| I remember Dune 2 was the very first real time strategy game, do someone remember an earlier RTS game? |

I'm quite tempted to try this 2020 remake now. It doesn't look bad at all!

Pffft. Another franchise down the drain... Dune 2 was better. Coming to think of it, even Dune 2000 is better that this crap looks right now.

I think Dune 2 was the first real RTS for the PC the predecessor of the Command and Conquer series. Everything before was turn-based - or lacked direct unit control - there was just not enough computing capacity for real time gaming back then.

Same here, except the first Dune was not a real real-time strategy game. |

I just remembered Populous - it was my first strategy game, ever.
Not real-time, just the first strategy. I think I played it on a 286 or a 386DX40 (can't recall which PC it was) |

Populous was simple and brilliant all in one.
Here you go https://www.gog.com/en/game/populous
Then i got magic carpet (remember the stereoscopic glasses that came with it) https://www.gog.com/game/magic_carpet and i couldn’t put it down - something about collecting those golden balls and hot air balloon’s, then materialising buildings out the ground, just friggin hooked me!
Then the king that rules me to this day Dungeon Keeper 1/2 (boy was in fun in 3DFX especially the flies-eye view!) My all time fantasy game that has *never ever* been equalled. I’ve bought most ‘dungeon#’ games on the net and none have a remote inkling of DK. Especially the Mistress and Horny. https://www.gog.com/game/dungeon_keeper_2
Even the freak out Alone in the Dark, trilogy https://www.gog.com/game/alone_in_the_dark |

Oh, magic carpet... what a great game it was.
I am surprised there was no remake yet. Who owns the IP for Magic Carpet these days? Ah, it's EA. Then, I guess it's better that there is no remake.
Here's an alternative that "never made it":
https://store.steampowered.com/app/269610/Arcane_Worlds/
I think War For The Overworld came close - but only close because the minions are not that good (I miss Horny, especially). They are similar of course, but not quite the same.
The hot mistress? Unbeatable!
Also, WFTO is far less funny. There are only moments.
Alone in the Dark - man, I almost shite meself playing that game. |

Wow, Arcane - more like Archaic!

Actually, its your typical Early Access game.
Awesome concept. Some nice screenshots. 2 Updates a year. Never leaves beta. Always feels incomplete.
Just that this piece of code here got literally nothing to do after about 20 minutes of gametime. And its in my inventory for 1,5 years now. Nothing changed.
You fly around, beat the same 3 bosses, discover about 3 types of planets and find a few magic spells. thats it. NOTHING else to do. And no gameplay additions since... forever. |
It’s a one man show. His comment about “life getting in the way of progress” sums it up. He should have got someone else in to cover or help him with the game. You can’t have early access if you can’t be arsed.
Wasn’t there a hint of DK3 many, many years ago? It would sell by the bucket load. A sorely underestimated game. I suppose the longer generations go without any link to classic titles of old, the least chance there is for developers to make them with the technology we have today. The result is we’re doomed to play GoG to keep the old stuff alive. People today just want big buck titles that make them rich in the shortest time - or remake/master games that titillate.
I still play GZDoom as it uses mouse and amazing graphics, weapons, gore and fast! https://zdoom.org/downloads |

Yes, there was a hint but then the company was sold shortly thereafter - that is, if my memory serves me well.
I do GZDoom less and less. Somehow shooters no longer attract me.
I coded a MechWarrior mod for Quake back then and now ... I find them boring... |

Remember it’s Doom we’re talking about. It’s not fast paced like some others. Plus it’s got the best config options to make the game as you want it.
Quake 3 Arena is another great single player experience. Text the bot’s and they answer back |
