13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K Crosses 9 GHz in Overclocking Frequency World Record - tech
(hx) 09:35 AM CET - Dec,23 2022 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel has announced that its 13th Gen Intel Core platform has successfully been used to set a new overclocking frequency world record again, with ASUS’ overclocking team managing to push a 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K processor to 9.008 GHz, a new achievement that comes just a few months after the previous frequency world record, also set by the Core i9-13900K. “The 13th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family has overtaken the longstanding processor overclocking frequency world record,” Intel revealed in a press release dated today. “In less than three months, the Intel Core i9-13900K has twice set the frequency overclocking world record.” Intel goes on to confirm some of the hardware involved, which include the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX, a premium motherboard from ASUS that features a white PCB and is, not surprisingly, built for overclocking.

The ASUS overclocking team officially set a new world record for overclocking, pushing the 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K past the 9 gigahertz barrier to 9.008 GHz. Additionally, the team set new records in PIFAST (6.85 seconds) and SUPERPI 1M (3.822 seconds). Combining the Core i9-13900K with the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX – and a healthy dose of liquid helium – the ASUS overclocking team became the latest to showcase the unprecedented overclocking performance in Intel’s unlocked processors.

NVIDIA's RTX 4080 Problem: They're Not Selling & MSRP Doesn't Exist - tech
(hx) 08:50 PM CET - Dec,20 2022 - Post a comment / read (3)
The NVIDIA RTX 4080 has a problem: No one is buying it -- or at least, not enough people that board partners are feeling relief from their investment. They're on the hook for millions upon millions of dollars in inventory, and it's because NVIDIA's pricing structure is so egregiously bad that sales have finally slowed. NVIDIA got comfortable with a market where literally anything would sell, no exaggeration, and just existing would guarantee a sale. But that market is over, and now NVIDIA has an RTX 4080 problem. The other issue is that MSRP cards don't exist -- partners launched some, then stopped stocking them.

Skype gets real-time video calls translation "TruVoice" with your personal voice - tech
(d@rkfu) 09:56 AM CET - Dec,15 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft continues breaking the language barrier by giving Skype users more tools for translating chats and calls. The latest Skype update introduces real-time translation for video calls with your personal voice (TruVoice), allowing your interlocutor to hear the translation as you would speak it. TruVoice is a big step for Skype in its mission to let people communicate with those whose language they do not know. Now you can ditch robotic voices and enjoy translation that sounds just like the person you are talking to. The AI that powers the feature uses several tools to do its magic. Microsoft says Skype Translator combines speech recognition with natural language processing, then samples your words to tune the translation and make it sound like you, achieving a more comfortable and human-like conversation. Microsoft also lets you disable the TruVoice feature and switch to standard robotic voices. You can see how the two options compare in the video below:

The new translation capabilities in Skype support English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and other languages. For now, TruVoice is available only in one-to-one calls, but Microsoft promises to upgrade group calls and Telephony in the next few months.

AMD's Greedy Upsell: RX 7900 XT Review & Benchmarks vs. XTX, 4080, & More - tech
(hx) 11:26 AM CET - Dec,13 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD's RX 7900 XT is basically just an upsell technique for the RX 7900 XTX. The XT fails to provide any meaningful value over last generation cards, it fails to beat any NVIDIA 40-series cards, and it is clearly a greedy play at pushing consumers to the RX 7900 XTX -- just like the 4080 is designed to push people to the 4090, except NVIDIA at least has the defense of being the literal 'best' on the charts. This review and benchmark of the AMD RX 7900 XT will test it vs. the RX 7900 XTX, the NVIDIA RTX 4080 and 4090, the AMD RX 6950 XT, and more. We're looking at gaming performance, ray tracing, thermals, and power.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Review & GPU Benchmarks: Gaming, Thermals, Power, & Noise - tech
(hx) 07:40 PM CET - Dec,12 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
This review and benchmark of the AMD RX 7900 XTX video card tests it vs. the NVIDIA RTX 4080, RTX 4090, RTX 3080, and last generation AMD RX 6950 XT and 6900 XT GPUs. Our review of the RX 7900 XT is coming up later, as is our tear-down of the RX 7900 XTX reference video card from AMD. Overall, the XTX is primarily interesting for its price positioning versus the RTX 4080. AMD was never going to beat the RTX 4090 with a $1000 card, and it doesn't. But it's also not anywhere close in price. The RTX 4080 at $1200 (at the time of filming) is the real fight for AMD's RX 7900 XTX. Our testing today included power transients, thermals, noise, and gaming benchmarks (both rasterization and ray tracing). The transients, voltage regulation, noise, and thermals need some work, but that's all on the AMD reference design -- it'll be up to partners to pull weight to fix those aspects.

AMD Software Adrenalin 22.11.2 Released - tech
(hx) 11:39 PM CET - Dec,04 2022 - Post a comment
AMD released the latest version of the AMD Software Adrenalin drivers. Although released in December, the drivers bear the version number 22.11.2 (as opposed to something like 22.12.1); as they were probably finalized late last month. Version 22.11.2 beta adds optimization for "The Callisto Protocol," "Need for Speed Unbound," and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" Next-Gen Update. Among the issues fixed with this release are intermittent driver timeout or black-screen occurring with Radeon RX 6000-series during video playback and window switching on machines powered by RX 6000-series graphics and 240 Hz monitors.

Online video stuttering noticed in Firefox with hardware-acceleration on machines with RX 6000 series graphics, has been fixed. GPU utilization remaining at 100% after closing games on machines powered by RX 570 "Polaris" graphics cards caused due to buggy AMDRSServ.exe, has been fixed. A driver timeout or black-screen while videos are playing with VRChat on RX 6000-series GPU powered machines, has been fixed.
Support for:
    The Callisto Protocol
    Need for Speed Unbound
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen Update

Fixed Issues
During video playback and window switching, an intermittent driver timeout or black screen may occur on Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs using some 240 Hz refresh rate displays or high refresh rate primary display plus low refresh rate secondary display configurations.
Stuttering may occur during video playback using hardware acceleration with Firefox on Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs.
AMDRSServ.exe may cause GPU utilization to remain at 100% after closing games on some AMD Graphics Products such as Radeon 570.
An intermittent driver timeout or black screen may occur while videos are playing in VRChat on Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs.

Known Issues
Intermittent system stuttering or UI flickering may occur when two videos are simultaneously playing using chromium-based browsers.
During video playback and gameplay, frame drop may occur in chromium-based browsers with variable refresh rate enabled extended displays.
Brief display corruption may occur when switching between video and game windows on some AMD Graphics Products such as the Radeon RX 6700 XT.
Texture flickering or artifacts may occur during Warhammer 40,000: Darktide gameplay.

Nvidia RTX 4090 now requires BIOS update to fix NFS Unbound - tech
(d@rkfu) 05:36 PM CET - Dec,02 2022 - Post a comment / read (3)
It is probably fair to say that the GeForce RTX 4000 series launch hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Nvidia. First, we had the issue of melting 12-pin power connectors on the RTX 4090 which is sure to leave affected users displeased. Secondly, Nvidia is seemingly having a hard time selling its RTX 4080 due to its high MSRP of $1,199, which has landed it very close to the much better $1,599 RTX 4090. Consequently, 4080 scalpers are apparently unable to get rid of the cards they bought in early as there is an abundance of these cards. And these are besides the Windows 11 22H2-related problems, even though this one lies mostly on Microsoft. Now, a new issue is plaguing Nvidia RTX 4090 cards where Need for Speed Unbound players have reported flashing and blinking screens. After investigating, EA's Global Community Manager, Jeff Braddock, published a fix for the bug, whereby users are required to do a VGA BIOS (vBIOS) update on their 4090.
We've seen reports of Flashing/Blinking Display issues with folks on high-end PCs (Nvidia RTX 4090). After testing, we've found a workaround/fix is to upgrade the bios on the 4090 video card.

You will need to download the NVIDIA GPU UEFI Firmware Update tool, run it and then follow the onscreen directions. Once complete, you should be able to play without having the issue reoccur.
You can find the Nvidia GPU UEFI Firmware tool on Nvidia's website here. If you want to do it another way, you can find the necessary standalone vBIOS on TechPowerUp's website here.

The 3Dfx Voodoo 2 - Taking 3D to the Next Level! - tech

The original 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics accelerator completely transformed the world of 3D gaming, but by late 1997 the competition was beginning to heat up. How do you improve on such a legendary card? You double down on EVERYTHING. The Voodoo 2 improves upon the original in pretty much every way and even allows two cards to work together in SLI for truly next-level 3D performance.

Who else remembers this? :-) I remember very well my first Voodoo 2 card and Unreal 2. It was a similar experience to the first time I heard music playing from a CD player! Just the Wow effect, just got you sitting on your ass. When was the last time you had a Wow effect/feeling and from what? Let me know!
