Microsoft will release four games for rival platforms, two of which are service-based and the other two “smaller games that were never really meant to be built as kind of platform exclusives,” Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a business updated-focused edition of the Official Xbox Podcast. While Spencer did not name the titles outright, both Hi-Fi RUSH and Sea of Thieves were previously rumored to be coming to rival platforms, which fit the bill of a smaller game and a service-based game. In addition, The Verge is reporting, citing sources, that the first two titles will be Hi-Fi RUSH and Pentiment, followed by Sea of Thieves and Grounded. The company has reportedly also been weighing the idea of bringing Gears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and even the next DOOM game to rival platforms, but final decisions have yet to be made.

Hideo Kojima on decision to develop Physint: "I realized that people die" - interview
(hx) 11:13 PM CET - Feb,09 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Kojima Productions founder and CEO Hideo Kojima discussed how the decision to develop the recently announced action espionage game Physint with Sony Interactive Entertainment came about during a special edition broadcast of “HideoTube” that aired today.
“I fell ill in 2020,” Kojima explained. “It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of it. I even had surgery. And I thought, ‘I can’t anymore.’ I was at my lowest and felt like I couldn’t go back to making games. I wrote a will, too. And in that moment, I realized that people die. But, I turned 60 last year. I’ll turn 70 in ten years. I hope to never retire. Having said that, if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action espionage game.”

He continued, “I get many requests from Hollywood to make films, but I’ve refused them. Because I have my own company now, I can’t leave for one or two years to go make a movie. The company would collapse. I was in a tough spot. And I talked to Guillermo del Toro about it. And he said, ‘Hideo, what you’re making is already a movie. Keep going as you are.’ His words saved me. And since we’ll be working with many creators in the business, though the output is a game, it won’t be too different from movies.”

Dying Light 2 Q&A - Techland Talks DLC, Factions, Drivable Vehicles, Weapon Repairs, More - interview
(hx) 10:22 AM CEST - May,02 2022 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps over at WCCFTech have conducted an interview with Dying Light 2 lead designer Tymon Smekta?a as he talks about the game;s upcoming story DLC, and the potential for new modes of play, factions, drivable vehicles, weapon repairs, and more. He hints at a lot of interesting stuff. Here's an excerpt:
Looking ahead, you’ve promised two story expansions, the first of which arrives in the coming months. Can you share any details on what to expect from that?

What I can say right now is that the first one runs parallel to the main story, so it can be started right after Aiden arrives in The City. Since it’s the first one out the gate, we didn’t want to force players to finish the game before they’d be able to have fun with it. I went through some of the speculations our community has expressed online, but I haven’t seen any of those theories get it right. So I hope that we’ll positively surprise people with this DLC.

Will the story DLC tie into the overall branching narrative? Will you be able to make choices that affect events outside of the DLC’s story?

Its story is centered around a specific place outside of the Villedor city limits. But of course, there will be some choices to make!

Some of the updates for the original Dying Light ventured into new genres and styles of play (the Hellraid DLC comes to mind). Is there anything similar planned for Dying Light 2 Stay Human? I recall you mentioned something about a survival mode during one of the Dying 2 Know shows.

We’ve promised 5 years of support so I expect a lot will happen in the universe of the game. I don’t want to go into specifics as of now, but the first year or two of post-launch content is us experimenting with different ideas, different models, and different types of content. We want to do it like this to see what our community wants and what they hit it off with.

What about co-op? Could we see more content specifically focused on co-op? Or maybe PvP?

Absolutely. Some of the content updates that we’ll introduce this year and next year will be centered mostly on various types of online experiences. We definitely feel that there’s a lot we could do with Dying Light multiplayer, from adding more co-op mechanics to lots of different, fun gameplay modes.

Hideki Kamiya on Scalebound cancellation - interview
(hx) 10:53 AM CET - Nov,20 2021 - Post a comment
PlainumGames was ‘too inexperienced’ to deliver on the challenges it faced developing Scalebound, which led to its cancellation, according to director Hideki Kamiya in a newly published interview with YouTube channel Cutscenes.

Here is the full transcript of Kamiya’s words on Scalebound:

Scalebound was a project we had teamed up on with Microsoft. They expected good things from us, and we needed to live up to those expectations with the project. Teaming up with Microsoft meant releasing the game on the latest Xbox console. I once again had the desire to make a high-end game. I wanted to go back to something photorealistic.

While it was a personal wish of mine, I thought it was also a necessary mission for PlatinumGames to improve our graphical ability and get to the next step of modern game creation. So we first decided to go with a universe like that.

I loved fantasy worlds since I was a child. I’ve always enjoyed worlds with swords, magic, and dragons. When I was a child, I don’t know if people overseas are familiar with these, but I would play Sorcerian, Hydlide, all these fantasy games from the classic PC era that I really enjoyed. I always wanted to make something around that theme. This is how I thought of a world revolving around a young man fighting together with a dragon.

However, it was a big challenge for PlatinumGames. We were working in an environment we weren’t used to. We were developing on the Unreal engine, we also lacked the necessary know-how to build a game based on online features. The hurdles we had to overcome were very big.

We weren’t experienced enough and couldn’t get over that wall, leading to what happened in the end. I’m sorry to the players who looked forward to it, and moreover I’m sorry to Microsoft who had placed their trust in us as a business partner. I want to apologize both as a creator and as a member of PlatinumGames.

Gabe Newell hints at more games for consoles - interview
(hx) 10:24 PM CEST - May,12 2021 - Post a comment
More Valve games may be coming to consoles, company co-founder and president Gabe Newell seems to have hinted. Newell was asked if ‘Steam games’ will be coming to consoles during a question-and-answers session while speaking at a public school in New Zealand. The exchange went as follows:
Will Steam be putting any games on consoles, or will it just say on PC?

Gabe Newell: "You will... uh... get a better idea of that by the end of this year."

While the question was phrased in reference to Steam—which is a platform—Newell was likely answering in regards to Valve’s own titles such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Portal, and Team Fortress. The last game Valve released for consoles was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which came to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 alongside PC in August 2012.

Ex-Blizzard devs making RTS game - interview
(hx) 06:02 PM CEST - Apr,03 2021 - Post a comment / read (1)
We don’t know much about the upcoming game from Frost Giant Studios, but the team’s sights are high. One of the co-founders, Tim Morten, former production lead on Blizzard’s StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, says the RTS game will build on what’s come before. "We very much want to build a game that feels like an evolution of Blizzard RTS games," Morten told Op Attack, "but our influences will include Warcraft III, Broodwar, and StarCraft II. We expect to be as different as those games are to each other." Frost Giant was founded by Morten and Tim Campbell, who was campaign lead designer on Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne.

Q: We see that a lot of veterans these days are going indie. Everyone has different reason to take this leap of faith. What is yours? What was the prime motivation behind Frost Giant?
Tim Morten: There are different pros and cons to working at big companies versus working at small companies. Blizzard is one of the best companies in the business, and it makes sense that their focus right now is on follow-ups to great successes like Overwatch and Diablo. Our passion is RTS games, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have found investors to back our effort to build a new one independently.

Q: How many people you plan to hire for your new project and how many have you hired already?
Tim Morten: Between full-time and contract staff, Frost Giant has already lined up 20 committed developers, and we expect to reach roughly twice our current size by the time we release.

Q: Are you guys happy with the funding you guys have raised so far? Do you think it is enough to fulfill the vision you have for your real-time strategy game?
Tim Morten: We’re extremely happy with the funding we’ve received, and also with the investors who have backed us, and who share our belief in the future of real-time strategy. The funding we’ve raised so far is a portion of what will be necessary to complete our first game; we expect to do more fund-raising in the future.

Q: Can you guys share the progress on your new project? Has it passed the early stages or is it still in the planning phase?
Tim Morten: We’re currently in pre-production, focused on concepting and building core systems. You can hear a bit about specific focuses in the “Pre-Production” video on our YouTube channel.

Q: I know this might be early, but are you guys planning to make a multiplayer only game or fans can also expect Starcraft like single-player in it?
Tim Morten: We plan to continue the tradition of enabling players to either play against AI, or against other players.

Q: Your team has a lot of veterans who worked on Blizzard games specially, StarCraft. Do you guys plan to deviate from StarCraft essence with novel ideas or the new game will take inspiration from Blizzard’s Strategy game?
Tim Morten: We very much want to build a game that feels like an evolution of Blizzard RTS games, but our influences will include Warcraft III, Broodwar, and StarCraft II. We expect to be as different as those games are to each other.

Q: Is your game planned for consoles, specially, PS5 and Xbox Series or it is only being planned for PC?
Tim Morten:We are focused on PC for launch. It’s not clear to us whether it’s possible for RTS to be as fun to play with a console controller.

Q: There haven’t been many Real-Time Strategy games on console in the last generation. Do you think the new generation of consoles are ready to receive more RTS games?
Tim Morten: From a graphics perspective, new consoles are definitely powerful enough for RTS, but the control interface remains a significant challenge.

Q: Do you guys plan on publishing the game as an Indie Developer or you will be looking for a publisher? Any plans on joining hand with a publisher, maybe Activision?
Tim Morten: Trends in publishing are evolving quickly, so we’re taking a wait-and-see approach. Will new distribution platforms gain prominence? Will existing exclusive channels open up? Will streaming become a bigger trend? Will large platforms from other parts of the world start to proliferate?

Q: What game engine you guys are going to use to develop your new game?
Tim Morten: We expect to make a decision on a game engine in the next month, but we’ve been evaluating multiple major engines for suitability.

Q: Now that you guys have a studio of your own, independent from any external pressure. What sort of working environment are you guys aiming to achieve? What will be your stance on the notorious “crunch culture”?
Tim Morten: Even when we worked together inside Blizzard, we made an effort to maintain a good work-life balance, and we’re committed to continuing that. For example, rather than having a maximum number of days off, we have a minimum to make sure no one on the team makes work their only focus.

Q: Are you guys planning more conventional ways of raising funds for the project like Kickstarter, Early Access etc?
Tim Morten: We haven’t considered paths for pre-release player funding yet, because we’re so early in our process. Separate from funding, we’re very committed to having discourse with the community throughout our development. This is currently happening through the FrostGiant subreddit, and through the monthly newsletter that anyone can sign up to receive at FrostGiant.com.

Players are ready for $70 games - interview
(d@rkfu) 12:35 AM CET - Mar,08 2021 - Post a comment / read (10)
The CEO of Take-Two Strauss Zelnick has reiterated his view that the decision to charge $69.99 for the next-gen versions of NBA 2K21 was the correct one, because the public was "ready" for a price increase. Here's an excerpt from transcript:
Speaking during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference this week (transcribed by VGC), Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was asked for his views on the reaction to NBA 2K21’s price point and what it means for game prices in the future.

“We announced a $70 price point for NBA 2K21, our view was that we’re offering an array of extraordinary experiences, lots of replayability, and the last time there was a frontline price increase in the US was 2005, 2006, so we think consumers were ready for it,” Zelnick replied.

He did stop short, however, of suggesting that future games will cost $70 going forwards, instead suggesting that the company needs to focus on providing a level of content that justifies that price point.

“We haven’t said anything about pricing other titles so far, and we tend to make announcements on a title-by-title basis, but I think our view is [that we want to] always deliver more value than what we charge, make sure the consumer has the experience and[…] the experience of paying for it, both are positive experiences,” he explained.

“We all know anecdotally that even if you love a consumer experience, if you feel you were overcharged for it, it ruins the experience, you don’t want to have it again. [If you] go to a great restaurant, a really really fine restaurant, have a great meal and great service, then you get a check that’s double what you think it should be, you’re never going back.”

He added: “So we always want to make sure that consumers feel like we deliver much more than we ask in return, and that’s true for our current consumer spending as well. We’re an entertainment company, we’re here to captivate and engage consumers, and if we do that then monetisation follows.”

NBA 2K21 was the first next-gen game to be officially priced at $70. When the price was announced last August, Zelnick defended the decision, saying: “We think with the value we offer consumers…and the kind of experience you can really only have on these next-generation consoles, that the price is justified.”

Yeah, because there's been no mass unemployment globally because of the pandemic. Perfect time to raise prices on things people don't need :-)
