Let's face it. As older hardware get's more and more harder and expensive to find this is the way of the future.

| 4k is not enough to render VGA resolution properly. Funny, huh? |

The guy on the video hasn't experimented much with shaders.
The best result for CRT reproduction can be achieved using RetroArch. A preset like CRT Royale paired with an appropriate composite shader for example. It depends on the kind of VGA or TV-look/signal you're going for. There is an astronomically large number of presets available, catering for all systems alike
https://forums.libretro.com/ is a good place to hang out if you're unsure how to set these things up. There are many image comparison threads of shader experimentation vs. the real thing.
I'm not sure how DOSBox Pure (this is the preferred emulation core that RetroArch uses) compares with DOSBox-X or DOSBox-Staging though. I try to only use RetroArch exclusively for the emulation of anything pre-1994, because nothing else comes close to its authenticity re: image quality.

Cheers. I did not know about Pure and RetroArch. It does not seem to be updated as frequently as Staging.
Do you have a recommended config for image quality?
RetroArch seems to mess with the keys - P, ESC, etc and it does not let me configure DOS before running the game.
Seems it's built for people that don't know how to use DOS, how to configure it or don't want to deal with that. |

You can configure the core if you load RetroArch, and then Load Core "DOSBox Pure". RetroArch sets the active core and allows you to configure options on a per-core basis.
You can also turn off RetroArch's hotkeys, so the keyboard only interacts with the emulator core itself. I prefer to configure a menu toggle, e.g. hold down SHIFT + ESC to go back to RetroArch's main menu. I also have it mapped to my joypad's Start button (need to hold it down for 2 secs).
My favourite shaders to play with at the moment are these because they simulate a real TV/Monitor Bezel along with accurate light reflections (Looks amazing on a big 4K TV screen):
https://github.com/Duimon/Duimon-Mega-Bezel
https://github.com/HyperspaceMadness/Mega_Bezel
Duimon is great because it has a preset for all popular systems.
A quick basic tutorial:
To install, copy the files into | Code: | | /shaders/Duimon-Mega-Bezel/ |
You can also configure what shader to use on a per-core basis.
e.g. if you're using slangp shader files for the Snes9x core
| Code: | | /config/Snes9x/Snes9x.slangp |
edit that file and you can choose the relevant Duimon shader like this:
| Code: | | #reference ":/shaders/Duimon-Mega-Bezel/Presets/Advanced/Nintendo_Super_Famicom/Super_Famicom-[ADV]-[Guest]-[Bezel]-[Night].slangp" |
When you load a game with the Snes9x core it will automatically use that shader.
My advice, play around with it. Don't be afraid to break it lol. RetroArch has amazing customization options. |
