSI’s Raider GE67 HX 2022 gaming laptop is the first to feature a 15.6-inch 1440p OLED display with 240 Hz. Vincent Theo from HDTVTest managed to get his hands on the MSI laptop and one of his latest Youtube videos reveals how it compares to existing OLED TVs and monitors. Right off the bat, Theo claims that the 240 Hz display undoubtedly delivers the clearest and cleanest motion seen on modern displays (including plasmas). It turns out that the 240 Hz panel is supplied by Samsung Display, but it is not using QD-OLED technology. Given its spectral power distribution and subpixel arrangement that could cause fringing artifacts on some smaller Windows fonts, the 240 Hz screen appears to be similar to the OLED displays found on Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro. In order to improve perceived contrast, MSI included a glossy finish for the OLED display, which is quite a rare sight on non-Apple laptops nowadays. Unfortunately, this coating exhibits yellow tinting off axis, with some rainbow effect at extreme angles. The smaller size of the panel does not allow it to be too bright on 10% test windows (606 cd/m²), but it is plenty bright full field at 450 cd/m².

Intel Xe And Arc Graphics Lack DX9 Support Forcing DX12 Emulation - tech
(hx) 02:03 PM CEST - Aug,16 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel has revealed that its upcoming ARC discrete GPUs will not natively support DirectX 9. Instead, the blue team will rely on Microsoft’s D3D9On12 interface in order to emulate DX9 games.
Does my system with Intel Graphics support DX9?

Resolution

12th generation Intel processor's integrated GPU and Arc discrete GPU no longer support D3D9 natively. Applications and games based on DirectX 9 can still work through Microsoft* D3D9On12 interface.

The integrated GPU on 11th generation and older Intel processors supports DX9 natively, but they can be combined with Arc graphics cards. If so, rendering is likely to be handled by the card and not the iGPU (unless the card is disabled). Thus, the system will be using DX9On12 instead of DX9.

Since DirectX is property of and is sustained by Microsoft, troubleshooting of DX9 apps and games issues require promoting any findings to Microsoft Support so they can include the proper fixes in their next update of the operating system and the DirectX APIs.
The comical part of the support announcement is how Intel rather unashamedly passes the buck for any issues in DX9 games to Microsoft. The article clearly says "troubleshooting of DX9 apps and games issues require promoting any findings to Microsoft Support." It's true that problems in DX9 games could certainly be down to the D3D9On12 layer, but it's also rather clear that Microsoft is through working on it. Furthermore, there's no reason rendering issues in D3D9On12 couldn't be down to a bug in Intel's own graphics driver. Of course, it's understandable that Intel's graphics driver team is overloaded just trying to get DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan working properly—to say nothing of OpenGL support. Contrary to popular belief, Vulkan does not supersede or replace OpenGL in its entirety, and if Intel wants to fully support Windows software, then Arc is going to need quality OpenGL support, too. Despite the majority of big AAA releases moving to DirectX 12, those aren't really the games people are playing for the most part. If we peek at the Steam player data, most of the top games going right now are based on DirectX 11. Intel probably thinks that DirectX 9 games are lightweight enough that the D3D9On12 translator will still provide sufficient performance, and that may indeed be the case.
NVIDIA Reportedly Restarts RTX 3080 12GB Production - tech
(d@rkfu) 10:49 AM CEST - Aug,16 2022 - Post a comment
Nvidia has restarted GeForce RTX 3080 12GB production, according to a well-known Twitter tech tipster. It is thought that this particular graphics card will be a good vehicle for Nvidia and partners to burn through remaining large stocks of GA102 GPUs, due to its original scarcity and the favor it has found with hardware enthusiasts in recent months. The 12GB variant of the RTX 3080 was launched at the height of the crypto-boom, but it was never even given an official MSRP. Its street price reflected its relative desirability though, with a premium over its 10GB sibling in excess of 40% during the ETH mining heydays. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 12GB doesn’t only offer 2GB more VRAM than the 10GB variant, there are some important (mostly positive) differences to the CUDA core configuration and to the memory bus width. One slight change which might be considered for the worse is that the 12GB version of the RTX 3080 Nvidia scaled back the base clock, though it retained the same boost clocks. Lastly, the new 12GB model had a slightly raised reference TDP of 350W (vs 320W). Tallying all the differences, the CUDA core quota and memory quantity/bus advantage meant that the 12GB version of the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card was the one to covet, especially when gaming at higher resolutions like 4K. Though Nvidia and partners reportedly ceased production of the RTX 3080 12GB about two months ago, its reputation as a choice Ampere product probably helped get it once again rolling along production lines.
