AM4 platform = DDR4 only (up to DDR4-3200 official, higher with overclocking)
AM5 platform (Ryzen 7000 / 8000 / 9000 series) = DDR5 only — no DDR4 support
AMD even re-released the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition in 2026 specifically for people who still want high-end gaming on cheaper DDR4
I don't know what you'd want to compare it to. That DDR5 is crazy expensive - I just ordered 32GB of DDR5 for a client for 500 euros

I've been on DDR5 well over two years now (two years and 9 months, give or take). 2x2x16Gigs (64Gigs in total), bought it for ~380USD. These ones, to be specific: F5-7800J3646H16GX2-TZ5RK
This is a Gigabyte_Z790-AORUS-ELITE-AX, with 14700K CPU.
The mobo can't run it over 6200Mhz for some reason, it becomes unstable (some say it's a CPU limit, some say it's because it's two kits of twoes and not a single kit of four, some say those XMP speeds cannot be achieved with 4 modules ever), so the memory is downclocked.
However, I am running it with 32/35/35/36 timing (instead of the factory 36-46-46-125), and I tweaked other parms like tWR, tRFC2, tRFCrb and tREFI so the BIOS says it's much faster than than the XMP profile on the JEDEC
I have pulled it down to 6000Mhz at some point because I found two games that were very memory-intensive and would cause a BSOD every now and them. No issues since then.
Anyway, we are not benchmarking memory here, we are benchmarking CPUs, aren't we?
I undervolted the CPU and tweaked it further a bit to make it more stable.
Cinebench R23 multicore score is 36551.
WinRAR multicore test: 59609
WinRAR singlecore test: 3754
And yes, those are scores on Windows 10, not on Windows 11.
Pretty good and stable, low heat and good speed when I need it.
I wonder what the re-release of the CPU might look like after Intel learned from their mistakes (which includes their stupid cooling solution -> no liquid metal).

In case you don't know, this characteristics matters the most and only AIDA can measure it for you consistently and accurately:
Memory Latency (ns) 58.9
Find a way to keep that low. The rest won't really matter in the end as this is the true measure of how fast you can access data in the RAM; this is the most important bottleneck for any applications you run (be it apps or games, even the OS itself).
I could not get it below 54nsecs - well, I could but the system was unstable -, at 58.9 ns it is rock solid.
All these youtubers - clueless fucks making a living on videos about nothing.
FYI, I could reach 45 nsecs on DDR3 by tweaking the RAM right - that's how I can still play most games on my 4970K!
Why? Because latency matters more than transfer speed - this is the amount of time the CPU has to wait to access any data in the RAM, every time it's needed.
DDR4 vs. DDR5 shan't make any difference in real-life scenarios if you can get both near 50nsecs. At 100ns and above (where most RAMs sit without proper tweaking), there is a notable difference in how snappy Windows is (i.e., from clicking a mouse to a menu opening).
DDR4 and DDR5 will only show a difference when you read/write massive amounts of data from one place to another frequently (which a normal PC user would never do). This is why DDR5 is better for 4k+ gaming though - DDR5 can transfer (not access!) large textures faster. |
