AMD Radeon 23.1.1 driver fixes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt crash - tech
(hx) 08:20 AM CET - Jan,13 2023 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD has released a new WHQL driver update version 23.1.1 for its latest and great Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs, namely the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT. This is the third driver in a row the Santa Clara company has released for its Radeon RX 79000 series without any new update for its RX 6000 series and older cards. The new driver fixes some bugs when applying certain settings like Auto Overclock and factory reset. The driver also has a couple of game crash fixes like in the case of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when ray tracing is enabled. Some of the high power usage bugs still remain.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Expected to Launch at Feb. 1 Event - tech
(hx) 12:10 AM CET - Jan,12 2023 - Post a comment
Samsung's Galaxy S23 is expected to be the focus of the phone maker's next Unpacked event, which the company just announced will take place on Feb. 1. This year, a new lineup would compete directly with Apple's iPhone 14 and Google's Pixel 7. Samsung didn't provide details Tuesday about what to expect from the event, which will be held in person in San Francisco and also broadcast online. But the company typically releases new Galaxy S phones during the first quarter, including the Galaxy S22 last year. The announcement also follows leaks, such as this report from Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily that suggested an early February debut for the Galaxy S23.  If Samsung follows its previous pattern, we can expect to see three versions of its new phone: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung's invitation includes an image of three spotlights ranging in size from small to medium to large, possibly hinting as much.

Time To Buy Zen 4? - AMD Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 7 7700 & Ryzen 9 7900 Review & Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 08:02 PM CET - Jan,10 2023 - Post a comment / read (1)
Based on current retail pricing, it will come as no surprise to learn that the Ryzen 5 5600 offers the best value as it can be had for as little as $135, although stock for it seems to be drying up. Now, looking at the 7600X, it's interesting to see that at $250, it offers the same value as the 7600, ignoring that it doesn't come with a cooler. We do expect the 7600X to rise in price back towards the $300 MSRP now that the 7600 is available. In terms of value, both slaughter the Core i5-13600K which currently costs $320. You could reduce the cost of the Core i5 build by ~$100 with a cheaper DDR4 B660 board and memory, but even if we take the same 221 fps that would only place it roughly on par with the 7600 in terms of value, and we know from previous testing that the 13600K is 8% slower on average using affordable DDR4 memory. So it would seem AMD has Intel beat on value for the 7600/7600X vs 13600K battle for now.

The Ryzen 7 7700 is interesting because again it's slightly worse value than the 7700X which is currently selling for just $345, but could head back towards the MSRP now that the 7700 is on the market. For those building a new system the 7700X makes more sense than any of the 8-core AM4 options, including the 5800X3D as you're getting slightly better performance at a similar cost per frame, on a newer platform, supporting DDR5 with an upgrade path. For gamers the 7700 also beats the 13700K in terms of value, offering a similar level of performance at a lower price point. But if productivity is a priority, then ignore that as the 13700K might be the faster option depending on the workload. The Ryzen 9 7900 is a nice CPU, but it doesn't make much sense for gamers. You're much better off with the single CCD Ryzen 7 parts, and for productivity you might as well get the 7950X, or 13900K, though power usage and thermal issues make the Core i9 a lot less practical as a productivity CPU.

NVIDIA's Rip-Off - RTX 4070 Ti Review & Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 04:23 PM CET - Jan,09 2023 - Post a comment
This review and benchmark of the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti looks at NVIDIA’s newest GPU vs. the RTX 4080 16GB, talks about why it would have been beyond disingenuous (and just straight-up lying) to call it an RTX 4080 “12GB” originally, and how NVIDIA is stuck in a hard place. The 4070 Ti is, and never will be, “3x better” than the RTX 3090 Ti -- despite NVIDIA’s misleading marketing to the contrary. It is hardly better than a 3080 -- and sometimes not even that -- and its positioning forces NVIDIA to choose between two bad options: One, they could call it a “4080” and implicitly state that there’s been no generational improvement between 80-class cards for 2 years while increasing the price by $200, or two, they could call it a “4070 Ti” and tell customers that the 70-class silicon is now 60% more expensive than 2 years ago. Neither option is good, and it was too late to fully cancel the product by the time they realized their mistakes. Benchmarks include ray tracing, rasterization, thermals, power, power transients, and more. We test the ASUS RTX 4070 Ti TUF vs. the RTX 4080 16GB, RTX 4090, RTX 3080, AMD RX 7900 XTX and XT, and more.

The ToughAir 710 is Thermaltake's answer to the Noctua D15 and be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4. Since its based on modern technology versus something that's almost 5 years old, it could actually do that for a lower price. But then there's also the trend for 420mm AIOs and they've got that covered too with the TOUGHLIQUID Ultra 420!

RTX 3080 vs 7900 XTX vs RTX 4080: Don't get ripped off - tech
(hx) 06:27 PM CET - Dec,27 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
Buying a high end GPU is complicated right now. The RTX 3080 prices are actually going up (new), but their used prices have come down quite a bit. The 4080 is available near its MSRP, but that MSRP is extremely high, and now AMD has launched the 7900 XTX at $200 less than the 4080. In this video we look at how these GPUs perform at 4K and 1440p in a variety of games including new graphically demanding "next gen" titles, including Unreal Engine 5.1 with Lumen and Nanite, along with some older games as well as RT ON/OFF. The test system specs are below, and all footage was captured on an external capture card to eliminate any recording overhead (although this can introduce screen tearing to the recordings).

13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K Crosses 9 GHz in Overclocking Frequency World Record - tech
(hx) 09:35 AM CET - Dec,23 2022 - Post a comment / read (2)
Intel has announced that its 13th Gen Intel Core platform has successfully been used to set a new overclocking frequency world record again, with ASUS’ overclocking team managing to push a 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K processor to 9.008 GHz, a new achievement that comes just a few months after the previous frequency world record, also set by the Core i9-13900K. “The 13th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family has overtaken the longstanding processor overclocking frequency world record,” Intel revealed in a press release dated today. “In less than three months, the Intel Core i9-13900K has twice set the frequency overclocking world record.” Intel goes on to confirm some of the hardware involved, which include the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX, a premium motherboard from ASUS that features a white PCB and is, not surprisingly, built for overclocking.

The ASUS overclocking team officially set a new world record for overclocking, pushing the 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K past the 9 gigahertz barrier to 9.008 GHz. Additionally, the team set new records in PIFAST (6.85 seconds) and SUPERPI 1M (3.822 seconds). Combining the Core i9-13900K with the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX – and a healthy dose of liquid helium – the ASUS overclocking team became the latest to showcase the unprecedented overclocking performance in Intel’s unlocked processors.

NVIDIA's RTX 4080 Problem: They're Not Selling & MSRP Doesn't Exist - tech
(hx) 08:50 PM CET - Dec,20 2022 - Post a comment / read (3)
The NVIDIA RTX 4080 has a problem: No one is buying it -- or at least, not enough people that board partners are feeling relief from their investment. They're on the hook for millions upon millions of dollars in inventory, and it's because NVIDIA's pricing structure is so egregiously bad that sales have finally slowed. NVIDIA got comfortable with a market where literally anything would sell, no exaggeration, and just existing would guarantee a sale. But that market is over, and now NVIDIA has an RTX 4080 problem. The other issue is that MSRP cards don't exist -- partners launched some, then stopped stocking them.

Skype gets real-time video calls translation "TruVoice" with your personal voice - tech
(d@rkfu) 09:56 AM CET - Dec,15 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft continues breaking the language barrier by giving Skype users more tools for translating chats and calls. The latest Skype update introduces real-time translation for video calls with your personal voice (TruVoice), allowing your interlocutor to hear the translation as you would speak it. TruVoice is a big step for Skype in its mission to let people communicate with those whose language they do not know. Now you can ditch robotic voices and enjoy translation that sounds just like the person you are talking to. The AI that powers the feature uses several tools to do its magic. Microsoft says Skype Translator combines speech recognition with natural language processing, then samples your words to tune the translation and make it sound like you, achieving a more comfortable and human-like conversation. Microsoft also lets you disable the TruVoice feature and switch to standard robotic voices. You can see how the two options compare in the video below:

The new translation capabilities in Skype support English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and other languages. For now, TruVoice is available only in one-to-one calls, but Microsoft promises to upgrade group calls and Telephony in the next few months.

Intel is gonna be sweating, unless their upcoming Sapphire Rapids platform can magically compete. Intel's Raptor Lake CPUs might win against Ryzen in the mainstream, it's a whole different story in the datacenter.
